HIGH-IRON cements have a number of advantages over cements carrying little or no iron. The presence of iron in, Portland cement aids in the manufacture of the cement and also imparts certain advantageous physical properties to the finished product. In manufacture, the presence of iron lowers the fuel consumption, increases the ease of proper burning, and lessens the destructive action of the charge on the kiln refractories. In the finished cement the presence of iron reduces the expansion and contraction, adds strength, adds increased resistance to freezing and thawing, and increases the resistance of the cement to sea or sulphate waters. During the past few years the construction of numerous dams through-out the Southeast by the Tennessee Valley Authority has stimulated the production of high-iron cements. At present a great number of specifica-tions call for an iron cement, and the industry is supplying this demand with a Portland cement carrying approximately 5 per cent iron oxide. Several manufacturers are now making practically all of their cement of this type and a number of others manufacture it as a special cement over short periods to meet demands from the Tennessee Valley Authority and other buyers. The recent increase in the use of iron in Portland cement has created a market for iron products that previously was nonexistent. The chief sources of supply for the cement manufacturers at present are iron sand, iron sinter and slag, and ocher. The Copperhill mining district, Ten-nessee, supplies both iron sinter and slag for use in cement. The Carters-ville district supplies iron sand, ocher, and some iron resulting from the magnetic separation of iron from barite. The advantages of these products vary according to the chemical properties of the raw materials and the methods of handling used by the different manufacturers. ROOF SUPPORT DEVELOPMENTS IN LONGWALL (1) European longwall mining technology developed towards its modern form in relatively deep mines. With increasing depth the stability of openings driven for ventilation, travel or transport becomes paramount in mine design considerations. As a result the number of roadways and entries, as well as their width must be a minimum. (1) Another important aspect of European mining is the high density of mineable seams, as opposed to the wide lateral extension of a single seam in the U. S. A. Multi-seam mining requires strict planning and near 100% extraction, since with increasing depth, the effect of remnant pillars can be devastating. As a result the face layout of a modern European longwall panel is based on single panel entries of moderate width and great height. The mode of extraction is generally a mixture of the advance and retreat system which is called a 2-system. It is obvious, therefore, that the supports developed for the entries and for the intersection areas are more complex than those in the U. S. A.

Environmental legislation, both existing and proposed, requires that mills, tailings dams, evaporation ponds, and related processing facilities be located, constructed, and operated within stringent guidelines. An early step in planning a new processing facility is performing a site selection study in which topographic, hydrologic, geotechnical, and environmental parameters are evaluated for several alternate sites. Once a site is selected, then an environmental report, including a description of the proposed action, alternatives, baseline surveys, and discussions of potential environmental impacts, mitigation measures and monitoring programs is required. The federal legislation, siting studies, and environmental studies (along with the implications of these as they affect design) are discussed. In addition, costs for performing these studies and implementing control of effluents are discussed.

The ultimate goal in rock mechanics is to make quantitative predictions of the response of rock to changes. Measured and calculated values of changes in displacements or temperatures in the rock for six different field experiments are compared using linear regression. When values of the mean compressive stresses are large compared with the values of the deviatorial stresses, linear elasticity, using values for Young's modulus from laboratory tests, provides a good predictive model. However, if the values of the mean compressive stresses are small compared with those of the deviatorial stresses the behavior and response of the rock, though systematic, is not linear. Linear heat conduction provides good predictions of changes in rock temperatures but thermal displacements are not predicted well by linear thermoelasticity.

THE possible oil territory of Alabama can be readily divided into two regions, the Paleozoic area of the north, and the Coastal Plain province of Cretaceous and younger formations lying to the south. This latter area has received much attention in the last few years and has been described by a number of writers.1 Although the possibilities of the Cretaceous series have been much emphasized by recent writers, the fact remains that the two or, possibly, three localities where oil or as have been found in, anything like paying quantities are confined o the area of Carboniferous rocks. Moreover, almost all of the oil seeps and a good percentage of the gas seeps are confined to this area .2 Topographically, as well as structurally, the Paleozoic area can be divided into three rather well defined provinces: (1) The broad, open Coosa Valley lying adjacent to the crystalline oldland, with comparatively little relief, except for occasional longitudinal ridges and rather intense folding; (2) the plateau region of horizontal or gently warped Pennsylvanian strata broken by occasional anticlinal valleys aligned northeast and southwest, outliers of the Coosa Valley proper, in which

The challenge to designers of bulk materials handling systems is to apply the existing technology in areas where it has not been used and to foster better, cheaper and safer job performance. The Dashaveyor Co., a subsidiary of The Bendix Corp., built and tested a pilot system at Copper Range's White Pine mine. Based upon this success, a prototype system development was begun in 1967 to test the concepts in a full-scale, realistic environment.

This chapter covers the normal problems encountered in the building of an ore concentrating facility. To produce such a facility In today's environment requires correlation by the engineers involved of geologic data, mine planning, scheduling, future planning, water resources, power, land availability, testing, design, start-up and environmental considerations. Of course, the program scheduling and character of the ore will determine the weight given to the above considerations in the final design and construction of the plant.

