Densities of melts 0f the lime-iron oxide-silica system in contact with solid iron have been measured by the maximum bubble pressure method in the temperature range 1250° to 1440°C and the composition range 0 to 40 mol pct lime, 15 to 100 mol pct iron oxide, and 0 to 55 mol pct silica. Densities range from 4.65 g cm 3 for wustite at 1440°C to 2.75 g cm-&apos; at 1350°C for a melt containing 30 mol pct lime, 20 mol pct iron oxide, and 50 mol pct silica. The results are interpreted in terms of a postulate that the melts can be regarded as a random array of oxygen ions in which regions of local order exist to satisfy the coordination requirements 0.f the cations. An understanding of the nature of metallurgical slags is basic to the development of a sound theoretical description of heavy metallurgical extractive and refining processes. Because these liquids are complex, direct measurements of their properties has not thrown much light on their structure. This has led to the approach of measuring the properties of simpler liquids, and building up their complexity until slag compositions are reached. In this way the density of liquid iron silicates was measured in a previous study1 and the present work represents a further stage in this synthesis. EXPERIMENTAL The technique used in the measurement of density was the maximum bubble pressure method. Details of the apparatus and procedure were similar to those previously reported,&apos; with the exception that a constant voltage transformer was used to supply the power input to the furnace and six silicon carbide resistance elements were used in place of the molybdenum winding. With these modifications melt temperature could be maintained within 1 centigrade degree during the course of a run. The silica used to prepare the melts was washed natural quartz ignited at 1000°C; wustite was prepared by air-melting A.R. grade ferric oxide in an iron crucible and lime was prepared by air ignition, at 1000°C, of weighed quantities of A.R. grade calcium carbonate, previously air-dried at 110°C. The finely ground constituents were intimately mixed in a glass ball mill prior to melting. Temperatures quoted are accurate to * 5°C and the standard deviation of the density values, calculated by the method of least squares, ranged from 0.5 to 1.8 pet. However, replicate determinations of density on different melts of the same nominal composition at the same nominal temperature did not vary by more than 1 pct, Table I, and this figure has been taken as an estimate of the accuracy of the density results. The density of carbon tetra-chloride was also measured as a check on the absolute performance of the experimental method. At 20°C a value of 1.593 * 0.002 g cm"3 was obtained; this compares with the literature value2 of 1.595 g cm"3. Results of experiments designed to measure the dependence of the density of lime-iron oxide-silica melts, in contact with solid iron, on composition and temperature are shown in Table I. Because iron sometimes precipitated in the sample during quenching, the Fe203 chemical analyses were only poorly reproducible and should be taken as a guide rather than as absolute values. Fig. 1 shows the data from various sources for the density of liquid iron silicates and Fig. 2 shows isodensity contours at 1410°C for lime-iron oxide-silica melts, calculated by graphical interpolation of smoothed curves drawn through the experimental results, together with the 1400°C results of Adachi and ogino3 and Pope1 and Esin.4 Fig. 3 shows the isothermal variation with composition of the volume of melt per gram ion of oxygen at 1410°C and Fig. 4 shows regions in which the temperature coefficient of this volume is negative, positive, or negligible (<0.005 cm3 deg-I). DISCUSSION a) Disparity Between Reported Density Results. Consider the system iron oxide-silica, the results for which are summarized in Fig. 1. Although there is some difference in the temperatures at which the various densities apply, this difference is not sufficiently large to account for the observed discrepancies. The reliability of the present results for the low-silica region has been confirmed by measurement of the density of liquid wustite by three different techniques. At 1410°C the density measured by a balanced-column method was 4.55 g cm"3, by a combination balanced-column and gas-densitometer method 4.59 g emd3, and by a pycnometer method 4.53 g cm"3. Schenck, Frohberg, and Hoffermann&apos; have also reported a value of 4.55 g cm"3 for the density of liquid wustite at 1400°C. It must be concluded, therefore, that neither Pope1

