"In producing multilayer films for magnetic data storage applications, the interfacial roughness must be controlled in order to obtain high quality materials with reproducible properties. The present understanding of the effect of roughness on multilayer properties such as magnetoresistance is sketchy, particularly for electrodeposited films. In this study, quantitative atomic force microscopy was used to characterize surface morphology before and after Ni films of varying thickness were deposited on Cu cathodes. A multinuclear multilayer growth mechanism is supported by both the deposition conditions and the AFM images, and a multinuclear multilayer model gave a satisfactory fit to measurements of the density of peaks on ultrathin Ni films between 0 and 8 nm thick.Alloys consisting of alternating ferro-and paramagnetic layers have begun to replace Permalloy in the sensing elements of magnetic hard drives. The operating principle of the new read heads is giant magnetoresistance (GMR), and they are smaller and more sensitive than previous inductive heads (1). Experimental studies on sputtered multilayers have emphasized the role of layer thickness and interlayer roughness in determining the presence and size of the GMR effect (e.g., 2,3,4,5,6). However, roughness in electrodeposited multilayers has rarely been measured, even though read heads are likely to continue to be made by this process for some time to come. Cu/Ni can be considered a model system for understanding processing-microstructure-property relationships in electrodeposited multilayers and is the most widely investigated of all such systems (e.g., 7,8,9,10,11,12). Nevertheless, the roughness of the interfaces in Cu/Ni electrodeposits has not been systematically characterized by quantitative techniques, and in all studies reported so far, the total deposit thicknesses were considerably greater than the 10 nm needed for most sensor applications (1). QUEBEC CARTIER MINING COMPANY was incorporated in 1957 to explore and develop low grade iron are deposits in Northeastern Quebec. Four separate deposits were located and identified as being of ore quality and size to support commercial development. Said deposits were located at Lac Jeannine, Mount-Wright, Fire Lake and Mount-Reed. In 1970, in preparation for the replacement of the depleting Lac Jeannine are reserves, construction of an SS-mile railway extension was initiated, towards the newly selected mine site at Mount-Wright. This orebody was selected because the physical and chemical characteristics of the ore were very much similar to those of Lac Jeannine, as well as its huge reserves, estimated at more than one billion tons. In addition to the railroad extension, a mine, concentrator and related facilities were constructed and the new town of Fermont was created. Total investment for the Mount-Wright project exceeded $700 million and initial production commenced in 1976. Quebec Cartier is presently (1992) the leading producer and seller of iron ore in North America at 15,5 million tons and employs some 2,300 people.

Although it is obvious that in any flotation process we must have a froth, in recent years the development of collecting reagents has caused the possibilities of better frothing agents to be overlooked. Some investigators have even gone so far as to say that the number of satisfactory frothing agents was sufficient. A little consideration will show, however, that the reagents available in the past were far from ideal frothers. The properties of an ideal frother for flotation work may be set down as follows: 1. It must form in low concentrations a copious but not too persistent froth. 2. It must be insensitive to hydrogen-ion concentration of the pulp; that is, it must froth equally well in an acid or alkaline medium. 3. It must be insensitive to salts, even in high concentration. 4. It must be absolutely noncollecting to both sulfides and nonsulfides. 5. Its frothing properties must not be affected by collecting reagents, including soap, the most generally used nonsulfide collector. 6. It must readily emulsify and disperse any insoluble collecting agent that is likely to be used. Clearly the existing frothers do not qualify. Pine oil, for example, is an acceptable frother for many purposes but if used in soap flotation a delicate balance between pine oil and soap must be struck because, as pointed out by Coghill1, these two reagents are incompatible in certain concentrations. The objections to soap itself as a frother are obvious, and the cresols and their substitution products all have some collecting power and very little emulsifying power. The mechanism of frothing in flotation was early explained on the basis of the Harkins-Langmuir theory of oriented molecules.2 These investigators showed that if an organic compound having an unsym-metrical molecule (in which one end of the molecule contained water-

The Bureau of Mines prepared submicron tungsten powder by reducing tungsten hexachloride with hydrogen. The particle diameters of the resulting tungsten powders ranged from 0.015 to 0.046 micron. Within the limits of the variables investigated, no clear-cut correlation was found between process conditions and final size of the powder. Oxygen was the major contaminant in the product; being present both as an adsorbed gas and as suboxides of tungsten. Studies showed that the powder yielded compacts of approximately 45 per-cent of theoretical density when compacted mechanically. Low-temperature sintering produced more rapid densification in these compacts than in compacts prepared from conventional powders. Adding up to 20 percent ultrafine powder to conventional tungsten powder caused an increase in density upon compaction with maximum densification occurring at approximately 12 percent ultrafine powder.

