The Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Co., Limited, is in the town of Asbestos, situated approximately 100 miles northeast of Montreal and about the same distance southwest of Quebec, in Richmond County, Quebec. Mining operations were started in 1881 on outcrops on a hill, as a side-hill cut, followed by a second and third cut. This development was the forerunner of the present large open-pit operations, the mine now ranking as the largest open-pit asbestos mine in the world. Operations were first carried on by hand, then by horsepower and later by stem cableways. By 1924 the derrick spans, 2000 ft. or more long, became unwieldy. To overcome this, and also to eliminate hand labor as much as possible, steam shovels and railroad haulage were introduced. The steam shovels were replaced in 1928 by larger electric shovels of the full-revolving type. The Ore Body The ore body is a serpentinized peri-dotite rock mass. The chrysotile fibers form a network of veins throughout, varying from microscopic width to two or more inches measured across the veins (Fig. I). These veins may be continuous for a few or many feet; they may increase or decrease in width within a few feet. The veins in which the fibers occur per- pendicular to the veins are known as cross fiber. Those in which the fibers lay parallel to the veins are known as slip fiber. THE attention of physicists and metallurgists has been directed toward the study and explanation of the deformation textures in metals for the past 15 years. In 1920 N. Uspenski and S. Konobejewski1 were first able to show that the symmetrical X-ray diffraction effects that had been previously reported by E. Hupka2 and others in metal foils were caused by a directed arrangement of the crystallites. Since then, the systematic study of textures resulting from the application of the pure forces of tension or compression to polycrystalline materials hag been supple-mented by many investigations on deformed single crystals, which have greatly added to our knowledge of deformation. However, despite the valuable information secured from these comparative studies only four investigations upon cold-rolled single crystals of any of the face-centered cubic metals have been reported in the literature. This lack of quantita-tive data is especially unfortunate because of the much greater practical significance of rolling textures and their effects in both cold-rolled and annealed materials. This investigation was undertaken for the purpose of specifying the deformation of rolled single crystals in the hope that such information might later facilitate the explanation of polycrystal-line textures.

THIS is not simply the story of how a water filled shaft was developed into a million-ton- a-year producing mine in the space of four critical years, although it is reason enough for telling it, but it is also the saga of an engineering achievement in which knowledge nurtured by years of experience in coal and ore mines was blended together and the best from each type of mining selected. The entire system of mining was detailed on maps by the mining engineering department before the shaft was unwatered, and subsequent development followed these plans nearly to perfection. The selection of machinery was particularly critical as it was necessary to push production from only a few headings in the early stages of development and metal mine machinery was being used in a coal panel-system of mining.

THUM,* Salt Lake City, Utah (written discussion?).-While the present paper is confined exclusively to the microstructure of fusion welds, it may be of interest to draw attention to certain appearances existing in resistance welds such as spot or butt-welded joints produced by the Thomson process. For instance, a butt weld between two pieces of carbon tool steel (carbon about 0.90 per cent.) will show concentric ellipsoids of the various materials from pearlite to martensite. The surfaces of demarcation are quite well defined, the center of the ellipsoid being at the intersection of the axis of the piece and the plane of the weld. Often these unannealed welds show a troostitic center; evidently this core was not quenched as rapidly as the surrounding shell. Such specimens are beautiful samples for instruction purposes. An annealed butt weld of this kind will show a very well defined central ellipsoid of decarburized, materials. It is interesting to consider the reason why this change takes place. It must be understood that the heat is on the metal for a very short time, possibly 30 sec. It is therefore evident that the decarburization, or migration, of the carbon takes place with extreme rapidity. Since no blowholes are evident in a well-made butt weld, the deoxidizing air and the products of combustion must migrate with the highest speed; second, the carbon might migrate back into the stock; or, last, a large proportion of the pearlite may be extruded with the hot metal, which forms a fin at the plane of weld. Examining these possibilities in detail, it is not probable that such deep-seated decarburization, extending with maximum effect to the very center of a 2-in. round bar, is done by reaction with the oxygen of the air. This would postulate entrance of oxygen and egress of carbon oxides in large quantity without leaving behind traces in the form of oxides or

