This paper contains an account of some creep tests on electrolytic lead and some of its alloys. The stresses used in determining creep were 500, 350, and 200 lb. per sq.' in. The alloys contained silver, bismuth, tellurium, antimony and zinc respectively. All were castin vacuo, and tested "as rolled." Tests were done also on electrolytic lead which had been cast in air.The electrolytic lead contained 0.0005% total impurities.The preparation and vacuum casting of this lead have been described in a previous paper in this series. The preparation of the alloys, and the air casting of the electrolytic lead, are described in the next section.EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE.Every effort was made to keep the vacuum-cast specimens from contact with the atmosphere throughout their history.The ingots were stored eIther in a vacuum desiccator or immersed in heavy oil. The creep specimens were coated with vaseline except during rolling, etching and photography, which involved exposure to the atmosphere for about 45 minutes all told.It is not claimed that vaseline is a perfect shield against the intrusion of atmospheric gases. The search for modem casting plant concepts today focuses more and more on the harmonisation and optimisation of overall concept lines to obtain a continuous quality control and reduce the cost of production (Figure 1). Fin I As far as continuous casting plant concepts are concerned, this specifically requires an optimal adaptation and flexible operation when converting liquid steel into a directly processable product without any in-between treatment. Continuous casters need to fully satisfy the requirements of both the upstream steelmaking facilities as well as the downstream rolling facilities.

The achievement of high availability of the Grey River Gold Mining Limited's alluvial gold dredge is a tortuous task which will rely upon the dedication of all staff employed at Grey River Gold Mining Limited (GRGML). The persistent adoption of new technology and better operating procedures, combined with a strong commitment to preventative and predictive maintenance, is necessary. The Grey River Gold Mining Limited alluvial gold dredge is operating in a relatively low grade alluvial gold deposit and hence relies on a high throughput of ore to be profitable. To achieve the required high material throughput the dredge incorporates an overburden removal system which operates simultaneously with a conventional bucketline system.   The overburden system incorporates a cutter wheel and suction pump configuration which is dedicated to removing the low grade (5 mg gold/m3 gravel) overburden. The bucketline conveys the richer grade payzone gravels (up to 890 mg/m3 gravel) to the recovery plant mounted onboard the dredge. The horizon for the overburden system approximates 15 m and the payzone terminates at the interface of the old man rock and the alluvial gravels at a variable depth averaging 22 m.   From a mechanical engineering perspective the dredge is a machine comprised of two materials handling systems which are controlled by Operations Staff and electronic process control systems.   The availability of such a materials handling system is a function of four variables: 1. The environment that the machine operates in. 2. The ability of the people operating the machine. 3. The design of the mechanisms, the configuration that they are grouped in and the effectiveness of the process control systems which control the mechanisms. 4. The procedures utilised to predict the performance of the machines and the skill of staff to analyse that data and carry out effective maintenance.