IN the testing of materials there exist various methods of recording graphically the behavior of a material subjected to tensile stress. Prob-ably the most common method is to plot the tensile stress So, obtained by dividing the load P by the original area of cross section AO at the start of the test, as a function of the strain ?o, which is obtained by dividing the ?Lo or the change in the gauge length by the original gauge length Lo. A list of the symbols used here is given in Table 1. This method, while it has proved useful in the routine testing and comparison of various materials, does not have a very sound physical basis, as was first pointed out by P. Ludwik1, and consequently does not afford a very deep insight into the true physical behavior of the material under stress. Among the objections to this method may be mentioned: (1) that by dividing the load P at any stage of the test by the original area Ao a fictitious stress is obtained, which does not actually exist; (2) that the strain ?o = ?Lo /Lo is not an exact expression for the true strain for large values of ?Lo in per cent of Lo; (3) that when necking starts the strain varies considerably along the gauge length and the above expression no longer gives the true strain existing at any point on the outside of the bar; and (4) that the axial strain varies over the cross section of the necked portion and ?o does not represent an average of these strains over the cross section. Stresses taken from such a diagram would be only approximate and, if used to compare results of a test on a given material under simple tension with results obtained under combined stresses, certain errors would he thus introduced. In order to overcome some of these objections, various methods have been suggested, both as to the quantities to be measured and as to their graphical representation. "Abstract-Geology contributes essential information toward obtaining high-quality resource/reserve estimates. In this context, geology can be considered under the following overlapping topics: regional geology, detailed (deposit) geology, mineralogy, ore deposit models and continuity, with geological mapping being fundamental to all. Each of these topics is considered here in terms of potential contributions to "improved" mineral inventory estimation. Some of the principal conclusions are:1. Regional geological relations must be consistent with deposit geology. It is common that important geological relations are more clearly evident in various regional locales than in highly altered and/or highly deformed mineralized areas containing mineral deposit.2. Detailed geology provides information for a geometric model of a deposit, a model that serves as a basis for mine planning. It is important to distinguish fact from interpretation in such models. Substantial effort is required to characterize the geometric margins of a deposit and the relation of these margins to the simplistic geometric form that normally emerges as an interpretation.3. Mineralogical studies relate to many aspects of deposit evaluation including abundance of ore and deleterious minerals, spatial distribution of ore and deleterious minerals, grain size characteristics of important minerals, mill design, etc.4. Ore deposit models contribute substantially to confidence in developing a three-dimensional geometric model of a deposit for mine planning. Specifically, they are a basis on which to develop rules for interpolation and extrapolation of ore, and they contribute to recognition of domains, each with its own characteristic continuity and margin character.5. Continuity is dependent on mineralization style and may be controlled structurally and/or chemically. It is important to distinguish geological continuity and value continuity. A wide range of classical geological methods are useful in examining geological continuity; value continuity is best viewed as a statistical characteristic that is quantified by any of several measures of autocorrelation."

Sotiel mine is situated in the Iberian Pyrite Belt in southern Spain, some 40 km north of the port of Huelva. Although mining operations at the site date back to Roman times, the present mine came into production in 1983 and 5.6 million tonnes of ore had been extracted by 1993. The orebody is volcano-sedimentary and consists of fine grained copper, lead and zinc minerals in massive pyrite surrounded by slates and volcanics. Prior laboratory research had resulted in the synthesis of a new collector, belonging to the MercaptoBenzoOxazole (MBO) class that acts selectively towards Cu and Zn minerals after activation with CuS04. The MethylMercaptoBenzoOxazole (MMBO) version of this collector had been used for the laboratory flotation of Cu minerals and sphalerite activated by CuS04. This resulted in identification of the optimal physicochemical conditions for laboratory-cell flotation of the two minerals from samples of complex sulphide ores, and subsequently the reagent has been tested in the Sotiel plant (Spain). The plant has three flotation sections. With conventional re-agents, the first section yields a Cu concentrate grading 21% with a total recovery of 29%, and the second one yields a 40% Pb concentrate with total recovery of 34% and a 47% Zn concentrate with total recovery of 78%. Application of the new synthetic reagent in the copper and zinc circuits produces a more selective process with a decrease in re- agent concentration grade and recovery are increased by 2 and 9 points respectively in the case of Cu and by 1 and 3 points where Zn is concerned. Moreover, the penalty elements in the Cu concentrate are halved.