Single crystals of Pbl-xSnXTe have been grown from The melt under liquid B2O3 using the Czochralski technique. The PbTe-SnTe crystals were grown from near-stoichiometric melts and from melts with slight deviations from sloichiometry. Crystal growth rates ranging from 1 mm per hr to 1 cm per hr were employed, the latter being generally used. Several investigations were performed to characterize the single crystals grown In this study. The phase diagram of the PbTe-SnTe system was examined. X-ray analyses verified the single-crystal character of the crystals, and powder pattern lattice parameter determinations showed that Vegard's law was followed within the limits of the experimental error. The as-grown crystals were p-type with apparent carrier concentrations of -8 x 1018 to -8 x 1020 carriers per cu cm. Hall coefficients, resistivities, and carrier mobilities were determined as a function of composition. Dislocations were revealed by an electrolytic etch, and the crystals were found typically to contain 2 to 4 x 105 dislocations per sq cm. Microhardness measurements were performed; no maximum in the Vickers hardness us composition curve was seen. Mass spectrometry was used for impurity analyses, and the crystals were found to contain 1 to 2 x 1017 total p-type impurities per cubic centimeter. Distribution coefficients were calculated for the major impurities which were Na, Mg, Al, Si, Cl, and Zn. RECENTLY interest has been stimulated in the preparation and characterization of many alloys of the binary compound semiconductors. This interest is due primarily to the almost unlimited possibilities of adjusting the semiconducting characteristics of these materials by varying the alloy compositions. One alloy system which has been receiving extensive investigation is the PbTe-SnTe system, since these alloys show promise of being useful as emitters and detectors of electromagnetic radiation in the spectral range of 8 to 14 µ. This paper reports on the growth of PbTe-SnTe single crystals by the Czochralski technique and investigations of the general properties of these crystals. The phase diagram of the PbTe-SnTe system was investigated so that specific alloy compositions could be attained. I) CRYSTAL GROWTH The PbTe-SnTe single crystals were pulled from the melt using the Czochralski technique. Generally, the crystals were grown from near-stoichiometric melts, although special growth runs were made from both lead-rich and tellurium-rich melts. Growth of single crystals from up to 5 pct lead-rich melts presented no problems; however, melts with tellurium in excess of -1 pct caused volatilization problems which generally made crystal growth impossible. All melts were prepared from high-purity materials as follows: 1) lead— 6 N— Cominco (Cominco Products, Inc., Spokane, Wash.); 2) tin—5N—Cominco; and 3) tellurium— 5N+— American Smelting & Refining Co., Plainfield, N.J. No further purification of materials was undertaken in this study. The elements were reacted at -1000°C in a vacuum-sealed silica tube for a few hours, a gentle rocking action being used to ensure thorough reaction. The cast ingots were then transferred to a silica crucible for crystal growth. A schematic diagram of the growth apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The Vycor tube is sealed at both ends by O-ring flanges so that a vacuum or a positive pressure may be maintained in the growth chamber. The East Texas area includes the northeast 38 counties of the state of Texas. It covers all, and extends beyond, the borders of what is commonly described as the East Texas Basin. It is one of the most important oil and gas-producing areas of the Mid-Continent Province. It includes four important oil fields—Van, East Texas, Cayuga and Long Lake— and the recent extension of Rodessa field into Cass County, Texas, may prove to be of major size. Four commercial gas fields are in this area— Bethany, Waskom, Cayuga and Long Lake. Up to January, 1936, all of the oil has been produced from the Upper Cretaceous formations, and most of that from the basal member, the Woodbine sand. Gas is produced from both the Upper and Lower Cretaceous formations. Development in Fields East Texas Field.—This field continued to dominate the drilling and production situation throughout the United States. There were 4036 wells completed in this field during 1935; that is, 365 more wells than were completed during 1934. Drilling activity was due to close spacing of wells and the addition of 10,000 acres to the field. The field is now drilled to a density of one well to 6½ acres, which is certainly more wells than necessary for economic production of the field. The close spacing of wells is due mostly to the type of proration, which is per well allowable based on a potential test, and does not take acreage into consideration, and also to the numerous small acreage tracts such as town lots and excess strips. The field now has 19,519 producing wells. The allowable production for the field during 1935 was 161,118,659 bbl.; estimated production, including illegal or "hot oil," was 174,200,150. The illegal production of oil gradually decreased throughout the year, until an estimated low was reached of 20,500 bbl. daily during the months of November and December. The price of oil remained at $1.00 per barrel throughout the year. As stated, about 10,000 acres were added to the field during the year, making a total of 128,000 productive acres. Operating properties of Bancroft Mines Ltd. are in the Western Province of Northern Rhodesia, just south of the Katanga border and at the north- western end of the Rhodesian Copperbelt. The concentrator, above, was commissioned in January 1957 to treat 150,000 tons per month of ore derived from the nearby Kirila Bomwe South orebody, and the Konkola orebody eight miles away. The Konkola orebody is comparatively low grade and mining was discontinued there in early 1958. Development work on the new mine at the Kirila Bomwe North orebody commenced in 1959. Today, the plant treats approximately 150,000 tons of ore per month from the Kirila Bomwe South orebody and development ore from the north orebody. Ultimately, 100,000 tons of ore per month will be produced from the north orebody.

