Flotation is an important example of a chemical process by which one solid may be separated from other solids in a mixture. In contrast to other chemical processes such as leaching and smelting, separation of solids by flotation is characterized by the establishment of contact among three phases. In froth flotation these three phases are the solid to be floated, an aqueous electrolyte solution, and a gas, usually air. The gaseous phase may be re- placed by an organic liquid phase or this organic liquid phase may be added deliberately as a fourth phase. To gain an understanding of the flotation sys- tem, it is therefore necessary to study the chemical and physical properties of surfaces and to establish the effect of changes in composition of the bulk phases on the nature of the three interfaces, solid-gas, solid-liquid and liquid- gas. With very few exceptions inorganic solids are completely wetted by the aqueous phase so that the first step in flotation is to replace partially the solid-liquid interface by a solid-gas interface. This displacement process is accomplished by the addition of suitable reagents to the aqueous phase. The resultant surface reaction leaves the solid surface with a hydrophobic film. Although the primary objective of these reagent additions is to alter the solid surface, chemical reactions between the added chemical species and those species derived from the dissolution of the solids are unavoidable. For a quantitative description of such reactions and for the determination of the feasibility of a proposed reaction, we rely on available thermodynamic data. The application of thermodynamic principles to flotation systems has contributed much to our understanding of flotation. The changes in thermodynamic properties such as free energy and chemical potential are accessible to experimental determination, and a knowledge of their magnitude allows us to develop and predict a chemical mechanism oy which a solid becomes floatable. In this chapter it will be assumed that the reader has a working knowledge of the general principles of thermodynamics and solution chemistry. A complete discussion of the physical chemistry of flotation must include a treatment of solubility relations, complex ionic equilibria, reaction potential, and the elements of electrochemistry, especially those dealing with reversible electrical cells. The principles related to all of these features of the flotation system will not be discussed in this chapter. The discussion will be concerned with the thermodynamics and electrochemistry of surfaces and the electrical double layer model of the interface.

In contrast with the previous year's activity, the California oil industry for 1938 showed a decrease in drilling, market demand, and discovery of new oil reserves, although there was an increase in oil production. Although additions to reserves from new fields and extensions were less than withdrawals during the year, reappraisals of discoveries in 1937 added to new discoreries during 1938 amounted to over 300,000,000 bbl. The following comparative statement shows the important changes in various phases of the industry: Throughout the year the storage situation became progressively more acute, owing principally to less Pacific foreign demand, and increased potential from drilling the newly discovered fields and pools (Fig. 1). California storage increased approximately 32,000,000 bbl. during 1938, most of which (approximately 18,000,000 bbl.) was heavy crude and residuum. The market demand for the year was around 600,000 bbl. per day. Because of the trend toward Diesel power for heavy transportation, the non-gasoline-bearing crudes arc fast becoming a drug on the market. New discoveries were instrumental in increasing the potential production of the state from 1,076,000 bbl. per day in January to an all-time high of 1,420,000 bbl. per day at the close of the year; although the indicated reserves of these new discoveries were not equal to the yearly withdrawal of 249,000,000 bbl. As of the end of 1938, the state was voluntarily curtailed about 58 per cent. As a result of prospecting during the year, six new fields were discovered, three fields were extended, and deeper zones were reached in five of the older fields.

THE amount or value of the precious metals consumed in dentistry is probably amazing to most people. It falls very little short of that which is consumed in jewelry. Inasmuch as the ultimate destination is in the human mouth, dental alloys enjoy some importance because life and health depend upon restorations made with them. Prosthetic dentistry has made wonderful progress in the last few years. The manufacturers who supply the metals also deserve commendation. This industry which deals with metals to go into people's mouths is comparatively new. There is no literature on the subject, and little or no precedent by which to be guided. It was only by close cooperation with the dentist or prosthetic technician that desirable physical properties were produced, as nearly as possible, in the metals which were available and permissible. It is true that there were and still are conflicting opinions among the dentists as to the physical properties they require. Sometimes they request the impossible, such as alloys which are exceedingly stiff and springy, yet will bend or adjust easily. Even in this latter instance, progress has been made by supplying methods of heat-treatment whereby metals may be softened or hardened at will. (Figs. 1 and 2.) The demands made upon manufacturers are extremely varied. They must supply metals of tensile strengths ranging from approximately 30,000 to 100,000 lb. per sq. in. and over. The latter metals must be workable and in many instances capable of extreme deformation. They must not be affected by mouth conditions, nor should they oxidize greatly when molten, at red heat, or during a soldering operation. In addition to physical specifications, color demands must also be met. The firm of which I have the most knowledge manufacturers 11,553 standard stock articles of precious metals, taking into consideration formulas, finenesses, grades, colors, gages, lengths, sizes and weights. If special demands are taken into consideration, the number would be in excess of 25,000. Wrought metals are manufactured in a great many alloys of different sizes and shapes, such as plate, bar, rod, wire, sheet, strip, mesh and foil. There are also other products of importance.

