THE Tri-State field is now believed to be the largest zinc district in the world. It has a potential production sufficient to supply the entire zinc demands of the country. It is estimated that a train 70 miles long would be required to haul the district's 1919 output of 60 per cent. zinc concentrates. For many years,, including 1917, Missouri surpassed Oklahoma in zinc production. In 1918, however, Oklahoma led by a wide margin and, in 1919, Missouri produced less than one-sixth of the total for the three states, when Kansas replaced Missouri in second place in the production. The district is now producing one-third of the zinc of the world and twice as much as ever before at the present price.

Two striking events marked the year 1871-the establishment of the A.I.M.E. and the beginning of the portland cement industry, the most spectacular of all the nonmetallics in its development. Just as David Saylor's first portland cement, made in a little mill at Allentown, Pa., in that year was the forerunner of a mighty industry, the products of which in 1942 were made in 155 plants scattered throughout the country (having attained a value of nearly $300,000,000), so the Institute from its small beginning has attained a membership of many thousands, likewise decentralized into a series of individual sections of wide geographical distribution. Concurrent with the establishment of the Institute was also the invention of the steam drill, followed by the compressed-air drill about 1904. These mechanical drills were so immeasurably in advance of the hand drill and hammer used previously that quarrying and mining of present-day magnitude could never have been attained without them. Some outstanding occurrences have marked this eventful three quarters of a century. The concrete age, with its enormous demands for cement, aggregates and steel, is of primary importance. OXYGEN, nitrogen and hydrogen are present in' practically all metals in one or more of the following forms: (1) molecular gas in blowholes or blisters, (2) combined in nonmetallic inclusions such as nitrides, oxides or silicates, and (3) in solid solution in the metal. Gaseous elements, in some of these forms, are encountered in practically all metals and alloys but possibly have received most publicity in connection with iron and steel. In fact, the entire steel industry depends upon the control of the oxygen content during the refining process, as well as in the finished material, and it was only after the adoption of the use of efficient deoxi-dizers such as manganese that the production of good steel with a low carbon content became possible. In normally clean, sound steel the amount of hydrogen is negligible and the amounts of oxygen and nitrogen vary from a few thousandths to a few hundredths per cent. However, many of the effects attributed(27,31,40,41,53,54,55.56,62) ? to the presence of these elements are important and at first glance appear to be out of proportion to the amounts of impurities involved. The presence of oxygen is believed to affect the solubility of carbon in austenite and ferrite and thereby to affect the structure of the iron or steel. Such properties as strength, hardness, ductility, elastic .limit, impact resistance, magnetic permeability, tendency toward caustic embrittlement, irregularity in carburization, the cutting life of, tools, certain corrosion phenomena, the presence of flakes, seams, bands, ghost lines and hair cracks, and the tendency to age-harden, all have been attributed to the presence of oxygen.

This study confines itself to an examination of the two million square miles of the northern hemisphere which the geographer defines as the terrestrial Arctic, a land region in which the mean temperature of the warmest month is below 50°F-in effect, the area lying north of the tree line. The engineering and human problems there are of a different order of magnitude than is generally true of the sub-Arctic. Whether in Dawson Creek or Matanuska, in Mo i Rana or Skelleftea such problems are of the same general order as in Hibbing or Noranda. The same is not true in Kong Oscar's Fjord or Lancaster Sound.

