White Cliffs Opal Field is situated in the Parish of Kirk, County of YulguIgra, New South Wales, about sixty miles from Wilcannia, and the River Darling. It is near the southern edge of the cretaceous basin of the interior of Queensland, New South Wales, and South Australia. Twelve miles south-west of the field, at Tarella station, a well sunk at the homestead reached silurian slates at about 127 feet, getting no water but about three miles north-west from the originally discovered and no central portion of the field, a well was sunk by the Momba, Pastoral cmpany, to a depth of 270 feet all the way through the cretaceous beds. At 250 feet a small supply of water was struck, but so much mineralised as to be quite useless. The temperature also was so high that a man could not keep his hand in it and Mr. Hogarth, the Momba Pastoral Company's manager, informs me that so corrosive was the action of the water, that a shovel left down the well for a fortnight, at the time of sinking, was completely eaten away.The well having now fallen in, I have been unable to obtain any of the water for analysis.The western termination of this portion of the cretaceous basin is situated about twenty miles from the present opal field, at which distance the slates, with (probably) devonian sandstones and quartzites resting unconformably thereon, commence to appear. The opal bearing country, as far as at present known, follows a more or less well defined line running north and south towards the northern end of the field, and north-east and south-west towards the southern extremity.

The stirred mill is regarded as one of the most efficient devices for micronising materials and has come to be actively used for preparation of fine particles. Recently, the demand for ultrafine particles was increased in many kinds of industries. In this paper, autogenous grinding to get submicron particles based on mutual friction feed material has been carried out using a stirred mill. The mill used was made of stainless steel and its volume was about 5.5 litres, and has 12 impeller blades. Sample used was limestone. In the present work, two operating parameters such as stirring speed and feed size of limestone were considered. The ground products were sieved in the size range from feed size to 325 mesh (45 lun), and from 45 to 0.17 pm the size distributions were measured by a laser diffraction and scattering method. The progress of grinding was evaluated by the increasing amount of submicron particles in products. As a result, the rotational speed of impeller with the minimum energy consumption to produce submicron particles was observed. It was found that the autogenous grinding with a stirred mill is an effective method for producing submicronized limestone.

"Predictive geometallurgical models are being developed for the Productora Cu-Au-Mo deposit based on geochemistry to reflect variability in Cu species based on Cu sequential leach data (ie oxide, transitional-oxide, transitional-sulfide, sulfide and non-recoverable Cu).Productora, located in the coastal range of northern Chile, is a magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccia-hosted, structurally controlled Cu-Au-Mo deposit hosted by a thick sequence of Jurassic rhyodacitic volcanic rocks. North and north-west striking fault sets control the distribution of mineralised breccias. Alteration is widespread, complex and pervasive. Hypogene alteration assemblages range in composition from distal magnetite-amphibole, to sodic-calcic, to sodic, to phyllic, to proximal potassic. Low-temperature advanced argillic assemblages are locally juxtaposed next to proximal high-temperature K-feldspar-tourmaline assemblages. The dominant hypogene Cu phase is chalcopyrite.A simple Cu species classification scheme based on sequential leach data and S per cent was devised to account for non-recoverable Cu (ie non-sulfide Cu), which is insoluble in weak acids. Through machine learning, a proxy for this Cu species classification scheme was developed based on: depth, Ca per cent, Cu per cent, Fe per cent, K per cent, Mn ppm, S per cent and Ln(Cu/S) plus logged regolith class, thus allowing classification to be extended to areas of the deposit where no sequential leach data are available. The modelled data has been used to generate deposit-wide 3D models for Cu species classification.The validity of the proxy Cu species classification model is being tested against the results of flotation analysis. The paper describes blast design, face control including laser profiling, selective loading of blastholes after borehole camera surveys, and techniques used to assess the effect of burden variation, the cumulative effect of drilling and delay sequence, and the effects of meteorology.

In 1955 the annual production of steel at Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., Port Kembla was 1.2 million tonne and over the following two decades this had progressively increased to the present capacity of 5.4 million tonne per annum. This increase in productivity has also been accompanied by important developments in steelmaking technology and these are explained in the chronological order in which they have taken place. Reference is made to the use of oxygen in open hearth furnaces, the B.O.S. process, the Argon-Oxygen decarburisation process for stainless steel, vacuum degassing and continuous casting. When the vacuum degassing and continuous casting units are commissioned, the Port Kembla Works will have achieved a standard of steelmaking technology equal to any in the world.

