At the Sinclair Study Site it was found that the deeper the soil the greater the yield of corn, soybeans, wheat, alfalfa, and timothy. Yields at this location were generally lower than those at the Alston Surface Mine. At Alston the non-prime land treatments generally produced greater yields for all crops than did the prime farmland treatments, however, the intermediate soil thickness, 20 cm topsoil over 40 cm of subsoil, gave the best yields, provided it's subsoil had been limed. From a chemical point of view, acidic spoils do not need to be buried by 120 cm or 4 feet of soil, provided adequate lime is applied to these spoils as a barrier prior to placement of good quality topsoil and only forage crops are to be grown. The burial depth must be increased to as much as 75 cm when grain crops such as corn or soybeans are to be grown. This response to burial depth appears to be related to water storage needed by the crop and not due to toxic effects of the spoils. A conventional farm tractor-mounted subsoiler increased yields of soybeans and corn the first one or two years, but the effect was diminished with time. Subsoiling did not produce significant increases for alfalfa or wheat. However, ripping with a bulldozer produced significant yield responses, especially for corn and soybeans, that have lasted for at least three years. The ripping effectively reduced the bulk density at least within the zones through which the ripper had passed. Liming the upper 20 cm of subsoil significantly increased yields of alfalfa, corn, and soybeans. There also appeared to be an interaction between this lime treatment and soil depth. Yields of some grain and forage crops may be high enough to meet target levels for bond release for prime farmland. Based on the present study, one should not expect corn yields to be high enough to meet bond release. This statement should not be considered final since the experiment is not complete.

El presente trabajo describe el proceso de optimización metalúrgica de la planta concentradora “La Inmaculada” de la U.P. “El Cofre en Puno, dado que la mina no contaba con reserva suficiente para abastecer a la planta concentradora. Para ello, se ha dejado de realizar el blending de los minerales oxidados, mixtos y sulfurados y ahora se efectúan los tratamientos metalúrgicos en forma independiente para cada tipo de mineral (sulfurado, mixto y oxidado). Así también, se mejoró la calidad del producto final de molienda del orden y se ha modificado el reporte del balance metalúrgico diario de la planta concentradora, efectuando los balances por cada turno de operación, con indicación de controles de molienda, suma de recuperaciones y recuperación económica; representando este último es un índice indispensable y primordial que nos indica la eficiencia final económica con el que estamos operando.

A theory is presented for the static penetration of a single rigid wedge into brittle material. The material considered is one which exhibits both crushing and chipping phases in the penetration process. If the wedge angle and three parameters are specified, the theory predicts forces and associated penetrations during both the crushing and chipping phases. For certain ranges of the parameters agreement with the limited experimental data available is promising, except for the initial phase of the penetration process where refinements on the proposed theory are required. The theory also predicts that for certain values of the wedge angle and other known parameters, the chipping process does not occur and penetration is due entirely to crushing. When viewed in detail, the drilling of rock by percussive means involves, among other things, system dynamics, actuating forces, dynamic stress levels and the actual penetration mechanism of the bit into rock. If rock drills are to be significantly improved, a thorough understanding of the entire system would be highly desirable. In this paper, one aspect of the system, namely the mechanism of penetration of the bit, will be studied in detail. It has been found1 that for the velocities encountered in percussive drilling (of the order of 20 fps) a static analysis adequately describes the penetration process, at least for some rocks. Hence, we will only be concerned with describing analytically the static penetration of a single wedge shaped tool. It will further be assumed that the wedge is long enough to permit a two-dimensional analysis. Numerous authors have studied the static penetration of a wedge into rock. The following papers give some of this work and provide additional references to other work. Cheatham2,3 has assumed the rock to behave plastically and has obtained force-penetration equations for both Coulomb-Mohr and parabolic yield criteria. Evans and Murrell4 have studied the penetration of two types of coal and have found equations relating the penetration characteristic (P/dSc) to wedge angle for the various strength coals tested. race' attempted to find a correlation between hardness as determined by indenting the material and other mechanical properties and concluded that the results of such a test are generally inconclusive. His paper however contains a very extensive bibliography on the indenting of many different materials. Gnirk6 also has a fairly complete literature review on the static penetration of rock, of which he makes use in his indexing studies. A wide range of behavior is found in the wedge penetration of different rocks under different external conditions. For example, a rock that is essentially elastic-brittle at standard pressure may become elastic-plastic at a high confining pressure.7 It has also been observed4. " that some rocks will merely be crushed and indented by a wedge, whereas others will crack and form chips, furthermore the existence or non-existence of chips depends in great measure on the geometry of the indentor, type of rock and the depth of penetration. Hence, to attempt a theory which embraces all possible behavior is not practical at present. We, therefore, confine our attention to predicting the force-penetration characteristic and volume removal behavior for a type of rock which exhibits both crushing and chipping phases in the penetration process. Such behavior is characteristic of the harder rocks such as granites and represents a more difficult problem than the behavior of softer rocks such as coal and certain sandstones. In this preliminary study an attempt will be made to describe only the essential features of this complex penetration process. A qualitative description of these essential features is obtained with the aid of Fig. 1.1, where a wedge of vertex angle 28 is shown at some intermediate stage of the penetration process. As the wedge advances, the rock is fragmented (i.e. crushed) in some local region surrounding the wedge, the shape of this region being unknown. Simultaneous with the fragmentation in this local region, essentially elastic stresses are assumed to be building up in the surrounding rock. When a certain penetration level, di+1, is reached, the stresses along some surface are sufficient to cause failure and a chip is thus formed. The process now repeats, i.e., a crushing phase followed by the formation of a chip.

