The Selective Precipitation (Basics) Process is a means of controlling impurities such as the ions of Mn, Mg, and Cl as well as sulphate and water, in an electrolytic zinc plant circuit. This is achieved by precipita- ting zinc selectively as a basic zinc sulphate from a portion of impure circuit solution. The impurities remain in the solution, which can be discarded, while the zinc, substantially free of impurities, is returned to the main circuit by using the precipitate as a neutral- ising reagent. A description of the process and its development to a full scale operating plant at the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited is Presented.

The EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP) and the EPA Region VIII Superfund office are jointly conducting a field-scale technology demonstration of a two-step in situ treatment of the acidic Anchor Hill Pit lake at the Gilt Edge Mine Superfund site near Deadwood, South Dakota, USA. The project goal is to develop cost and performance data for the in situ treatment for potential application in long-term water treatment/management activities at the Gilt Edge site, and for potential application at other similar sites. Lime neutralisation of the pit using a Neutra-Mill was accomplished in the spring of 2001, with a resultant lime utilisation efficiency of about 71 per cent, and a typical throughput of about 1 tonne per hour using coarse, pebble quicklime and 1.4 tonnes per hour using finer, ground lime. Redox-mediated biotransformation treatment of the pit has been ongoing since May 2001. As of January 2003, denitrification is complete in the near-surface waters and about 90 per cent complete in the deeper waters. Bacterial sulfate reduction is expected to begin in the near future. This paper describes project activities, results, and lessons-learned to-date as well as future monitoring plans.

A research program was conducted to determine the relationship between operating conditions and medium losses in Mt Newman Mining's Beneficiation Plant. It was found that major medium losses were adherence losses and losses fran the overflow from the water recovery cyclones. Operating density and medium blend were found to have a significant effect on the medium consumption. Viscosity was thought to be the underlying factor. This viscosity problem was overcame by adding dilution water to the cyclone spigot discharge to reduce viscosity. The result was a reduction in medium consumption of 25 percent under normal operating conditions. Keywords:- Heavy Medium, Viscosity, Medium Carposition

The various risk components to be addressed by explorers and project developers (and their investors) to minimise and/or manage the risk of Pacrim mineral investment are summarised to provide an overview of the issues involved and to set the scene. It then highlights the role of individual Mineral Industry Professionals (especially independent consultants) who are at the heart of any risk reduction or risk management strategy. The involvement of accredited qualified/experienced (competent) and reputable professionals is essential to produce realistic and reliable results that gain and maintain investor confidence. Today, high ethical standards as well as technical competence are sought by government legislation/licensing regimes and initiatives of professional bodies like AusIMM, MICA, Professions Australia, Council of Professions, etc. All attempt to regulate and guarantee reputable individual professional behaviour (particularly in the context of currently perceived high corruption levels in many Pacrim countries). Brief comment will discuss the usefulness of accreditation and ethics codes plus other specific codes (eg JORC/VALMIN and their international analogues in Canada, South Africa, etc) in reducing risks.

Opencast Lignite Mining requires topwall strata of seams to be fully depleted and footwall aquifers sufficiently depressurized. To prevent a spread of the cone of depression into protected wetlands some distance away, alternatives had been investigated such as closing water works, underground slurry wall barriers and recharge by infiltration. As a result of these investigations, the infiltration method has been chosen and in a first phase during the next decade it will utilize as much as 55 x 106 m3/year. Using this approach, the survival of the wet lands is assured.

The Mt. Morgan mine, located 36 km SSW of Rockhampton, Qld at Lat. 23¦38' S, Long. 1500 22'E, is hosted by a Middle Devonian sequence of acid volcanic rocks and sediments. The Upper Nine Mile Creek (UNMC) prospect, 14 km SE of the Mt. Morgan mine, is in an ap- parently equivalent sequence of rocks. The Late Devonian Mt. Morgan Tonalite separates the two areas. The Mt. Chalmers mine, located 27 km NE of Rockhampton at Lat. 23¦ 18' S, Long. 150039'E, is hosted by the Early Permian Berserker Beds. These three volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits show pronounced similarities in their host rock lithologies and stratigraphic-struc- tural settings.

Through the use of structural analysis programs such as Unwedge and considering the shear strength of applied fibrecrete it can be shown that fibrecrete can provide a higher factor of safety in a ætypicalÆ underground development excavation than standard rock bolts. This paper describes the progression of ground support from an æas requiredÆ component of mining to the use of bolts and surface support as a mandatory requirement. With the mandatory requirement for surface support, fibrecrete has been considered and applied as a secondary feature but simple analysis and practical observations indicate that it may be considered as primary support. The key elements to its implementation are: When is it safe to work under fresh fibrecrete and how do we practically determine this? How much ground support does fibrecrete provide? How can we reduce the cost of fibrecrete? An examination of these questions indicates fibrecrete can be much safer,less expensive and quicker to install than normal ground support elements. This paper explores practical examples from sites where significant benefits have been achieved by mine operators.

