During the past three years there have been several parties prospecting for oil in the Stat6 of Queensland, and It was: gratifying to read the newspaper headlines last Christmasabout the discovery of oil in the Moohie Nol Well. This discovery was not only a welcome Christmas present for Australia but marked up another success for the seismicmethod in exploration for oil.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the operationaI aspects of seismic work in Queensland with-emphasis on shot-haledrilling. The paper is based upon the experience of one particular seismic survey which began in December of - 1959 and is still inoperation. This survey is being conducted by the Petty Geophysical Engineering - Company of San Antonios, Texas, and the Queensland area involved is in the general vicinity of Quilpie, Dlackall and Charleville.

University education in Australia is changing, driven by greater market orientation, reduced funding available per student, especially in the higher-cost minerals industry disciplines, and the call for more flexible delivery of subjects and courses to meet changing lifestyles and expectations. The opportunity exists for a true partnership to develop between industry, government and academia that will reshape minerals education in Australia and secure the future supply of the specialists industry needs to maintain international competitiveness. If this partnership does not emerge, it is anticipated that AustraliaÆs somewhat fragmented and unstable higher education system, especially in the disciplines of particular relevance to the minerals industry, will be put under further pressure so decreasing its effectiveness to produce quality graduates. The Minerals Council of Australia in 1998 published æBack from the BrinkÆ, a discussion paper which proposed strategies to build a world class minerals tertiary education system in Australia. Those strategies are now being implemented collaboratively with principal emphasis on the disciplines of mining engineering, metallurgy and earth science and as far as process is concerned, on the necessity to æcooperate to competeÆ. For metallurgy, the challenge is to integrate more closely undergraduate teaching with the existing world-class research centres and to link the tertiary institutions in such a manner that the strengths of all components are harnessed and then made available nationally in major population centres and at remote sites where appropriate. For industry the challenge is to build effective partnerships with the academic community that will enable and assist the agreed course of action to take place.

"This paper details the many improvements possible in narrow vein mining from the use of treated mining/milling waste as mine fill. Such fill can be: treated mill tailing, cemented or uncemented; development muck, treated or untreated, cemented or uncemented; andsome combination of these materials, or surface sands/gravels. Treatments involved may be both physical (optimisation of particle size gradings) and chemical (neutralision of potentially harmful milling chemicals).Potential benefits include a reduction in: back stress; vein closure; alternate ground support requirements; mining dilution; potential for surface subsidence; and extent of surface disposal of mining/milling waste, resulting in reduced environmental impact. Considering the usually small production tonnages involved, preparation and placement of a highly applicable fill material can be economically accommodated.Emphasis is placed on steeply dipping orebodies being mined overhand, although practice in the much less steeply dipping RSA gold/platinum-type orebody is also considered.CITATION:Thomas, E G, 2012. In April, 1990 the Sydney Water Board invited bids for the construction of the Hazelbrook Carrier Section 3 being part of the Blue Mountains Sewerage Transfer Scheme. In December 1990 the contract was awarded to Costain Resources Limited, Mining Services Division for the sum of $A15.3 M. Metallurgical accounting can be defined as the monitoring of the valuable metals from the time the ore is broken at the primary crusher until the time that we have the saleable products and residues. The overall purpose of metallurgical accounting is to provide management with up-to-date inform- ation that can be used to control mining and metallurgical oper- ations. The decisions that are taken on the basis of the information that the metall- urgical accounting system provides should result in improved control and, ultimately, increased revenue. The current state of accounting is a result of an extended evolutionary process and will continue as process plants bec- ome more sophisticated. Differences in mine æcall factorsÆ and grade control reconciliation can lead to frustration between the siteÆs geoscie- ntists and its metallurgists leading to a level of distrust in the mill grade. Metallurgical accounting is not included in sufficient detail in undergraduate courses and the acceptable industry standards have developed based on what is considered acceptable to industry personnel and consultants. There is now the AMIRA P754 Metal Accounting, Code of Practice and Guidelines Handbook or reference manual. Computer based databases and spreadsheets have transformed tedious bookkeeping into an important management tool. Over time these standards have improved with developments in analytical procedures, weighing technology and sampling. This paper provides anecdotal examples of problems and improvements observed over a number of years within the gold industry in Australia and overseas.

