Currently raw brown coal is fired in the Latrotx; 'ahcc th,iki~, Lanying with it two major penalties, (a) boiler efficiency of 65 - 70 per cent (in terms of GCV), (b) much higher boiler cost than for black coal. Drying the coal, in energy-efficient, and cost-efficient manner, opens the way to efficiencies of order 88 per cent and enables the lower cost black coal type boilers to be used. With the higher boiler efficiency goes much higher combustion temperatures and the effect of this on radiative heat transfer is a major factor in reducing boiler cost. In a fluidised-bed combustor the temperature is controlled to 800C - 900C. In a pulverised fuel combustor higher temperatures are however achieved and can increase boiler fouling due to the salt content of the coal. This is a problem which needs to be solved. Victoria has the prospect of lifting efficiency from 28/29 per cent to 35 per cent, of reducing carbon dioxide output correspondingly and reducing cost of power stations. So far as gasification is concerned, efficient removal of liquid water from the coal is important to the overall efficiency.

The Johnny Mercer lyrics 'You've got to accentuate the positive, Eliminate the negative, Latch on to the affirmative à' would best sum up the traditional approach to community relations in the mining industry. This '90s 'Public Relations spin' approach, usually backed up by scientific data, technical reports and graphs outlining risk probability and the impact potential on people and communities, is being challenged. Challenged by communities who have greater access to information, demand greater levels of transparency and corporate responsibility of large corporate operations and possess greater awareness of the communities they live in.   The growth of the environmental movement, of anti-globalisation, anti corporatism, apprehension of a large corporate's ability to deal with community issues, and a lack of faith in the abilities of regulators to regulate corporate activities, means our industry faces challenges on multiple fronts. It must now be able to address these from a personal/community perspective if it is to remain relevant within communities.   One of the keys to this is linking the internal activities and responsibilities to the externals concerns and demands for higher levels of operation and care.   This presentation draws on Corporate Public Affairs trends, functions and approaches and the application to External Affairs activities within Newmont Waihi Gold's operations in Waihi and regional exploration activities throughout the Hauraki Goldfields.   The approach presented works on the philosophy that communities don't necessarily have to like what we do, but should be able to identify and recognise the way in which we involve them in decision making, communicate our intentions and respond to issues.

Modem mineral exploration and development takes place within a data-rich context underpinned by a wide range of data acquisition, processing and interpretation technologies. This leads to requirements for consistent and explicit methods by which the relative risks - or success probabilities - of exploration programs can be assessed and communicated. Bayesian risk assessment methods are outlined which provide a starting point for this more rigorous approach to exploration investment.   Effective governance of information technologies becomes a core function of the modem competitive Board. As such it becomes a component of any business audit and any assessment of the quality and success potential of a company. Limited data however suggest that the average Board may be under-represented in this increasingly critical skill area.

Many future and current block and panel caves extract ore from veined rock masses. These rock masses are composed of open joints forming blocks or rock with healed networks of veinlets. These two types of discontinuities pose a challenge for rock mass characterisation and classification due to difficulties in distinguishing actually open joints from healed but weak veins when diamond core drilling and excavation blasting practices disturb the rock mass. The inability of separating characteristics of open joints and healed veins has often resulted in an underestimation of the rock mass quality and as a consequence led to inappropriate assessments of rock mass response to mining (ie rock mass behaviour) and consequently deficient excavation stability assessments and ground support designs. In this paper, guidelines are provided to improve the characterisation and classification of veined rock masses. It is shown how veined rock masses can be mischaracterised resulting in often incorrect forecasting of rock mass behaviour. Following this, the classification of veined rock masses is examined. It is shown how the primary classification systems (ie Q – Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974; rock mass rating (RMR) – Bieniawski, 1976) may not lead to reliable ratings in veined rock masses if care is not taken to differentiate between open joints and veins of varying strength. Examples are provided to illustrate how the Q and RMR systems are insensitive to veining. At Waiuta near Reefton there is a remarkable vein of quartz <1 m thick which, apart from small offsets on late-stage faults, is a sheet like body essentially continuous down-dip and along-strike for> 1 km. The vein strikes NNE and dips steeply west (032/78¦W). From 1906-1951 the Blackwater mine produced 740,404 ounces of gold from the vein, called the æBirthday ReefÆ, which was one third of the total production from Reefton Goldfield and the fourth largest gold mine in New Zealand. Within the mine the