THERE are many who may consider a paper on aerial transport and its possibilities in connection with mining operations somewhat premature. Nevertheless, as there is considerable interest manifested in the subject at the present time and the amount of information available is both scanty and misleading, the result of investigations in some of the remote mining districts of Peru will not only be of interest, but will help crystallize, in the minds of many, a more correct conception of just what an airplane is capable of doing. By way of introduction, I will deal briefly with the types and varieties of airplanes now in use, and the developments of the past few years, pointing out -how the war has encouraged machines. of startling performance rather than those of commercial utility. I will then take up aerial transport in general, showing how airplanes may be employed to advantage and the particular kind of work for which they are best suited. This will cover a preliminary discussion on cost, which is one of the most important phases of the subject. In passing on from a general survey of the situation, I will deal with actual observations and investigations made in Peru. This part of the paper will be divided into two sections: the first, covering the mountainous districts of the Andes (Tamboras, Pataz, Soledad, etc.); the second, the alluvial deposits in the rivers, Chinchipe, Santiago, and Napo. In each case the question of atmospheric conditions, altitude, landing grounds, motors, cost, etc. will be discussed. While it is my intention to deal chiefly with mining in the sections mentioned, the same line of argument will be applicable to any other districts in the world. In conclusion, I will touch on the possibilities of using lighter-than-air craft of the Zeppelin type, followed by a summary of the most salient points brought out in the paper.

DUWEZ1 has shown that pure titanium and pure zirconium transform martensitically during rapid cooling at temperatures about 30° and 15°C re spectively below their To temperatures. Holden et al.2 determined M, temperatures of Ti-Cu alloys by a metallographic technique applied to isothermally treated samples. Their results, superposed on the McQuillan3 version of the partial Ti-Cu diagram are shown in Fig. 1. Sources of metals were: Titanium: Iodide bar; Foote Mineral Co. Ltd. Zirconium: Iodide bar; Foote Mineral Co. LM. Copper: Spectrographic Standard; Johnson Matthey and Co. Ltd. Alloys were prepared by levitation melting under argon to the following nominal compositions:* 0.5, Quenching, at rates to about 8000°C per sec, was performed by cooling in a stream of helium (99.999 pct pure) a 3/64 in. cube of material previously heated by a tungsten coil in a system operating at. 10-5 mm Hg. Cooling rates below 200°C per sec w were obtained by controlling the current to the heater coil. The specimen was supported on a 32 gage Pt, Pt-Rh thermocouple attached through a DC amplifier to an Edin magnetic oscillograph (Model 8082) with a maximum chart speed of 250 mm per sec. Transformation temperatures were read off the oscillograph charts at the location of the beginning of the thermal arrest. The same specimen was quenched several times, and all runs were repeated on new samples. Regular calibrations of the oscillograph against a potentiometer were made between quenching experiments. The criterion of martensite formation was the effect of surface rumpling. Previously polished samples that showed a rumpled surface after transformation are assumed to have undergone martens itic transformation: transformations of a diffusion type produce no surface disturbance, Figs. 2 and 3. Electrochemical measurements were made in a cell described elsewhere4 whose electrodes were the martensitic and the diffusion-transformed materials in the following electrolytes:

In the course of some experiments conducted in the Metallographical Laboratory of Harvard University, some interesting facts were brought to light which appear to be worth recording in advance of a more elaborate and exhaustive paper which the authors hope to present to the Institute in the near future. Fig. 1 shows, under a magnification of 100 diameters, the microstructure of the cross-section of a steel bar 1/2-inch square, containing 0.52 per cent. carbon, heated to 1100 degrees C. and cooled slowly with the furnace. Fig. 2 illustrates the structure of the same steel, heated to the same temperature but cooled more rapidly in the air. Both samples were cut from the same bar and heated side by side in the furnace. When a temperature of 1100 degrees C. had been reached, one sample was taken out of the furnace and allowed to cool in the air, while the other was cooled with the furnace. The only difference, therefore, in the treatment of both samples will be found in their respective rate of cooling. This variation in the rate of cooling resulted, as shown

