One of the most unexpected and unusual mining disasters which have ever been recorded in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, or, in fact, in any coal-mining district, occurred in the northern anthracite field near Nanticoke, Luzerne County, about 10 o'clock on Friday morning, December 18, 1885. This accident caused the death of twenty-six persons, a larger number than had perished in any catastrophe in the anthracite mines since that which occurred at the West Pittston mine in 1871. The Nanticoke disaster resulted from a " cave-in " in the roof of a portion of the Ross coal-bed workings from Slope No. 1 of the Susquehanna Coal Company, by which a large body of quicksand, gravel, rock- and coal-boulders, and water broke through the roof of the mine, filling up a large extent of the workings, until not only the water, but also the rock material, flowed out at the mouth of the mine. Immediately over the point where the "cave-in" occurred, was located a large pile of refuse coal and slate, taken from Slope No. a. After the occurrence of the accident, I made a very careful examination of the ground in the vicinity of the "cave-in," in conjunction with a study of all the maps, sections and other mining data in the possession of the Susquehanna Coal Company, which were placed at my disposal by Manager Irving A. Stearns. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, was compiled from the Company's map, and from special maps made by the Geological Survey under the direction of my assistant, Mr. Frank A. Hill. This map shows the relative position of the mine-workings, the surface features and the "cave-in," and other points to be specially referred to hereafter. MINE power systems are quite different in many respects from those usually found in industrial plants. Wide areas are served, usually by a circuit which is connected continuously throughout the mine. In some mines one circuit may run for several miles. There are usually a small number of branch circuits involved considering the areas covered. In all mines circuits are sectionalized at approximately 2500 ft by means of switches. All, or at least most branch circuits, are sectionalized by manual switches. In some mines automatic sectionalizing gear is used to give automatic overload protection at various strategic points in the system. However at the present time this practice is by no means general. Circuit hazards in mine electric systems are much greater than those encountered in industrial installation. Falls of roof or coal form a prominent hazard which may break the wire and may cause ground faults or partial ground faults. Ordinarily electric cables in mines cannot be insulated, there- fore n fall can easily cause a short circuit. The humidity in most mines is greater than 95 pct and at many points the floor is wet and water may be dripping from the roof over insulators, increasing the difficulties at that point. All electrical circuits must be contained in the mine entries and space must also be provided for moving equipment and men. Consequently, because of the proximity of the power circuit to the locomotives and other moving equipment a considerable hazard is introduced. Mine haulage track is not always good so that wrecks are not unusual. A wreck frequently does consider- able damage to the power circuit. A ground fault frequently results in heavy arcing which may be sustained. If the damage to the circuit is mechanical it may mean that a trip of coal has wrecked and a great deal of coal dust could be thrown into the air as a result of the wreck. The arc resulting from the ground fault could ignite the coal dust and a mine explosion would result. A continued ground fault, even if high in resistance, also may ignite the coal which may be on the bottom of the entry and a mine fire may result. The fire hazard is one of the most serious hazards in any coal mine. Since the mine circuit is completely interconnected, any power interruption resulting from a fault seriously affects the whole operation. Unless the mine is completely sectionalized the whole mine will be shut down until the fault is located and the proper switches are opened to isolate the fault; even then large areas may still be without power if they are supplied by a single power circuit which may be opened in isolating the fault. Further, mine power is usually supplied from a relatively small number of substations and the fault may be on a stub feed circuit, in which case power cannot be restored until the fault has been cleared. Practice varies widely with respect to placement of substations. Usually they will be spaced from I to 2 miles in 500V operations, and at 1 mile intervals or less, in 250 V operation. Actual mining operations govern substation placements and no general rules can be followed.

