WhEN a collimated beam of protons or other energetic particles is scattered by a single crystal, the emerging particles produce patterns that contain much crystallographic information. Calculations of the trajectories of individual particles can predict with reasonable accuracy the complete pattern (which is related reciprocally to channeling, now studied in detail6) but the task is a lengthy one which has been completed for very few cases. A many-beam dynamic diffraction calculation of the patterns would be even more difficult and in some cases may be invalid. Because of these complexities, simple methods that will predict to a rough approximation the relative intensities of the lines in films of the back-scattering patterns of a given crystal are wanted. I have found a method which, although it is not a valid computation of intensities or of film darkening by either dynamic or kinematic diffraction principles or by trajectory calculations, nevertheless is found to be useful in practice. It has been tested on several crystal types,7 and is here tested on additional ones. The method consists in first calculating the structure factor F(hk1) for the (hkl) plane, of spacing d, by the familiar equation: where the summation extends over the atoms in the unit cell and fj is the atom scattering factor of the jth atom (using tables computed for electron diffraction, preferably those computed without exchange). The future of plant design in mineral processing and extractive metallurgy is discussed in relation to present trends and the future need to build plants that will treat larger tonnages and lower grades of ore. The future equipment and plant design of crushing, grinding, screening, classification, flotation, magnetic concentration, gravity concentration, hydrometallurgy, thickening, filtration, tailings disposal, health, safety, environment, and materials of construction are discussed. Future plants are expected to follow upon present evolutionary trends. The impact of escalation, energy costs, and increased regulation of the industry is foreseen as a major influence on plant design.

Central Texas added 76 producing oil and gas wells during the year, abandoned 378 wells in the same period, and produced 10,359,905 bbl. of oil in the 12 months under consideration. The oil production represents a decline of only 3 per cent as compared to 1934, but it must be remembered that much new production was added during the year. The activity in new work centered in Frio, Bexar, Williamson and Cald-well counties, with development in the Pearsall, Von Ormy and Byersville fields taking first importance. New discoveries in 1935 were confined to Pearsall area of Frio County and an extension to the Darst Creek field in Guadalupe County. The Red Lake field, in eastern Freestone County, proved itself of importance from the standpoint of a gas reserve but no oil production has yet been obtained. In Bexar County, the Von Ormy field, in which the discovery well was drilled early in 1934, completed 22 oil producers during the year. New Fields Pearsal1.—The Amerada Petroleum Corporation, in developing its 60,000-acre block in Frio County, has definitely proved the existence of commercial oil production in four separate horizons; namely, the Navarro, the Austin Chalk, the Buda and the Georgetown. The discovery well, a two million cubic foot gas well, was tompleted in 1934. A test of the Trinity sand at 10,050 ft. found salt water but later was plugged back and finished as an oil well in the Navarro sand. Most recent of their discoveries has been in the Austin Chalk at a depth of 5666 ft., where a 24-hr. gage through 1-in. choke showed 2640 bbl. of pipe line oil. The oil has a gravity of 28.0" A.P.I. and is brownish in color. Because of lack of pipe lines in the area, the wells are produced only for short periods of time, and it is predicted that development will be slow until the district is entered by pipe line purchasing companies. The electro-optic coefficients of LiNbO, and KTao.,5Nboe3,O3 (KTN) have been experimentally determined at the HeNe laser wavelengths of 0.6328, 1.15, and 3.39 µ. The coefficients were calculated fronz the retardation induced by an applied electric field. The retardations were measured by observing one or move transmission maxima and minima as a function of the applied field, and by measuring the retardation directly with a Babinet-Soleil compensator. The values obtained agree quite well with those previo~lsly reported by others. Extinction ratios as high as 3000:l have been observed. Resistivities and Curie temperatures have also been measured. Light-induced optical inhornogeneities in LiNbO, repovted by others have been observed. CONSIDERABLE interest has recently been shown in the electro-optic properties of LiNb03 (Refs. 1 and 2) and KTN.3, 4 These crystals have a number of advantages over such well-known materials as KDP. These advantages include: 1) the infrared transmission of KTN and LiNb03 extends to 5 p whereas that of KDP cuts off at 1.5 p ; 2) driving voltages required for modulators using these materials are considerably lower than those required for KDP. After first discussing some theoretical considerations of the electro-optic effect, we will report the results of measurements of the dc electro-optic coefficients of these materials at wavelengths of 0.6328, 1.15, and 3.39 p. THEORY