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) operates one iron ore mine, three concentration plants and three pelletising plants in Kiruna, Sweden. The current methods of separation at the beneficiation plants are low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse apatite flotation, where the wet LIMS stage is regarded as the crucial part of silica separation from the ore. Because future silica levels are expected to increase in the incoming material to the beneficiation plants, geometallurgy has become an important area of development and research.A laboratory-scale methodology was developed for the systematic characterisation of the ore for mineral processing, with the focus on the high silica ore type B2 and newly discovered subtypes. This methodology combines mineralogical, geochemical and process mineralogical characteristics. Automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN®) is used to study the modal mineralogy, the distribution of silicate minerals in different particle size classes after comminution, the deportment of silicon (Si) between various silicates and the degree of liberation and intergrowth of magnetite and silicates. An essential stage in the systematic characterisation of the ore deposit for mineral processing is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the full scale at the concentration plants. This is achieved by using empirical models based on the data collected at the mineral processing plants. As the first step to implement the geometallurgical information, the current geological model is reconstructed with the mineralogy and the two, newly defined subtypes of high silica ore type B2 are separated into different domains.To study the reduction of the SiO2 content in the magnetite concentrate, a large-scale reverse cationic silicate flotation laboratory test program was initiated in early spring 2016. This program investigated potential silicate flotation in the beneficiation plants at the Kiirunavaara site. The second target is to implant mineral processing parameters into the block model based on the new geological model. This information provides a good basis for making a prognosis for mine planning and a quality prognosis regarding the crude ore for mineral processing.CITATION:Niiranen, K, 2017. Fluidized bed roasting of copper concentrates from Mt. Morgan, Mt. Lyell, Mt. Isa, and Peko was performed in a 3 ft 6 in diameter, slurry fed, pilot plant roaster operated under autogenous conditions to produce calcines with desirable leaching properties. A 12 in. diameter, externally heated roaster, provided with a dry feed system, was also used.An account is given of important factors which influence roaster behaviour and performance, and the effects of operating variables on calcine composition and leaching properties are described. Due to copper ferrite formation, a maximum of approximately 50 per cent of the copper in the calcines may be in the form of CuO before the copper leach efficiency falls significantly below lOO' per cent. Recovery of gold by cyanidation of leach residues was consistently high and independent of roasting conditions.INTRODUCTIONIn traditional practice copper is produced by pyrometallurgical techniques when the ,copper minerals in the ore or concentrate are predominantly sulphides, and by hydrometallurgy when the minerals are oxidized. Copper smelting is most suited to large scale operations, and for many years small to medium size mines with sulphide orebodies have been interested ill; alternative processes.Since hydrometallurgical plants (ie. leaching and electrowinning plants) are essentially unitized, they may be scaled down in output without much loss in efficiency or increase in processing cost, and many proposals have been made for the application of this type of process following roasting of the sulphides to render the copper soluble. However, until the advent of fluidized roasting, it was not possible to control the roasting operations sufficiently precisely to produce calcines consistently of the required leaching characteristics.

Estimation of iron ore grade distribution has been attempted using geostatistics and artificial neural network (ANN) based models for a banded iron formation (BIF) type iron ore deposit of East India. Geologically, it is a supergene iron ore formation through an enrichment process of parent material (BIFs) by gradual leaching of impurities, namely SiO2 and Al2O3. As the degree of leaching differs spatially, distribution of Fe varies depending on local controls of ore formation. While geostatistical methods work on models based on spatial correlations of mineralisation parameters, ANN models a non-linear distribution and is widely used as a global approximator. Spatial distribution modelling of Fe values has been carried out employing ordinary kriging (OK) and sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS). Non-linear modelling has been performed using hybrid neural networks (HNN) that provided an alternative option for grade estimation. Classical statistical modelling revealed a negatively skewed 3-parameter lognormal Fe population having a mean of 60.49 per cent with a skewness of -0.08 and a kurtosis of 2.60. Semi-variography and geostatistical estimation employing OK procedure led to block-by-block kriged estimates with associated kriging variance, which provided an overall mean kriged estimate and kriging variance of Fe as 60.29 per cent and 7.76 (per cent)2 respectively. SGS procedure revealed a mean of 60.71 per cent and a standard deviation of 5.89 per cent with minimum and maximum values as 45.12 per cent and 68.70 per cent respectively in respect of Fe. HNN model provided values of mean squared error (MSE) and correlation coefficient (R2) as 12.33 and 0.61 respectively, thereby exhibiting the robustness of the model to sustain maximum heterogeneity within the target domain. A comparison of Fe grade estimates obtained by kriging, simulation and HNN models more or less maintain similar distribution patterns that are close to the sample data. It is thus opined to carry out the grade prediction exercise employing all these three modelling approaches to obtain alternative scenarios for improved mine planning and design exercises. In a continental environment, sediment mobilisation, dispersion and deposition are mainly controlled by mass gravity and streamflow processes. Alluvial sedimentary systems have an important economic value because of their capacity to host mineral resources. In the Hamersley Province, alluvial iron deposits (including the well-known detrital iron deposits and channel iron deposits) play an increasing role on the commodity market. Alluvial deposits exploration is challenging and generally involves geomorphologic and stratigraphic field studies, as well as expensive exploratory surface sampling and drilling. We applied a new surface processes modelling technique to investigate iron rich material, ie the erosion product of bedded iron formations -dispersion in the Hamersley Province. LECODE is a 3D-parallel surface processes forward modelling code designed to compute surface flow and solve erosion, transport and sedimentation on the geological time scale. The code offers new quantitative ways to better understand how sedimentary deposits develop in intra-continental and channel environments. Here we show that our integrated forward model is capable of opening a window to the construction of sedimentary architectures, including facies distribution, deposit thickness and development of heterogeneities such as mineral traps over the modelled domain. The model results represent 1 Ma of surface evolution and are validated through comparison to published paleovalleys map and known occurrences of iron ore deposits. This numerical modelling approach allows for the first time to track alluvial materials from source to sink through time, test existing geological models and faithfully reproduce the first order distribution of alluvial iron deposits in an area of interest. This work strongly suggests the presence of iron rich alluvial deposits reserves under cover, in unexplored detrital fans in the Fortescue Valley. This method, potentially coupled with sediment geochemistry and basin analyses studies, has the potential to maximise alluvial iron deposits exploration success, while reducing exploration cost and associated environmental impact.CITATION:Duclaux, G, Salles, T and Ramanaidou, E R, 2013. The Mt Tom Price orebody of Hamersley Iron Pty Limited consists of a folded hematite - shale sequence capped by a layer of goethite. Consequently, variations in iron content occur within the ore body, and as the overall grade is below that required to make specification products, selective mining must be carried out. A necessary preliminary to quality control of products based on selective mining is the production of advance data on the tonnages and grades of material to be expected in future mining areas. Bench plans showing zones of different grades and types of material anticipated are prepared from structural geological information. The grades of materials on a bench are essentially governed by the positions and attitudes of the shale bands. Quality control is exercised by blending different grades and types of material in primary crusher feed. Iron grade is the prime grade consideration although sometimes the level of phosphorus content must be considered. Pre-production grades are determined from assay of samples taken from blast hole cuttings. As shales are more friable than hematite, product fines are always lower in iron grade than the lump product. The realisation of contract specification grade is more difficult with fines than with lump, so maintaining the correct fines grade becomes a prime factor in quality control. Control of fines grade is presently effected by aiming for an appropriate feed grade to the primary stockpile. Studies to estimate fines grade directly by qualitatively taking into account material types are in progress. Quality control measures are checked by monitoring the crushing and screening plant output, and taking appropriate compensatory actions in the mine when required. Minor fluctuations in quality of fines can be blended out on stockpiles. The quality control measures described ensure constant quality products, and a good recovery of high grade material from the deposit.

