Introduction SINCE about 70 per cent. of the total cost of mining is due to underground work which is out of sight, it is essential that expenditures should be made here to the best advantage. A great many mistakes have been made which were expensive, but perhaps these have not even been detected by mine owners. In the future these may be minimized to some extent, especially if there is cooperative effort on the part of each employee. I have been interested in this subject for some years and have tried to deduce principles and methods. These have proved highly advantageous and may also be of help to others. Some corporations, like the United States Steel, and the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., have done a great deal in this field by having stated meetings of their organizations, with the view to interchanging ideas among their men and educating them along the lines of concerted effort. Since no man knows all about the various branches of mining, it is advisable that frequent meetings of the operating department be held for the interchange of ideas and that all members of the organization have an opportunity to express themselves on the various subjects. It has often been found that in discussions between heads of departments, foremen and bosses, many valuable suggestions may be obtained which promote the best interests of the company. The method regarded as the most conducive to cooperative effort, and pursued by the organization, is to analyze and develope the different phases of various mining subjects at regular meetings.

MINING taxation is a subject which bears definitely upon-the welfare of the mining indus-try. Every government must have a revenue but that revenue should be raised in such a way as to hamper as little as possible legitimate enterprise or industry. A mining tax should be fair, and one which appeals to the natural sense of justice. Our present system is a tax on net- profits after all expenses are met. On profits in excess of $10,000 the Mining Tax Act takes three per cent., one-half of which goes to the Govern-ment and one-half to the municipality in which the mines are situated, to meet local needs for roads, schools, etc. On profits from one to five million dollars", the tax is five per cent.; over five million, six per cent., and so on. The first $10,000 profit is exempt. The result is that if a mine is worked at a loss, it pays no tax at all; if it makes a small profit, it pays a small tax; if profits are large, the tax increases accordingly. It is difficult to imagine a fairer or less onerous method of taxation, or one better adapted to meet fluctuating conditions from year to year as profits rise or fall. A just and fair tax should be levied on profits, never on capital. There is, one branch of the mining industry upon which is levied a higher tax than upon other branches, namely, the nickel industry. I see no good reason why any branch of the mining industry should be discrim-inated against on a profits tax basis. A mining tax should not discourage development. The present tax meets this requirement. In the early years of a mine, when it is all outgo and no income, the mine pays no tax. Not until it reaches a productive and. profitable stage does the tax take effect, and then the mine can afford to pay it. Further, a tax on profits does not operate against the opening up of low-grade deposits, or those in which the chance of success is to a certain extent speculative.

Annual pumpage of ground water from the alluvial valleys of California now is about 10 million acre-feet. This heavy pumpage has created problems of over-draft and ocean-water encroachment in many valleys. Steps are being taken to protect and increase the available supply but much additional basic study is needed.

John D. Price (Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp., Pueblo, Colo)—The paper on the coal fields of the Oaxaca district as prepared by engineers Toron and Cortes-Obregon of the staff of the Bank of Mexico bears witness to the thorough and careful way in which the men associated with this organization perform their work. There is little to be added to their paper in way of discussion other than to confirm and amplify some of their statements. Since the only extensive and well-developed field of coking coal lies in the northeastern section of the country adjacent to Sabinas in the state of Coahuila, it follows that blast furnace plants would be located in that same region. Two such plants are now operating at Monterrey and Monclova, using coke produced at the Sabinas district mines. But the nearer of these two plants is 600 miles from Mexico City and even farther from the center of population. Transportation of products from these mills to the market area is therefore expensive, both because of the distance and the difficulty of the terrain over which it must be carried. The development of an integrated steel industry closer to the center of population has therefore long been a goal toward which the Mexican technicians have been striving. While the presence of coal of some grade has been reported in many of the states, and many ideas have been advanced regarding its possible uses in iron and steel production, deposits of anthracite in Sonora and the various coals of the Oaxaca district as reported on in this paper are the only ones that have been explored in a serious manner. The