"The current sampling systems of ore flows or concentrates are based on the method of cross sections in point sampling and the method of scooping in reducing. The limited number of point samples in sampling and microsamples in reducing lead to big random and probable systematic errors. The paper defines the principles of sampling, which assure the absence of systematic errors and also provides calculation formulas of probable errors in sampling methods of cross and longitudinal sections as well as in samples preparation. The article sets the fundamental laws of sampling: the dependency of minimal mass of gross sample and number of point samples from mass of point sample in sampling from heterogeneous body; the dependency of a sample minimal mass from lumps’ size in preparation of carefully mixed samples; the dependency of point samples’ dispersion from duration of control period. The paper introduces the fundamental notions: lump variance; probable systematic error; methodical error. It also provides a solution of outstanding sample correct application in analysis results calculations. In application of automatic analyzers, mounted in material flows, the probable error connected with sampling, is calculated by the formulas for carefully mixed sampling bodies. The paper describes the developed and introduced sampling systems on the base of combined application of cross and longitudinal sections methods in sampling and preparation of samples. The advantages of this equipment are compactness, reliability, simplicity in service and operation, and for pulps it is adaptability in pipelines. Application of the developed equipment entirely excludes probable systematic error. The new systems of sampling and preparation of samples are introduced at 25 concentrating plants. Introduction of the developed systems at sampling balance points of concentrating plants allowed double reducing balance deficiency."

El presente trabajo señala el éxito de la mineralurgia latinoamericana en el aumento de producción durante la década del 60 a través de una estudio estadístico donde se muestra una alza productiva en un 88% de su valor y 60% de su producción física. Empero, este eventual progreso no coincidió con las exportaciones que se desarrollaron en el período señalado puesto que hubo un mayor consumo de minerales por las industrias nacionales y se eliminaron algunos productos latinoamericanos en los mercados internaciones, alcanzando solo un 20%. En esta perspectiva, es necesario que el desarrollo de la producción se mantenga al ritmo del consumo y la demanda en mercados internacionales ya que América Latina no dispone de sufiente capital como para financiar su desarrollo en niveles programados al tiempo y necesita un financiamiento exterior. Asimismo la década del 70 se convierte en un espacio de desafío puesto que Latinoamérica debe preservar los intereses nacionales, así como la atracción de capitales extranjeros en condiciones aceptables.

