Van Stone mine area is situated at the head of Onion Creek on the northwest flank of Gillette Mountain, Stevens County, Washington. The di strict was found during World War I, but the mine did not come into production until 1952. Production to the end of 1965 was 2,242,960 tons of ore that yielded 10,700 tons of lead concentrates and 120,000 tons of zinc concentrates. The area is part of the Selkirk Mountains Zinc-Lead Belt, or Kootenay Arc, extending from near Revelstoke, British Columbia, to Colville, Washington. A thick but incomplete section of Paleozoic marine formations occurs in the Kootenay Arc and is overlain by marine and continental Mesozoic formations. Both are invaded by Late Mesozoic-Tertiary batholiths. The belt is characterized by open complex folding and extensive high-angle and local thrust faulting. Principal ore deposits occur in the highly deformed carbonate rocks of Cambrian age-the Maitlen (Laib) and Metaline formations. The Van Stone mine occurs along a steeply S-shaped fold lying between the Kaniksu Batholith on the west and the Rogers Mountain Fault, a northeast-trending fault on the west flank of the Gillette Mountain Anticline, to the southeast. The fold is cut by northeasttrending faults containing notoriously irregular lamprophyric, diabasic, and pebble dikes. The host rocks, lower Paleozoic dolomites, are decolorized, silicified, and silicated in the mine area. Jasperoid and tremolite are the common alteration minerals. Other gangue minerals are barite, pyrite, brucite, calcite, and, near the batholith, pyrrhotite. Ore minerals are galena, jamesonite, and sphalerite. Ore minerals occur in bunches and pods intergrown with tremolite and jasperoid. Zinc is roughly eight times more abundant than lead. The highest ore outcrops at 3870 feet elevation, and an undeterminable portion has been removed by glacial scour. The lowest drill hole penetration has reached 3220 feet elevation. Oxidation ranges up to several hundred feet in depth and may be most closely related to pre-glacial groundwater circulation. The area of the mine was completely over-ridden by Pleistocene continental glaciers, and the present erosion surface is nearly continuously blanketed by up to 150 feet of glacial outwash.

The Iron Ore Co. of Canada (IOC) has developed a computerized plan analysis method for its open-pit iron mining operations which will eliminate much of the tedious manual drafting of pit design plans performed by engineers and geologists at its two major operational areas near Schefferville, Que., and Labrador City, Nfld. The new technique permits analysis of section or bench plans for a specific ore body, based on drillhole information; preparation of a three-dimensional unit profit matrix for pit design purposes, and storage of extensive ore-block information for other applications. Other advantages include enhanced design accuracy through reduction of human errors normally associated with preparation of large data masses, and by elimination of errors inherent in planimeter-prepared ore block diagrams.

In the foreword by C. K. Leith, Chairman of The Mineral Inquiry, it is pointed out that the ordinary mineral production tables do not show the commercial control, and that some knowledge of the situation is desirable as a background for the consideration of problems involving mineral raw materials. The report consists principally of tables, accompanied by a brief text, giving the production and an analysis of the control, according to nationality, of 18 minerals: aluminum, chromite, copper, iron and steel, lead, manganese ore, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, nitrates, petroleum, potash, silver, sulfur, tin, tungsten, vanadium, and zinc. For the most part, the production figures for 1929 and the latest figures for reserves have been used. When feasible, the control has been shown at the various stages of production; mining, smelting and refining. American capital was dominant in the production of 10 mineral commodities, including six of the most important; British capital, in four instances; while Spanish, German, Chilean or Chinese interests cach led in the control of one. British, French, German, and Dutch capital occupied second place in the control of most of the important minerals. Between two-thirds and three-fourths of the world's mincral production is controlled by British and American capital.