Bruce C. Netschert—It is unfortunate that the authors of this paper consider it necessary to begin with an expression of concern over possible false interpretations of the word "economics." In their preoccupation with the definition of economics, they have adopted a definition of mineral economics which is, to say the least, unduly narrow. Just as the broad field of economics is not confined to a study of the profitability of business concerns, but includes the problems of production, distribution, and consumption as they pertain to society as a whole; so an inclusive definition of mineral economics should not be confined to the determination of the profitability of mineral-producing and processing enterprises, but should include the significance of the unique characteristics of mineral resources as raw materials for the use of society. Such features as the exhaustibility and localized, haphazard occurrence of deposits, the existence of a secondary (scrap) supply, and the increasing cost of operation during the life of a mining enterprise are obviously factors which concern those businesses which are producing mineral raw materials, since they partially determine the profitability of such enterprises. They are also of concern to society as a whole, however, as characteristics of one of the basic elements of the economic system. In the last analysis, the contribution which mineral economics can make as a means of determining and guiding social policy with respect to the production and utilization of mineral resources is perhaps more important than its use as a basis for determining the cost accounting procedure of individual firms. The list of "economic factors peculiar to the industrial minerals" which the authors present is in reality an application of such a broad definition of mineral economics. An inconsistency appears, however, in the inclusion of items 8 and 9 in the list. As this writer sees it, the point in question is: What influences do the characteristics of industrial minerals have on the characteristics and operating procedures of industrial mineral enterprises which are not present in the metallic mineral field? In answering this question with items 8 and 9, Messrs. Ladoo and Stokes do not recognize that there are two distinct types of differences between the two fields of enterprise. There are, on the one hand, important basic economic distinctions due to inherent economic characteristics of industrial minerals which do not pertain to metallic minerals. On the other hand are those characteristics of the industrial mineral enterprises peculiar to them alone, but which are superficial and temporary, in that they may be changed or eliminated at the discretion of the managers of those enterprises. The lack of adequate research and development in industrial mineral production, processing, and marketing (item 8) is not due to an inherent characteristic of industrial minerals. It is true that one may perhaps describe the field of industrial mineral enterprise in terms of such a deficiency, just as one could, until recently, point to a similar lack of research and development in the coal industry; but unless it can be shown that the deficiency has been wholly or partially due to the very nature of industrial minerals themselves it is not an "economic factor peculiar to the industrial minerals" but a temporary characteristic peculiar to the industry. In the writer's opinion, the authors have not demonstrated that the former relationship exists. Similarly, item 9, the "influence of technologic developments," is also not inherently peculiar to industrial minerals. Nowhere in the discussion of this item do the authors mention anything that is not equally applicable to the field of metallic minerals. This is not meant to imply that the specific technologic developments which the authors list are of equal significance in both fields. It does mean that such a statement as, "technological advances together with new consuming areas to provide markets make deposits commercially valuable which once were of no interest" cannot be considered as an argument that technological developments have significance in the field of industrial minerals alone. In considering the problem of stockpiling, the authors note that the stockpiling of nonstrategic materials might be desirable if future wartime needs could exceed domestic production capacity, but dismiss this as hardly adequate to justify such stockpiling. The problem, however, can be stated in broader economic terms, i.e., the real costs (as distinguished from the money costs) of prewar versus wartime production. In other words, it might well be that the labor and capital required to produce a given amount of a certain mineral raw material could be used more efficiently in another industry. In such a case it is obviously advantageous to stockpile the material in prewar times rather than forego the benefits of additional production in another line of endeavor during wartime under conditions which demand the optimum use of all resources, including manpower and capital. Computer process analysis and control techniques are overcoming major hurdles to acceptance in the mineral industry. With the growing list of new advances characteristic of a rapidly maturing discipline, management of the companies on the leading edge are keenly aware of the advantages of using computer methods in process applications. Significant advancement is already evident in such technical areas as operations research, mathematical modeling, statistical methods, and computer-based procedural techniques. The early advances during the past decade are already documented in prior symposium proceedings of this series. Thus, the currently active areas of the advancing technology are emphasized here. This section deals with applications in pyrometallurgical and kiln processes. The two