THE following article is based on observation of college graduates entering the steel industry in technical work made during the past 25 years, the first five of which were spent as a college instructor in two engineering schools, and the last 20 in the employ of a large steel company that has hired hundreds of engineering graduates for steel-mill operations. The college graduates encountered during this period have come from many, colleges representing schools in Eastern States, Midwestern Universities, many Southern colleges, and many smaller colleges and normal training schools mostly in western Pennsylvania and Ohio. The college training of these students for engineering work naturally has varied widely and the educational qualifications of the entrants have been in many ways different. It was found at an early date that graduates of standard engineering colleges were much more adaptable than graduates in science from nontechnical schools. The engineering students seemed to be more suited to actual work in steel' plants and in general were better able to grasp a knowledge of the operations they observed. However, although the graduates of engineering schools have had somewhat better training -in physics, mathematics, and engineering, it has been a general and continual observation that most of the students employed have had inadequate training in the fundamental sciences. Since this discussion relates entirely to metallurgical engineers, it should be emphasized that students taking metallurgical engineering courses in college seem to be poorly trained in organic chemistry, physics, physical chemistry, thermodynamics, and any higher form of mathematics than simple calculus. It has been noted frequently that young engineers faced with problems in a mill that involve some mathematics generally flounder badly, and that they have little conception of physical chemistry. Another common deficiency lies in the young graduate's lack of knowledge of where to look for the more detailed literature on any subject. He reverts instinctively to some college textbook whose coverage is usually very elementary. It is recommended that such textbooks contain a bibliography of the source literature, and that students be taught to use theoriginal data. Many of the students had had previous courses in college dealing with metallurgical work such as steel melting, metallography, etc., but it was found that their grasp of these subjects was extremely sketchy. It was soon realized that an ordinary engineering graduate could be taught more about steel melting and manufacturing processes in a, few weeks in a. plant than he could learn in a college course on such subjects. A similar statement may be made regarding the ability of students to conduct laboratory work. Their lack of technique and skill in handling equipment and setting up experiments was soon apparent. THE United Verde mine is in the north central part of Arizona, on the. north-easterly slope of the Black Hills, near the town of Jerome. Ore was first discovered in the district about 1875, and the first mining claims were located by M. A. Ruffner and associates in 1877. In 1888 the late Senator William A. Clark secured control of the property and under his ownership it developed into one of the country's most important copper producers. The property was sold to the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1935, and since then has been under this Corporation's management. Except for shutdowns caused by general world-market conditions, production has been continuous from 189o to date. GEOLOGY The mineralized zone ranges in area from approximately 12 acres to less than 5 acres. All mineralization occurs in the pre-Cambrian intrusives. The first intrusion, according to geologic records, was the quartz porphyry, which later was intruded by augite diorite. Following the diorite intrusion through a series of intrusions of lesser magnitude, a pipelike mass of massive sulphide, quartz and rock was formed. The diorite forms the hanging wall of this mass, and the porphyry the footwall. Between the footwall and the sulphide a band of chlorite schist was formed, probably owing to metamorphic conditions. Commercial ore occurs along the contact of the schist and sulphide extending into the sulphide, sometimes entirely through the schist, and fingering out into the porphyry. The ore deposit was formed by replacement similar to deposits formed in limestone areas. Faulting and deformation occurred in pre-Cambrian times and again in the Tertiary period, removing approximately 2000 ft. from the top of the main United Verde ore body, forming the United Verde Extension ore body, the only other major ore body in the district. Major development work has shown that the sulphide mass extends to the 3300-ft. level, and diamond drilling below this level has indicated that the mass might extend below the 3700-ft. level, but in a diminished quantity. While many copper minerals exist in the mine, the chief commercial mineral is chalcopyrite. GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND PHYSICAL CONDITION OF MINE After over 50 years of active production, ore still exists on almost every level of the mine. This condition is due to many causes -mine fires, which broke out as early as 1894, caused the abandonment of certain areas; subsidence and ground movements retarded the cleaning up of others. Furthermore, in the early days there was such an abundance of ore that when mining became difficult it was a simple matter to replace the production by going to a deeper level. THE third year of Government exploration for potash by the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines under the authorization of the act approved June 25, 1926 (Public 424-69th Cong.) is drawing to a close. The results thus far obtained are thought to be sufficiently interesting and satisfactory to justify the presentation of a brief pre¬liminary account of the work. REVIEW OF EARLIER EXPLORATION The general geologic similarity of the Permian basin of Texas and New Mexico to the potash field of Germany had long ago suggested the possibility of the presence of potash salts somewhere in that basin, but petroleum exploration was then making little headway there and the necessary data could not be obtained. The discovery by Udden in 1912 of potash in brine from the Spur well in Dickens County, Texas, was the first direct evidence of its presence. In 1915-17 the U. S. Geological Survey drilled a test well with standard tools at Cliffside near Amarillo, but failed to find potash. Nevertheless, an observer has been kept in the field, at first in cooperation with the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology but since 1922 by the Survey alone, to secure data and samples from oil and gas tests. Since the discovery of oil in Reagan County in 1923 exploration by drilling has been rapidly extended to many parts of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. The identification of the potash-bearing mineral polyhalite was first announced by the Geological Survey in June, 1921, the material having come from cuttings from the Bryant well in Midland County and the Burns well in Dawson County, Texas. Successive discoveries and announcements of similar purport aroused widespread interest in potash exploration, which culminated in the action by Congress already noted.

