Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), founded in 1942, is located near the town of Itabira, Brazil. Its iron ore deposits include over 500 million metric tons (mt) of high-grade hematite and about 2 billion mt of itabirite (banded rock formed by thin alternate layers of hematite and silica). These deposits are part of the Iron Ore Quadrangle, of which the overall reserves have been estimated at more than 30 billion mt. The magnitude of the project meant difficult early years for the company, including large investments, extensive railroad rehabilitation, and construction of ore port and ore handling facilities. Companhia Vale do Rio Doce was organized as a stock company, and 91% of its shares are presently owned by the Brazilian government. Financing has been accomplished in part through loans from international monetary agencies foreign banks, and foreign industry, as well as Brazilian banks. The company markets mainly abroad. In 1967, it exported 10.6 long tons (It) of ore, principally to West Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Italy, France, United Kingdom, and the United States. The Rio Doce geographic region where CVRD operates is strategically located among the large population centers of Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, and Vitoria (Fig. 1). It covers an area of approximately 81,000 sq km in the states of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo, and its population in 1968 was about 3.5 million. This region presents excellent prospects for development, with factors favorable for forestry, agriculture, grazing, and exploration for minerals other than iron ore, Electric power (hydroelectric plants) is available, as well as two main systems of transportation: the Rio-Bahia highway and the Vitoria-Minas Railroad. One area of study in the Coal Mine Injury Analysis project was to illustrate and enhance the ability of mine safety management personnel to apply analytical techniques to injury experience data and to justify requests for funds for safety enhancement actions on a cost/benefit and other quantitative basis. Four volumes of this final project report detail (1) the objectives and scope of the mine safety management research, (2) the results of literature review, and case studies, and (3) models developed for mine safety management. The four volumes are titled as Volume III: Mine Safety Management, Volume IV: Analytical Techniques for Mine Safety Management; Volume V: Mine Safety Management Case Studies and Volume IX: Training Cost Model. This volume deals with the development of a microcomputer based training cost model (TCM) which can be used to analyze training cost implications of various types of training. The model has been developed using Aston Tate's dBASE III plus language. The computer program and a test run of the model are presented in this report.

THERE is a considerable tonnage of iron ore in the Menominee Range Michigan that is unsalable only because it has too large a content of sulphur. Beneficiation of such ore is economically desirable, as a rela-tively large quantity of finished concentrate would be obtained (deleteri-ous sulphur mineral content being generally less than 5 per cent) and because large blocks of such ore have been developed incidentally during search for low-sulphur ore. Research on the flotation beneficiation of these high-sulphur ores consisted of: (1) a study of the flotative properties of the principal min-erals in a nearly puree state, (2) flotation of synthetic mixtures of these pure minerals and (3) application of this experimental information to samples of the ores. Gypsum in iron ores is extremely deleterious; but when sufficiently free from impurities it is a valuable commodity. In 1934, the United States produced 1,500,000 tons of calcined and uncalcined gypsum valued at $13,700,000'. Of this quantity and value, Michigan produced approxi-mately 19 per cent4. Thus this investigation may also prove to be of interest in connection with the gypsum industry if minerals separation, such as flotation, becomes necessary in the future processing of gypsum. Data on the flotative properties of gypsum would also be of interest to the science of flotation because such information has been extremely limited. The technical literature reveals one reference to the flotation of gypsum, in which was discussed the use of the mineral, with several others, to determine the relation between the floatability of minerals and the pH of the flotation solution2. This investigation necessarily was not comprehensive in regard to gypsum, but it did show that the mineral could be floated with oleic acid under varying pH conditions.