Revision of the United States mining law is needed chiefly because of the following reasons: 1. The conceptions as to the characteristics of orebodies that were held at the time the statute of 1872 was enacted have since proved to be in many respects erroneous. 2. The operation of the existing law has been found to work unnecessary hardship upon many claimants to mineral land. 3. The existing statute fails in large degree to encourage development of mineral resources. 4. The existing law often produces conflict between placer and lode-claim rights, working unnecessary injustice to placer claimants. 5. The methods of establishing the rights of locators on United States mineral land are defective, and are not uniform throughout the States within which such lands exist. Law of the Apex The objections to the so-called "law of the apex" are so well known as to require no detailed statement. It is sufficient to point out that the apex rule was based upon the notion that ore deposits consisted of well-formed veins included between definite walls, like the slice of ham in a sandwich. The fact is that veins conforming to that simple type are rare. Irregularity is the rule, and the chief metal production of the United States comes from mass? which bear no resemblance to the tabular form of vein. Manifestly the law of the apex fails completely in such cases. Moreover, the tendency is constantly toward the exploitation of ores of lower grade than could formerly be worked, and such deposits exist mainly in the form of large irregular impregnated zones and masses, so that the future development of our mineral resources would be continuously embarrassed by shadowy claims to extra-lateral rights by the locators of so-called apexes.

THE Institute of Metals held a well rounded out symposium on the working of metals, distributed over two sessions. At the first session* four papers were presented, two dealing with the, cold working of metals and alloys and two with the hot working of non-ferrous alloys. The first paper by E. V. Crane, dealt with "Metal Working in Power Presses." Mr. Crane pointed out the empirical nature of engineering data available for use in calculating the probable stresses developed and power requirements, for the shearing, drawing, binding and other forming operations. He described the various operations, methods of determining stresses developed and presented data obtained. In the discussion C. F. Hammond took exception to Mr. Crane's objections to the rather too frequent. annealing operations in drawing of cartridge cases, pointing out that the material was-manufactured to meet specified structure and physical requirements, which could only be met by carefully controlled sequences of working and intermediate annealing operations.

