The frontal-advance equation can determine how the fluid withdrawal rate and subsurface operating pressure influence oil recovery from pressure-maintained reservoirs having characteristics favorable for efficient vertical segregation. For effective vertical segregation in formations having low dip angles, the requirements are: thick, massive sands, low viscosity oil and high vertical permeability with few discontinuous shale members. This approach has been successfully applied to the LL-370, which is a massive Eocene sandstone reservoir containing crude with an average gravity of 26" APT, a dip of only 3" and vertical permeability of ½ darcy. The average gas cap saturation was calculated for various rates of vertical gas-oil contact movement corresponding to a wide range of reservoir producing rates. This method also evaluated the effect of different pressure maintenance levels on oil recovery. Applicability of this procedure for calculating the present oil saturation in the LL-370 gas cap has been substantiated from field performance, where the oil saturation was computed by comparing oil recovery with the gas cap volume vacated. INTRODUCTION During the natural depletion history of the LL-370 reservoir, located in Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, excellent vertical segregation resulted in the formation of a thin gas zone over a substantial portion of the oil-productive area. Subsequently, gas injection forced this thin gas-saturated zone slowly downward, reducing the oil saturation in the gas cap to a low value. The oil recovery has been raised considerably above earlier predictions where vertical segregation effects were under-estimated. In order to determine the maximum efficient producing rate and optimum operating pressure for this reservoir, a vertical gas frontal-advance analysis has been made through application of the fractional flow equation. LL-370 RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS The reservoir consists of a truncated monocline of massive. highly-permeable Eocene sandstone, called the B-b formation, covering an area of more than 13,500 acres. The original oil in place was 2.17 billion STB. Internal non-sealing faults subdivide the structure into four blocks called the B-6-x.6, 10, 11 and 13, which are effectively bounded by major faulting on the flanks, an unconformity updip to the west, and an immobile aquifer to the southeast. The producing formation occurs at an average depth of 5,250 ft subsea and has a closure of more than 1,500 ft. A typical producing section has a net oil sand thickness of 170 ft. Scattered throughout the section are a few randomly-positioned shale lenses which increase in thickness and areal extent downdip. The reservoir rock and fluid properties vary with depth. The permeability and produced oil gravity are 1600 md and 28" API at the top, compared to 300 md and 18° API at the water-oil contact. The productivity of updip wells is, therefore, much higher than the reservoir average. The reservoir oil was originally saturated at the crest, grading to a slight degree of undersaturation at the water-oil contact. There was no original gas cap; and material balance and the field performance indicate no water influx. Except for the northern B-6-x.6 block, the fluid and rock properties have already been published.' Average LL-370 reservoir properties are shown in Table 1. The petroleum industry is confronted with the problem of conservalion. This is not a simple problem in view of a wide difference of opinion among authorities as to whether conservation is necessary and the specific direction that it should take. Many writers accuse the petroleum industry of wasting the natural resources of the country. Others link the consuming public with the industry in this waste. Let us define our terms; agree, if possible, on where and when waste occurs in connection with either the recovery or use of petroleum and select such plans for conservation as appear most practical. A plan for conserv3tion which appears to be logical today may not meet the problem tomorrow. The conservation of petroleum is closely linked with the advancement of marly arts and sciences and as these advance, the plan of conservation has to change. The need for conservation does not necessarily rest upon the elimination of waste. There is not necessarily a fixed connection between waste and conservation. Conservation may be necessary or desirable although there is no waste. Definitions Waste: Useless or unnecessary expenditure. Conservation: The preservation of the natural resources for economical use. Both definitions contain adjectives the interpretation of which is extremely difficult. It is the determination of what expenditures are "unnecessary" or what uses are "economical" that will require study and agreement. If one lets his automobile engine run in cold weather in order to keep it hot, it is difficult to measure that necessity. If an automobile is driven two blocks, when the driver is physically capable of walking, what is the measure of necessity. This question is in the realm of one of the oldest of sociological problems, "What is a luxury?"—a problem which has not been solved. The history of society indicates that the measure of a man's wealth has been the measure of necessity. What he can afford to buy without stinting himself in some other direction, is not a luxury to him and, if it fulfills his desires, may be considered his necessity.