The generalized equation for the electro-optic effect can be written: Although lattice polarization is the fundamental variable, rather than the applied electric field, we follow the convention of expressing the linear electro-optic effect in terms of the applied field. For LiNbO the quadratic terms are negligible. Since KTN has a center of symmetry the rijk tensor is 0. After applying the usual symmetry considerations and index contractions,* the rijk and gijkl tensors can be expressed as follows: LiNbOaT If field directions are now chosen, the change in refractive index and the angle between the induced optic axes and the crystallographic axes can be found. The induced rotations of the principal axes of the index ellipsoid for fields in principal crystallographic directions are given in Table I. Since KTN is initially isotropic, the principal axes in the zero-field condition are parallel to the crystallographic axes. The induced retardations are given in Table 11. SUCCESS of the dislocation theory in formulating the transitional lattice theory proposed by Har-greaves and Hill in 1929' is well established for low angle grain boundaries. The theoretical work of Burgersa and Read and Shockley,3 together with the experimental observations of Aust and Chalmers4 and Parker and colleagues,6 leaves little doubt as to the structure of grain boundaries with differences of orientations up to between 15" and 20". Beyond these angles, the structure of the boundary is not so clear, and is still a matter for conjecture. There have been notable experiments devised from which the data could be used to calculate energetics for possible arrangements of atoms in forming a large angle boundary.6 Most of these experiments deal with diffusion through and along the grain boundary. The recent work of Rhines and Cochart7 and Rhines, Bond, and Kissel18 was concerned with the relative movement of grains in aluminum bicrystals under constant tensile loads with their boundaries aligned at 45 " to the tension axis. The gliding along the grain boundary was cyclic and began after an incubation period. The velocity of gliding increased with the sum of the angular difference, 8, between the operative slip direction in the conjugate crystals and the angular difference between the active slip planes as measured between their traces upon the grain boundary. The initial gliding rate varied with temperature, and the logarithm of the average gliding taken over a considerable period was a linear function of the reciprocal of the absolute temperature: the slope gave an activation energy of 11,000 ±1,000 cal per mole. Since the rate of grain boundary shear is sensitive to the misorientation of the grains themselves, as shown by several workers,7,8 it is suggested that further work of this type might be fruitful in adding information regarding the behavior of boundaries under stress. The techniques devised by Chalmers" added impetus to the facility for observing grain boundary behavior, in that they provided a simple means for producing bicrystals of predetermined orientation so that the angle of the boundary could be controlled,

INTRODUCTION The decade from 1969 to 1979 saw the crest of a wave of investments by companies and investors, primarily from the major industrial nations, in the metals and minerals industries of the so-called lesser developed countries. This was brought about by two major considerations: 1). The higher ore grades and therefore the higher profit potential of the mineral deposits in the third world countries, and 2). The desire, particularly by the European countries and by Japan, to ensure a safe supply of raw materials not available in their own countries. The decade began with the start of the Toquepala mine in Peru and the major investments in the Bougainville mine in Papua New Guinea and the Ertsberg mine in Indonesia. It ended with the start-up of Southern Peru Copper Company (SPCC) Cuajone mine in Peru and Inco's Soroako mine in Indonesia and the investments in several major alumina or aluminum projects in Australia and Brazil. Concurrent with this huge flow of funds into the mineral resources industry of the developing world was the build-up of a psychological fear in the host countries of exploitation/domination by the foreign investors. This resulted in an increasing trend towards: 1). Nationalization of existing mineral ventures, and 2). Tougher legal/fiscal frameworks for new ones. NATIONALIZATION Nationalization appeared in its earliest form as "Mexicanization" of the petroleum industry in Mexico in the 1930's, followed later by Mexicanization of the mining industry in general. This was enacted with the Mexican Mining Law of 1961 which required that 51% of the equity be owned by Mexican nationals. Later in the decade the equity share for foreign investors was reduced to 33 1/3% for the developers of the Frasch sulphur operations in the Isthumus of Tehuantepec. However, the law was not fully implemented in the copper industry until late 1970 with the purchase of 51% of the ownership in the Cananea Mining Company. The trend toward nationalization of the copper industry progressed to Chile where in 1967 under the Government of Eduardo Frei the major North American copper companies were induced to sell a one-half interest in their Chilean mines to the State. Likewise, in 1970, "Zambianization" took place, when