THE milling plant of the Alaska-Gastineau Mining Co. is located at the town of Thane, Alaska, on Gastineau Channel, 4 mi. south of Juneau and directly across the channel from the Ready Bullion mine of the Treadwell mines on Douglas Island. Previous to the organization of the Alaska-Gastineau Mining Co., in 1912, the milling was done at the stamp mill of the Alaska Perseverance Co. located at the mine in Silver Bow Basin. But the contemplated increase in production made it necessary to locate the mill on Gastineau Channel, as not enough water was available at the mine during the winter months, nor was there room for taking care of the large tonnage of tailings that would ultimately be discarded from the mill. CHARACTER OF ORE The gold and silver values occur in quartz lenses associated with pyrrhotite, galena, arsenical pyrites, and zinc blende. These lenses occur in large bodies of slate, schist, and metagabbro, which also carry some valuable metallic contents. With the essential low cost of mining, it was necessary to mine large bodies of low-grade material containing the high-grade streaks. Of the minerals, pyrrhotite, the magnetic sulfide of iron, is predominant, and galena is the next sulfide present in quantity. The gold occurs free and coarse and associated with the iron sulfide in its finer state. The silver occurs with the lead or is alloyed with the gold. A chemical analysis of the ore shows Silver 0.10 oz. Magnesia 0.4 per cent. Silica 59.7 per cent. Sulfur 1.2 per cent. Iron 5.2 per cent. Lead 0.1 per cent. Alumina 21.4 per cent. Zinc 0.2 per cent. Lime 5.0 per cent.

It is shown experimentally that, by making use of the coupled S-O reaction in ionic melts, it is possible to transfer slclJur or oxygen from a lozv to a high chemical potential through an ionic nzenzbrane. This uphill transfer of sulfur is accompanied by a counter downhill transfer of oxygen and vice versa. The Materials balance shows that the amoulits of sul -fur and oxygen lost or gained by one system are the same as those gained or lost by the other systenz — the two systejns being separated by an iofzic membmne. The systems used in these experi?nents were solid Mn-MnS-Mno and liquid Fe-S-0. Sufficient results were obtained Lo study the kinetics of the transfer and the indications are that the counter diffusion of sulfide and oxide iojzs in the membrane is the rate controlling process. WHEN an ionic oxide-melt reacts with an atmosphere containing sulfur and oxygen-bear ing gases the following reaction occurs: 1/2 S2 (gas) +O2- (melt) = S2- (melt) + 1/2 0, (gas) [1] Under the restrictions that i) electric conductance in the melt is purely ionic and ii) each constituent element in the melt does not change valence, the solution of an atom of sulfur in the melt will result in the evolution of an atom of oxygen, so that the electric neutrality is maintained. For a given temperature and melt composition, the equilibrium concentration of sulfur in the melt is determined by the ratio, po2 /ps2 , in the gas phase and not by the individual partial pressures of oxygen and sulfur. This has been demonstrated by a number of investigators, for example by Richardson and withers', Fincham and Richardson,la by St Pierre and Chipman,' and by Turkdogan and Darken.3 In his Howe Memorial Lecture for 1961, Darken discussed the possibility of uphill pumping of sulfur through an ionic membrane at the expense of oxygen. TO test the validity of this concept associated with coupled reactions, experiments were carried out in the following manner. A presintered mixture of Mn-MnS-MnO and prefused mixture of Fe-S-0, contained in platinum and iridium crucibles, respectively, and separated by a thin layer of soda-glass (to act as an ionic membrane), were placed side by side in an evacuated silica capsule and sealed. This was then kept at 1400°K for a required time to allow Reaction [11 to occur via the ionic membrane. When partial equilibrium is reached, the ratios Po2 /pS2, for systems on either side of the membrane, are equal and the flux of sulfur and oxygen through the membrane becomes zero, although the individual partial pressures po2 andp,, in these two systems may differ considerably.

