J. Chipman—It has been my privilege to discuss this work with the authors on several occasions and to observe at first hand the experimental methods employed. I wish, therefore, to emphasize certain points which they have mentioned only briefly with regard to the experimental techniques. The rotating induction furnace as here employed interposes liquid metal between slag and refractory thus preventing the two nonmetallic parts of the system from reaching equilibrium with one another. It is therefore impossible for the metallic phase to be completely in equilibrium with both the slag and the crucible. The metal also acts as a partially permeable membrane allowing certain components, including oxygen, to diffuse from slag to crucible. This transfer results in building up on the face of the crucible a layer of material whose composition is in part dependent on that of the bath. Reactions between the layer and the solid refractory are slow, as evidenced by the rather good life of the crucible. Hence it seems probable that the layer is more nearly in equilibrium with the metal than with the underlying crucible material and that, once it is established under a bath of a given composition, its further reactions with that bath are slow. Additions to slag or bath may be followed by changes in the layer; and time must be allowed for virtual completion of such changes, before it can be assumed that slag and metal are in equilibrium. We may judge from the results reported that, in general, this was the case and that the data represent at least quite close approximations to slag-metal equilibrium. Data on deoxidation and on oxygen solubility are no better than the analytical methods employed. The vacuum fusion method as used by the authors seems entirely adequate for the samples analyzed. I have had frequent occasion to compare results with their laboratory, always with very satisfactory agreement. The determination of aluminum at very low concentrations is perhaps an even more difficult procedure. Here also the colorimetric method used has been worked out with great care and is undoubtedly the most dependable method available. The discrepancy between observed and calculated deoxidation or solubility lines is not to be explained as the result of experimental errors, either in the sampling or analysis of the metal. Nor is it to be blamed upon inaccuracies in the several kinds of indirect data upon which the calculated results were based. It is true that both the observed and the calculated lines admit of some uncertainty as to their exact locations, but the uncertainties are small compared to the wide gap which separates the two lines. The authors have pointed out the real cause of the discrepancy. In all of their experiments the solid phase was not Al2O3 but a mixed oxide containing iron and aluminum. This suggests an extension of the calculated values to include equilibrium with the spinel FeO . A12O3. The free energies of FeO and A12O3 are known, that of the spinel is not. However, it cannot differ greatly from that of its component oxides for even in the more stable spinel, chromite, the free energy of formation from the oxides is less than 10,000 cal. For purposes of calculation we shall call this free energy X and solve for values of X lying between zero and 10,000 cal. The other data required are taken from the forthcoming revision of "Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking" and are given in the following equations in which underlined symbols indicate elements dissolved in liquid steel and the standard concentrations are 1 pct. ?F° at 1600°C, cal ?LA = 2 Al + 3 O; + 107,200 FeO = Fe + 0; + 5,460 FeO + A12O3 = Fe + 2A1 + 4 0; + 112,660 — X The corresponding equilibrium concentrations are shown in fig. 21. The line marked A12O3 corresponds to the first equation, those marked FeO . AL2O3 correspond to the last, with X = 0, 5000 and 10,000 cal, respectively. The two upper lines represent the data of Hilty and Crafts and of Wentrup and Hieber. The points are the observations of Hilty and Crafts in the presence of 0.50 pct Mn.

