Although blasthole deviation is a problem which can seriously affect blasting operations, there is little practical emphasis on controlling this deviation and no practical emphasis on understanding its practical behaviour. The most common way of dealing with it involves tight control over drill set up and surveying hole paths. The surveying might involve simple collar location and inclination measurement to estimate the hole's actual path. At best, some operations routinely survey hole paths after all holes in a stope have been drilled. In addition, although there is an expectation that holes will deviate, there is no planning for this behaviour in order to reduce its impact on the blast. Design decisions are invariably made with the assumption that holes are straight. If and when surveys reveal problems it is possible only to adjust charging and initiation to 'work around them'. In extreme cases the drill might be recalled to fill in gaps. The lack of planning and the lack of understanding are doubtlessly linked.A model is presented that will predict the expected path of a drill hole. By knowing how a selected few holes deviated it is possible to make a good estimate of the deviation of other holes in the same rock mass. After minimal calibration the model can be used to increase the amount of information for a given amount of surveying or the amount of surveying can be reduced while maintaining the same level of knowledge of blasthole deviation. Equally important is the ability to plan for the deviation in future drilling through altering the initial collar angles or drilling from different locations. It is the authors' hope that planning for hole deviation becomes as much a part of the design process as planning for detonator delay scatter and explosive performance variation.

Whether you are an employee, contractor or consultant working in the mineral industry, there are pressures to deliver the best possible performance. Technical professionals are usually driven by an internal desire to perform to a high standard because of personal pride in their profession, but there are an increasing number of external requirements to demonstrate that the actions taken were based upon reasonable grounds and that the work conformed to current best practice. People expect these best practice procedures to be followed and governments are now requiring those tendering for contracts to be registered in some way and to be participants in quality assurance schemes. One is not immune to these pressures just because you are working in a less legislatively sophisticated developing country in the circum-Pacific rim (Pacrim) region.

The crushing and concentration of ores, as Herbert Hoover commented in a footnote in De Re Metallica, stretches back at least 6000 years. During those years there have been continuing changes and improvements in mineral processing technology. It has expanded greatly in its ability to handle different types of minerals, and lower grade and more complex ores. Australia will be dependent on the mineral industry for the fore- seeable future and there will be continuing demands on the mill opera- tors to improve the technology with regard to efficiency, flexibility and costs. These demands will be met successfully in the future as they have been in the past. This Mill Operators' Conference is an important forum for assessing our present position and planning for the future.

The hydraulic-stowing mining method is most effective for mining thick coal seams. It is superior to the sliced cover- caving and artificial mining method and the fully mechanized sublevel-caving mining method for the following reasons - a much higher recovery rate is achieved, there is much less surface subsidence and roof pressure, there is no hidden danger of gob fire, and much less methane emission and coal dust problems, etc.. However, its superiority is overshadowed by its backward stowing technique which makes mechanisation of mining and stowing difficult, causes bleed water interference to production and to the environment and is uneconomic because of the high cost of stowing material. These disadvantages limited its application to coal seams that are difficult and not suitable to be mined by other mining methods. The remedy is in reforming it thoroughly to permit mining of otherwise unminable seams and this paper presents the reformation.

The implementation of the Mining Further Amendment) Act, 1970, and later the Coal Mining Act, 1973, placed a requirement on the Department of Mines to accept an initiative in relation to coal exploration and coal mine development which does not apply in the case of other minerals. It is necessary to consider the exploration of the total coal resources of the State when considering exploration rather than one individual basin or deposit. If the level of knowledge of the coal resources in these basins is considered in relation to their potential for development it is possible to allocate broad scale priorities to their assessment. Due to the enormity of the task which involves a conservative estimate of in excess of 400 000 m of drilling to reach a broad reconnaissance level of understanding the involvement of industry with the Department in the exploration programme is necessary. A series of tests on rock stress measurement devices used with the overcoring method indicated that improvements could be made in their construction. A prototype inclusion cell was developed with strain gauge rosettes bonded to a 0.05 mm thickness stainless steel sheet which was formed into a cylinder around two end pieces. The finished diameter was slightly larger than previous cells so that the thinner plate and the reduced annulus of Araldite cement in the installation borehole gave a better response in the laboratory than the other cells tested, especially in simulated bedded rock. It was less affected by inhomogeneity and temperature changes. Its high sensitivity should make it suitable for both absolute stress measurement and field monitoring. A table of comparative readings is given for the new cell and for four other devices used in simulated in-situ rock conditions.