Grain-gvowth data in zone-refined aluminum and in dilute alloys of copper with this aluminum have been obtained. The amounts of copper added were from 4 to 400 at. ppm. It was found that in both the unalloyed aluminum and the alloys grain growth was characterized by a high value of n in the isothermal growth equation 6n = Kt The inadvertent presence of 1 at. ppm Fe in the alloys was found to he more potent in slowing growth than the purposely added copper. Possible rationalizations of these observations and their general relevance to the theoretical use of gvain-grozvth data have been discussed. Grain growth data of Winegard and his co-workers' on zone-refined tin and dilute tin alloys were analyzed with some success2 in terms of approximate theoretical equations for boundary migration.2-4 In view of this success, experiments were carried out in an effort to obtain similar data on zone-refined aluminum and on dilute copper-in-aluminum alloys. The results obtained were anomalous in several respects and could not be used to test theory. A discussion of these anomalies is presented here; they have been attributed to impurity effects and serve to emphasize the sensitivity of grain growth in general—and the particularly high sensitivity in aluminum—to impurities. The resulting difficulties in the theoretical use of grain-growth data are also discussed. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS An aluminum bar was zone-refined and leveled by methods similar to those described previously.' The degree of purity obtained is indicated in Table The data in Table I were determined by mass-spectrographic methods through the courtesy of Mr. Thomas A. Johnson of AIAG Metals, Inc.* Three dilute copper alloys with this aluminum were prepared also by methods described previously.' The alloys contained nominally 4, 40, and 400 at. ppm of Cu, respectively (0.001, 0.01, and 0.1 wt pct). Each material was fabricated by swaging and rolling into a round bar about 1/4 in. in diameter with an annealed penultimate grain size of approximately 0.003 to 0.007 cm. In order to minimize preferred orientation the fabrication was carried out in several steps, each consisting of a reduction of about 40 pct followed by a recrystallization anneal. Annealing temperatures for the grain-growth studies were attained by the use of boiling liquids up to 213°C and molten metal baths at higher temperatures. Temperatures were controlled to within 1°C. Samples for measurements were cylinders about 3/4 in. long and 1/4 in. in diameter cut from the fabricated rods. In the interests of sample economy a single sample was used for the grain-growth measurements at each temperature. This is the fourth and final installment of Leo Reinartz' summation of the steelmaking industry over the first one hundred years. ALTHOUGH basic open-hearth steel has been in the limelight for many years, it has had to share some of its glory with two lesser but nevertheless important rivals, one 50 years old and one a rejuvenated process. Electric steel Electric-steel manufacture began in a humble way in the United States in 1906, when the first heat was tapped from a 3-ton Heroult electric furnace at the Halcomb Steel Co., Syracuse, N. Y. During the intervening years, it has completely eliminated the crucible process. For many years electric melting furnaces were located predominantly in relatively small, nonintegrated plants, making all kinds of high-grade alloy steels. Most of these furnaces, with capacities ranging from 5 to 20 tons, had basic bottoms. During and after World War II, many large basic electric furnaces, some up to 200 tons in capacity, were installed in integrated plants to make commodity steels. There were several reasons for building electric furnaces. Capital investment per annual ton of capacity was low and furnaces could be installed quickly. Since these furnaces used mostly scrap iron in the charge, no extra expensive coke- and blast-furnace capacity had to be added. The perfection of the top-charging design, and the development of large transformers and furnaces, made possible tons per hour as high as from modern 350-ton. open-hearth furnaces. Electric furnaces have high availability and repair costs are low. The process is flexible. Alloy and plain carbon steels of high quality can be made. MECHANIZATION During the last fifteen years, numerous attempts have been made to mechanize the operations of loading ore and placing till. It is to be regretted that, to date, little progress has been made in this direction. The comparative efficiency of manual labour in Spain is the factor largely responsible for the failure to cheapen costs by mechanization. The necessity for careful classification of the ore and the need for keeping all openings small also makes the problem one of difficulty. It may be of interest to describe the various attempts at mechanization that have so far been made. CONVEYORS: (1) When stoping by layout III in San Dionisio, a trial was made of transporting the filling by jigging conveyors. This method proved un-economical, as the wall building and spreading of the till could not keep pace with the delivery, with the result that the machinery was idle a great part of the shift. (2) The transport of ore from the working places to the ore-passes by jigging conveyors and belts was also tried. Although more successful than in the case of the fill, the method could not compete with that of hand tramming, principally due to the high cost of (a) maintenance caused by the abrasiveness of pyrites, and (b) labour constantly employed on re-aligning the conveyors owing to the constant settlement of the floor. In a few cases, where a sill floor was being blocked out in virgin ground, the method showed a saving. SCRAPERS: Frequent attempts at loading by scrapers have been made, but again the only success obtained has been in the blocking-out of sill floors. The principal obstacle to the successful application of scraping, other than on the sill floor, has been that the openings, which have to be small, call for a light scraper outfit, whereas, in practice, a heavy scraper and at least a 25 h.p. winch are necessary for handling satisfactorily the ore, which is heavy and which breaks somewhat blockily.

