Rates of migration of large-angle boundaries have been studied in zone-refined aluminum crystals, defonned 80 pct by rolling in the (110)[112] orientation at -78°C followed by a recovery anneal at 80°C. Artificially nucleated grains show a marked variation. by an order of magnitude, in their growth rates in different directions. The average activation energy for the migration of all boundaries was found to be about 16,000 cal per mole. The anisotropy of the boundary migration is rationalized on the basis of the boundary structure. It has been observed by Beck and HU,1 Kohara el al,2,3 and Czjzek and Haessner4 that recrystallized grains formed upon annealing Of deformed sing1e crystals of aluminum show anisotropic growth characteristics. Kohara et al. found that single crystals rolled in the (110)[112] orientation, when random nuclei were provided on one side of the crystal by rubbing with emery paper and annealing, developed a sharp recrys-tallization texture on the other side of the crystal upon further annealing. This sharp recrystallization texture consisted of four components, which were related to the deformation texture of the crystal, i.e. (110)[112], by rotations of ±40 deg around each of the two common [ 111] axes' They also noted that recrystallized grains were elongated in directions perpendicular to either of these two common [1111 axes. They attributed this anisotropic growth to the difference in the rate of self-diffusion or diffusion of impurity atoms along the tilt and the twist boundaries. A somewhat similar investigation was conducted by Czjzek and Haessner4 On strained single-crystal sheets Of alum- inum. These authors claimed that the matrix structure of the deformed crystal had a greater effect on the growth anisotropy of the recrystallized grains than did the boundary orientation itself. In the present investigation quantitative measurements of the rate of grain boundary migration in anisotropic growth have been made in zone-refined aluminum (99.9999+pct pure) crystals deformed 80 pct by rolling in the (110) 112] orientation. Crystals of this particular orientation were chosen because of the following desirable features: 1) the crystal does not change its orientation during rolling; 2) the rolling plane contains all the significant crystallographic directions; and 3) when annealed, following deformation, the crystal does not re-crystallize spontaneously but polygonizes to a stable and homogeneous structure. Hence, the initial orientation of the crystal and a constant strain energy in the matrix can be maintained during subsequent grain boundary migration studies. It is essential to keep the driving force constant for the study of boundary mobility.5 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A cylindrical single crystal of 1 in. diam was grown by the Bridgman method in a high-purity graphite mold. The resistance ratio, R(4.2°K) /R(298°K) , of the grown crystal was approximately 2.0 x 10-4. A number of slices, 1/4 in. thick, were cut from the crystal along the (110) plane and were mechanically and electrolyti-cally polished to remove the strained surface layer. The crystals were then rolled along the [112] direction to 80 pct reduction in thickness at -78°C. To minimize surface friction, the crystals were rolled between two layers of 0.005-in. teflon sheet. Rolling was interrupted, prior to completion, to remove the surface layers and the edges by electropolishing. These and similar precautions in handling the rolled crystals

MoIstuRe in coal must be considered as an impurity, just the same as ash, from the standpoint of utilization of the coal. Being incombustible, it reduces directly the heating value of the coal, and in addition absorbs heat for its evaporation. Its presence means useless expenditures in handling and transportation. In coke plants, extra moisture reduces capacity and may cause damage to brick work and equipment. Accordingly, the removal of extra moisture can be considered just as important as the removal of other impurities, such as ashes, in the modern coal preparation plant. Moisture, which can be removed by heating the coal up to a temperature of 100°C, may be retained in various forms: 1. As a film, on the surface of each coal particle, and in the interstices between particles, retained by capillary forces. 2. Or "occluded" inside the coal particles. This occluded moisture may be either free moisture (as in a sponge), or hygroscopic moisture which varies with atmospheric conditions, (also called "regain"). These latter forms of moisture are particularly common in "young" coals (subbituminous and lignites); bloom coals (seam outcrops); fusain; and carbonized products. In our study of coal drying, we shall consider only the removal of free moisture, exclusive from hygroscopic moisture. Dewatering If we reserve the name of drying to the removal of water by evaporation, we must consider the initial phase of the mechanical removal of free moisture as a distinct operation covered by the term dewatering. In all cases the free water carried over the surface of the coal particles or in their interstices, or in their pores, is retained by capillary forces. Dewater-ing is accomplished by breaking or counteracting these capillary forces; removal of as much water as possible by dewatering methods is usually advisable, as the cost of these operations is generally much less than by evaporation. The most common methods of me-chanical dewatering are: 1. "Pressure piling," which reduces the interstitial spaces, accomplished in dewatering bins or over dewatering screens. 