Recent exploration has identified the presence of detrital iron deposits (DIDs) associated with banded iron formation (BIF) units in the north-west of the Congo Craton, Gabon. The regional geology comprises a complex of granitoids and gneisses assigned to the Archaean Chaillu Complex, within which older slivers of lower amphibolite-grade greenstones are preserved including muscovite-biotite-garnet-bearing felsic schist, amphibolite and BIF. These units are typically overlain by several metres of residuum comprising colluvium, eluvium and duricrust. The residuum is overlain by a regionally extensive loess cover from 2 m to 10 m thick.The DIDs occur within the weathered residuum as mostly unconsolidated gravels with lesser canga (CAN) duricrust draped over deeply weathered hematite. Head grades are in the range of 45 to 52 per cent Fe. Fresh BIF, located from 30 to 50 m below surface, is comprised of magnetite-quartz±amphibole. The detrital iron gravels are comprised of rod- and plate-shaped clasts of hematite (martite)-maghemite-goethite composition, in a ferruginous sand to clay-sized matrix. The DID form ridges and plateaus that coincide with magnetic highs defined using high-resolution ground magnetic surveys.The field relations and petrography indicate that the detrital iron accumulations are the result of weathering (including enrichment) and erosion of primary BIF. This includes removal of quartz, further oxidation and re-cementation of BIF to form ferruginous caprock. This cap and the in situ oxidised BIF were subsequently disaggregated and liberated, and further weathered to form the detrital iron accumulations.Metallurgical test work on bulk detrital iron samples has shown this material can be upgraded to lump and fines iron ore products with grades of 62 to 65 per cent Fe using simple scrubbing and wet screening, followed by dense media separation of the -1 mm fraction, with overall mass yields from 75 to 85 per cent. The West Coast region of the South Island is situated astride the Pacific û Australian plate boundary zone. The most significant component of this zone is the Alpine Fault. A variety of reconstructions of the pre-Alpine Fault plate tectonic configuration of the New Zealand continental area have been attempted over the past 25 years or so. Most of these have not been closely constrained by a regional compilation of field data related to the age and horizontal displacement history of the Alpine Fault. A model in which the Alpine Fault was initiated no earlier than the interval 18 - 16.5 Ma (B.P.) is proposed, a significantly younger age of inception than has been widely accepted as the onset of dextral displacement along the plate boundary through the South Island. A subsequent history of displacement is presented consistent with the West Coast basin stratigraphy. The alluvial gold content of some parts of the Miocene to Pleistocene conglomerate sequences is also discussed.