coking coal from the Mix-tepec zone appears to offer promise of producing a coke which could be used in a standard blast furnace. Several problems are indicated, however: 1—The ash in the coal is high as mined, but indications are that it can be washed to an ash content of 15 pct with a recovery of 70 pct of washed coal. 2—Such washing would increase the volatile content from 17.4 pct to about 20 pct, and in a byproduct oven this should give a coke yield of close to 80 pct with an ash content of coke under 20 pct. 3—A free swelling index of 5 appears low for a good coking coal, and below that of the coals from the Sabinas district, which show between 6 and 9. But washing of the coal should result in an improvement in this regard; in the United States coals from Utah with an index even lower than 5 have made a usable coke. 4—A coal with volatile as low as 17.4 in raw coal and 20 in washed coal would come close to being classed as a low-volatile rather than medium-volatile coal, and low-volatile coals are notorious for their high expansion properties. Several plants in the United States are making coke from straight medium-volatile coal of 26 to 28 volatile content, and one at Rosita,, Mexico, from coal of 25 volatile. But no plants to my knowledge are using coal as low as 20 volatile. Since the Rosita coal appears to be a borderline coal from the angle of its expansion properties the coking of one of the straight lower volatile must be approached with caution. 5—There are few coals possessing any degree of coking properties which cannot be used in coke production by careful attention to its preparation and blending. The fact that coals of other types are available in this same region make improvement through blending very possible. 6—There are other workable methods of reducing iron ore other than the conventional coke-blast-furnace method. These will not be discussed here but it is known that their use has been considered. The technicians of not only Mexico but also of the other Latin American countries are keenly aware of their natural resources and their national needs. This paper emphasizes the fact that the Mexican technicians are working on their problem and attempting to speed the day of self-sufficiency for their country. Salvatore Cortes-Obregon (author's reply)—I wish to thank Mr. Price for his kind remarks. The Mixtepec coal as shown in Table II has 30 pct ash and a free swelling index of 5, but when the same coal is washed to 15 pct ash it has a free swelling index of 8 to 9 and the volatiles increased from 17.4 to 20.7 pct. A satisfactory coke has been produced from blends made in the Mexican laboratory using at least 40 pct of the Mixtepec coking coals with the other Oaxaca non-coking coals. Koppers in Germany report good coke obtained from the Oaxaca coal with a blend of 80 pct Mixtepec coal. Consideration is being given the possibility of using methods other than the conventional blast furnace for the reduction of iron ore near the Oaxaca area; electric furnaces appear promising. The non-coking coals could be used to produce cheap electric energy and the coking coals to make metallurgical coke.

Discussion of the paper of FRANK ALFRED FAHRENWALD, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 109, January, 1916, pp. 103 to 149. F. A. FAHRENWALD, Cleveland, Ohio (communication to the Secretary*).-Since the publication of my paper in the January Bulletin, (which was largely a metallographic treatise), I have been questioned regarding two points referred to therein. One of these is that which deals with the application I have made, p. 119, of the equation for melting pressures which correspond with different working temperatures. The other refers to the statement, p. 137, that "Prolonged heating at relatively low temperatures gave fewer and larger crystals and crystals of different sizes, while a flashing at higher temperatures gave a very fine and uniform crystalline structure, which was much' to be preferred." Especial emphasis was not placed upon either of these two factors, for each seemed perfectly logical and obvious. As they do not seem to be self-explanatory, I will supplement with those portions of my notes which were purposely omitted from the manuscript submitted for publication. A few practical illustrations may serve as evidence in support of the first of these, but it must be understood that in this work the "amorphous theory" is considered as being sound, and that it is assumed that metals allow of distortion, without fracture, by virtue of the formation of slip surfaces, accompanied by the transformation of crystalline material to the, amorphous phase. Effect of Pressure.-In all forging, rolling, and drawing operations, it is known that specimens of small cross-section may be worked at a lower temperature than can be used for the same material in much greater mass and sectional area. In -the larger pieces the maximum pressure is brought to bear upon the material near the surface, so that the interior is not subjected to great pressure, but to, a stress more nearly tensile, or shearing, so only the surface is subjected to the critical melting pressure. In the case of wires which draw hollow, the center is subjected to practically a tensile stress which breaks it, while the surface skin draws perfectly, due to the enormous "flowing" pressure exerted upon it by the surface of the draw-plate.

