LIKE nearly everything else, mining geology has been reconverting. Many geologists had been in military and other government service. Many more, with mining companies, had been working primarily toward increasing production from known reserves. All of these are turning now toward their normal peacetime endeavor-the search for new ore; for most mining companies, finding themselves with accumulated deficits in development work, are more than ready to go ahead with their postwar plans made a year or more ago but still stalled at the close of 1945 for lack of man power. These plans include not merely development in the old home camp but also wide exploration for new prospects both domestic and foreign. Most of the large concerns have geologists and engineers in the field in the United States, despite the outlook for higher mining costs here, and at least half a dozen strong American companies are already investigating opportunities abroad, notwithstanding past unhappy experiences in certain Latin-American nations which have welcomed capital but later found means of preventing investors from reaping the reward of their enterprise. A few of these new foreign expeditions are following well-planned programs, but too many, in their haste to get any sort of footing, are proceeding without well-considered policy. with the result that their geologists can do little more than desultory scouting.

As soon as the likelihood of American participation in the war was established, and in spite of the fact that we can produce almost as much as all other countries combined, the demand for prompt deliveries of iron and steel products from American factories began to exceed their utmost capacity, and, after fifteen months of practically full operation, has continued to do so. Therefore, it would seem worth while to review some of the aspects of the supply and demand for steel as well as the efforts that are being made to bring them into balance. It is still being debated as to whether the situation should be defined as a real shortage that will persist through the emergency period or as a temporary one than can be relieved by less drastic measures than a Government-sponsored program of expanding existing plants and building new ones.

The slags derived from the smelting of lead and copper ores are composed essentially of silicates. The problems arising from the smelting of these ores consequently involve the study of silicate fusions. In the absence of specific knowledge concerning the compounds occurring in slags, it has been the practice of metallurgists to treat them in terms of their total chemical composition. Slags have been classified as monosilicates, bisilicates, sesquisilicates, and subsilicates according to the relative amounts of oxygen in the acid and basic radicles of the hypothetical salt produced. While this has been a useful guide to metallurgists in computing the furnace charges, it falls far short of a basis for the scientific investigation of slags. In order to understand the nature of a slag as a whole it is necessary to learn the physical and chemical properties of the mineral compounds which go to make up that slag. The efficiency with which an ore is smelted in a furnace depends primarily on the physical properties of the compounds formed during the operation. When the melting points and fields of stability of each of the mineral compounds in slags have been established, it will be possible to determine the properties of any given slag by examining the nature and amounts of its mineral constituents. Earlier Investigations In 1884 and succeeding years an extensive survey of lead and copper furnace slags was made in Europe by Vogt, and a large part of the present knowledge of the subject is due to his publications.' Vogt's interest in artificial fusions was directed primarily towards the explanation of problems in igneous and economic geology and his subsequent works have been confined wholly to that subject.

It is a time-honored custom in this, as in other kindred bodies, for the retiring President on giving place to his successor, after a year of official duties which have been the means of directing his attention in a more than usual degree to the work and interests of the Association, to report the results of his observations from this outlook, and the thoughts that may be suggested by the view. In looking out over the many fields of activity within the range of this Institute, the attention may be arrested by special features marking recent progress and development, or such as by their meager outline or lack of important detail stand in less pleasing contrast, or. even form unsightly objects in the view. It may be that the special field and particular work in which one is engaged will, when observed from the more distant standpoint, or in the light of the whole outlook of the profession, assume a different aspect or develop features of new interest and importance. In this way some special object may suggest to the observer a, fitting theme for the occasion. To others, again, an outline of the whole view may seem a more useful subject for study and review. All fields are examined and the wide horizon of the whole profession scanned to note and report whatever is new in knowledge and practice—the new permanent bench-marks that appear near the horizon designating ground definitely located; the stakes which mark reconnoissance into new territory, and even the prominent objects that faintly appear through the mist of the distant atmosphere, and which may serve later on as points of attachment for the advancing lines of survey into the unknown. Philip Argall, Denver Col. (communication to the Secretary): Dr. Raymond claims (Trans., xxiii., 560)) that my statement (p. 557) regarding the crystallization of iron "is beyond question incorrect." He says: "It is not even settled that vibration will crystallize iron under any conditions." While