The marine portion of the Pacific Basin and Rim constitutes a significant part of the world's surface in which the mineral resources are virtually undeveloped. Indications of substantial resources have resulted in speculation and uncertainty with regard to their potential in the near term. The main issues are centered on the markets for the resource materials, the technology needs for their recovery, and the possible impacts of their development on the environment. While the governments of Japan, France, the Soviet Union, India, China, and Korea are financing new programs in deep ocean mining, the US is consolidating its early leadership by the continuation of NOAA's authority under the Deep Seabed Hard Mineral Resources Act and the Sea Grant Act, Interior's authority under the outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, and by the development of a new Marine Minerals Technology Center within the Department of Interior's mineral institutes program, managed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The Center has a Continental Shelf Division (CSD) located in Mississippi, and an Oceans Basin Division (OBD) located in Hawaii. Research and training in the divisions is directed toward the practical aspects of mineral recovery from the nearshore and deep ocean environments with a strong bias for the OBD toward industrial and international cooperative programs in the Pacific Basin and Rim. In terms of resource development, the marine minerals in the Pacific Basin may be favored in some cases, in competition with land sources, by political and environmental considerations.

China has abundant bauxite resources, but these resources are mostly of a diaspore, which has a feature of low Al2O3 to SiO2 mass ratio, typically ranging from four to six. Compared to other materials, this kind of raw materials consumes more alkaline and energy in the process of metallurgy, and incurred a high alumina production cost. To solve this problem, researchers in China have done a lot of work on removing of the silicon from bauxite. Under the impetus of these works, in 2003, the first flotation plant of diasporic bauxite in the world was constructed in Zhongzhou, Henan, China. Seven years of operating experience shows that this technology can signifi cantly reduce the costs of following-metallurgy processing. These efforts are an important reference for the processing of similar resource. In general, for Western scholars it is diffi cult to fully understand these works because most of them are published in Chinese. In this paper, a detail introduction for the research progress on China bauxite de-silica flotation was presented, these works involved crystal chemistry, wettability of bauxite minerals, collector and modifi er in bauxite fl otation and flotation practice, etc.

China has large amounts of iron ore reserves, but iron ore in China, with low-grade, small disseminated particles and many other associated minerals, is difficult to dress. In recent years, with the fast development of China's steel industry, the demand for iron ore has increased markedly. The new technologies in iron ore dressing in China are very effective in processing haematite and other difficult to dress iron ores. The iron ore grade and recovery rate has been improved. This result alleviates the difficulty in iron ore supply in China.

Traditional exploration has been undertaken by both local and overseas experts to discover tin deposits in Indonesia over almost 300 years. Indonesia is part of a tin belt which runs from Myanmar in the north through Malaysia to Singkep, Bangka, and Belitung islands in Indonesia in the south. The discovery of alluvial tin deposits is becoming harder as the more obvious geological targets are exhausted and topographical conditions become more difficult. New approaches are required to sustain successful exploration. There are indications that tin deposits can be found at depth on-shore as well as off-shore. These deposits are found associated with tough clays. On-shore tin exploration is hampered by swampy areas, while the off-shore search is often affected by difficult sea conditions. These factors lead to increases in the cost of exploration as well as the cost of subsequent production. Tin price fluctuations and environmental issues are also of major concern in the planning of the future operation of tin mining in Indonesia.