Experiments performed in this laboratory on the flow of gas-liquid mixtures through unconsolidated sands have been described and discussed in an earlier paper.4 In these earlier experiments a definite relationship was found between the liquid saturation of a sand and its permeability to the liquid or gas phase. Furthermore, the nature of the sand, the permeabilities of the sands over a range between 17 and 260 darcies, appeared to have a negligible effect upon the saturation-permeability relation. Likewise experiments indicated that the viscosity of the liquid, or the substitution of an immiscible liquid for the gas phase, had only a very slight effect on the permeability-saturation relation. This conclusion has since been definitely confirmed by the experiments of M. C. Leverett3 on the flow of oil and water through unconsolidated sands. The sands used by Leverett were of very low permeability (between 6.8 and 1.04 darcies), while the oil-water viscosity ratio varied between 90 and 0.057. Since the sands that constitute petroleum reservoirs are largely consolidated, although of widely varying degrees of consolidation, it was desirable to extend the experiments on gas-liquid mixtures to consolidated sand. In the study of consolidated sands additional variables are involved, but for the initial experiments the only new variable to be introduced was the cementing material. Experimental Procedure A comparatively limited assortment of sandstones was available for the selection of the experimental material. Of these, the Nichols buff sandstone appeared to be most suitable. It gives no visual evidence of any bedding planes, it has a firm structure, permitting easy handling, and its permeability is about 0.5 darcy. Its only disadvantage is the fact that it contains an appreciable amount of ferric oxide which, for experiments involving water, will hydrate and reduce the permeability. This

THe properties required of gold alloys for jewelry are not well standardized, due in part to problems peculiar to certain branches of the jewelry industry, in part to the individual preference of the fabricator and to his willingness to cope with certain difficulties in manufacture, which arise with the use of certain alloys. General Requirements In general, the properties desired may be classed as follows: 1. Color should conform to the dictates of good taste and smart style. 2. Corrosion resistance and tarnish resistance should he good. This is to a considerable extent determined by the carat. Resistance to such corrosive agents as mercuric chloride as well as certain depi1atories is unreasonable to expect and difficult to meet. 3. Strength and hardness must be adequate to maintain the delicate contours of finely modeled jewelry. 4. Wear resistance must be great enough to resist abnormal wear, such as is encountered by a wedding ring in a lifetime of wear. 5. Ductility must be sufficient to permit the fabrication of drawn shells, tubes and difficult shapes. Material having a yield point of not less than 60,000 lb. per sq. in., an ultimate strength of 100,000 Ib. per sq. in., and an elongation of 40 per cent. is desirable. 6. Melting point should be between 800" and 1200" C. Colored Golds The popular green and yellow golds are based on the gold-silver-copper alloys; in some cases modified by the introduction of zinc to improve the casting properties and to alter the color, and nickel to increase the strength. The properties of the Au-Ag-Cu system have been the subject of a very thorough investigation by Jänecke,l Sterner-Rainer12 and Carter."

"In-situ observation of unidirectional solidification using transparent substance has been performed to investigate the growth direction of solid phase. Cell or dendrite of which preferred growth direction is not parallel to the heat flow direction was observed with various solidification conditions. Dimensionless growth direction (p) changes from 0 to 1 with increasing growth velocity at a constant temperature gradient. Introducing the dimensionless growth velocity, the relation between p and growth condition could be correlated.IntroductionTransition in macroscopic solidified structure from chill to columnar zone which is found in normal castings takes place via grain selection1). Cast products such as turbine blades are unidirectionally solidified, grain selection plays an important role to choose suitable crystals which have reasonable orientation in the region called ""starter"", which is a very initial part of casting2). Therefore, grain selection is a very important process in the formation of casting structure. The present authors have been studying on the process of grain selection using succinonitrile, which is a transparent organic substance and have found that the growth distance necessary for grain selection depends upon the solidification condition3-5). When the solid/liquid interface is dendritic, the grain selection occurs quickly. On the other hand, when the solid/liquid interface is cellular, it occurs slowly. We supposed that the growth direction of dendrite is different from that of cell when the substance is unidirectionally solidified. Indeed, Kurz and Fisher wrote in their text book that dendrite grows along its preferred growth direction, <100>, regardless of heat flow direction and that cell grows along heat flow direction regardless of its preferred growth direction1). However, there is no quantitative description about the growth direction when the solid/liquid interfacial morphology is cellular. Furthermore, there have been little works6) to study the growth direction of cell and dendrite."