admitting that authorities differ on the possibility of cold crystallization of iron, I believe it is a settled and undisputed fact that vibration in the presence of heat will crystallize iron. Bloxam and Huntington say :* " Vibration assists 'in converting fibrous metal (iron) back into a crystalline state when heated, a lower temperature sufficing than in the absence of vibration." Mr. A. F. Hill, summing up a very exhaustive review upon the crystallization of iron and steel, pronounces against crystallization, but only at temperatures below 900' F. Mr. Howe, discussing ,the breakage of a 20-foot porter-bar with a crystalline fracture, suggests that it was attributable to heat, jointly with the jar. We see, then, that vibration of heated iron bars will induce crystallization and consequent change of structure. Referring to my statement, I wish to point out, that I was discussing the vibration of stamps arid should have said, "vibration under all such conditions," etc. That is, vibration attended with sharp blows, such as a stamp-stem is subjected to, will crystallize iron; yet I believe that intense vibration under any condition will

TRONA, Calif., is a miniature urban community of some 3500 people, located on the northwest shore of dry Searles Lake in the extreme northwest corner of San Bernardino County, approximately 186 miles north and east of Los Angeles. Since it is situated on the Mojave Desert, a typically desert climate prevails with wide variations in temperature between day and night, extreme daytime summer heat, and cool to cold winters. Rainfall averages somewhat less than 4 in. per year, and dust storms are common. The rate of evaporation, .however, is great, amounting to 6 to 9 ft of water per year. The extremely low humidity makes the summer heat of 110°F tolerable with only a mild, temporary discomfort. Nature of Deposit During the periods when Searles Basin was flooded, the waters that passed through Indian Wells Valley spread out to form a broad, shallow lake providing, in effect, a settling basin for suspended sediment. The drainage into the deeper and more isolated Searles Basin thus was clarified to a great degree before concentration began. Today, the elevation of the dry surface of Searles Lake is 1618 ft, and the salt deposit measures 5x7 miles. At the eastern and northeastern margins of the main playa zone and just at the foot of the alluvial slope of sand and coarser wash from the Slate Range mountains, a rim of crusted salts rises a few feet above the level of the flat. The deposit is a saline efflorescence composed of salts that were presumably brought up with rising ground waters to be deposited at the surface by solar evaporation. This deposit consists chiefly of trona, and it is after this Trona Reef that the town Trona was named. Strip mining operations have been conducted in the past at infrequent intervals for the recovery of crude trona salts. The main focal point of interest in Searles Lake from a commercial standpoint is the main salt body located almost centrally in the basin. The exposed portion of this porous saline deposit covers approximately 12 sq miles and averages 71 ft deep. Its interstitial voids, which constitute 50 pct of the total volume, are permeated with a brine, which is in equilibrium with the soluble salt deposits. The brine is the raw material for the operations of the American Potash and Chemical Corp. plant at Trona, shown in Fig. 1. The soluble salt deposits are of interest for their potential values in future technologic development. The brine, which is stratified according to slight differences in density, stands usually within 6 in. of the surface of this exposed, firm, salt body. The surface is usually dry and will support the weight of heavy mobile units and drilling equipment. Occasionally, however, surface waters from the higher watersheds encroach upon the main salt body during infrequent periods of precipitation on the surrounding mountains. This water dissolves surface salt, becomes a dilute brine, and has been observed to stand as high as 18 in. above the salt surface when undisturbed. Windstorms will shift the water back and forth across the lake surface. The exposed salt body is surrounded by additional submerged areas of commercial soluble salt deposits covering some 20 sq miles, hidden from view by marginal playa mud. These vary in depth up to as much as 30 ft. Thus, the outline of exposed and submerged salt deposits of commercial value is estimated to cover a total area of 32 sq miles, which is roughly circular but slightly elongated from northwest to southeast. It has been estimated that each square mile contains about 100 million tons% f alkali salts. The results of drill borings in the past 15 years have brought to light the interesting fact that the main salt body lies superimposed on an impervious mud deposit from 10 to 15 ft thick containing relatively little soluble salt. Under this deposit lies a second soluble salt body 35 ft deep. The lower salt body is interspersed with numerous insoluble mud lenses and its composition is considerably different from that of the primary, or main salt deposit. Recent drill borings have not penetrated beyond 300 ft. They have, however, revealed that underlying the lower salt body, the mud sediments carry deposited minerals of trona, nahcolite, mirabilite and much less soluble carbonates or sulphates of calcium and/ or magnesium. This structure is shown in Fig. 2. Current Lake Survey Program Several hundred holes have been drilled in the deposit. However, to carry out a thorough and carefully correlated study of the composition of the soluble salts and other minerals in the dry lake basin, a drilling program was inaugurated recently and is now nearing completion. In this survey, pattern drill holes are sunk at regular lh-mile intervals to a depth of approximately 150 ft. Drilling equipment consists of a No. 51 C. P.