THE copper-silver system presents several points of special interest in the study of segregate structures. The system is simple eutectic, with limited solid solutions terminal with the pure component metals. The extent of solid solubility decreases with decreasing temperature for both the copper-rich and the silver-rich alloys, thus offering a possibility for the formation of Widmanstätten figures and also a possibility for aging after quenching. In contrast to the structures studied previously the structures in this system are unique in their origin, for one terminal solid solution will precipitate the other, and vice versa. In most of the other systems for which crystallographic data on the precipitation (or transformation) process are available, either intermetallic compounds or intermediate phases partake in the decomposition process; the absence of such phases thus distinguishes this system. The lattice structures of the two solid solutions are identical in type, differing in lattice spacing by approximately 10 per cent; because of this it seems difficult if not impossible to predict on the basis of present theory either the outward form of the precipitate or the lattice orientation relationships between matrix and precipitate. The effects of heat transfer on the corrosion behavior of type 304 stainless steel in boiling water have been studied. Heat transfer conditions increase the tendencies of the stainless steel toward stress-corrosion mucking when the water is contaminated with Cl-. Surface preparation is the most important variable in determining the severity of the stress-corrosion problem in water with a given Cl- content. Heat treatment, chemical cleaning, and degree of wet film boiling also affect the corrosion of stainless steels used as heat transfer surfaces in boiling water. An up-paratus for corrosion testing under controlled heat transfer conditions is described. THE principal objective of this investigation was to study the corrosion behavior of AISI Type 304 stainless steel in boiling high-purity water under conditions of heat transfer. The principal variables in the study were: a) boiling conditions: limited boil, agitated boil; b) metallurgical structure: annealed or sensitized; c) surface condition: rolled, pickled, or ground. The results of the study should elucidate the role of heat transfer in the corrosion of stainless steel in boiling high-purity water and provide a base line from which to assess the severity of this type of corrosion. Although there has been an investigation of the effect of heat transfer on the corrosion behavior of stainless steels in alkaline waters,' work on the corrosion of stainless steels under heat transfer has been largely confined to various acid solutions.'-4 Furthermore, the study of the corrosion of stainless steels in high-purity water has been generally restricted to auto-clave and instream testing in superheated (e.g., 300°C) water and steam.5'6 Cooling water problems led to this study of the corrosion behavior of type 304 stainless steel in high-purity water at its atmospheric boiling point. In addition to the effects of heat transfer, this study also considered the influences of the type of boiling,7 metallurgical structure, and surface condition on the corrosion behavior of stainless steel in high-purity water. Two boiling conditions were investigated in this study: a) limiting boiling, i.e., when the heat-transfer surface had just reached the boiling point and boiling nucleated randomly over the specimen surface and b) agitated boiling, i.e., when a mild degree of superheat had been achieved on the specimen surface and boiling occurred generally over the specimen surface. Both boiling conditions are broadly classified as wet-film boiling. Originally, this program included the study of a third type of boiling, dry-film conditions. At dry-film boiling the temperature of the heat transfer surface is high enough so that it is covered with a continuous film of steam. Experimental difficulties made it impossible to study this kind of boiling with the available apparatus. Since surface condition affects heat transfer rates, three typical surfaces were chosen for study: a) as-rolled, the 2B finish received from the supplier, b) as-pickled, 30 min in 8 pct HNO3-1 pct HF, and c) as-ground on 120 grit paper. In order to evaluate the effect of improper heat treatment or welding on hot wall corrosion, both annealed and sensitized mi-crostructure were included in this study. EXPERIMENTAL Test Apparatus. The particular problems of interest in this investigation required a knowledge of the thermal gradient through the test specimen. From this gradient, the heat flux to the surface and the surface temperature could be determined. In order to satisfy this need, an apparatus similar to the