THE crystal laboratory, Dept. of Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was confronted with the problem of obtaining a supply of optical grade calcium fluoride (CaF2) for use in growing synthetic CaFe2 crystals. A search of the known fluorspar deposits did not indicate that any quantity of optical spar could be obtained. Even the best material had to be sorted by hand to remove impurities. The process for growing CaF2 crystals developed by Professor D. C. Stockbarger of the Dept. of Physics, M.I.T., necessitates very pure feed materials. Exclusion of impurities is required, even in amounts detectable only spectrographically. The impurities occurred as minute inclusions of SiO2, BaSO4, CaCO3, FeS2, water or air. Crystals up to 4 in. in diam and weighing several pounds are made by the Harshaw Chemical Co. in Cleveland. Since the time required to grow a 4-in. crystal is about one week, and since the cost of manufacture is high, removal of impurities by any concentration method appeared practical. The mineral engineering section of the Dept. of Metallurgy undertook to investigate the possibility of concentrating clear optical fluorspar, -4 mesh +10 mesh, from a feed containing over 99 pct CaF2. Various innovations of the known methods of concentration were considered, but in each case the minute amount of impurities associated with the crystal produced such extremely small differences

Young† (communication to the Secretary): Before the appearance of Mr. Scott's paper in these Transactions we were not specially interested in the investigation which he has started; but at his request we have endeavored to collect from musty records and the recollection of our old friends a brief chronicle of the progress made by this house. As 3000 instruments were manufactured by us before any descriptive record was kept, and 2000 more before the record contained more than a statement whether the instrument was a transit or a level, and sometimes its size, we approach the task with timidity, trusting that the reader will bear the difficulties in mind, particularly as the writer's predecessors, from whom, no doubt, the information desired could have been obtained, have passed away. Instruments for surveying were manufactured by David Rittenhouse, of Philadelphia, as early as 1760; but it was not until late in the first quarter of this century that there was any American market for an instrument outside of the ordinary surveyor's compass. With the advent of canals and railroads, and the more extensive development of the Pennsylvania coalfields, arose a demand for surveying-instruments to meet problems in engineering beyond the limited field of the compass. THE texture method (utilizing monochromatic copper radiation) was applied to determine the orientation of the columnar grains of two vacuum cast beryllium ingots of 3 in. diam. Samples were mounted in a fixture as illustrated in Fig. 1, which permitted rotation and translation in order to approximate the method used for wires. The specimens were aligned so that the major axes of the columnar grains were parallel. Rotation was around the growth direction. After each translation the specimen holder was rotated 2 deg (1 deg for the samples from the second ingot) until a range of 30 deg on either side of the vertical was covered. The speed of translation was 1 mm per sec. A representative Debye pattern is shown in Fig. 2. The pattern was compared with theoretical patterns for various orientations. Also shown in Fig. 2 is the disposition of reflections on the (10i0), (0002), and (1011) Debye rings for the two possibilities that growth is either in the <10i0> or <ll30> direction. It is apparent that no significant preference for the direction of columnar growth is indicated. It is considered that the lack of a preferred orientation is due to the occurrence of the phase transformation (reported by Martin and oore&apos; to occur above 1250 "C) which masked the original solidification orientation. MCELVENNY.- Over 20 years ago I went back East on a little tour of copper companies to see how copper was handled and fabricated, and I met a Mr. Bassett who took me through the Waterbury branche of the American Brass Co. I have not seen this gentleman for 20 years, but I have a letter from him that I would like to read to you. &apos;The American Brass Co. Waterbury, Conn. May 19, 1930. Oldright has been temporarily released from his regular duties to act as your secretary. We have asked him and Mr. McElvenny to make the necessary preliminary arrangements and to present to you at the opening session the greetings of the officers and&apos; directors of the Institute. I am very glad that it has been possible for you to come together under the auspices of the Institute and that the acceptance of our invitation has been so very unanimous. Such an acceptance of the invitation to this meeting indicates your interest in getting together for an exchange of technical data and ideas. We anticipate that this meeting will be of real service to the smelting industry through your open discussion and exchange of ideas, and we sincerely hope that you will form an organization which will arrange for future meetings of a similar nature. While it probably may not be desirable to. distribute the minutes of this conference except to the members who take part in it, we hope that later the Institute publications may be enriched by such matter as you think it desirable to have published; and also, that some of you may be able to offer technical papers for the Institute publications. FOR distinguished service in the art of hydrometallurgy, the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America presented its gold medal to E. A. Cappelen Smith, at a dinner held in the Hotel Commodore, New York, on Nov.&apos; 10, 1920. Prof. Waldemar Lindgren, president of the society, in giving the medal, said: "By the advancement of the science of hydrometallurgy, by the construction of plants on a scale audacious in their conception, by the successful overcoming of all sorts of difficulties, you have placed your name among those who occupy the very front rank among the hydrometallurgists. In recognition of this distinguished contribution to the science of metallurgy, the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America now awards you its gold medal."