The theory of the differentiation method for the Couette flow experiment is reviewed. Particular attention is given to the requirements on data analyses in the case of the class of non-Newtonian materials described as viscoplastics, i.e., materials characterized by a yield point or yield stress. Here changes in boundary conditions arise when the shearing stress attains a critical value with the result that the form of the basic integral equation for Couette flow is determined by the flow conditions existing during the measurement. INTRODUCTION In the preceding papers in this series,l,2 the salient features of the differentiation method of rheological analysis in Poiseuille-type flow were discussed. It was shown that a dual differentiation-integration method analysis of the Poiseuille flow of idealized generalized Newtonian and visco-plastic models could be used to develop a spectrum of highly sensitive response patterns in terms of certain characteristic derivative functions. These functions were shown to optimize the selection of the most appropriate functional relationship between f(p) and p from the Poiseuille flow experiment. The present paper reviews the theory of the differentiation method as applied to the equally important Couette flow experiment. We will also discuss the range of variables over which the basic integral equation for Couette flow is applicable when the non-Newtonian material is of the viscoplastic type, i.e., characterized by a yield point or yield stress. THEORY Having described the application of the differentiation method to Poiseuille-type flow in the preceding papers, we now proceed to the case where the test liquid is confined to the annular space between coaxial cylinders of length L, one of which is in motion, i.e., Couette flow, formulating the basic integral equation after the method of Mooney.3 The observed kinematical and dynamical quantities are the angular velocity O and the torque T. INVAR is the preeminent low-expansion metal by virtue of the fact that it can be prepared with a zero coefficient of expansion at atmospheric temperature. This fact suggests that there is little room for improvement in the expansion properties of the low-expansion nickel steels. The inference is true, however, only so far as the expansion at and near atmospheric temperature is concerned, because the expansivity of invar starts to increase rapidly on heating above 100° C. and soon reaches the value of copper. Guillaume1 met this situation by increasing the nickel content above that of invar. By that expedient, alloys having low expansivity under higher temperatures were obtained, but not without a large increase in minimum expansivity. The increase in minimum expansivity with increasing nickel content severely limits the technical applications of these alloys at high temperatures. Prospects of improving the expansion characteristics of the nickel steels is offered by alloying. Search for an advantageous alloying addition by analogy with other alloy systems, however, is not productive because the low-expansion characteristic is unique with that system. The rule of mixtures usually gives a fair value of the expansivity of other solid-solution alloys, but in the iron-nickel systems gives a value of 18 X 10-6 per deg. C. whereas the actual value is 1 X 10-6 per deg. C. Apparently suitable additions are not to be deduced from such ingenuous considerations. Recognition of the fact that the temperature range of low expansivity in nickel steels is terminated with loss of magnetism affords a more promising basis for the selection of an advantageous element. One may expect from that fact that additions of nonmagnetic elements to the iron-nickel alloys are detrimental to the low-expansion characteristic. Indeed, carbon, manganese, silicon, copper and chromium are detri-mental to the expansion properties and no nonmagnetic element is reported to be beneficial. From the same viewpoint, the addition of a magnetic metal offers prospects of improvement. As two of the three ferromagnetic elements are already present in the

As predicted, during 1937 South Louisiana witnessed one of the most active drilling campaigns in the history of the area, resulting in the discovery .of 14 new fields. The economic importance of 10,000-ft. production was far-reaching and the objective depths placed on some wildcats was 12,000 feet. Most of the important discoveries and deep tests were in the delta area between the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers, where the upper Miocene sands were found productive between 10,000 and 11,000 ft. The casing program on these wells usually called for a protection string of 95/8-in. casing at approximately 9500 ft. Drilling barges with the heaviest equipment were used where water transportation was available. The oil production for South Louisiana during 1937 was 62,147,690 bbl., as compared with 51,968,727 bbl. during 1936, an increase of 19.5 per cent. There were 281 oil and gas wells and 172 dry holes completed during 1937 as compared with 262 oil and gas wells and 135 dry holes during the previous period. New Fields Gibson.