EXPERIMENTAL results of the last decade have shown that both accelerator particles and reactor radiations produce significant changes in the properties of metals. These changes, called radiation damage, are important from both academic and engineering viewpoints. An understanding of the radiation damage produced by reactor radiations is difficult, because many kinds of particles having varying energies are present. Therefore, many fundamental studies are being conducted using accelerators in order to obtain nearly mono-energetic beams of various charged particles. Furthermore, many of these experiments are conducted at low temperatures in order to freeze in the radiation-produced lattice defects, after which the specimens are annealed to study the movement of the defects. It is found that although much of the low temperature radiation damage disappears by annealing at room temperature, a significant amount remains. Because there is no assurance that irradiation followed by annealing at a higher temperature will produce the same effect as irradiation at the higher temperature, and because there is an immediate interest in reactor radiation effects during exposures at and above room temperature, a major program is in progress at this laboratory to investigate some of these effects. This paper, representing a part of the program, compares the radiation damage to a group of metals which were exposed under nearly identical irradiation conditions. The metals, representing the three major crystal systems, include copper, nickel, titanium, zirconium, iron, molybdenum, and type 347 stainless steel. The effects of reactor radiations have been treated from a theoretical viewpoint by Seitz' and Ozeroff.' The problem considered by them has been the atomic displacements produced in an infinite medium by mono-energetic beams of both neutrons and charged particles. For reactor experiments, this treatment is not wide enough in scope, because specimens and reactor components are finite, and there are continuous energy spectra of the various particles. Therefore, the theoretical considerations will be extended in this paper to cover reactor conditions and the findings will be compared with the observed radiation damage. Experimental Materials—The six basic metals for this investigation were of commercial or higher purity, and the type 347 stainless steel was of commercial quality. These materials were supplied in various forms ranging from ingots to finished rods, and were fabricated to rods approximately % in. in diam and annealed for specimen stock. The following table shows the shipments from the four Lake Superior iron-ore districts during the year 1887, and their total outputs from their beginning until the close of 1887.* It will be noted that the Menominee district is second in importance in its total output tonnage to the close of the year 1887. These ore deposits are found in jasper-slates and in the horizon between these and their associated clay-slates; in the latter they are true contact-deposits. They are found in this jasper- and clay-slate formation under varied conditions, yet, in all, certain characteristic laws are preserved. The angle of dip varies from 15° to 20°, and up to 85° and even 90°, with the horizon. The ore is rather soft, bluish-black in color, and is a hematite. It varies in thickness from a few inches to one hundred feet, or more. It is mainly "Bessemer" ore, containing 57 to 63 per cent, of metallic iron, and .03 to .07 per cent, of phosphorus. In the mining nomenclature of this range two conditions of the ore-lens are described by the terms "dip" and "pitch." The former is in common use in defining the relation of the ore-plane to the horizon ; the latter indicates the posture of the ore-body as it inclines east or west from its position at the opening of the mine. To those who are unfamiliar with the nomenclature in common use among operators in the Mid-Continent, the Permian Basin is a term to cover several widely separated productive areas. It includes what is designated in trade journals as the Panhandle fields, the West Texas fields and Southeastern New Mexico fields. It is bounded roughly on the east by the 100th parallel, on the west by the 104th parallel, 011 thr south by the Rio Grande River and various mountain ranges and on the north by the north line of the Texas Panhandle. The name is derived from the location of these three widely scattered areas which are all in a broad geosyncline which is chiefly filled with sediments of Perrliian age. The oil fields as now known and the approximate limits of the Permian Basin are shown in Fig. 1. The major part of the production in these areas comes from liniestonc or dolomite of Permian age. Some granite wash and sandstone production has been developed but ordinarily does not yield as large initial production as the limestone or dolorliite. Introduction During 1926, Texas, exclusive of the Gulf Coast, produced 12G1SS-1,-952 bbl. of oil,' of which 40,727,877 bbl., or 32 per cent., was produccd in the West Texas Permian Basin. During 1927 the same area in Texas produced 167,176,000 bbl. %f oil, of which 89,779,000 bbL13 or 52 per cent., was produced in the West Texas Permian Basin. The increase in the total production