"A new technique for the selective separation of rare earths and impurities from lower grade titaniferous ores has been developed which will reduce the overall reduction in the energy costs, and therefore the CO2 generation by at least an order of magnitude during the chlorination and waste handling stages of TiO2 to TiCl4 reaction. The process includes roasting the ilmenite ore with alkali followed by water washing step, which removes nearly 80% of oxides of lanthanide and actinide elements present in lower grades of titaniferous minerals. In the context of preferential separation of rare- 3+ + earth and actinide oxides, we have examined the roles of Al and K ions on the lattice structures of ilmenite and complex titanate as the product layer forms during the roasting in air in the presence of potash. The composition of the mixtures of oxides derived from the separation process shows that the mixture of rare-earth oxides m ay be a high-value co-product of the overall beneficiation process.IntroductionWorldwide the production of synthetic rutile is carried out either by the sulphate or the slag-making followed by fluidised bed chlorination of TiO2 enriched slag granules. The chlorinated gas is then re-oxidized to make white pigment grade TiO2. The waste generated by the sulphate process is predominantly iron sulphate, which has limited use in the water treatment plant. The remaining wastes from the sulphate process undergo further treatment using filtration followed by evaporation and thermal decomposition after which it is disposed into deep sea. On the other hand the chloride waste is extremely hazardous and requires special case by neutralisation, followed by impoundment in a managed pond, where it is monitored for long-term for potential contamination to the soil and ground water. Rare-earth and prelanthanide wastes often end up in the pond where they are diluted and irretrievably lost for further use or recycle. Certain parts of the world the chloride process wastes are pumped via deep boreholes into porous geological strata. The present techniques of disposal are not only expensive but also pose continued threat groundwater and soil and marine life in case of sulphate waste [1, 2]."

Based on theoretical and experimental evidence a discussion follows of the behavior of phosphorus -bearing iron ores in the R-N Direct Reduction Process and suggestions are made of methods of reducing the amount of phosphorus in the metallic end product. In ferrous metallurgy a direct reduction process is one in which iron ores are reduced to metallic iron with gaseous or solid reductants without the appearance of a liquid phase. A number of attractive features have induced several companies and government agencies to invest in the development of direct reduction processes. A summary of all direct reduction processes up to 1954 has been given by Barrett,&apos; and Wiberg,2 and Willems3 have reviewed the most recent developments in this rapidly expanding field. Many difficulties have been encountered in direct reduction processes and the nature of these difficulties has varied from process to process. One problem common to almost all of them is the removal of phosphorus which is one of the reasons for the rather pessimistic outlook given by some government publications4&apos;5 to direct reduction processes. In this paper an attempt is made to give a theoretical explanation of the variations in phosphorus removal observed in the R-NY Direct Reduction Process. However, many conclusions are general enough to be applicable to other processes. Most iron ores treated by the R-N process yield products lower in phosphorus than the original ore. A qualitative account of the factors has been given by Stewart, Reed, and Herasymenkoe but the erratic removal of phosphorus from some ores and the general importance of this problem make a more careful analysis of the theoretical aspects desirable. There is more information contained in a screen analysis than is ordinarily recognized, and there is an increasing need for methods of making this additional information easily available. As more comprehensive studies of crushing and grinding are made, and as the possibilities of decreased expense and increased extraction through a closer control of grinding are explored, methods of interpreting screen analyses assume an importance which they have not had heretofore. The information commonly desired, which can be determined from a complete and carefully made screen analysis, includes: (1) the size distribution of the material passing the finest screen, (2) the presence of a hard grinding fraction, (3) the location of natural grain sizes, (4) the presence of different materials with markedly different grinding characteristics, (5) the presence and amount of finely divided material such as clay, which is merely unlocked in grinding, and (6) the total surface area of the ground product. It is necessary to know the fundamental law of size distribution of a homogeneous material in order to correctly resolve a screen-analysis curve, and to understand the variations and anomalies that a sample may exhibit when compared with the ideal curve. This fundamental law was developed by Gaudin,1 who showed that when the logarithm of the per cent weight retained on any screen and passing the next larger screen in the Tyler standard screen scale was plotted against the logarithm of the screen aperture the resulting curve for the finer sizes of a homogeneous crusher or grinding-mill product would be a straight line. Gross and Zimmerley2 experimentally confirmed Rittinger&apos;s law, which states that the useful work done in crushing a homogeneous material is directly proportional to the new surface area produced; and showed that in the larger screen sizes resulting from impact crushing a