—The first discovery for the year was in the Gibson area, where Shell Petroleum Corporation's Realty Operators No. 1, sec. 18, 17 S., 15 E., Terrebonne Parish, was completed flowing 780 bbl. of 38° A.P.I. oil daily through a 14/64-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 1700 lb. Production is from upper Miocene sand found from 9461 to 9483 feet. Abbevil1e.—The discovery well for the Abbeville field was Continental Oil Company's Hebert No. 1, sec. 20, 12 S., 3 E., Vermilion Parish, completed flowing 50 bbl. of distillate and 2 million cubic feet of gas through a 3/16-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 2550 lb. The well was plugged back from 12,216 ft. in the Chickisawhay, and is producing through perforations from upper Miocene sand found from 7668 to 7682 ft. Later in the year, the same operators completed Brookshire No. 1, sec. 66, 12 S., 3 E., flowing 366 bbl. of 42° A.P.I. oil per day through a 3/16-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 1800 lb. The torsional deformation of aluminum and magnesium crystals is investigated, with particular reference to the dependence of proportional limit on crystal orientation. The proportional limit is found to be governed by the average value of the resolved shear stress on the most highly stressed slip systems, but the proportional limit does not strictly obey a critical-resolved-shear-stress law. The behavior of a cylindrical single crystal stressed in tension is well known: plastic flow begins when the resolved shear stress on the most highly stressed slip system reaches a critical value. There is much less understanding of the effect of torsion on such a crystal and on the way in which the critical-resolved-shear-stress law should be applied to torsional deformation. In the present paper particular attention is paid to the dependence of plastic yielding on crystal orientation and lesser attention to the mechanism of flow after yielding has occurred. New work on aluminum and magnesium crystals is presented, and previous results obtained in this laboratory on magnesium1 are re-examined. STRESS DISTRIBUTION The problems involved in torsional deformation of single crystals are due entirely to the complexity of the stress distribution. In tension, if loading conditions are perfect, the shear stress on any particular slip plane is completely uniform over the entire area of that plane. In torsion, on the other hand, the stress on any selected plane in a particular direction varies not only from center to edge of the specimen but also around its perimeter. It is convenient to express the stress at any point in terms of t0, which is the shear stress acting at the surface of a cylindrical specimen on a plane normal to the axis and in a direction tangential to the cylinder. At point P of Fig. 1 this stress acts in the direction of axis 2 and is given by To = 2T/pr3 [1] where T is the applied torque and r the specimen radius. This stress can be resolved on any chosen slip system, and details are given in the Appendix. Let P be the point on the specimen surface where the stress is to be evaluated; P is defined by its angular distance A from an arbitrary reference line through 0 normal to the axis. his line is usually taken as the direction of incidence of the X-ray beam used to determine the crystal orientation.) 3.2-1. Introduction. Much has appeared in the technical literature on theory of sampling (18, 37), weight of sample required in relation to particle size (28), probability of error in sampling (3), and statistical analysis of sample data (20). Each industry, whether it be copper, iron ore, or coal, has its own standards and methods. All of the rather extensive theoretical treatments appearing in published literature on sampling apply to material already on hand such as coal, iron ore, or copper concentrates in rail cars, or in moving streams such as on conveyor belts. The attempt usually is to apply statistical techniques in order to improve reliability and precision in sampling, and to reduce differences between the analyses of seller and buyer. In contrast to this type of sampling, very little has appeared in the literature on sampling a virgin deposit from the metallurgical point of view. Perhaps it would he more descriptive to designate this point of view as "Gm-metallurgical," since geology is inextricably interwoven with metallurgy in gaining an understanding of the complexities of a deposit, eventually leading to a definition of mineable reserves, with the development of a flowsheet and engineering criteria for the planning of a successful and profitable operation. The degree of cooperation between these two departments often determines whether the processing plant is a success at the inception of operations, or whether expensive changes and modifications must he made, with the plant finally reaching rated capacity at some later date. The first concern of the metallurgical department should be to establish proper accreditation of the samples which will be used in any ore-testing campaign. It should he made mandatory, as part of operating management policy, for the responsible metallurgist to he aware of the significance of the samples and to become intimately knowledgeable in all aspects of metallurgical behavior and response to treatment of all varieties of ore in the deposit under consideration.