In the analysis of comminution processes, it is necessary to have a detailed knowledge of such subprocesses as: transportation of the particles to the zone where they are stressed; the stressing of particles to a level high enough for breakage; removal of the fragments that are smaller than the limit size from the grinding zone; and prevention of agglomeration of the fine fragments. Breakage phenomena of particles is the most difficult subprocess to understand. It can be understood only by applying the principles of fracture physics to obtain information about the stress-strain field in particles which are loaded either by compression or by impact, and by using this theoretical knowledge to interpret experimental results obtained from single particle crushing studies. Two important features of the "Science of Communition" are discussed: the fracture physics and crushing under controlled conditions with special reference to single particle crushing, packed bed crushing, measurement of energy needed for fracture, fragment size distribution, and new surface area produced. The important features of these aspects are detailed, namely, energy balance of a crack, influence of environment, specimen size problems, and energy utilization in single particle crushing.

Synopsis.—A description of the working of the mills of this company and the metallurgical practice in vogue, by which a remarkably complex silver ore, averaging 54 oz. of silver per ton (run-of-mine ore), is treated to give a 95.66 per cent. extraction. The main features of the processes are: The cyanide amalgamation of the high-grade ore. The cyanide treatment of the low-grade ore, after extremely fine grinding and close classification, in a caustic soda solution. The use of a wet desulphurizing process to break up refractory silver minerals. The substitution of aluminum dust for zinc dust as a precipitant. The recovery and shipment of over 13,000,000 oz. of silver in bullion at 997 to 999 fine since this metallurgy was inaugurated, about 2.5 years ago. On the completion and successful operation of the mill to treat their high-grade ore,' the Nipissing Mining Co., under the general management of R. B. Watson, started a series of investigations of the possible treatment of the low-grade ore by the cyanide process, so that they would be in a position to market only silver bullion. These tests were run in July, 1911, on a large scale, by G. H. Clevenger, on an average mixture of Nipissing ore. The results obtained by a partiai amalgamation followed by cyanide treatment gave an extraction varying from 90 to 93 per cent. and were sufficiently encouraging to warrant Charles Butters, the company's Consulting Metallurgist, in recommending that the new low-grade ore mill under contemplation should be a cyanide mill, instead of a concentrator. The cost of such a mill, capable of treating 200 tons per day, to obtain a 90 per cent. extraction at a working cost of $3 per ton of ore treated, was estimated at $250,000. Computer analyses of the trafficability of copper mine tailings by four different commercially available BWEs were performed. A mathematical model incorporating the tailings' Coulomb strength parameters and the vehicles' geometry and operational characteristics was used to study the vehicle terrain interaction. The computer output provides the maximum tractive force (net drawbar pull) that each BWE can develop for given tailings conditions without bnngzng about a state of plastic failure in the tailings. Estimates of sinkage are also provided. The theoretical results for the BWEs and tailings studied compare favorably with the operating experience of similar BWEs used for remining gold tailings in South Africa. This lends some confidence to the validity of the mathematical model. The results of such analyses may be wed to evaluate, on a relative basis, which of a number of different machines would perform better than others under given conditions of a tailings deposit.