IN the numbers of the Engineering and Mining Journal of June 27th and July 11th, 1874, there appeared some very complete statistics of the working of some anthracite blast-furnaces belonging to a large establishment in this country, followed by calculations of the heat requirements of the furnaces, similar to those which have been made for European furnaces by Mr. I. Lowthian Bell, Prof. Gruner, Prof. Akerman and others. To the author of these valuable papers, Mr. John A. Church, of New York, the thanks of American iron metallurgists are due for this attempt (the first, to my knowledge at least), to attack systematically and scientifically the problem of economy of fuel in our anthracite blast-furnaces, by applying the formulas obtained from European practice and from the experiments of European metallurgists, to the determination of the amounts and the modes of distribution of the heat production and absorption in our furnaces. In order to facilitate a comparison of the results thus obtained for the anthracite furnaces in question with those obtained for the best types of European coke furnaces, I have reduced to the same standard of heat units (the product of the ton and the degree Centigrade), and placed side by side, the calculations of the heat requirements of one of the furnaces of the Clarence works, as given by Mr. Bell, of a furnace at Pouzin, on the banks of the Rhone, given by Prof. Gruner, and of the anthracite furnaces for 1869-73, as given -by Mr. Church. Table I shows the different conditions of working of the three furnaces, of which Table II gives the respective heat requirements. I have made this latter table in such a manner as to give for each furnace its heat requirements, both according to the views of Mr. Bell and those of Prof. Gruner. Mr. Bell assumes that all the carbonic acid produced by the decomposition of the carbonate of lime of the charge, is reduced to carbonic oxide by contact with solid carbon ; also, that the carbon of the pig iron is a portion of that deposited in the ore in the upper part of the furnace, by the dissociation of carbonic oxide. Prof. Gruner, on the other hand, assumes that all the carbonic acid of the carbonates of the charge escapes unreduced, and that the carbon deposited in the upper part of the furnace, by the dissocia¬tion of carbonic oxide, is again converted into carbonic oxide or

BINGHAM has produced 6 per cent. of this country's copper. In total production, it ranks fourth among the copper camps of North America, the order being Butte, Michigan, Bisbee, and Bingham. In its annual production, it held that same rank until 1919, when its production was exceeded by the combined production of the Globe-Miami district of Arizona. Bingham has also been a lead camp of the first order. Utah ranks third among the lead-producing states, and its production comes largely from three camps which, in the order of their productivity, are: Bingham, Tintic, Park City. Bingham's silver production is important, but it does not rank high as a silver producer. Utah owes its rank as first among the silver-producing states to Tintic, a camp 40 miles due south of Bingham. The United States Mineral Resources reports a total production from Bingham for the period 1865-1920 having a gross value of $528,043,432. Bingham is on the eastern flank of the Oquirrh range 30 miles south-west of Salt Lake City, from which it can be reached in an hour by auto, or by the Denver & Rio Grande or the Bingham & Garfield railroads.. The automobile route is a paved road across the floor of Great Salt Lake Valley, through farming country. The Bingham & Garfield railway leaves the level of Great Salt Lake at the northern end of the Oquirrh range, and in 20 miles it climbs 2100 ft., and deposits the traveler upon a shelf cut in the side of Bingham Canyon below most of the mines, which are farther up Bingham Canyon and its tributary Carr Fork. Below lies the town, a narrow ribbon running for a couple of miles along the bottom of a canyon 2000 ft. deep-an almost impossible site for a community numbering, in prosperous times, 5000 to 7000 inhabitants drawn from all quarters of the globe. Up the canyon and down, and beneath the steep slopes nearby, and beneath the town itself, are the mining operations of over half a century.