2. Or dynamic methods, such as used in centrifuges or over vibrating screens. We shall only mention the " preferential wetting" method, in which surface water can be displaced by hydrocarbons, as offering possibilities, but which, to our knowledge, has not reached yet a practical development. But we must point out that the capillary forces retaining water on the coal surfaces, decrease considerably with increased temperatures. This is the principle used in all modern dishwashing machines; by using very hot water, dishes are extracted almost dry. In line with this development, we favor the type of dryers including a dewatering section; as the coal enters the dryer and is gradually brought up to higher temperatures, its dewatering ability is increased and advantage can be taken of this conditioning, resulting in increased drying efficiencies and reductions in drying costs. Heat Drying In the final phase, the remaining moisture must be evaporated. Coal and water must be brought up to the chosen temperature of evaporation, and heat must be supplied to fill the requirements of the latent heat of evaporation of the water to be removed. Accordingly, drying becomes largely a problem of heat transfer, and drying methods can be classified accordingly, namely: 1. Radiant transfer. 2. Transfer by surface contact and conduction. 3. Transfer by hot gas contact. The first method is not applicable to coal drying; the second method is used in the old type rotary dryer. The third method, the most commonly used in modern coal dryers, will be the only one considered here; and, of course, we shall deal with continuous types of dryers only. The mechanism of complete drying is really very complex-—several phases are involved: 1. The constant rate period. 2. The uniform falling rate period. 3. The varying falling rate period. As most of our practical coal drying problems deal with wet coals (over 6 pct of moisture), and do not require complete drying (under 1.5 pct), we shall deal with the first condition only, namely the constant rate drying. (written 'discussion *).-Prof. Young's paper shows another application of electricity in solving problems in coal mining, and suggests that it may be possible to utilize the data he has collected in developing an electric firedamp detector. If electric lamps are to be adopted in gassy coal mines, the use of an electric firedamp detector becomes almost imperative, for safety lamps and electric lamps in the same mine are not always conducive to safety, and Liveings electric firedamp detector, is too cumbersome to meet with general approval. Three well understood facts are verified in a new way by Prof. Young's experiments: - 1. The temperature at which methane ignites. 2. The more inflammable gas present in an atmosphere, the hotter will be the flame, and the longer the cap in a safety lamp. 3. As the temperature at the source of ignition varies, the length of the gas-cap flame varies. Prof. H. B. Dixon collaborating with Mr. H. F. Coward, some years ago, made experiments on the ignition of various gases to find the tem-perature of their kindling points.1 From the results of their experiments, the writer has culled the ignition temperatures of some hydrocarbon gases, and has tabulated them with other data, in Table 1.

In the selective flocculation of iron ores, the concentration of alkaline earth ions in pulp solutions plays a critical role. Sodium silicate, alone or with sodium tripolyphosphate, has been used as a dispersant. When Ca+ + concentration exceeds 15 to 20 ppm, however, only a strong complexing agent, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) was found to be effective (Heerema, Lipp, and Iwasaki, 1979). Some iron ores release Ca+ + in excess of 20 ppm. With ores that contain gypsum, the Ca+ + concentration may reach several hundred ppm. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effectiveness of EDTA with nitrilotriacetate (NTA) in countering the adverse effects of Ca+ +, particularly at high Ca+ + concentrations. Emphasis was placed on the use of NTA since it is more cost-effective than EDTA. It is also used in detergents in some countries (Malaiyandi, Williams, and O'Grady, 1979). NTA, like EDTA, forms a soluble complex with Ca+ + with a 1:1 molar ratio. Its structure and the value of log Kca are given below together with EDTA (Shibata, 1963). [ ] For experimental materials, an equal weight mixture of Lac Jeannine hematite and a high-purity quartzite from Thompson, MN, both ground to - 30 µm (- 560 mesh) was used. Selective flocculation test conditions and procedures were identical to those used in previous investigations (Heerema, Lipp, and Iwasaki, 1979). The optimum level of starch addition for the above mixture was determined to be at 300 g/t (0.6 lb per st). Initially, a series of selective flocculation tests were performed on the mixture pulped with 10-3M CaC12 (40 ppm Ca + +) at pH 11. With no NTA present, flocculation of the entire suspension resulted. The selectivities achieved in tests with 90, 100, and 150% of the stoichiometric amount of NTA were virtually identical to each other and also to the selectivity of separation obtained in the absence of Ca+ + Such an observation could have been expected since Ca+ + concentrations up to a few ppm may be tolerated in selective flocculation (Krishnan and Iwasaki, 1982). A similar series of tests were performed at 10-2M CaC12 (400 ppm Ca+ +). The results are shown in Fig. 1 as grade¬recovery