This Bureau of Mines report presents a Fortran IV computer program for the structural analysis of (1) protective canopies used in underground mines to protect equipment operators from roof falls and (2) rollover protective structures (ROPS) used in surface mines to protect equipment operators during vehicle overturn accidents. The program, entitled PLASTIC CANOPY, permits rapid and inexpensive calculation of the ultimate strength and deformation characteristics of a canopy for a variety of static loading conditions. The structure is modeled as a series of interconnected beam and/or plate elements. Stresses in, and displacements of, each structural element are computed and printed out at the yield strength of the canopy, at several intermediate load levels between the yield and ultimate strength of the canopy, and at the ultimate strength of the canopy. Other features of the program include prediction of buckling of a beam member under combined axial compression loading and bending, plotting of the input geometry of the structure, and plotting of the deformed shape of the loaded structure. Spent potliner is generated in the electrolytic process of reducing alumina to make aluminum metal using molten fluoride electrolytes. Spent potliner (SPL), obtained at the end of the pots life contains a small amount of cyanide and fluoride which present environmental problems. SPL became a listed hazardous waste under RCRA (KO88) in July, 1990. One of the possible uses of spent potliner is as a substitute for Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) as a fluidizer in iron- and steelmaking and in the glass industry. A low viscosity and a low melting point are prime requirements for accomplishing the above. In the present study, viscosity measurements were performed. Effect of various additives, such as sand, limestone, dicalcium silicate dust, and MgO baghouse dust on the viscosity of SPL was studied. The results showed that with the addition of sand and limestone, very high fluidity of SPL melt can be obtained at significantly low temperatures. The results suggest that spent potliner mixed with additives could potentially be used as a substitute fluidizer.

The principal function of the Bell limestone mine, of the American Lime & Stone Co., at Bellefonte, Pa., is to supply raw material to the company's modern rotary kiln plant at Bellefonte. Because mining costs are naturally higher than many open quarries with more favorably lying strata, it cannot compete, except to a limited extent, in the markets for road material and fluxing stone. In the broad sense, mining does have an advantage over the average open quarry when the end products are designed for and controlled by process and final inspection for the exacting demands of the industrial and chemical markets. Approximately 80 per cent of the output of the Bell mine is sold in the industrial and chemical markets. And as higher standards are set each year for construction and agricultural work, the remainder of the mine output goes to these two classes. Mining produces more fines than open quarries, and these fines are difficult to market; on the other hand, owing to absence of contaminating clay and impure rock, a greater percentage of the output of a mine is marketable. Because of the great production of fines, rotary kilns for lime burning are necessary when the stone must be mined. In 1921 the American Lime & Stone Co. operated 19 quarries and 72 lime shaft kilns spread over an area of 40 miles between Bellefonte and Altoona, Pa. At that time the lime-production capacity of the 72 kilns amounted to approximately 700 tons per day. After 15 years the company operates three rotary kilns and six shaft kilns, with a combined output of approximately 500 tons of lime per day, concentrated in its single Bellefonte plant (Fig. 1). Its only stone-producing plants are now the limestone mine at Bellefonte and a construction-stone open quarry at Union Furnace, near Tyrone, Pennsylvania. Since the middle of 1922, the management of the American Lime R. Stone Co. has been under the direction and ownership of the Warner Company, of Philadelphia. Regions with extensive reserves of brown coal but with inadequate deposits of hard coal provide a particularly suitable field for the application of brown coal petrology.In fact, this discipline is indispensable where brown coal is to form the basis for high-quality products of upgrading. Both chemical and physical analyses are required in addition to the techniques employed in coal petrology, but it is the macropetrographic and the microscopic investigations that are of decisive and specific importance.Foremost among the methods of upgrading brown coal is briquetting. From the raw materials aspect the biochemical rank of coal (i.e. the type of deposit) and the coal variety (i.e. the lithotype) exert a marked influence on briquette strength. These are also the significant factors in the suitability of a brown coal for high temperature carbonization; here the demands on coal quality are even more exacting if adequately sintered and therefore high-strength lump chars are to be obtained. The principle applies also to the char from low temperature carbonization. There are close relationships between the tar yield and the remission of the coal.The reflectivity measurement therefore provides a rapid method for evaluating the suitability of a brown coal for low temperature carbonization. Similar correlations have been established between the content of extraction bitumen (raw montan wax) and the remission. Petrological investigations show that the quality of the coal bitumen is a function of the type of deposit and of the lithotype.