The labor policy of the Standard Oil Co. (New Jersey) is founded first of all on paying at least the prevailing scale of wages for similar work in the community; on the eight-hour day at the refinery, with time and one-half for overtime; one day's rest in seven; sanitary and up-to-date working conditions; just treatment assured each employee; opportunity for training and advancement; payment of accident benefits beyond the amount prescribed by the State compensation law; health supervision by a competent medical staff; payment of sickness benefits after one year's service; coöperation with employees in promoting thrift and better social and housing. conditions; and assurance of a generous annuity at the age of 65, guaranteed for life after 20 years of service. Most of these features have been a part of the company's policy for many years, but it is only during the past two years that the cooperation of employees in determining these matters has been definitely assured through industrial representation. Industrial representation, in the Standard Oil Co. (N. J.), is a principle rather than a procedure. It is built upon the belief that personal association of those interested in any problem leads to a mutual understanding and a fair decision as to what is right. Fully believing in this principle, representatives of employees and representatives of management evolved a simple plan, the basis of which is that it gives every individual employee representation at joint conferences on problems and fundamental principles affecting all those interested in the industry. It is based on cooperation, not antagonism; its operation makes perfectly clear both to management and to employees that their interests are identical, and not at variance with the interests of the stockholders, and that mutual understanding and cooperation insure progress and success for all. Furthermore, experience has definitely shown that representatives of the employees are not only alert for the employees' interests but are as keen as the representatives of the management in determining and insisting upon fairness to the employer. The rate of dissolution of recrystallized alumina in molten iron oxide in equilibrium with iron at 1450°C was studied by rotating alumina disks in the melt. The samples were rotated from 1 to 12 min at speeds from 54 to 3270 rpm. It is concluded from the experimental results that the process is limited by diffusion in the liquid boundary layer. The interdiffusion coefficient for the dissolution of alumina disks in pure molten iron oxide was estimated to be about 3 xl0-5= sq cm per sec. THE erosion of refractory materials is of considerable importance in iron- and steelmaking processes. Since many refractories contain alumina, this investigation was undertaken to develop a further understanding of the erosion mechanism. Shurygin et al.1-3 have investigated the rate of dissolution of alumina in molten silicates and molten fluorides by rotating alumina disks in various melts. The rates were reported to be limited by diffusion in the liquid boundary layer. In the present investigation the rate of dissolution of alumina in molten iron oxide in equilibrium with iron was studied in a similar manner; alumina disks were rotated at different speeds in molten iron oxide at 1450°C. The relationship between the rate of dissolution of the flat surface of the disk and the speed of rotation was used to determine whether the process is limited by diffusion in the liquid boundary layer or by some chemical reaction mechanism. APPARATUS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A schematic diagram of the experimental apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The iron oxide melts were contained in 2-in.-diam high-purity iron crucibles that were centered in a cylindrical graphite susceptor. Prior to each sequence of experiments, sufficient reagent-grade ferric oxide was added to a crucible to form approximately 350 g of molten iron oxide; the depth of the melt was about 11/2 in. To prevent excessive erosion of the crucible, about 70 pct of the required iron was added to the crucible in the form of iron powder. The mixture was melted in an atmosphere of purified argon by induction heating with a 250-kc generator. After the oxide was molten, a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple at the exterior of the crucible was calibrated against an iron-sheathed thermocouple immersed in the melt and was thereafter used to regulate the melt temperature. All experiments were conducted at 1450°C with a probable error of 10°C. The alumina disks were constructed from pure re-crystallized alumina having a density of 3.7 g per cu cm (porosity approximately 6 pct). For each disk sample a 1-cm-diam alumina cylinder of known length (0.9 to 1.0 cm) was cemented into a ground seat at the end of a 1.27-cm-OD centerless ground alumina tube. The ends of the tube and cylinder were flush and served as the disk surface. When mounted in the apparatus the alumina tube was guided by tungsten carbide bearings and rotated by a variable-speed motor. The bearing and drive assembly could be raised and lowered in order to allow the sample to be quickly moved in and out of the melt. At the start of an experiment, a sample was preheated for several minutes directly above the melt, and then immersed in the middle of the melt to a depth of a in. and rotated for 1 to 12 min at speeds of 64 to 3270 rpm. The speed of rotation was measured by a hand tachometer. At the start and completion of each experiment, a melt sample was withdrawn with a cold copper rod and the alumina content was determined by chemical analysis. During individual experiments the alumina concentration of the melt changed by the order of 0.25 wt pct. Average melt compositions for individual experiments were used in the subsequent computations and were in the range between 0.12 and 4.3 wt pct alumina. The extent of dissolution was determined by sectioning the end of the sample and measuring the final length of the alumina cylinder with a microscope. The mining press, as well as certain federal and state bulletins, refer from time to time to the relative hazards that attach to