SWISHER and ~urkdogan' have determined the solubility of oxygen in a iron. They found it to lie between 7 and 10.5 at.-ppm at 881°C. Using earlier work on the permeability of oxygen in bcc iron,' they arrived at the following expression for the diffusion coefficient of oxygen in bcc iron (k = Boltzmann's constant, T = absolute temperature): where The present authors3 have estimated the activation energy QD for the diffusion of oxygen in bcc iron in two different ways from various experimental data.2'4"6 In the first method QD + QS (QS = heat of solution for oxygen in bcc iron in thermodynamic equilibrium with solid FeO) was determined either from data on the reduction of FeO with hydrogen4 or from measurements of the internal oxidation of silicon in a iron.5 Using an estimate of QS from investigations of the oxygen solubility in 6 iron2 (in thermodynamic equilibrium with molten FeO) Q = 0.97 ev or Q~ = 1.06 ev were obtained. From the magnitude of these values it was concluded that oxygen migrates interstitially in bcc iron and that consequently the activation energy QD for diffusion of oxygen has to be identified with the migration energy E~ of the oxygen atoms. Therefore, for a second estimate of QD from the diffusion coefficient of oxygen in 6 iron at 1450" ~,~ we used the theoretical expression:3 (a = length of elementary cube edge, m = mass of interstitially diffusing atom, sM = migration entropy), applicable to diffusion via the octahedral interstices in bcc lattices. Taking sM = 3.8 k (migration entropy of carbon in a iron), one gets Q = 0.90 ev. Hence, in Ref. 3 Q = (0.98 *0.1) ev was proposed as a plausible value for the diffusion energy of oxygen in bcc iron. sM + 9 (9 = solution entropy for oxygen in bcc iron) can be determined from permeability measurements.4 Using the above-mentioned estimate for QS , the following expression for the solubility c (atomic concentration) of oxygen (in thermodynamic equilibrium with solid FeO) in bcc iron was derived: From [4] the solubility of oxygen at 881°C in a iron is calculated to lie between 0.6 and 12 at.-ppm. "The enrichment behavior of phosphorus in CaO-SiO2-FeOx-P2O5 slag was studied by making an investigation on the distribution of phosphorous content in slag and 2CaO·SiO2 phase. The research results showed that the existing 2CaO·SiO2 solid particles in slag were the sites for the phosphorous enrichment. The enrichment process of phosphorus in CaO-SiO2-FeOx-P2O5 slag can be recognized as: mass transfer of phosphorus from bulk slag toward the surface of 2CaO·SiO2 particle, superficial dissolution reaction of phosphorus to 2CaO·SiO2 and diffusion of phosphorus through the product layer of 2CaO·SiO2-3CaO·P2O5 solid solution to the inner of 2CaO·SiO2 particle. Compared to the 2CaO·SiO2 particles with larger size (500µm to 1000µm), the completion time of enrichment was shorter for the particles with smaller size (less than 50µm).IntroductionDuring ironmaking and steelmaking, significant amounts of slag are produced. Contrast to the high utilization of ironmaking slag, the treatment of steelmaking slag is more difficult and challengeable, and therefore, an alternative approach is to recycle the steelmaking slag inside the ironmaking and steelmaking process itself. The main limitation to the reuse of steelmaking slag inside the process is that the refining process may be aggravated caused by the phosphorous accumulation if it is used in the blast furnace burden [1]. At the same time, the phosphorous content of steelmaking slag (approximately 1%~5% P2O5) is too low for it to be used as raw material for fertilizer [2, 3]. Moreover, owing to the diminishing supply of global iron ores with low phosphorous content, the control of phosphorus in iron and steelmaking processes has become an increasing problem, and as a result, more amounts of high phosphorus containing steelmaking slag are produced. Therefore, a valuable approach is quite appreciated in which the steelmaking slag is recycled within the ironmaking and steelmaking process and at the same time, the high phosphorus-containing phases in the steelmaking slag, suitable for use as fertilizer can be separated and recycled effectively [4]."