Mesothermal lode-gold deposits often pose problems during sampling because of their complex and erratic gold grade distribution, and the presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation protocols must form the basis of any resource estimate at whatever stage a project is at. Design of a sampling regime must be based upon a thorough understanding of orebody mineralogy and geology. This should include consideration of gold particle size and distribution. The sample type, size and density employed must also be based on the underlying geology of the deposit. Choice of sample preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if fundamental sampling error and analytical errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, consistently understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and bulk leach extractable gold assay. The proportion of coarse gold within samples will have a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assay method. The application of Gy sampling theory can help to reduce errors within the processing of samples of broken rock. Quality control/assurance of sampling regimes must also be critically assessed. The problems associated with sampling mesothermal lode-gold type deposits are presented as case studies from Western Australia and North America.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, fatalities from road transport accidents represented an average of over 97 per cent of all transport related accidents between 1997 and 2002. With increasing traffic density, tunnels are becoming a more viable means of providing alternative travel routes to ease areas of congestion in the road transport network. However, unlike open road conditions, a fire incident in the confined space of a tunnel environment may impact upon many users that are remote from the incident location. In this context, designing for an appropriate level of safety in tunnels is therefore an important consideration for achieving consistency in the life safety measures for users of the road transport network. Unfortunately, like fire safety engineering design for buildings, there are presently no clear measures in the design processes to assess the adequacy of the design in terms of attaining the level of safety implicated in the design objectives. This is partly due to the indeterminate nature in which the design objective or the level of performance measure is stated û the intent of the objective is relatively clear but the measure of it is not. Another reason is the lack of a standardised procedure for determining the critical design variables affecting life safety. This is important to ascertain consistency in the use or adoption of the important parameters for design. This paper looks at the processes involved in the fire engineering design of road tunnels that are currently practised. A review of the design processes for fire safety in road tunnels is provided, which includes the range of fire scenarios in a tunnel environment, the traffic flow and composition, the relevant fire protection systems, the ventilation and smoke control system, the egress provisions and the benefits of incorporating fire brigade intervention. A simplified risk assessment approach is developed for a typical road tunnel to assess and evaluate the impact of a range of design parameters on life safety. Using a sensitivity technique, the important variables are then identified and means of reducing design variations associated with them are recommended. The technique may be further refined for use in the development of codes or guidelines in order to develop a suitable means of deriving more consistent design values, and hence achieve better consistency in the overall level of safety in the design.

In general the iron ore industry has been slow to adopt the Whittle Pit optimising software in the evaluation of iron ore deposits. The reasons for this are two-fold:the iron ore industry has developed techniques, usually bespoke software residing in the corporate offices of the respective iron ore companies, to establish their final pit limits; and the fact that the Whittle software doesnÆt easily lend itself to estimating a sales product of constant quality without maximising grade (metal content). The Whittle software is based on the work done by Lerch and Grossman (in the early 1970s), which proposed that graph theory be used to establish an optimal surface that maximises the revenue from a deposit. The maximised surface created in the pit optimiser is translated into a proposed optimal final pit shape that can be used by the mine design engineers as a target outline to lay out the final practical pit. By treating a geological and ore resources model that was created for an iron ore deposit as a subset of the recoverable resources estimation (RRE) type of geological models, the evaluation of an iron ore deposit and establishing the final pit is greatly simplified in the Whittle 4-X optimiser. Instead of trying to optimise the iron content of the deposit, the emphasis swings to maximising the extraction of a finished and saleable iron ore product. This is achieved by treating the finished saleable iron ore as an element in the multi-element Whittle optimiser. The quality of the finished sales product is represented, and the material that cannot be used in the blended product is also shown. Proposals for enhancing the functionality in the Whittle 4-X optimiser to make the evaluation of iron (and coal) deposits easier includes the creation of a new reporting function that will allow the user to specify which field(s) can be used as the divisor(s) for the reporting of the element grades in the model.

The introduction of gravimetric sampling of respirable dust in the mining industry ne- cessitated the standardisation of techniques. The paper reviews the legislation con- trolling respirable dust monitoring for risk assessment purposes, it discusses the actions taken to introduce gravimetric sampling in collieries and it summarises the proposed guidelines. In conclusion, some of the results of dust surveys conducted in accordance with the proposed strategy are discussed.

The magmatic arcs of SE Asia and SW Pacific contain some of the worldÆs major magmatic-hydrothermal gold deposits. Most gold deposits in SE Asian and SW Pacific arcs formed during periods of plate reorganisation rather than during periods of normal or steady state subduction. These plate reorganisations were caused initially by the collisions of the Australian Craton with the Philippines-Halmahera Arc and the Ontong Java Plateau with the Melanesian Arc at ~25 Ma. A second Mid-Miocene period of mineralisation accompanied plate reorganisation following maximum rotation or extrusion of Indochina and cessation of spreading in the South China Sea at ~17 Ma. However, the vast majority of deposits from New Zealand to Taiwan formed since 7 Ma during an important period of tectonic reorganisation that accompanied and followed changes in the relative motion between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates between ~8 and 3.5 Ma. Magmatism in unusual tectonic settings produced the most abundant and largest deposits with many deposits associated with high-K calc-alkaline, shoshonite, adakite and alkaline magmatism. In particular peak mineralisation appears related to melting of sub-arc lithosphere that has been previously modified by subduction. During large-scale plate reorganisation this can occur towards or at the end of a period of normal subduction, following arc collision or accompanying subduction reversal at approximately the same time in different parts of a complex system of arcs such as in SE Asia and the SW Pacific.