loading bituminous coal by hand when compared with the so-called "mechanical loading" process. Much of the coal coming under the head of hand-loaded coal is won in part by the use of machinery; the coal-cutting machine is in general use, the electric power drill employed to a lesser extent. Therefore it may be said that the principal difference in the process employed, mechanical loading versus hand loading, lies in the fact that some type of loading machine is employed in the mechanical loading process to lift the coal from the face of the room, place or entry, after it is mined, placing it in the pit cars for transport to the tipple. It is a common practice to compute accident records on the basis of tons mined per fatal and per nonfatal accident, disregarding the fact that it is possible to produce by the aid of coal-loading machines the same daily, monthly and annual tonnage with a much smaller force than is required where the coal is all shoveled by hand. Inasmuch as the men who are released by the substitution of machinery for hand labor must find employment elsewhere, suffering some measure of hazard in their new occupation, we are of the opinion that the true relative hazard that attaches to the processes of mechanical loading and hand loading can be determined only by using as the basis of comparison "man shifts worked" or "hours of exposure" experienced per accident. The Union Pacific Coal-Co., beginning with the year 1929, undertook to maintain a true record of man shifts worked per compensable accident, giving equal weight to fatal and nonfatal accidents. Accidents lacking sufficient severity to come under the compensable terms of the Workmen's Compensation Act were not included in the compilation, the Act providing that "no compensation, except the expense of medical attention, shall be allowed for the first seven (7) days of disability, unless the incapacity runs beyond the period of twenty-one (21) days, in which case the compensation shall run from the time of the injury." AT the beginning of 1944 it was expected that the production of metallic zinc in the United States from domestic and foreign concentrates would exceed the 1943 figure though domestic production of concentrates was expected to drop below the 1943 rate, mostly in the Tri-State area. Imports of concentrates were estimated to more than take care of such deficiency. North American concentrate production, available for import to the United States or elsewhere during the year, was estimated at over 200,000 tons recoverable zinc content; South American at about 65,000 tons; Australian at about 50,000 tons. Production of both concentrates and metal in the United States, however, did drop, attributable in considerable part to man-power shortage in the industry. However production exceeded consumption, which fell off, and stocks of metal increased. These stocks have increased since the middle of 1942 but production and consumption are coming nearer to a balance. The A, B, and C premiums, which have played an important part in keeping up domestic production of concentrates, extend only to the middle of 1945 by present legislation. FIELD, Cleveland, Ohio (written discussion*.-)In equation 2, B is used to denote the ratio of bases (lime plus magnesia ) to acids (alumina plus silica) it being stated that this ratio gives more concordant results than the ratio either of bases to silica, or of lime to silica. I find, however, that, by making use of the ratio between true CaO (CaO by analysis minus sulfur calculated to CaS) to acids, equation 2 may he modified to agree with the observed facts within an average error of 0.0041 per cent. sulfur instead of 0.0045 per cent. The revised equation is s = 0.072 + 0.01835 - 0.00061 (t - 1400) - 0.0403B where B is the ratio of true CaO to Al2O3 Plus Si02, and the other symbols have the same significance as before. I would not appear to stress too much this slightly better agreement of the revised equation with the observed sulfur. Yet I believe that the use of this ratio of true CaO to acids is to be preferred, if for no other reason than the fact that it is more in harmony with the previous findings of the Bureau of Mines with regard to the effect of magnesia and other impurities on slag viscosity.1

INTRODUCTION The real problem is finding the "appropriate" financing sources by matching the risk and reward expectations of the various classes of investors and lenders. Generally, lenders who advance funds temporarily are interested in assuming only limited risk and conversely expect to earn only a limited reward. The equity owners on the other hand, are expected to take most of the risk of the enterprise, but should receive a reward commensurate with that risk. In particular they will receive the benefit of the company's increase in net worth over time. MINE DEVELOPMENT CYCLE Consider the development cycle of a mining project beginning with rank wildcat exploration (Figure 1) [ ] Just as different professionals must be utilized at different stages, so must different funding sources be used at different points in the pipeline. The operational characteristics of the Soderberg vertical spike anode are briefly discussed stressing the importance of the flow properties of paste in the fluid zone, the thermal shrinkage in the carbonizing zone, and the surface disintegration in the consumption zone. The requirements for paste recipe and binder quality are combined with design and operation of cell. A low temperature susceptibility of viscosity and low thermal shrinkage of paste together with a low microporosity of the binder coke are important properties. PRACTICAL application of Soderberg's idea of a selfbaking carbon electrode proved successful just before 1920. Shortly after, experimental work was started with the aim of developing a continuous electrode that could be adopted as anode in aluminium reduction cells. The intermittent operation of a large number of small prebaked anodes made the idea of developing a continuous anode for electrolytic production of aluminium especially tempting. Moreover, the electrode consumption in this process, even on a theoretical basis, is very high. Many installations