sections which follow deal with concentrating operations from two points of view: 1) mathematical modeling, and 2) on-line control. In the metallurgical field, emphasis on developing effective process computer applications for the steel industry began in the late 1950's. Simulation techniques also received substantial attention. The steel industry was soon joined by the cement industry in the development of computer methods for process applications. Computers were in use for feed-material blending and kiln control in the early 1960's. Computer development in other pyro processes, such as aluminum reduction and glass-making, also marked significant advances by the mid 1960's. Aluminum smelter potline control is a nearly universal application at this point, and the development of glass furnace computer process control represented a recent important technical advance in digital control techniques. Steel Hot strip rolling was the earliest significant process computer application in the metallurgical industry. Computer control of rolling mill operations is now a steel mill standard component, particularly in plants newly placed into production. 1, 2 Initial computer installations principally carried out procedural routines in setting mill clearances for production lot control. Recent developments are leading toward feedback control based on mathematical model techniques. 3

THE statutory requirements of the States and the district rules are, broadly speaking, similar. There is just enough difference to make it tantalizing. DIFFERENCES IN STATE LEGISLATION GOVERNING THE LOCATION OF MINING CLAIMS Discovery Discovery is the first step in the location of the claim. The provision of the Revised Statutes (2320) is, "No location of a mining claim shall be made until the discovery of the vein or lode within the limits of the claim located." Strictly speaking, discovery may be defined as the finding of ore or metalliferous rock in place in a well-defined vein. This definition was too strict, so discovery extended later to cover such indications of the presence of ore, within rock in place, as would justify an experienced miner in spending his time and money with a reasonable expectation of finding ore in paying quantities. According to Colorado statutes a discovery must show a well-defined crevice; in Arizona, a lode, deposit, or mineral in place; in Montana, a well-defined crevice or valuable deposit; in Nevada, a lode or deposit of mineral in place. It is wrong to require a discovery. An honest prospector, wishing to obey the law, finds himself compelled, in most cases, to evade this point. In Clear Creek district, Colorado, a quartz seam will constitute a discovery; in Butte, a red capping; in Leadville or Ely, it is any place where a man can find a piece of vacant ground big enough upon which to sink a 10-ft. hole. If the vein or deposit outcrops a man can show a discovery, but if it does not outcrop it is foolish to compel him to show one; and this point has been gently side-stepped. Any hole 10 ft. deep now constitutes a discovery. It is no use having laws that the people cannot consistently obey. No sane man will dig unless he expects to find mineral, and he should be protected while digging. He should be required to show that he has mineral ground only when he comes to patent.

In a paper contributed by W. A. Goodyear, M.E., on "Water Gas as Fuel," read at the Boston Meeting, February, 1883,* the following statenlent was made: "The latest experiments on a scale of some magnitude in our citier, in the way of heating buildings and furnishing power for manufacturing purposes, have been by the distribution of high-presslire steam through pipes laid in the streets. Hilt these experiments (1) have not hitherto been very successful; and when we consider the high cost and (2) the great and unavoidable loss of heat and power, which always accompany the conveyance of high-pressnre steam to any considerable distance in pipes, to say nothing of (3) certain practical difficulties in the management of the pipes themselves, (4) it is evident that all such methods must eventually disappear before a system which can furnish a cheap gas of great heating power, easily distributed wherever wanted, without requiring pipes to stand pressures of 50 to 75 pounds per square inch, and (5) without keeping the whole mass of ground in the streets through which it passes hot, gratis, for a distance of ten or fifteen feet, in all directions around the pipes!' For the purpose of controverting Mr. Goodyear's statements in regard to steam-distribution in cities, I hare numbered the points made in his indictment, my principal object being, not a professional discussion of the technical and theoretical merits of steam vs. watergas, but a simple statement of facts, in regard to the present state of the street system of steam distribntion. Taking Mr. Goodyear's points in their order: 1. Concerning what he terms " These experiments," saying that they " have not hitherto been very successful," I propose to show, that the problem of stearn-distribution has passed beyond the experimental stage, and that its practical solution is highly successful. This will be shown by the facts hereinafter fully set forth. 2. "The great and unavoidable loss of heat and power whicn always accompany the conveyance of high-pressure steam to any con-