of Texas is about equivalent to the increase in production in the Permian Basin. Since production in the Panliandle District declined during the entire year, the increase of production in the West Texas Permian Basin, and also the increase in Texas, is due to the enormous increase from the West Texas fields. During colonial times, Brazil was famous for the richness of her alluvial gold deposits. Paul Ferrand has estimated that the gold produced during the period from 1700 to 1820 was the equivalent of some 64 million pounds sterling. Since that time, most of the more prolific alluvial deposits have been exhausted. A few gold mines are still functioning, notably the Morro Velho mine, which is one of the deepest mines in the world. Today, the gold production of Brazil is insignificant when compared with world figures, but there are still many gold-bearing regions and it is probable that in at least some of them profitable returns would result from an exploitation program taking advantage of all the most modern innovations in gold mining and ore treatment on a large scale. In order to demonstrate the value of some of these abandoned prospects and stir up interest in increasing the national gold production, the government has stimulated research. Experimental plants have been and are being established in various places, and tests on large quantities of ores are being carried out on a semicommercial basis. The Geological Survey of the State of Minas Geraes is very active in this line and the Federal Institution is also showing an increased interest in the matter. One of the lesser known gold-bearing regions of Brazil is in the vicinity of Lavras, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Gold was first reported from this region in the early part of the nineteenth century. In 1811, D. João VI sent an experienced prospector from Minas Geraes to investigate the validity of the reports. According to the reports of Baron Eschwege, he succeeded in extracting some 30,000 Oitavos (about 105 kg.) during the first few years, but the production costs exceeded the value of the gold obtained.

THE history of the production of sulfur from salt domes in Louisiana and Texas originated with the operations of the Union Sulphur Co. at Sulphur, La., followed by the Freeport Sulphur Co. at Bryanmound, Tex. Including the present development of Grande Ecaille by the Free-port Sulphur Co., which constitutes the tenth dome to be equipped for the production of sulfur in the Gulf Coast, less than 10 per cent of all the known domes have proved to contain sulfur in commercial quantities. The Grande Ecaille salt dome is in the tidal marsh of the Mississippi River delta in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. It is 10 miles southwest of the right descending bank of the river approximately 45 miles below the city of New Orleans and is within 4 miles of the shore line of the Gulf of Mexico.

MORE than 20 years have passed since the publication of Lindgren and Ransome's report on the Cripple Creek District,1 which was made when the district was much more active and prosperous than in recent years. They concluded that the output of the district, which had reached its maximum of about $18,200,000 in 1900, would gradually decline, and their conclusion has been confirmed by records of subsequent production. Between 1905 and 1915 annual declines were partly compensated by encouraging increases, especially in 1908, 1914, and 1915; but a rapid continuous decline followed, due largely to the war and its after effects, until in 1922 the value of output was only slightly more than $4,000,000. It rose to nearly $5,000,000 in 1924, but declined again in 1925 and in 1926, when it was about $4,400,000, and represented ores mainly from deep levels in the Cresson and Portland mines. The profitable operations of these two mines were the principal factors leading to a study of ore at deep levels in the district by the U. S. Geological Survey in coopera-tion with the Colorado Metal Mining Fund. The principal reasons for Lindgren and Ransome's conclusion were three: (1) the greater cost and difficulty of deep exploration; (2) the decrease in the number of veins with increasing depth, and (3) the probability that the telluride ore, believed to have formed at comparatively low temperature, would not persist indefinitely -in depth. Operations since they made these statements have verified the first two, but call for some modification of the third. Rich telluride, ore is being mined at a profit in the Portland mine 3000 ft. below the present surface, or 5000 ft. below the original surface of the Cripple Creek volcano, as interpreted by Lindgren and Ransome. The question arises, therefore, as to the number and extent of such deep deposits, and the answer, so far as it can now be given, must be based mainly on structural data, supplemented by data on the processes of ore deposition. The first successful bucket-elevator dredge to operate in California was put in comnlisvion wt Oroville in March, 1898. There had been numerous previous attempts at dredging, but noue of the earlier boats proved a success. The gold-miners in California earl3 conceived the idea of a machine to dig gravel from the beds and bars of auriferous streams that were inaccessible by the methods then employed, and it was only a few months after the discovery of gold in California that such a machine was Shipped around Cape Horn from New York to San Francisco. Thij was, however, but the forerunner of many failures in gold-dredging, and was soon at the bottoni of the Sacramento river. During succeeding years many other unsuccessful attempts mere made, and it was not until 1897 that a dredge of the single-lift bucket-elevator type mas floated on the Yuba river. This dredge was built by the Risdon Iron Works for 12. H. Postlethwaite, and would probably have been a success if it had been operated on some of the rich Ororille ground