The Knudsen cell-mass spectrometer combimtion has been used to study the Fe-Al and Ag-Al liquid alloys. By application of the recently developed integration technique to the measured ion-current ratios, activities have been derived for the Fe-A1 system at 1600° C and for the Ag-Al system at 1340"C. The results are partially represented by the following equations: Internal consistency between the data on silver-rich and iron-rich alloys is demonstrated by application of the literature measurements on the distribution of aluminum between the nearly immiscible liquids iron and silver. The usual restrictions on the ratio of the mean free path of the escaping atoms to the orifice diameter of the Knudsen cell are shown not to be limiting in this technique. DESPITE the importance of a knowledge of the activity of aluminum in understanding deoxidation equilibria in molten steel, no direct studies have been made of activities in liquid Fe-A1 alloys at steel-making temperatures. Lower-temperature direct studies have, however, been carried out on aluminum-rich liquid alloys by Gross, Levi, Dewing, and Eilson' at 1300°C and by Coskun and Elliott' at 1315°C. Apart from phase diagram calculations by Pehlke, other determinations have been indirect and were made by measurement of the distribution of aluminum between iron and silver475 and combination of these data with extrapolated activities in the Ag-A1 system.~-% ecently, however, Woolley and Elliott have made a significant contribution by directly measuring heats of solution in the Fe-A1 system at 1600°C. The present authorslo have recently employed a Knudsen cell-mass spectrometer technique in a study of activities in iron-based liquid alloys. In this technique activities and heats of solution are determined from a series of measurements of the ratio of ion currents of the components; and since ion-current ratios are used, problems caused by changes in instrument sensitivity or cell geometry are overcome. Results obtained for the Fe-Ni system were found to be in excellent agreement with previous work, thus demonstrating the reliability of the method. The present paper describes a similar study of activities in the liquid Fe-A1 and Ag-A1 systems, this latter system being included in order that a meaningful comparison can be made with the above-mentioned indirect studies. INTEGRATION EQUATIONS A detailed derivation of the equations used to determine the thermodynamic properties from the measured ion current ratios has been given elsewhere;'' however it is useful to summarize them here. By the combination of the Gibbs-Duhem equation with the direct proportionality between ion-current ratios and partial pressure ratios, it was shown that for a binary system at constant temperature and pressure: where al is the activity of component 1 with pure substance as the standard state, N, is the atom fraction of component 2 in the solution, and I; and t'2 are ion currents of given isotopes of the components. The activity coefficient is given by: this latter equation being more suitable for graphical integration. Combination of Eq. [l] with the Gibbs-Helmholtz equation gives an expression for the partial molar heat of mixing: EXPERIMENTAL A Bendix Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer model 12! fitted with a 107 ion source and a M-105-G-6 electron multiplier, was used to analyze the vapor effusing from the Knudsen cell. The arrangement of the Knudsen cell assembly was essentially that of the commercial instrument (Bendix model 1030) but with several modifications. Instead of heating with a single tungsten filament, a cylindrical tantalum-mesh heater was employed. Up to 1400°C simple resistance heating was used but above this temperature electron bombardment between the tantalum mesh and the tantalum cell susceptor was necessary. The temperature was measured by means of a Leeds and Northrup disappear ing-filament type optical pyrometer sighted on an essentially black-body hole in the side of the cell. Details of the temperature control, temperature measurement, and in situ calibration of the optical pyrometer can be found elsewhere.I0 In the investigation of the Fe-A1 system the Knudsen cells were constructed of thoria crucibles with fitted thoria lids (Zircoa). The cells employed in investigating the Ag-A1 alloys were made up of high-purity alumina crucibles (Morganite) with lids of recrystal-lized alumina (Lucalox). The cells were 0.370 in.

A great number of the investigations on the plastic flow of metals have been concerned with the establishment of a "universal" stress-strain relation. In such a relation some stress function when plotted against a strain function should yield identical curves for the various stress states. In the first investigation of this type, Ludwik and Scheu1 plotted the maximum shearing stress as a function of the maximum principal strain. Later Ros and Eichinger2 introduced two universal stress-strain relations, the one relating the maximum shearing stress to the maximum shearing strain, and the other relating a stress invariant, suggested by von Mises and Haigh, to the corresponding strain invariant. (In more recent investigations the stress and strain invariants are frequently supplemented with some factor to render their meaning more lucid.) A further suggestion which has not attracted appreciable attention is that by Baranski³ who used stress and strain deviators. The most common means of experimentation to determine the relation between stress and strain consists in subjecting thin walled tubes to combined internal pressure and axial tension.4a,4b,4c This method allows the study of plastic flow