T. M. Drown, South Bethlehem, Pa.: Mr. Thackray's paper shows in a striking way the high degree of rapidity and ac curacy exhibited by the chemists of our steel-works in ordinary everyday practice. That determinations made in an hour should present only slight differences in the third place of deci male is certainly matter for surprise and congratulation. This remarkable result has been due, perhaps, in part, to a remark able cause. The managers of works, ignorant of all the diffi culties of the laboratory, have demanded "the impossible " of their chemists—and the chemists have done it! Andrew A. Blair, Philadelphia, Pa.: Mr. Thackray's paper is extremely interesting, especially in its bearing on the question of a standard method for the rapid determination of phosphorus in the laboratories of steel-works. Before discussing the re sults in general, I desire to explain the results obtained by me under method A'. This is the method which I have used in the work of the sub-committee on Methods of the Interna tional Steel Standards Committee. It may be described briefly as follows: Solution in nitric acid; oxidation of carbonaceous matter by permanganate; precipitation of phosphoric acid by molybdate solution; reduction of molybdic acid in the reductor, and titra tion by permanganate. This method was used apparently by only three chemists, Dr. Dudley, Mr. Crowell, and myself. In determining phosphorus by this method, among the most essential points to be considered are the ratio of iron to molyb dic acid, or the reducing action of zinc on molybdic acid as compared to its reducing action on iron, and the ratio of molyb dic acid to phosphorus in the ammonium phospho-molybdate obtained by precipitation from the solution of the steel. In regard to the first point, the usually accepted ratio is 1 to 0.90756, or, as it is roughly stated, 0.9076, which is based on the assumed reduction of the molybdic acid to Mo12019,. This

THIS paper is not an announcement of the successful conclusion of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation's pacos-pyrite problems, but merely a description of the commercial-scale, intermittent-roasting operations conducted by the writer, J. H. Lucas and others of the staff. It was prepared by request, for presentation at the February meeting of the Institute. The results obtained in Peru confirm the 1-ton-a-day experiments completed about three years ago at Kearny, N. J. by C. C. Gordon and Mr. Lucas, where it was first demonstrated that a mixture of about 80 per cent. pacos ore with 10 per cent. pyrite ore and 10 per cent. salt could be roasted intermittently in a small 1-ton-a-day Holt-Dern furnace without extraneous fuel, producing porous calcine that could be leached rapidly. Mr. Keep and his staff, by successfully introducing improvements in the construction of the commercial furnace and in their handling of material, have established beyond doubt a low cost for roasting. The other steps in the process of treating pacos and pyrite ores have not as yet been demonstrated as sufficiently conclusive to warrant their acceptance for a permanent plant.

The first mention of the mining and use of coal in the Pittsburgh district refers to the mine under Duquesne Heights that furnished coal for the garrison at the fort at Pittsburgh in 1760. Coal had been dug and used as fuel just outside of Brownsville, Fayette county, in 1759, but this was not a regular mine as the opening was in an outcropping. Maps of Ohio in 1770 showed "Cole Mines" at various points. The Penns purchased all the coal south of Kittanning in southwestern Pennsylvania from the Chiefs of the Six Nations for a reported price of $10,000. During the Revolution, coal from Herron Hill, Mincrsville, and Coal Hill, all within the present city limits, was used in Pittsburgh. There is today one custom pit opened in Coal Hill (Duquesne Heights). The first steam engine was set up in Pittsburgh in 1794 and used coal as fuel. The first mine in the Youghiogheny gas district was opened in 1796. In 1803, the first shipment of coal by water was made from Pittsburgh down the Ohio river and landed at Philadelphia, where it sold for approximately $9.50 per ton. The mines along the Monongahela were naturally the first to be opened. With the completion of locks and dams in 1844, permitting slack-water navigation, the industry began to thrive. The No. 8 field of Ohio and the Fairmont region of northern West Virginia were opened in the period 1840 to 1855. From that time on there has been a continuous development of the coal rcsources of this district, until at present productive capacity is enough to supply 30 per cent. of the country's needs of bituminous coal. The original method of working the Pittsburgh seam was to drive under cover at some easily accessible point on the outcrop with a single entry, usually 1½ yd. wide. C. J. Barber (U. S. Smelting Refining & Mining Co., Salt Lake City)—In his paper Donald describes how New Jersey Zinc Co. made surveys for a connection between the Ivanhoe and Van Mater shafts at Austin-ville, Va. Except to say that the two faces had to meet "accurately" on line and grade, Donald does not indicate the required precision. Assuming that there were 24 angles in the 11/2-mile traverse and 15 in the one-mile traverse, it can be shown that if the average error in plumbing each shaft was 230" and the average error in measuring each traverse