boiling-disk apparatus of Fisher and whitney2 was designed. INTRODUCTION The phenomenon of heat-weakening of rock with 10.6 micron radiation from a continuous-wave C02 gas laser has been investigated in detail at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for over 5 years. The programs at MIT have explored the basic nature of the heat-weakening phenomena and rock fracture caused by heating (e.g., Refs. 1 and 2), and have resulted in quantitative estimates of the relationship between the amount and parer level of heating and the resulting decrease in the modulus of rupture of a rock beam in a three-point bend test (Ref. 3). Results of the tests reported in Ref. 3 indicate a greater than 90% reduction in the modulus of rupture for granite beams heat-weakened by a laser. These results prompted the U. S. Department of Transportation to seek an assessment of the expected feasibility of employing the heat- weakening concept in a full-scale tunnel boring operation. Present- day continuous rock-tunneling machines have demonstrated tunneling time and cost savings over drill-and-blast methods, when used in rock types that are easily broken by the cutters. This note describes a method for revealing micro-structures in tantalum through an {hkl} effect which was found during a study involving amorphous and crystalline tantalum oxides. Three steps are involved. First, an amorphous film of Ta2O5 is formed anodically1 on the surfaces of the tantalum. The amount needed depents on the thickness of the substrate tantalum; 1600Å of oxide, however, is generally satisfactory in the 1/2 -mil (12 µ) to 3-mil thickness range. The film at this point is uniform in color. Second, the anodized specimen is heated to 800°C in. vacuo during a period of a few minutes and held at temperature for 5 min. During such a treatment some oxygen leaves the oxide through dissolution into the substrate tantalum (e.g., at 10-8 Torr oxide films thinner than about 800 completely disappear on 5-mil strip). Considerable crystallization of the amorphous oxide also occurs adjacent to the metal/oxide interface but not throughout the oxide thickness. The thickness of oxide needed as a residue is not too critical; values between 500 and 1000Å (optical estimate') may be most useful. (The presence of a residual oxide layer after the heat treatment usually is not apparent; in fact, in most instances the surfaces have a metallic appearance. This can be the case also for thicker residual films needed in the detection of a crystalline oxide phase by surface X-ray diffraction—e.g., if the initial oxide film is 3000Å thick, enough crystalline oxide is formed for X-ray detection.) The third step eliminates the metallic appearance at the surface and reveals (or produces) a varied colored film of tantalum oxide. Two methods can be used and both will be illustrated. If the specimen is dipped in 48 pct HF for a few seconds, the tantalum is found to be covered with a multicolored oxide. Moreover the colors correlate with the grain structure of the substrate tantalum through an orientation dependence of the type illustrated in Fig. 1, where results of an orientation analysis by the Laue X-ray method have been plotted. Other film conditions would have provided a different set of colors for the same orientations. Any such correlation, however, provides a basis for a qualitative assessment of the distribution of orientations in a large sample. The cold-rolled structure of tantalum foil produced by a recrystallization anneal and a cold-rolling reduction of 95 pct is not easily obtained by usual metal-lographic methods.' The structure, however, is easily revealed by the present technique, Fig. 2. The alternative third step is to reanodize the specimen. The optical nature of the final anodic film depends on the presence of the crystalline oxide phase; color variations indicate optical thickness variations in the film. As the reanodization voltage is increased from zero, straw and light brown colors appear (as usual), followed now by variations in color from grain to grain depending on {hkl} orientation. Suitable end points, which are determined by voltage and time, are easily established. Fig. 3, for example, shows the grain structure developed in 5-mil tantalum strip during a 30-min re-crystallization and grap-growth anneal at 1800°C. An anodic film of 1600Å thickness was added prior to the special 800°C anneal. Reanodization was done at constant current density (near 0.2 ma per sq cm) in an aqueous solution of H3PO4 (0.01 pct) and was terminated after the initial brown colors were replaced by a deep blue at approximately 30 v. Although good grain contrast can be obtained with bright field illumination, even greater contrast for black and white micrographs may be obtained with polarized light, as in Fig. 3.