O presente trabalho possibilita o entendimento e a análise dos processos de conformação a quente dos metais. Isto, pela validação experimental do modelo de Johnson-Cook, para descrever o comportamento dos materiais no regime plástico, para grandes deformações, às altas taxas de deformações e nas altas temperaturas. Um entendimento dos parâmetros do modelo, utilizando-se um método analítico numérico simples, rápido e confiável foi desenvolvido anteriormente pela linha de pesquisa em Conformação Plástica dos Metais na UNESP – Campus de Ilha Solteira, obtendo-se as constantes empíricas do modelo referido. É proposto nesse trabalho a validação experimental do método simplificado para determinação dos parâmetros empíricos do modelo de Johnson-Cook através de um ensaio de tração a quente, considerando as propriedades mecânicas dos materiais analisados experimentalmente e/ou de dados de materiais disponíveis na literatura. De maneira geral, os resultados experimentais foram satisfatórios para o aço AISI 1045 à temperatura de 500 ºC, ensaiado à taxa de deformação de 1000 s-1, quando comparados aos resultados teóricos previstos pelo modelo proposto por SCADUTO e MENEZES. Particularmente, foi possível evidenciar erros máximos de 1,33% para o parâmetro n, 13,15% para o parâmetro B, 295,00% para o parâmetro C e 4,14% para o parâmetro m.

Underground tests of slusher cables at first might seem to be quite simple and inexpensive. They do, however, take a long time and give results that may be ambiguous and unreliable. Also, because underground test conditions are not exactly duplicable, tests carried out at different times or in different mines could not be compared. An attempt was made to develop a laboratory test method that would provide for all factors affecting slusher cable performance underground in such a way as to make it possible to achieve comparable results from different series of tests by exactly duplicating test conditions. Such a method should also make it possible to vary individual factors systematically in order to give a proper assessment of the effect of changing conditions on cable performance. A set of tests, comparing the same two types of cable both underground and in the laboratory, is described. The Bureau of Mines (BOM) evaluated the technology, capital investment, and annual operating costs of emission control for further reductions of lead in ambient air at the East Helena, Montana, smelter, and the Glover, Herculaneum, and Buick smelter-refineries in Missouri. This study seeks to analyze the technology available to the domestic primary lead industry for attempting to further reduce lead emissions below 1985 levels. Through enclosure of concentrate unloading and handling areas and all lead-processing buildings, followed by venting these enclosures to the atmosphere through baghouses and the application of appropriate local controls, emissions can theoretically be reduced by a total of 2,424 pounds of lead per day from 1985 levels at the three Missouri operations. Using conventional technology, aggregated additional capital costs of $250,014,000 and annual operating costs of $18,507,800 are estimated for the four operations, resulting in a total cost of $0.063 per pound of refined lead. Continuous drossing techniques would assist in meeting OSHA standards in process areas. Continuous drossing would change capital and operating costs to $258,344,800 and $16,104,700, respectively, for a total cost of $0.062 per pound of refined lead. First quarter, 1986 open market price for refined lead was $0.184 per pound.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting investigations to improve design methods for mining volcano-genic massive-sulfide (VMS) type deposits in environmentally sensitive regions. This study was conducted at the Greens Creek Mine, which is typical of many VMS-type deposits throughout southeast Alaska, and served as a case history for computer modeling and structural analysis. Results indicated that the finite-element design method provided reasonable comparisons with both the anticipated regional stress regime and the measured deformational response of the underground accessways. Investigators concluded that reasonable accuracy can be expected for stability analyses of proposed mine design scenarios at this mine using the results of this preliminary study.