curves. For comparison, the results obtained in the absence of Ca++ are included. At 90% of the stoichiometric amount of NTA, a large enough concentration of uncomplexed Ca+ + was left in solution to cause indiscriminate flocculation. Note in this figure that NTA is capable of countering the adverse effect of Ca+ + even at this high concentration when it is used in excess of stoichiometric amounts. The free Ca+ + concentrations at 100 and 150% are calculated to be 2.5 and 0 ppm, respectively. [ ] The relative effectiveness of NTA and EDTA was then compared at 100% of the stoichiometric amount using 10-2M and 10-3M CaCI2 (Fig. 2). EDTA appears to be slightly more effective than NTA. The free Ca++ of 0.02 ppm in 10-2M CaC12 with EDTA compared to 2.5 ppm free Ca+ + with NTA might account for the difference. As evident, prohibitively high additions of EDTA and NTA were required to complex high concentrations of calcium ion. The use of both of these agents would result in the accumulation of complexed Ca+ + in recycle water.

The only slip system observed in zirconium crystals deformed at 77", 575", and 1075OK was (1010) [1210] with a critical resolved shear stress in tension of 1.0 kg per sq mm at 77°K; 0.2 kg per sq mm at 575 °K; and 0.02 kg per sq mm at 1075 OK. The active twin planes were {1012}, (1121}, (11221, and (11233) with varying temperature dependence. A detailed analysis for the slip direction using Laue spot asterism is appended. NeARLY all metals of the hexagonal close-packed structure exhibit basal slip, i. e.,(0002)<1120>- type slip. This is true of magnesium,&apos; zinc,&apos; cadmium,3 beryllium,4 titanium,= yttrium,6 and rhenium.Many of these such as titanium 5&apos;8-&apos;0beryllium,4&apos;" magnesium, and zinc13&apos;14 display other slip modes even at room temperature, and nearly all have been reported to slip on other systems under particular loading or temperature conditions of testing. As is shown in this paper, basal slip was not found at any of four test temperatures from 77" to 1075°K in hexagonal close-packed zirconium under the simple loading conditions of tension and compression, even though in one case the resolved shear stress on the inactive (0002) <llgO> system was twenty-five times higher than the critical resolved shear stress on the active (1010) [1210] system. This result is consistent with prior studies on the active deformation processes in zirconium deformed at room temperature. &apos;&apos;-I7 SPECIMEN PREPARATION A) Material—The zirconium used in this work was of two types: 1) as-deposited reactor grade crystal-bar, and 2) arc-melted and forged reactor grade crystal-bar. Typical chemical and spectrographic analyses of these materials as received, and after hydrogen removal and crystal growth are given in Ref. 17. Crystals of type 1) above have the letter prefix (A) and those of type 2) have the prefix (B) throughout this paper. B) Crystal Growth— he zirconium was machined into rectangular parallelepipeds about 0.2-in. scl in cross section and 2 in. iong. These were hand polished through 4/0 abrasive paper, electropolished, given a hydrogen removal anneal, and subjected to long-time anneals at 840 °C in vacuo to produce usable crystals.&apos;7 A second technique used to obtain large crystals was to cycle the samples two or three times between 1200" and 840°C, allowing them to remain at the higher temperature for about 4 hr and at the lower temperature for 5 days.17 These techniques yielded some grains which occupied the entire cross section of the bar and were as long as 3/4 in. C) Orientation Determination—After the growth of large crystals by thermal cycling, the samples were repolished with extreme care through 4/0 abrasive paper and electropolished. Metallographic examination after polishing showed the surfaces to be free of visible deformation traces. Standard Laue back-reflection X-ray techniques were used to find the crystallographic orientations of selected large grains with respect to a specimen face and edge. Fig. 1 shows the stereographic projections of the stress axes for the crystals used. The sharpness of the spots on the Laue photographs indicated that the crystals were of good quality. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Nine crystals were deformed in tension at 77"K, nine in tension and five in compression at 300°K in previous tests,17 fifteen in tension at 575"K, and eleven in tension at 1075°K. All specimens were stressed by load increments. After a predetermined load was applied, the specimen was removed from the loading appratus and metallographically examined for deformation traces. An attempt was made to initially stress each bar so that some crystals slipped a small amount and others not at all. This was done to bracket the critical resolved shear stress. One bar of special orientation (B-11) was repolished and annealed at 1075°K for 1 hr after lower temperature deformation, before final deformation at 1075°K. In the other bars the loading by increments, followed by metallographic examination, was continued until the surface distortion would interfere with analysis, or until fracture. One example of a crystal pulled to fracture is shown in Fig. 2. This photograph shows a crystal (B-14C) which was pulled at 1075°K and failed by slip on two (10i0) planes. The approximate orientation of this crystal is illustrated in the figure. Specimens were deformed at 77°K in liquid nitrogen on a tensile machine using an insulated bucket with an internal hook to accept a clamped specimen.