The yield strength of annealed tungsten was found to have a strain rate exponent 12 times as great as that of low carbon steel. The effects of temperature and strain rate could be correlated through the Zener-Hollomon parameter with a heat of activation associated with yielding of 32,000 cal per g-atom. This heat of activation is independent of strain although both the temperature and strain rate dependence of the yield strength vary with strain. MOST metals have mechanical properties that are relatively insensitive to strain rate, especially at temperatures below that at which creep is important. In iron and molybdenum," however, relatively large strain rate effects are observed in the temperature range where the rapid increase in yield strength occurs which leads to the ductile to brittle transition. In this temperature range Zener and Hollomon' have suggested that the effects of strain rate and temperature T on the yield strength could be correlated through a single parameter, P, in the following manner where Q is a heat of activation characteristic of the metal and associated with some unspecified relaxation process. They also observed that if the temperature is restricted to a relatively narrow range— below room temperature for steel—that the logarithm of the yield strength could be expressed as a linear function of the logarithm of P. From this relation the logarithm of stress should be a linear function of the logarithm of the strain rate at constant temperature: where r will be referred to herein as the strain rate exponent. At a constant strain rate the logarithm of stress should be a linear function of l/T, ay(e = C) ~ eT [4] where q = Qr [5] and is referred to herein as the temperature exponent. These equations have been found to relate the effects of temperature and strain rate on the yield strength of molybdenum in the temperature range wherein the ductile to brittle transition occurs, —75° to +150°C.2 Bechtold and Shewmon3 have shown recently that the ductile to brittle transition in annealed tungsten occurs in the temperature range +150° to +350°C. Need for a standard of ualuration.—There should be an accepted method for evaluating the different kinds of bituminous coals based on their carbon just as that for iron ores is based on iron. Variation in the classes of coals and their desirability fol the different industrial uses is analagous to the case of iron ores. The iron people have developed a standard. In the past coals have not been intelligently distributed because the public has not been informed as to its uses. Many operators have known nothing about the final disposal of the coal shipped from their mines. Sales agents and retailers have had no means of evaluating coals except to make the price as high as the market will stand. Producers and distributors need to know how much more valuable the coals would be if prepared so as to contain less objectionable material. Mr. Swectser cnlletl on the Goal and Coke Committee of the Institnte to organize a study through producers and users to develop a method scientifically and comnereially sound E. A holbrook said that the information exists but the public is unwilling to investigate. He praised Ashley's1 nomenclature of the different kind of coal which has been accepted by the Coal Mining Institute of America and recommended to the American Enginecring Standards Commitee. G. S. Rice pointed out the wider variety and distribution of consumption of coal compared to Iron ore. C'. M. Young approved Mr. Sweetser's remarks and hoped lor a research institution, probably endowed, to study utilization of coal after it comes from the ground. Mr. Sweetser cited incidents to prove his former statements. He said that a reduction of 1 per cent. ash in the coal would cut down the cost of pig iron at a blast furnace 30 c. a ton, that the coal men should tell what the iron men would have to pay to get better coal. C. S. Smith has described a method for measuring the relative values of different solid-solid and solid-liquid interfacial tensi0ns. When a polyphase alloy is held at an elevated temperature, individual particles of each phase adjust their shapes and minimize the interfacial energy. Wherever three interfaces meet, the dihedral angles are such that the three interfacial tensions, considered as forces, are in equilibrium. When the angles between three forces in equilibrium at a point are known, it is possible to determine any two in terms of the third. In this way ratios of interfacial tensions have been .obtained. The value of a given interfacial tension ratio was found to be independent of the alloy system from which it was determined. Smith also has employed the method when one of the phases is liquid. Laboratory-scale decopperizing experiments with multiple sulfur addifions were conducted at 330°C on ternary Pb-Cu alloys containing, as the third elenlent, Sn, Ag, As, Sb, Bi, Zn, and Au, common impurities in lead