"In this paper, scheelite and scheelite coated with Pb2+ (SC) were synthesized by chemical precipitation with the help of ultrasonic. The role of the Pb2+ on scheelite was evaluated. Additionally, the dissolution behavior of minerals and the adsorption mechanism of collectors were investigated systematically via SEM, XRD, EDS. The results indicate that the ultrasonic cavitation can promote the formation of scheelite with large particle size and high crystallinity. Due to the exchange of WO4 2- and OH-, the dissolution of scheelite are not in a 1:1 equivalent amount by chemical formula and the concentration of WO4 2- is higher than that of Ca2+ in the solution because Pb2+ promotes the transfer of WO4 2- from scheelite surface into the solution. The dissolution of scheelite is an endothermic reaction and its enthalpy reaches the maximum value of 692.59J·mol-1 at pH=8~10. But the coating of Pb2+ changes the thermal effect of scheelite in the solution and the dissolution of SC is an exothermic reaction with the dissolution enthalpy of -262.30 J·mol-1. At pH=8~10, the adsorption capacity of sodium oleate and salicylhydroxamic acid on the surface of SC is higher than that of scheelite which delivers that Pb2+ contributes to the scheelite surface dissolution and enhances the adsorption of collectors on the mineral surface, thus achieving activation.INTRODUCTIONIn modern society, tungsten is a type of quite important rare metal and also a strategic resource. Because of its low vapor pressure, high melting point, good electrical and thermal conductivity properties, it is widely applied in high-temperature technology, lighting, machine and engine construction (Zhao,Z.W, 2013; Yan, W, 2017; Ilhan, S, 2013). Both scheelite and wolframite are the major tungsten deposits. With the depletion of easily-processed wolframite, scheelite has drawn a great deal of scientific and industrial attention. Scheelite can be recovered by flotation due to the metathesis of polarity and chargeability on minerals surface via adding regulators and collectors."

The recent development of rare earth permanent magnets has revolutionised the field of magnetic separation. The advent of rare earth permanent magnets in the 1980s provided a magnetic energy product an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional ferrite magnets. This has allowed the design of high-intensity magnetic circuits operating energy free and surpassing the strength and effectiveness of electromagnets. New applications and design concepts focusing on the mineral and metal processing industries have evolved. This technology also led to the development of various magnetic separators specifically designed for mineral processing applications. Applications which were not previously considered are now being applied to primary mineral upgrading and recycling and secondary recovery.

In a first stage of our investigations material properties of fly ash (three acidic and one alkaline type originating from combustion of various age coal) obtained from four various dumps have been characterized. In a next step systematic mechanical activation experiments??grinding??and measurements have been performed with various ashes to establish relations between grinding fineness (specific surface area), specific work input demand of grinding and activity. In a third phase utilization of a mixture of mechanically activated fly ash and lime for producing an independent binding composition has been assessed involving determination of interrelationship(s) between the degree of activation of fly ash, the lime concentration and the resultant strength of the obtained concrete. Finally, pilot size experiments were conducted and a test road section was built to explore possibilities for the production of suitable binding composition from the mixture of fly ash and lime as well as the applicability such mixture for road construction. After summarizing major achievements of the first and second stages of the work (history) the present study deals with the research conducted in stages three and four. Experimental results support the conclusion that the obtained binding material is suitable for construction of road bedding.