This report is a continuation of an earlier one with a similar titlell to which the reader is referred for such details of procedure as do not appear here. A brief summary will be given of the objects and methods of the research at this time. It was pointed out in the previous paper that properties of magnesium alloys, as reported by different workers, often differ. This was thought to be due to differences in the preparation of the specimens tested. The ideal way to compare alloys would be to prepare each of them in so many ways that reasonable assurance would exist that the best properties of each alloy had been developed. The alloys would then be compared on the basis of these properties. The treatment actually given the alloys of these studies is necessarily a compromise with completeness. Nevertheless, enough treatments have been given so that a considerable degree of assurance exists that the properties obtained are representative of the alloy as such, and not merely of the manner in which it was worked and heat-treated. Procedure The alloys were cast in the form of cylindrical ingots, which were extruded into bar before being rolled. Some of the ingots were made in 2-in. diameter molds whereas all of the alloys of the previous paper were cast in 4.in. molds. For the larger ingots, the extruded bar was 2 by 0.140 in.; lor the 2-in. ingots, it was I by 0.100 in. Preliminary work indicated that strip rolled from both sizes of the bars would have substantially the same properties. The bar was rolled at some temperature in the range 400&apos; to 800°F., for a total reduction of 50 per cent. The temperature and reduction per pass were so selected that no cold cracking occurred, but were such as to leave the metal in a semihard condition. The hot-rolled metal was annealed at several temperatures in the range 400&apos; to 800°F.; it was also cold-rolled, and given solution and aging treatments. Two standard test bars corresponding to each treatment were pulled in tension, and the average was obtained. Twelve treatments, in all, were given each alloy. The properties of the annealed specimen having the highest percentage of elongation were selected to represent the alloy in the annealed condition. The properties of the cold-rolled specimen having the highest yield strength were selected to represent the alloy in the cold-rolled condition. These properties were then plotted against percentage composition by analysis. Smooth curves were drawn among the points, thus graphically averaging the results over the entire range studied. The percentage of elongation in the cold-rolled state was not plotted, since it was always low, and varied in an irregular manner with composition. IN THE literature on the elimination of metalloids in basic open-hearth practice, there are a great many heats recorded in which excellent data on changes in slag and metal composition during refining are given, but in almost all of these heats either temperature data or weights and analysis of charge are unrecorded and observations on the physical characteristics of the slag are almost always lacking. With these points in mind, a test heat was made in which as complete as data possible on all the factors that affect the elimination of metalloids were obtained. THE TEST HEAT The test heat was made in a standard 100 ton stationary furnace at the Lackawanna Steel Co., Lackawanna, N. Y. on January 17, 1922. The Charge-Scrap.-The scrap consisted entirely of rail-heat butts, selected from a number of heats made, the week before the test. The average analysis of the scrap was calculated from the analysis of these heats-and from the weight of scrap from each heat. Pig Iron.-Two ladles of pig iron were used in the charge and two samples were taken from each ladle as it was poured into the furnace. These four samples were composited for the average pig-iron sample.

UNQUESTIONABLY the Coal Division has never had a meeting in which so many outstanding technical papers were presented of immediate practical application to problems of personnel, mining, safety, preparation, combustion, and carbonization. Should there have been those present with the lingering idea that all that was needed for success in the coal industry was a strong back and a weak mind they must have had a rude awakening.