In May 1998, Hanson Aggregates Midwest, as an outcome of mine planning, offered a 10-acre tract of land containing the famed fossil-bearing Silica formation, to the City of Sylvania, OH. in the form of a 99-year lease agreement. The Olander Park System, and Ohio code park operating within Sylvania Township, was then approved by Hanson and the City to manage and fund the park. All parties signed the lease in August of 1999. In November 2001, local residents voted to fund the park by a margin of 2 to 1. The park will consist of a shallow (approx. 20 ft.) former cement production quarry that is 700 ft. long by 300 ft. wide. Hanson’s motivation and vision for the park was fivefold: 1) the site was located away from long-term reserve access; 2) it would serve nicely as buffer property for the active quarry; 3) it had become an area of illegal dumping by locals in the past; 4) trespassing and safety issues would be limited by allowing supervised usage; and 5) the shallow outcropping contains the world famous, fossil-bearing Silica shale. Hanson will supply shale to the park perpetually via stripping activities in the process of uncovering quality construction aggregate limestone and dolomite reserves. Thousands of enthusiastic fossil hunters have already combed throughout the shale in their quest for “treasures”. The park’s master plan also features nature trails, picnic areas, a fossil-themed play area, amphitheater, visitor’s center and gift shop. Given the natural and people resources that Sylvania Fossil Park will have to offer, Hanson is confident that it will become the premier invertebrate fossil hunting site in the United States. It will also remain a solid community relations vehicle for years to come.

IT is difficult to judge how much influence the success attained during its first year, 186465, by the School of Mines at Columbia had on developments in education for the mineral industry elsewhere in the immediately subsequent years. The facts are as follows: 1. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology began giving instruction in February 1865, with a mining course included in its curriculum. 2. Early in 1865 the faculty of the Department of Science, Literature and the Arts of the University of Michigan requested permission from the Regents to establish "a course of study to be called the School of Mines . . . Also that the degree of Mining Engineering be conferred on students who should complete the course of study prescribed in the same." A resolution authorizing this was adopted by the Regents on March 28, 1865. 3. Samuel Hooper endowed a Sturgis-Hooper professorship of geology at Harvard in 1865 with the intention of making it a nucleus of a new School of Practical Mining and Geology. 4. Yale appointed Alfred P. Rockwell professor of mining in 1865. 5. Lafayette College appointed Henry S. Osborn professor of mining and metallurgy in 1865. 6. Washington College (as Washington and Lee was then known), rising out of the ashes of Civil War destruction, made a fresh start in 1865, with General Lee as its president, and offered a mining course in the first catalogue thereafter published. 7. Lehigh University, founded in 1866, had a mining curriculum from its beginning. 8. Rensselaer Polytechnic began offering a curriculum in mining and metallurgical engineering in 1867. It would be natural to suppose that these events were a reaction to the success of the school at Columbia, and possibly they