The importance of recognizing vibration problems during the plant design stage is emphasized in this paper. Often an experienced designer can recommend what type of support to use and how to tune the structure. However, obtaining sufficient information is a serious problem dealing with vibration. Vibration is a well known phenomena which, simply and generally, can be defined as a periodic motion. It is experienced in nature as caused by eerth- quake, wind, or ocean waves, and must be dealt with in the design of structure or ships. It must be realized that wherever there are moving or rotating elements, it is possible that unbalanced forces may induce vibration in the elements themselves, in adjacent parts, or in the supporting structure. Under certain circumstances, vibration will destroy machines or structures quickly and totally. The most widely known case is the total collapse of the Tacoma bridge when subjected to a wind of only 42 mph. Failures due to vibration of machines and/or their supports may occur in industrial plants where heavy equipment employed in the process must be supported and several machines are combined in close proximity. Since 1941 not more than 15 per cent of aii wildcat wells drilled in Louisiana have been successful. This figure is not too discouraging, especially in view of the fact that during the same period approximately 80 per cent of all wells (average 701 wells per year) drilled in or adjoining producing areas were successfully completed. However, a somewhat discouraging aspect concerning Louisiana's wildcat completions is that in 1942 only 12 out of 20 fields found were oil fields; in 1943, only 13 out of 24; and in 1944, only 8 out of 21. This means that an operator has less than a 50:50 chance of finding an oil field. In other words, it is more likely that he will find a gas-condensate field. This fact has become increasingly evident as the data for each year are compiled and compared. Yet, strangely enough, operators are reluctant to accept this fact and plan accordingly. Certainly they cannot continue to search for oil fields and, for the most part, end with shut-in gas-condensate wells. The reason for shutting in is that there is no immediate and satisfactory market for all the gas being discovered. The solution, and it is a very satisfactory one, as experience in Louisiana has already demonstrated, is cycling. The advantages of this type of operation of gas-condensate fields, especially where the entire field is pooled and unitized, should be self-evident. These advantages will become increasingly more important, especially now that legislatures, regulatory bodies, royalty owners, and others are beginning to realize that "reasonable development" in a field is not indicated by the number of wells completed, but rather by the method of development. To complete a great many wells that can produce at only, partial capacity is waste. Producing hydrocarbons from these wells and not subjecting them to processing by surface operations, in order to recover all liquefiable hydrocarbons, is waste. Permitting bottom-hole pressures to drop or gas-oil ratios to increase because of excessive production is waste. Loss of leases and of wells because of inability to produce or to meet lease obligations is waste. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly apparent that a reservoir entirely pooled and unitized with a minimum number of completions, but over which there is exerted careful control so as to provide maximum recovery and the processing of all hydrocarbons brought to the surface, is the only logical and reasonable method of developing a gas-condensate field. Oil Production Twenty-one new fields, including three rediscoveries, were found during 1944. Three of these new discoveries—Delhi in northeast Louisiana, Good Hope in southeast Louisiana, and West Tepetate in southwest Louisiana—should add considerably to Louisiana's oil reserves. The other discoveries were either gas condensate or of apparently little consequence. those who are to lie in the torn fields of France. Today we read of Lieut. William Hague, whom we said good-by to hardly more than a month ago-—so clean, ao young, so strong—who, abandoning the professional career in which he had won such commendation and which held for him such promise, leaving his wife and his little boy to whom he was so dear, answered at once the call for men of his training, and is now dead "in the service of his country." There are many friends of that courtly and dignified gentleman James D. Hague who recall, both here and in Stockbridge, the parental pride in the promising lad of such a little time ago—the eager schoolboy at Milton, the rather grave youth at Harvard, his entry into new experiences in the Western mining world, and who, seeing him during