vein is disrupted into a series of northeast-plunging shoots by late-stage faults. Similar faults, but with larger displacements, were thought in the past to truncate the vein at the northern and southern ends of the mine. The implication of this fault dissection model is that offset remnants of the vein await discovery. This study investigated the geometry of the vein and its relationship to host-rock structures and late-stage faults. A new model considers folding and lithological variation in the host-rocks to be fundamental in controlling the scale and geometry of veining, but does not rule out the possibility of some late-stage fault dissection. The Birthday Reef truncates 200-400 m wavelength folds in Greenland Group host-rocks at c.10¦ angle, that results in variation in the structural properties of host-rocks along strike every ~1350-2500 m. The spacing of fold hinges in the wall-rock veins is equivalent to the strike length of historic mining, implying that the Birthday Reef is probably hosted in a single limb of a fold. Similar relationships between mineralisation and host-rock folds appear to be present elsewhere in the Reefton Goldfield (e.g. Capleston and Murray Creek group of mines). Exploration targets are located one fold wavelength (c.1350-2500 m) further along strike from the Blackwater mine and relatively barren rock is expected in between the mine and target areas. Refining the location of folds and different host rock lithologies, using geophysical data and quality geological mapping, is the key to reducing exploration risks and discovering further resources.

Based on the concepts of statistical thermodynamics of athermal mixtures, an approach is developed which is capable of quantitatively explaining the thermodynamic properties of binary silicate systems. Expressions for the ionic fractions of various anionic linear and nonlinear chain polymers are derived. The developed expressions for free energy of mixing are tested by applying these to the system PbO-SiO2. The ionic fractions of various chain polymers in this system are calculated. The two cases, namely, of linear and nonlinear chain polymers are compared with each other.Limitations of earlier models are pointed out.

Dust sampling is pivotal in estimating the ‘dose’ of dust exposure and in deriving dose-response curves in epidemiological studies. Over the last half century, gravimetric sampling has been the fundamental means for dust exposure monitoring using recognised respirable size-selective standards. In Australia, a gravimetric sampling technique has been followed since 1983 using the Higgins-Dewell (HD) type cyclones (AS2985). The re-emergence of ‘Black Lung’ or Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis (CWP) in Queensland, Australia has re-kindled the need for better understanding of personal dust monitoring, compliance determination, accuracy, timeliness of sampling results and dust control systems. Reporting dust levels in real time empowers miners and operators to take immediate action to avoid being exposed to excessive airborne dust. Two decades of intensive research in the USA has led to the introduction of gravimetric based continuous personal dust monitors (CPDMs) called PDM3700 as compliance tools. The new real-time mass based sensor is a continuous mass based dust monitor using the Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) principle and is regarded as significantly superior to the current gravimetric sampling methodology.Recently the overall respirable dust standard in USA coalmines has been reduced from the historic 2.0 to 1.5 mg/m3. This paper provides the results of a comparative pairwise study of an existing gravimetric sampler and the PDM3700 carried out in 3 different Australian underground mines. The field results consistently suggest that there is a significant ‘measurement bias’ between the current gravimetric HD sampler and the PDM3700 monitor operated using a similar HD type cyclone. The results show that the currently used cyclone measurements are approximately 59 per cent higher than the ‘auditable’ PDM3700 monitor data at the current compliance limit of 3 mg/m3. Based on a review of the extensive data collected, the differences can in part be attributed to the aerosol size selectivity of the samplers with the current gravimetric sampler used in mines, collecting more larger sized particles (D90 of 15 µm). This finding has significant consequences for historic exposure results and their use in medical surveillance programs, as well as the current approach to non-compliance determination.CITATION:Belle, B, 2017. OK Tedi Mining Ltd. (OTML) is in the process of optimising the concentrator performance. One aspect that has been recently implemented is an upgrade of the existing expert control philosophy on the grinding circuit and this will be the topic of this paper. Ore grinding in SAG mills is a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) process subject to several disturbances, most typical being quick acting disturbances such as changes in ore characteristics like hardness and particle size and slow acting disturbances such as ball charge variations and liner wear. The OTML SAG mills treat ore from diverse ore bodies and receive fresh feed subject to large changes in particle size. These circumstances make these mills particularly challenging to control. In this paper, a comparative analysis is presented between the performance of the OTML SAG mill #2 before and after the commissioning of a hybrid control strategy. The strategy uses Expert Knowledge combined with advanced disturbance rejection to reduce the variability of the main process variables, especially