Presented in this paper is a summary of the results of experiments conducted in both the laboratory and the field during the past three years in connection with casing-perfora. tion problems. Included are studies of gun features that influence bullet performance and penetration, and studies of the effect of perforator bullets on casing and the neat cement in the annulus. Discussion and data are also presented relative to the accuracy of depth measurements in deep wells. Introduction It is a common practice in the oil industry to effect the completion of oil wells by setting and cementing casing through the producing horizons and perforating the section of casing opposite the desired interval by means of a gun lowered into the well on a cable or on the tubing. This practice has been followed for some time, and this method of completion has been given considerable study by the companies that render perforating service as well as by the oil companies that utilize their services. Through continued research on this subject, it has been possible to develop guns, bullets, and powder that will permit controlled firing at great depths, and penetration of as many as two strings of casing. It is the object of this paper to present the results of studies made of gun perforating in both the field and the laboratory. These studies were made to determine the factors that affect penetration of the bullet, burring of the casing, accuracy of depth measurements, and other items. It is hoped that by presenting the results of these investigations a better understanding may be obtained of certain of the factors involved in gun perforating and further investigation of the subject will be prompted. Subsurface Tests A well approximately 9000 ft deep, which was being prepared for abandonment, was selected for subsurface tests of gun-perforating experiments, In preparing the well for the experiment, 51/2-in. casing in the hole was pulled and racked in the derrick. A test section of pipe, which consisted of 65 ft of 5-in. 18-lb J-55 casing centered inside 7-in. 28-lb N-80 casing, was placed in the derrick corner and the annulus between the two pipes was cemented from the bottom up with 161/2 lb per gal neat cement, which was mixed and displaced with a cementing truck in the usual manner. After the cement had been allowed to harden for about a week, the test section was lowered into the hole on the 51/2-in. casing to a depth of 6600 ft by casing measurements. The hole was filled with drilling fluid weighing 10 lb per gallon. A perforating company was called to perforate the pipe, but was not advised that an experiment was being conducted. The company was asked to check the total depth (to cross pins in the bottom of the test section), then to raise the gun a given distance and fire a given number of shots with 1/2-in. bullets, pick up another distance and fire a given number of 3/8-in

The use of operation research and computer techniques in the mineral industries continued to gain acceptance during 1966. There are generally at least five sources of information for researchers and practitioners in the field: (1) Technical periodicals like MINING ENGINEER- ING, Mining Congress Journal, etc. (2) Proceedings of the Symposium and Short Course on Computers and Operations Re- search in Mineral Industries, held last year at Penn. The effect of machine stiffness on discontinuous flow and fracture of the 2024 aluminum alloy was studied in tension at 4.2OK. An increase of machine stiffness was found to decrease the amount of elongation and drop in load during discontinuous flow, thereby postponing fracture to larger strains and higher stresses. The possibility of utilizing stiffened tools in deformation processing to suppress shear fracture originating from unstable flow was indicated. The problem of nucleating discontinuous flow and the role of the effective mass of the system in discontinuous flow were also considered. AT low temperatures the plastic flow of metals is often discontinuous, with sudden load drops and elongations.1,3 Basinski1,4 has presented strong evidence that discontinuous flow, at least in aluminum alloys, occurs under nearly adiabatic conditions. During testing the load may drop suddenly and flow become localized when the thermal softening, due to heat generated in plastic straining, is greater than the strain and strain-rate hardening. This instability criterion is more easily satisfied at low temperatures because 1) the volume specific heat is reduced so that relatively large temperature increases are possible in straining, and 2) the flow stress is relatively temperature-dependent. The important role of adiabatic shear in ductile fracture processes has been emphasized,5-1 and consideration has already been given to the influences of thermal and mechanical properties on the tendency of a material to undergo adiabatic shear.17677 By focusing attention on how the mechanical loading system influences low-temperature discontinuous flow, additional insight into adiabatic shear and its effect on fracture may be gained. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Because of its low thermal conductivity, the 2024 aluminum alloy exhibits a highly consistent discon- tinuous-flow behavior at 4.2°K and was therefore chosen as the material for study. Machined specimens of 0.113 in. diam and 1.125 in. gage length were solution heat-treated at 490°C for 3 hr, quenched into cold water, and immediately immersed in liquid nitrogen until just before testing. Testing was done at 4.2°K by immersion in liquid helium at a crosshead drive rate of 0.03 in. per min. As normally used (hard-machine basis), the spring constant of the testing machine was k = 25,000 lb per in. By inserting beam springs in series with the specimen, this value could be lowered by a factor of about 100. Details can be found elsewhere.? As a result of variable machine stiffness, the actual strain rate ranged from about 3 x 10 5 to 3 x 10-4 per sec from one test to another, as well as within any one test. However, preliminary tests had established that the tensile curves were not altered significantly by this strain-rate variation. Fig. 1 shows a typical load vs plastic-elongation curve for a solution heat-treated 2024 aluminum alloy specimen pulled in the standard hard machine (k = 25,000 lb per in.) at 4.2"K. The elastic extension has been subtracted. Plastic flow proceeded smoothly from yielding at approximately 22,000 psi (load = 220 lb) to a strain of about 4 pct at which point the flow became discontinuous. The magnitude of the load drops as well as the plastic elongation per drop increased with increasing strain until the specimen finally broke abruptly. During recent years, oil producers have observed with interest the practical success which has attended the application of water as a medium for displacement of oil from its reservoir sands in the Bradford field of northern Pennsylvania and southern New York. Here, according to various authorities, additional recoveries of frorn 2,000 to 12,000 bhl. of oil per acre have heen secured by this method, after ordinary flowing and pumping. rnethods of production had practically reached the lower limit of economic operation. Notwithstanding the success which has attended the practical use of the flooding process in the Bradford field, oil producers in other regions are skeptical of its value when applied under physical conditions differing markedly from those which characterizc the Bradford field. Its usc would probably he construed as illegal in most of the oil-producing states. This general relnctance on the part of oil producers in other regions to accept the flooding process is due in large part to lack of infor-n~ation regarding the factors that influence its operation and efficiency. With the purpose of clarifying to some extent the issues involved, and of determining when the flooding proccess may or may not beeffee-tivcly ernployed, the writers have conducted a serics of laboratory exper-imentments under carefully controlled conditions, designed to indicate, the influence of various physical, chemical arid lithologic factors. These experments have not been conducted under conditions identical with those which exist at depths far below the earth's surface, so that direct quantitative comparisons with field results are not justified, hut it is believed that the experimental results at least warrant qualitative inter-pretations that may he applied to field conditions. The methods employed in the conduct of these experiments are briefly explained, and the results, together with the conclusions based thereon, arc presented. Exploration was active in East and East Central Texas during 1944. Ten oil fields were discovered during the year, of which four show promise of development. The discovery wells of the Sand Flat and Tyler, South fields were drilled to a depth greater than 10,000 ft., and the latter field now produces from the Pettit at a depth of 9890 ft. The Sand Flat well was plugged back to the Paluxy. The other two fields are Glen Rose producers near 8000 ft. The Pickton field produces from the Bacon Lime and Winnsboro from the Rodessa section. The Eylau field, Bowie County, was significant as the first Smackover production in Texas. Magnolia drilled a test in the Concord field, which topped salt. The most extensive and significant development in the district was the Carthage gas-condensate field. It expanded from the 8000 acres of last year to an estimated 190,000 acres, or about 300 sq. miles, and is not defined as yet. The first oil production in the Carthage area was made from the Travis Peak in 1944 in the Rogers Lacy's Cameron Lumber Company well No. I, on the northwestern side of the field. The New Hope field, Franklin County, scored the largest number of completions during 1944 with 24, bringing its total number of wells to 27. Two more pays were opened and produced as dual completions with the older horizons. The Manziel field, Wood County, had 19 new wells added during the year, for a total of 29, while the Pittsburgh field, Camp County, reached a total of 23 wells by completing 14 new ones. Material shortages and drilling restrictions dropped the total number of producing wells completed in the district from 171 during 1943 to 141 for 1944. Abandonments increased from 531 during 1943 to 609 for 1944. Of this number, 479 were in the East Texas field. Subsidy payments had very little effect in the district and it was mostly a few of the old fault-line fields that had any wells to fall within the requirements for subsidy payments. The prices of crude oil remained constant in the district except for increases as a result of subsidy payments. Production and Probation Wartime demands called for increased allowables for many fields, consequently the condensate and oil production for 1944 increased to 190,016,180, which is up 6.9 per cent over 1943. The East Texas field, of course, remained the principal producer of the district, accounting for 134,768'499 bbl. during the year, or 71 per cent of the district total production of condensate and oil. The field topped its own 1943 production by 4.8 per cent and became the first field in the world to produce 2 billion barrels of oil. The Hawkins field remained the second largest oil producer in the district, with 13,317,088 bbl. for the year, a drop of 6.8 per cent from 1943, while Van field was third with 11,635,708 bbl. The