NATURAL carbon dioxide has recently been exploited in the United States in consequence of oil and gas developments in the Western States and the growing demand by transcontinental and transoceanic shippers for solid carbon dioxide. The discovery by drilling of commercial deposits resulted in consideration of its geographic and geologic distribution and occurrence. Its wide distribution in nature is evidenced by its occurrence in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. The question of origin of carbon dioxide involves consideration of theories similar to those concerning natural hydrocarbons, although available evidence favors an inor-ganic rather than an organic source. Areas favorable to development of commercial production appear to be those in proximity to igneous rocks or in the vicinity of decadent volcanic activity, where, it has long been known, the gas is evolved either free or dissolved in the waters of furnaroles, geysers or mud pots. Structure contour maps are presented showing the Wagon Mound anticline in New Mexico and the Farnham anticline, Utah. A well drilled on the latter supplies gas to a 20-ton plant manufacturing solid carbon dioxide at Wellington, Utah, on the Denver and Rio Grande R.R., whence it is shipped to surrounding territory and to the West Coast. Before funds are invested in a plant for the manufacture of liquid or solid carbon dioxide, whether supplied by wells or springs, an effort to ascertain the volume of gas available is advisable. The use of present methods of estimation of gas reserves with modifications to account for the quantity absorbed by any water present in the produc-ing formation is recommended. The Farnham anticline is used as an example and computations are made of the probable volume of gas originally present in the struc-ture. No attempt was made to compute reserves in the Niland area, California, for the reason that in such areas it is believed the volume is indeterminate.