In my report for the year 1922, I drew attention to the falling off in membership of the Institute due to the depressed condition of the mining industry in several lines and the inability of many of our members to find profitable employment in mining or its associated branches. A number who were unemployed during 1922 established connections during 1923, but a still greater number have been forced to resign or drop their membership during 1923 Fortunately, the number dropped is not so great as in the previous year. The Employment Service conducted by, the four Founder Societies bears witness to the trend in business For the young men just out of college, there are plenty of opportunities at small salaries, there are plenty of opportunities for them as laborers; but for the mature members, those of experience, there are few calls During the last eighteen months, our Employment Service has been able to place only six of our members out of every hundred engineers for whom it has found work. Another loss which this Society has suffered, but which is not felt so keenly by our sister societies, is in its foreign members. The A. I M. E. has always had a large foreign membership, but of recent years exchange has been so heavily against many European and South American coun¬tries that a large number of members residing abroad have been compelled to relinquish their membership Almost invariably these members express keen regret because of the necessity that confronts them, and almost invariably the writers express hope that present conditions will not last long and that they will soon be able to ask for reinstatement. Diamond drilling has become a very important factor in mining. It is the most satisfactory method of obtaining proof of the existence of an orebody and of determining the character and extent of the body in measures where a core can be made. Large investments are based on the information obtained. The method of development, the mine and reduction plants, and subsidiary essentials established are often without other information. The Mond Nickel Co. has drilled about 50,000 ft. (15,240 m.) per yr. for sevéral years and has given considerable study to the question of improving the methods and of overcoming the limitations of this means of securing information. One of the main limitations of the diamond drill has been its inability to drill a straight hole. To depths of 1000 ft. (304 m.) the deflection is often not large but all holes tend to curve and take somewhat erratic courses. A hole running at a small angle to a fissure plane tends to run along the fissure. If the hole is at a large angle, the tendency is to penetrate the fissure plane at right angles. The face of the bit having one side in solid formation beyond the fissure, the other in the selvage of the fissure, tends to turn, the rods curving to the extent of their clearance in the hole. Usually rock measures have somewhat regular fissuring or strata and holes take somewhat similar courses, usually at right angles to the fissuring or strata. Excessive pressure or short or worn core barrels increase curvature. Slow speeds, correct feeds, sharp bits, and core barrels the full size of the bit, tend to decrease curvature but do not prevent it Curvature once started increases rapidly. The disappointments from crooked holes have been numerous. Discoveries have later been found to be on the properties of others. One Canadian company had a hole, supposedly discovering ore 300 ft. (91 m.) from old workings, unexpectedly turn in 8 ft. (2.4 m.) of wooden core from a timber in the old workings. ThE exact type of fluid flow which occurs in a solidifying ingot is important in determining subsequent grain structure. This has been shown in studies of natural Convection" and of forced stirring or other disturbances of the melt."16 We shall explicitly argue that a complement to the existing natural flow in an ingot should be more effective than other types of flow in promoting the columnar-to-equiaxed transition. The ultimate effects of fluid flow upon structure is one of the topics of solidification that we have investigated in the alloy system Pb-Sb, under conditions simulating casting. In Fig. 1, the essential features of a bidirectional growth apparatus are shown; horizontal freezing from water-cooled faces within a low-thermal-conductivity lavite boat is a reasonable simulation of an ingot section. Details such as the furnace and thermocouples are omitted in order to show the location of four permanent. magnets, each with a pole separation of 21 in. providing a central field of about 1000 Gauss. When coupled with a dc current imposed through appropriate connections made at the cooled faces, a flow of fluid is produced as shown schematically. This technique described by Pfann and ~orsi" is ideal for our purpose since the flow indicated is the same as that we observe to occur naturally in this system. Components of 99.999 pct purity were used for study and all due precautions were taken in alloy preparation to avoid contaminants. Sections of the specimens were taken to ensure results representative of the interior as well as the surface of specimens. All proportions of equiaxed and columnar regions were measured by tracing the etched grain structures onto graph paper and simply counting squares. Four alloys were examined at superheats of 40" * 5°C and 100" * 9°C. Preliminary tests had shown that no appreciable enhancement of structure was obtained with magnetic field alone, so that this condition is not reported; it should nevertheless be noted that other configurations of magnetic field will reduce convection and thus enhance columnar growth.'8 For the tests reported the magnetic field was applied to a specimen by bringing the four preassembled magnets to a position 2 mm from an outer tube immediately after the ingot was poured. The dc current of 30 amps passed through the sample throughout the entire solidification cycle, resulting in a power dissipation of 9 w per sq cm of interface. This may be compared