The Tooele plant of the Internationa1 Smelting & Refining Co. is situated at the mouth of Pine canyon, Tooele county, Utah. It is connected with the main line of the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad by the Tooele Valley railway, and is about 7 miles from Tooele Junction. Fig. 1 is a general view of the plant. The copper plant has been in operation since July, 1910, arid the first blast furnace at the lead plant was blown in on Feb. 29, 1912. The location of the plant was selected on sloping ground with the idea of using gravity to the fullest extent and thus keeping labor at a minimum. Practically the entire plant is constructed of steel, reinforced concrete, and brick. Bingham ores, both lead and copper, are received over the Utah Consolidated Aerial Tramway. Maurer's review1 summarizes quite thoroughly the various theoretical developments and experimental findings that contribute to the knowledge of rock mechanics in drilling. This discussion supplements Maurer's paper by including generalities that either have been incompletely treated in his review, or formulated from new considerations by the discussant and from hitherto unpublished experimental data. These generalities are associated with the observation that all mechanical methods of rock drilling essentially comprise a sequence of indexed, concentrated loadings on the bottom of the hole being drilled. A concentrated loading is defined as a mechanical loading by a tool that contacts at any one time only a small fraction of the surface of the body being worked and penetrates only a small fraction of the body thickness. The surface in this application is the bottom of the hole. The deformation of ductile material by concentrated loading has received considerable attention because of the importance of indentation tests for measuring hardness of metals. Some of the generalities involved in concentrated loadings on ductile materials apply also to concentrated loadings on more brittle materials such as rock. Among these generalities is the applicability of similitude considerations to scaling laws and to force-displacement and energy-volume characteristics for tools of various shapes, as summarized by Tabor.2 Vork on the flow and fracture behaviors of glass loaded with pyramidal and spherical indenters is reviewed by Douglas.3 Maurer refers to the work of Evans and Murrell on wedge loadings on coal and on mixtures of pitch and sand. It is evident from Maurer's paper that a considerable portion of the studies of rock mechanics in drilling, such as crater formation experiments, has involved concentrated loadings on rock.

Interest naturally attaches to fissuring and subsidence of the earth's surface, whatever the cause may be, and the induced movement and fissuring of the impervious strata overlying an oil sand is of even greater practical importance because of its bearing upon the recoverability of the portion of the oil not already extracted or extractable by ordinary production methods. It is probably true that significant ground movement induced by oil production occurs only in oil fields in relatively young formations, where the oil comes from incoherent or only slightly cemented sands and oil-soaked clays, but inasmuch as a great proportion of our "gusher" wells produce from "running" sands and yield a large part of the total oil output, it seems worth while to make an effort to inspire the collection and recording of data indicating the nature and magnitude of oil-field subsidence, both surface and subsurface. Goose Creek Field The single known instance in which the nature and magnitude of the surface subsidence incident to petroleum withdrawal has been accurately ascertained is that in the Goose Creek oil field of Texas, described by Pratt and Johnson.' There subsidence caused the submergence of a considerable area within the oil field, and, because the title to the naturally submerged lands of Texas rests in the State, it became necessary to determine whether the submergence was due to natural or artificial causes. A detailed study revealed that the sunken area conformed very closely to the limits of the productive oil field and that the cumulative depression over an eight-year period ranged from zero at the margin to 3.25 ft. at the center. Specitlrens of the Al-Ge eutectic alloy have been frozen unidivectionally at rates between 2.5 x 10-6 and 2.5 x 10-4 cm per sec and the structure examined by optical and X-ray methods. There is no epitaxial relationship between phases, the aluminum having random orientation and the germanium a preferred (011) fiber textuve. Lamellar colonies which are BINARY eutectic alloys occur between either silicon or germanium with the metals aluminum or silver. common in this alloy are constructed from axial and nonaxial (111) plates of germanium which are related by a variety of twin configurations. Irregular or globular regions of the microstructure are composed of continuous single crystals of each phase, the germanium being heavily twinned. There is limited solid solubility in these systems, and the eutectic phases all involve diamond cubic with fcc crystal structures. In the microstructures of these eutectic mixtures the silicon and germanium crystals exhibit an almost infinite variety of shapes which are notably sensitive to