his stay at Camp Upton, realized that the old Puritan stock was still sound and true—and now with him the struggle is over and the sacrifice made. Captain William Teasdale Hall Captain Hall, who was admitted to Junior Membership in the Institute in 1915, while still a student of mining at the University of Toronto, was killed in action in France on May 19, 1917. Captain Hall was born in Toronto in 1893, and received his academic training at Harbord College, from 1908 to 1911, when he entered the University of Toronto, School of Practical Science. During the three summer vacations of his university course, he was employed by the O'Brien mine at Gowganda, next by the McIntyre Mining Co., at Porcupine, and finally by the Mines Branch of the Geological Survey, which was conducting magnetic surveys to the north of Port Arthur. When war was first declared, Mr. Hall endeavored to join the artillery as an officer, and for the purpose secured a provisional lieutenancy with a Hamilton battery, but he did not receive an overseas appointment, and on being graduated as a mining engineer in 1915, he was offered a position in Chile, which he accepted. He left Toronto on May 27, 1915, and was engaged in Chile as a mining engineer for nearly a year. In the latter part of April, 1916, he decided to offer himself again for service at the front. He crossed the Andes and sailed for LiverpooI, where he landed on May 13, 1916. On May 27, 1916, Captain Hall was given a commission as a lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps, 21st Squadron. He went to the front on Sept. 1, 1916, and remained there continuously. His

THE taconites in general are hard, tough ores, difficult to grind. Liberation of iron mineral constituents usually is accomplished by grinding the ore through at least 100 mesh, and often it has been found necessary to grind substantially through 325 mesh to achieve satisfactory recovery and grade in the concentration process. Because of the fineness of grind required and the enormous tonnages of material contemplated for treatment in the future, costs resulting from grinding media wear and power consumption, together with capital investment required for comminution, approach astronomical figures. Economy in any one of these elements per ton of material ground could very well reflect a considerable saving to the ferrous industry in yearly costs. With this in mind, the Research Laboratories of Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. have launched a program to discover means of effecting this economy. The initial phase of the work as described here deals with a heat treatment of crushed raw ore, followed by thermal shock in cooling, for the preparation of rod mill feed. Several investigators 1-5 have noted an improvement in the grindabilities of ores treated in this manner. One investigator2 subjected low grade iron ores to heat treatment in an electric furnace. Basing his conclusions on screen analyses of crushed products, he observed that treated ore was more easily crushed than the untreated. He reported that observation of the treated and untreated ore through a microscope revealed cracks following the grain boundaries in treated ore, whereas no cracks were present in untreated ore. However, few if any have quantified the improvement in terms of total hp hours saved, reduction of wear of grinding media, or reduction of capital costs of grinding equipment involved. By means of Bond rod mill and ball mill grindabilities6 and by comparative wear tests, the conditions maintained during this investigation have been definitely evaluated. Heat treatment experiments have been made on a batch scale in a muffle furnace, followed by continuous scale experiments in a rotary kiln under various conditions of temperature, atmosphere, retention time, and quenching to determine the combination that would give the greatest improvement in the grindability of a taconite without affecting adversely the magnetic susceptibility of the magnetite. From these data, relative costs have been calculated for grinding both untreated and heat treated ore on a basis of plant capacity of 120 tons per hour. Heat requirements for a rotary kiln, as well as the kiln capacity required for the treatment, have been estimated. For these tests 50 tons of ore were obtained from the Aurora mine of the Erie Mining Co., Hibbing, Minn. The ore was reported' to have been selected from the magnetic portion of the lower chert horizons. An average chemical analysis of this portion is shown in Table I and an approximate mineralogical analysis is shown in Table II. No attempt was made to differentiate between the various silicates because the compositions vary widely on the different horizons and depend on the degree of oxidation. Minnesotite, however, is the predominant