The magnitude and orientation of the in situ stressfield has been determined as a key factor in controlling the stability of openings for both coal mine development and extraction. Monitoring of roadway and pillar behaviour in conjunction with numerical analysis has identified specific stress control measures that have been successfully applied to improve productivity in underground coal mining operations. The influence of the major horizontal stressfield on the stability of openings has been identified at a wide range of sites including mines in Australia, Britain, the USA, New Zealand and Japan. Stress mapping, stress measurement and stress monitoring techniques have been applied to define the in situ stress regime and, together with the correlation of measurements of rock deformation and rock reinforcement behaviour, has enabled appropriate stress control measures to be developed. Stress control measures for development headings have required the selection of roadway orientation, roadway sequencing, reinforcement density and pillar size. The monitoring of behaviour at a range of trial sites has confirmed significant improvements in development stability. Stress control measures for longwall extraction have required rational selection of longwall orientation and extraction direction. Where a mine layout design incorporating the optimum longwall layout design has not been possible, the use of sacrificial roadways has been successfully applied to protect key roadways from stress concentration effects. Recent research has highlighted the potential of a relatively new style of gold mineralisation related to granite intrusion. New discoveries in Alaska, Central Europe and Asia and Eastern Australia with total resources of 1600 t Au offer attractive targets for regional exploration in areas which may have been overlooked in the past. A spatial information system was developed to target granite-gold systems in eastern Australia and the West coast of New Zealand, using well constrained geological and exploration models derived from current research. Target areas were recognised in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand that have similar spatial data relationships to known granite gold mineralisation elsewhere in the world. The second phase of the modelling better constrained the regional scale target areas by including more detailed geological, geochemical and geophysical data in the GIS to develop prospect-scale targets and to allow the acquisition of tenements over these areas. A geological review of each target area was carried out in the field to put the GIS models into context. The fieldwork has highlighted the potential for this style of mineralisation in New Zealand and will increase investment in mineral exploration and development in New Zealand in the near future.

Underground mines often rely on ore pass systems to ensure the transport of ore and waste. Consequently, it is important to ensure the smooth operation of such systems. Ore pass degradation that may require rehabilitation results in production delays and high operational costs. The occurrence of hang-ups within an ore pass also leads to disruption of ore production. There are important safety concerns when worker intervention is necessary to re-establish material flow in the ore pass. In order to facilitate the design of ore pass systems, mining operations often rely on past experience, or semi empirical guidelines. This paper describes recent efforts to establish a comprehensive database on current practices; encountered operational problems and solutions in ore pass design in Quebec underground mines.

Prior to 1975, most geochemical drainage surveys for gold were based on analyses for pathfinder elements, such as As and Cu, rather than direct analysis for gold, for two reasons. Firstly, analytical methods lacked the required sensitivity and precision to determine gold abundance at background levels in stream sediments (usually in the range 1 - 10 ppb). Direct analysis was also inhibited by concern about the potential for gross sampling error, brought about by the dispersion of gold as rare discrete particles of the extremely dense native metal. This sampling error, commonly termed the 'nugget effect' has two components: erratic distribution of the element within the stream environment, related to hydraulic factors, and the difficulty in taking representative samples, both in the field and later in sub-sampling for analysis. In more recent years the collection of very large samples was commonly advocated to overcome the sampling problem (Hams, 1982; Nichol, 1986).Two methods have been widely used to evaluate the gold content of bulk samples (Elliott and Towsey, 1989). The preparation and analysis of heavy mineral concentrates has in recent years been largely superseded by the leaching of gold contained in bulk samples by cyanide, commonly termed the BLEG (Bulk Leach Extractable Gold) or BCL (Bulk Cyanide Leach) methods. The terms BLEG and BCL are essentially interchangeable and the latter will be adopted for the remainder of this paper. The Circum-Pacific area is one of the most important gigantic skarn-metallogenic belts in the world. In more than 20 coastwise countries of this region, there exist thousands skarn deposits of different types. According to the differences of major metallic elements, the skarn deposits may be classified into seven subtypes, i.e. Fe, Cu, Pb-Zn, W, Sn, Mo and Au skarn deposits. In this paper, the distribution. and geological characteristics of above-mentioned types of skarn deposits are described briefly. Skarn deposits may also be classified on the basis of the dominant calc(magnesian)-silicate mineral assemblages into four types: magnesian, calcic, manganoan, and alkaline skarn types. Magnesian skarns may be associated with Fe, Cu, Au,, Sn, B, Be mineralization, calcic skarns with Fe, Cu, W, Mo, An, Be, Pb, Zn, Sn minerailization, while the alkaline skarns occur in U(Th, Nb) deposits. The skarn deposits of both East and West Pacific rims have many general characters, but have some diferences in geotectonic settings, intensities of mineralization, distribution, and metallogenic epoches. In this paper, the minerogenetic series and the mineralizing specialities of related magmatic rocks of the skarn deposits are also discussed.