blast-furnace bullion. For silver and tin, an increased rate and extent of 'cofifier removal was obsert3ed. The elements As, Sb, Zn, Au, and Bi had no effect or less effect as compared to sulfur additions with no i)npurily additions. THE production of primary lead in the blast furnace yields an impure lead frequently containing such impurities as copper. antimony. arsenic. tin, gold, silver iron, oxygen. and sulfur. By cooling this lead to a temperature near its melting point. most of the iron, sulfur, and oxygen and part of the other impurities are removed in the form of a dross. With incipient solidification of the lead, the copper concentration wil have been reduced to 0.02 to 0.05 pct. depending upon the concentration of the other impurities. according to Davey.' Since copper interferes with the treatment of silver after the desilverizing process, it is desirable to decrease the copper content of the lead still fur-ther before the lead is desilvered. The decopperizing of the lead is accomplished by stirring a small quantity. approximately 0.1 pct. of elemental sulfur into the lead at a temperature near its melting point, 330" to 360°C. The copper is removed as a copper sulfide which constitutes a small fraction of a voluminous dross consisting mostly of lead sulfide and entrained metallic lead. The residual copper concentration following the decopperizing operation is frequently as low as 0.001 to 0.005 pct. Thi fact has aroused considerable interest because the equilibrium copper concentration of lead in contact with solid PbS and solid Cu2S is at least an order of magnitude greater, 0.05 pct Cu at 330C. 1, 2 Most investigators have suggested that various impurities in the lead bullion are responsible for the very low copper concentrations frequently encountered in practice. There is little agreement, however? as to which of the impurities are helpful and which are not.3"11 Also. few investigators have sought to explain the mechanisms responsible for the removal of copper to very low concentrations. Willis and Blanks9 have proposed that a nonstoichiometric copper-deficient cuprous sulfide forms in place of the supposed Cu2S. Being copper-deficient, this sulfide phase would possess a low copper activity, and the diffusion of copper dissolved in the liquid lead into this phase would be greatly facilitated. Pin and wagner2 have investigated the removal of copper from liquid lead by studying the effect of impurity-doped lead sulfide on the decopperizing of pure Pb-Cu alloys. Samples of the doped PbS were held in contact with copper-saturated lead for 1 week at 33'7°C. They reported a beneficial effect on decopperizing with bismuth and antimony and no effect with tin or silver. which is directly opposite to the results observed in practice and those reported by Davey 3 and this studv. The purpose of this paper is to describe the effects of certain additive elements on the extent to which copper can be removed fro111 liquid lead by successive additions of sulfur. The impurity elements were added individually to prepared Pb-Cu alloys. The resulting ternary alloys as well as a binary Pb-Cu alloy were then decopperized with repeated additions of sulfur. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Granulated test lead with a purity of 99.999 pct and the additive elements Cu. Ag. Sb. Bi. Zn. Sn. and Au with purities of 99.99 pct were American Smelting and Refining Co. research-grade materials. The major impurities in the lead were 1 ppm each of iron and copper. all others being less than 1 ppm. The arsenic used was a technical-grade arsenic of 98+ pct purity. Reagent-grade flowers of sulfur were melted under argon to provide small pieces free of fines. Apparatus. The decopperizing experiments were carried out in a 25-mm-OD by 375-mm-long Pyrex tube sealed at one end. The tube was mounted vertically in a resistance-heated. hinge-type tube furnace controlled to within ±lcC. Temperature measurement was accomplished by means of a standardized chromel-alumel thermocouple sealed into the base of a silica. paddle-type stirring rod. All decopperizing experiments were carried out under an argon atmosphere. Procedure. A Pb-Cu starting alloy containing 0.05 pet Cu was prepared under carbon and poured into cold tap water to produce shot. The ternary alloys were prepared by melting together 100 g of the starting alloy and a sufficient amount of the impurity element to yield the desired concentration. The resulting alloy was then homogenized in a Pyrex tube at 450C with continuous stirring. The furnace temperature was then lowered to the operating temperature of 330°C. When thermal equilibrium had been obtained at the operating temperature, individual additions of 0.2 pct (0.2 g) of solid sulfur were added to the melt and stirred in. Stirring was continued for a period of 3 min. discontinued for 5 min. and resumed for the remaining 2 min of a 10-min cycle. This cycle was repeated for as many sulfur additions as desired. When the decopperizing experiment had been completed the lead bullion was quenched and samples of the bullion and dross phases were taken for analysis. Results. Discussion of the paper of EDWARD G. NORTON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 1915, pp. 93 to 102. G. D. HARRIS, Ithaca, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary *).¬Since I have on several occasions1 expressed at length my general views on this interesting subject, it seems fitting that I endeavor here to comment as briefly as possible on a few points suggested by the paper. Doubtless you all know of the rather extensive publications of Lachmann on mid-European salines and his scarcely successful, attempt to make the phenomena presented by our domes fit. into his "Exzeme" theory based on studies of European phenomena. This paper is a most welcome indication that scientific America is very much alive to the difficulties that have been encountered in attempts already made to explain the origin of the salt domes in the lower Mississippi embayment region. Praiseworthy, too, is the attempt to explain these phenomena by agencies still in operation. I may, perhaps, be permitted to state here that a former student of mine, and co-worker in Louisiana, A. C. Veatch, is now interested in the Algerian region, where it would seem similar dome-phenomena are to be found, and hopes may well

Discontinuous yielding in tensile tests was observed in V-O alloys in the temperature ranges of 150° to 175°C and also 350° to 400°C. The magnitude and intensity of the serrations were found to vary considerably with oxygen content. Maxima were observed in tensile and yield strengths and in the strain-hardening coefficient at the higher temperature only. The strain rate sensitivity was observed to be negative between 150° and 400°C. THIS investigation was undertaken to study the effect of oxygen on the tensile properties of iodide vanadium in the temperature range of 25o to 450°C. Brown1 observed an increase in strength between room temperature and 400°C in vanadium metal, and found that oxygen and nitrogen had a rather pronounced effect on the strength and ductility. A maximum in the tensile strength was observed by Rostoker et al.2 near 300oC and by Pugh3 around 450°C for calcium-reduced vanadium. Pugh also found a maximum in the yield strength and in the strain-hardening exponent, and minima in the elongation and strain rate sensitivity at the same temperature. Eustice and Carlson4 reported the appearance of serrations in the stress-strain curves between 140° and 180°C in iodide vanadium containing 600 ppm O. These anomalies in the mechanical properties indicate that strain aging occurs in vanadium, but the impurity or impurities responsible for the above-mentioned effects have not been identified. The phenomenon of strain aging is usually characterized by the return of the yield point after interruption of a strength test. In the temperature range where strain aging occurs, the yield and tensile strengths attain maximum values, elongation and strain rate sensitivity exhibit minima, and discontinuous yielding is generally observed in the stress-strain curve. Cottrell5, 6 has postulated that strain aging is due to the migration of solute atoms to dislocation sites to produce locking after the dislocations have broken free from their impurity atmospheres during the initial yielding. At the strain-aging temperature the process is a dynamic one in which the solute impurity atoms diffuse to the vicinity of the moving disloca- tion producing "locking" which gives rise to maxima in the tensile strength and serrations in the elongation curves. Cottrel17 has noted that discontinuous yielding in iron occurs when the diffusion coefficient of nitrogen, D, and the strain rate, i, are related by D = 10-9 €. EXPERTMENTAL PROCEDURE The vanadium metal employed in this study was prepared by the iodide refining process as described by Carlson and owen.8 A representative analysis of the vanadium used in this investigation was: 150 ppm O, <5 ppm N, <1 ppm H, 150 ppm C, 150 ppm Fe, 70 ppm Cr, <50 ppm Si, 30ppm Cu, 20 ppm Ni, <20 ppm Ca, <20 ppm Mg and <20 ppm Ti. Alloys containing from 200 to 1800 ppm O, all of which lie in the solid solution range of the V-O system, were prepared by arc melting vanadium together with portions of a high-oxygen master alloy. The master alloy was prepared by tamping pure V2O5 into holes drilled in a vanadium ingot and arc melting this five or six times in an inert gas atmosphere, inverting the button between each melting step. The oxygen content of the master alloy was then determined by vacuum fusion analysis. Vanadium containing less than 150 ppm O was prepared in the following manner. A bar of iodide vanadium was deoxidized by sealing it in a tantalum crucible with a few grams of high-purity calcium. This was held at 1100°C for 4 days to allow time for the oxygen to diffuse to