The Cb-rich boundary of the (Cb,Al) a phase field at 1250OC is near 41 pct Al. The Al atoms tend to occupy the C. N. 12 sites in this structure. A homologous (Ta,Al)a phase was identified. No a phase was found in the Mo-Al system at 1200°C. The first binary o-phase with a non-transition element as a major component was found1,2 in the Cb-Al system. The composition of this phase was reported2 as approximately 34 at. pct Al, based on X-ray diffraction patterns taken of alloys in the as-cast condition. Further study of the composition of this o-phase, therefore, appeared desirable. Since Si was previously found3,4 to occupy preferentially the lowest C.N. sites (I and IV) in the a phase, and preliminary resultsa indicated that Al may show similar ordering, one of the aims of the present work was to obtain more complete information on ordering in (Cb, Al) o. Among the binary systems of Al with Ti-, V-, and Cr-group elements, the Ti-Al, Zr-Al, V-Al, and Cr-Al systems are known to comprise no o-phase. In the present work a Ta-Al and a Mo-Al alloy were studied in an effort to find additional o phases with Al as a major component. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND RESULTS An alloy with the intended composition of Ta + 40 at. pct Al was prepared by arc melting in He atmosphere. In both the as-cast condition and after annealing for 10 days at 1250°C and quenching in cold water this alloy consisted of two phases, as seen in the X-ray pattern and the microstructure. One of these phases was identified as the o-phase; the observed and calculated d-spacings are shown in Table I. The lattice parameters of this o-phase are a = 9.972 A, c = 5.214 A and c/a =0.5228, as determined from a Debye-Scherrer pattern using Fe K a radiation. The d-spacings for the unknown second phase are given in Table 11. The alloy contained approximately 25 pct of the unknown phase after annealing, as estimated on the basis of microscopic examination. A Mo-Al alloy was prepared by arc melting, with an intended Al-content of 35 at. pct. The alloy button was annealed for 7 days at 1200°C and water quenched. The X-ray pattern of the alloy in both the as-cast and the annealed state showed the reflections of Mo3Al (Cr30 type structure) and an unknown phase different from a. Six Cb-Al alloys were prepared in the composition range 30 to 50 pct Al. All alloys were arc melted in He atmosphere. After annealing for three days at 1175oC in evacuated silica capsules and quenching in water, the alloys with 30 to 40 pct Al contained three phases, namely the o-phase, Cb3Al (Cr3O-type structure) and an unknown phase. The alloys with more than 40 pct Al contained two phases, namely, what appeared metallographically, the o-phase and the same unknown phase. In the alloys containing less that 38 pct Al, the unknown phase was not present after annealing for 4 days at 1250°c,

The region about the south shore of Lake Superior is to geologists one of the most interesting districts of the United States, embracing as it does, in a limited area, old crystalline rocks, together with forms that are almost in their original condition of a beach sand and mud. In this region was first established the base of the geological column, the Azoic (" without life") System of Foster and Whitney, or the Archæan (" the beginning ") of Dana. Overlying this system are found the sandstones and limestones of the Paleozoic (" ancient life "), and their associated lava-flows (Algonkian ?). These systems possess a strong economic interest, owing to the stores of iron in the Azoic and of copper in the Paleozoic or Eozoic of this district, which forms one of the most important mining regions in America. The geology of this section is so difficult and complicated that, in its general discussion, perhaps no proposition can be stated concerning any portion of it to which exceptions cannot be taken. Indeed, out of the general discussion of different points comes in time the truth, and various geologists, even now, are working over this region in the endeavor to arrive at some consensus, or at least to determine upon what points they can agree, and upon what points difference of opinion will have to exist between them at present, until further evidence can be obtained. The writer will endeavor to give in a brief form that which appears to him at present to be the most correct statement of the geological structure of the region, admitting that from time to time, as more complete evidence shall be obtained, he expects to change his views in the future, as he has done in the past, if that evidence shall cause him to believe that he has been mistaken.