were carried out in the 1930's and during the Second World War. During the tremendous post-war expansion of the aluminium industry, the Soderberg electrode has been steadily more widely adopted. Thus, today more than 60 pct of the Western World's output of aluminium is produced in cells with selfbaking anodes, see Big. 1. The quality of the anode paste of Sfiderberg elec- trodes is considered a major factor influencing the specific carbon consumption. The purpose of this paper is to survey the fundamental requirements which must be met in order to obtain good anode operation. We have limited this paper to a discussion of Elektrokemisk's research on the vertical spike type anode. I) FUNDAMEKI'TALS OF ANODE CARBON PERFORMANCE A) Brief Introduction. The only practical method for producing a conductive carbon anode of the size required is to form and carbonize a mixture of a carbonaceous binder and a precalcined dry aggregate coke. Epitaxial heterojunctions have been prepared by melting the lower -melting-point semiconductor of the interface between two dijferent semiconductors. when the temperature is reduced, the melted material recrystallizes, having alloyed into the higher -melting-point semiconditctor. The electrical and elcctro-optical properties of such single-crystal heterojunctions between GaAs and Gash and between p-type InAs and n-type Gash are the subject of this paper. The forward current varies as exp (AV), where A is substantially independent of temperatuve. For Gds-Gash heterojunctions at temperatures above, 370°K, if the current-voltage relationship were to he expressed as exp (qV/nkT), then n would he less than unity. The injection luminescence associated with forward current is, for the most part, characteristic. of the lower bandgap semicondutctor. These results can he explained by carrier injection into the lower bandgap semiconductor by tunneling through a barrier at the interface. The photovoltaic effect measured for incident photons having energies in the range between the bandgaps of the two semiconductors is much smaller than that produced by higher-energy photon The smallness of this between -the-gap photovoltaic response can he explained by the low probability for penetration of the barrier by the carriers produced in the smaller -bandgap semiconductor. THE technique of interface alloying has been used to produce single-crystal junctions between dissimilar semiconductors.' Oriented wafers are placed on a carbon heater strip, Fig. 1. so that semiconductor S1, which has the lower melting point, is supported by semiconductor S2. Electrical current passed through the heater strip produces a temperature gradient such that S2 is at a higher temperature than S1. As the temperature is raised the lower face of S1 begins to melt. Before the entire wafer can melt, however, the heater-strip current is turned off and, as illustrated in Fig. l. the melted portion recrystallizes, having alloyed into S2. Junctions have been fabricated by the above procedure between GaAs and germanium, between GaAs and GaSb, and between InAs and GaSb. Mroczkowski, Lavine. and Gatos have described the metallurgical and chemical aspects of the GaAs-Ge junction.2 The transition from GaAs to germanium is not monotonic and a portion of the recrystallized region consists of the GaAs-Ge eutectic. Since gallium is an acceptor and arsenic is a donor in germanium, since germanium dopes GaAs, and since the electrical properties of the GaAs-Ge eutectic have not been investigated, any interpretation of the electrical characteristics in terms of simple heterojunction theory would be incorrect. That the rectification of GaAs-Ge heterojunctions is not a property of the impurity doping of the GaAs or the germanium, but is most probably due to the impurity distribution in the recrystallized region, is clear from the fact that forward conduction occurred for all the GaAs-Ge interface-alloy junctions (whether they be n-n,n-p. p-n. or p-p) when the germanium was biased positively. The electrical characteristics of these GaAs-Ge heterojunctions will not be discussed further in this paper. Electron-beam microprobe analysis of GaAs-GaSb heterojunctions showed that the transition from arsenic to antimony atoms was without structure. and that the transition occurred within a 2 to 3 region.' In this paper we will describe the electrical properties of the GaAs-GaSb heterojunctions as well as electrical and electro-optical properties of the InAs-GaSb heterojunctions. A band model for the junction will be proposed which can explain these properties. ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES OF GaAs-GaSb HETEROJUNCTIONS After interface alloying. in preparation for the electrical and electro-optical experiments, ohmic contacts were made by conventional means. For example. Kovar tabs clad with tin were alloyed to n-GaAs or similar tabs clad with Au-Zn were alloyed to p-GaAs. The units were mounted and then etched. John M. Sharp, Jr. (Assistant Professor of Geology, University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo.)-Geothermal gradient and surface temperature data anomalies are potentially useful tools in mineral exploration, These data, however, may reflect a number of geologic and hydrologic processes as well as the thermophysical properties of the geologic materials. The author presents a relatively simple model which may be of value in mineral exploration. The lack of consideration of other processes, however, limits its usefulness. For instance, because of erosion or sediment deposition over geologic time the land surface must be considered a moving boundary in such a model. Evaluation of this effect coupled with annual surface temperature and thermal conductivity variations can result in temperature profiles such as shown in [Figs. 4 to 7]. These effects and others, such as ground-water movement," must be considered and filtered from the data before proper interpretation is possible. Another assumption which should have been discussed is, why were the observed mean surface temperatures not used for extrapolation of the gradients in [Figs. 4, 6, and 7?] Conductive heat transport responds to the actual boundary (land surface) temperature, not to theoretical temperatures in the absence of perturbations. Benfield presents a theoretical model for calculating perturbations in the geothermal gradient for erosion and sedimentation. The temperature (T) at any time (t) and any depth below the surface (x) is given by [ ] where T is the mean surface temperature, G, the geothermal gradient, v, the rate of erosion (or sedimentation),[ ], the long-term rate of change of T0, and k is the thermal diffusivity of the rock. Using the author's values and a rate of erosion of 1.54 cm per yr for a period of 10,000 yr, a thermal profile as shown in [Fig. 10] will be generated. A thermal diffusivity of 0.0164 sq cm per sec was used, corresponding to a thermal conductivity of 0.0082 cal per cm per sec per C. In [Fig. 11], a sediment deposition rate of 3.0 cm per yr for a period of 1000 yr was used to generate the subsurface temperature profile. A surface temperature of 24.3°C was used, as specified in [Fig. 9, 7], was set equal to zero for both cases. Superposition on the generated profiles in [Figs. 10 and 11] of the annual surface temperature variation perturbation (which may be calculated in a number of ways) will yield profiles similar to those in [Figs. 4 and 7]. Similar profiles can also be produced by regional ground-water flow. Models like the author's can be of value in mineral exploration. Other processes, however, which affect surface temperatures and gradients must first be considered, calculated, and filtered from the data if anything but the crudest qualitative interpretation is to be made. Robert C. Edmiston (Author's reply)-Professor Sharp has raised three objections to my interpretation of the subsurface temperature data I collected at Silver Bell. Two new metastable phases have been obtained in Au-Ge alloys by rapid cooling from the melt. One is of the hep structure with near-ideal axial ratio and may be considered a Hume-Rothery phase. The other has a complex tetragonal structure (a = 11.627Å and c = 22.191Å for the Au60Ge40 alloy) and may be looked upon as a superlattice made up of forty-four fee unit cells. Alloys with the tetragonal phase are charactevized by marked preferred orientation. The metastable constitution of the Au-Ge alloys is discussed with reference to the rate of cooling from the melt. THE Au-Ge equilibrium diagram features a rather deep eutectic near 27 at. pet Ge with a maximum solid solubility of 3.2 at. pet Ge in gold and is similar to the Ag-Ge, Ag-Si, and Au-Si diagrams.' The present study of the effects of rapid cooling from the melt on the structure of Au-Ge alloys constitutes an extension of similar investigations2-8 in this laboratory on alloys of noble metals with germanium and silicon. Nonequilibrium hep structures have so far been obtained by quenching Ag-Ge2, 3 and Ag-Si4, 5 alloys from the melt; an Au-Si alloy of approximately eutectic composition has been found6 to solidify in a noncrystalline state. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Twenty-nine alloys prepared from gold of 99.9+ pet and germaium of 99.999 + pet purity were investigated. The method of alloy preparation, the technique of rapid quenching from the melt, and the X-ray diffraction procedures were similar to those described previously.3, 4 Essentially, small sections (-20 mg) of thin alloy rods (-1 mm diam) were rapidly heated up to 1200°C in a graphite crucible under argon and the liquid alloy ejected by a helium blast onto a polished copper strip held on the inner periphery of a rotating wheel. The resulting thin foils were examined with or without the copper substrate in a G.E. X-ray Diffractometer or in a 114.6-cm-diam Debye-Scherrer camera. RESULTS Table I gives the constitution of liquid-quenched Au-Ge alloys, as estimated from intensities of X-ray reflections from the corresponding phases, viz., a (fee solid solution), ß (hep phase), ? (tetragonal phase), and diamond-cubic (dc) germanium. Despite unavoidable variations in the quenching rates, the proportions of the phases in different alloys were generally reproducible and stable at room temperature. There was no evidence of quenching strain, since the a doublets were well-resolved in high-angle Debye-Scherrer reflections in all cases except where stacking faults in the a fee and ß hep structures contributed to X-ray line broadening. The ß and ? metastable phases showed signs of decomposition to the equilibrium a phase and germanium only after a few hours annealing above 100°C. A few alloys around the eutectic composi-

NUCLEI that are formed during the recrystallization of a grain following plastic deformation generally have orientations that differ from the original. This aspect of recrystallization may be described in terms of orientation changes. It was shown previously, in an investigation on recrystallization in silicon ferrite,1 that the observed orientation changes were highly improbable on a chance basis, and that some mechanism must be involved. Analysis showed that the data could be satisfactorily classified into the smaller of two subclassesf of the 36 third- order twin transformations. No attempt was made at that time to classify the data within the special class of 12 third-order twin transformations, although results did indicate a greater probability for some of them to occur. A classification of this type would be more valuable, of course, with more data on orientation changes per old deformed grain. The present work fulfills this condition to some degree and also extends the scope of the investigation to include the effects of original orientation and the amount of plastic deformation. The effect of original orientation is of considerable interest because of the known effects of orientation on plastic deformation, particularly with regard to degree of fragmentation and the formation of de- formation bands, and because the orientations produced by deformation should influence the orientations obtained through recrystallization. Barrett and Levenson2 reported that single crystals of iron deformed in the range 82 to 97 per cent could be put into three general classes; namely, crystals in class I maintained a reasonably sharp single