The flow stress of a series of Ni-Cr-A1 alloys consisting of a dispersion of y' (based on Ni3Al) in a rnatrix of nickel-base solid solution y has been measured at temperatures up to 950°C as a fwzction of the volume fraction of y'. At high temperatures the flow stress is controlled by the amount of Y' in the alloy, i.e., the higher the volume fraction of y', the greater is the flow stress. This simple relationship is not obeyed at low temperatures in so far as a peak in the flow stress-volume fraction relation occurs at about 25 pct y'. The variation in the mechanical properlies of these alloys as a function of both temperature and volume fraction of y' has been correlated with changes in distribution of both the dislocations and y'. The results are interpreted on the basis that at low temperatures the y matrix is strengthened significantly bv the presence of a hyperfine y' precipitate due to decomposition on cooling; at high temperatures the y matrix is a single phase of low strength. It is clearly recognized that the high temperature strength of most nickel-base superalloys depends upon a dispersion of the ordered fcc phase y', based on Ni3A1, in a fcc solid solution matrix y based on nickel. Although the volume fraction of y' varies widely from about 0.2 in Nimonic 80A to about 0.6 in Mar-M200, all such nickel-base alloys manifest an unusual insensi-tivity of the flow stress with respect to temperature. In Mar-M200 for example, the 0.2 pct flow stress remains essentially constant from room temperature to 750°C. The conclusion has been drawn1 that the characteristically low temperature dependence of the flow stress of y-y' nickel-base alloys is obtained when the state of dispersion of y' is such that dislocations are forced to cut through the y' particles at the onset of yielding. When the spacing between the y' particles is so large that the flow stress is controlled by dislocation bowing between particles, then the initial flow stress decreases progressively with an increase in temperature at a rate determined by changes in elastic properties. The same conclusion is inherent in the detailed, mechanistic model of the deformation process in commercial superalloys which has been developed by Copley and ear' in which the temperature independent flow stress is attributed primarily to the contribution of the antiphase boundary energy created in the y' particles during deformation. In this theory the temperature insensitivity of the flow stress is a reflection of the constant antiphase boundary energy as a function of temperature. An important microstructural parameter that is relevant to the explanations that have been suggested' to account for the temperature insensitivity of the flow stress is the volume fraction of y'. To vary the latter to any significant extent in a given commercial alloy is clearly difficult. However, it is possible in a relatively simple Ni-Al-Cr ternary system which manifests analogous microstructures in terms of the distribution of y' in y and contains specific alloys which have flow properties that depend on temperature in a manner quite similar to their more complex commercial counterparts. Hornbogen et . have studied precipitation phenomena and deformation mechanisms in such alloys but only where the y' volume fraction was small (less than 0.2) and the y' particle size varied from less than 100A up to a maximum of -1000A. In the present study, a series of alloys was prepared in which the volume percent of y' at 900°C was varied from 0 to 100 pct with the y' particle size (of the order 0.5 p) comparable to the sizes obtained in commercial superalloys. Particular attention has been given to the relationship between variations in the volume fraction and distribution of y' and the temperature dependence of the flow stress EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The Ni-Cr-Al system was selected because it is well characterized, bears a close relationship to commercial alloys, and offers the advantage of an extra degree of freedom over a binary system. In the present investigation, a series of alloys across the tie line between NisA1 and Ni3Cr (Ni3Cr is not an in-termetallic compound, the nomenclature is only used to designate the composition) were vacuum cast. The pseudobinary6 and the composition of the alloys used are shown in Fig. 1. It is important to note that the compositions of the y phase and the y' phase in the two-phase alloys was always the same. Alloy compositions were selected from the binary diagram, Fig. 1, in order that aging at 900°C would produce from 0 (100 pct y) to 100 pct y' by volume percent. (The size of the y' particles produced during the equilibrium aging treatment increased as the volume fraction of y' increased, ranging from about 0.2 p at low volume fractions up to about 0.8 p at the highest volume fraction.) The y' phase is based on the inter-metallic compound Ni,A1 which has the fcc LIZ type superlattice structure, and chromium substitutes for aluminum in the structure. The y phase is a disordered fcc solid solution. The alloys were heat treated at 1150°C for 2 hr, air cooled to room temperature, and finally annealed for 16 hr at 900°C. The rods were then centerless ground to 0.25 in. diam and cut into compression samples 0.5 in. long. The compression tests were made on an In-stron machine at a strain rate of 7 x 10"4 sec-'. A rapid heating radiant heat furnace was used which minimized the heating and temperature stabilization time to 10 min for the highest testing temperature. All the tests were stopped after 5 pct plastic strain.