DITHIOPHOSPHATES and xanthates are the principal collectors for sulphide minerals, and consequently any knowledge of mineral-collector systems of this type is of value. In the present investigation an attempt was made to obtain information on the interaction of a typical dithiophosphate with galena. In carrying out this study, radioiso-topes, so much discussed in the past few years,', ' were extensively employed. By using radioactive dithiophosphate synthesized from radioactive phosphorus, a rapid and sensitive analytical procedure G. L. This permitted determination of such important quantities as the rate of uptake of dithiophosphate by the mineral, the amount existing at equilibrium on the mineral surface and in the solution, and the desorption of the agent from the surface. Such measurements were possible even on single crystals of galena. In addition the exchange of dithiophosphate between the solution and the sorbed phase was examined, a matter which could be accomplished only by the use of isotopes. It is desired to point out at this time that throughout this paper the term "sorption" has been employed to designate the uptake of agent by mineral, without implication as to the nature of the process by which the uptake was accomplished. Experimental Materials: Galena: The galena was from the Tri-State district. For studies on ground mineral four preparations were used during the course of the investigation. These were prepared from selected large crystals by wet grinding in order to reduce surface oxidation. Alcohol was chosen as a convenient medium for this purpose. The ground mineral was then fractionated by sedimentation in alcohol, dried by evacuation, and stored in a nitrogen-filled desiccator. Data on the preparations are tabulated in table I. The size analysis indicated that the areas of the preparations were of comparable magnitude, even though the absolute values may be somewhat incorrect. Dithiophosphates: Nonradioactive dithiophbsphate (di-isopropyl or di-secondary butyl) was obtained by purification of a commercial product. An aqueous acid solution of the agent was extracted with petroleum ether, the ether layer dried, and the dithiophosphate precipitated as ammonium salt with anhydrous ammonia. Several repetitions of this process resulted in a nearly colorless, flaky product of good purity. (General formula (RO,)PSSNH,). Radioactive dithiophosphate was synthesized by heating radioactive elementary red phosphorus* • For early experiments (1943 to 1944), the elementary red phosphorus was obtained from the cyclotron group at the Crocker Radiation Laboratory of the University of California. Berkeley, through the courtesy of Dr. Joseph W. Hamilton. For more recent work (1946 to 1949). the elementary radioactive Phosphorus has been supplied by the Oak Ridge National Labarotories on allocation from the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. with sulphur at 270" to 300°C to produce radioactive P,S,. The latter was then treated with the desired purified alcohol (isopropyl or secondary butyl) at 60" to 80°C to form the dithiophosphoric acid derivative. Purification was effected in the same manner as for the nonradioactive material. The effectiveness of the purification method was established by the isotopic dilution method." The same technique was used to show that only negligible decomposition of neutral or of carbonate solutions of the dithiophosphate took place over a period of a day; this was true whether or not galena was suspended in the solutions. Procedures: Radioactivity: The activity of a solution was obtained by counting with a small glass-jacketed, silvered Geiger counter, using a conventional scaling circuit.' A minitest of the new potassium chloride-potassium carbonate two-stage in situ uranium leach process has been carried out at the Intercontinental Energy Corporation (IEC) Zamzow project site in South Texas. Substantial quantities of high concentration uranium were produced indicating the viability of the leach solution. The test results yield information regarding the reservoir dispersivity, the average cation-exchange capacity of the formation, and the distribution coefficients describing carion-exchange reactions. The test a1 so indicates permeability anisotropy and the existence of disturbed flow fields. The research was partially funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.

A carga metálica do Forno Elétrico a Arco (FEA) representa bem mais que a matéria prima da rota semi integrada, representa o ponto de equilíbrio financeiro de uma operação siderúrgica sustentável. O fiel da balança econômica de uma operação baseada em um FEA baseia-se no custo do emprego metálico. Deste modo é razoável pensar que, escolher a combinação de sucatas que irá compor o mix de metálicos que abastecerá o FEA é uma tarefa que vai além das limitações técnicas do fenômeno de fusão e refino primário no referido reator. O emprego de resíduos metálicos diversos representa uma medida de sustentabilidade para a indústria siderúrgica, tanto sob a ótica ambiental, dado o reaproveitamento do resíduo, como na perspectiva econômica, haja vista a redução substancial nos custos de transformação. Testes realizados no FEA da CSN UPV possibilitaram avaliar os aspectos positivos e negativos do emprego de um resíduo metálico descartado durante a produção de cimentos. Os resultados encontrados demostram que, sob a perspectiva técnica, os aspectos positivos sobressaem aos negativos e, portanto, O FEA representa uma ótima alternativa para o consumo sustentável do referido resíduo. Uma avaliação econômica aponta uma redução de custo do emprego metálico da ordem de 17%.

In the last fifteen years, several research studies have evaluated the ability to detect various types of deep foundation concrete integrity flaws with crosshole sonic logging (CSL) and thermal integrity profiling (TIP). This paper synthesizes the findings from the research, focusing on two studies that included CSL and TIP testing of drilled shafts with various types of flaws. The first, a 2016 research study of test shafts for the Wisconsin DOT, included inclusions inside and outside the reinforcing cage, intentional tremie withdrawal during concreting, and soft bottom flaws. The second, a 2021 study of production shafts for the Missouri DOT, included one shaft with and another without soft bottom conditions. After synthesizing the ability of each test method to detect each type of flaw, the paper presents recommendations for improving how CSL and TIP results are evaluated in practice. The recommendations highlight DFI‟s CSL interpretation protocol as well as the importance of evaluating TIP data versus time, not just depth. The paper includes example temperature-versus-time plots for various types of flaws and emphasizes how temperature-versus-time evaluation can be used to distinguish soft bottom conditions from standard bottom-of-shaft temperature roll off.