In 2004, the Western Australian Department of Industry and ResourcesÆ Burrup Rock Art Management Committee commissioned a number of independent scientific studies to evaluate the condition of rock art in the Burrup Peninsula near Karratha (Western Australia). These studies are evaluating the physico-chemical aspects of the effect of environmental modification on the visible appearance of the rock art. Because of the cultural significance of the sites, the research approach has been to employ non-destructive testing strategies and work in the field has progressed with respect for the importance of the area. This paper only reports the spectral mineralogy monitoring at each of the sites to evaluate whether changes in mineralogy are observed on rock surfaces. Reflectance spectroscopy is a non-destructive, in situ materials characterisation technique that provides information about the mineralogy. The minerals detected include haematite, kaolinite, chlorite, goethite, gibbsite and manganese oxides. Current results indicate that the surface mineralogy of the rock art has not changed in the last four years.

The authors have used the geotechnical study for design of the South Wall of Mt. Newman Mining's Mt. Whaleback Mine to illustrate how geotechnical studies can be economically justified. This is achieved by relating the savings resulting from increased ore recovery and prevention of failure to the cost of the study. An outline of the geotechnical study is provided in the paper, including a brief description of the innovative methods used to investigate geological structure of the mine and descriptions of the methods of slope reinforcement adopted.

Rock bolting has become the most important method of ground support at Mount Isa. Various types of rock bolts are used to suit the different applications and requirements. To apply rock bolting techniques satisfactorily, it is necessary to have some knowledge of the nature of the rock, the type of rock failure, any stress redistribution which may occur during the intended life of the rock bolt and the time for which ground support is required. At Mount Isa there are a number of dif- ferent applications of rock bolts for ground support, and some trends in rock bolting techniques.

Future mineral processing developments will be of two types. There will be a continuation of the advances of the last 20 years including major increases in equipment capacities, the development of reliable on-line instrumenta- tion, the use of digital computers for automatic control, and the greatly expanded use of in-situ leaching techniques. However, there will also be a need for innovations as the industry faces a different set of problems to those involved in cost and extraction efficiency considerations. These new problems include those relating to energy usage, environmental pressures, and the further development of large low grade deposits and small, high grade metallurgic- ally complex deposits. Present technology does not appear adequate to solve many of these new demands. New treat- ment concepts will be required, and the immediate outlook in this regard is not encouraging. A major research and development task in mineral processing over the next 20 years will be to seek out new ideas and develop them, and this must be pursued with imagination and determination. Both the continuation of the present research pro- grammes and the development of new methods will require a steady supply of highly qualified technical personnel. These people are not being produced in the numbers required, and this situation must be urgently rectified.

In recently completed road tunnel projects in Queensland, such as the Airport Link and the Clem7 tunnels, there is a smoke duct running along the roof of the carriageways to extract smoke in case of fire. In New South Wales, no road tunnels have a smoke duct. In the Melbourne City Link tunnels, there is a small smoke duct running along the roof. All of the tunnels are safe as claimed by the designers and authorities. However, there is significant cost associated with providing a full size smoke duct compared with no smoke duct. This paper is going to present a comparison of the road tunnel safety with a smoke duct and those without one from a risk perspective. It further discusses the cost-effectiveness of such provisions and whether similar levels of safety could be achieved without a smoke duct.CITATION:Lau, R, 2014. Drilling has disclosed a sequence of Cainozoic sediments immediately to the west of the Ediacara mineral field containing little or no dolomitic debris in the lower and middle sections, but with gravel beds of dolomite derived from local rocks in the upper part. It is suggested that the lower and middle sequence of Cainozoic strata was deposited over the area of the Ediacara Range, and that this range was uplifted, probably as a horst block, during Quaternary times and was first exposed to subaerial erosion during the upper Pleistocene epoch.Lower Cambrian dolomites with associated stratiform lead mineralization, which formed the target of drilling on the western downthrown block of the Ediacara Fault, were eroded before deposition of Cainozoic sediments.Intense leaching of basal Cambrian dolomites around the periphery of the Ediacara Basin took place during Mesozoic and Tertiary times. This leaching process has resulted in enrichment of copper and lead mineralization in a thick marginal zone of residual clayey material overlain by dolomitic collapse breccia. These zones of leaching and enrichment were preserved under Cainozoic sediments which have subsequently been eroded. The Ediacara Fault appears to have been a major conduit for mineralizing fluids and is the main lineament of the Torrens Hinge Zone. Contemporaneous movements on this fault have controlled rates of depositionand thickness of sediments across the fault during Adelaidean and Cainozoic times. Though latest movements of this fault have been west block down, the predominant movement has been east block down with associated thickening of sediments to the east in the Adelaide Geosync1ine.