The embrittling effects of oxygen, ozone, nitrogen, air, and surface residues, on NaCl has been investigated. The embrittlement by ozone and oxygen was found to be associated with the formation of a NaClO3 surface compound. In these cases the initial crack that was responsible for fracture (in a bend test) always nucleated at the corners between the tension and side faces. The behavior of air was very erratic and on certain days did not produce enzbrittlement. During these periods, crystals that had become embrittled by the ozone treatment completely recovered their ductility after a short exposure to the ambient atmosphere, It was established many years ago1 that considerable ductility could be obtained in NaCl single-crystal specimens if the crystal surfaces were dissolved in water either during or immediately prior to the test. The original interpretation of this effect by Joffe attributed the enhanced ductility to the removal of surface microcracks by dissolution. Later investigations2'3 have suggested that the exclusion of air from the specimen surface is the criterion for extensive plastic flow prior to fracture. The air em-brittlement in this later work was attributed to the diffusion of gaseous atoms into the surface layers of the crystal, thereby impeding the movement of dislocations. This model satisfactorily accounts for the reembrittlement observed after further air exposure subsequent to the water dissolution treatment. However, the situation has recently become more complex by the observations in several laboratories4-t that under certain conditions air exposure does not impair the ductility of NaC1. It has also been recognized5 that improper drying operations after water dissolution can leave surface precipitates that lead to embrittlement. Cleavage defects on as-cleaved crystals can often be another source of embrittlement. In the present work the effect of the gaseous atmospheres nitrogen, argon, air, oxygen, and ozone, on the ductility of rock salt was studied extensively. The embrittlement resulting from oxygen and ozone exposures was found to be associated with the formation of a NaC1O3 surface film. It is suggested that certain atmospheres, one of which often can be ambient air, which inhibit the formation or favor the decomposition of this compound, can promote ductility. Thus one aspect of the Joffe effect is certainly related to the removal of surface compounds or complexes by water dissolution. The effect of surface precipitates that remain after drying operations and of cleavage defects were also studied. In neither of the latter cases was the embrittlement as severe as that found with a NaClO3 surface layer. PROCEDURE AND SPECIMEN PREPARATION The nature of the embrittlement produced by the agents mentioned above was studied by means of microscopy, mechanical testing, and X-ray diffraction. Specimens were cleaved from large crystals of optical quality sodium chloride obtained from the Harshaw Chemical Co., and, except for those tested in the as-cleaved condition, were given a 15- to 20-sec immersion in distilled water followed by a rinse in absolute methyl alcohol. The specimens were then blotted on a soft, absorbent paper, and dried by a few seconds exposure to a stream of warm, dry air. Such a procedure was found to give a control surface which was microscopically free of residues. (A few crystals were intentionally painted with a concentrated NaCl solution in order to investigate the effect of surface residues). All specimens were of 0.140 sq in. cross-section. Crystals prepared in the above manner were immediately placed in a gas train where they could be exposed to the desired gases for preselected periods of time. For the oxygen and nitrogen exposures, pure reagent-grade gases were employed. The ozone was provided in the form of an ozone-oxygen mixture (approximately 10 pct ozone) prepared by passing commercial grade oxygen over a strong ultraviolet light source. All gases were dried prior to their introduction into the train. Since argon was found to be completely inert in its behavior (i.e., residue-free specimens that were exposed to argon were not embrittled), it was periodically utilized to check the control specimen surfaces as well as the condition of the gas train used for aging the specimens. After exposure to the gaseous media in question, the crystals to be used for the measurement of the strain to fracture were transferred from the gas train to a protective oil bath (without further exposure to the atmosphere) where the tests were conducted in three-point bending. NeaR the town of Christiansburg, Va., occurs a singular feature in topographical as well as geological structure, which may be said to have an important bearing on a large area to the southwest. The great water-shed ridge, which divides the waters flowing into the St. Lawrence from those flowing into the Atlantic ocean, coming southwestward, forms all of what was the boundary of Maine as agreed upon by the treaty of 1783, and a part of the present boundary, all of the northern New Hampshire boundary, and entering Vermont, continues south of Lake George. Passing irregularly through New York, it enters Pennsylvania, and there bifurcating, sends one prong to the west as a divide between the waters of the lakes and the Ohio, while the other becomes the steady, regular ridge which gave it the name of Alleghany, and thus passes on southwestward through Virginia. At no point has it ever been the geological divide. Its course, commencing in the Archean rocks, has passed through nearly every series of formation, and comes into Virginia in the Carboniferous strata. The geological divide—the line between the fossiliferous and the non-fossiliferous rocks—lies, in Canada, to the west of it, but from New York south into Virginia is far to the east. Reference to Dr. Hitchcock'k map will show this. But at the locality noted these positions are changed; the water-divide becomes the eastern chain, and the geological divide is the western, returning, it may be said, to the positions occupied in the region where they originated. THE potential iron ores of Michigan can be classified from the stand-point of the predominant impurities into siliceous, sulphurous and phos-phorous ores. Research on the flotation of each of these classes of ore was carried out in the following Planner. The flotative properties of the valuable minerals of iron and of the worthless and deleterious ones were first determined under carefully controlled conditions. This information was then applied to synthetic mixtures of these minerals, which simulated the potential ores. Finally, data obtained during the two foregoing stages of the investigation were used in the flotation beneficiation of samples of the potential ores. Hematite is the most important mineral of iron in each of the above classes of iron