silicate. The siderite grains were dispersed throughout the ore but were essentially associated with the rock-forming minerals. During the year 1939, Mexican production totaled 42,479,000 bbl.; a daily average of 116,381 bbl. or a little over 2 per cent of the estimated world production. The Mexican Government operates 100 per cent of the refining branch of the industry, 100 per cent of the domestic distribution, 96 per cent of the crude production and 92 per cent of the total exports. No discussion of the Mexican petroleum industry in 1939 is adequate without reference to the "expropriation" of the foreign-owned oil properties in Mexico by executive fiat on March 18, 1938. The forcible seizing of the properties culminated a long series of efforts on the part of the Mexican Government to obtain control of the oil properties developed through foreign initiative and with foreign capital in Mexico. The heart of the issue is whether the Mexican nation or any nation may with impunity confiscate the legally acquired properties of American citizens. The Department of State of our Government has in its communications to Mexico emphasized the fact that its "expropriation" of American properties was confiscatory because Mexico had failed to make "adequate, effective and prompt compensation"; that the taking was no less confiscatory "because there may be an expressed intent to pay at some time in the future," and that, consequently, "Mexico has assumed and continues to assume to exercise a right without compliance with the condition necessary to give such exercise a recognizable status of legality." Mexico has professed its willingness to pay for the oil properties but at the same time through its Supreme Court it has declared that the owners or lessees do not have the exclusive right to extract and dispose of the oil in the subsoil. This is a reversal of the Mexican position with respect to oil as set forth in the Mexican mining laws, affirmed by Mexican Supreme Court decisions, and as clarified in the Warren-Paync and the Morrow-Calles agreements, as well as in diplomatic correspondence. DURING the past year and a half, the Territorial Department of Mines in Alaska has conducted a modest experimental program for the purpose of determining the extent to which magnetic and resistivity methods can be used in interior Alaska in connection with prospecting, mining and geological studies. Since little information is available concerning previous work,1,2 and since conditions differ considerably from those in most other regions, it was considered advisable to make a general study of the possibilities and limitations of the two methods, rather than a detailed study of any single problem. PROBLEMS One of the most serious handicaps to prospecting and geological study in interior Alaska, especially in the mature regions, is a cover of unconsolidated deposits ranging in thickness from a few feet to several hundred feet. These deposits, some of which are permanently frozen, consist of silt with varying proportions of vegetation and windblown material in the valleys and of residual deposits on the hills.3,4 The problems treated here are caused by the existence of this overburden: I. Location of buried placers. 2. Determination of depth and areal distribution of permanently frozen and of thawed unconsolidated deposits. 3. Location of water-bearing beds under unconsolidated deposits. INSTRUMENTS AND METHODS Magnetic and direct-current resistivity methods were used because they are relatively simple, rapid and inexpensive and because generally they are well suited to the study of the problems indicated. The instruments used were a vertical Schmidt-type magnetometer and a direct-current resistivity instrument similar to those used by the Geophysical Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey.5 For placer surveys with the magnetometer, a sensitivity of about 25 gammas per scale division was found suitable. For resistivity studies of frozen and thawed overburden and of underground water, the Lee partitioning method6 was found to be most generally suitable. In the Lee method a central potential electrode is placed midway between the two potential electrodes of the Wenner four-electrode configuration.7 Nonpolarizable electrodes were made from unglazed porcelain pots about 10 cm. high and 5 cm. in diameter. In order to retard evaporation of the electrolyte the sides of the pots were glazed, inside and out, with clear Duco lacquer. For resistivity work in cold weather, a nonfreezing electrolyte consisting of equal parts of ethylene glycol and a saturated water solution of copper sulphate proved satisfactory. Stainless steel rods of 3/4-in. diameter made excellent current electrodes because their bright finish enabled good ground contacts to be made.