orientation, those in class 2 transformed into two distinct orientations, and those in class 3 changed into a large number of major and minor orientations. Something similar would be expected for silicon ferrite crystals, and verification of this for a few cases of types class I and class 2 deformation has been reported elsewhere3 for single crystals of silicon ferrite cold-rolled in the range 10 to 20 per cent. As an example of class 2 deformation, it was shown that a crystal of silicon ferrite cold-rolled in a {110} plane in a < 100> direction developed two layers, or deformation bands differing in orientation. When this happens it is possible to etch away one band and leave a single structure for use in studying the orientation changes that occur during recrystallization. when preferred crystal orientations are obtained in recrystallization, it is notparticularly necessary to evaluate groups of common orientation, as was done previously (ref. The X-ray Kossel-line method has been used preaioz~sly for measuring lattice parameters to accuracies of 1 part in 100,000.5 A second application of this method is described for determining the crystallographic orientation of a randomly positioned single-crysta1 spherical volume that can he as small as 50 µ in diameter, within accuracy limits of ±1/2 deg. The theory, experimental procedure, and interpretation of Kossel-line patterns and an experimenta1 verification of the predicted orientation relationship of the cph k and fee a Cu-Si phases are presented. This orientation relationship can be described as (111)a, (00.1)k; [110]a [11.0]k. In addition, the lattice parameter of the a phase was found to he a. = 3.62154 ± 0.00014Å. The Kossel-line method when used in conjunction with electron microanalysis is shown to he capable of providing a complete chemical and structural analysis of a given crystal. THE most easily accomplished methods for determining the orientation of a single crystal are variations of the Laue X-ray diffraction method. Although certain materials can be oriented to within ± 1 deg accuracy by observation of exterior macroscopic features, such as etch pits, cleavage faces, or growth features, the Laue method is generally preferred for routine laboratory application. Both back-reflection and transmission patterns are coordinated by appropriate reference charts and are plotted in terms of reflection plane poles (normals) on a stereographic projection. Orientation is deduced by relating the pole distribution (which is fixed by the crystallographic symmetry of the specimen) to two specified external reference directions. The Laue method has several limitations. 1) Orientation can rarely be determined to better than ±l deg accuracy. Principal errors involve inaccuracy in specimen-to-film distance, measurement confidence of individual Laue spots, and stereographic plotting. 2) Because of the indeterminacy of the X-ray wave length diffracted to a given spot, it is not possible to determine supplementary crystallographic data, such as interplanar spacings and lattice parameters. 3) The method is generally limited to specimens of cubic symmetry or to specimens of high symmetry and known structure. 4) The relatively large cross-sectional area of the incident X-ray beam generally precludes the measurement of relative grain orientation in a polycrystalline material.* _____ Several of these limitations can be overcome by application of the Kossel-line method, which has been previously employed for precision lattice-parameter determinations.&apos;-= For this method, a point source of divergent monochromatic X-rays is generated within the crystal by means of an incident electron beam. The divergent X-rays which fulfill the Bragg law are diffracted by the specimen and are recorded on a film placed either in transmission or back reflection. Analysis of the film yields a direct measurement of orientation and lattice-spacing values to an accuracy of ±1/2 pct. As analyses can be obtained from spherical specimen volumes as small as 50 µ in diameter, the method provides a means for structural analysis of second-phase or impurity precipitates within a given matrix. The primary limitation of the Kossel-line method is the requirement for an electron microanalyzer or similar apparatus capable of producing a finely focused electron beam. This paper is designed to present the theory, experimental procedure, and geometrical interpretation of Kossel patterns. The experimentally determined orientation relationship between the k and a phases occurring in the Cu-Si system and a precision measurement of the a lattice parameter are presented as a practical application of the method. THEORY OF KOSSEL LINES Divergent X-ray beam photography utilizes an effective point source of characteristic X-rays which, when diffracted from a single crystal, form numerous diffraction and absorption cones that are recorded on film.7 The cones generated from a source lying within the crystal are called Kossel lines.&apos; Although the X-ray scattering from a divergent point source contained within a crystal is described in terms of Laue dynamical theory,9 the directions of the diffracted spectra can be ade-

An investigation has been made of the ß(fcc) — a(hexagonal) transformation which occurs in lanthanum using both electrical resistivity and transmission electron microscopy techniques. It has been shown that the ß phase can be retained below the transformation temperature by rapid quenching but that the sample immediately begins to transform to the a phase. The transformation is observed to nucleate in the vicinity of inclusions. Based on the above observations, a detailed model of the transformation has been advanced which involves the nucleation of an extrinsic stacking fault bounded by a pair of Shockley partial dislocations in the vicinity of some heterogeneity, i.e., an inclusion. The stress field of the resultant dislocation pair acts to nucleate extrinsic faults in adjacent planes and leads quite naturally to the B-a conversion with a minimum of strain energy induced in the crystal. LANTHANUM possesses an fcc structure ß) (8) upon cooling transforms to a hexagonal modification (a) in much the