ores. This paper deals with a study of that mineral in the very nearly, pure state. There are two varieties of the mineral-specular hematite and massive hematite. The latter is the principal variety, but the former is an Impor-tant mineral of iron in some of the potential ores. Because of this condi-tion, flotation research was performed with both varieties. This research consisted essentially of: (1) a survey of the literature on hematite flota-tion, (2) the preparation of pure massive hematite, (3) the preparation of pure specular hematite, (4) the; development of a laboratory procedure and (5) flotation experimentation. For the purpose of this discussion, the results of previous work on the flotative properties of hematite can be summarized as follows: Specular hematite has been readily floated with terpineol and sodium oleate or heptylic acid1. Further, hematite has been likewise floated with a pro-prietary frother and oleic acid or other soluble oils 2. The principle underlying the majority of magnetic intensity variometers is a comparison of the force to be measured with another force of known magnitude. The known force may be (a) of a magnetic nature, such as magnetic fields produced by magnets or coils, or (b) of a mechanical nature, such as (1) the elastic forces of wires, or (2) the force of gravity, such as employed in bifilar magnetometers and magnetic balances. In instruments of such type, usually a magnetic system is employed, free to move about either a horizontal or vertical axis, on some sort of a suspension. If the earth's magnetic field alone were present, such a system would adjust itself into the direction of the field or that of its components. Owing to the simultaneous action of the comparison force, however, the magnetic needle assumes a position that differs from the direction of the magnetic force; for all such instruments, the angle of deflection is given by tan = FIX, where F is the known and X the unknown earth magnetic force component. In other words, the magnetic system merely serves as an "indicator" for the position of balance of the two forces. Considering the matter from this point of view, it is not immediately obvious why the temperature of such a magnetic system should modify the results. In magnetic instruments, we may distinguish two different effects of temperature: (1) a magnetic effect and (2) a mechanical effect. The first is due to the fact that the magnetic moment of a magnet drops with an increase in temperature. This drop is characterized by the temperature coefficient of the magnetic moment (see equation 1). The second effect is due to the change in the torsion of suspension wires with temperature or to the expansion of lever arms of masses acting on magnetic balances.

FOR several years, a mine in Colorado experienced considerable trouble from small fires caused by the blasting of coal. Although a well-known make of permissible powder was used, it was first thought that the powder ignited gas that might be present and that this, in turn, set fire to line brattices or to the coal. Experiments were, therefore, conducted with another make of powder, but the results convinced the superintendent of the mine, Robt. Williams, Jr., that the fires were not caused by the powder but by the high-voltage electric current used for detonating the shots. The mine "makes" gas very freely, giving off from three-fourths to a million cubic feet of methane per 24 hours. The coal is a good grade bituminous of a very free burning quality. Electric shot-firing from the outside after all men and animals were outside had been practiced for a number of years. The shooting circuit was connected with the main power circuit at the mouth of each entry. Shooting circuit switches were mounted in boxes, which were kept locked with the handle of the switch, in open position, showing through the bottom of the box. The door of the box could not be shut and locked when the shooting switch was closed. At the entrance to each room, or working place, a small switch, called the miner's switch, was placed on the shooting line. It was the duty of the miner, when entering his place at the beginning of the shift, to see that this switch was open and that it was kept open until he left the place at the end of the shift to go out of the mine. Grounded return was used for main power lines. The current was 500 volts, direct current, with 100 to 300 amp. The nearest working face was 9600 ft. from the shot-firers' switch outside the mine and the most remote working face was 2 ½ miles. The various working faces were scattered over a wide area between these two points.

IN previous publications1 it was shown that a scalar model of any weighty structure, where the stresses produced are mainly due to gravita-tional forces, will behave similarly to its prototype if the model and proto-type material are the same arid the model is placed in a centrifugal field of force (substituted for the gravitational field) which has been increased in the same proportion as the linear model scale is decreased. This principle is now being applied to a study of the behavior of mine structures in an attempt to determine the laws that control them. The importance of using models as a means of solving mining problems has been discussed previously, yet it may be well to reiterate here that this method of research and type of solution have been productive of far-reaching results in other engineering fields, notably those of hydraulics and aerodynamics. Model research is a comparatively cheap and time-saving method of checking practical experience. Up to the present time the best guide to what will happen underground has been the judgment of the man who has observed most and been longest acquainted with the local conditions. His experimental work underground is limited by the elements of cost, time and danger, while failure is seldom permissible. In a model, as in a test tube, all elements that affect the solution of a problem are under definite control. Each element may be varied independently at will and its effects noted. Experimental work on a small-scale model may there¬fore be performed at a comparatively small expenditure of time and money, instead of on a full scale in the mine, where the cost, time, and danger elements are necessarily great. The experiments described in this paper are to be considered as part of a progress report and a continuation of Technical Paper 425. One object of the research program is to make each experiment point the way for further research on that particular phase of the general problem. The results and conclusions presented here are therefore not to be considered as final, but are to be interpreted as