During the year 1939, Mexican production totaled 42,479,000 bbl.; a daily average of 116,381 bbl. or a little over 2 per cent of the estimated world production. The Mexican Government operates 100 per cent of the refining branch of the industry, 100 per cent of the domestic distribution, 96 per cent of the crude production and 92 per cent of the total exports. No discussion of the Mexican petroleum industry in 1939 is adequate without reference to the "expropriation" of the foreign-owned oil properties in Mexico by executive fiat on March 18, 1938. The forcible seizing of the properties culminated a long series of efforts on the part of the Mexican Government to obtain control of the oil properties developed through foreign initiative and with foreign capital in Mexico. The heart of the issue is whether the Mexican nation or any nation may with impunity confiscate the legally acquired properties of American citizens. The Department of State of our Government has in its communications to Mexico emphasized the fact that its "expropriation" of American properties was confiscatory because Mexico had failed to make "adequate, effective and prompt compensation"; that the taking was no less confiscatory "because there may be an expressed intent to pay at some time in the future," and that, consequently, "Mexico has assumed and continues to assume to exercise a right without compliance with the condition necessary to give such exercise a recognizable status of legality." Mexico has professed its willingness to pay for the oil properties but at the same time through its Supreme Court it has declared that the owners or lessees do not have the exclusive right to extract and dispose of the oil in the subsoil. This is a reversal of the Mexican position with respect to oil as set forth in the Mexican mining laws, affirmed by Mexican Supreme Court decisions, and as clarified in the Warren-Paync and the Morrow-Calles agreements, as well as in diplomatic correspondence. There are a number of problems associated with underground coal mining, but the most serious and important are often related to the ground control. The influence of the prevailing geological conditions and features on the stability of underground mining has been outlined in this paper. Special emphasis has been given to the importance of geological techniques in the evaluation of coal mine roof conpetency prior to and during the mining operations. In addition to this, typi- cal ground control problems owing to the geological abnormalities have been depicted by appropriate case histories from coal seams in the State of Utah. The interdependence between longwall design and road- way stability on the one hand and geologic features on the other hand are shown in this study.

Lieutenant.Louis Baird Louis Baird, a Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery of the British Army, died on the battlefield in 1915. Lieutenant Baird was born July 28, 1880, at Stirling, Scotland. His technical education was obtained at King's College, Melbourne, Australia, in 1893 to 1895, and at the Technical College at Glasgow, Scotland, in 1897 to 1900. After an apprenticeship with the Mexican J. & 8. Rec. Co. of Mexico, lasting from 1900 to 1903, he became mill superintendent for the Cia. Minera Benito, at Juarez, Zac. During the year 1905-6 he was assistant manager of the Caridelaria y Anexas, at Pinos, Zac., and from 1906 to 1907 was engineer with the Cia. Minera Jalisco, San Sebastian, Jalisco. At the time of his admission to the Institute, in 1908, he was practising as a mining engineer at Etzatlan, Jalisco, Mexico. For the next four years he practised his profession in the City of Guadalajara, Jalisco, removing, in 1913, to Ixtlan del Rio, in the State of Tepic. It was from here that he returned to England to put his services at the disposal of the British Government. The Institute is not definitely informed as to how, where, or when Lieutenant Baird met his death. iCaptain John H. Ballamy John H. Ballamy, Captain on the Regimental Staff of the 103d Engineers, was killed near Fismes, on Aug. 9, 1918. Captain Ballamy was born at Plvmouth. Pa.. in 1886 and graduated from' the High School of that town in 1903. In the following year he began work as a coal miner, and at the same time began the study of mining engineering in the evening and any other spare time. The continuous increase in energy costs has made it necessary to consider a broader use of belt conveyors for the transportation of material from the mine pit to the processing plant. Hard rock has to be crushed before it can be moved by belt conveyors. Systems are in the planning stage for mining hard rock, such as copper and iron ore, by using high-capacity, mobile, or semi-portable crushers. The mobile crusher is located in the pit, and the crushed material is transported by energy-efficient, shiftable belt conveyors out of the pit.