AN interesting effect has been observed in the vacuum etching of titanium in the high temperature ß phase. Using a high vacuum annealing furnace, operating at less than 2x10-6 mm with a tubular titanium liner, it has been found possible to etch polished metallographic specimens at different temperatures between room temperature and 1000°C without contamination or increase in hardness.' Heat etching of titanium has been reported by other workers,' but the following example is of interest as an experiment under high vacuum in the absence of any contamination. Two polished specimens of iodide-processed titanium are placed at different positions along the axis of the furnace corresponding to temperatures of 900" and 800°C above and below the a-ß transus. The specimens are then raised to these temperatures and annealed simultaneously for 3 hr under the same high vacuum conditions. After cooling and withdrawing the specimens, their surfaces are photographed without further treatment. Figs. 1 and 2 show the results for the 800" and 900°C specimens, respectively. Fig. 1, corresponding to a vacuum etch in the a region, shows a typical equiaxed structure with what appears to be a slight shift of grain boundaries. Fig. 2, corresponding to a vacuum etch in the ß region, shows an equiaxed type of structure with the growth of striations in certain grains. The striations are only superficial, as a light polish and chemical etch restores the clean equiaxed structure. The vacuum etch, occurring as it does above the a-ß transus, records the state of the metal in the ß phase by means of the surface relief produced by the selective evaporation of metal from different grains; the metal itself reverts to the equiaxed a on cooling. The nature of the ß etch" (Fig. 2) suggests that, in transforming from the close-packed-hexagonal a to the body-centered-cubic ß lenticular-shaped laminae are formed parallel to common planes of the two structures. This would explain why some grains appear to be unaffected by the etch. The technique has interesting possibilities in the investigation of the mechanics of high temperature transformation. The following presentation is more a summation of observations made and conclusions drawn over a period of three to four years than a report of experiments made with a definite objective. Tests were made, of course, to verify hypotheses, but the large mass of data was collected incidental to other work. Lack of space forbids the presentation of more than a few of those data. On the other hand, it is unfortunate that some of the most illustrative examples are not available. The work is admittedly incomplete but is presented in the hope that it will stimulate further work along a similar line. The answers to many of the questions left unanswered by this paper will be found only after long and painstaking study, such as is scarcely possible in a commercial laboratory where problems of immediate importance consume most of the time. It is also hoped that this study will in some measure throw light on some of the dark spots of steelmaking, and help to clarify some of the annoyingly vague references to "good practice." Only cast steel was studied and the conclusions apply to cast steel, but it is the authors' opinion that the quality of rolled or forged steel is largely dependent on the quality of the ingot, which is a casting. Although this discussion deals almost entirely with inclusions, it is important that the reader understand that only those natural inclusions which owe their origin to the solubility of certain materials in steel and to the chemical reactions of steelmaking are considered. Accidental inclusions, such as entrapped particles of slag, nozzle, runner, or mold arc outside its province and are not considered. Such accidental inclusions are always dangerous and should be carefully avoided. Relation between Ductility and Nonmetallic Inclusions In September, 1928, an acid electric furnace was put into operation at the Indiana Harbor plant of the American Steel Foundries. Following the usual practice, aluminum additions were made in order to obtain sound castings. Immediately the problem of low ductility arose. Previous to that time, only open-hearth steel was produced, and, aluminum being used rarely in that steel, there had been practically no trouble with low ductility in the lower carbon range.

Chemical and mineralogical data on 25 apatitic phosphate ores of diverse origins from commerical deposits around the world were widely variable. From 14 to 18 chemical constituents of each sample were determined, and each sample contained four to ten mineral phases. Altogether there were 34 different mineral phases, many of which occurred in only one sample. Samples contained varieties of francolites, fluorapatites, and mixed hydroxyfluorapatites. The apatite compositions calculated from chemical data showed that certain types of substitutions were characteristic of different apatite varieties, but every variety had some degree of substitution of (CO3)2- for (PO4)3-, and the P205 contents of the apatites ranged from 35.1 %for a North Carolina apatite to 41.9% for a Missouri apatite. In a concentrate with a grade of 32% P2O5, the North Carolina sample should contain about 8.7% gangue and the Missouri sample about 23.7% gangue. To optimize the digestion process of a phosphate ore, it is necessary to consider the dissolution behaviors of different mineral phases during acidulation and their possible effects on chemical properties of a fertilizer intermediate. In the production of wet-process acids or superphosphates, acidulation of certain minerals may cause foaming and formation of sludge, filtration, corrosion, and handling problems.