Single isothermal sections were constructed for the titonium-rich corners of the systems Ti-Fe-O, Ti-Cr-O, and Ti-Ni-0 with a view to locating the shape and disposition of the ternary intermediate-phase fields for the compounds isomorphous with Fe3W3C. IN a previous note,' it was reported that a group of ternary intermediate phases existed which occurred in the general composition range Ti,X,O-Ti&O where X was one of the following elements: copper, nickel, cobalt, iron, or manganese. In two instances, binary intermediate phases occurred (Ti²Cu and Ti²Ni) which appeared to be isomorphous. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the phases could be indexed on a cubic lattice whose cell edge was of the order of 11 kX. Karlsson2 stated that the line extinctions and line intensities indicated that these phases were isomorphous with Fe³W³C and therefore belonged to the space group Oh. This author also noted that no unique phase of this type occurred at the composition Ti,Cr,O. This latter statement was accepted as true at the time the previous technical note was written.' However, work continued along these lines and that reported here has shown that a phase isomorphous with Fe³W³C does exist in the vicinity of the composition Ti³Cr³O but not at or near Ti4 Cr²O. The lattice parameter of this phase was found to be 13.01 kX. Metallographic examination of both as-cast and annealed specimens of these supposed ternary oxide phases disclosed structures which were far from single phase in many instances. It was considered a point of some interest to locate more positively the composition coordinates of the single-phase fields. To this end, single isothermal sections for the systems Ti-Fe-O (1000°C), Ti-Cr-0 (1000°C), and Ti-Ni-0 (900"C) were constructed. Phase relationships were studied by both X-ray diffraction and metallotrra~hic methods. Allovs were prepared as 10 g buttons by melting in a noncon-sumable electrode, water-cooled copper crucible arc-melting furnace using a helium atmosphere. Oxygen was introduced quantitatively by the use of weighed amounts of TiO² or TiO. Iodide titanium and the purest available alloying metals were used. All results are discussed in terms of the nominal composition of the melts. Previous experience with making oxygen-rich alloys had shown that oxygen losses were not significant if a homogeneous melt was produced. Weight-loss measurements were used to check loss in metallics during melting. Anneals were conducted in evacuated Vycor bulbs, and annealing times ranged from 24 hr at 1000 °C to 48 hr at 900°C. To achieve equilibrium in certain sluggish alloys, seven-day anneals were used. Debye-Scherrer powder patterns were taken in a 14 cm diam camera using filtered CuK radiation (K² = 1.541232 kX; K., = 1.53739 kX). Specimens were prepared by crushing and screening previously annealed buttons. In general, the X-ray diffraction results were used to identify the major phases, while the metallographic examinations were more useful in indicating the number of phases present. By the use of the combined results and general fundamental rules governing ternary equilibrium, it was possible to construct isothermal sections in good detail. In some instances where auxiliary lattice-parameter data were available, it was possible to lay down tie lines and to locate more positively corners of three-phase fields. Isothermal Section of the System Ti-Fe-O at 1000°C The binary systems Ti-O³ and Ti-Fe4 have been published. Binary phases, TiO, TiFe, and TiFe2, are likely to be encountered in the titanium-rich corner of the system. The structures are NaCl (Bl), CsCl (B2), and MgZn, (C14) types, respectively. Although preliminary X-ray diffraction studies indicated the presence of a ternary phase in the composition range Ti,Fe,O-TiJ?e,O, metallographic examination of two specimens at these compositions revealed the presence of other phases. THE only investigations on record of the reactions occurring during the Bessemer blow are of charges containing a large percentage of manganese, with the exception of two partial analyses by Snelus and Barker of the. English method, where a low percentage of manganese was used. They do not give the analysis of the spiegel, nor do they report any graphitic carbon after the first stage of the process. Both report only traces of manganese after the first stage until the addition of spiegel. The slags corresponding to the samples of metal were not analyzed.

Fluorspar, the commercial name for fluorite, is a mineral composed of calcium fluoride, CaF,. Its valuable properties are due to its content of fluorine, and it is the principal commercial source of that element. The name is derived from the Latin word "fluere," to flow, because the mineral has a low melting point and is used in metallurgy as a flux. Cryolite is a sodium aluminum fluoride, Na,AlF,. It is a rare mineral which has been found in commercial quantities in only one place in the world, Greenland. Small amounts of it are shipped from stock in that country, and its place in industry has been taken over almost completely by synthetic cryolite. Because of the relative unimportance of cryolite, discussion of it has been relegated to a short section at the end of this chapter, which is principally concerned with fluorspar. History Fluorspar was used for ornamental purposes by the Greeks and Romans, who fashioned such things as vases, drinking cups, and table tops from it. Various peoples including the Chinese and the American Indians carved ornaments and figurines from large crystals. Its usefulness as a flux was known to Agricola (1564), who wrote about it in 1546. Mining began in England about 1775 and at various places in the United States during the period 1820 to 1840. Production became substantial following the development and widespread adoption of the basic open hearth method of making steel, in which fluorspar is used as a flux. After that, production and usage were stimulated by growth in the steel, aluminum, chemical, and ceramic industries and were accelerated by World Wars I and II. Fluorocarbons entered the picture in 193 1 and the use of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (HF) as a catalyst in the manufacture of alkylate for high octane fuel blends began in 1942. The development of the froth flotation process in the late 1920s, a differential flotation scheme for separating fluorspar from galena, sphalerite, and common gangue minerals in the 1930s, and the application of heavy-media concentrating methods to the treatment of low grade ores in the 1940s were outstanding technological contributions that enabled increased production of fluorspar concentrates. In recent years the development of pelletizing and briquetting processes for making flotation concentrates into gravel-size particles for use in steel furnaces and the development of more efficient and selective flotation schemes for treating crude ores containing abundant dolomite and barite have been major improvements in the industry.