The practice of the cyanide-process of gold-extraction has brought to light many important contradictions of familiar chemical analogies, which still obscure both the theory and the practice of the art with distinctions subtler and more difficult to make or follow than those which delighted the heart of the old-time metaphysician. Yet Nature herself has drawn these distinctions; and if we hope to succeed in this modern search for the Golden Fleece, we must be able to follow her through the winding labyrinth. There are so many phases of this question that I shall attempt to touch on only one of them at this time, but it is one that lies at the root of many others. In reviewing my paper on " The Solution and Precipitation of Cyanide of Gold,"* Mr. E. B. Wilson contends† that" in the solution of gold by means of alkaline cyanides the various reactions are determined, as to their order and intensity, by the relative position of the elements concerned in the electro-chemical series, or series of voltaic tension." In a modified form this statement is probably true. That is to say, the difference of electrical potential in any closed electrical circuit determines the nature of the reactions which ensue. But the matter is not so simple as Mr. Wilson assumes. Recent investigations show that the order of the metals in the electro-chemical series depends not only on the nature of the elements themselves, but also on the chemical composition of the solution in which they are placed; its degree of concentration; its temperature; and, in the case of gases, on the pressure. THE Birmingham red iron ore district in Jefferson County, north central Alabama, Fig. 1, is bounded on the northwest by the Warrior and Plateau coal fields and on the southeast by the Cahaba and Coosa coal fields. The area of study includes the ridge and valley between Red Mountain and Shades Mountain, Fig. 2, approximately 70 square miles extending from Homewood in the northeast to Greenwood in the southwest. The district is one of the most important producers of hematite in the United States, with an annual production of about 7 million tons. The amount of hematite mined between 1870 and 1950 ranged from 6 to 16 pct of the nation's total annual production, and the iron and steel products from blast furnaces in the Birmingham district supply the entire southeastern section of the country.

This paper discusses the materials handling problems encountered in cement plants in the areas of raw and finished product grinding and cement storage. It illustrates by examples taken from actual installations, how optimum feed rate is maintained in grinding circuits with properly applied bin dischargers (vibrating hoppers, Mexican feed boxes and aerated bin bottoms) for materials with high moisture content and/or difficult handling characteristics. Initial operating problems with the equipment will be discussed and maintenance requirements will be indicated for comparison purposes. In a modern cement plant, properly functioning bins and feeders are as essential as process control, for no process control system, however sophisticated, can perform efficiently if raw materials do not flow into the plant processing facilities at the required time and rate. Most materials used in the manufacture of portland cement - such as silica sand, iron ore fines, crushed limestone, gypsum, clinker or cement itself-have difficult handling characteristics under specific conditions. High moisture content or even dampness due to condensation may create bin hang-ups, arching and ratholing, all of which result in improper functioning of the feeders or proportioning equipment. The occurrence of these problems in existing cement plants spurred a search for the corrective devices discussed in this article. The equipment investigated included bin dischargers in the form of vibrating hoppers for moist raw materials, Mexican feed boxes for clinker and aerated bin bottoms for cement. Operating experience with different types of bin dischargers showed that the actual performance of some did not come up to the expected level under prevailing operating conditions. The aim of this paper is to record the results of this experience and there- by aid designers and/or operators in selecting the most suitable equipment for their requirements. BIN DISCHARGERS (GENERAL) A discharger is a device that causes stored solids to flow out of a hopper without metering the rate of flow as a feeder does. The investigation discussed here encompasses the following types of bin dischargers used in a cement plant: (1) vibrating hoppers (horizontal motion), (2) whirlpool hoppers (horizontal and vertical motion), (3) aerated bin bottoms (air fluidization), and (4) Mexican feed boxes. Most of the bins used in the cement industry are of the plug flow type. Raw materials with difficult handling characteristics such as high moisture content may cause flow problems when fed through small openings (12 x 18 in.), even if two walls of the bin are vertical.' The most appropriate solution to these flow problems would be the installation of separate mass flow bins for the different materials such as silica sand, iron ore fines, crushed limestone and gypsum, with each bin correctly designed from test data obtained by measuring the flow properties of representative samples. However, limited storage capacity and plant space usually preclude this approach. Quantitative design of bins for flow based on measured flow properties of representative samples of the bulk solid to be handled is no longer an "engineering art," thanks to the basic research done on the flow of bulk solids in bins during the last decade.2, Where space limitations exist, however, or where improvements are being sought for equipment already installed, bin dischargers offer a satisfactory solution to flow problems. They can be applied effectively under flat-bottom bins or mounted to existing plug-flow bins with very little modification to these facilities. In both the foregoing cases, plug flow will be maintained, but the flow channel will be considerably increased so that it is larger than the discharger's bin-side diameter, and material flow can be sustained if the discharger is correctly selected. The main purpose of a bin discharger is to draw the bulk solids across the whole area of the bin outlet, to make the opening fully effective. THE object of development work in the field of gasification is to find a process by which all' fuels, regardless of their individual properties, can be gasified economically. This paper describes the development of the Winkler process. The economy of the gasification process depends not only on the degree of the gasification effect but also, to a decisive extent, on the costs of fuel, production, and installations. Fig 1 shows the relation between fuel costs and gasification efficiency for various types of fuels. Since the fuel cost in the gasification of coke amounts to two thirds of the price of gas, and the thermal unit in brown coal costs only one third of what it costs in coke, it is easily seen how profitably cheap fuels can be gasified, especially if these fuels require minimum preparation and gasification is done in the vicinity of the mines. These possibilities were a great advantage of the Winkler generators, which were installed 20 years ago in the central German brown-coal fields and, at that time, were without rival for the gasification of finely divided fuels. In the Winkler generator (Fig 2), crushed and ground solid fuels were, for the first time, successfully gasified with oxygen and steam on an industrial scale. Unlike the usual processes formerly employed on an industrial scale, this gasification, which proceeds continuously in the glowing, seething fuel bed, makes only extremely low demands on the fuel. The fuel no longer has to be in lumps and abrasion-resistant, but must be capable of reaction and must be fed into the generator in a grain size of 0 to 8 mm. Brown coal or bituminous coal, or their low-temperature cokes, can be gasified in the Winkler generator. Large plants using fuels are operating on an industrial scale in Europe and in Japan. Table 1 shows the results obtained by gasifying these, fuels in Winkler generators. The thermal efficiency of gasification, which is the relation between the calorific value obtained in the gas produced and that of the fuel consumed, gives no indication of the quantity of steam generated in gasification. The generation of steam in the waste-heat boiler of the Winkler generator adequately-covers the steam consumed in gasification. Applications of rock mechanics to the design of engineering structures in rock involve the assumption that the stresses are due entirely to the present applied loads. For instance, it is assumed that the vertical normal stress in undisturbed rock free of topographic effects is equal to the weight per unit area of the overburden. In fact, vertical dilatational strains associated with stresses of more than 100 times the present overburden pressure have been measured by strain-relief methods on outcrops. 