Particle size distribution (PSD) is an essential parameter in assessing the overall efficiency of blasting operations in mines and the subsequent mine-to-mill process in the mining industry. Despite some drawbacks of 2D image analysis techniques in accurately estimating particle sizes in PSD, the mining industry has relied on them for the last three decades. This study proposes the 3D rock fragmentation measurement (3DFM) technique for deducting the accurate dimensions of 3D rock particles for the PSD. 3DFM has utilized different processing algorithms. Images of different views of the non-touching rock particles of varying sizes have been acquired as a data acquisition step of structure from motion technology for generating sparse point cloud. Dense point cloud reconstruction is used to avail finer details of the point cloud using clustering views for the multi-view stereo algorithm. Random sample consensus (RANSAC) algorithm coupled with an unsupervised classification using the density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) classifier is employed to extract the rock clusters from the 3D point cloud. Finally, the accurate rock sizes are derived using the hybrid bounding box rotation identification (HYBBRID) algorithm with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.10 cm for length, 0.10 cm for breadth, and 0.32 cm for depth. The PSD of rock fragments obtained from the proposed 3DFM technique is found to be matching with the results of mechanical sieving and manual gauging with an R2 values of 0.98 and 0.99, respectively. The 3DFM method can be considered cheaper, more accurate, and computationally faster in determining the rock dimensions for the PSD determination method to enhance the productivity of the mining industry.

In 2001, at the CIM AGM in Quebec, a paper discussing poor ground conditions in a newly opened area at Agrium?s Vanscoy Potash Operation?s, suggested load transfer around old workings as a possible reason for the early room failure. High closure rates are expected in deeper regions however the rapid failure of walls immediately behind the face resulted in protective guards being mounted on and behind the borer. The high closure and early rib failure continued well past any reasonable distance to be explained by load transfer around old workings and investigations continued into possible reasons other than simply depth. Detailed investigations into the mineralogy and crystal fabric of the ore zone provided one possibility, which combined with a changed borer cutting profile are now believed to have contributed greatly to the poor conditions.

INTRODUCTION AND SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES An area in the midwest overlying abandoned room-and-pillar mine workings at, shallow depth has been experiencing subsidence movements with associated damage to surface structures. Other coal companies in the area have also been having similar experience. A 16 - month cooperative study between a mining company and the Department of Mining Engineering at SIUC was developed with the following objectives. 1) Determine the extent to which surface and subsurface movements were complete in the area, 2) Identify the mechanism(s) of subsidence in the area, 3) Determine the influence of geology and hydrology of the area on subsidence movements, 4) Observe the conditions of abandoned underground workings with a borehole TV camera, 5) Characterize the extent of damage and monitor possible progressive damage to selected surface structures, and 6) Make recommendations to a) minimize further damage to surface structures in the area, b) identify future areas that may be affected by these movements and c) modify mining systems to minimize these movements.

The research objective was to determine the effect of aluminum alloy additions on the oxidation behavior of cobalt-nickel alloys. Thirty high-purity alloys were reacted with 02 at 0.5 atm at 1,351°, 1,389°, and 1,429° K in a volumetric apparatus for about 300 min. The alloy compositions consisted of Co-Ni master alloys (0, 22, 50, 70, 91, and 100 wt pct Ni) with aluminum additions of about 0, 1, 2, 4, and 8 wt pet. Large early deviations from, or changes in, the parabolic rate constant were encountered, but in most cases, the reaction rate declined approximately in accordance with the parabolic rate law. A sharp peak in the parabolic oxidation rate constant was observed for specimens containing a to 22 percent nickel and 1 to 2 percent aluminum at 1,351° K, and the rate constants for these compositions were lower at the higher temperatures. Specimens containing 8 percent aluminum reacted far more slowly than did any of the others.

