In the study of the sintering of meta powders, we have come to the conclusion in this laboratory that further progress requires a more basic understanding of the operating mechanisms. This is emphasized in detail by Shaler. He has shown that a knowledge of the exact value of the surface tension is imperative for a solution of the kinetics of sintering. This force plays a principal role in causing the density of compacts to increase.2 Furthermore, a knowledge of the surface tension of solids is also applicable to other aspects of physical metallurgy. C. S. Smith3 points out the relation between surface and interfacial tension and their function in determining the microstructure and resulting properties of polycrystal-line and polyphase alloys. This paper describes one group of results of an experimental program designed for the study of the surface tension in solid metals. As a by-product of this work, considerable information has been obtained on the rate and nature of the flow of a metal at temperatures approaching the melting point and under extremely low stresses, a field of mechanical behavior heretofore scarcely touched by metallurgists. The importance of this additional information to students of powder metallurgy need not be stressed. Theoretical Considerations Interfacial tension arises from the condition that an excess of energy exists at the interface between two phases. Gibbs proves that this energy is a partial function of the interfacial area; thus: ?F/?s = ? where ?F/?s is the rate of change of free energy of the system with changing surface area, at constant temperature, pressure and composition, and ? is the interfacial tension, or interfacial free energy per unit area. If one of the phases is the pure liquid or solid, and the other the vapor of the substance, ? may properly be termed "surface tension," and is a characteristic of the solid or liquid. The attempt of a body to lower its free energy by decreasing its surface gives rise to a force in the surface which is numerically equal in terms of unit length to the free energy per unit area of the surface. Thus ? may be expressed either in erg-cm-² or in dyne-cm-1. Similarly, surface tension may be determined either by a thermo-dynamic measurement of the surface energy or by a mechanical measurement of the surface force. We have chosen the latter approach. Tammann and Boehme4 determined the surface tension of gold by measuring the amount of shrinkage or extension of thin weighted foil at various temperatures and interpolating to zero strain. The method is of questionable accuracy because of the tendency of foil to form minute tears when heated under tension. Their assumption of F = 2W?, where W is the width of the foil, is unsound, as the foil can decrease its surface area by transverse as well as by longitudinal shrinkage. Although their experimentation was meticulous, the paper does not include details of the sample configuration required for recalculating ? on a correct basis, even if such a calculation were possible. In the experimental procedure chosen here, a series of small weights of increasing magnitude are suspended from a series of line copper wires of uniform cross-section. This array is brought to a temperature at which creep is appreciable under extremely small stress. If the weight overbalances the contracting force of surface tension, the wire stretches; otherwise, it shrinks. The magnitude of the strain is determined by the amount of unbalance, so a plot of strain vs. load should cross the zero strain axis at w = F?. If balance is visualized as a thermodynamic equilibrium, the critical load is readily calculated. At constant temperature, an infinitesimal change in surface energy should be equal to the work done on or by the weight: ds = wdl [A] For a cylinder, s = 2pr2 + 2prl [2] If the volume remains constant, r = vV/pl [31 s = 2vpl+2V/l [4] ds = vpv/l - 2V/l²) dl [5] Substituting [5] into [I] gives for the equilibrium load, w = ?(z/rV- 2V/12) [6] and, again expressing V in terms of r and l, w = pr?(1 - 2r/l [7] Here the end-effect term, 2r/l, is neglected for thin wires in subsequent work. Eq 7 can be confirmed by means of a stress analysis. J. STEVENS*—The authors state that the contamination in the metal was due mostly to the ladle refractories. Did the contamination vary with different brands of refractories or different qualities in the ladle ? C. B. POST (authors' reply)—That would be expected. In our shop we have used a grade of firebrick which is fairly standard. We do use high refractory nozzles to combat this erosion and high refractory sleeves, but there is such a problem when you get a skull in a ladle you just cannot use these high refractory bricks; you rip out the whole ladle getting the skull cleaned up. The acid bricks form a glass, and you can pull the skull out when you do get them. I believe you might find variations among the different refractories depending on how much silicon is in the brick. This determines how much silica is going into the interface between the steel and the brick. Our brick is about 35 pet alumina and 65 pet silica. With a brick of 35 pet alumina in the slag patches new calculations would have to be made. R. PARDEE*—Where can you draw the line in determining the refractories as being a silica refractory ? C. B. POST—More silica than about 50 pet. I think perhaps that is generally the criterion. The brick we use is a good high grade fire brick. T. S. WASHBURN*--With reference to the higher silicon that is recommended as a result of this investigation, is it contemplated that the specified range would be raised to 0.40-0.60 pet silicon, or possibly 0.50-1.00 pet silicon? These higher silicon ranges would affect the physical properties of the steel and consequently there might be some complications with respect to educating the consumers to 'accept this revision of the conventional analysis. Discussion of the paper of. C. L. DAKE, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 103, July, 1915, pp. 1429 to 1436. A. C. LAWSON, Berkeley, Cal.