IN 1923 Desch¹ pointed out that the grains in a metal which is anisotropic with respect to its thermal coefficient of expansion would contract differently upon cooling, and that the stresses developed might approximate the plastic strength of the metal. More recently Boas and Honeycombe2-5 studied the behavior of several metals upon thermal cycling and observed that the stresses developed in arlisotropic metals are great enough to produce slip lines in individual grains and a roughening of the specimen surface. This phenomenon they have named "thermal fatigue." The mechanism they propose involves essentially a kneading of the grains, the deformation being alternately in compression and tension in a given grain as the temperature is changed in one direction and then the other. The present work was undertaken to investigate the possibility that an additional mechanism might operate to produce plastic deformation during thermal cycling—a "thermal ratchet" that depends upon a combination of grain boundary flow to relax the stress that develops between differently oriented grains upon raising the temperature and transcrys-talline slip to relax the oppositely directed stress which develops on lowering the temperature. Thus, thermal cycling should produce a nonreversible distortion such that certain grains will change shape differently from their neighbors with a simultaneous displacement being produced at the grain boundary. Temperature Dependence of Grain Boundary and Grain Strength The critical resolved stress for the initiation of slip in metal grains is only mildly affected by temperature." For example, in cadmium it decreases from 0.15 to about 0.05 kg per sq mm when the temperature is increased from 20° to 458°K and further temperature increase causes little further decrease. On the other hand, the work of KG1 indicates that the grain boundaries behave in a viscous fashion that can be described8 by the expression: t = BVexp(Q/RT) [1] t is the shearing stress on the boundary; B, a constant; V, the flow rate at the boundary; Q, the activation energy for grain boundary flow; R, the gas law&apos;s constant; and T, the absolute temperature. Eq 1 indicates that the stress necessary to cause a given grain boundary flow rate, V, decreases rapidly with increasing temperature. The value of the constant B is such that at sufficiently low temperature and ordinary strain rates deformation will occur preferentially by slip rather than by grain boundary flow. There is considerable evidence to indicate Consider the bicrystal shown in Fig. 1. In grain 1 the slip plane lies 45 " to the boundary while in grain 2 the slip plane is 90" to the boundary. The coefficients of expansion of the grains in a direction parallel to the length of the crystal are a1 and a, with a, > a2 for the orientations shown. The sequence of events that can occur upon heating and cooling this specimen is illustrated schematically in Fig. 2. Initially there is assumed to be no stress in the specimen (A). Upon heating, grain 1 attempts to become longer than grain 2, but is constrained by grain 2. Thus grain 1 is loaded in compression and grain 2 is loaded in tension, and a shearing stress is present across the boundary (B). As the temperature is increased, the stress will build up, and finally grain 1 will be plastically deformed by slip, since the greater stress is resolved on its slip planes. Any further heating will result in more slip and the stress will remain constant until some temperature T* is reached where the stress can be relaxed by grain boundary flow.† At this relaxation temperature (C) a step will appear between grain 1 and grain 2. Further heating above T* will cause grain 1 to become relatively longer, but no stress will appear because the grain boundary is too weak to support the stress (D). Upon cooling again, at T* (E), the grain boundary will again be able to support a shearing stress, and upon cooling further, grain 1 will be loaded in tension and grain 2 in compression (F). When the decrease in temperature below T* is sufficient to impose the critical shear stress upon the slip plane of grain 1, it will be stretched by slip.