A series of flotation experiments were carried out in a 2.25-dm3 laboratory-scale Rushton turbine cell using hydrophobic quartz particles. Flotation was performed at a constant mean bubble diameter over a range of superficial gas velocities and impeller rotational speeds. The overall flotation rate constant increased linearly with increasing superficial gas velocity (and hence bubble surface area flux). The rate constant also increased linearly with increasing energy dissipation, until a maximum value was reached. A further increase in energy dissipation had little effect on the rate constant. The dependency of the rate constant on energy dissipation is a reflection of the size range and hydrophobicity of the particles used in this study. The flotation rate constant increased with increasing particle size, except at the highest energy dissipation value examined, for which the flotation rate of the larger particles reached a plateau and, in some cases, decreased. Good agreement was obtained between the experimental results and those predicted by a fundamental flotation model using experimentally measured values for mean energy dissipation and the Sauter mean bubble diameter. The bubble velocity was adjusted to obtain the best fit to the experimental data. The inferred bubble velocity, based on the flotation model, was found to increase with increasing superficial gas velocity (and bubble surface area flux) and was found to decrease with increasing impeller rotational speed. While the inferred bubble velocities were significantly lower than experimentally measured bubble velocities, and, except at low superficial gas velocity values, significantly higher than the bubble swarm velocity calculated from gas holdup measurements, similar trends with impeller rotational speed and superficial gas velocity were observed in all cases.

Water use and wastewater management is becoming a focus for many industries around Australia and the rest of the world. Good quality water is increasingly being recognised as a precious resource, and regulations on the bulk storage and discharge of waste streams is becoming more stringent in order to protect the environment, existing water reserves and the communities that use these resources. Components such as heavy metals, arsenic, cyanide, and sulfate from acid mine drainage are some that occur at mining and metallurgical processing sites. Removal of such components can allow safe re-use of these streams, reducing the new water requirements of the process, or else allowing acceptable discharge to the environment. Re-use or discharge of treated water eliminates or reduces the risk associated with storage of large volumes of contaminated water on site.Technologies where a contaminant is selectively precipitated and removed as a sludge are used for many of these treatments. Selection of the best treatment option for wastewater must depend on what is suitable to each site, and consider not only the nature of the contaminant, but also other aspects, including the location and situation of the site, local regulations, cost of reagents, the sensitivity of the local environment and waste sludge disposal options. To outline how an effective and economical solution can be designed and delivered, this paper will present a case study for the removal of arsenic from a site wastewater, from assessment of the problem, selection of suitable technology, design and implementation, to the benefits delivered to the site.CITATION:Salokannel, A, Nevatalo, L M, Martikainen, M, van der Meer, T and McCulloch, J, 2013. Many excavation and loading tasks require equipment operators to simultaneously coordinate the motion of multiple machine links, in order to achieve complex tool trajectories. Efficiency, ore selectivity, and machine wear, are all affected by the skill level and attentiveness of the operator. A software-based kinematics reconfiguration system designed to assist operators with various tasks has been implemented on a small experimental excavator using our new differential control architecture. Kinematics transformation and feedback control algorithms are being developed and tested using computer simulation, and the results implemented on the experimental excavator. Several task-specific kinematics transformations, including a virtual revolute-to-Cartesian machine reconfiguration and computer-assisted bucket steering and stabilization have been successfully tested. Progress, challenges, results, expected benefits, and planned work are described.

This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

A method is derived for obtaining the distribution of sphere diameters and plate thicknesses (or pearlite spacings) from size distribution functions obtained along randomly oriented lines. The method described offers several advantages over existing methods. IT is often of interest to measure not only the average particle size but also the distribution in sizes of particles dispersed in an opaque material, such as an alloy. Com o objetivo de avaliar as condições estruturais via comportamento mecânico associada ao efeito TRIP realizou-se estudo comparativo das propriedades mecânicas de dois aços inoxidáveis austeníticos comerciais de graus 304L e 201LN. A martensita induzida por deformação foi formada durante a laminação a frio a temperatura ambiente até percentual de redução de espessura de 80% e avaliada via nanoindentação com cargas máximas de ensaio de 1, 20, 50 e 100 gf. Observou-se que as propriedades decresceram com o aumento das cargas utilizadas e apresentaram tendência de estabilização com as maiores cargas.

Horizontal rotating mills are being used all over the world associated with different mineral and power generation industries. David Brown South Africa, with over 140 years of experience in gear manufacture and design, has been supplying these industries with innovative designs at exceptional quality. The gearing systems associated with these industries are challenged daily with operating conditions with are not always fully understood. Failures are therefore experienced, over time in the industry, which can therefore not always be fully explained. David Brown South Africa has developed a gear monitoring system, the Intelligent Gearing System, in association with Transmission Dynamics (UK), in order to monitor and analyze these operating conditions in real time. The system has been designed on the principles of Six Sigma, incorporating Design for Six Sigma. The purpose with this system design is to monitor the operating conditions on the pinion, record the information and analyze the data in relation to the rate of fatigue damage to the girth gear and pinion. This is done in real time and unattended. The output from the Intelligent Gearing System can be fed back into the operating system of the mill user, in order to display an alarm for operating conditions exceeding the design criteria as well as information on the rate of fatigue damage due to these operating conditions. When the mill operating conditions are better understood, and the effect on the fatigue life of the mill gearing components, mill users can forecast critical spare holding levels with an increased accuracy. The Intelligent Gearing System also allows early actions to remove reasons for system overloads.