to the evolution of latent heat of approximately 18 w per sq cm. Table I contains the results of this experiment in terms of the total area ratio, equiaxed/columnar grains, as a function of the field interactions, solute concentrations, and superheats employed. The total structure of the ingot is seen to be most influenced when both the field and current are applied simultaneously; when current acts separately, little effect may be noted in spite of the heat supplied. In addition, the change in structure from the no field-no current case to the field-current condition is more pronounced at the higher superheat, and the higher the concentration of antimony. An example of the grain refinement, as well as the increased equiaxed zone, is shown in Fig. 2. It is now important to prove that there is indeed an increase in fluid flow due to the presence of the field-current interaction; this is done by temperature measurements in the liquid metal. The stages in the development of cells in the Sn-Cd eutectic have been studied by unidirectionally solidifying specimens under known conditions of growth rate, temperature gradient, and impurity concentration. By means of a quenching technique, the shape of the solid-liquid interface during solidification could be observed. Cells are shown to develop from defects or depressions which exist on the solid-liquid interface of even a pure eutectic. Th,e container wall, grain boundaries , and fault lines in the micro structure play an important role in cell development. A two-phase eutectic dendrite found at high impurity concentrations is described. L HE cellular or colony structure formed during eutectic solidification caused much confusion among early workers in their attempts to classify eutectic structure, and a major advance in our understanding of eutectic solidification was made when the colony structure was identified with a cellular interface caused by the presence of impurity elements.1'2 To date, however, no detailed investigation of the stages in cell development in eutectics has appeared, and little work has been done on the cell morphology. The present paper presents the results of such an investigation. EXPERIMENTAL The Sn-Cd eutectic was used in this investigation with lead as the impurity element to promote cell formation. Materials of 99.999 pct purity were zone-refined to an approximate purity of 99.9999 pct. Alloys as close as possible to the eutectic composition, 67.75 wt pct Sn, were prepared using zone-refined tin and cadmium. The alloys were then zone-melted to the exact eutectic composition, as described by Yue and Clark,3 using a total of twenty to twenty-five passes on each eutectic bar. Only those portions of the bars which contained no primary phases were used in subsequent experiments. Master ternary alloys were prepared by melting together the required amounts of lead and the Sn-Cd eutectic in a sealed Pyrex tube under argon, and these alloys were then diluted with pure Sn-Cd eutectic as required. Unidirectional solidification was conducted vertically upward using the two-element resistance furnace shown schematically in Fig. 1. With this apparatus, it was possible to obtain a range of growth rates and temperature gradients so that the cell structure could be studied under different growth conditions. Growth rates in the range of 0.4 to 9.1 cm per hr and temperature gradients from 2.25° to 1475°C per cm were used. To ensure steady-state solidification, power to the furnace was stabilized, and the entire apparatus was enclosed in a large box in which the temperature was controlled to within ± 0.2°C. The apparatus was arranged so that the specimen could be quenched in situ during solidification by pouring a large quantity of water down the central vycor tube. Excellent delineation of the solid-liquid interface at the time of the quench was obtained because of the structural changes accompanying the rapid solidification of the remaining liquid. The quenching rate was always extremely rapid as no evidence of a transition in the lamellar spacing at the interface was ever observed. The alloys to be solidified were contained in degassed, high-purity graphite tubes, 1 cm OD and 0.6 cm ID. The specimens were about 18 cm in length. After the alloy had been cast into the tubes, three 0.8-mm holes were drilled in the tube to the center of the specimen. One hole was placed 1 cm from the bottom of the ingot, and the other holes were placed at 8 and 9 cm, respectively, from the base of the ingot. Thirty-four-gage chromel-alumel thermocouples were sealed in the holes. The lower thermocouple was used to position the solid-liquid interface at the start of each experiment,

The effects of changes in short-range order on some thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of the silver-rich Ag-Mg solid solutions have been investigated. The heats of formation at 273°K of several alloys after two different thermal treatments were measured by liquid metal solution calorimetry. Their electrical resistivities were measured at temperatures ranging from 4° to 773°k. Tensile tests and microhard-ness measurements were carried out at room temperature. An effective short-range order parameter and an effective interaction energy are defined. The measured changes in the properties are interpreted in terms of these quantities. The short-range order parameter is evaluated separately from calorimetric and X-ray data; the results are in fair agreement. Increasing short-range order lowers the resistivity of- the silver-rich Ag-Mg alloys but does not measurably affect the temperature dependence of the resistivity. Short-range order increases the yield stress of these alloys but does not affect the ultimate tensile stress. Changes in the effective short-range order parameter independently obtained from measured changes in the heat of formation, resistivity, and yield stress are in fair agreement. THE thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of solid solutions have been investigated as functions of composition in many alloy systems, but the effects of configurational variables, such as short-range or long-range order, on these properties have received much less attention. The silver-rich terminal solid solutions in the system Ag-Mg are well-suited for the investigation of the effects of order. The composition of these solid solutions may be varied over a range extending to about 27 at. pct Mg.1 Appreciable short-range ordering is likely to take place in these solid solutions; the degree of short-range order can be varied by suitable thermal treatments. In the alloy Ag3Mg long-range ordering is possible.2 This paper is primarily concerned with the effects of short-range order on some thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of the silver-rich Ag-Mg solid solutions.