angle was 210". then the average error at the point of -connection would have been about ±1.9 ft normal to the line between the shafts. This calculation assumes that any errors in the triangulation would be negligible compared with the errors in the plumbings and traverses, and it also neglects taping errors. With no constant errors or blunders, the latter would be important only in lines normal to the line between the shafts. To make the average error at the connection less than 1.9 ft would, therefore, require either reducing the error in the plumbings to less than ±30", or that in the traverse angles to less than ±l0", or fewer stations, or a combination of these. Referring briefly to the triangulation, because of the problem of fitting a new triangulation into older surveys of the district the orientation deserved some mention, even though the connection could have been made with an assumed bearing. It would be interesting to know how many triangles were required and what the average summation error was before making any adjustments and without considering the algebraic signs. Perhaps this is referred to indirectly in the statement that the maximum angular error distributed was 2". Turning to the shaft plumbings, it would be helpful to know how many men were employed and how long each shaft was in use. Donald says that the surface positions of W-2 and W-3 were carefully surveyed from the collar position of W-1, without indicating how this was done. The length of the backsight would be particularly important. There must have been some error in setting W-1 vertically below the stations in the headframes. How immovable were the headframes, especially the Van Mater, which appears higher than the Ivanhoe and subject to more vibration because of skip hoisting? Donald does not say whether the plumbing wires had been previously restraightened to minimize spinning (otherwise they behave like weak helical springs). The use of light steel weights is most surprising because there seem to be excellent reasons for using heavier, nonmagnetic weights. Did the shafts contain no steel sets, pipes, power cables, etc., which might attract steel? The plumbing method described by Donald was designed for deep shafts in South Africa but differed from the South African practice in two important respects. As described by Browne,6 in South Africa the line between the wires was made parallel to the long axis of the shaft, whereas in the Ivanhoe shaft the lines between the wires were diagonally across the shaft. The main reason given for the South African practice is to insure that the gravitational attraction between the wires and the rock walls is the same on both wires, and therefore does not affect the bearing of the line between them. It seems probable, however, that the effect of air currents might be minimized in the South African procedure, and might be serious with the wires in the diagonal position at the Ivanhoe shaft. In the South African case cited by Donald the wires were swinging freely (although the plumb bobs were sheltered from air currents) but in the Ivanhoe case they were dampened with the plumb bobs set in water. In the discussion of Browne's paper R. St. J. Rowland said:' It has been the practice for a long time to damp the oscillations by immersing the bobs in oil or water. The time per oscillation is thus increased, thereby extending the time taken to complete the work. The longer the suspended wire the less there is to recommend the practice . . . The theoretical time for one swing of a simple pendulum 1050 ft long is approximately 36 sec, which would be increased by dampening the plumb bob in water. Hence very few complete swings would be observed in the 5 min intervals used at the Ivanhoe shaft. In the two South African cases described by Browne, the length of plumb line in one shaft was 5425 ft, the calculated period of swing was 81.6 sec, the average actual period was 76.6 sec, and 94 complete swings were observed in 2 hr. In the other case the length of plumb line was 3116 ft, the calculated period of swing was 61.8 sec, the average period was 63.5 sec, and 86 complete swings were observed in 1 hr 31 min. Browne concluded that observations of more than 30 swings are not likely to result in sufficient gain in accuracy to be justified. Returning to the Ivanhoe and Van Mater plumbings, an objection to the method used is that all four azimuths were taken from fixed points instead of swinging wires, and that each pair of observations would— barring blunders— check closely, and so perhaps give a false feeling of security. In fact, it seems that only two azimuths were obtained from one plumbing, and not four as stated by Donald. Nevertheless, the tying in of each pair of wires from both sides of the shaft has much to commend it. Donald's description leaves the impression that if each shaft was plumbed only once, the engineers were fortunate indeed if the average error in the underground orientation was as little as 30". Because the survey was done over a period of three years, it seems likely that the plumbings were repeated, perhaps more than once. The underground traverse angles were measured by conventional methods, but because the number of angles in the overlapping traverses was not given, the angular closure given by Donald does not indicate the accuracy with which this was done. The rate of growth of "Fe4N" on