-It appears that our bog-iron ores are due in a large measure to the activity of certain iron bacteria, and a paper dealing with this subject that makes no reference to that particular agency strikes me as rather curious. C. L. DANE, Rolla, Mo.-Mr. Lawson's criticism that this paper makes no reference to the activity, of iron bacteria is scarcely true. On p. 1430 I stated: "Certain bacteria precipitate iron by building the hydrated oxide into their body cells," and again, "There are many other means by which, under special conditions, iron may be precipitated in nature. Oxidation, evaporation of CO2, and iron bacteria have been held to be the most important." Thus the activity of bacteria receives as extended mention as the action of any other agency in precipitation of iron. The paper makes no pretense of covering exhaustively the origin of bog ores, but, as its original title suggested, refers to Some Principles Controlling the Formation and Distribution of Bog Iron Ores. Mr. Lawson seems to have entirely missed the main thesis of the paper, which attempts to establish some relation between glaciation and abundance of bog ores now forming. Unfortunately, I have no immediate access to the literature of the subject, but my best recollection is that the data regarding iron bacteria throw no light whatever on the cause of bog ores being so much in ore abundant within the limits of the glaciated regions, and being reported much less frequently from the tropics. This lack of data is suggested in the following (p. 1434): "It has already been shown that bacteria aid in the precipitation of iron. Whether tropical conditions increase or decrease the activity of such bacteria is unknown."

IT is well known that the so-called pure aluminum contains noticeable amounts of impurities, chiefly iron and silicon, and many investigators have studied the forms in which these impurities exist. Hanson and Archbutt1 state that iron exists in aluminum as FeAl3 and silicon as elementary Si. The solubility of FeAl3 in solid aluminum is practically zero, or at, least so small that the smallest trace of this compound is always visible as a separate constituent. Under the microscope an untrained eye can hardly distinguish, without etching, the two constituents FeAl3 and Si, but they can be differentiated by suitable etching reagents. Anderson2 also found the same results. At the same time, Merica, Waltenberg, and Freeman3 found a constituent of unknown composition. They found a small thermal effect, at 610° C., on the cooling curves of aluminum with small amounts of iron and silicon. The intensity of this effect increased with increasing silicon content, until an effect occured at 576° C. due to the eutectic between aluminum and silicon. The authors ascribed the effect at 610° C. to a compound, which they call "X constituent." It was thought to be a ternary compound containing iron and silicon and could be observed under the microscope as dark particles. Dix4 has published unetched photomicrographs of an aluminum with 0.51 per cent. iron, 0.99 per cent. silicon, and 0.32 per cent. copper that shows three constituents: the dark Si (black in the figure), the lighter FeAl3, which appears in half tone and crystallizes in needles, and a constituent of the same color as FeAl3 but of different crystal form, often resembling Chinese script. This last constituent, Dix thought, is a compound of Fe and Si; not the compound FeSi but a compound containing a relatively small amount of silicon. Therefore an alloy of aluminum, iron, and silicon (the copper should not be regarded in the following considerations) must contain the following four constituents: Al, FeAl3,

MEASUREMENTS of the solubility of scandium in liquid cadmium from 349" to 606°C by Chasanov, Hunt, Johnson, and eder' led to the isolation and characterization of the intermetallic compound ScCQ. The solid phase found in equilibrium with a saturated solution of scandium in liquid cadmium above 422°C is ScCQ. The equilibrium solid phase below this temperature has not as yet been characterized. Hexagonal needles of ScCG were isolated from a 5 wt pct Sc alloy which had been ice-quenched from 500°C. Free cadmium was leached away from the intermetallic with saturated ammonium nitrate solution. The concentration of cadmium in successive leaches was followed polarographically and the leaching process was terminated when the rate of cadmium dissolution decreased markedly. Chemical analysis of the intermetallic thus isolated is as follows: 11.5 wt pct Sc and 88.3 wt pct Cd. The composition of ScCQ is 11.8 wt pct Sc and 88.2 wt pct Cd. X-ray diffraction powder photographs of ScCds taken in a 114.6-mm Debye-Scherrer camera with CuKa, radiation can be indexed on the basis of a hexagonal nit cell. Lattice coonstants are a. = 6.330 ± 0.001A to 6.324 i 0.001A and co = 4.853 i 0.001A. The a0 has a slight range with the lower value seemingly associated with the cadmium-rich terminus of the phase. With eight atoms in the unit cell the calculated intermetallic density is 7.54 g per cu cm; the density as determined by a liquid-displacement method is 7.7 g per cu cm. Powder-diffraction data for ScCQ are recorded in Table I. Stoichiometry, symmetry, unit-cell dimensions, and the number of atoms per unit cell indicate the MgsCd (D019) type structure for ScCQ; space group is D,&-P6,/mmc. Atomic coordinates are:

The Meadow River No. 1 preparation plant, owned by Sewell Coal Co. which is a subsidiary of the Pittston Co., was commissioned in the spring of 1974. A survey of the environmental noise levels was conducted, and the dominant noise sources identified. An engineering program was initiated to reduce the prevailing levels to a point that the operator's exposure would be within compliance with the MESA regulation for ear protection. The program was continued until compliance was achieved and the attenuation factors for each abatement device recorded. The highlights of this program will be presented with a discussion of the practicality of the devices utilized.

The effects of mutual interactions between elements on the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys containing chrormium, columbium, molybdenurn, nickel, or silicon have been determined. The equilibrium nitrogen solubilities in the liquid iron alloys were measured by the Sieverts method. The second-order effects caused by the presence of chrormium, columbium , or silicon in the melt were found to be significant. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys containing several alloying elements has also been measured as a function of melt temperature and nitrogen pressure. The heat of solution of nitrogen in microcomponent iron alloys has been found to be a function of the logarithnz of the activity coefficient of nitrogen, irrvespectilje of the composition of the melt. The heat of solution of nitrogen in pure liquid iron was determined to be 1265 ± 450 cal per g-atom of N over the temperatxue range 1600° to 1800°. Sieverts ' law was obeyed for all melt compositions studied in the pressure interval 0.4 to 1.0 atm. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid pure iron and in many dilute binary liquid-iron alloys has been the subject of many investigations. Pehlke and Elliott' made a comprehensive investigation on this subject in which they summarized and compared previous researches. However, the practical application of these solubility studies requires prediction of the nitrogen solubility in the multicomponent alloys encountered in operating practice. The interaction parameter as defined by wagner2 has been used to predict the behavior of a solute in a complex alloy, and a modification of this approach has met with reasonable success in several instances.'1"5 The necessity for extending the nitrogen solubility data on binary alloys is caused by the lack of direct measurements of the solubility of nitrogen in molten alloy steels. A direct comparison between measured solubilities and those predicted for multicomponent alloys based on data in binary systems has been made in only a few instances, and most of these were reviewed by Langenberg,6 who developed a graphical technique for predicting nitrogen solubilities in multicomponent iron alloys. The solubility of nitrogen has also been studied over the entire Fe-Cr-Ni ternary system by Humbert and Elliott.? Both studies compared the solubilities computed from binary iron alloy data with those measured in ternary alloys in the liquid state at 1600°C. Most of the nitrogen solubility measurements referred to above were for iron alloys at 1600°C; thus, the ability to predict nitrogen solubilities in molten iron alloys has been restricted primarily to alloys at 1600°C. Recently, Nelsson8 devised an approximate method for calculating the change in nitrogen solubility in molten iron alloys as a function of temperature, but an assumption of regular solution behavior limits the applicability of the method. Chipman and Corrigan9,10 have developed an empirical correlation. based on the activity coefficient of nitrogen in the iron alloy at 1600°C, which facilitates the estimation of nitrogen solubilities at higher temperatures. This method also has limitations, due to the necessity of calculating the activity coefficient for nitrogen in a multicomponent iron alloy at 1600°C from the nitrogen solubility data for binary iron alloys. The shortcoming of such a straightforward approach to the problem of predicting nitrogen solubilities is the disregard of mutual interactions between elements in a complex iron melt. This investigation was conducted in an attempt to provide a more reliable method of predicting nitrogen solubilities in multicomponent iron alloys. The effects of the mutual interactions between chromium, nickel, silicon, molybdenum, or columbium in iron were studied, using the Sieverts' technique1,7 to measure the effects of alloy composition, temperature, and pressure on the solubility of nitrogen in ternary liquid iron alloys.