same way as cobalt. The one exception, however, is that the stacking sequence of the closest packed planes in a La is ABAC ABAC, and so forth,1 whereas in cobalt it is ABAB, and so forth, i.e., hep. Mainly on the basis of transmission electron microscopy techniques, there seems to be little doubt that the 0 — a transformation in cobalt involves a dislocation mechanism2 although its exact nature still remains obscure. Although the ß - a transformation in lanthanum is somewhat more complex than that occurring in cobalt, it was thought that its very uniqueness would be helpful in understanding fcc — hexagonal transformations in general. Such a general understanding of these transformations is important since they represent what are perhaps the simplest of the martensitic class of transformations. The experimental techniques used were those of electrical resistivity and transmission electron microscopy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The lanthanum used in this investigation was prepared by the calcium reduction of lanthanum fluoride in a tantalum crucible under an argon atmosphere as described by Spedding et al. The residual calcium was removed by vacuum remelting in a tantalum container. Portions of the metal were then analyzed by emission spectroscopy as well as vacuum fusion. The amounts of the various impurities that were found are listed in Table I. A portion of the lanthanum ingot was swaged at room temperature into 0.030-in.-diam rod for the resistivity samples while the remainder was rolled into 0.010-in.-thick sheet for the transmission electron microscopy phase of this investigation. In order to eliminate the plastic deformation induced in the samples during fabrication, they were sealed in evacuated tantalum lined quartz capsules and annealed for 1 hr at 700° C. Specimen resistances were measured using the conventional "four-wire" technique described by MacDonald, 4 employing a type K-3 Universal Potentiometer and a standard 0.001-ohm resistor, both manufactured by Leeds and Northrup Co. By taking into account all of the possible errors in the apparatus, it was felt that the absolute resistivities of the approximately 0.87-in.-long specimens measured are reliable to 3 pct. Resistances from room temperature to 700°C were measured using a vacuum furnace. In order to avoid sample contamination by the thermocouple, chromel-alumel leads were spot-welded into a tantalum shield which in turn was welded to the lanthanum specimen. Resistances below room temperature were obtained by transferring the sample to a helium gas-filled quench tube and slowly dripping liquid nitrogen into a surrounding dewar flask. A steady reduction of temperature to about —190°C was completed in about 23 hr, and the resistances were measured at various temperature intervals. As will be shown shortly, rapid quenching from above about 350°C was sufficient to suppress the B -a transformation initially but subsequent annealing at lower temperatures leads to a partial ß --a conversion. To investigate this aspect of the transformation, the samples were suspended in the hot zone of a helium-filled furnace from which they could be rapidly dropped into the quench tube mentioned previously which was now

THE development of the natural resources of any district of any magnitude, inevitably gives rise to many problems off title, usually due to the greatly enhanced value of the land. The development of the mining industry in the Quapaw Agency has been no exception to this general rule. Our problems, how-ever, have not been many or particularly serious. The Quapaws were allotted and patents issued by the United States Government in 1895. These patents contained a restriction against alienation for a pe-riod of twenty-five years. The effect of the restric-tion was to prevent the Indian from selling, leasing, or in any way encumbering his land. The Govern-ment, in a paternalistic spirit, sought to teach the Indian thrift and industry and to insure him a place of residence. This is evidenced by the first Leasing Act passed by Congress, which permitted only incom-petents and those physically disabled to lease their land for either agricultural or mining purposes. The able-bodied Indian was denied the right to lease. It soon became apparent to the Government, how-ever, that this was a mistaken policy, and in 1897 a General Leasing Act was passed by Congress and it was under this act that the mining industry in the Quapaw Agency was developed. The act, reads as follows: "That the allottees of land within the limits of the Qua- paw Agency, Indian Territory, are hereby authorized to lease their lands, or any part thereof, for a term not ex-ceeding three years, for farming or grazing purposes, or ten years for mining or business purposes. And said al-lottees and their lessees and tenants shall have the right to employ such assistants, laborers, and help from time to time as they may deem necessary: Provided, That when-ever it shall be made to appear to the Secretary of the Interior that, by reason of age or disability, any such allottee cannot improve or manage his allotment properly and with benefit to himself, the same may be leased, in the discretion of the Secretary, upon such terms and conditions as shall be prescribed by him. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this are hereby repealed." It was the interpretation of this Act that gave rise to our first serious problems. It will be noted that the Act says that "allottees of land" within the limits of the Quapaw Agency are authorized to lease their land. Thus, the first question was presented by the use of the term "allottee," and the question was as to whether or not Congress intended to limit the Quapaw Indian to the leasing of his own allotment or did Congress mean that the term "allottee" was synonym-ous with "Indian" and intend to give the Indian a right to lease both his allotment and his inherited land and was an Indian without an allotment an "allottee" even though he was a member of the Qua-paw tribe and the owner of the Quapaw land by in-heritance, and not being an allottee, could he lease his inherited Quapaw land under the authority granted in this Act?