THE Ajo copper district is in the heart of the Arizona desert, near the western boundary of Pima county. Gila Bend, the nearest railroad point, is 43 miles north of the camp, and the little Mexican border town of Sonoita is 30 miles south. Between Gila Bend and Sonoita, Ajo is the only settlement save for one or two small cattle ranches and the uncertain villages of nomadic Papago families. The Little Ajo mountains rise a few hundred feet above wide desert valleys, beyond which are lava mesas. The camp itself lies at an elevation of about 1,900 ft. above sea level, in a little basin on the east side of the range, separated from the open desert by low hills. In the center of the basin the brilliantly iron and copper stained rocks of Copper mountain rise 150 ft. above -the village. Many varieties of cactus and low desert bushes cover the hills, while in the large valleys there are clusters of mesquite paloverde, and ironwood trees which furnish limited amounts of fairly good fuel. A scanty supply of water is obtained from wells in the desert and from prospect pits in the camp. The nearest abundant source of water is the Gila river, 50 miles north of Ajo. (See Fig. 1.) HISTORY OF THE AJO DISTRICT The Ajo, next to Santa Rita, New Mexico, is claimed to have been the first copper district in the Southwest worked by Americans. In the '60's or even earlier high-grade native copper and cuprite Ore was mined from shallow surface workings and hauled by bull team 400 miles across the desert to San Diego. From there it was carried in sailing ships to Swansea, Wales. Later, the ore was hauled to Yuma, floated down the Colorado river to the Gulf Of California, and shipped to Swansea. Bat-infested old workings and the massive axles of the bull carts are shown to prove the truth of the stories.

IN 1923, when the writer began his studies in metallurgy, he came upon an article by Professor Honda on the, Equilibrium Diagram of the Iron-carbon System, 1 which made a profound impression on him. What interested him most was this sentence: "In the recent diagram of the iron-carbon system, the solidus is usually shown as a curve bending considerably downward. But it can be shown by thermodynamics that if the liquidus is straight or slightly curved, the same must also be true for the solidus. Hence, in my constitutional diagram, the lower portion of the solidus is slightly bent upward." Ever since then the writer has been interested in thermodynamics, especially chemical thermodynamics. The applications of thermo-dynamics to the metallic systems have been, in the writer's opinion, sadly neglected, although we continually use the phase rule in our study of equilibria in the liquid and solid states of metallic alloys. Many investigators, among whom may be mentioned Heycock and Neville, and s Honda and his coworkers, have applied the simple Raoult-van't Hoff law of depression of freezing point, mainly to determine the heat of fusion, but no attempt has been made to investigate the applicability of the thermo-dynamic laws of solution (as opposed to the laws of solution derived from other sources) to metallic systems" showing either limited or complete solid solutions. Perhaps the reason for this neglect is that until recently there have been so few reliable data on the solidus, which is much more difficult to determine than the liquidus. The writer has under way at the present time an investigation of a number of systems, the solidi of which have been more or less reliably determined. Recently, the writer has not only shown the valid applicability of the thermodynamic laws of solution as applied to the system antimony-bismuth but has also suggested a method of attacking problems involving complete and incomplete equilibria.2 In the present paper, the same method of approach is employed. For convenience, we shall divide this paper into two parts:

Structures produced upon solidification of the eu-tectic composition (33 wt pct Cu) aluminum copper alloy have been examined as a function of freezing rate dfs /d? , the rate of change of fraction solid (fs) with time (8). Slow (dfs/d? = 0.0016 sec-1), intermediate (dfs/d? = 0.02 sec-1) and rapid (dfs/d? = 0.4 to 7.30 sec-1) freezing rates were used. The lamellar Al-Cual2 eutectic is arranged in the form of rod-shaped colonies at rapid freezing rates. The colonies are aligned parallel to the direction of heat flow, whereas the lamellae within the colonies are aligned at various angles, as high as 90 deg, to the direction of heat flow. The colony spacing (C) is proportional to the square root of inverse freezihg rate. The relationship is C = 15.5(dfs/d?)-1/2 where C is in µ and 8 is in sec. The ratio of colony spacing to lamellar spacing is greater than 20.0 and increases with a decrease in the freezing rate. A duplex dendritic structure is produced at intermediate freezing rates. A fine lamellar eutectic is arranged within the dendrites (exhibiting side branches at an angle close to 60 deg from the main stem) and a coarse irregular eutectic appears in the interdendritic regions. The duplex eutectic structure is also produced at slow freezing rates. However, at slow freezing rates there is a Platelat of CuAl2, along the center of the main stem of each dendrite and the other lamellae are arranged perpendicular to the central platelet. THE eutectic between CuA12 and a! aluminum has been reported to freeze in a lamellar form by several workers.'