the surface and to react with the calcium vapors. The calcium oxide product was later dissolved from the surface of the bar with dilute acetic acid. In this way vanadium containing from 20 to 50 ppm O was prepared. Sample Preparation. The are-melted ingots were cold swaged into 3/16-in. diam rods and these were machined into cylindrical tensile specimens with a reduced section of 1.00-in. length and 0.120-in. diam. The test specimens were annealed for 4 hr at 900°C in a dynamic vacuum of mm of Hg to remove hydrogen from the metal. This recrystal-lization treatment produced a uniformly fine-grained structure with a mean grain size of approximately 0.06-mm diam. The oxygen contents reported in this paper were determined by a vacuum fusion analysis of the tensile specimens after testing. Analyses for other interstitial or metallic impurities showed no significant changes from that of the original material. Tension Tests. OLIVER C. RALSTON, Salt Lake City, Utah (communication to, the Secretary*).-This paper has appealed to me as being one of the most lucid, well-connected and complete papers on this subject which has been published. To be sure, the concepts called upon in an explanation of the flotation process by these authors are mostly old ones which have been more or less discussed in previous literature, but they have nevertheless been assembled in a most constructive and suggestive manner. We find a new contribution to flotation theory in the effect of fine particles increasing the viscosity of the interfacial film between a liquid and a gas. This phenomenon has been variously hinted at but never definitely stated in accepted scientific terms. The discussion of "contact angles". is very clear and will doubtless be welcomed by those who have not had the opportunity to investigate the literature on this subject, but it is unfortunate that the "hysteresis of the contact angle," observed by Sulman and reported some years ago, is not mentioned or explained. A few other points need discussion in order to call attention to the fact that, while this paper is the best discussion of the subject which has yet appeared, all of the truth has not yet been told.

WITH imperfect instruments it is impossible to make accurate surveys; the results are inaccurate maps, with their attendant consequences. The design of the writer is to describe an improved form of tripod head, and certain defects in an English transit and a miners&apos; dial, with the method taken to remedy the defects of the transit. When the present transit superseded the surveyor&apos;s compass, there was one special objection brought against it, and with some show of reason ; namely, that the tripod of the compass with its ball and socket motion, allowed a quicker levelling-up (and, consequently, more work) than was possible with the transit. To this objection it was replied, that the ball and socket would not allow the instrument to be levelled with the same degree of precision that could be attained with the levelling screws, and that if time was sacrificed greater accuracy was attained. Nevertheless, it is a well-known fact that in this country, and especially in England, the compass or miners&apos; dial holds its ground solely from its rapid adjustment. Ever since the introduction of the transit, efforts have been made to give to this instrument the same facility of levelling possessed by the compass or dial, and the same means have been tried, i. e., a . ball and socket motion, since a modification of this in some form was the only method that would answer. The upper part of a transit is, however, much heavier than the corresponding parts of a compass, and, therefore, requires more binding power, which cannot be ob¬tained with an ordinary ball and socket joint. It has been a study with instrument-makers to combine the facility of these two tripods -the quickness of the ball and socket with the steadiness and accuracy of the screws; but in all attempts in this direction the ball and socket of the compass has been literally followed, the entire stability of the instrument depending upon the friction of the ball in its socket. MAGNETITE deposits in the Eastern States have been mined uninterruptedly since pre-Revolutionary War days. The industry, thriving in normal times, was given impetus in all periods of tumult, and continued to advance and expand, until the Lake Superior ores came into production. A period of comparative quiet existed until increased freight rates, together with increased mining costs on Lake Region ores, permitted the magnetites again to compete. This, coupled with World War demands, created unpre¬cedented activity. Producing plants were at their peak, new mines were equipped and put in operation and the industry pushed production beyond the absorption point. Ore stocks were tremendous, internal competition severe, and a great increase in import of European ores brought the industry to a low ebb in 1923.