Coal mining dating from the 1850s was fairly widespread. Other minerals were obtained on a small scale. Manufacture of mining' machinery stimulated industrial engineering enterprises. Schools of mines played a significant part in advancing technical skills and several remain as museums. Surviving mine structures and site relics are part of the industrial heritage signifying the technological and economic development of a small isolated nation. Some of these are described. Identification, recording and preservation where practicable is advocated.

Powders prepared from the algae Gracilaria secundata, Ulva lactuca and Ecklonia radiatawere shown to provide sole nutritional support for microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of low-grade manganese dioxide ore. G. secundata was the most effective bacterial nutrient giving 32 per cent recovery of Mn++, at an average rate of 63 mg Mn++/litre/day and a yield of 24 mg Mn++/g dry powder in microaerobic cultures containing 1.5 per cent (w/v)MnOz ore and 3per cent (w/v) powder over 14 days. Although G. secundata was approximately half as effective as molasses in supporting microbial decomposition ofMnOz, possible on-site growth ofthe alga could be economicaIIy more practical than transporting carbohydrate to a distant mine site.

The need for the hydraulic transportation of coal in the New South Wales coal industry, both from the coal face to the surface and from the coal mine to the consumer or the port for export, is explained. Details of research projects currently in progress and involving the hydraulic transportation of New South Wales coals are given together with information on the hydraulic transportation of coal in the United States of America. The potential of hydraulic transportation as a viable alternative to the proposed expansion and upgrading of the New South Wales railway system to meet the projected New South Wales coal production to the year 2000 is described.

Although mining is an old industry its management is quite a new science, and its complications are now being recognised as demanding expert knowledge in many branches of technical and professional education. Not the least amongst these isaccountancy, for probably its most important problem is "How to control the expenditure." Unlike most businesses a mining company stands almost entirely in the light of a purchaser in the world's markets, and not as a seller, except say for product so the established and perfected systems of modern industries cannot be adopted for mining purposes. For this reason it has been left for late years to consider the matter seriously, and now a number of well-managed concerns have devised costs systems to suit their own requirements.Very little, however, has been published and even that is disjoined and difficult to make use of. Some of the costs systems in vogue, although elaborate and imposing, are not of very great value for keeping check on wasteful expenditure, or for displaying the commercial effect brought about 'by any particular change in practice, or by an addition or alteration to a portion of existing plant.