The accuracy of an ore reserve is only as good as the geologist's understanding of the deposit. The methods that are applied to resource and reserve estimation reflect that understanding. At the Olympic Dam copper-uranium-gold deposit in South Australia, evolution in the understanding of the controls on mineralisation coupled with the changing demands of the project have led to changes in the approach to reserve estimation. The project has moved into a phase where detailed stope mining reserves are now required as distinct from global ore reserves. The complex nature of the mineralisation and the large amount of data demand that all available information be readily accessible in a flexible format. To enable the selective manipulation of geological and assay information and its characterisation, a relational database has been developed. For reserve calculations themselves, initial computations were based on a system derived from that used for the Kambalda nickel orebodies. The Olympic Dam system differed mainly in the use of statistical analyses in the estimation of grade instead of the previous polygonal area of influence weighting method, Three dimensional weighting techniques are now being used for local reserve estimates. Flexible facilities for raw data handling combined with grade estimation techniques which are commensurate with the mine geologist's understanding, produce detailed gridded and contoured ore zone models suitable for reserve calculations and stope designs.

The initially cautious approach taken towards ground support and reinforcement at the Porgera Underground Gold Mine in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea has evolved rapidly in the two years since stoping commenced. The confidence to continue the evolution process has grown from an increasing knowledge of mining conditions as stoping has progressed, to the extent that reinforcement requirements have decreased by 50 to 75 per cent depending on local circumstances. Changes to mining practices have significantly assisted and influenced this process.Empirical observations of ground behaviour, assisted by a deliberately selective extensometer monitoring program, provided the stimulus for early changes to ground support and reinforcement practices. Further optimisation of the ground support and reinforcement effort is being pursued through an active monitoring, measuring and analysis program. Ultimately, situation rather than site specific design will ensure continuing high quality ground support and reinforcement installations. However, local structural and lithological factors will continue to become more critical as the optimum position is reached.

Anglo Platinum is the worldÆs largest producer of platinum group metals, and also produces large quantities of nickel, copper and cobalt at its Refining complex in Rustenburg, South Africa. In 1995 Anglo Platinum embarked on a smelter modernisation project, primarily to reduce site emissions to below the guideline limit of 20 tonnes per day SO2, but also to increase the converting capacity in line with future projected production profiles. To achieve these requirements the existing Pierce Smith converters were replaced with a single large Ausmelt converter and a new acid plant. This was the first time that an Ausmelt furnace had been used for converting, but it had the advantages of being a very robust furnace and was fully enclosed, giving good gas capture. It was thus considered the most appropriate technology from both a process and an environmental perspective. It also enabled the smelting and converting furnaces to be decoupled. The plant was commissioned from late 2001 and the first tap was in June 2002. Despite being a new technology, ramp-up has been similar to other large scale pyrometallurgical operations. Numerous process improvements have been made since start-up, most notably a change from two-stage batch to fully continuous, resulting in the plant now operating above design in terms of throughput. Optimisation of freeboard accretion control was also a major component of the ramp-up activity. This paper discusses the commissioning and ramp-up issues of the new Ausmelt converting furnace, concentrating on the design and process changes, and summarises current operating performance against the original design objectives.

New Zealand is an exposed part of a sub- continent that was detached from Australia when the Tasman Sea opened in the Late Cretaceous. The pre-separation rocks occur in three main belts. A western belt or terrane was part of Antarctica, was continuous with southern Australian rocks, and was moved eastwards in the Mid Devonian. A central belt of Hokonui and Caples rocks can be correlated broadly with the Gympie Terrane of eastern Queensland. It was an island arc, fore-arc basin and accretionary wedge system, and it was accreted to eastern Australasia in the Mid Triassic. The third belt consists of Torlesse rocks and was possibly emplaced over the Caples rocks by at least three pulses of strike-slip, in the Triassic, the Jurassic and the Cretaceous. The three episodes of strike-slip can be correlated with regional events in eastern Australia. Pre-Cainozoic New Zealand was an amalgam of terranes that had moved eastwards from south of Australia and southwards from east of Australia.

The investment worth of a mineral deposit can only be realistically evaluated in relation to specific engineering design criteria, which fully details the proposed method of exploitation. These criteria have not in general been taken into serious consideration when leaseholders have reported reserves in the past. In fact, many "reserve" figures quoted are probably more correctly classified as geological resources. The industry now recognises that it is necessary to take into consideration not only grade and mill recovery factors, but also likely mining and processing costs as well as the current market price for the commodity. Once having estimated those costs which are applicable to the resource under study, they can be deducted from the gross inherent worth of the orebody to result in an estimate of the potential net revenue. Through a process of interactive trial mine designs and evaluation, reserves can be quantified to provide an estimate of the available recoverable economic reserves given a set of assumed cost and operational parameters. It follows then, that the available economic reserve recoverable from a given resource will vary from time-to-time as cost and price factors vary in response to changing technology and economic factors. A methodology is described which may be used to derive economic recoverable reserves based on a computerised model of the geological resource data and appropriate economic and operational cost algorithms. Examples are provided from both coal and gold studies to illustrate the impact of economic criteria on the magnitude of the reserve figure reported for each project.