In examination of some cold-rolled copper and cupronickel that contained a little columbium, it was discovered that these alloys were unusually resistant to annealing. This effect was suficiently pronounced to warrant some investigation of the annealing characteristics of such compositions. Experimental Procedure The alloys were made from cathode copper, electrolytic nickel, and a special copper-columbium hardener alloy furnished by the Electro Metallurgical Corporation. This hardener alloy contained 10 per cent columbium, with tantalum, aluminum and iron as major impurities. The melting was carried out in a clay-graphite crucible in a high-frequency induction furnace! under a charcoal or electrode carbon cover. No deoxidizing additions were made. The 7-lb. copper heats were poured into a steel mold, hot-rolled to 1/4-in. thickness, and annealed for 56 hr. at 760°C.; the cupronickels were annealed I hr. at 815°C. The material was then cold-rolled to a 50 per cent reduction in thickness and annealing tests were carried out on this 1/8-in. hard-rolled strip. This study shows that statistics on the rate of coal dumping can measure the effectiveness of freeze conditioning agents. The use of appropriately indexed dumping intervals or interval logrithms provides a more sensitive indication of unloading problems than does a simple calculation of average loading time because of the abnormal form of the distribution of dumping intervals. The paper presents information that indicates suitably applied coal freeze conditioning agents are effective in reducing coal handling problems attributable to frozen coal. Graphs and figures show that the severity of coal freezing potential due to subfreezing temperatures is proportional to the exposure time and average departure of the temperature from the freezing point.

INTRODUCTION From the lender's point of view, the greatest period of risk in a project financing occurs during the construction phase. Therefore, most projects are supported during this phase by completion guarantees supplied by some credit-worthy entity; for example, the project sponsors in the case of a joint venture, such as that of W.R. Grace, Hanna Mining, and Liberty Capital; or by a strong contract with a utility or foreign importer/investor, such as the way North American Coal Corporation has structured many of its transactions. THE PROJECT LOAN REQUEST A project financing is a more complex form of term loan than one using an ongoing corporation's balance sheet as a credit base and, therefore, a potential lender will subject the loan request to a more rigorous analysis. To support this effort, the financial institution will require a more detailed information memorandum to evaluate the credit and technical risks of a project - especially since much of the necessary information is not otherwise available. (See also Gibbs and Sroka paper above in this Chapter) A well-prepared information memorandum will impress prospective lenders with the planning ability and general competence of management. Also, the process of preparing the memorandum will help management understand the true extent of the opportunities and limitations of its venture. Appendix A outlines the topics which comprise a complete information memorandum for a loan request. Of some interest to those seeking to sell a currently-operating mining venture, a similar information memorandum should be prepared i.e., covering the same topics discussed here, for the investment banker to use with potential purchasers. For that purpose, though, one might not want to prepare quite as much detail as for a lender. Appendix B outlines the elements of a reserve evaluation and feasibility study, often called the "Bankable Document." Usually, these studies are prepared by independent engineering consultants for use by potential borrowers and sellers. (Potential purchasers will often contract for a similar study for their use in evaluating an acquisition.) ELEMENTS OF A LOAN INFORMATION MEMORANDUM 1. Outline: The information memorandum should begin with a one-page outline covering such topics as: a. The borrower's name, address, and phone number. b. Principal contact at the borrower. c. Amount of the proposed financing. d. Desired pricing and structure of the proposed financing. This should include a description of the amount and source of equity in the proposed financing. e. Use of the proceeds and timing. 2. Summary: The most important information contained in the memorandum should be summarized in two pages. Note - If the borrower is a recently-formed single-purpose company, then elements 3, 4, and 5 will apply to the guarantors of completion and to the project sponsors. 3. The Borrower: This section is a brief biography of the borrower including such topics as date and state of incorporation, founder(s), lines of business, etc. 4. Capitalization: The borrower's current debt and equity position, including leases and trade debt, with amounts, terms, names, and addresses enumerated. Equity owners, and percentage ownership, should be identified. 5. Historical Financial Statements: If available, a minimum of five year's worth of complete historical financial statements