under stresses which are variable in two directions. However, the plastic flow which can be obtained in this manner is comparatively small, being limited by either tension failure or instability. For copper,'. only the relation between maximum shearing stress and maximum shearing strain yielded good agreement. On the other hand, tests on a stee14b and on an aluminum alloy4c. resulted in systematic deviations if any of the discussed universal stress-strain relations were used. It would seem, therefore, that the agreement mentioned above for copper is only incidental and explained by its high rate of strain hardening compared to that of other metals. Much larger strains than experienced in the tube tests can be obtained by subjecting a thin membrane of a ductile metal, which is restrained at its periphery, to a uniform hydraulic pressure. The thin sheet forms a deep bulge before it fails. The stresses and strains in such a bulge increase with increasing distance from the edge of the clamping "die," the maximum stresses and strains occurring at the pole (crown) of the bulge. While the stress and strain states are determined by the contour of the bulge, the absolute magnitude of the stresses and strains depends upon the hydraulic pressure. The bulge contour is in turn correlated with the geometry of the die opening. The deformation and fracture characteristics of circular bulges, that is, bulges formed with circular clamping dies, have been the subject of numerous experimental and analytical investi-gations.5,6,7 It has been shown that plastically deformed circular bulges develop large and comparatively uniform strains before failure by instability"6b,6c,6d and closely assume a spherical shape.6d Also the distribution of strains across the contour of the bulge is dependent on the metal being investigated and is correlated with, but cannot be predicted from, the metal's stress-strain characteristics. On the other hand, oblong or elliptical bulges, that is, bulges formed with elliptical clamping dies, are not as susceptible to analytical analysis and have not been investigated to the extent that circular bulges have. The few available data6c,7c indicate that stress states are obtained at the poles of the bulges, varying between plane strain and balanced biaxial tension, depending upon the geometry of the die opening. In this paper, the strain state and curvatures exhibited by three bulge shapes, a circular and two elliptical bulges, Fig 1, are analyzed experimentally using methods described in previous publications.6a,6c An attempt is made to derive the stress-strain relations for these bulges, which represent strain states in which the ratio of the two positive principal strains varied between 1.0 and 0.35. In addition, tension tests yielded data for a value of —0.5 for this strain ratio. Such an analysis should indicate the applicability of the various laws correlating stress with strain to the stress and strain states occurring in bulged shapes. A spectrochemical method of slag analysis is descibed which utilizes fusion of the sample with a flux, then cooling and crushing to put all samples into a common form. The powder, is then fed onto adhesive tape and passed through a spark by means of a special device to provide very reproducible discharge conditions. Combined with a direct-reading optical emission instrument, this system provides speed and accuracy of antilysis heretofore unobtainable for. slag samples by any other method. THERE are many suggested methods for spectro-chemical analysis of slags. The most important are fusion-pellet methods and solution methods. In our company the fusion-pellet method has been used earlier, and is described by Lounamaa. W. H. Tingle and C. K. Matocha have made refinements of the pellet method.' A Committee of the British Iron and Steel Research Association has investigated different methods of spectrochemical analysis of slags. Its purpose was to formulate a method which would give the complete analysis in 30 min with an accuracy of ±3 pct. The committee recommends a solution technique, which was thought to correspond best to their requirements. The method to be described is a fusion-tape method. The sample is isoformed by fusion and grinding. The powder is analyzed with the tape technique. The tape machine and some of its applications are described earlier.4'5 The powder to be analyzed is continuously fed onto a moving adhesive tape, which passes through the spark gap. The sparks break through the tape and vaporize and excite the material to be analyzed. The most outstanding feature of the tape machine is its very high reproducibility. The concept of isoformation has been introduced earlier.= It means a pretreatment of the samples to make them uniform from the spectralanalytical point of view, i.e., cancelling systematic differences between the samples. The purpose of the isoformation is to reduce the influence of particle size, as well as chemical and mineral composition. Before describing the isoformation by fusion plus grinding, which is the purpose of this paper, a few words will be said about two other types of isoformations, i.e., grinding with buffer and ion exchange plus grinding as they have been considered during the application of the tape technique for slag analysis. Grinding with buffer might be a sufficient isoformation in some special cases, where the mineral composition is defined. The time of grinding must, however, be rather long, at least 5 to 10 min, even when using such an efficient mill as the Swing Mill from Messrs. Siebtechnik, Mühlheim, Germany. This type of isoformation is not recommended due to its limitations and due to the fact that the gain in time compared with the fusion technique is almost negligible. The principle of ion exchange plus grinding and some of its applications have been described.5 The following elements of interest in slag analysis can be determined in this way: Na, K, Cu, Mg, Ca, Ba, Zn, Pb, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni. The very important element Si, however, cannot be analyzed with this method. Although the ion exchange isoformation for slag analysis cannot be looked upon as a routine method, it can be used for