HEALTH and safety in the mining and allied industries of the United States have unquestionably been progressing, particularly during the past three or four years, even though the progress has been anything but great in some branches of these industries. Statistical data to support this statement are readily available as to safety, but similar health data are unfortunately not available. In coal mining the rate of occurrence of fatal accidents per million tons of coal produced for the ten-year period 1911.20 inclusive was 4.27; this rate was 3.84 in 1930, .3.31 in 1931, 3.36 in 1932, and 2.69 (tentative) in 1933. In metal mining, the-rate of occurrence of fatal and- non-fatal injuries per .thousand 300-day workers (calculated) was 224.36 for- the same ten-year period. This fell slowly until after 1929 when it was 203.14, dropping to 170.78 in 1930, to 142.09 in 1931, to 138.46 in 1932, and to 155.13 in 1933. Here, again,-the real progress began in 1931 though the rate in 1930 was not particularly bad. Gold is an important byproduct and, locally, coproduct of porphyry copper deposits, and possesses potential for discovery as the major metal in porphyry deposits in either island arcs or Cordilleran belts. Tungsten and tin occur as major components of several potentially bulk-minable porphyry deposits, as well as being byproducts from the Climax porphyry molybdenum deposit. Whereas porphyry tin systems are localized in Cordilleran back-arc settings, their tungsten counterparts appear to span a range of geotectonic settings, from Cordilleran principal arcs through back arcs to rifts. Although silver is a common byproduct of porphyry cop- per deposits, it tends to be preferentially concentrated with lead and zinc on the fringes of all types of porphyry deposits and/or as late-stage superpositions; the latter situation could be of some interest in the higher parts of porphyry systems. As byproducts, rhenium, uranium, platinoids, and magnetite are exploited occasionally, and rutile and the rare metals, such as tantalum and niobium, merit consideration.

General prosperity marked the industrial mineral industries of the U.S. and Canada in 1962. For most commodities, production and sales exceeded 1961 figures, and for several commodities, all-time production peaks were reached. Many millions of dollars were spent on exploration for and development of industrial mineral deposits, construction of new plant facilities, and expansion and modernization of existing plants. This generally satisfactory state is attributable mostly to a continuing high rate of building and heavy construction. However, for large segments of the industrial mineral field, 1962 was a year of increasingly severe competition and of problems, either existing or potential, of overproduction and overcapacity. Such problems are of particular concern to the asbestos, cement, potash and sulfur industries. As in years past, the trend continued toward larger-scale operations to permit lower production costs per unit of material mined, toward more stringent quality controls and toward marketing methods that provide greater efficiency and customer convenience.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been investigating certain problems relating to the blast furnace. In the course of these investigations it was desirable to measure, with the optical pyrometer, the temperatures occurring in the hearth of the furnace. Since no systematic measurements of these temperatures have been published a statement of the results may be of interest. The data given in this paper were obtained it thirty-two blast furnaces operated by seventeen companies; twenty of these furnaces were making iron, eight ferromanganese, and five spiegeleisen. The collection of this information was made possible by the cooperation of the American Manganese Co., Bethlehem Steel Corpn., Brier Hill Steel Co., Buffalo Union Furnace Co., Clinton Iron & Steel Co., Donner Steel Co., John B. Guernsey & Co., Jones & Laughlin Steel Co., E. E. HE application of geology to problems arising A in coal mining engineering and coal preparation has, in general, been somewhat remote, or the geological problems have involved such simple forms of geological knowledge that the attention of specialists in this field has not been commonly thought necessary. Furthermore, the geology of coal beds and coal mining has received but scant attention in our educational system, even in mining education; so that coal mining engineers have become somewhat conditioned against geological thinking. Geologists, on the other hand, have commonly failed to realize that there are geological aspects to coal mining and coal preparation problems. A further reason why geology receives so little consideration in coal mining undertakings in this country lies in the fact that our coal supplies are, or have been thought to be, almost unlimited, have been easily accessible, and very cheaply mined. Conditions have been changing within recent years. Failures can be less easily endured. Great inroads have been made on our bonanza deposits of easily mined coal and the increasing cost of coal and the increasing difficulty of finding it in easily accessible and large quantities places greater and greater importance on accurate information and good technique in exploration. It seems probable, therefore, that the opinions and aid of geologists will be more commonly sought than in the past in the exploration for coal and in the development and operation of coal mines, and analyses of mining conditions, preparation, and utilization.

ABOUT three years ago at a coal mining institute meeting, it was predicted that mechanical load-ing underground would progress faster than either the electric coal-cutting machines or electric loco-motives had in previous years. This prediction has proved correct so far. In 1925 over 6,000,000 tons of,coal was loaded mechanically underground in the United States and it is estimated that the 1926 tonnage will reach 10,000,000. The use of electric mining machines and locomotives .has prepared the way for quick results. Most coal mines are now equipped with electric power and have a competent staff who understands its use. In spite of this advantage the introduction of the loading machines brings many new problems. Im-proved and concentrated transportation; doing the drilling, shooting, tracklaying and face timbering with company men instead of the former tonnage men; doing the work on the new basis in an economical and efficient manner; altering or modifying mining systems where necessary to further improve the work and reduce oper-ating costs; improving the percentage of lump coal and reducing the slack content where desirable; improving the cleaning of the coal and obtaining a more dependable .and uniform output are a few of the problems that must be met. Each of the different types of loaders now on the market has its particular advantages and disadvantages for a given mining condition. Even with the same mining conditions one type will work well under one ;system of handling, whereas another may favor another system or mining method.