Using a modified capillary-reservoir technique, electromigration of dilute solutions of silver in liquid bismuth has been measured with relatively good precision. The effects of experiment duration, temperature. current density, and silver concentration have been investigated. Chemical diffusion coefficients of silver in liquid bismuth were also measured at temperatures ranging from 300°to 600°C. The effective valence of silver in bismuth was calculated as a function of temperature from a comparison of electric mobilities and diffusion coefficients. In an alloy containing 1 wt pct Ag, the electric mobility of silver increased from 1.65 x X sq cm per v-sec at 300°C to 2.38 x 10-4at 600°C; the diffusion coefficient in-creased from 3.0 to 17.5 x 10-5 sq cm per sec over the same temperature range. Calculated values of effective valence decreased from 0.28 at 300°C to 0.10 at 600°c. ALTHOUGH there has been considerable progress in the theoretical treatment of electron-transport properties in liquid metals, the mechanisms of mass-transport phenomena in liquid metals are still not clearly understood. This is especially true for the case of electro migration, alternatively termed elec-trotransport or electrodiffusion, which is mass transport induced by an applied electric field. A thorough knowledge of the mechanisms governing electromigration will considerably aid in understanding the electronic state of an impurity atom in a liquid metal. Electromigration has been long observed and studied in liquid metals and alloys. However, no satisfactory theory to explain the observed effects has been developed. The disparity in the present theoretical treatments, summarized by Verhoeven,1 has been attributed to the difficulty in describing the momentum transfer between electrons and ions and to the lack of precise measurements in liquid metals, especially at elevated temperatures. Prior to the last decade most of the electromigration studies were qualitative, in that only the direction of migration of alloy constituents was determined with any degree of reliability. These results have been summarized by schwarz,2 who was able to measure the electric mobility of several elements in mercury. More recently electromigration in liquid metals has been measured by a variety of techniques, with a varying degree of success. Mangelsdorf3,4 made precise measurements on dilute amalgams at room temperature, using a technique relating changes in composition to changes in alloy resistivity, but was unable to make measurements at elevated temperatures. Using a modification of this technique, Verhoeven and Hucke5 measured electromigration and resistivities in liquid Bi-Sn alloys. However, the resistivity technique is not sensitive to small composition changes and is impractical for very dilute alloys. Verhoeven and Hucke6 also measured electromigration of several solutes in liquid bismuth by adapting the capillary-reservoir method for determining diffusion coefficients in liquids. The reported precision of these measurements was poor, however, primarily due to the large uncertainties in the chemical analyses to determine concentration changes. Belashchenko7 has summarized the recent Russian investigations of electromigration, many of which, however, are of questionable accuracy. The present study was initiated to develop an experimental technique which would be both versatile and sufficiently sensitive to yield precise measurements of electromigration of solutes in dilute metal alloys at elevated temperatures. Using this technique, a comprehensive study of silver in liquid bismuth was made to determine the effects of experimental variables on the apparent electric mobilities. Chemical diffusion coefficients of silver in liquid bismuth were also measured over the same temperature range for comparison with the electromigration data. There are probably as many variations of the method for blowing-in blast-furnaces as there are furnace superintendents. That some of these variations are poor practice is shown by the troublesome and sometimes disastrous experiences of many furnace-men, even within the last few years. It is the object of this paper to put on record a blowing-in practice that has gradually developed to the point where the results are sure, safe, and satisfactory; and also to bring into discussion several variations that are questionable. The blowing-in of a modern blast-furnace is one of the greatest of metallurgical operations. On its degree of success depends much of the future life of the lining and the subsequent behavior of the furnace; and it involves possibilities of danger to the men engaged in the work. The objects to be attained are the heating of the interior of the furnace to the high temperature necessary for smelting iron; the starting of the smelting process; and the gradual movement of the stock in its downward course. The most critical points are the placing of the kindling-wood, the " bringing down " of the gas, the closing of the iron-notch, and the first cast. The lighting of the first gas, the opening of the cinder-notch for the first flush, and the running of the first cast are anxious times for the superintendent and the furnace-men. Drying-Out the Furnace. As soon as a furnace-lining is completed it should be thoroughly dried out, whether it is to be blown-in soon or not; and the longer it is dried, the better for the furnace. At least two weeks is desirable; but good results can be had with 10 days of firing. Mine power systems are quite different in many respects from those usually found in industrial plants. Wide areas are served, usually by a circuit which is connected continuously throughout the mine. In some mines one circuit may run for several miles. There are usually a small number of branch circuits involved considering the areas covered. In all mines circuits are sectional-ized at approximately 2500 ft by means of switches. All, or at least most branch .circuits, are sectionalized by manual switches. In some mines automatic sectionalizing gear is used to give automatic overload protection at various strategic points in the system. However at the present time this practice is by no means general. Circuit hazards in mine electric systems are much greater than those encountered in industrial