1,2 The notion of residual strain (stress) or latent stress3 seems unassailable; and indeed this has long been recognized by metallurgists. It is difficult, however, to assess the residual component of the in-situ state of elastic strain with conventional strain relief methods employed in mines or down boreholes. That is, in principle, the in-situ state results from the superposition of present applied loads (natural or man- induced) and potentially recoverable elastic strains (stresses) that exist in a given volume of material even though there are no external forces across the boundaries of the body (Voight,4 and Fig, 1). Accordingly, only in unloaded blocks can the true residual strains be measured by strain relief methods. Using X-rays, the elastic strains locked within the quartz grains or crystals of a rock can be measured. These strains are known to persist even when the rock is reduced to small chips but to vanish when the rock is disaggregated and the grains are powdered. Although we have just begun to investigate the mechanisms by which the strains are stored (see Preliminary Results), we believe that "pressure solution'' at grain boundaries, secondary cementation under load, permanent ("plastic") deformation, and temperature changes are possible processes. MANY existing ore deposits of valuable metals have been worked out in their upper surface levels and the continued productivity of these mines is dependent on their extension to greater depths in the earth. The maximum depths at present reached are about 6000 to 8000 ft. below the surface, with no evidence of an impoverished ore vein. These mines are widely distributed; some of the best known are in South Africa, Brazil, India and in the western sections of the United States. Among the factors which increase the difficulty of working these mines at increasing depths are hoisting, rock pressure and temperature. The manner and effectiveness with which these problems arc met will, no doubt, determine in a large measure the ultimate depths to which any mine can be profitably worked. The most critical of these three factors at present is the increase in temperature with depth. The high temperature and humidity in many of these mines at present are severely detrimental to the health of the workers and greatly hamper their efficiency. Some have almost reached a condition in which the human system cannot survive. The problems involved in the cooling and ventilation of mines have all been ably analyzed and presented in previous articles. For this reason, only a résumé of conditions affecting the cooling and conditioning of deep and hot mines will be given in this paper before attention is directed to possible methods of improving atmospheric conditions in the working levels. Physiological Effects of Temperature, Humidity and Air Motion Many data on the physiological effects of different atmospheric conditions on the human system have been compiled and published through the combined efforts of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, the U. S. Bureau of Mines and U. S. Public Health Service. These data were not primarily developed around the conditions existing in deep mines, but the upper temperature limits of the investigations extend into, and are applicable to, mine atmospheric conditions. INTRODUCTION Fifteen years ago a distinguished electrochemist referred to electrochemistry as an "underdeveloped science " In the article in question, Professor Bockris (1) stated that many areas of.natura1 phenomena and applied technology are not perceived as being electrochemically based At that time, this was especially true for much of non-ferrous extractive metallurgy and was a particularly accurate description of hydrometallurgy During the last decade, there has been considerable advancement in applying the theory of electrochemistry to our know1 edge of hydrometallurgical processes and in understanding the mechanisms of underlying electrode reactions. Impressive as these advances are, there is still a growing need for electrochemical research of mineral systems and electrochemical engineering to apply this work in practical situations In a broad sense electrochemistry is defined as the physical chemistry of ions in solution and of phenomena which occur at the electrified interface. Bockris and Reddy (2) refer to electrochemistry as being divided into two fundamental domains, ionics and electrodics ionics is restricted to the behavior of ions in solutions, examples being many familiar redox processes Electrodics represents the main part of electrochemistry, and is the study of charged interfaces and the conditions governing charge transfer reactions across them. Kansas produced 41,966,773 bbl. of oil in the year 1927, thereby taking fourth place among the oil-producing states of the Union. The daily average production decreased from 121,609 bbl. in January to 110,244 bbl. in December. Due to excessive flush production and the resulting decline in the price of crude during the year, operations, both in proved and outlying districts, were reduced materially from those of 1926. There were 2338 completions in 1926, but only a total of 1333 in 1927. Regardless of this decrease in the total number of completions, Kansas made a slight gain in total production for the year, producing 620,262 bbl. more than in 1926. This is accounted for, in part, by the comparative long life of the settled production from the Bartlesville sand areas to the east of the Nemaha granite ridge, and by prolific production in eastern Summer County from horizons new in their importance in the state, productive here at two localities along the axis of the granite ridge (Table 1 and Figs. 1, 2 and 3.) For convenience in further consideration, the state is divided into Eastern and "Western" Kansas. Special emphasis will be placed on those areas in the state of which but little is generally known, and which have not been given detailed consideration in previous publications.