Coal Services (Health and Safety Trust) funded ARRB Transport Research Ltd to investigate fatigue and performance of truck drivers over consecutive shifts. The main questions were to assess: What is the most important contributor to acute fatigue in mining? Is it length of shift (eg eight hours versus 12 hours) or is it time of day (eg circadian effects)? What is the limit of successive day or night shifts before chronic fatigue affects operator performance in open cut mines? The project methodology included utilising ARRB Fatigue Monitoring Devices (forced-choice stimulus reaction) in eight haul trucks, testing 24 subjects over several weeks. Each subject filled in a Fatigue Risk Questionnaire on lifestyle and health. Operators worked a 14-night, one day off, 13-day roster of 12-hour shifts in a fly-in/fly-out operation with excellent opportunities for restorative sleep between shifts. A total of 3500 hours of real-time data was collected, representing the first set of objective, real-time driver performance data for Australian mining. The data showed that for a single night of driving haul trucks, there appears to be no effect on operator fatigue from the amount of time on task (for the 12 hours). In fact performance was worse through the first eight hours than the last four. The circadian influence had a stronger affect than working more than eight hours. Of the 14 nights worked at the site, nights 13, 14, seven and two respectively, were the worst. This presents a conundrum for policy makers who may like to place caps on working hours or rosters in the hope that it will alleviate the fatigue issue. It will not. The major finding within this study is the combined influence of circadian rhythms (human body clock) and individual variability on performance. The lifestyle habits and the health of individuals have a profound effect on operator performance as shown by the strong positive correlation between high fatigue risk scores from the Fatigue Risk Questionnaire and poor performance. An individualistic approach would appear to have the best chance of reducing high potential incidents due to fatigue through successive nightshifts.

Many metallurgical operations produce fine residues and dusts as by-products which can be difficult to handle and offer little direct financial incentive to treat. There is a growing imperative to deal with these materials particularly since land fill is fast becoming an uncertain long term solution. One possible means of treatment is to extract the valuable metals while fusing the remainder into a slag. In this way valuable metal components of the material can be recovered and the less valuable components be converted into useful products, eg cements and inorganic polymers which have a high environmental stability and a growing market. The aim of this project is to establish solids injection and fusion in a slag bath as a viable method of treating industrial wastes and residues. The benefits of this approach are expected to be: the ability to treat a wide range of organic and inorganic residue materials, ease of recovery of volatile and valuable elements and the production of final materials which could be used in other industries. In ongoing experimental work at the CSIRO Minerals a 250 kg slag bath reactor has been used to test the injection of Paragoethite residue into an iron silicate based slag. An experimental apparatus has been designed and commissioned to pneumatically inject solid material at feed rates of up to 80 kg/hour. The capture efficiency of injected solids by the slag bath was calculated by monitoring the composition of the slag. Using this method of treatment, the zinc contained in the residue can be recovered as a fume by varying the oxidation state of the slag. Other valuable elements could be recovered by creating a matte or metal phase in the reactor with the final material being used in the production of cement. A capture efficiency of injected solid paragoethite particles in the slag bath of up to 97 per cent was achieved. Under the conditions of the experimental work capture efficiency was found to be independent of injection velocity and slag depth. The rate of fuming during injection was found to increase slightly with injection velocity and was independent of slag depth.

The estimation of particle liberation is important in the study of mineral concentration. With simple systems, where the densities of the components are low, the liberation can be studied directly by density fractionation. For most practical systems, and particularly for the dense, complex sulphides, the only method known is by measurement in polished section. There are two major difficulties with such measurements. Firstly, the measurements themselves are difficult and considerable care is needed before reproducible results can be achieved. Secondly, a well known stereological problem arises which gives the estimates an inherent bias. The paper discusses both aspects of the problem. The practical features of measurement are treated in detail and a method described which has been developed and proven to give reproducible estimates of the liberation in the section. This discussion relates to automated measurements by QEM*SEM and presents a way of estimating the confidence limits within which measurements lie. Comparisons are shown between measurements made by the traditional manual optical technique and automated equipment. Stereological reconstruction is also discussed briefly. Several methods have been presented in the literature but all are complex and none is yet widely accepted. Area measurements are less biased than linear estimates so a practical approach is to use area measurements in uncorrected form. The topic is still being actively researched so it is expected that one method will soon emerge as the standard technique.