installation. Falls of roof or coal form a prominent hazard which may break the wire and may cause ground faults or partial ground faults. Ordinarily electric cables in mines cannot be insulated, therefore a fall can easily cause a short circuit. The humidity in most mines is greater than 95 pct and at many points the floor is wet and water may be dripping from the roof over insulators, increasing the difficulties at that point. All electrical circuits must be contained in the mine entries and space must also be provided for moving equipment and men. Consequently, because of the proximity of the power circuit to the locomotives and other moving equipment a considerable hazard is introduced. Mine haulage track is not always good so that wrecks are not unusual. A wreck frequently does considerable damage to the power circuit. A ground fault frequently results in heavy arcing which may be sustained. If the damage to the circuit is mechanical it may mean that a trip of coal has wrecked and a great deal of coal dust could be thrown into the air as a result of the wreck. The arc resulting from the ground fault could ignite the coal dust and a mine explosion would result. A continued ground fault, even if high in resistance, also may ignite the coal which may be on the bottom of the entry and a mine fire may result. The fire hazard is one of the most serious hazards in any coal mine. Since the mine circuit is completely interconnected, any power interruption resulting. from a fault seriously affects the whole operation. Unless the mine is completely sectionalized the whole mine will be shut down until the fault is located and the proper switches are opened to isolate the fault; even then large areas may still be without power if they are supplied by a single power circuit which may be opened in isolating the fault. Further, mine power is usually supplied from a relatively small number of substations and the fault may be on a stub feed circuit, in which case power cannot be restored until the fault has been cleared. Practice varies widely with respect to placement of substations. Usually they will be spaced from I to 2 miles in 500V opera-tions, and at I mile intervals or less, in 250V operation. Actual mining operations govern substation placements and no general rules can be followed.

Federal and utility industry research has largely ignored coal beneficiation techniques in the implementation of SOx control. This paper accepts the hypothesis that beneficiation cum scrubbing is the cheapest way for the vast majority of seams in the eastern coal provinces to comply with standards. Comparisons are based on point estimates of average beneficiation costs from a model of coal preparation (COBET) designed to simulate four levels of cleaning. The paper describes how economic theory can be applied to derive econometric supply functions from actual data on the geology of minable seams, washability and technical constraints. West Virginia is taken as an example of a producing region. Spatial supply functions are derived empirically from the engineering model simulations.

A new Military, Engineering School has been established at Camp A. A. Humphreys, Virginia. This camp was used throughout the summer and fall of 1918 for the Engineering Officers Training School in preparing engineer officers for the United States Army. The camp and the courses prescribed were laid out on an ambitious scheme, which since the armistice has been signed, have been directed wholly, toward the permanent establishment of an Engineering Training School for Officers of the regular Army. Those young officers who were graduated from Nest Point at the end of a two-year course, necessitated by the emergency, have been ordered to Camp Humphreys to complete their engineering education.

THE use of minute boron additions to steel has been given considerable attention in recent years. Comparisons made between boron-free and boron-containing heats of otherwise identical analysis have indicated, beyond a doubt, the potent effect of boron for increasing hardenability. The actual hardenability increase has been expressed as a multiplying factor, or in terms of the percentage of other alloying elements boron might replace, The present study presents the results of a systematic survey of. the use of boron as an addition to two types of alloyed steels and as a replacement for various percentages of molybdenum in these steels, Both cast and wrought steels of the two basic compositions were prepared. Molybdenum, because of its scarcity at the time the investigation was started, was selected as the element to be replaced by boron. Attention was also given to the effects of boron on other properties of the steels, particularly their notched-bar toughness, to investigate other advantages or limitations of this element as an alloy addition. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Steels Investigated The two basic compositions used in this survey of boron as a replacement for molybdenum are given in Table I. The cast steels were higher than the wrought steels in silicon content to improve the casting quality. [ ] Each of these base steels, both cast and wrought, was made with molybdenum contents of o, 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, or 0.40 per cent, the total comprising 20 steels. In addition, each of these 20 compositions . was prepared with boron additions in amounts of 0.0015, 0.003, and o,006 per cent as ferroboron; and in amounts of 0.002 and 0.005 per cent as two com¬mercial intensifier alloys, designated alloys A and B. The boron-treated steels totaled 100, and the entire series 120, Test Procedure Each steel was melted as an individual heat in a 50-lb., magnesia-lined induction furnace.