A model Of heat flow in an underground combustion process is studied. This model includes convection effects and thus is more general than previous studies which considered conduction as the only mechanistn for heat transfer. Both linear (tube run) and radial (field application) geometries are considered. The effects of ignition heaters, vertical losses and finite source width are considered for the linear case. The results are in the form of equations and are presented in graphical form for a number of cases. Convection effects increase frontal temperatures about 25 per cent over those computed for conductive transfer for typical field operating conditions. This increase in temperature is a result of heat being transported toward the front by the injection gas. Even greater temperature increases are realized as the per cent oxygen in the injection gas decreases. It is well known that compression costs are of considerable importance in estimating the economic feasibility of underground combustion. By assuming an ignition temperature for the combustion fuel, predictions of limiting conditions on fuel density and injection rate necessary to sustain the combustion zone are made. For typical field conditions, at least 0.75 lb/cu ft of fuel are needed with air as the injection gas. If the injection gas is 10 per cent oxygen and 90 per cent nitrogen, this figure is 0.69 lb/cu ft. INTRODUCTION The possibility of increasing oil recovery by underground combustion has been considered for many years. Recent field tests indicate that the underground combustion process is technically feasible. The economic feasibility depends to a large extent on the amount of air which must be injected to sustain combustion. Prediction of the success of employing underground combustion in a particular reservoir must be based on existing field tests, laboratory tube runs"' and solutions of mathematical or analog models. Vogel and Krueger5 devised an electrical analog of the heat transfer problem in an underground combus-ion process. They considered the problem of heat conduction from a cylindrical source with increasing radius assuming no vertical losses. Bailey and Larkin and Ramey solved the corresponding problem including vertical losses by considering a mathematical model of the conduction process. Ref. 9, 10 and 11 also present information related to the subject study. The present paper generalizes these results to include both conduction and convection mechanisms for heat flow. A model of the conduction-convection process is described. The partial differential equations governing this model are written and solved for a number of cases of interest. The formulas are evaluated and the results are presented graphically. A CONDUCTION-CONVECTION MODEL Description of the Model A number of models are employed in this paper, each of which approximate a particular physical situation depending on the geometry, i.e., linear or radial flow, the type of vertical heat losses, the nature of the source, etc. The geometry for both the linear and radial case is shown in Fig. 1. A particular linear model is described in this section, and variations from this model are described in later sections of the paper. Consider a homogeneous, semi-infinite porous prism with lateral sides insulated as shown in Fig. 1. The left end, x = 0, is heated for a time t, with a plane heater supplying a constant heat flux and during this time; gas (nitrogen) is passed through the pores of the prism at a constant mass flux. At time t, the heater is turned off and air is injected in place of the nitrogen. This causes combustion to take place, and a uniform source of width 1 is formed which moves at a constant velocity v, to the right. Chemistry of the evolution of materials in contact with copper converter tuyeres is delineated by means of analyses of periodic punch rod samples taken during a converter cycle. Lining samples from known peripheral and end locations from three converters were investigated chemically and petrographically. One set of eight specimens representative of all lining parts was removed for study before completion of the campaign. Purely surface removal by slag action is minor. Slag filling of interconnecting cracks extending to the hot face results in a "stoping'' action which shapes the hot face contour and is a significant factor. Major wear mechanism is believed to be copper metal slabbbing caused by metal first penetrating joins and invading fractures or impregnating brick structure laterally from the joints. Importance of lining design and joint fit are emphasized. New laboratory tests are indicated. In the copper converter, molten matte, which is essentially a solution of iron and copper sulfides, is blown with air to produce blister copper. During the first stage of the process the FeS component is oxidized to SOz and FeO, the latter combining with a siliceous flux to form a predominantly ferrous silicate slag. Successive increments of matte and flux are charged, blown, and skimmed of slag until sufficient CuzS ("white metal") has accumulated. This white metal is then blown to copper metal in the final or blister-forming stage by the oxidation of sulfur to SOz and the reduction of combined copper to metal. The reactions of both stages are exothermic so provide the required heat. Temperature is controlled by cold scrap copper, flue dusts, smelter reverts, and so forth. Considerable vari- ation in practices occur depending on the type of converter, grades of the matte