The basic mechanism of fatigue is studied in annealed a brass subjectecl to alternating torsion at room temperature, 100°, 200°, 300°, and 400°C, and in air. It is shown that the slip-zone micro-cracking which characterizes fatigue damage produced by small amplitudes at room temperature is progressively replaced by grain boundary cracking at elevated temperatures, replacement being complete at 400°C. Replacement occurs not because slip activity decreases hut because slip movements at elevated temperatures cease to concentrate in narrow zones and instead disperse. Decrease of amplitude at 400°C through permitting longer lives of specimens before fracture actually causes in- MOST studies of fatigue at elevated temperature have been concerned with data for design. Observations on the basic mechanism of fatigue have been largely incidental, though they have led to the interesting inference that this mechanism has features in common with that of creep.' This paper is concerned primarily with the mechanism itself. Advantage has been taken of mater- crease in pain boundary damage, an anomaly attributed to the greater difficulty at elevated tempwature of starting and propagating a crack. Surface corrosion was most pronounced along slip bands but since at elevated temperatures the slip hands showed no cracking the surface corrosion did not appear to influence onset and early spread of fatigue damage. Similarly the type of fatigue damage produced at room temperature by cyclic strain at large amplitudes, characterized by irregular mi-crocracks at zones between disoriented regions in a grain, was also replaced by mainly grain boundary cracking at elevated temperature, though not so completely. ials and procedures known to show readily how fatigue affects the microstructure of a metal at room temperature, so that direct comparison might be made with what the same procedures show when the material is subjected to fatigue deformation at higher temperatures. 1) MATERIAL This was 70/30 a brass, used extensively in previous studies at room temperature.' Single-crystal thin films of molybdenum have been grown. by the pyrolytic decomposition of molybdenum hexafluoride in a hydrogen ambient on various insulating substrates at temperatures front 650° to 900° C. Single-crystal discs of various orientations of magnesium aluminate spinel, a aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, and the natural facets of beryllium oxide were all observed to exert epitaxial control on the depositing film. Determinations of the crystallographic relationships existing between film and substrates have been made, using X-ray diffraction three-circle goniometry and Laue back-reflection techniques. Using these data, crystallographic overlays have been constructed which suggest a possible interfacial geometry on the basis of a match between metal deposit atoms and metal ion sites in the substrate. A continuing program has been in effect in the Auto-netics Laboratories over the past several years aimed at the development of electronic materials in new and useful forms using chemical vapor deposition techniques. During the course of these investigations, the epitaxy of silicon1"5 and tungstenep7 on single-crystal metal oxide insulators was studied extensively. The deposition of molybdenum is a logical extension of the tungsten work since the crystal structure is identical and the lattice dimensions differ by less than 1 pct. The pyrolytic decomposition of molybdenum hexafluoride in hydrogen was used to grow molybdenum films on the oxide substrates AlzOs, MgA1~04, MgO, and Be0 at from 650" to 900°C, depending on the substrate material. Under the experimental conditions to be described, monocrystalline films of controlled orientation were obtained. The materials investigated and their crystal structure are listed in Table I. EXPERIMENTAL The molybdenum depositions were effected by the hydrogen reduction of molybdenum hexafluoride (MoFe) in a flowing system of hydrogen at atmospheric pressure. The schematic of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The hydrogen, purified by passage through a heated palladium thimble, was mixed with the vapor of the liquid MoFe maintained in a steel bottle at room temperature (25°C). Large scale mining of Mesabi taconites may have moved nearer to realization with the arrival of the latest model Linde Jet-Piercing machine at Reserve Mining Co.'s Babbitt, Minn. property. When the machine is placed in operation it is expected to pierce blast holes in the hard taconite beds up to 10 times faster than is possible with existing drilling equipment. The new primary blast hole drilling machine has been designated the JPM-3, and is the successor to the JPM-1, in operation at Erie Mining Co.'s taconite mines at Aurora, Minn. The size of primary blast holes which can now be pierced has increased from a nominal 61 in. diameter to 71 in. diameter and maximum hole depth has increased from 35 ft to 47 ft. Development has progressed to where 71/2 in. holes can be pierced with the same speed as 61/2 in. holes. Piercing progress is controlled by electronic blowpipe descent controls. Other features of the JPM-3 include: automatic burner ignition from the operating cab; heated and air conditioned operating cab designed for all-year operation; mechanical improvements for sub-zero operation common to the Mesabi, and redesign of wearing parts for longer service with minimum maintenance. The 40-ton machine is self-propelled. Power, oxygen, and cooling water lines trail from the machine. Jet piercing is based on combustion products of oxygen and a liquid fuel such as kerosene. The flame, jetting from a burner at speeds of about 6000 ft per sec, disintegrates layers of spallable rock. The burner is cooled by water which is then directed through orifices around the periphery of the burner. The water changes to steam and carries the spallings out of the hole. The equipment used in Jet-Piercing is essentially a tractor-mounted blowpipe containing a combustion chamber and nozzle, which is in effect a miniature rocket motor, from which the supersonic combustion gases emerge to do their work.