HAVING previously shown you how ores are found and mined, and also how they are prepared and disposed for smelting, and then how the blast furnaces and other furnaces are made for purging their earthiness, all this would be as nothing if I did not proceed to show you the method of smelting them. Therefore, in the present chapter I wish to show you how you must proceed in this very important operation, telling you all I have seen and also how much work with this kind of blast furnace I have done or directed. For this reason I tell you first to take by weight or measure the quantity of ore that you wish to smelt and, particularly if it is a kind that contains silver, break it into small pieces about the size of [52v] beans. If the ore had previously needed evaporation by fire or cleaning by washing, you will have had this done well and have had it properly prepared by a master sorter or others. A layer of this is arranged on a bed of planks, bricks, or flat stones in front of the blast furnace and its companion is placed on top, then a quarter part of galena or a third if you can obtain it. Then an equal part of crushed iron slag or slag from the same or different ore is added. These materials are spread in layers one above the other. When the blast furnace has been constructed as taught above, correct in all its parts, and is full of well-kindled burning charcoal, then fill it up with charcoal and admit water to the bellows machine. When you see that it is well kindled again from this wind and that the flames begin to come out forcefully on top, work it down with a little rake and fill it up again. Then the pannier is filled with new charcoal, the blast furnace heaped full, and another basketful of the said composition of ore is also put on top. Proceed in this way, continually adding charcoal and ore as long as you have any, or as long as you wish to keep up the work, maintaining the blast furnace always full, or continuing in this way until the bottom of the blast furnace is filled with melted materials. Decide this by judgment, or by seeing through the mouth of the tuyère where the wind of the bellows enters that they are level with this. Then with an iron tool open the hole that was left as an outlet in front of the blast furnace and allow all the metal with its slag to run out. These two things, flowing through the chan-

Sulphur is always present in mineral coal of every variety. In the oxidized state it may exist as sulphuric acid in combination with a base. In the unoxidized state it exists in combination with iron as bisulphide of iron. It is also supposed by some chemists to exist in unknown combinations with the organic elements of the coal. This supposition requires the demonstration as a fact that certain coals yield more sulphur than what may exist in a free state, or what belongs to recognized combinations, not only with the accompanying iron but with other inorganic bases abundantly occurring in coals, but which unfortunately are very rarely estimated. This practically as well as theoretically important question it is at present impossible to decide, simply for want of available thorough ultimate coal analyses including the ash. Such analyses, at the best imperfect, are luborious and intricate, and therefore seldom made, the much simpler proximate analyses, so-called, being resorted to by most chemists for technical purposes, and commonly substituted for more scientific work even in the laboratories of government surveys. And it is unfortunate enough that few ultimate analyses are extended to the composition of the ash, much less to its relation to the original constitution of the coal. Sulphur chiefly occurs in most coals in the form of yellow pyrites (pyrite) and white pyrites (marcasite), both minerals, characterized by differences in crystalline form and in physical properties as well as in color, but having the same chemical composition (FeS2). No coal is entirely free from one or both of these dimorphous forms of bisulphide of iron. It may be disseminated through the mass so as to be invisible, in plates or scales between the laminæ of the coal, or in conspicuous segregations or nodules, sometimes of considerable dimensions. Coals greatly differ as to the proportion of sulphur which they contain. They also differ as to the relative proportion in which its several forms of combination occur. Such qualitative and qnantitative disparities arc scarcely, if at all, more marked in separate coal seams of a uniform type than in different parts of one and the same coal seam, whether it be considered locally as constituted of several