The steady-state kinetics and microstructures of simultaneous internal oxidation and external scale formation were investigated for the oxidation of Cb-Zr and Ch-Zr-Re alloys in pure oxygen at 1000°C. For each binary alloy, a constant rate of scale formation was observed at steady state; the internal oxidatton zone reached a steady-state, time-independent thickness. The dependence of the scaling rate on zirconium content exhibited a maximum at a low zirconium colttent; more concentrated alloys oxidized at a slower rate than pure columbium. This composition dependence of the scaling rate may be partially attributed to the effect of the internal oxidation process as an intenla1 sink for oxygen, with the formation of voluminous, and relatively impermeable ZrO2 precipitates. However, the morphologies of the ZrO2 internal oxide precipitates also affected the scaling rate. The internal oxide precipitates were distributed uniformly in the external scale. The steady-state thicknesses of the internal oxidation zones were not in agreement with those predicted theoretically from an idealized simple model. However, in this particular alloy systen1 the ideal model is not satisfied experitmentally. For ternary Cb- Zr - Re alloys with Nr10e = 0.02 or 0.05, the steady-state thicknesses of the internal oxidation zones were less than those for the corresponding binary Cb-Zr alloys. For ternary alloys with NRe(0) - 0.05, a more adherent and much less porous external scale was formed, and a reduction in the kinetics of scale formation was observed. A number of authors'-7 have reported linear oxidation kinetics for the reaction of pure columbium at 1000°C in air or in oxygen of about 1 atm pressure. A thin and tightly adherent oxide layer is found at the metal/oxide interface beneath a porous external layer of scale. Although the suboxides CbO and CbO2 represent thermodynamically stable phases at 100O°C, generally only Cb2O5* is identified as a reaction product in quenched specimens. Studies at 1000°C at lower oxygen pressures8,10 (Po2 - 10-4 Torr) show that both CbO and CbO2 do form and that CbO2 is a protective oxide. The growth of CbO2 results in parabolic kinetics until Cb2O5 is nucleated and grows. Apparently because of the large volume change associated with its formation, Cb2O5 is porous and does not serve as a diffusion barrier; linear kinetics prevail after the surface is covered with Cb2o5. On the basis of these observations, several authors5,9,10 have suggested that the linear oxidation of pure columbium at 1000°C in air or oxygen of 1 atm is limited by a Loriers-type mechanism,11 whereby the total rate or reaction is controlled by ionic diffusion through a thin layer of CbO2 which is maintained at a constant thickness throughout the linear oxidation. However, the concept of a Loriers model for a three-phase CbOlCbO2 Cb2O5 scale, with the only oxygen activity gradient across the NbO2 phase, is not self-consistent. Further, the suboxides CbO and CbO2 were not observed in the high-temperature X-ray diffraction study of columbium oxidation by Goldschmidt.8 From investigations in which the large PO2, dependence of the linear scaling rate was demonstrated, the importance of an oxygen adsorption or dissolution step has been suggested.4,5,7,10,12 Thus the mechanism for the linear oxidation of pure columbium remains quite controversial. Since further insight into the oxidation mechanism of pure columbium is not provided by this investigation, the authors wish to emphasize at the outset that their experimental results are not interpreted in terms of a particular rate controlling step for the oxidation of pure columbium. Previous investigations13-18 of the oxidation of Cb-Zr solid-solution alloys in air or oxygen at 1000°C suggest a remarkable dependence upon zirconium content. For an alloy of bulk zirconium mole fraction, N2r(0) equal to 0.05 or 0.10, the oxygen uptake is reported to be as high as four times greater than that for pure columbium;13,14 for alloys with NZr(0) 0.05 or 0.10 the oxygen uptake is reported to decrease with increasing NZr(0); to a minimum uptake of about one quarter that for pure columbium at NZr(0): = 0.50.13-15Since zirconium forms a more stable oxide (ZrO2) than the lowest columbium oxide (CbO), and since columbium exhibits a high solubility19,20 and diffusivity21,23 for oxygen, the internal oxidation of the zirconium component to ZrO2 is expected at a reaction front ahead of the advancing metal/scale interface. The external scale is then formed at the metal/scale interface by the inward migration of oxygen through the scale, probably through a series combination of molecular and ionic diffusion. Internal oxidation in conjunction with external scale formation has been investigated by Maak24 for the oxidation of dilute Cu-Be alloys in pure oxygen at 850°C. For cu-Be and many other binary alloys,24-27 very small, essentially uniaxial internal oxide particles are formed in the most dilute compositions; for somewhat more concentrated alloys. the internal oxide particles precipitate as platelets or needles.