the two major operating companies Roan Selection Trust (Amax) and Zamanglo (Anglo American) were restructured into Roan Consolidated Mines (RCM) and Nchanga Consolidated Mines (NCCM) providing the government with 51% of the equity ownership. Whilst the earlier forms of nationalization in general constituted a fairly priced buy-out (El Teniente, Chile for US$80 million, RCM for US$117.8 million, NCCM for US$178.7 million), the total nationalization of the Chilean mining companies in 1970 under Salvador Allende did not. Later, "Western" countries joined this trend and on October 29, 1973, Mr. Gough Whitlam proclaimed that "overseas capital must continue... in partnership with Australian capital" and "in some special energy cases we have an objective of 100% Australian ownership". In 1974 Mr. Pierre Trudeau stated: "The Liberal Party of Canada sets as an objective that new resources projects in the natural resource field should have at least 50% and preferably 60% Canadian equity ownership". FOREIGN INVESTMENT The situation for the foreign investor in the worldwide resource industry rapidly deteriorated from then on. New features appeared in mineral exploitation and operating agreements, centering not only on local government/local companies ownership but also on increased taxation. The new tax rate (mineral tax, royalty, and income tax) for the semi-government companies NCCM and RCM in Zambia became an effective 73%. Likewise the much publicized and discussed renegotiated Bougainville agreement brought dramatic increases in the total "take" by the PNG Government. By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or cement, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This

The study of the energy used in crushing operations has advanced from a period of perplexing confusion to one of greater clarity. Only within the last few years has any true conception of the work in crushing been possible, owing to the chaotic state of theoretical knowledge. For some 20 years a controversy existed between those advocating the Rittinger law and those advocating the Kick law. The Kick law now appears to be definitely out of the picture, and crushing efficiency may be based confidently on the Rittinger theory. There also seems to be a generally crystallized conception as to the meaning and nature of sub-sieve material. There is needed a simple, direct method for determining surface on a crushed ore product, and also a simple and accepted method for size determination on minus 400-mesh material. The Crushing Law The Rittinger(l)‡ theory of crushing was advanced in 1867 and the Kick(3) theory in 1885. While the Rittinger theory might have been accepted without much question and actually had been accepted by many investigators, a serious doubt as to its validity was raised by Stadler(10) who upon purely theoretical grounds proclaimed the Kick "law" as the true law of crushing. According to Rittinger the energy required in successive steps in reduction increases geometrically, while according to Kick the energy increases arithmetically. These "laws" therefore are at variance, and the establishment of the true law was recognized as of first importance. Many simple experiments have been made to demonstrate the application of the Rittinger theory to crushing, and it would seem that its simplicity should favor its acceptance. Experimental evidence, however, was not convincing, as no reliable data could be obtained on the finer material from a crushing or grinding operation. Gates,(13) Bell,(19)

Historically, major natural gas transmission companies have been faced with the problem of meeting peak demands when the source of natural gas is located hundreds of miles away from the marketing area. Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corp.'s position was further complicated when offshore gas supply wells were shut-in during hurricane alerts. Transco's solution to this problem was the construction of salt storage wells adjacent to their pipeline near Eminence, Miss. Storage caverns were constructed using conventional solution mining methods. Two 13 3/8-in.-diam cased wells were completed and a 1,000,000-bbl cavern was leached at an interval of 5700 to 6700 ft at the base of each well. The two caverns have a usable storage volume of 2.0 billion cu f t and each well has a deliverability rate of 375 million standard cfd. The caverns are unique in that brine is not used for product displacement-all brine has been removed from the caverns. Natural gas is stored at a maximum pressure of 4000 psia. During withdrawal the cavern pressure drops to a minimum of 1225 Asia-the volume of gas between these two pressures becomes "usuable or top gas." The Eminence storage terminal is located on the Eminence salt dome about 30 miles north of Hattiesburg, Miss. Construction began in July 1968 and was completed in October 1970.

Difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for overage mobile mine equipment at the Gay mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians or computer men. The Gay mine is located 17 mi east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Co. and the FMC Corp. with 1.5-2.0 million tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24-cu yd scrapers; twenty-one 30-50-ton end-dump trucks; four 3%-4%- cu yd shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units.