Discussion of the paper of ROSWELL H. JOHNSON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 221 to 226. A. C. LANE, Tufts College, Mass.-About a year ago Mr. Washburne read a paper on the same characteristic oil-sand waters, discussing their chemical character, and the possibility of their chemical character being modified by adsorption in passing through the shale. We are used to consider circulation as being in one stratum, and I have often gone so far as to think that 2,000 or 3,000 ft. clown I could recognize the chemical character as in part connate to a given water. For instance, the St. Peter sandstone, far underneath oil sands, seems to retain&apos; a relatively fresh and peculiar character. I am, therefore, tempted to ask the writer if in his experiments lie has made any test to see whether the chemical character of these waters is also changed, where there is any adsorption, so that the water passing through these fine-grained beds should leave behind its salt as well as its oil. In many cases salt-waters are associated with oil and-gas. A second question has occurred to me. In these days when we hear a good deal about oil flotation, may it not be well to repeat these experi-ments with pyritic concentrates, and see if they observe precisely the same with regard to the selective accumulation of oil and gas. ROSWELL H. JOHNSON.-I thank Profesor Lane for bringing this question forward. I recognize its importance, but. am not able to say I have any data upon that point. It is also very interesting in connection with Dr. Day&apos;s hypothesis of fractional filtration, and we may very easily get something happening to the water corresponding in some degree to what we get with oil. D. B. REGER, Morgantown, W. Va.-Mr. Johnson in his paper states his belief that the oil is formed originally from organic matter in the shale, and is forced out of the shale into the porous reservoir of the sand above the shale. He states further, that as you go deeper iii the measures where there is an increasing overburdens, the oil becomes less and the gas increases in large proportion, or lie says that the oil is forced back out of the sand by pressure, into the shale.

The dilalion of a ivon by interslilial carbon was measured by two independent techniques —dilatometric mesurements at 719 c and X-ray measurments of the urlil cell parameters a1 room temperature after quenching. The relative expansion per increase in cavbon content by both methods is (2.9 + 0.3) x 10-3 pev at. pcl C nrzd is temperature- independent within experimental error. This corresponds to (6.3 5 0.6) cu cm per g-atom for the partial gram-atomic volume of carbon in a iron-only slightly smaller than the atomic volume for iron in the same temperature vange. THE only previous quantitative study of the dilational effect of carbon dissolved in a iron was performed in 1934 by Burns1 which, at the time, generated some discussion of possible sources of experimental error.2 For a system of such widespread importance, we felt that a new investigation was merited. Both X-ray diffraction and dilation measurements were used to determine the expansion of the a iron lattice by dissolved carbon, avoiding as much as possible any previous experimental problems and deficiencies. The dilation method at solution temperature offers not only measurements which are free of residual strain but also, in conjunction with the room-temperature X-ray measurements, a method to detect any large temperature dependence of the partial gram-atomic volume of carbon. To insure that quenching strains did not affect the room-temperature X-ray measurements, wire specimens of constant carbon content but different diameter were examined for such an effect. SPECIMEN PREPARATION The material used for both experimental techniques was "Ferrovac E" iron received in the form of 19-mm-diam rod and stated as having the following impurity contents: C, Cr, Cu, Mn, P, and V, each in the range of 10 to 50 ppm; Co, O, Mo, S, and Si, 60 to 100 ppm; W, 200 ppm; Ni, 230 ppm; N, 4 ppm. The stock material was cold-swaged to 0.71 mm diam for the Debye-Scherrer X-ray camera specimens and portions were cold-rolled from 6.3 mm diam to 0.79- and 0.25-mm sheet for X-ray diffractometer and dilation measurements. The wires were annealed in wet hydrogen for 6 hr at 840°C and 15 hr at 720°C, and then quenched into 0°C water. A chemical analysis for carbon after this treatment gave 0.0046 + 0.0014 at. pct C. Three portions of these wires were subsequently held at 719°C in three different hydrogen + methane mixtures and then quenched, resulting in carbon concentrations of 0.0283, 0.0598, and 0.1067 at. pct C by chemical analysis. After carburizing, the wires were swaged to 0.48 mm and electroplated with silver to prevent carbon loss during subsequent heat treatment. The final heat treatment consisted of holding the wires at 72 1°C for 5 min in a He-2 pct H mixture followed by quenching into 0°C brine. The wires were held at room temperature for a few minutes to remove the silver plating using a phosphoric acid-hydrogen peroxide solution, and then stored in liquid nitrogen until the measurements were made. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE A) Dilation Measurement. The dilatometer consisted of a gas-atmosphere vertical tube furnace modified so that length changes of a ribbon-shaped specimen could be measured externally. This was done by installing a gas-tight mercury seal at the top of the furnace as shown schematically in Fig. 1. The specimen (21.0 cm long, 1.27 cm wide, and 0.25 mm thick) was suspended in the center of the furnace by 3-mm-diam quartz rods with the upper one passing through the cap of the mercury seal. Above the cap, the upper quartz rod was coupled to a lever exerting a load of about 25 g (-12 lb per sq in.) on the specimen and having a 10 times mechanical magnification. THE solubility of columbium nitride in ? iron has been determined for the temperature range 1191o to 1336°C from the nitrogen content and metallogra-phic examination of a series of Fe-Nb alloys.* (0.0 to 0.92 pct Nb) equilibrated with a purified gas mixture of 1 pct hydrogen in nitrogen. The method is the same as that used by Darken, Smith, and Filer&apos; to determine the solubility of aluminum nitride in y iron. The variation in the furnace temperature during an equilibration period was about ± 2.0°C. Each sample was approximately 1/2 in. wide, 2 in. long, and 1/16 in. thick. A time series at 1200°C using samples of highest columbium content indicated that one day was sufficient for equilibrium; however, to be on the safe side all samples were left in the furnace for either two or three days. Afterequilibration, the samples were brought to room temperature by quenching in water. The experimental results are shown in Fig. 1. To be in accord with the values reported by Wriedt and Gonzalez2 and the temperature coefficient of our results at higher temperatures, the nitrogen content of iron at 1191oC is assumed to be slightly lower than our experimental value. Our data for the single-phase regions are not sufficiently accurate to establish an interaction coefficient for nitrogen in these alloys. However, the change in nitrogen content with change in alloy content for a number of systems (Fe-N-A1;3,1 Fe-N-Ni;372 Fe-N-Si.3949 Fe-N-V;3,5 Fe-N-Cr;3,6 Fe-N-Mo3,7) has practically the same value for the liquid alloy at a temperature near 1600°C as for the solid alloy at temperatures near 1200oC when the alloy content is below a few percent. On this basis the lines through the single-phase regions have been drawn with a slope corresponding to an increase in nitrogen of 0.0013 pct per 0.1 pct Nb.3 The straight lines through the two-phase regions were drawn with a slope corresponding to a one-to-one atom ratio of nitrogen to columbium in the nitride. BAUXITE is known mainly as the ore from which aluminum is smelted but it has large use also in the manufacture of artificial abrasives and as a basis for certain chemical industries. A small amount is used for refractories and for other purposes. COMPOSITION Dana and others give the mineral formula of bauxite as A1203.2H20 and the composition as A12037 73.9 pct; H2O, 26.1 pct. It has been definitely shown, however, that bauxite does not exist as a specific mineral but rather as a rock. The term is now used synonymously with aluminum ore and it embraces gibbsite (hydrargillite or alpha trihydrate), A1203.3H20 (A12037 65.4 pct; H2O, 34.6 pct); boehmite (alpha mono¬hydrate), A1203.H20(Al203) 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct); diaspore (beta monohydrate), A1203.H2O(A12037 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct), and mixtures in various proportions of any two of them. Bauxite of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic in Europe is predominantly a mixture of gibbsite and boehmite, subordinately a mixture of boehmite and diaspore, or gibbsite and diaspore. The bauxite of North and South America, tropical Africa, Asia, and Australasia consists largely of gibbsite. Corundum (A1203) is not included under bauxite, although gradations from bauxite to emery or corundum exist. All bauxite, irrespective of the aluminum minerals composing it, contains certain impurities, including silica, in the form of clay minerals (kaolinite, halloysite, and others) or quartz, iron oxide (as hematite or goethite), titania (as leucoxene or rutile), iron sulphide (as pyrite or marcasite), iron carbonate (siderite), and calcium carbonate (as calcite); the last three mentioned in minor amount and of local occurrence only. Bauxite belongs to a group of partly consolidated materials called laterites, formed by surface weathering. This group includes also impure siliceous and ferruginous bauxite and siliceous and