and flu, and other factors. Lathe and Hodnett's' survey of world converter practices gives much information on these variations and their effects on the refractories. Principles of converting chemistry are presented by Newton and wilson,' Ruddle,' and schuhmann. Most copper converting occurs within the temperature range 2100" to 2370°F although individual smelters report1 ranges from as low as 1700" to 2240°F to a high of 2200" to 2400°F. Temperature intervals reported from beginning to end of blow varied from 45" to 540°F. Average temperature range was 2030" to 2260°F and the average interval 250°F During the matte-blowing stage varying amounts of magnetite (FeO.Fe,O,) are formed in the slag as suspended crystals and also the liquid portion of the slag will contain, in addition to ferrous silicate, some Fe20s which adds to the potential magnetite formation if the temperature falls. This is a component of the so-called "dissolved magnetite" often referred to in the literature. Although the slag may contain minor amounts of CaO, A1209, MgO, and alkalies, the principal components are Fe0-Fez03-SiO,. The phase equilibria relationships of this system have been elucidated by Muan~ and Schuhmann, et a1.' These data and estimates of converting atmospheres by schuhmann4 are useful tools in studying slag behavior. It would appear that in many cases reported magnetite contents of slags are apparently higher than actually is present at operating temperature. This is probably because much of it is formed during slag solidification. The quaternary systems which have Mg-0,1,0,' and addition to iron oxides and silica are also of interest in considering the reactions of the slags with basic refractories. The formation of magnetite has an important interrelationship throughout the pyrometallurgy of copper (Mossman,' Gronningsater and Drummond," Ruddle,' Elwood and Henderson") but its presence in the converter particularly relates to operating efficiency and lining life in certain instances. DEMANDS upon power plants by the war program in 1941 intensified problems of coal utilization. It was an outstanding year in that field. The domestic heating stove witnessed outstanding development; the research folks progressing so rapidly that the design of the "perfect" stove is just around the corner. Use of colored motion pictures in analyzing fuel-bed performances has reached a new high with the colored pictures taken at minute intervals and projected at sixteen frames a second as shown by the Koppers Coal Co. and the Anthracite Institute (on domestic stokers) and the Consolidated Edison Co. (industrial stokers). Continued efforts of this kind will be beneficial in analyzing further some of the "Code for Testing Coal" problems confronting Subcommittee No. 2 of the Joint A. I. M. E. - A. S. M. E. Committees.

SURVEYING of many holes drilled by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in the Metaline district has shown surprising deviations. The holes start in the Ledbetter slate (Ordovician) and pass into the underlying gently dipping Metaline limestone (Cambrian) at varying depths, locally in excess of 1000 ft. All holes start vertical, but one had deflected as much as 35° at a depth of only 300 ft. One hole was found to be deflected 70° at a depth of 1000 ft. These deviations were not indicated to the drillers by any action of the rods or machines. Analysis of the survey data in the light of the observed geology indicates that the holes deviate most in the Ledbetter slate and scarcely at all in the Metaline limestone. The upper part of the "limestone"' in most holes is a massive rock strongly altered by hydrothermal action and essentially homogeneous. The slate is only obscurely bedded but has a cleavage, varying from slight to strong, which is unrelated to bedding. Drill holes have deflected to become nearly perpendicular to the cleavage. Several plans and cross sections are submitted showing the behavior of various holes.

PHYSICAL properties have been used for a long time in characterizing different kinds of coal, and physical properties, such as friability and slacking, have been included with chemical properties in grouping coals according to the widely used system of classification adopted by the U. S. Geological Survey. Nevertheless, the usefulness of physical properties for classifying the different ranks or kinds of coal has been limited because it has not been possible to express these properties in definite form as numerical values. Because of the present wide interest in the formulation and adoption of a satisfactory system of coal classification, the Northwest Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the College of Mines of the University of Washington, has recently completed a study of the physical and chemical properties of approximately 100 different coals ranging from lignite to, anthracite. PURPOSE AND SCOPE For this investigation samples were collected in approximately 45 mines and prospects in Washington and 23 mines in other states. The following studies, in addition to proximate and ultimate analyses, were made of the samples: Determination of (1) friability, (2) slacking or weathering characteristics, (3) yield of products by low-temperature carbonization in a laboratory retort, and (4) agglutinating value. Most of the coals examined were subjected to each of the tests enumerated, but with coal of some ranks this was unnecessary in some instances, and in others it was not feasible to do the work involved.