Gas problems, largely instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas, arose in the early days of coal mining in Australia, leading to attempts at predrainage often including destressing. With deeper mining and new gassy areas being mined, gas problems have increased. This has led to more research, such as into coal-gas relationships, and more practical trials into seam gas drainage in both the Sydney and Bowen basins. Predrainage techniques have been devised to suit the special Australian geological conditions and to take into account the erratic occurrence of CO, (nearly 100 per cent in some cases) in the seam gas. Better mining methods and other improvements are continuing. The introduction of post-drainage has been simplified by the adaptation of long established overseas techniques and equipment.Utilisation of seam gases in Australia is complicated by the presence of CO, but even with pure CH. little has been done.Seam gas drainage has some disadvantages such as the need for, and the dangers of, complex and rigorously controlled plant. Also drained coal becomes harder and dustier.

The subject of octanes and knock in petrol engines is of general interest, not only to the engineers and chemists in the petroleum and automotive industries, but also to the motorist who wishes to see some light through the haze of propaganda regarding "super" petrols. A mixture of petrol vapour and air will explode when a spark is passed through it if it contains more than one and a half per cent. or less than six per cent. of petrol vapour by volume. In a petrol engine the mixture has to be within the explosive range before it will operate. When the spark is passed it 'ignites the petrol vapour-air mixture which burns with rapid but finite progress of the flame front 'through the unburnt gases in much the same manner that a charge of dynamite is consumed. The turbulence of the gases in the cylinder under normal operating conditions more than doubles the velocity of the flame front and enables the combustion to be completed by the end of the working (expansion) stroke:KNOCKIf the cylinder head 'is poorly designed or is covered with a deposit of carbon, it is possible for "hot spots" to develop, and these can ignite the mixture before the spark is passed. This pre-ignition gives rise to an engine knock but is accompanied by a dull thud rather than the ringing knock associated with the true "knocking" found in a petrol engine and attributed to the detonation of the mixture. The first half of the presentation covers the principles involved in project finance and the second half moves to aspects more specific to the mining industry. I have worked for 3 years at Rothschild Australia. Rothschild provide finance for projects in the mining industry, world wide. We finance both large and small projects, with facilities varying from $2m to $100m.

Because of the work of the pioneers of sampling theory, we know the principles, test work and equations to use to design sampling systems to meet targets for precision and accuracy. However, we do not see such æproperÆ systems deployed everywhere a sample is obtained around mineral processing plants. In many cases, we do not have solutions that satisfy all of the theoretical, economic and practical considerations. There are some well-known problems, such as high-volume streams with wide size distributions combined with a sparse valuable component that is heterogeneously distributed (such as gold ore SAG mill feeds). However, other difficult sampling issues are common, such as streams which vary widely over a day in flow rate and slurry density (many flotation concentrates), and loaded CIP carbon on transfer to elution. Inventory measurement issues abound, especially for leaching operations where daily inventory change is significant for metallurgical accounting. The result is that operators realise that although they issue reports daily, they do not know what is actually going on in their plant on a daily basis with sufficient confidence to quickly diagnose problems or confidently predict the benefits of potential enhancements. The industry needs practical and economic solutions that can be awarded the ætheoretically correct samplerÆ tick in order to better understand and optimise their processes.

Nifty Copper Operations was established to treat a copper orebody situated in the East Pilbara area of North West WA, located approximately 70 km west of Telfer in the Great Sandy Desert. The plant was designed to treat the oxidised portion of the orebody with underground development following at a later date. Nifty was designed to produce 16 500 tpa of copper cathode. This will increase with treatment of the chalcopyrite ore (underground resource). Ore processing is similar to other operations of this type but has its unique challenges. Problems discussed are: fine clay minerals which hinder percolation; oxidation of organic by manganese in the electrolyte; crud formation by clays; third phase emulsions; and organic carryover into the electrowinning tankhouse. As the orebody utilisation progresses, some sulphide material will require leaching and further investigations into liquor chemistry.