Since the dawn of cyanidation leaching techniques for precious metals, certain manganese-bearing silver ores have been a problem due to low silver extraction. Since simultaneous occurrence of silver and manganese is common in nature, this situation has made many otherwise attractive silver deposits uneconomic in the past. Several older techniques have been useful but at $1.29 per ounce of silver, the economics were unfavorable. With the new look in silver prices and some improvements in processing technology, neglected silver districts offer new promise.

Two of the most important issues mines have to deal with are tracking the ore mined from pit to plant and to test the efficiency of beneficiation equipment. Kumba Resources and Saco Systems are working together at moment to develop a RFID tracer system to help address these issues. This paper will focus on the tracking of ore from pit to plant. The main advantages for ore tracking is to ensure plant feed blending and dilution according to plan. The RFID tracer system works on the basis of a tracer that physically simulates the ore properties and radio frequency technology that facilitates communication with the tracer and allowing information to be stored on the tracer. This paper tends to indicate the progress on the application of RFID tracer technology in the minerals processing environment as tested at Kumba Resources so far. It is concluded that the system has great potential, but some important problems remain

Several laboratory flotation tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a sample of unweathered diorite from the B. F. Camden property, Amherst County, Va. Results showed that an ilmenite concentrate analyzing 45.5 percent Ti02 (titania), 0.07 percent P205 (phosphorus pentoxide), and 2.21 percent Si02 (silicon dioxide) could be produced from a feed containing 7.72 percent Ti02 and 3.94 percent P205. Ti02 recovery in the concentrate was 47.6 percent in a batch test. The weathered saprolite material overlying the diorite required scrubbing and desliming to remove argillaceous material and preliminary flotation of apatite followed by flotation of ilmenite. The resulting concentrate analyzed 47.3 percent Ti02, 0.19 percent P205, and 0.99 percent Si02 from a starting feed of 8.99 percent Ti02 and 3.37 percent P205; TiO2 recovery was 54.5 percent.

"It has long been recognized that the properties of polycrystalline substances are not the same as those of single crystals. These differences are especially marked in metels and metallic minerals, and are of greatest practical importance in metal working and ore treatment. The property changes encountered in passing from a metal single crystal to a poly-crystalline aggregate are the same as are produced by cold-working a metal or by the precipitation of a disperse phase. Hence, we may logically assume that the property changes are all due directly or indirectly to the formation of interfacial area or internal surface. Our problem, then, is to ascertain the physicochemical state of the metal atoms at such internal surface and show how this physicochemical condition accounts for the pronounced changes of mechanical, magnetic, and electrical properties that accompany increased internal surface.GENERAL CONCEPT OF INTERNAL SURFACEIn 1678, Huyghens attempted to explain the double refraction of calcite by postulating that crystals were built from a regular arrangement of ellipsoidal particles. Over 100 years later, Abbé Hauy concluded from his studies of cleavage that crystals might be built from small units, but the units were of the same shape as the entire crystal. This idea, which was prevalent in mineralogical thought before the advent of X-ray spectrometry, was discarded when the great success of Bragg made it appear that the chemical atoms were in reality the elements of structure. In the further development of X-ray technique, however, C. G. Darwin, in England, and P. P. Ewald, in Germany, found it necessary to postulate crystal units con¬taining many atoms. The latter gave the name of mosaic crystals to those so constituted. The individual units are supposed to Possess the ideal atomic arrangements revealed by the X-ray but are not oriented with respect to one another."

The International Tunnel and Underground Space Association (ITA) has a number of working groups (WG) that meet at least once a year. One of these is WG12, ?Use of Shotcrete?, of which the author is a member. The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to a number of topics that were discussed at the WG12 meetings held in April and September 2008; and also to a number of other matters that arose from the presentation of thirty-four papers at the 5th International Symposium on Sprayed Concrete held in Lillehammer, Norway between 21 and 24 April 2008.