AN important regional meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held, at Salt Lake City on Aug. 22 to 26, jointly with the fifth annual meeting of the Western Division of the American Mining Congress. The whole meeting was marked by enthusiasm, keen attention to the subjects under discussion, and many renewals of personal contacts. The trips to the various plants were well attended and the local press paid much attention to the meeting. The A. I. M. E. sessions began Aug. 23, with a non-technical morning session. J. 0. Elton, manager for the International Smelting Co., presided. The purpose of this session was to present in a non-technical manner the relation of flotation to mining, smelting, and the State. Ernest Gayford, metallurgist with the General En-gineering Co. of Salt Lake City, gave the definitions of flotation as suggested by Rickard, the dictionary, Weinig, and Taggart. The active agent in flotation is the air bubble, and the two prime requisites are the formation of bubbles and the creation of selective action of the bubbles for metallic particles instead of for gangue particles. Broadly, all the sulfides are floatable minerals, but the oxides, carbonates, silicates and sulfates are not. As far as Utah is concerned, flotation has been one of the greatest means of conserving its natural re-sources, because it has converted millions of tons of waste rock into pay ore; it is recovering millions of pounds of metal formerly lost in tailings; it has con-verted the zinc from a liability into an asset; and has kept thousands of men at work and distributed millions in dividends for the benefit of the State. As to the future of flotation, Mr. Gayford can con-ceive that the next 5 or 10 years may see as much, if not more, advance than was made in the preceding period. The big problem is dressing oxides, carbonates, silicates, and sulfates, and simplification of the number of reagents, also the separation of different gangue min-erals from one another.

LABOR. conditions have finally caused rock-drilling machines to supplant hand drillers in the Japanese mining industry, and have encouraged this study. During a period of three years 25,000 tests were made on 67 different American, Japanese, and European rock drills, using, respectively, the Paynter testing machine, and drilling in granite and limestone. Recorded were: air consumption, speed of rotation, torque of rotation, foot-pounds of striking energy, air pressures, input horsepowers, and speed of rock penetration. The author expresses his views on the interrelation of these factors and offers theoretical support, as well, by formulas based upon the mechanics of impact. He discusses the different designs of the valves, cylinders, piston hammers and rotation devices involved in the different types of rock drills, with respect to their merits and defects and offers conclusions about the factors that should be considered in the new design of a superior rock drill. The author&apos;s mathematical demonstrations and arguments for a value of "best feed clearance" of the drill bit from the rock are based upon the hand-operated screw-fed type of hammer drill. Automatic feeds have not been considered in this paper except for the tests on one drifter with air feed, 10 air-feed stopers, and some hand-held blockholers. The following classes of drills, with one of each model, size, or type, were tested: 23 heavy drifters, 34 light drifters and hand-held drills, and 10 stopers. LABOR. conditions have finally caused rock-drilling machines to supplant hand drillers in the Japanese mining industry, and have encouraged this study. During a period of three years 25,000 tests were made on 67 different American, Japanese, and European rock drills, using, respectively, the Paynter testing machine, and drilling in granite and limestone. Recorded were: air consumption, speed of rotation, torque of rotation, foot-pounds of striking energy, air pressures, input horsepowers, and speed of rock penetration. The author expresses his views on the interrelation of