pressure and power. It further optimises the overall operation by driving the SAG mill #2 against process constraints (e.g. high power, high motor temperature and high scats recycle rate) and maintaining the operation at or near this point. This strategy is implemented by a combination of the manipulated variables (i.e. fresh feed tonnage and % solids) at any given time.The paper will present trends and a statistical analysis of the comparative results of the mill operation over a period of months, showing a 30% reduction in mill power / pressure variability and a 12% improvement in average power drawn. An increase in throughput was also observed, but cannot be conclusively attributed to the change in mill control due to other changes that were made to the SAG mill #2 during the period of comparison. In an earlier paper (Stanton, 1953) a brief account was given of the geological environment and structure of the Lloyd Copper Mine orebody, Burraga, N.S.W. The present paper is concerned with the chemical and mineralogical features of the ore from this mine.Investigation has been made difficult because of inaccessibility of the workings, which have been fallen in for many years. The exact positions within the orebody of the specimens described in this paper are known in only a few cases. The specimens examined are from the collections of the Mining and Australian Museums, Sydney, and from material collected by the writer from the upper parts of the mine and from various dumps about the old workings.However, no significant variations in the nature (as distinct from grade) of the ore have been mentioned in the old reports, or by Carne (1908) or Kenny (1928), so it is likely that the specimens examined are reasonably representative of the orebody as a whole.CHEMICAL CONSTITUTIONThe ore is of simple and apparently very uniform composition.It is essentially a copper ore, with minor amounts of zinc and very minor amounts of lead. Plotting of copper against zinc shows a more or less sympathetic relationship between these at least as far as 20 per cent. copper - the highest grade assayed during the present investigation. The trend of the plots indicates a Cu/Zn ratio of about 15/1 to this point. Lead is very low and extremely sporadic, showing no clear relationships with the other metals.MINERAL COMPOSITIONThe principal non-opaque minerals are quartz and sericite, and these are accompanied by smaller quantities of muscovite, calcite and biotite. This paper discusses the geotechnical condition of bedding shears and small- and large-scale faults and shears in Archean banded iron formation (BIF) bedrock, based on observations of core and televiewer images. Information that can be collected includes the orientation of defects, infill thickness, strength and material type, defect shape and surface roughness.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may be critical to slope design where performance is structurally controlled with bedding dipping out of a wall. The intensity of development of the bedding shear is a useful indicator of the amount of shearing a bedding surface has been subjected to. This can allow for engineering judgement to be used in adopting peak or residual shear strengths along defect surfaces when developing the design.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may also contribute to the blockiness and degradation of a rock mass where the structural orientation is otherwise favourable. Additionally the condition, thickness and strength of infill of major fault structures can affect slope design and performance, depending on orientation.Comparison of the condition of structures observed in core with the corresponding in situ televiewer image has been made to assess what characteristics are most accurately captured by each technique and whether the additional information gathered from using the televiewer technique is justified by the cost. Extensive deposits of brown coal exist in the Gippsland Basin, primarily in the Latrobe Valley. The total quantities of economically winnable coal in this region of Victoria and in other smaller fields are large enough to adequately assure Victoria's future electricity needs and to also provide large quantities for alternative applications, including liquefaction. As a result of the recent conflict in the Middle East attention has again been focussed on the production of synthetic fuels from coal. There have been many investigations over the years into the production of oil from Victorian brown coal. The purpose of this paper is to summarise the scope, objectives and major findings of these studies, with the emphasis on the direct hydrogenation route for converting brown coal to oil. The principal alternative processes are carboniastion and hydrotreatment of the product tar, or gasification and Fischer Tropsch synthesis of liquids from the product gas. The attractions of Victorian brown coal which have encouraged these studies include: ò the vast reserves of Victorian brown coal and the favourable conditions for low cost mining, ò the high quality of the coal (low ash, sulphur and nitrogen contents), ò the high reactivity of the coal giving high yields of product in hydrogenation to liquid fuels, ò the extensive data base available on the resource and its characteristics, and ò the availability of a skilled workforce and extensive infrastructure in the Latrobe Region to support a major resource development project. These advantages have been partially offset by: ò the high moisture content of the brown coal and the cost of drying, and ò the priority previously given to electricity generation in the allocation of the brown coal resource.