-3 chadwick4 has measured the interlamel-lar spacing as a function of growth rate. Kraft and Albright2 have reported on irregularities in the lamellar structures, and have proposed growth models which account for the formation of faults during solidification. In certain instances the lamellar eutectic has been found to exist in colonies. The colony formation315 has been attributed to the breakdown of a planar liquid-solid interface due to rejection of impurities. The aim of the present work is to study the structures produced from the eutectic aluminum-copper alloy under relatively fast solidification rates, such as encountered in casting and welding operations. The solid-liquid interface presumably remains planar under conditions of slow unidirectional freezing which produce lamellae aligned parallel to the direction of heat flow. The local growth velocities are the same over the entire interface and are equal to the rate of growth of the all-solid region. The spacing between the eutectic lamellae is inversely proportional to the square root of the growth rate of the all-solid region. Under the freezing conditions used in the present study, the solid-liquid interface is cellular or dendritic and the local growth velocities are different in the different regions of the interface. The relationship between the growth rate of the all solid region and the local growth velocities varies with the location and the shape of the interface. The growth rate of the all-solid region is, therefore, an inadequate parameter to describe the eutectic micro-structures which depend upon the local growth velocities. For this reason the structures have been examined as a function of freezing rate, dfs/d?, where fs is the fraction solidified at time 0. The freezing rate was varied by a factor of 4000. The relationship between the freezing rate, dfs/d?, and the growth velocit of the all solid region depends upon the specimen geometry and the shape of the interface. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The A1-33 pct Cu alloy used throughout this study was made in an induction furnace, using electrolytic copper and aluminum of commercial purity (99.7 pct), the primary impurities being silicon (0.12 pct), iron (0.14 pct), and zinc (0.02 pct). Three ranges of freezing rates were investigated: 1) A spectrum of rapid freezing rates (ranging from 0.40 to 7.30 sec-1) was obtained in arc deposits made on 2-in. thick cast plates of the eutectic alloy. The arc was operated at constant power and was made to travel at constant velocity on the surface of the plate that was in contact with the chill surface during solidification. The pool of liquid metal formed under the moving tungsten arc solidified rapidly by heat extraction through the unmelted plate. Conditions of unidirectional heat flow were achieved near the fusion zone interface, especially in the center of the arc deposits. The great advantage of the arc technique is that rapid cooling and freezing rates can be varied in a qualitative way. The correlation between the arc parameters and the solidification rate is given by the following relationship:6-8

Never having done it before, it took us all day and until 11 at night to select and pack for a four-day back- pack trip up Lake Chelan last month. When we were through, we couldn't lift our own pack and Sylvia's, OUT spouse's, we barely managed to budge. Nevertheless, the next morning we were at the dock to board the Laldy of the Lake for the 3 ½ -hr boat trip to Lucerne. Our dress and accouterments creating the appearance of a veritable expedition into the wilderness made a sharp contrast with our fellow passengers, a senior citizens tour group from Spokane. We had come out to Seattle for the SME Fall Meeting and were taking advantage of the occasion for a vacation trip back to Lucerne and Holden where we had lived briefly 25-years ago, and a backpack trip up Railroad Creek from Holden to the Glacier Peak country, weather permitting. No matter what you say, weather is important, and this is one of the ingredients that went into making the SME Fall Meeting and Exhibit in Seattle, September 22-24, a thoroughly delightful experience for the 700 plus persons who attended. Seattle is a beautiful city, but with late September sunshine, which we experienced, it is the best. The second ingredient, is a swinging host committee. Under the leadership of Don Anderson and Tom Van Zandt, co-chairmen, and Mrs. Cecilia Reed, Ladies Program, superb hospitality and fine arrangements were blended. Earl Beistline, from Fairbanks, organized a two-day short course on arctic operations which preceded the meeting and drew an attendance of 44. Dick Robbins, in charge of arrangements, provided Masters-at- arms for technical sessions and a presentation of the colors by the U.S. Coast Guard at the Welcoming Luncheon. Eric Cheney's field trips ranged far and wide with events both before and after the meeting. David (Jeff) Kroft, capably managed audio-visual operations with a group of students from the University of Washington. Charles Hochmuth worked long, hard and effectively before and during the meet- ing on finances. Hank Reed, managed an authentic three-ring circus as Entertainment Chairman. His activities covered two cocktail receptions for all registrants and a dinner-dance. Dolph Campbell and Joe Hackbarth provided publicity by press and TV (see p. 37-40). SME's meetings have certain characteristics and possibly not all of these are known to everyone. The first of these is the deliberate involvement of the AIME Section in the area of the meeting. Most trade shows and conventions are run 100% by a professional staff and although SME staff could also do this, it has been our experience that a more friendly and better meeting results when the local members apply their talents. Actually SME only considers a site for a meeting after it has received an invitation from a Section. The knowledge of local conditions which Section committeemen bring to a meeting is of great value.