Reply to discussion of the paper of C. W. Washburne, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1914 (Trans., xlviii, 687 to 694 (1914)). C. W. WASHBURNE, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*).-Professor Lane makes an interesting contribution to the study. of chloride waters, in saying that calcium chloride waters occur not only in the greenstones of the Lake Superior copper mines, but also in the interbedded -felsitic conglomerates and "in far-removed sandstones, e.g., near Whitefish lake, and Ontonagon, in the Michigan iron mines, and in the Storm King granite." Surely these are not connate waters preserved from the Algonkian sea, assuming that the Algonkian sediments are marine rather than continental. Finding the same type of water in the Storm King granite points rather toward an abyssal source. The possible connection of these waters with the magma of the greenstone is immaterial, although some basic calcic magma is the most probable source. It is to be expected that the ascending water of the region would be found not only in the greenstones, but in all the rocks which it could penetrate. The ascent of water of this kind along vertical passages, and the consequent addition of a common ion: to the circulating sedimentary salt solutions, would explain the precipitation and localization of the "giant, concretionary" salt plugs of the Gulf Coast, without making the ex-excessive demand for an improbable quantity of salt in the adjacent sediments that is required by the unmodified theory of Harris. With-out such a precipitating medium most of the dissolved sodium chloride would have been lost by passing on to the surface without precipitation. The base to which the chlorine ions were attached is immaterial, providing they were sufficiently concentrated, but the presence of the chlorides of calcium and magnesium in the solutions is indicated by the associated bodies of secondary dolomite.

TWO papers, "Calcium, Strontium, and Barium Metals," by Charles Hardy and Paul M. Tyler, and "The Mining of Gems and Ornamental Stones by American Indians," by Sydney H. Ball, were presented before the Rare Minerals and Metals group at its session Tuesday afternoon in the Auditorium. Donald M. Liddell, chairman, presided. Mr. Tyler summarized the first paper, outlining the uses, history, occurrence, manufacture, production and trade, markets and prices of the three metals. In discussion, in response to the chairman&apos;s query on "what are they doing in Russia with calcium, strontium, and barium," Guy C. Riddell replied that nothing is being done on a production basis. The great rare metals plant in Moscow is active, however, on other elements. "They are making radium chloride, uranium oxide, vanadium, cadmium, tungsten, molybdenum, selenium, antimony compounds; and mercury, nickel and arsenic are under production at interior plants. The rare metals plant is busily conducting research on beryllium, rhenium, lithium, bismuth, strontium and zirconium. These are the main rare metal activities. Much hard-alloy work. for cutting and facing, is under way:

FORM of ore bodies, strength of wall rock, and quantity of water that must be handled differ so greatly in the various districts in which the Corporation operates that a variety of mining methods have to be employed. All are underground, however, with the exception of glory holes at Cerro de Pasco from which siliceous silver pacos ore is obtained. In general, the ors is in many relatively small bodies unsuitable for hulk mining, such as caving or top slicing. The strength of the rock and ore rarely permit open stopes, though shrinkage is successfully used on various veins with strong walls, particularly in, Casapalca. Horizontal cut and-fill and square-set stoping with careful filling are the principal methods employed, with the necessarily higher cost for supplies and labor offset as much as possible by care in the avoidance of dilution. The mines at both Morococha and Casapalca are notoriously wet, and even at Cerro de Pasco the quantity of water was enough to retard deep development until the perfection of electric pumps. In Morococha particularly, the extension of successive levels, first from adits of moderate length, then from shafts and heavy pumping installations on the 750 and 1000 levels, and finally by the 30,564-ft. Kingsmill tunnel, was one of the most difficult and long continued fights against water and resulting heavy ground that is recorded in mining history.