Various semiempirical equations which relate defect-formation energies and entropies with elastic and thermal properties of a metal crystal are shown to be related by a simple model for lattice energy. An illustrative comparison of theory with experiment is made using self-diffilsion data for fee metals. SEVERAL workers have related the free energy of defect formation with elastic and thermal properties of a crystal lattice, particularly elastic bulk modulus and Debye temperature. The present note shows how the various approaches are related by a simple model for lattice energy. A comparison of theory with experiment is given using the self-diffusion parameters of fee metals. 1) A MODEL OF THE CRYSTAL LATTICE The internal energy per atom in a metallic lattice may be written U=Ui-Ue [1] where Ui and Ue refer to ion-ion interaction and valence electron energies, respectively. Data about production are practically non-existent before 1860. The Census of 1840 reported a small amount, and a number of small mines were opened in the forties, all of the coal being used locally, or hauled to consumers in wagons. Tonnages shown in Table 72 are estimated from those for which authority is given. Railroads reported coal tonnages carried in the state in 1878 and subsequent years for years ending June 30th;, it is not stated that the tonnage originated in the state. Considering this fact, and the considerable amounts used locally, the tonnages given in Table 72 are certainly not larger than the actual amounts produced.

There are not many data about early coal production in Kentucky, but some legislative reports, early geological studies and occasional newspaper articles have left some figures. The earliest production with any authentic record is that of Lee County, the coal being boated down the Kentucky River to Frankfort. While never a large producer, this county has the longest record in the State. Production is recorded in several of the western coal counties in 1820, and in several others a few years later. The early production in Greenup County was for the iron furnaces operating there. Clay County had a large salt output in the early days and this required a large output, for those days, of coal; the amount of fuel is based on the quantity of salt. It will be noticed that several counties on the Ohio River produced considerable quantities of coal before the Civil War, much of it being consumed by the river steamers. Since the end of the war, these counties have never occupied the relatively important position they had prior to that time. All of the coal produced in the eastern mountain counties moved out of them by water before the war, and during that struggle nearly all mining was stopped. The growth of the railroads after the war greatly reduced the river traffic from these counties, and in some cases it was never renewed. The coal shipped from Lawrence County prior to 1861 all moved by water; after that date there was no production excepting for local use until 1879, and since that time, all shipments have been by rail. Some of the early railroad reports have been helpful in reporting shipments, but for the early years very few of them can be found, and after about 1879 the quantities reported cannot be identified as to origin. Pres. J. B. Hill, Louisville and Nashville Railroad, furnished all of the data available for his line. Sources of data are shown on Table 61; other figures are estimated. A list of early Kentucky mines is given in Table 13.

While coal has been found in numerous counties in this state, it has only been produced commercially in a few of them. Production data are more than usually meager, and little data could be derived from the railroad reports of tonnages carried. All data is given in Table 65.

Early production records are practically nonexistent, although the early geological survey reports mention a number of mines as being in operation at the dates of the field surveys. Reports of the Bureau of Statistics began in 1878, and as usual, the tonnages reported were undoubtedly small. County histories gave some production figures, but not many. The use of the Indiana block coal in blast furnaces furnished a substantial market for a number of years, which ended about the close of the Civil War. Some coke was made from Indiana coal for several years in the eighteen-forties, as is described in the chapter on Coke. (Chapter 35.)

Some coal was mined in Wyoming for use at the forts as early as 1859, but the commercial development began in 1867, and mining increased with the completion of the Union Pacific Railroad. Tonnages produced are shown in Table 78. [ ]

The development of coal mining in this state has been well described by Goodyear, and much data are also given in the reports of the U. S. Commissioner of Mining Statistics, and the tonnages in Table 69 are from these sources, only a few of them being estimated. [ ]

Most of the early coal production in Tennessee was for iron-making, and here, contrary to the usual custom, coal was used in the early furnaces before charcoal was. There was no salt industry of any volume. A considerable quantity of the coal used in the state before the Civil War was brought down the Cumberland River from eastern Kentucky, and both Pittsburgh coal and coal from the river mines in Kentucky was brought up the Tennessee River. The Memphis market was supplied almost entirely by river from Pittsburgh seam mines until the end of the period. The available data did not permit the production by counties to be estimated. [ ]