Uranium occurrences and the probable Australian reserves are discussed and the recovery and processing methods used in treatment plants at Radium Hill and Port Pirie, S.A., Rum Jungle and Moline, N.T., and Mary Kathleen, Qid. are reviewed. The broad aspects of the application of nuclear power in Australia are then considered, and those factors of greatest significance are highlighted. It is these factors that are most likely to dictate the future role of nuclear generation in Australia. In commenting on private industry applications, the paper emphasises that each case must be considered on its own merits, and a warning is given that general statements can be misleading. In the long-term situation nuclear power is considered to be capable of playing a leading role and the discussion covers desalination and high load industries although short term applications appear difficult to justify. In non-power applications for nuclear energy reference is made to isotopes and the uses of nuclear devices in mining and civil engineering with a pertinent comment on safety.

The bubble size was measured in a laboratory flotation column. The effect of variables such as air flowrate, frother dosage and type, pulp density, particle size and water column height on the bubble size was investigated. The results show that an increase in either air flowrate or pulp density cause the bubble size to increase, while increases in water column height, frother dosage, surface tension or solid particle size cause the bubble size to reduce. Among the frother types tested, MIBC was found to be the most effective in reducing the bubble size.

Mining activity has been an integral component in the New Zealand economy since the early days of European settlement. Recently in common with other Pacific Rim countries there has been a resurgence of investment in gold. A sustained and increasing exploration effort has resulted in the rapid development of alluvial gold mining operations, a number of hard rock gold discoveries, and a general optimism about New Zealand's prospectivity. New Zealand's attitude to mining development, in particular hard rock gold mining is influenced by high environmental values and a concern, largely through absence of examples, that modern mining may not perform to community standards. While these environmental concerns are wide spread there is a growing realisation that gold mining, if properly managed, can take place within acceptable environmental standards and that it has the potential to contribute significantly to New Zealand's economy. New mining developments have an important role to play in this process. The mining industry in New Zealand is now at a crossroads. Having invested substantially and confirmed the potential for gold mining developments it has found itself in a rapidly changing economic environment as the Labour Government puts in place a number of fundamental economic reforms. The reforms are intended to free up the economy removing the rafts of subsidies and protective measures which have stultified initiative and growth. A fundamental reform of the public service has been initiated including corporatisation of trading activities and the establishment of a Department of Conservation to administer estensive areas of Crown land. Both petroleum and mining taxation are being reviewed with the intention of creating a more neutral competitive environment. Mining legislation is also being re-examined with both efficiency and equity objectives. While the current environment is characterised by uncertainty and rapid change, the outcome will be a more market-oriented stable policy environment, to the mutual benefit of the industry itself and the New Zealand Community.

The resurgence of Silicosis and Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis (CWP) in coalmines has placed the spotlight back on the management of worker exposure to particulate matter across all mining sectors (Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis Select Committee, 2017). There already exists a substantial body of knowledge on particulate matter and its impacts upon human health (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2018). The contribution of silica to respiratory disease is well known and there is a growing concern for exposure to diesel particulate matter. However, it is also clear that there are major gaps in our understanding. In part, those gaps relate to the contribution to adverse health effects of mineralogical constituents in the dust (LaBranche et al, 2021a). It is also becoming evident that the size and shape of the particulate matter can affect its potential impact on human health.The University of Queensland has developed a methodology for characterising respirable and inhalable dust samples using scanning electron microscopy. Multiple samples from numerous mining operations have already been analysed using the UQ methodology. The process has been successful in showing the variety of mineralogica lcomponents and particle size distributions presentin various areas of the mines.

Vitrokele technology is a resin process that can be applied in gold plants to reduce both capital and operating costs. The Vitrokele resin can be used for both precious metal recovery and for recovering free and combined cyanide from effluent streams. Vitrokele resin has been extensively tested at pilot plant level and is now applied successfully at a commercial heap leach facility in Zimbabwe where it is used in place of activated carbon for recovery of gold from pregnant leach solution. Significant capital cost savings were achieved by installation of a resin plant instead of a conventional carbon adsorption plant. Operation to-date has not seen any significant physical or chemical degradation of the resin either in terms of adsorption capacity/kinetics or physical appearance/size. This gold recovery process is equally applicable to slurry streams where it would be implemented in stirred tanks with interstage screens in a similar manner to a conventional carbon adsorption plant.