Transformations of minerals to processed mineral products fundamentally involve wholesale chemical change, and therefore have a high potential for the release of chemicals and wastes. In this regard minerals processing contrasts with downstream production operations, which involve mainly physical changes. The contrast with mining, which must take place where the minerals are found, is that mineral processing allows choices as to location, processes, fuels and reductants. These choices provide a foundation for dealing with issues of resource stewardship. This paper locates the mineral processing industry in the global perspective by quantifying the masses of major material inputs and outputs, based on current processing choices. Estimates for recycling have also been collated, revealing figures that differ surprisingly from commonly held impressions. The paper draws on a variety of current sources, mainly those available through the Internet, to rank the major transformed virgin mineral products by production, price and value. The figures demonstrate the dominance of Portland cement and steel in the global environmental impacts of mineral processing. Aluminium comes a distant third in the list, and the metals particularly associated with localised environmental impacts have relatively small global effects compared with those of the staple materials of our built environment. This global macro input/output perspective, with materials flows expressed per unit of virgin product, provides a benchmark for grasping sustainability challenges within specific operating businesses. Because of the global scope and pervasive impact of the minerals processing industry, the issue of resource stewardship is rising as a matter for public concern. There appears to be a developing view that the mining and mineral processing sector should take responsibility for these products throughout their various life cycles. However, in a future of stabilising consumption, dematerialisation and intensive recycling, the mining industry would only need to provide the top-up to a stock of recirculating materials. The question of responsibility for stewardship over SocietyÆs stock of materials remains open.

This paper reviews the present status of mining engineering education in Australia, outlines the main objectives of current programs, and looks at some of the difficulties that need to be overcome to maintain and improve current standards.A case is made for greater co-ordination and co-operation between the institutions themselves, and between industry and the professional bodies to ensure the highest standards are achieved in the most efficient way.

The concept of "profit" is implicit in the definition of an ore reserve. It is suggested that the flexible concept "economic" is more appropriate. This allows different economic considerations to be taken to account when determining what is ore at the feasibility study stage; during actual mining production; before mine closure; and from the viewpoint of the national economy. Economic factors which are highly variable, and largely beyond a mining enterprise's control, affect the economic exploitation of a mineral resource. Major economic factors include: metal prices; operating costs; the cost of original and replacement capital equipment; the cost of capital; taxation and royalties; inflation; exchange rates and the state of the world economy. The paper suggests why a careful quantification of the average value, trend, and variation from the trend of major economic factors should be made and how this will lead to a better definition of ore reserves. The paper also discusses the necessity of reappraising economic factors during the life of a mine in order to maximise the economic surplus and to minimise the wastage of natural, economic and human resources employed in mining.

The purpose of any feasibility study is to determine whether a particular investment or management program will enhance shareholder wealth by, for example, producing an economic return in excess of the cost of equity capital.The threshold rate of return conventionally used in gold feasibility studies is higher than the cost of equity capital, meaning that some viable projects are wrongly described as being sub-economic with their development deferred.Is the industry failing to fully realise its potential? Aside from important technical considerations that determine the cost of exploiting inground inventories, feasibility studies need to incorporate expectations about future gold prices, exchange rates, interest rates and tax rates.Rather than revert to speculation, insights from capital markets give a rigorous framework in which these parameters can be determined for feasibility purposes. Separate questions sometimes, and then inadequately, addressed by feasibility studies include: ò Is it optimum? Many projects are expanded soon after project commissioning - what does this say about the quality of the initial feasibility study? Moreover, does the rate of extraction really matter? ò What is it worth? Although feasibility studies are designed to address viability rather than valuation, such studies are never- theless used by the industry as further evidence that the equity markets have got it wrong again! More likely the problem is with the financial slide rule being used. ò Can it be debt financed? The bankable feasibility study has entered the vocabulary of the gold mining industry but what does it mean? Does it matter anyway how the project is to be Financed?