-The long-range ordering transition is the subject of a concurrent paper.3 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES 1.1) Preparation of Specimens. Ag-Mg alloys containing up to 26.4 at. pct Mg were prepared by melting 99.99 pct pure Ag (obtained from Baker Chemical Co.) and 99.99 pct pure Mg (obtained from Eastman Chemi- cal Co. or Johnson Mathey & Co.) in graphite crucibles under molten potassium chloride. The solidified ingots were homogenized at 823°K for 10 days in evacuated Vycor capsules. A surface layer 6 in. thick was then removed by machining. The ingots were swaged into rods (2.5 mm diam) which were drawn into wires (1.0 mm diam). The wire specimens were annealed at 773°K for 24 hr in vacuum and either quenched into iced brine or cooled to room temperature over a period of 15 days. The average grain diameter (obtained from the linear intercepts) was about 0.1 mm. 1.2) Calorimetry. The heats of formation of the alloys were measured in a tin solution calorimeter as the difference in the heat effects of alternate additions of samples of an alloy and the mechanical mixture of its component elements. The additions were made from 273°K to the bath at about 623°K. The heat effect on addition of the alloys was approximately 5.5 kcal per g-atom. The procedure and the method of calculation have been described.4 1.3) X-Ray Diffraction. Short-range order parameters of two alloys were calculated from diffuse scattering intensities,' obtained with briquettes made from powdered specimens. A GE-XRD 5 diffractometer with filtered copper radiation was used. The absolute intensities were based on calibrations with paraffin. 1.4) Resistivity Measurements. The electrical resistivities were measured by a potentiometric method in which the potential drop across the specimen was compared with that across a standard resistance. For measurements below room temperature, the specimens were immersed in liquid helium (4°K), liquid nitrogen (78°K), dry ice and trichloroethylene (195°K), or ice and water (273°K). Measurements above room temperature were made on specimens held in a furnace under helium or in vacuum. The resistivity measurements were reproducible to ±0.5 pct or less. 1.5) Mechanical Tests. Tensile tests were carried out at room temperature with a Tinius-Olsen XY elec-tromatic Universal testing machine. Wire specimens (nominal gage length 1 in.) were used. The strain was measured with an extensometer, which had a sensitivity of 4 x 10-5; the strain rate was 10-3 min-1. Microhard-ness measurements were made with a square-pyramid indenter and a 100-g load.11 2) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION All measurements were made on two parallel sets of specimens, one quenched and the other slowly cooled from 773°K. The reported values are the averages of at least three measurements. In the range of magnesium concentration substantially below that of the composition Ag3Mg, quenched alloys have less short-range order than slowly cooled alloys. As the magnesium concentration approaches that of Ag3Mg, slow cooling develops long-range order. Quenching sup-

Single crystals of aluminum, brass, and copper oriented for (100) and (110) slip were extended at 25°, 400°, and 600°C in simple shear. Aluminum specimens oriented for nonoctahedral slip began to shear at a higher critical resolved shear stress than specimens oriented for octahedral slip. Parabolic stress-strain curves were obtained from zero strain. The initial rate of parabolic hardening was lower for specimens sheared on the (100) plane in a close-packed direction <110>, than for specimens sheared in a nonclose-packed direction <100>. metallographic evidence, however, showed that all slip traces could be explained in terms of (111) <100> slip. All attempts to cause nonoctahedral slip in copper and 70-30 a-brass single crystals were unsuccessful. Instead of shearing, the crystals bent, allowing {111} type planes to come into action. NONOCTAHEDRAL slip in aluminum has been reported under three different conditions: first, as the main mode of slip in tension experiments at elevated temperatures;&apos;-&apos; second, as the main mode of slip in direct shear experiments at room temperat~re; and third, as a minor mode of deformation, i.e., as cross-slip, in tension, shear, and bicrystal experiments at room and elevated temperatures."-l2 However, as far as the author knows, nonoctahedral slip has not been reported in either copper or 70-30 a-brass. The present study was undertaken to determine whether nonoctahedral slip could be obtained in aluminum, brass, or copper at room or elevated temperatures when the shear stress was approximately constant over the cross-section, a maximum at the center, or a maximum at the surface. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A detailed description of the crystal preparation and shearing apparatus has been given previo~sly. Cylindrical crystals 1/2 in. in diam and 8 in. long were grown from the melt in a temperature-gradient furnace. The aluminum contained 0.001 pct Zn, 0.001 pct S, and 0.001 pct Fe; the 70-30 brass contained 0.015 pct Pb, 0.001 pct Fe, 0.01 pct Ni, 0.02 pct Sn, and 0.005 pct Se; the copper was certified OFHC of 99.98 pct purity. All samples were electropolished prior to testing. The shear apparatus was a modified Bausch type. The strain sensitivity was 4 x lob4 Load was applied by clamping the rods attached to the shear plates in an Instron tensile machine. The rate of loading was 0.02 in. per min. In all cases a 1/8-in. gage length was used. For the tests performed at 400° and 600°C the shear plates, collars, and rods were made of stainless steel. These elevated-temperature tests were performed in an argon atmosphere. A) Aluminum at Room Temperature. Values of a and ß for the various slip planes and slip directions investigated are shown in Table I where a is the complement of the angle between the specimen axis and the slip direction, and ß is the angle between the specimen axis and the normal to the shear plane. The shear stress is a function of a (assuming ß - 0);10 when a is less than 27 deg, the shear stress on the slip plane for which the specimen is oriented has a maximum at the center of the crystal; at a = 27 deg the shear stress is constant across the slip plane; for a greater than 27 deg the shear stress is a minimum at the center. Fig. 1 shows the stress-strain curves for specimens cut from crystals 1, 2, and 5, which were sheared on the (010) plane in the [loll direction at room temperature. THE treatment of slime is of special interest to those engaged in cyaniding gold- and silver-ores. The usual practice is to make as small a percentage of slime as possible. In many instances the slime is given no treatment, but is impounded in dams in the hope that the future will develop some method of economically treating this product. The filter-press was the first step upward from ordinary decantation, but, on account of heavy labor-charge and high cost, its use has been limited to high-grade material. The slime at the Combination mill at Goldfield averages perhaps $20 per ton, and although the values are quickly dissolved the filter-press installation was not entirely satisfactory, resulting in the erection of the canvas-cell filter, developed by Chas. Butters and his staff. This filter is a great improvement over the filter-press, and the following description of it will be of interest to those engaged in treating slime produced in crushing ores, especially in view of the fact that, by the use of this filter, slime can be treated at a lesser cost and with a higher percentage of gold- or silver-extraction than in the ordinary treatment of sand; and, moreover, the initial outlay for an all-sliming plant is less than that for the ordinary sand- and slime-plant. The economy of construction of the Butters filter-plant is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which illustrate the 20-frame filter of 40 tons capacity, now being installed by the Nevada Goldfield Reduction Co. In this construction the slime-pump is so connected that it can pump to or from either tank or the filter by changing the valve-settings-a combination which is necessary in this particular installation, since sufficient fall is not available for filling and discharging the filter by gravity. During a session on coal and coke at the February, 1926, meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the writer called attention to the important work on the X-ray analysis of coal1,2 being carried on in England by C. Norman Kemp and his associates. This aroused so much interest that a paper on the subject was requested for the October meeting. It has seemed advisable to make this paper a preliminary survey of the present status in the application of X-ray methods to coal problems and to follow it from time to time with further articles as the art develops. A survey of this sort naturally divides itself into two parts, radio-scopic analysis of the distribution of constituents through the body of the coal, and diffraction analysis of the state of association of the elementary components. In this article the subject matter concerning radioscopic analysis has been drawn almost entirely from the writings of Kemp and his associates and the illustrations have been sptcially furnished by him. It is a pleasure to record here a great indebtedness for this courtesy and cooperation. The subject matter and illustrations concerning diffraction analysis are taken from the author&apos;s unpublished researches. The reduction of manganese oxide from a basic slag by silicon dissolved in liquid iron at steelmaking temperatures was studied to determine the rate-controlling step for the process. The experiments were carried out under an argon atmosphere in a resistance-heated vertical-tube furnace. The two liquid phases, slag and metal, were held in zirconia crucibles. Sampling and chemical analysis of the slag phase led to time-concentration curves for the system. Results obtained by varying parameters such as temperature, stirring rate, concentration, and melt geometry defined the limiting reaction mechanism. The reduction of manganese oxide by silicon is a fast reaction and reached equilibrium within 90 min. The rate of stirring has a marked effect on the reaction rate, while, on the other hand, the effect of temperature is very small. This identifies the rate-controlling step as diffusion rather than interfaciul chemical reaction. The variation of other parameters revealed that a) diffusion of manganese in the iron phase is the slow step, b) the value of D/6 for manganese in iron at 1550°C is 7x 10-4 cm per sec, c) the energy of activation for the apparent rate constant is 7 kcal per mole, and d) increasing the amount of silicon in the iron decreases the diffusion coefficient of manganese. THE equilibrium relations pertinent to the reduction of manganese oxide from a steelmaking slag by silicon dissolved in liquid iron have been studied, but little is known about the mechanisms that control the rate of the process. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the rate of reduction by silicon and to determine the rate-limiting step. The effects of stirring rate, temperature, composition, and melt geometry were investigated as a means of identifying the controlling step. On the laboratory scale, relatively little work has been done in the area of slag-metal kinetics, primarily because of the problems confronted in attempting to contain liquid slags and metals in laboratory crucibles at steelmaking temperatures. Since graphite is an ideal material for a crucible, several investigations have been carried out on the reduction of various oxides from a slag by carbon in graphite-saturated iron and on the transfer of sulfur between a slag and graphite-saturated iron. Most of this work has been performed in induction furnaces. Studies where the container was not graphite are extremely limited. A single kinetic study of manganese transfer between molten iron and basic slags was carried out by Sano, Shiomi, and Matsushita.&apos; These investigators prepared calcium oxide and titanium oxide crucibles to contain the two-phase system. Only a few experiments were carried out and the results had to be treated qualitatively. Despite the paucity of kinetic data, a large quantity of information is available in the literature concerning the thermodynamics2-12 and physical properties&apos;3-21 of the slags containing manganese oxide and the dilute liquid iron alloys containing manganese and silicon which were involved in this research program. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD A vertical-tube resistance-heated furnace was used in this investigation to study the slag-metal reaction Although most previous slag-metal studies were carried out in induction furnaces, a resistance furnace has several advantages including better control of temperature and stirring rate. Hence, a resistance furnace was selected for this study, and its design is shown schematically in Fig. 1. Thermal arrest, hot-stage microscopy, and transtnission electron microscopy techniques have been employed to study the transformations in low-carbon iron and Fe-9 pct Ni alloys. In continuous cooling experiments, each alloy transforms at an essentially constant temperature for cooling rates below the critical rate required for martensite formation. However, high-tenzperature transformation in pure iron takes place by a different mechanism than that in the 9 pct Ni alloys. Pure iron exhibits an equi-a a structure with a low and random dislocation density while the 9 pct Ni alloy exhibits a cell or lathlike substructure analogous to that of low-carbon martensite. This same substructure characterizes upper bainite in higher-carbon inaterials. UNTIL relatively recently, diffusionless transformations have been considered to take place by the same mechanism and have been termed mar-tensitic transformations.l-3 The most characteristic feature2 of this mode of transformation is the shape change produced by a shear deformation and growth of the product phase frequently occurs at an extremely high velocity approaching that of an elastic wave.4&apos;5 A different mechanism of diffusionless transformation was recognized first in Cu-Ga and other copper-base alloys.6,7 From the absence of surface tilting in these alloys, it has been concluded that transformation is not accomplished by the cooperative shear displacements that occur in mar-tensitic reactions. Transformation presumably takes place by the rapid movement of an incoherent interface which is capable of propagating across parent grain boundaries. Although the transformation is diffusionless in the macroscopic sense, advancement of these interfaces is accomplished by an atom by atom rearrangement. Transformations of this type therefore require thermal activation and are generally operative only at high temperature. Although requiring short-range diffusion at the interface, propagation still occurs so rapidly that the reaction cannot be suppressed with normal cooling rates.7 The resulting microstructures exhibit large, irregular-shaped regions of the product phase, which are essentially free of crystallographic features. Consequently, these reactions have been termed massive transformations. Transformation by the massive mechanism has been reported to occur in ferrous systems involving pure iron and binary alloys of iron with nickel, chromium, and silicon by Gilbert and owen.&apos; The Fe-Ni system is of special interest in that the massive transformation was observed in alloys with less than 15 pct Ni while alloys having more than about 28 pct Ni transformed by the conventional mar-tensitic mechanism. By employing cooling rates substantially higher than those used by Gilbert and Owen, Swanson and Parr have been able to suppress the massive transformation in alloys with 0 to 10 pct Ni9 and produce martensite as revealed by surface relief. The massive transformation in the alloys having less than 15 pct Ni was identified by the lack of surface relief and an irregular rather than clearly acicular microstructure.&apos; Speich and Swann, using thin-foil electron microscopy, identified three distinctly different structures10 in quenched binary Fe-Ni alloys. From 0 to 4 pct Ni the structure consisted of blocky grains of a with a low and random dislocation density. Alloys with 4 to 25 pct Ni exhibited a cell structure with a high dislocation density; and at greater than 25 pct Ni the structure consisted of internally twinned plates. The structural change at approximately 4 pct Ni suggests that alloys with low nickel content transform by a different mechanism than those with intermediate nickel contents and the transition from the cellular to the internally twinned structures at approximately 25 pct Ni is analogous to the transition from needles to internally twinned plates that occurs over a narrow range of carbon contents in Fe-C martensites.11,12 Conventional bainitic and martensitic modes of austenite decomposition operate in ternary Fe-C-Ni alloys having less than 10 pct Ni. This investigation was conducted in order to explore the conditions under which the massive, bainitic, and martensitic transformations occur and the relationships between these modes of decomposition.