Detailed landform designs were completed for six (integrated) iron ore waste rock dumps at a Western Australian iron ore mine site to meet closure objectives and to optimise material movements for closure. The designs were based on specific physical and geochemical properties of waste material and the design was undertaken to enhance long-term stability of the dumps and optimise material movements, and therefore minimise closure cost. Construction of the re-shaped waste rock dumps have been completed. Following construction, surface material characteristics were found to deviate from those used in the design assessment. Materials present at surface following re-shaping were generally finer textured than those sampled for modelling. It is anticipated that the embankment slopes may experience increased rates of surface erosion compared to the rates predicted from modelling and used in design. The finer textured material is thought to be generated from exposing finer material that has migrated into the coarser matrix over time or that was not present in the sampled top surface of the landforms. This is due to armouring processes over time and this phenomenon is likely to recur following further wet seasons. The majority of the waste materials present in the waste rock dumps were subgrade banded iron formations (BIF) and chert, which are generally competent and geochemically inert. Some waste material was known to have an elevated risk of erosion but present in relatively small quantities. The presence of a large number of dolerite dyke swarms indicates appreciable volumes of dolerite were produced as waste from the pits. This material has an elevated risk of being highly erodible/dispersive. Clays and shales are also likely to be present in the dumps and are considered to be less competent material (relative to the BIF/chert). Analysis of rock discontinuities, collected using a scanline method, has been undertaken at the Iron Duke open cut mine, on the southern margin of the Middleback Range in the Gawler Craton, South Australia. The iron mineralisation, which is a product of supergene enrichment of carbonate sediments, is located on the W (western) limb of a gently N plunging D2 macrosyncline. Mesofolds plunge shallowly to the NE or steeply to SE, suggesting two shortening events, of which the second produced significant macrofolds. Discontinuities include:faults and shears which display variable orientations, mainly striking WNW dipping steeply N; mesofractures or joints maintaining a well constrained orientation, dipping steeply S, subvertical striking E-W; and bedding surfaces which are folded about a gently N plunging axis. Through this example of the regional control exerted on local discontinuities, it is clear that discontinuities are not randomly distributed as often assumed in purely statistical approaches. Commonly for rocks of any age there is a distinct discontinuity pattern, reflecting the geological deformation history. If the controls exerted on local rock discontinuities can be determined and assigned a number related to their significance, the way forward is available to develop a site specifc knowledge base that can make realistic predictions for any position in a given rock mass. Such a procedure would involve assessment of the regional geology, linked to scanned discontinuities either via manual or automatic means. Recent advances in automatic scanning rock faces (eg by the I-SiTE Laser Radar) to determine discontinuities distributions, enable the rapid calculation of rock characteristics. This is a significant advance in rock engineering, providing a method of safe and quick collection of data. However it creates problems in the presence of an increase in the geotechnical data available, which should be assessed in the context of the regional geology. Although techniques are underway to analyse post-blast discontinuities, the next signifant potential advance in this area could be the integration of a knowledge based system to assess discontinuities ahead of mining, incorporating regional assessment and human intuition.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baiyinnuo’er Zn-Pb deposit is a typical skarn deposit in NE China. Skarn and orebodies mainly occur between different units of the Lower Permian Huanggangliang Formation carbonates-sandstone-mudstone or within the contact between intrusions and marble. Skarn minerals are dominated by prograde garnet and clinopyroxene, and the main ore minerals are sphalerite and galena. We conducted single fluid inclusion compositional studies using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry on clinopyroxene (pre-ore-stage mineral) and sphalerite and calcite (syn-ore-stage minerals). The results show that the Baiyinnuo’er fluids are distinctly different from basinal brine but similar to magmatic fluid, thereby indicating that the deposit has a dominantly magmatic origin. This interpretation has also been supported by the Cl/Br mole ratios, which remain stable (~500) in different fluid stages. The decreases for most of the elements in the fluid inclusions from pre-ore-stage clinopyroxene to syn-ore-stage sphalerite and calcite suggest that mixing with groundwater has occurred during mineralisation, with significant Zn, Pb and Ag deposition.CITATION:Shu, Q, Hammerli, J, Chang, Z, Lai, Y and Huizenga, J-M, 2015. The process of longwall coal extraction coal causes fractures in the overlying and underlying strata and these fractures become pathways for gas released from adjacent coal seams to flow into the mine workings and contaminate the ventilation air. If the rate of gas emission exceeds the diluting capacity of the ventilation air, the gas concentration will increase and exceed the statutory limit resulting in production delays.All potential gas sources within the planned mining area, including coal seams located above and below the working seam, should be identified and sufficient gas data collected and used to determine the specific gas emission from each gas source. Gas reservoir and emission modelling is recommended to determine specific gas emission and changes in gas emission from individual sources over the planned mining area. Accurate gas reservoir and emission modelling provides the information required to accurately design gas drainage programs to effectively manage gas emissions and minimise the risk of ‘gas-outs’.Given the increasing occurrence of incidents of gas concentration in ventilation air exceeding the 2.0 per cent statutory limit and changes to mine plans to avoid ‘difficult-to-drain’ areas, it is apparent that many operations are not effectively utilising gas reservoir and emission modelling to identify high gas emission areas and are not completing sufficient gas drainage in advance of planned mining.The process of gas reservoir and emission modelling to support gas drainage design to control tailgate gas concentration and fugitive emissions is presented and discussed.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017.