these factors and offers theoretical support, as well, by formulas based upon the mechanics of impact. He discusses the different designs of the valves, cylinders, piston hammers and rotation devices involved in the different types of rock drills, with respect to their merits and defects and offers conclusions about the factors that should be considered in the new design of a superior rock drill. The author&apos;s mathematical demonstrations and arguments for a value of "best feed clearance" of the drill bit from the rock are based upon the hand-operated screw-fed type of hammer drill. Automatic feeds have not been considered in this paper except for the tests on one drifter with air feed, 10 air-feed stopers, and some hand-held blockholers. The following classes of drills, with one of each model, size, or type, were tested: 23 heavy drifters, 34 light drifters and hand-held drills, and 10 stopers. Consider an investor who, knowing future costs and revenues, can choose how rapidly to produce from a given mineral source. If the investor elects to make that choice to maximize present value of future profits, how do policies affect the choice? Various alternative policies are examined. Some, such as higher royalty rates, lead to slower production rates than would otherwise obtain. Clearly, the chosen rates of production are policy-dependent. One is wisely counseled to consider how mineral policies affect the rate of production from given sources when analyzing current and alternative policies.

Rates of oxidation were studied for levitation-melted samples of Fe-C, Fe-Si, Fe-C-Si, Fe-C-P, Fe-C-Mn, and Fe-C-S alloys oxidized by mixtures of either 5 or 10 pct O2, in helium at several temperatures in the range 1850o to 2050°C. The concentrations of the oxidized elements decreased linearly with time. Mass transport in the gas phase was found to be the rate-controlling step. Ilowever, a mulliple -film model was necessary to account for the flux of iron and manganese vapor counter to the oxygen flow. THE advent of the basic oxygen and spray-refining processes of steelmaking has generated considerable interest in the kinetics of reactions between oxygen-bearing gases and liquid iron alloys. The object of this research was the determination of the role of mass transport in the gas and metal phases and of surface chemical reactions in the overall oxidation process. Of the reactions for elimination of elements dissolved in liquid iron, the oxidation of carbon has been investigated most extensively. Studies by Fuji and Ura,1 Fuji,&apos; and Gunji et a1.,3 done with pilot-scale basic oxygen furnaces, indicated that mass transport of gaseous oxygen was rate controlling when the metal carbon content was greater than 0.15 to 0.30 pct. When the carbon content was less than this critical amount, diffusion of carbon dissolved in the iron was thought to be rate limiting. L. A. Baker et a1.4,5 levitated samples of iron-carbon alloys and oxidized them in CO-CO2, CO-C02-He, and O2-He atmospheres at 1660°C. These investigators found that the metal carbon concentration decreased linearly with time and their samples exploded when the carbon content fell below about 0.8 pct. They concluded that the rate-limiting step was the transfer of oxidant to the gas-metal interface. A model based on this rate-limiting step predicted decarburization rates within a factor of two of those experimentally observed. The explosion of the samples was attributed to a shift in rate-controlling step from gas-phase mass transport to transport of carbon dissolved in the metal. L. A. Baker and R. G. ward6 and R. Baker7 used freely falling droplets to investigate oxidation kinetics. In both papers, the authors speculated that flame fronts may have been partially responsible for the lack of better agreement between experiment and theory. Swisher and Turkdogan8 oxidized liquid iron having an initial carbon content of 0.97 pct with CO-CO2 and CO-C02-Ar mixtures at 1580°C. They concluded that a surface reaction was the rate controlling step. Iron-silicon alloys have been oxidized by R. Baker7 and Filipov and Martynov.9 R. Baker 7 also studied iron-carbon-silicon alloys falling as liquid droplets through oxygen. He found that the rate of both carbon and silicon oxidation varied inversely with the drop radius. When the initial silicon concentration was greater than 6 pct, the samples cooled during their fall. Manganese oxidation has been studied by R. Baker,7 and by Filipov and Martynov.9 ward10 investigated the loss of manganese from liquid iron under vacuum. He found that mass transport of manganese vapor was rate limiting in argon atmospheres of 0.02 torr to 700 torr pressure. Iron-sulfur alloys were desulfurized with H2-He and H2-Ar mixtures by Peters et al.11 A model based on the transport of H2S from the gas-metal interface into the bulk gas gave fair agreement between the predictions of the model and the experimental results. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Essentially, the technique consisted of using helium-oxygen gas mixtures to oxidize levitated samples of liquid binary and ternary iron-base alloys. Edward Thomas (U.S. Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C.)—This excellent article on an ingenious and successful installation of wooden rock bolts loses much of its effectiveness through an attempt by the authors to establish the general adaptability of this type of support. Possibly because they have only local experience as a guide, they imply erroneously in the first paragraph that the Bureau of Mines has been opposed to wooden bolting, although later in the article reference is made to a Bureau publication on the subject. In 1947 the Bureau of Mines decided to sponsor experiments in roof bolting in coal mines because the experience of the St. Joseph Lead Co. had indicated that this type of roof support appeared to be a roof-fall accident-prevention measure that might be adopted and also effect economies in operating cost. Justification for this belief has been borne out, particularly in coal mining. This program has been carried out under the following general program: 1—The Roof Control Section of the Bureau of Mines has advocated and initiated underground experiments under controlled conditions with many different ideas related to rock bolting since 1947. In no instance has cooperation in developing an idea been refused, no matter how ridiculous it may have seemed at first glance, if it has been requested by a mining company. 2—The Bureau of Mines has no police powers over the selection of roof-support devices and seeks none. 3—At the request of an operator, the Bureau of Mines will make comparative tests on various types of bolts underground and will submit resultant data for the operator&apos;s consideration. 4—Wherever possible, the Bureau publicizes successful installations, so that others may benefit from this experience; however, it is careful not to discriminate between manufacturers of bolts or bolt-installation equipment. Unsuccessful experiments probably should also be publicized, but from a practical standpoint it is usually not feasible. In other words, the role of the Roof Control Section of the Bureau is in line with the original purpose for which the Bureau was first organized: to serve industry through gathering, analyzing, and disseminating factual data. The problem of rock behavior under concentrated loadings has been the subject of a number of studies in the past and has been receiving increasing attention by rock mechanics investigators in recent years. Its application covers various fields, but main interest in its solution has arisen in connection with the problems of drilling, bearing capacity, and rock testing. These widely different purposes and fields of interest probably have been one of the reasons why, in spite of the large amount of published experimental data and several theoretical studies, there are still many points which need further clarification. Another reason for this situation undoubtedly is due to the fact that the rock behavior in indentation is complicated by a great number of influencing factors. Experimental evidence shows that, depending on the rock type (mechanical properties, porosity), environment (ambient effective pressure, pore fluid, temperature), and the type of loading (indenter shape, initial embedment, load level, loading rate), the rock response to indentation may vary within very large limits. The widely different rock behavior has made it impossible up to now to treat the problem with a consistent single mathematical theory, but has required instead a series of simplified models covering only certain most important events in the failure sequence. As far as the theory of rock indentation is concerned, this chapter does not add much new information. Its main purpose is, however, to state the indentation problem in a general manner and to indicate which points need to be studied in more detail before its definite solution is attempted. Also, since excellent reviews of the state-of-art of rock indentation in drilling have recently been given,1-4 this will not be repeated here, and only references pertinent to the points of the problem under study will be quoted.