Under Bureau of Mines Contract H0122007, Telcom, Inc., with the assistance of Fenix & Scisson, Inc., conducted a 17-month research and development project aimed at provid¬ing a field-test model of a guidance system for use with the Bureau of Mines Probe Drill. The Probe Drill is a part of the Bureau's Mine Rescue System developed under Contract H0101262. Volume I of this report is subdivided into seven sections. Volume II consists of a number of supporting appendices. In addition, there were delivered under the Contract, a number of other documents which are referenced in the text. Section 1 deals with essential contract information, Program Background, and a general system description. Section 2 covers the project chronology in brief. Section 3 is a digest of design considerations and implementation related to the requirements of the Contract. Section 4 is a description of the System, including illustrations of the hardware, and software. Section 5 is devoted to Operation and Maintenance. Para. 5.1 describes step-by-step field assembly and disassembly of the downhole unit. Para. 5.2 covers Operation. Para. 5.3 covers various aspects of maintenance from the lowest field echelon possible. Higher level maintenance must be accomplished in the laboratory, for the present field-test model. Para. 5.4 covers system calibration. Para. 5.5 covers detailed step-by-step operational sequences. Section 6 covers the results of the field testing, post-test evaluation, and recommendations. Essentially, we conclude that the present hardware (field-test model) has proven every aspect of system performance, but failed to provide reliable assurance of an operationally ready system. Telcom, therefore, recommends a three-phase continuing effort devised to provide the operationally-ready model of the system.

In a recent publication,31 Darken has derived an equation to describe thermodynamic behavior in ternary metallic solutions with compositions near pure component 1: Eq. [I] is understood to be a general equation, consistent with the ternary Gibbs-Duhem equation, which is proposed as a logical formalism in view of observed behavior in some binary metallic solutions31'32 rich In Eq. and am are constants obtainable from the 1-2 and 1-3 binaries. The parameter 023 may be determined from measurements on the ternary The purpose of this discussion is to compare Eq. [I) or [3] with other ternary formulations involving binary terms, within the regions of validity of Eqs. [I], [2], and [3]. First, the ternary point is considered to be at the intersection of two composition paths, one with constant N1 and another with constant N2/N3 as shown in Fig. 10. The terms in Eq. [3] may be related to the binary points shown by multiplying the first term on the right-hand side of Eq. [3] by N2 (1) /l -N1, the second term by the third term by and the fourth term by each multiplier being unity: It should be noted here that no suggestion has been made that either the binary or the ternary systems form regular solutions. However, Eq. [5] and hence Eq. Este trabalho apresenta o estudo da influência do ciclo de resfriamento em discos cerâmicos produzidos pelo processo de moldagem por injeção em baixa pressão (MIBP). Foram injetados discos utilizando uma suspensão cerâmica com 86% em peso de Alumina (Al2O3) e 14% em peso de veículo orgânico e com dimensões de Ø80x3 mm. Três condições de resfriamento foram utilizadas para a fabricação dos discos cerâmicos: baixa taxa de resfriamento, alta taxa de resfriamento (ambos acionados após a injeção da suspensão cerâmica) e resfriamento contínuo durante todo o ciclo de injeção. Para avaliação foram considerados aspectos dimensionais (contração) e geométricos (planicidade e circularidade). Os resultados mostraram que a condição com baixa taxa de resfriamento obteve maior contração dimensional, maior desvio de planicidade, enquanto a alta taxa de resfriamento obteve uma contração intermediária e menor desvio de planicidade. Utilizando resfriamento contínuo as amostras apresentaram baixa contração devido a maior compactação da suspensão cerâmica na moldagem.

My reaction when first asked to present this paper was; "What could I possibly say that would hold the audience?s attention for 15 minutes? What could I offer that anyone familiar with the Nevada Barite Industry wouldn't already know?" Well, quite frankly I can't. The industry has certainly been anything but exciting for the past 10 years and, in fact, quite depressing. The challenge, for those few of us left in it, has been to keep it alive. At times it has felt like a doctor must feel with a terminally ill patient. All I can do is recap the past ten years, review the present state of the industry, and offer a few personal opinions and observations as to where I think we are headed.

A colloquium on 'Recent Developments in Wearresistant Materials', organized by the Technical Programme Committee: Physical Metallurgy of the SAIMM, was held at Mintek on 7th May, 1985. After delegates had been welcomed by Dr P.T. Wedepohl, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Mr J.D. Austin, President of the SAIMM, delivered the opening address. Corrigenda to article on copper* I read with considerable interest the recent articles on copper by Mr C.O. Beale as published in the Journal. However, in Part 11 the section dealing with Prieska Copper Mines (Pty) Limited contained several factual errors, details of which are given below.