At depths greater than several kilometres in the crust, elevated temperature, confining pressure, and the presence of reactive pore fluids typically drives rapid destruction of permeability in fractured and porous rock. Ongoing deformation is required to regenerate permeability and facilitate the high fluid flux necessary to produce hydrothermal ore systems. A dominant influence on the evolution of fluid pathways in hydrothermal systems is provided by stress states, fluid pressures and reactions that drive permeability enhancement and compete with permeability destruction processes (Cox, Braun and Knackstedt, 2001). The precious metallogenic belt and its geoloqical-tectonic location in eastern China.The precious metallogenic belt of eastern China is located in the western part of the Pacific gold metallogenic belt, and occurs in the upper levels of the continent cut by a deep fault structure tending NNE and NE, and active during the Mesozoic. The precious metallogenic period ranges mainly from Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (160 Ma-110 Ma); subordinate mineralisation occurred during the Hercynian period, and was rare in the proterozoic.Seven precious metallogenic belts are recognised from east to west, i.e. from continent to the margin active belts, as follows:1. Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS), Hallimond tube flotation tests and microelectrophoresis measurements have been used to investigate the reactions involved in the adsorption-ion of K-amyl xanthate on finely ground pyrite. Pure pyrite was finely wet ground, at different pH values, in specially built laboratory stainless steel or iron rod mills. Amyl dixanthogen was the only product identified on the surface of pyrite when stainless steel rods were used. When iron rods were utilised, ferric xanthate and physically adsorbed xanthate ions were observed in the superficial phase. The use of iron media was found to depress slightly the floatability of the mineral.

THE South Mine. owned by the Broken Hill South Limited, occupies mineral leases 7 and 8 on the Broken Hill lode. The ore reserves are 4,250,000 tons, and the ore hauled for the year ended June, 1930, was 387,000 tons, the total to date being 7,840,000.The mine, down to the 1070-ft. level, is naturally divided into two sections, the northern and southern ends. Ore extraction is practically completed in the northern end to this horizon, while the southern end is developed ready for a concentrated attack.Fig. 1 shows the state of the 8215-ft. level, after connection to the new shaft.The levels above and below to the 1070-ft. level are in a similar condition, while below the 1070-ft. level the stoping has been confined to the north end, but not completed. The south end on these levels is also partially developed.The ore at present is hauled up No. 1 shaft, which is centrally situated to the present workings. This shaft was put into use in 1909, and in 20 years has had approximately 5,000,000 tons of ore pulled through it.The company, having proved the existence of large ore-bodies in the southern end of the mine, decided to sink No. 7 shaft. This is a six-compartment frame-set shaft (see Fig. 2) equipped with two cages and two 5-ton skips, the remaining compartments being utilised for electric cables, pipes, and ladders. The surface arrangements will include a steel head frame, electric winders, and breaker station.

The Coastal Cordillera of northern Chile hosts the youngest and possibly best preserved iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) belt yet discovered and includes important deposits such as Candelaria and Mantoverde. The spatial and temporal relationships of hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation (Fe and Cu-Au) related to structural and lithologic features were investigated through geologic mapping and petrographic and geochronological studies along two W-E-transects crossing the Coastal Cordillera to the north of Vallenar. The project aimed to determine vectors for district-scale and regional exploration. Along with magnetite-apatite deposits (Central Iron Belt) and manto-type copper deposits, the IOCG deposits are hosted in a N-trending volcano-sedimentary sequence formed in a Jurassic to Early Cretaceous arc/back-arc setting (Sillitoe, 2003; Ramos and Alemßn, 2000). Calc-alkaline plutonic rocks intrude and metamorphose the volcano-sedimentary sequence, and become progressively younger from west to east reflecting a shift of arc magmatism (to Paleocene in the far east). From west to east along the Agua Grande-Chehueque profile, four domains of different economic potential are recognised. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The mmmg of alluvial gold involves many deposits of theMesozoic, Tertiary, and Quaternary Ages in processing. Majorfeatures of the composition of such alluvial deposits are the lowcontent of gold and the small size of the gold particles. Atpresent, the gold-miners treat alluvial deposits in which a portionof fme gold (0.25 mm) exceeds 45 per cent. It is expected that by2000 these resources will be the main deposits mined (Zamyatinet aI, 1991).Under real industrial conditions the losses of minus 0.25 mmmetal are 50 per cent and more. The low level of recovery of finegold is observed not only at concentrators equipped with sluices,but also at concentrators equipped with modern diaphragm andpistonless jigs (Table 1).