APPALLING as has been the loss of life in the last 51 months, there is one slight compensation : no longer will there be in the world a cripple, in the old meaning of the term. Men handicapped by wounds or disease, there will be, unfortunately, and in numbers beyond what the world has known since the wars of Napoleon; but neither they nor the industries from which they were called off to war will be "crippled" in the sense in which both would have been had mankind not learned the lesson of conservation and come to understand that the most important field for such conservation is not in the forests and' the mines but among men and women. From the beginning of the Great War, France, Great Britain, Belgium, and most of the other Allies have studied the problem of restoring the soldiers and sailors injured through war to physical and economic efficiency; and from their experiences, especially from that of Canada, the United States has learned much. Consequently, our task of preparing for the return of our disabled men has been easier and, in some ways, more comprehensive than theirs. Complex as are the details of the machinery which the United States has set in motion to take care of the men injured by wounds or disease, the plan itself is simple. Taught by European experience, the Surgeon-General of the Army and the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery of the Navy have provided, on both sides of the Atlantic, every known surgical and medical facility for restoring the injured or diseased man to a physical condition as nearly normal as possible. While in the hospital in France or England, on the transport coming to America, and in the hospital here, the disabled man is incited in every way to believe in his future efficiency, to want to be a normal worker, to desire to retake his place in that society of workers from which he went, temporarily, to do the greater work of preserving civilization. Furthermore, since purposeful occupation is now regarded as an essential form of, treatment with most men in the hospital, especially in the convalescing stage, many of these men will have been actually started on the road to earning before they are discharged from the army surgeon's care.

Minas de Matahambre, a copper mine located 100 miles southwest of Havana, Cuba, has produced 10 million tons of copper ore since it was first opened up in 1913. During the mid-1950's the mine was producing approximately 1000 tpd and had attained a depth of 3600 ft. As shown in Fig. 1, the property contains three shafts: the No. 1 shaft, 2100 ft deep and located 2000 ft south of the No. 2 shaft, provided service to the 2100 level; the vertical 3600-ft No. 2 shaft handled all production to the 3400 level; the No. 3 shaft on the northeasterly fringe of the mining area was in a semi-active status.

THERE are three matters related to ore-hunting which I wish especially to discuss here: first, the paucity of the special writings applying to it; second, the failure of scientists to concern them-selves importantly with it; and, third, resting on these conditions, certain possible activities for economic geologists. First, as to the writings. Geological papers. are being produced in the United States alone at the rate of 10 to 12 shelf-feet per year.1 But papers specifically for the ore-hunter would go in a slim, annual pamphlet; all that have ever been written would go in a briefcase. The art of technical ore-hunting-geology conceived as a guide to ore-has only a scant literature.

When I first went to Arizona in 1925, mining was primarily an underground job. Ajo, Sacramento Hill in Bisbee and Jerome were the only open pit operations in the state. Thousands of men, however, were employed in underground mining at Morenci, Miami, Inspiration, Globe, Ray, Bisbee, and Superior. The grade of ore in the larger operations was about 1-1/2% copper while a few of the smaller ones mined ore better than 2% Cu. In Utah, the Bingham pit was doing well and growing; in Montana, the vein mines of Butte still yielded ore running 6% Cu.

General Aurelio Blanquet,* the best known of living Mexican soldiers, formerly the trusted friend of Porfirio Diaz and organizer of the old Federal Guard of Mexico City, who as a sergeant commanded the squad that executed sentence on Emperor Maximilian, and. more recently was Minister of War in the Cabinet of Victoriano Huerta, landed in Mexico early in April and joined the forces of Felix Diaz. His landing in the state of Vera Cruz, it was stated, was for the definite purpose of aiding the movement now under way to overthrow Venustiano Carranza and to place in power a government that will be "pro-Ally" in its sympathies and will promulgate and enforce laws that will guarantee the rights of life and property in Mexico. The New York Tinges says of the revolution editorially: "Whatever may be the success of General Aurelio Blanquet's attempt to overthrow the Carranza Government in Mexico, admiration cannot be withheld from the General's publicity manager. No enterprise awning at the overthrow of a Government ever had more favorable and widespread advertising. Felix Diaz, whom Blanquet is going to reinforce, supersede, or overthrow, as the case may be-Mexican precedent in these matters offers opportunity for considerable speculation-has been conducting his revolution, at the old stand for some time, but without much success. But, says General Blanquet's representative, the landing of Blanquet will send a thrill to the heart of every true republican.' Meanwhile a biographical booklet is published, adorned with photo¬graphs illustrating the General's record, including such varied matters as the General in favor, receiving a decoration from Victoriano Huerta, and the General in exile, feeding the birds in Central Park."