Hot-dipped heat-treated zinc coatings on sheet steel were examined with X-rays. The phases identified were compared with those listed in the modern literature 01 the zinc-iron system. The zeta (FeZn13) phase is shown to correspond to the phase found by Schueler (1925) in heat-treated zinc coatings. An investigation was undertaken to determine the phases present in hot-dipped heat-treated zinc coatings on steel sheets and wire. This kind of coating on wire was studied some years ago by Schuelerl by microscopic and chemical methods. He reported a new phase, FeZn10. Later, Clark and Stillwell,2 using X-ray crystal analysis, identified a new phase in ordinary galva. nized wire, which was assumed to be the FeZn10 phase. Since the extensive review of the iron-zinc alloys presented a few years ago,3 much new work has been published, some of which5-l6 was too late to be included in the recent edition (1939) of the American Society for Metals&apos; Handbook.4 Figs. 1 and 2 are reproductions of the latest iron-zinc diagram proposed by Schramml1 as a result of his investigations by microscopic, thermal, magnetic susceptibility and X-ray methods. Table 1 summarizes all the known published X-ray data of the phases Present. The solubility of iron in zinc has been determined by x-ray methods.10 In the same manner the homogeneity range of the P phase was studiedlo using the principle that the parameter of an intermetallic compound changes while the concentration of One of the constituents changes. This chapter is a partial summary of an investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) made in response to a recent request by the Assistant Secretary, Water and Power Development of the U.S. Department of the Interior, for a comprehensive review of horizontal boring technology related to underground power-line installation. This review is concerned primarily with 3 to 36-in. diam horizontal holes from several hundred to several thousand feet in length. An electric power system consists of three essential functions: generation, transmission, and distribution. The generation component includes the generating station and step-up substation; the transmission component includes the transmission line and stepdown substation at typical voltage levels ranging from 69 to 345 kv for underground lines and 69 to 500 kv for overhead transmission lines; the distribution component includes the distribution line carrying the commonly used voltages of 120, 208, and 240 v, the distribution transformer, and the line to the service customer.l The Federal Power Commission reports that 1600 miles of underground transmission lines of 60 to 345-kv capacity are now in service in the United States. By 1980, it is estimated that approximately 3000 miles of trans- mission lines will have to be placed underground.2 The cost of burying electric transmission lines underground in metropolitan areas, approximately 30 miles from the center of each of the most populated cities, will exceed $1.5 billion with the methods now available. The wide spread in unit costs of overhead and underground transmission lines narrows as right-of-way costs for overhead transmission in congested areas increase. Improved methods of underground emplacement will certainly reduce this difference in costs and even further favor underground emplacement. Also, in the future, overhead transmission lines will probably not be permitted in highly built-up areas.

IT has long been common knowledge that workers in anthracite are prone to develop a disabling disease of the lungs. Some of the earliest scientific contributors dealing with anthracosis were: Pearson1, in his report in 1813, on the coloring matter of the bronchial glands and black spots in the lungs; Stratton2, in 1838, who first termed the condition anthracosis; Greenhow3, who reported to the pathological society in 1865, on the Black Lung of the Collier, and Pick4 in 1870, who reported on the chemical composition of the ash of a collier&apos;s lungs. Visconti5, in 1870, is accredited with being the first to use the term "silicosis" to denote the pathological condition of the lungs resulting from the inhalation of silica. Rovida6 confirmed the reports of Pick and Visconti in 1871, in his report on a case of silicosis and chemical examination of the lungs for silica content. The relationship of pulmonary infection, as associated with disabling pneumoconiosis affecting the coal miner, has frequently been discussed. While most reports have emphasized the role of infection, there has been some disagreement regarding the prevalence of tuberculosis among those suffering from anthracosis. The report by Wainwright and Nichols7 in 1905 has frequently been cited to show that the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis among coal miners was -less than that among the general population. It was their opinion that pulmonary tuberculosis was more prevalent among the miners&apos; families than among the miners themselves.. Collis and Gil-christ8, in 1928 in their study of the Effects of Dust upon Coal Trimmers, concluded that among such workers there was an excess of deaths from bronchitis and pneumonia but not from pulmonary tuberculosis. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of high-purity titanium made by two processes. Sodium-reduced metal with 58 Brinell hardness number (B.h.n.) and electrorefined metal with 60 B.h.n. and 70 B.h.n. were used. Titanium of these hardness levels did not work-harden excessively, and beyond 40 percent cold work the hardening effect was not great. Rapid softening occurred when the metal was annealed at temperature between 300° and 600° C. Full annealing, as determined by property and microstructure studies, was accomplished after 30 minutes at 700° C. A recrystallization diagram is presented which is based on determinations of annealed grain size as a function of rolling reduction and annealing time. For reductions of less than 20 percent, exaggerated grain growth occurred during annealing; for reductions greater than 20 percent, the variation in grain size for each annealing temperature was minor.