No presente trabalho busca-se avaliar o comportamento do solo virgem e com os resíduos, compactado, uma alternativa para área de Construção Civil. O estudo tem o objetivo de avaliar o solo (classificado como solo laterítico); e solo composto de polipropileno reciclado (rPP) e pó de madeira (PM); caracterizando a forma física e mecânica de rPP/PM para aterro. Neste trabalho, investiga-se a influencia dessas adições no comportamento mecânico de camadas compactadas de solo, avaliando o efeito do teor de composto rPP/PM. As amostras de polipropileno reciclado (rPP), e serragem (PM), foram separadas cada uma em 10%, 20% e 30%, e aquecidas juntas, após o aquecimento misturadas ao solo. Sendo classificado como solo de baixa compressibilidade (ML), caracterizando um silte argiloso. Segundo a classificação HBR, tem-se P200 < 35%, LL > 40, IP < 10 e IG =0, assim o grupo de classificação pertence ao grupo A-2, subgrupos A-2-5. Os resultados de Índice de Suporte Califórnia (ISC) do solo em estudo foram de 41% para amostra de solo e 130% para amostra de solo mais compósito.

Durante o lingotamento contínuo de placas de aço, muitas vezes ocorre uma queda acentuada de temperatura ao longo do processo. Fatores como o tempo de lingotamento, o superaquecimento inicial da panela de aço, a presença de cascão na panela, entre outros, podem alterar significativamente a taxa de queda de temperatura, levando muitas vezes à interrupção prematura do lingotamento. Neste trabalho, será mostrado o desenvolvimento de um modelo de predição de temperatura ao final do lingotamento de uma panela de aço. Este modelo permite antecipar, com razoável nível de incerteza, a temperatura final do aço no distribuidor durante trocas de panela, de forma que forneça subsídios para a tomada de decisão sobre a interrupção do lingotamento, ou a antecipação de abertura de panela com retorno de aço. Desta forma, o índice de trabalho das Máquinas de Lingotamento Contínuo (MLC’s) da ArcelorMittal Aços Planos América do Sul seria maximizado, e com possível melhoria no Rendimento de Aço. O modelo se encontra em fase de implantação e validação na MLC#3, onde foram definidos parâmetros com critérios de decisão de interrupção/antecipação de troca de panela.