A new process for leaching zinc sulphide concentrates with gaseous mixtures of SO2 and O2 in aqueous solution is described.The reaction of SO2/O2 with Rosebery, Mt. Isa, Broken Hill and Elura zinc concentrates yields zinc and iron sulphates, elemental sulphur and some sulphuric acid. Rates of zinc extraction are controlled by a surface chemical reaction without apparent interference from the elemental sulphur layer for SO2 concentrations up to 9 per cent in the gas phase. Pyrite in concentrate exerts an activating effect, possibly through galvanic interaction with the sphalerite. Metal extractions are dependent on SO2 and O2 tenors of the gas, particle size, and the acidity and zinc content of the solution, but are independent of the ferric ion level. Extractions also reach maxima at about 85°C.Generation of acid may be prevented by conducting the reaction in the presence of ferrous iron and at acidities of 40 g/l or greater. Zinc and iron levels in Elura lead concentrate may be reduced by leaching with SO2/O2.

The Velvet gold orebody (153 Koz Au) is located near the Kanowna Belle gold deposit in the Boorara Domain of the Kalgoorlie Terrane, a subdivision of the Archaean Eastern Goldfields Superterrane (Swager et al, 1990). Gold mineralisation at Velvet is hosted within an intrusion of intermediate composition that broadly follows a sub vertical hanging wall splay of the Fitzroy Shear Zone.Velvet was discovered in 2003 during an underground exploration drilling program targeting potential strike extensions to the Kanowna Belle deposit. Diamond drill hole KDU1595 returned a downhole intercept of 36 m grading 4.6 ppm Au approximately 500 m west of the deposit and at a vertical depth of 700 m below surface in the immediate hanging wall of the primary Kanowna Belle host structure, the Fitzroy Shear Zone. Subsequent drilling completed following the initial discovery, from both surface and underground collar positions, failed to replicate this result.In 2014, KDU1595 was resurveyed gyroscopically and the mineralised intercept correctly located. Additional drilling was undertaken to follow-up the repositioned discovery hole. Challenges included poor drilling angles through the Fitzroy Shear Zone, excessive deviation during drilling and the unknown geometry of the target. Navigational drilling helped to successfully penetrate the Fitzroy Shear Zone and in April 2015, drill hole KDU3234 returned a significant downhole intercept of 45 m grading 5.6 ppm Au.Additional drilling success resulted in a decision to develop a 600 m drive to serve as a dual-purpose access for further exploration and mining. This was a potential risk considering that the orebody geometry was unknown and all significant drilling results were clustered within a 50 m × 50 m panel. Development commenced in June 2015 and the first ore cut taken in April 2016. Geological mapping and structural interpretation, together with multi-element and spectral analysis of drill samples has enabled several other target areas to be identified for exploration. The Velvet mining area is critical to continued production at Kanowna Belle. A new minerals initiative to increase the level of understanding of New Zealand's mineral resources and to promote the development of minerals began earlier in the year in a partnership pilot-project between Crown Minerals and the Institute for Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS). The project aims to gather a set of comprehensive geoscientific data and build a series of digital GIS packages to highlight New Zealand's mineral prospectivity. The pilot study was carried out at a regional scale, and is focussed on mesothermal gold mineralisation in the South Island. A significant amount of geological data and information was sourced from open file technical reports held by Crown Minerals and from various databases held by GNS and has now been compiled into a single GIS dataset, which will soon be made freely available to interested parties. In addition to this comprehensive data compilation, prospectivity modelling using Weights of Evidence techniques was undertaken to highlight those areas likely to contain ore deposits. It is clear from this study that the South Island of New Zealand remains highly prospective for mesothermal gold mineralisation. Many of the highly prospective areas, which also contain historic mine workings, remain open for exploration. The study not only highlights these areas, but also other areas where the potential for similar mineralisation exists, in all likelihood with no surface expression. The study has also highlighted the value of many of the open-file technical reports held by Crown Minerals and the need to carry out additional studies using this and other available data at a more detailed level, possibly as the basis for a web-based minerals information system.