THAT metals and alloys of the body-centered-cubic structure tend to become unstable at low temperatures is so nearly universal that any exceptions are worthy of special attention. Studies of the exceptions may disclose unrecognized examples of metastability or may shed light on the nature of some of the factors that stabilize the body-centered-cubic phase. Among the structurally analogous body-centered-cubic 3/2 electron compounds, the ß-phase in the Cu-Zn system deserves further attention for, although this phase is known to undergo partial mar-tensitic transformation on cooling below room temperature to the temperature of liquid nitrogen when the composition is less than about 42 wt pct Zn, it does not transform on cooling .when there is more than this amount of zinc present.1-4 The present authors recently found that an alloy containing 48.35 wt pct Zn could be transformed, however, if deformed severely at room temperature or lower temperatures.V his discovery led to the suggestion that the jerky flow of ß-brass single crystals6 and some of the unusual temperature variations of the yield strength and hardness are due to strain-induced transformation during the tensile tests. The present investigation is an extension of that work to cover the entire available range of compositions of Cu-Zn ß-phase alloys and certain interesting compositions of the ß-phase in the Cu-Zn-Ga system. Particular attention is given to the structure of the transformation product resulting from cold work, which is found to vary with alloy composition, and to the temperature range in which transformation can be induced in the various alloys. The composition limits of the body-centered-cubic phase in the Cu-Zn system, based on a recent review by Raynor7 and the precision determinations of Beck and Smith: are shown in Fig. la; in the ß region the alloys are disordered and in the ß region they are ordered. The rate of ordering is so rapid that a high degree of order is found in any of these alloys immediately after quenching. Experimental The nine binary and four ternary alloys of this investigation were prepared from cathode copper (99.99 pct purity), electrolytic zinc (99.99+ pct), and gallium (99.98+ pct). All alloys were cast in transparent Vycor tubing, homogenized at temperatures between 800° and 890°C, and quenched in water. Ternary alloys were cast in small amounts (-5 g) to predetermined compositions to fall along a line of constant electron concentration in the ternary system. Changes of weight during the casting operation of the ternary alloys were not greater than 1 part in 2500 from the intended nominal weights and therefore their compositions were accepted without chemical analyses. All binary alloys were cast in larger amounts (100 to 150 g), homogenized, and hot rolled after preheating to 800°C. The central portion of the rolled strip of each alloy was annealed for eight days and quenched in brine. All binary alloys were analyzed chemically. The compositions, heat treatments, and metallographic appearances of all alloys are tabulated in Table I. Various samples were subjected to heat treatment or cold work at several temperatures and were then examined metallographically or by means of X-rays. Specimens about 6x6x3 mm in size were examined metallographic ally to confirm the presence of the ß-phase after quenching. Cold work was introduced by fastening each sample between two pieces of steel, cooling the assembly to the desired temperature, and transfering it rapidly to a vise where moderate or severe compression was immediately applied. Cold working at liquid helium temperature was done by a chisel-shaped tool mounted on an X-ray spectrometer, described elsewhere.% A!! metal-

Although an aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph provided some form of radial-line method is used to determine the true position of images. The slotted- templet method, which is based on the well-established radial-line principle, has made it possible to construct accurate mosaic maps at a cost comparable with that formerly charged for the average mosaic. It makes possible the securing of these results with far less ground control, which is always expensive. It has expanded widely the possible use of aerial photographs for mapping. ALTHOUGH a vertical or oblique aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph. Some ground controls or data are needed, the number and accuracy to be governed by the mapping method to be used and the scale and final accuracy desired in the finished map. RADIAL-LINE CONTROL It is essential that the principle of radial-line control in the use of vertical aerial photographs be understood and accepted before any confidence in the slotted-templet method can be gained. A simple sketch and some enlargements showing the Empire State Building will serve to illustrate the cause of displacement of an image that is above the datum plane as recorded in the photograph. The top of the tower of the Empire State Building is directly above the base, and when the image of the top is shown almost two blocks away from the center of the base, it is evident that the image of the top of the tower is not the true location, and in this particular case we know where the true location is; namely, over the center of the base of the tower. If the top of the tower were the top of a hill 1250 ft. high, we would have no way of knowing by inspection the true position of the top of the hill, so it is very important to have a method whereby the true location of any such point can be determined, and thereby make it possible to convert the detail of an aerial photograph into accurate information for mapmaking.