a iron was measured by nitriding purified iron strips in flowing am -monia -hydrogen gas mixtures at 504" and 554°C. It is shown that a dense nitride layer is formed when a zone -refined iron is used in the experiments. With less pure iron, the nitride layer is found to be porous. Through theoretical treatment, the self-diffusivity of nitrogen is evaluated porn the parabolic rate constant, and found to be essentially independent of nitrogen actirlity, e.g., D* = 3.2 x l0-12 and 7.9x l0-12 sq cm per sec at 504" and 554?C. Some consideration is given to the mechanism of diffusion in the nitride phase. THERE is a great deal of background knowledge on the solubility and diffusivity of nitrogen in iron, and on the thermodynamics and crystallography of several phases in the Fe-N system. Although case-nitrided steels have many applications in practice, no work seems to have been done on the diffusivity of nitrogen in the iron nitride, ?', phase. The only work reported on the related subject of which the authors are aware is an investigation by Prenosil,1 who measured the growth rate of the e phase on iron by nitriding in ammonia-hydrogen gas mixtures. EXPERIMENTS Purified iron plates of approximate dimensions 1 by 0.5 by 0.03 cm were nitrided in flowing mixtures of ammonia and hydrogen, in a vertical furnace fitted with a gas-tight recrystallized alumina tube. After a specified time of reaction, the sample was cooled to room temperature by withdrawal to the water cooled top of the reaction tube. The furnace temperature was controlled electronically in the usual manner within *l°C; the temperature was measured using a calibrated Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple. For each experiment the iron strip sample was cleaned with fine emery cloth and degreased with tri-chloroethylene prior to the experiment. The ammonia-hydrogen gas mixtures were prepared from anhydrous ammonia and purified hydrogen using constant pressure-head capillary flowmeters. The gas mixture flowed upward in the furnace with flow rate of 400 cc per min at stp. The composition of the gas mixture was checked by chemical analysis at regular intervals. In most cases, the compositions of the exit gas and metered input gas agreed within about 0.3 pct, indicating that cracking of ammonia did not pose a problem at the temperatures employed. Two series of experiments were carried out using two different types of purified iron samples. In the first series of experiments at 550°C, vacuum carbon deoxidized "Plastiron" was used. The main impurities present in this iron were, in ppm: 4043, 50-Cr, 20-Zr, 40-Mn, 20-P, 20-S, 20-C, 50-0, and 10-N. In these experiments the rate data were obtained by measuring the change in weight of the iron specimen suspended in the hot zone of the furnace by a platinum wire from a silica spring balance. The nitride layer formed in these experiments was found to be porous, particularly near the outer surface. In other experiments, high purity zone-refined iron (prepared in this laboratory) was used. The total impurity content of this iron was 30 ppm of which 20 ppm was Co + Ni, 4 ppm 0, other metallic impurities were less than 1 ppm. The zone-refined iron bar, -2.5 cm diam, was cold rolled to a thickness of about 0.03 cm and the specimens were prepared for the experiment as described earlier. After the nitriding experiment, the sample was copper plated electro-lytically and mounted in plastic for metallographic polishing. After polishing, the thickness of the ?' layer was measured using a metallographic microscope. The nitride layer formed on the zone-refined iron was essentially free of pores. RESULTS The different morphology of the nitride layers grown on "Plastiron" and zone-refined iron is shown in Fig. 1. Both samples were nitrided side by side for 55 hr. The holes in the less pure iron, Fig. l(a), are confined to a region about one half thickness from the outer surface. The dense layer grown on zone-refined iron, Fig. l(b), is thinner than the porous layer on the "Plastiron". The impurities in the iron are believed to be responsible for the formation of a porous nitride layer. The pore formation may be due to the high nitrogen pressures existing within the nitride layer, e.g., the equilibrium nitrogen pressure is 1.2 x l05 atm in the 38.6 pct NH3-61.4 pct H2 and 6.6 x l03 atm at the Fe-Fe4N interface at 554°C and 0.96 atm. It is possible that the oxide inclusions present in the electrolytic iron may facilitate the nuclea-tion of nitrogen gas bubbles within the nitride layer. Support for this reasoning is the fact that pores are only encountered in the outer range of the layer where nitrogen pressures are largest. The photomicrographs in Fig. 2 show the effect of reaction time on the thickness of the dense nitride layer formed on zone-refined iron. These sections are from samples nitrided in a stream of 29 pct NH3-71 pct H2 mixture at 554°C for 22, 70, and 255 hr. In all the sections examined the nitride-iron interface was noted to be rugged. IN discussing the influence of a content of gases on metals and alloys we should probably first consider the physical and chemical conditions under which these gases may be present. By a chemical analysis, such as the total extraction of gases from the liquid metal by melting in a graphite crucible in vacuo, we find only the sum of gaseous chemical elements contained in