In extension of a suggestion already made to account for certain features observed in the Juneau gold-belt in southeastern Alaska,' it is the object of the present paper to indicate in detail certain conditions in which deformation of rocks under their own weight might lead to the production of fractures in which veins could be deposited. A direct, uniformly-distributed pressure of sufficient intensity, applied to an elastic brittle mass offering strung resistance to deformation, produces rupture. In a material of ideal properties the surfaces of rupture under such pressure would be shearing planes inclined at 45' to the line of force, unless there be preliminary deformation, in which case this angle would be greater than 45. This general conclusion, resting upon analytical mechanics, is completely supported by the results obtained by DaubrBe2 in experiments upon the deformation of wax and resin prisms under compression. Let us then first consider one of Daubree's diagrams. In the case illustrated in Fig. 1, four sets of fractures in two approximately right-angled pairs (that is to say, in conjugate sets) were produced by endwise compression of a square cross-sectioned prism. These fractures cut the axis of compression at approximately equal angles, not varying greatly from 45o. The location of the four sets of fractures is obviously determined by the shape of the prism, since the material in each corner acts in a way as a buttress, permitting the bulging to take place most readily on the sides. INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY BY "thermochemical factors" we refer to those variables which affect the net heat which must be put into the bath in order to make a heat of steel from any given set of charge materials. This is admittedly only one phase of the production rate problem. The whole problem includes also consideration of rate of charging, flame radiation intensity, rate of optimum fuel input obtainable without undue damage to the furnace structure and any variations in conditions such as stirring, slag volume or viscosity which affect the rate at which heat can flow down and away from those exposed surfaces where the heat is first received from the flame. Because a given type of charge in a shop is often considered as being nearly constant in both physical and chemical characteristics from one heat to another, and because such a state of affairs may be thought of as resulting in a reasonably constant net heat requirement, this requirement is usually neglected as an invariable, inevitable matter, about which nothing can be done. With normally variable charge, and variable percentages of limestone and cold pig, however, the net heat requirement can be subject to very appreciable change; it may also be affected by such things as the currently popular procedure of blowing oxygen into the bath, To bring the general problem of production rate into better perspective, therefore, it seems worthwhile to try to evaluate the net bath heat requirement and the amount by which it may change through variation in different factors. Because our calculated values of net heat are admittedly uncertain, we have tried to check them in part by statistical data on actual production rates over rather large groups of commercial heats. The results of calculation of net heat requirements in a wide range of actual commercial practices may first be summarized briefly. We find a wide range between the extremes of different practices, as would be expected, with duplex practice (essentially blown metal plus hot metal) having essentially a zero net heat requirement, an all-cold charge practice somewhat over 1 million Btu per ton of steel and a high hot metal practice about 0.75 million Btu per ton. Over the commercial range of scrap plus hot metal practice, increasing the percentage of hot metal from 40 to 78 pct, with other factors nearly constant, decreased the net heat by only some 5-10 pct, The net heat is increased by about 1.2 pct for each I pct of the metallic charge present as cold pig. Calculated values of oxygen supplied by air varied from about 25 up to 60 lb per ton of steel, and in a 60 pct hot metal practice, an increase from 32 to 52 lb oxygen from air decreased the calculated net heat from 0.88 to 0.74 million Btu per ton. Use of pure cold oxygen to substitute for about one half of the total charge ore (about 28 lb oxygen replacing 145 lb ore per ton of steel) decreased the

The less developed nations maintaining a free enterprise economy (to which this chapter is addressed) have real and substantial opportunities to lay a foundation for general economic progress by using their mineral resources. Most of these nations have mineral resources which could be developed. By seizing these opportunities, nations seeking rapid economic development can secure a source of foreign exchange earnings to finance the imports needed for growth and, at the same time, increase the technical knowledge and well-being of an important part of their population. History clearly shows the manner in which most of the currently industrialized nations have used mineral resources to support their development. Indeed, few nations have managed to achieve a high level of income without a firm base of mineral resource development. The main exceptions appear to be the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, and New Zealand, and the last two have based their prosperity on a highly efficient agriculture. Economic growth in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, and Russia was importantly based on the use of indigenous mineral resources. Despite this record of accomplishment through mineral development, many of the currently less developed nations are not taking advantage of the opportunities available in the mineral field. Restrictive laws or practices in many such nations operate effectively to prevent development of mineral resources. This failure to grasp real opportunities for development is based on a series of arguments that the mineral field offers few substantial and attainable advantages. Among these, the following propositions appear the most important:

One of the main functions of the United States Bureau of Mines is to obtain and disseminate information that will promote safety in and around mines, and the health and safety of employees engaged in mining. Serious health and safety conditions arising out of contamination of air in metal mines by dust, fumes from explosives and fires, and absorption of oxygen by timber and other causes, led the Bureau of Mines to cooperate with the United States Public Health Service in the study of dust occurrence and ventilation in metal mines in various parts of the country. A. J. Lanza, of the U. S. Public Health Service, and Edwin Higgins, mining engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in 1915, made a detailed study in the mines around Joplin, Mo.; their reports1 are now available. In 1916, 1917, and 1918, a similar study was made in the Butte, Mont., region by Doctor Lanza and D. Harrington, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines; the reports of this investigation will be available soon. In 1919, the study was continued in some of the Arizona mines by D. Harrington, of the Bureau of Mines, and G. E. McElroy and R. A. Koronski, of the U. S. Public Health Service, the underground work being completed in June, 1920; these reports are now being prepared for publication. In the spring of 1920, the scope of the work was extended, with D. Harrington in charge as supervising mining engineer, and short studies were made in the mines of the Coeur d' Alenes in Idaho and around Oatman, Ariz. It is hoped soon to extend the work into mines of California, Nevada, Colorado, Michigan, and Minnesota, and ultimately to other states should the mining companies be willing to coöperate. The price records of seven representative mineral commodities for the 68-year period 1890 through 1957 have been compiled and analyzed for significant trends. When these records are reduced to real prices in terms of dollars of constant purchasing power or to the purchasing power of industrial wages at average rates, a substantial overall fall in prices is revealed. This downtrend contradicts the widely held concept that heavy drafts on a mineral resource must lead to scarcity, reflected in rising prices. Three metals (aluminum, copper, and pig iron), two fuels (bituminous coal and petroleum), and two nonmetals (sulfur and cement) have been chosen because of their pre-eminence in their respective categories, their significance in an industrial economy, and the ready availability of their price records. It might be added that these seven commodities were selected before any price figures were compiled; none was selected or rejected to substantiate any preconceived notions as to price trends. The overall importance of the seven is demonstrated by the fact that, taken together, they composed over three-fourths of the value of all minerals produced in the U. S. in 1957. The first step in the analysis was to reduce the price records to a basis for significant comparisons. Two such comparisons have been made: 1) The quantities of each of the commodities that could have been purchased for an average hour's wage in each year, and 2) the unit price of each commodity through the years in terms of deflated dollars. These data are set forth in the accompanying table and two charts. The quantities of the mineral commodity purchasable with the average wage for one hour's work in all manufacturing industries through 1926 were based on annual average prices and on average annual wage rates determined by Paul H. Douglas and published in his "Real Wages in the United States, 1890-1926." The series was extended through 1957 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U. S. Department of Labor. Calculations based on these data show that the average worker could have purchased 1.28 lb of copper with his hourly wage in 1890, whereas his hourly wage would have purchased 8.11 lb in 1957, an increase of 633 pct in the 68-year period. An average hour's wage would have bought 10.85 gal of petroleum in 1890, compared with 33.04 gal in 1957. Even more spectacular is the increase in sulfur, of which 25.25 lb could have been purchased with the 1904 average hourly wage; 223.08 lb were purchasable with the wage in 1957—an increase of 883 pct. Comparable price data for sulfur are not available for years earlier than 1904. For every commodity, the calculations show an improvement in the wage earner's purchasing power in 1957 compared with the early years. Measuring purchasing power in terms of wages does not give an entirely fair picture of the availability of a commodity in an economy. When the efficiency of an economy changes and the balance shifts among such elements as raw-material production, manufacturing, and service trade, the economic significance of an hour's work changes. Partly to meet such criticism, but mostly to present another interesting measure of the response of minerals to changing market conditions, a second set of calculations has been made to deflate unit prices for the seven