Alpha solutes increase the strengths of Ti-Mn alloys through solid-solution strengthening. The substitutional a addition, aluminum, decreases, and the interstitial solutes, carbon and nitrogen, increase the rate of nucleation and growth of a from ß. The best combinations of properties of a-ß alloys are obtained when there is a sufficient quantity of a phase in the structure to dissolve the a solutes. OF the many different titanium-base alloy systems, the predominant alloy type is the a-ß alloy. The properties of the a-ß alloys are dependent on solid-solution strengthening and heat-treatment effects involving the a-ß ratio and transformation reactions. Another variable which influences the mechanical properties of a-ß alloys is the a-stabilizer content of the alloy. An a solute may be present as an intentional addition, such as aluminum, or as an impurity element, such as carbon, oxygen, or nitrogen. It is known that these a stabilizers, when added to titanium, form single-phase alloys which are not heat treatable but which obtain their strength from solid-solution strengthening. Thus, it would be expected that a additions to a-ß alloys would increase the strength of the alloys by solid-solution strengthening of the a phase. In addition, they would affect the transformation kinetics of the ß-to-a reactions and other processes based on the instability of the ß phase. The effects of heat treatment and structure on the mechanical properties of Ti-Mn alloys have been shown in a previous paper.6 This system offers a good base to demonstrate the effects of typical a solutes on the properties of a-ß alloys. The three a solutes described in this work are aluminum, representative of a substitutional a solute, nitrogen, representative of an interstitial a solute, and carbon, representative of an interstitial compound-forming element. The effects of heat treatment and microstructure on the properties of a alloys containing these three elements are described in concurrent publications. Some of these data are used for base-line points in several of the curves used for illustration herein. Experimental Procedures Iodide titanium was used as the base for all of the alloys studied in this work. The alloys were prepared as ½ lb ingots by double arc melting in an argon atmosphere. The ingots were forged to ¾ in. rounds, vacuum annealed for 6 hr at 900°C at a pressure of 10 &apos; to 10-5 mm of Hg to remove hydrogen, and hot swaged to 1/4 in. diam rod. After me- chanical descaling, test specimens were prepared for heat treatment. The alloys used in this study together with the fabrication temperatures are given in Table I. Heat treatments were done in argon. For the most part, the specimens were sealed in Vyeor capsules under a partial pressure of argon. Quenching was accomplished by breaking the capsule under water. Other cooling methods used included oil quench, argon cool (simulated air cool in an argon atmosphere), and furnace cool. The times for the various heat-treating temperatures are given in Table 11. The tests performed on the alloys consisted of tensile tests on ? in. diam specimens, hardness tests, and microimpact tests. Specimen sizes have been adequately described in a previous publication.&apos; The micrographs presented in this paper were taken from specimens cut from the shoulders of broken tensile specimens. Final polishing was done with Linde B on a slow-speed wheel, and the specimens were etched with a 1½ HF — 3½ HNO, solution. Ti-N-Mn Alloys The transformation diagram and microstructures of the Ti-0.1 pct N-Mn alloys used in this investigation are given in Fig. 1. The effect of small nitrogen additions on the binary Ti-Mn diagram is to raise the ß-transus temperature with little effect on the a solubility of manganese. Also, as has been noted previously,&apos; high manganese-content alloys containing nitrogen, when quenched from temperatures high in the ß field, contain a subgrain boundary phase which appears to be nitrogen-rich a. FOREWORD This paper by Mr. Thorneycroft, Past President of the Institution of Mining Engineers (Great Britain), and chairman of its Subsidence Committee, is a valuable contribution to the assemblage of data on ground movement and subsidence from coal mining. It deals with the effects of advancing longwall, a method almost universal in Europe but as vet little used in the United States outside of Northern Illinois and in a few scattered places elsewhere, in thin coal beds, as in the Lexington field, Missouri, Canon City field, Colorado, and the Birmingham field, Alabama. Although by advancing- longwall, a maximum recovery of coal is obtained and it has to be employed where there are weak shale roofs, especially in deep mines, it is a more expensive method of operation unless the mining conditions are favorable, which is unusual in the United States. On the other hand, there is a growing use in this country of what is essentially retreating long wall, with an approximately straight break-line as described by Rayburn.1 With this method, in which the pillars are substantial, it was shown that the ground movement effect is practically identical with that of advancing longwall, hence the value to mining engineers of the precise data given by Mr. Thorneycroft. His study is unusual in several respects; it deals with conditions connected with ,the mining of a coal bed 20 in. thick, about 490 ft. below the surface, over a mined-out area in a 5-ft. bed about 90 ft. below, which had been mined about 12 years earlier. Both mines passed under Plean House, a building of massive cut stone construction built over a century ago, in which Mr: Thorneycroft resided throughout the under-mining period. Slight cracks opened in the walls as the longwall face approached the house in mining the upper seam, and closed after the face passed and subsidence took place. In the northwest wall, the last wall the face passed under, some stone blocks were broken, which was attributed to a strike period when the advance of face came nearly to a standstill. Other than this there was no perceptible permanent damage, as indicated by the photographs taken by the undersigned in 1923 (Figs. 1 and 2). Mr. Thorneycroft used a novel means of studying the successive positions of the corners of the building: he hung plumb bobs from the eaves and traced the paths of the respective plumb bob points on level surfaces. The angles made by the house walls with the plumb bob lines gave measures of the slope of the subsidence wave at the respective points. A slight upward wave was indicated by the surveys ahead of the subsidence, which would appear to be due to a tilting over of the massive sandstone stratum in the roof measures near the surface, the edge of the subsidence area acting as the fulcrum.