"The komatnte-associated Fe-Ni-Cu sulphide mineralization at Kanihalda, Western Australia, is generally believed to be magmatic in origin, but a number of postmagmatic processes significantly modified the original distribution, structure, texture, mineralogy and chemistry of the ores. Two important types of mobilized magmatic sulphides are interpillow/interbreccia sulphides and hydrothermal vein-type sulphides. Interpillow and interbreccia sulphides occur interstitial to pillowed or volcaniclastic footwall metabasalts beneath or adjacent to the stratiform contact ore horizons. They are mineralogically and compositionally similar to massive ores (and are similarly depleted in PGE relative to the compositions of bulk samples of mined ores), but normally do not contain the distinctive chalco-phile ferrochromites characteristic of contact ores. They are interpreted as magmatic sulphides that have been mobilized from the overlying or adjacent massive sulphide layer during peak tectono-nietamorphism.Hydrothermal sulphide-quartz + albite veins also occur in the footwall metabasalt and contain unannealed deformation fabrics indicative of emplacement during retrograde metamorphism. The high Ni and Pd contents of these sulphides (7-13% Ni, up to 70 ppm Pd) indicate that the metals have been derived from the spatially associated komatiites and/or contact ores, consistent with the Pd depletion previously inferred for massive ores. Very low Ir contents and high Pd/Ir ratios of the vein-type sulphides confirm an aqueous transportation-deposition mechanism; hydrothermal transfer of PGE results in strong decoupling of Pd from Ir.There appears to be a complete continuum of sulphide mobilization at Kambalda ranging from whole-scale phy sical dislocation (fault offset ores) and selective mobilization (stringer sulphides) through nietamorphie replacement (interpillow/interbrec- cia sulphides) to jiydrothermal dissolution and redeposition (vein-type sulphides)."

Introduction This paper will describe the mining plant and underground operations at Quemont. Details of geology and milling are beyond its scope. Papers on these subjects will be prepared and presented separately. A detailed account of the exploration and development, 1944 to 1947, has been given by W. L. Brown (1). Location The mining concessions of Quemont Mining Corporation, Limited, are in Rouyn township, Rouyn-Noranda county, northwestern Quebec. These concessions total about 640 acres in area. They lie within the limits of the City of Noranda, contiguous to, and directly north of, the Horne mine of Noranda Mines, Limited. A large area in the southern part of the property is covered by the north arm of Osisko lake. Production The present operating rate is about 2,100 tons per day. Three flotation concentrates are produced: copper, containing a large proportion of the gold and silver in the ore; zinc; and pyrite, which carries an appreciable additional proportion of gold. The copper and zinc concentrates are shipped to smelters as produced. The pyrite concentrate is cyanided to recover additional gold, after which it is filtered, dried, and shipped for the manufacture of sulphuric acid. The principal revenue metals are copper, gold, and zinc. Silver and pyrite are important by-products.

The production of oil and gas in Arkansas is confined to two distinct and widely separated regions of the state; namely: (1) South Arkansas in the Gulf coastal plain, where 49 fields-many containing two or more reservoirs or pools-yield oil, condensate and gas from beds in the Cretaceous and Jurassic, and (2) Northwest Arkansas, a part of the Arkansas Valley, where only dry gas is produced in 21 fields from sandstones of Pennsylvanian age. Exploration during the year 1945 centered largely in these two producing regions, but some of the geophysical surveys were made and wildcat drilling was done a considerable distance outside these regions.

"The asbestos orebody is contained within ultrabasic rocks of Precambrian age, being located in the continuous permafrost zone of the Quebec Ungava Peninsula, some 300 miles north of the tree line at approximate latitude 61'49' and longitude 73°58'.The asbestos deposit is at the western tip of a folded ultrabasic sill complex which trends northeast and covers an elliptical area 4.5 miles wide by 15 miles long. Locally. the asbestos occurs in. a completely serpentinized dunite rock. The principal rock types in the vicinity of the ore-body originally consisted of dunite, peridotite and pyroxenite, all of which have experienced at least two periods of alteration, so that no fresh rock now remains.The main ore zone in the open pit is approximately one quarter mile in length, 150 to 200 feet in width, and plunges at 25 to 30 degrees in a northeast direction below surface, to a vertical depth of at least 1,200 feet, Consider¬able tectonic activity resulted in favourable structural conditions which culminated in the formation of the ore zone in its present form.The deposit consists principally of cross-fibre ""gash type"" veins which vary in length from several inches to several feet. The principal fibre vein direction is parallel to the dip of the enclosing serpentinized dunite and sill complex.Some of the problems encountered during diamond drill¬ing in permafrost are briefly discussed."

With over 700 large electric-drive haulage trucks operating in Canadian mining today and over 3700 in mines worldwide, most aspects of electric drive are well known. Recently, however, extensive application of these trucks to down-hill hauling in mountain mining makes it vitally important that many of us better understand the operation and proper application of the dynamic retarding feature of these vehicles. This paper is an attempt to clear up misunderstandings on this subject, to suggest precautions that mining operators should take in comparing competitive retarding systems and to challenge equipment manufacturers to evolve improvements to the important aspect of system performance.