After World War I and 1931-33 depression, gold mainly reserved for official international transactions and internal use restricted. Changes since 1971 have shrunk official international use of gold. International payments deficits and surpluses now financed by private and official credit, rarely by gold. In the iron-cobalt system there are several property-composition relationships of theoretical importance. The alloys are ferromagnetic exhibiting a maximum saturation at approximately 33 at. pct cobalt;' the interatomic distances at room temperature show large positive deviations from Vegard's rule;2 and in the region of 50 at. pct cobalt there is an order-disorder transition2 which has a large effect on other properties. The thermal expansion data for the system have been reported only from room temperature to 100 C and for this temperature range a minimum in coefticient in the rcgion of 50 at. pct cobalt is well established.3,4,6 This paper reports the expansion properties in the iron-cobalt system for temperatures from 30 to 850°C, shows the correlation with other physical properties, and proposes an explanation for the tcrrelation. Experimental Procedure The thermal expansivities of iron-cobalt alloys in 10 pct steps in composition were determined from 30 to about 850°C. The major series of alloys was prepared by induction melting from Armco iron and cobalt rondelles with the addition of about 0.6 wt pct manganese. This series was supplemented by three compositions: high purity electrolytic iron, high purity electrolytic cobalt, and an alloy of 52.1 wt pct cobalt prepared from the high purity electrolytic iron and electrolytic cobalt by vacuum-melting. The compositions of both series of alloys are given in Table I. The specimens for measurement were prepared from the cast ingots by first hot-swaging followed in most instances by cold-swaging to 0.180-in. diam rod. Some alloys in the region of 5c pct cobalt, because of inherent cold-brittleness, were swaged hot to the final diameter. The expansion specimens were approximately 2 1/2 in. long with flat-ground and polished ends. Before measurement they were annealed in hydrogen for I hr at 900°C. In the apparatus used for the thermal expansivity measurements (Fig I), a modification of that designed by Hidnert and Sweeney,? the differential expausion between the specimen and vitreous silica was measured by a dial micrometer reading to 0.001 mm. An invar fixture supported the dial gauge, and this fixture, in turn, was connected to a split invar collar which supported the outer silica tube. A pyrex "T" was placed over the outcr silica tube and was sealed to the invar collar by Apiezon Q sealing compound. A movable hollow vitreous silica rod which rested on top of the test specimen slid through a flexible rubber diaphragm cemented to the top of the pyrex "T." Heat capacity measurements of akermanite ( Ca,MgSiO ) , cordierite (Mg2A14 Sig018 ) , gehlenite ( Ca₂Al₂ SiO ) , and merwinite ( Ca ,MgSiO ) were conducted over the temperature range from 50 ° to 298.15 ° K. The entropies at 298.15 K ( expressed in cal / deg mole ) were evaluated as follows : Akermanite , 50.0 ± 0.5 ; cordierite , 97.3 ± 0.9 ; gehlenite , 47.4 ± 0.4 ; and merwinite , 60.5 ± 0.5 . All four compounds have positive entropies of formation from their constituent oxides at 298.15 ° K ; the values range from 4.6 cal /deg mole for akermanite to 10.1 cal / deg mole for cordierite .

An elongate belt containing granodiorite stocks with associated stockwork molybdenum mineralisation in west Nelson is correlated with the I-type Separation Point Suite of mid Cretaceous age. Trace element characteristics of the 'Mo-granites', and the Separation Point Batholith strongly suggest a primitive, subcrustal origin for these granitoids, by partial melting of oceanic basaltic crust or upper mantle material in a subduction zone. They were emplaced in the upper crust without undergoing significant differentiation or contamination by sialic crust. Molybdenum, which is at levels of approximately 5 ppm in unaltered granite, is not significantly reduced in altered (but unmineralised) granite. This suggests the metallisation has a magmatic, subcrustal source and is not derived by hydrothermal leaching of upper crustal rocks or the granitic host rocks. Geochemistry of the 'Mo-granite' belt, in particular low K2O, calc-alkali to calcic Peacock Index, high Sr and TiO2, and low Rb, Nb and F, suggest classification as calcic granitoids similar to those which host porphyry copper deposits, indicating grades of mineralisation are likely to be low.

Progress made in a second and final metallurgical investigation made by the Bureau of Mines of near-surface Hawaiian bauxitic deposits from Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii Islands, and on a deeper deposit from Kauai, is reported. Previously reported Al2O3 extractions were increased by modifying conventional processes to fit the ore being tested. Increases in Al2O3 extraction were: Kauai, from 82.8 to 95.4 percent; Maui, 85.5 to 94.1 percent; and Hawaii, from 79.5 to 86.4 percent. Use of a "caustic-reduction sinter, leaching, and magnetic separation process" for Al2O3 extraction also produced an iron concentrate of commercial grade, except for titanium content. No successful method was developed for the recovery of a satisfactory titanium concentrate.

Batcheller, we are able to give the following extracts from a letter written by Mr. Caetani: It has been a nice idea of yours to collect for me all those scraps of news I received a few days ago and to send me such a long interesting letter. In four years war I have had practically no news. Burch wrote several times but several of his letters were lost and so mine. I believe I even wrote to you. Much has changed since our last days in Telluride; here and there many have disappeared. Of myself I will tell you in a few words: for a year I was in Cadore(?), where I had the good luck to do to the others what they wished to do to me, and had good luck on my side. Then I went to Macedonia for 5 months, did little fighting but lost my faithful fellow officer and companion.