commodities into terms of 1954 dollars. To accomplish this adjustment to a common 1954 parity, the Gross National Product Price Deflator, developed by the Office of Business Economics, U. S. Department of Commerce, was used. Although the results of these calculations are not as striking as those based on labor's increasing purchasing power, nevertheless the declines outweigh the rises in the prices of the mineral commodities. In terms of these deflated prices, aluminum and sulfur are much cheaper today than in the early years; copper was substantially cheaper in 1957 than in 1890; pig iron and petroleum are little changed; and only bituminous coal and cement have increased substantially. Strangely, the two mineral commodities with the strongest reserve positions are the two to exhibit rising real prices. Now this apparent overall downtrend in prices has taken place during a period of almost fantastic increase in the demand for mineral products. The value of minerals consumed in the world during the period greatly exceeds all mineral consumption up to 1890. A stage has been reached in the U.S. in which 95 pct of the energy used is of mineral origin and in which machines, structures, roadways, communication facilities, and most other elements in the industrial economy are primarily of mineral origin. Even agricultural fertility is maintained, in large measure, by mineral fertilizers. A series published in Minerals Yearbook shows that the value of U. S. mineral products has risen from $615 million in 1890 to $18,000 million in 1957, a 29-fold increase. Even in deflated dollars, the increase has been eightfold, while population has expanded less than threefold. Not only are demands of the industrial nations— the U. S., countries of Western Europe, and Japan— increasing at rapid rates, but those countries with agrarian economies are calling themselves underdeveloped and clamoring to industrialize. The ever-expanding mineral requirements in the U. S. and throughout the world show no abatement. Mineral reserves frequently have been described as wasting assets. Much concern has been shown for future users, who have been pictured as finding themselves on a plundered planet. Conservationists have viewed the future with alarm and have demanded legislation and regulations to reduce the drain on mineral reserves.

Dispersion-containing titanium-copper alloys were prepared having mean free paths varying from 1.0 to 9.7 P. Tensile studies at room temperature and at 1000°F showed that little or no strengthening occurred when the mean free path exceeded 3 p. The future of lead and zinc, as with any material, will relate directly to their capability to remain competitive; that is, to demonstrate cost-performance ratios that are superior to those of competing materials. These cost-performance ratios are not static; therefore, it is necessary to develop improvements in products or processes to maintain present markets or to penetrate other markets. Perhaps the surest way to achieve these goals, if they can be achieved at all, is through research. The world lead and zinc producing industry established ILZRO as its cooperative research function to carry on both fundamental and applied research and development efforts aimed at the stated objectives. Current research efforts in the fields of die casting, galvanizing, finishing, chemicals, architectural applications, ceramics, and batteries are reviewed and potential impact assessed, some projections are given of possible new areas of research. Environmental research and its impact on future uses of lead and zinc are also discussed.

AS predicted by Messrs. Fuqua and Thompson, in last year's paper on West Texas1, 1935 saw a marked increase in activity in this area over recent years. Both major and independent operators shared in the increased wildcatting operations, which resulted in the discovery of eight and probably nine new fields in this area. During 1935 there were 700 wells completed as compared with 468 in 1934 and only 236 in 1933. Of these completions 579 were producers with a total 24-hr. potential of over 700,000 bbl. It is estimated that the new fields discovered during 1935 added from 200,000,000 to 400,000,000 bbl. to the known oil reserve in West Texas. In addition to these new fields, many of the older producing areas scored marked extensions during the year. New Fields Goldsmith.—-The Goldsmith field, in west central Ector County, gives promise of being the year's outstanding discovery in this area. The discovery well was completed by the Gulf Production Co. in June at a depth of 4177 ft.; it gaged 275 bbl. of 36° gravity oil in 3 hr. through 85/8-in. casing on its first production test. The field has been extended to the east by wells drilled by Phillips and Pure on their Cowden block. Present indications are that the field may contain 10,000 productive acres, and this, together with the large flush production from only a small penetration into the pay, leads to the belief that Gulf-Goldsmith No. 1 was the outstanding Permian lime discovery of 1935. It is quite probable that production will prove to be continuous to the Landreth-Scarborough No. 1, 33/4 miles to the northwest, which was completed for a small producer late in 1934. Sand Hills (Ordovician).—From the standpoint of creating excitement, the outstanding West Texas test of the year was no doubt Gulf-Waddell No. 1, on the northwest nose of the Sand Hills structure. This test was started late in 1934 as a deep test to the Ordovician. Thc Ordovician was topped above 6000 ft,., considerably higher than expected.