In June, 1965, Sanderson and scully5 reported at the Conference on Environment Sensitive Mechanical Properties of Materials at the Research Institute for Advanced Studies at Baltimore that thin foils of titanium could be prepared by chemical polishing in a mixture of 44 pct HF and 73 pct HNO3 in the volumetric ratio 2:3. The technique is simpler than that since reported by Rice and Orava. As-received annealed titanium (containing 0.8 pct Fe and 30 ppm H) in the form of sheet 0.05 cm thick is placed in the solution and moved up and down. The reaction is violent but suitable foils are obtained very easily and consistently. A typical micrograph is shown in Fig. 3. The small precipitates were not identified. Yamane and ueda6 observed many spotlike features which they referred to as small dislocation loops. While their spots may be due to the reaction of the warm foil with the air as suggested by Rice and Orava, the precipitates in Fig. 3 are also found when foils of titanium are prepared by electro-polishing at low temperatures and subsequently examined in the electron microscope without any inter- mediate warming. Furthermore, they are not a surface effect. It is necessary to add that alloys of titanium cannot be so easily thinned by the chemical polishing solution described above since it contaminates the a, phase with hydrogen and produces y hydride. These matters are described at length in a paper7 and their relevance to stress corrosion is considered elsewhere.&apos;-* Author&apos;s Reply The authors are grateful to Dr. Scully for bringing to our attention his hitherto unpublished technique for thinning unalloyed titanium, and deeply regret the unintended apparent duplication. The chemical thinning solution (7 parts HNO3 and 3 parts HF, by volume) reported by us is the same as that with which, for some period in the past, we had experienced success in the preparation of foils from single and polycrystalline niobium. Its subsequent effective application to titanium was a logical step, which, clearly independently of Scully, was conceived by Mr. Rice, to whom full credit is due. A few comments are warranted concerning some of the details of the preceding Discussion. It is evident to the discerning reader that the two thinning techniques under consideration are chemically almost identical, and in that sense are equally "simple". The chemical aspect is, of course, the one of primary importance in both communications. Thereafter, the relative simplicity is dictated by the mechanics of the actual thinning operation selected by the individual investigator. Our standard dimpling, or dishing, procedure was chosen with a view toward providing, for the electron transparent areas of the sample, the maximum protection from extraneous deformation during handling. That the long, straight dislocations visible in Scully&apos;s electron micrograph of a seemingly recovered structure closely resemble handling dislocations would tend to indicate the merit of our adopted technique. Features similar to those which Scully has attributed to precipitates, without any apparent diffraction contrast confirmation, were not observed in any of our clean foils taken from annealed or deformed specimens. This was admittedly somewhat surprising since the 3700 ppm (nominal) Fe in the A-70 commercial-grade titanium examined should have given rise to TiFe precipitates. Presumably these existed but were un-resolvable. Curiously, Scully&apos;s "precipitate1&apos; density is fairly high although the iron content quoted was less than one-fourth of that in our material. One is forced to conclude from the evidence that prior thermal and mechanical treatments are responsible for the two different types of structure observed.