the metal in any form and no reference is made to the special form under which they have been present previously. CONDITION OF GASES IN METALS In considering. gases in metals we may first turn our attention to gases simply dissolved. Because the solubility of almost, any gas decreases suddenly at the freezing point, most of them are released during solidification, developing rise of ingots and blowholes. If only a little gas is dissolved in the molten metal the size of such blowholes may be miscroscopical, or even submicroscopical, resulting in, a certain reduction of the notched-bar impact test values. Hydrogen is believed to become less soluble as the temperature is lowered and therefore increasing quantities of this gas may be evolved during cooling between the freezing point and room temperature, leading to unsoundness of the ingot at weak spots; i.e., at the grain boundaries. This gas at the grain boundaries probably is present at high pressure and therefore impairs the mechanical properties to a degree similar to that found in the hydrogen embrittlement of copper. Usually we may trace such gases by observing rising ingots, or at least by the formation of a characteristic pattern of small grooves upon etching. Another condition of gases present within metals is that of chemical compounds, the most common being oxides and mostly present as slag inclusions of various kinds. If such oxides are insoluble in the liquid metal and emulsify with it, we find microscopical or submicroscopical slag inclusions distributed homogeneously throughout the metal and spread through the whole mass of the crystals. INTERNAL stress and season cracking in brass have been studied for many years and the technical literature contains many data on various phases of the subject. A résumé of the literature shows certain fairly well established points upon which various authors are mostly agreed: 1. Season cracking is primarily caused by the presence of relatively high internal stresses, or possibly in some cases by external stresses, or both. 2. A specific corrosion is also essential to season cracking: Certain agents, particularly mercurous salts, mercuric salts and ammonia salts; have such a specific corrosive effect. 3. The tendency to season crack under given conditions increases with increasing zinc content, brass containing less than 20 per cent zinc being relatively immune. 4. In alpha brass the season cracks are intercrystalline; in alphabeta brass they lie between the two constituents; and in beta brass they are transcrystalline. 5. The ordinary impurities or added elements in special brasses have little or no effect on the tendency to season crack. 6. Internal stresses can be eliminated, or at least reduced to a safe 'limit by annealing treatments at temperatures that do not produce visible microstructural changes or appreciable softening of the worked brasses. There are, however, some points in connection with the phenomenon of season cracking which have not been thoroughly investigated, or wherein different authors and investigators are not entirely in agreement. The investigations described in this paper were undertaken to determine: 1. The correlation between mercurous nitrate tests and actual season cracking on long-time atmospheric exposure. 2. The quantitative effect of type and degree of drawing operations on the intensity of internal stress and on the tendency to season crack in brass tubes. 3. The possibility of drawing high-brass tubes in such a manner as to prevent the occurrence of harmful stresses rather than to find a remedy for such stresses once having obtained them.

The two most widely used methods of measuring hardness are the Brinell and the scleroscope. In the Brinell method a hardened steel ball is pressed into the steel under a definite load and the area of the resulting depression is measured. The load in kg. per sq. mm. of the area of the depression is taken as a measure of the hardness. Within certain limits the hardness number so determined is independent of the load or the size of the ball. In the scleroscope method a small weight carrying a diamond point is dropped through a glass tube upon the steel and the amount of rebound is taken as proportional to the hard-' ness. In both methods the scale of hardness is an arbitrary one; however, they agree in a comparative may, that is, a steel showing 50 per cent. increase in hardness by the Brinell test mill show approximately 50 per cent. increase in hardness by the scleroscope test. Yet upon consideration of the two methods it appears that, upon a steel which has been carbonized, this should not be the case ; for the scleroscope method gives almost exclusively the surface-hardness, and the condition of the material below the surface has but a slight bearing upon the hardness number. The results given by the Brinell method should, however, be the exact opposite; for the depth of penetration 'of a ball pressed into the steel would be dependent to a large extent upon the condition of the material below the surface. This is particularly obvious when it is considered that the size of the ball ordinarily used in the Brinell method is 1 cm. (about 8 in.) in diameter under a load of 3,000 kg., while the diamond point of the scleroscope is in the neighborhood of 0.01 in. across, fitted in a hammer of about 0.5 oz. weight and dropping from a height of 10 inches.