In washability, the objective is to establish the set of maximum possible separation performance criteria for a given mineral feed. The method of choice for this has been the conventional sink–?float analysis. Using traditional sink–float method it is not possible to sample and automatically measure. This fact, as well as time, cost and safety aspects, as well as required and manageable sample size of the sink–float method have prompted the search for a new approach for establishing separation performance criteria. This is especially important as performance levels of separator plants can be maximised if reliable information based on an analysis of washability in conjunction with particle size distribution, elemental constituency becomes available in time. The new method to establish washability and associated performance information utilises at least two measurement technologies concurrently: single energy X-ray transmission and image processing. For porous or very inhomogeneous materials the results can be refined further by using dual energy X-ray transmission and image processing.If used as a standard laboratory device the continuous build-up of the washability curve allows to evaluate the statistical significance of the sample size during measurement.The measuring method can even be improved if it is combined with an automatic sampling system that feeds a continuous and representative particle stream to the analyser. Then the value of the collected data increases considerably since the washability data are additionally available in time to be considered in the control of the process plant. The washability curve can be derived and is continuously updated based on the particles measured during the past time interval. Older curves and results are stored in a database and can be retrieved for later reference. This technology now enables automated sampling and integrated automated measurement, which was previously not possible.This incorporation of an automated washability monitor at a representative sample gives near real-time data that would impinge positively on the profitability of the plant operation. Two years ago I was sitting in a big lecture theatre at the School of Mines in Kalgoorlie at the annual New LeadersÆ Conference listening to a guy tell us all how much he loved his job, travelling the country ælegallyÆ blowing stuff up à and getting paid to do it. I would have paid to see and do the things he spoke of à now IÆm that guy. From finishing a mining engineering degree at the University of Ballarat, through the job hunt, to firing environmental blasts in Tassie and designing and implementing construction blasts in the middle of the Gold Coast. My name is Rohan Stevens and IÆm a blast-o-holic. While the æjob huntÆ we all embark on toward the end of our degrees is a stressful time, itÆs also very exciting in the current climate. There are a number of things I have learnt through both my hunt for the job that best suited me and working for the worldÆs largest explosives manufacturer. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The distribution of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits through time is episodic, involving relatively short time intervals of apparent high productivity and long intervals of low productivity. This distribution is principally related to the geodynamic evolution of the Earth. The vast majority of these deposits is associated with the assembly of supercontinents and form along convergent margins, generally in back-arc basins or rifted arcs. This contrasts with the distribution of black smoker deposits, which presently form along both convergent margins, particularly in the western Pacific, and divergent margins at mid-ocean ridges. However, the latter environment is rarely preserved deep into the geological past.There also appear to be systematic patterns in a number of other features of volcanic-hosted massive deposits through time. Deposits hosted by mafic-dominated successions are dominant in Archean to Proterozoic rocks, whereas deposits hosted by felsic-dominated successions are most common in Phanerozoic rocks. Geochemical characteristics of felsic rocks within the host successions and ore lead and sulfur isotope data of the ores have also changed with time. This suggests changes in the process of subduction and/or changes in the characteristics of the over-riding plate with time, consistent with isotopic and geologic evidence for greater reworking of pre-existing crust during the Phanerozoic.Other secular changes that are reflected in characteristics of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits include the redox state and salinity of coeval oceans. As an example, both the abundance of sulfate minerals and sulfur isotope patterns reflect the development of periods of anoxic conditions over time, with major intervals of anoxia reflected by a virtual lack or low abundance of sulfate minerals in volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits in the Mesoarchean to the Palaeoproterozoic, and shorter intervals since.CITATION:Huston, D L, Eglington, B, Pehrsson, S, Piercey, S and Doublier, M, 2015.