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) is in the process of evolving a computer-based information system which will process all of the material selected for abstracting in the area of chemistry and chemical engineering and its related fields such as the earth sciences and technologies. This system is already operational to some extent and is expected to be fully utilized by 1971. The objective of CAS is to make chemical and related information more readily available, more usable and more used. Chemical Abstracts handle some 5000 abstracts weekly from 13, 000 journals and patents from 25 nations. These cover all of the 80 CA subject sections which relate to chemistry and also extend into areas of interest to geologists, mineralogists, and mining engineers. In this way, CAS fulfills its objective of complete coverage of its major fields, informative abstracting, and indexing to maximum specificity. The concept of a computer-based information system is that of a single machine-language data base into which the results of intellectual analysis of the literature are entered and from which computer programs produce a variety of publications and services applicable to the needs of a wide range of users.

ThE raw materials of the ceramic industry are mostly clays. This raw material is ground, water is added and the mixture pugged into a moist, plastic, rather stiff mass. From this mass the desired units of manufacture are made (bricks, hollow building tile, sewer pipe, etc.). These units are dried; then placed in kilns and heated until the desired degree of vitrification is obtained. For firing ceramic ware, two distinct types of kilns are used; namely, periodic and continuous tunnel. Periodic Kilns Periodic kilns are those ordinarily seen in a brick plant. They are either round or rectangular. The raw, dried, formed ware is piled or set in the kilns to depths frequently exceeding 10 ft. The kiln is heated until the ware is matured, then gradually cooled sufficiently to allow men to remove the ware; then the cycle is repeated. The time duration of the cycle may be more than two weeks. In order that heat can be distributed uniformly throughout the pile or setting, the units are placed so as to leave open spaces or flues throughout the pile for the passage of the hot gases. Each kiln is provided with a number of fireboxes (usually 10 or 12) spaced equally in the outside wall. The fireboxes may be equipped with flat or inclined grate bars or they may have no grates at all (dead bottom). Down-draft kilns are most used. In these the hot gaseous products of combustion from the fireboxes are deflected upward by bag walls just inside the fire zone. From the top of the kiln the gases are drawn down through the setting, off through holes in the kiln bottom, and conducted to a stack or stacks. In up-draft kilns the fireboxes are usually set somewhat lower. The hot gases are drawn inward and upward through the ware and pass off from the top. Up-draft kilns find their greatest use in the firing of common brick. In either case the problem is to maintain, as nearly as possible,

In discussing Mr. Keller's paper, I quoted the results obtained by Mr. Allan Gibb, correctly crediting them to Mr. Gibb, with due reference to the report in which they were published. But in the table immediately following, and in my further remarks, following the table, I find that, by some clerical or other error which I cannot, after the lapse of time, explain, I spoke of Mr. Gibb as Mr. "Dean"—a metallurgist who had written on a related subject, but not on the point I was discussing. In short, my reference throughout was to the work of Mr. Gibb; and by reading a Gibb " for a Dean " in all places on pp. 832 and 835 where the latter name occurs, my remarks will be brought into accordance with my intention, and with the facts.

The trend in both the metallic and nonmetallic mining industry is toward processing increasingly higher tonnages of lower grade ores, thereby resulting in a growing interest in progressively larger volume individual machines in the flotation circuit. Because of the relatively high cost of large flotation machine development and evaluation, it is important to establish a rational basis by which the existing smaller flotation machine experience can be extrapolated to establish the configuration of the next larger family of flotation machines with a minimum of development modification in the field. This Paper reviews the R&D approach used in translating smaller flotation machine experience to the configuration of a 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) induced air machine. Internal cell hydrodynamic principles, which governed this extrapolation, and cell (liquid) surface and froth management considerations will be reviewed, and prototype machine mill tests will be summarized.