A technique previously used to prepare alloys of InAs1-xPx and GaAsl-x Px, miry: the gaseous hydrides arsine and phosphine, has been extended to grow single -crystalline GaAs 1-x Sb x by replacing the phos-phine with stibine. Procedures were developed for handling and storing stibine which now make this chemical useful for vapor phase growth. This represents the first time that this series of alloys has been grown from the vapor phase. Layers of P -type GaSb and GaSb-rich alloys have been grown with the carrier concentrations comparable to the lowest ever reported. In addition, a p-type alloy containing 4 pct GaSb exhibited a mobility of 400 sq cm per v-sec which is equivalent to the highest reported for GaAs. RECENTLY, interest has been shown in the preparation and properties of GaAs1-xSbx alloys, since it was predicted1 that for compositions in the range of 0.1 < x < 0.5, they might provide improved Gunn devices. However, preparation of these alloys presents fundamental difficulties. In the case of liquid phase growth, the large concentration difference between the liquidus and solidus in the phase diagram, at any given temperature, introduces constitutional supercooling problems. It is likely that, for this reason, virtually no description of the preparation of GaAs1-xSbx by this technique has been reported. In the case of vapor phase growth, problems are presented by the low vapor pressure of antimony, and the low melting point of GaSb and many of these alloys. In previous attempts1 at the vapor phase growth of these materials, using antimony pentachloride as the source of antimony vapor, alloy compositions were limited to those containing less than about 2 pct GaSb. This was in part due to the difficulty of avoiding condensation of antimony on introducing it to the growth zone. A growth technique has recently been described2 for the preparation of III-V compounds in which the hydrides of arsenic and phosphorous (AsH3 and pH3) are used as the source of the group V element. With this method, GaAs1-xPx and InAs1-xPx have been prepared2&apos;3 across both alloy series with very good electrical properties. Since the use of stibine (SbH3) affords the potential for effective introduction of antimony to the growth apparatus, in analogy with the other group V hydrides, this growth method has been explored for the preparation of GaAs1-xSbx alloys. In addition to GaSb, these alloys have now been prepared with values of x as high as 0.8. In the case of GaSb, undoped p-type layers were grown with carrier concentrations equivalent to the lowest reported in the literature. Thus it has been demonstrated that, with this growth technique, all of the alloys in this series can be prepared. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Growth Technique. The growth apparatus, shown schematically in Fig. 1, and procedure are virtually identical to that described2 for the growth of GaAs1-xPx alloys, with the exception that phosphine is replaced by stibine.* HCl is introduced over the gallium boat to *Purchased from Matheson Co., E. Rutherford,N+J. transport the gallium predominantly via its subchlo-ride to the reaction zone, where it reacts with arsenic and antimony on the substrate surface to form an alloy layer. The fundamental limiting factors to the growth of GaAs1-xSbx alloys from the vapor phase, especially GaSb-rich alloys, are the low melting point of GaSb (712°C) and the low vapor pressure of antimony at this temperature (<l mm). Thus, relatively low antimony pressures must be employed, which, however, imply low growth rates. To provide low antimony pressures, very dilute concentrations of arsine and stibine in a hydrogen carrier gas were used. Typical flow rates (referred to stp) were about 4 cm3 per min of HC1 (0.06 mole pct)+ from 0.1 to 1 cm3 per min of ASH, (0.002 to 0.02 mole pct), and from 1 to 10 cn13 per min of SbH3 (0.02 to 0.2 mole pct), with a total hydrogen carrier gas flow rate of about 6000 cm3 per min. Although no precise data on decomposition. kinetics exist, it is known4 that stibine decomposes extremely rapidly at elevated temperatures. However, the high linear velocities attendent with the high total flow rate (about 2000 cm per sec) delays cracking of the stibine until it reaches the reaction zone and prevents condensation of antimony in the system. A review of the movement of coal in water is undertaken from a practical rather than a theoretical view point. Installations are described in which coal is transported on gradients down to 2.5&apos; and others which move coal at a water-coal ratio of 1:l by weight. The water cycle of the hydraulic mining system is discussed. In many applications this can be a closed circuit. The coal dewatering system is illustrated, making particular reference to the problems of storage of coal-water mixtures between the mine and the plant. Water treatment is done in thickeners down to 100 ppm which is normally sufficient for re-circulating through high pressure pumps and monitors.
