THE profitable disposal and utilization of much of our slack coal, lignite, and other low-grade fuels is one of the major problems facing the coal mining industry of Canada today. It is my belief that the pulverization process applied to these fuels opens the door to greater efficiency and greater prosperity, and I wish to discuss briefly with you some features of its development and advantages to date. Indeed, the art of burning pulverized coal under stationary boilers is one of the romances of modern engineering. As a Nova Scotian, I feel some pride in the fact that at Chignecto Mines, N.S., was built in 1906 the first pit-mouth power plant on the North American continent. This was built to make effective for the first time Edison's dream of carrying coal for power by wire rather than by rail. This plant, built by the Maritime Coal, Railway and Power Company, Limited, success-fully utilized underfeed stokers for twenty years but in 1927 was replaced by a more modern plant equipped with machinery for burning pulverized coal, which is now operating very successfully. A further source of pride is the fact that the first boilers on this continent to be operated by pulverized coal were installed by the Dominion Coal Company at New Waterford, N.S., in 1912 and were satisfactorily operated during the lifetime of the plant. It is an acknowledged fact that average living conditions on a large part of the North American continent are far superior to those of any other people on earth. The reason is that we use so much more machinery per capita, and cheap power supply has been a large factor in bringing that about. Statistics show that where one horse-power was used one hundred years ago to assist man in his work, five hundred horse-power is used today. Truly a remarkable development and the key to our present high standard of living. Lack of coal in the chief industrial centres of Canada has forced the extra-ordinary development of the water powers which Providence has placed in those centres. How many of us realize that Canada stands second in the world in the per capita development of hydro power, Switzerland being first and the United States sixth? From this condition, we are reminded of the fact that the per capita foreign trade of Canada far exceeds that of our great neighbour to the South-but another illustration of the benefits accruing from our great power development.

Historical Sketch Occurrences of native copper have been known along the Arctic coast of Canada, especially in the vicinity of the. Coppermine river, since the early part of the eighteenth century (See map, Figure 2, insert). In 1769, Samuel Hearne, a clerk of the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Churchill, was sent to explore the 'copper mines' from which natives had been reported to secure copper for tools, fishing spears, etc. After two successful attempts, he reached the Coppermine river in 1771, accompanied by Indian guides. This hazardous trip was indeed a remarkable feat when one considers the vast distance covered, a great deal of which was barren lands. At Bloody falls, (See Figure 1) on the Coppermine river, Hearne's Indians swooped down on a party of sleeping Esquimaux, who gathered there each summer to fish, and murdered the entire band encamped on that side of the river. Hence the name of the falls. Hearne's knowledge of minerals was undoubtedly limited. He reported having seen the copper mines from which the natives were securing the copper, but he failed to prove the economic possibilities of the copper occurrences or to give an accurate description of any deposit. Sir John Franklin visited the area in 1821. He and other members of his expedition, namely, Richardson, Back, Kendall, and Hood, reported native-copper float to occur in the vicinity of the Coppermine river and Bathurst inlet.

THE history of mining in South Africa differs somewhat from that of other countries in the part taken by the aborigines in the development ?of the mineral deposits. The Spaniards in America, and the fortune-seekers of Australia and New Zealand, found large numbers of natives in these new countries, but the inhabitants did not become willing or efficient workers ill the mines which the white men started. The Kaffirs of South. Africa have not shown the same antipathy to labor, nor do they show any signs of dying out in the presence of the white man's civilization. They are a virile race, and so far the vices of civilization have not killed. them. While it is true that the brain and skill necessary for the exploitation of the mineral resources of this sub-continent-have been supplied by the white race, it is also a fact that most of the rough labor in the development of the mining industry of South Africa has been done by the Kaffirs. The Kaffir tribes differ greatly in their mental and physical capabilities. Compare, for instance, a Zulu of Natal with a Bechuana, or a Xosa of Cape Colony with some of the degenerate tribes of Central or East Africa, and you will find that they have little in common, save that their skin is black and that they do not believe in clothes. As a general rule, the tribe's in the milder, healthier climates are far superior, both in mind and body, to the Kaffirs brought up in the hot malarial sections of Central Africa; and it naturally follows that the black men from the temperate zones of the country, are much finer workmen than the degenerates from less favorable sections: It is universal in South Africa to speak. of the .Kaffirs as " boys." No matter if he is 90 years old, the Kaffir is always a " boy," and in this paper the word " boy " is synonymous with Kaffir.

During the past ten years, the Calumet Div. of Calumet & Hecla, Inc. has conducted extensive exploration and mining in the footwall of the Osceola amygdaloid lode in the native copper district in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In an attempt to delineate more clearly the extent and nature of high-grade footwall copper mineralization, 876 diamond drill and long steel holes aggregating slightly more than 47,000 ft have thus far been drilled from the accessible hanging-wall workings. Early in this program it became obvious, through inspection of footwall workings in progress, that due to the erratic and bunchy occurrence of the native copper in the footwall zone, the exploration drilling was failing to outline completely the extent of the oreshoots. Early drilling results indicated isolated pockets of ore whereas in actual practice the footwall was found to be fairly thoroughly mineralized in shoots within the ore zone. Based on drill results only, the "success factor" (discovery ratio) was only 34%.

"Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Ltd. (controlled by Noranda Mines Limited) operates two lead-zinccopper- silver mines approximately 20 miles inland from Bathurst, N.B. The principal No. 12 orebody is mined by underground methods; the second, the No. 6 orebody (6 miles away), is recovered by open-pit mining. No. 12 underground operations ar•e in two parallel massive sulphide orebodies about 400 ft apart, dipping at 75 to 80 degrees and plunging almost vertically. The initial mining phase involved longhole open stoping from the 1550 level to the crown pillar, with main levels at 150-ft intervals and sub-levels between at 75 ft. Stope dimensions average 120 ft long, 100 ft wide and 400 ft high, with alternate rib pillars as well as sill and crown pillars. Initially, ore was transferred through scram drifts below each stope by means of 125-hp electric slushers and 72-in. folding scrapers, being delivered to gravity ore-pass collection •systems feeding a primary jaw crusher below. Later, track and trackless drawpoints were utilized below most longhole open stopes and pillars. Rib pillars were recovered by longhole methods, with large blasts into a central slot and undercut, after adjacent stopes had been filled. Waste-rock stripping from No. 6 open pit has been supplied to No. 12 stopes as backfill, by means of gravityfill raises.In 1968, the decision was made to mine the remaining ore zones by mechanized cut-and-fill methods, utilizing Load-Haul-Dump equipment. Currently, approximately 60 per cent of No. 12 mine production comes from mechanized cut-and-fill mining. As before, backfill is supplied from No. 6 open pit stripping waste rock, which has been crushed to minus 6 in. The ultimate objective is to supply virtually all production requirements by mechanized cut-and-fill techniques. The No. 6 open pit, which commenced production in 1966, covers an area of 1,500 by 1,200 ft, equivalent to 41 acres approximately. Ramp roads are graded at 8.5 per cent. Each mining bench is 36 ft high and the ultimate pit will consist of 14 benches for a final pit depth of 504 ft. Present depth is 180 ft."

"The mining and metallurgy industry is highly energy intensive and one of the largest energy users in Canada. Energy costs are also a major component of total production costs in this industry as described in the 1990 Report of The Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC). For some plants, energy costs are reported to be up to 30% of total production costs. Therefore, a reduction in energy costs provides an opportunity to improve industry profitability. The specific energy intensity and production costs can be reduced by using modem energy efficient natural gas technologies. In addition, these technologies often improve product quality and increase productivity. Natural gas not only offers economic benefits, but is also environmentally benign as compared to other major energy sources. Emissions of NO"", CO2 particulates and SO2 are lower with natural gas than other fossil fuels.This paper provides a brief overview of some state-of-the-art gas technologies for the mining and metallurgy industry including cogeneration, oxy-air-fuel burners, ceramic immersion tube heaters, direct gas contact process, low NOx burners, and energy efficient liquid heating systems.CogenerationCogeneration is defined as the simultaneous production of electricity or mechanical power and useful process heat from a single fuel source. One of the primary considerations in selecting a cogeneration system is the relative quantities of electrical and thermal energy which are to be produced. Two types of systems are discussed below."

IN the last few years, much study has been devoted to increasing stoping efficiency. The reasons for this are shortage of manpower, shorter working hours, operating regulations, and shortages of essential materials. More efficiency in mining methods is needed to offset these adverse factors. In the past, attention has been centred upon haulage, hoisting equipment, mill flow-sheets, etc., but recently the spotlight has been focused on the cost of stoping and the cost of handling materials. Scrapers and scraper hoists have thus assumed greater importance. In order to make it possible for certain orebodies to be mined at a profit, it has been necessary to apply assembly-line practices to the streamlining of mining methods. All cycles of the mining operation must balance, and the sooner broken ore is removed from the working face, the sooner another round can be started. Since the introduction of scraper hoists in metal mines more than thirty years ago, much progress has been made in their design and application. Alert operators are now constantly watching for methods in which to apply scrapers. The saving of manpower in development work and the changing of mining methods that once employed manual handling of materials are increasing vital wartime tonnages. Essential ores from newly discovered orebodies are moving rapidly from stopes to reduction plants-because it is now possible to develop an orebody and place it in production with a minimum of manpower and development work. Today, speed is one of the prime essentials o mining. Everywhere, there is a concentrated effort to use experienced miners in breaking rock, in timbering, and in carrying out the various phases of mining that require many months of training. Much effort is being made to mechanize the working places because experienced men naturally prefer to work where the majority of materials are handled mechanically. In line with this policy, many new men are being taught the details of scraper work, because even green men can quickly become acquainted with scrapers and thereby release older heads to perform the more skilled phases of mining.

The advent of the process control computer with its capabilities of monitoring, storage, and real-time control has revolutionized control technology in the mineral industry. Initial efforts to introduce the computer into process control began in the early 1960's. However, it wasn't until the last decade with the introduction of integrated circuits and minicomputers that truly successful applications became visible. Computer hardware and real-time operating software have improved to the point that they rarely provide major problems in the implementation of successful control systems. At this time the most prevalent problems and obstacles affecting the successful implementation of a control system are as follows: (1) reliable and representative sampling systems; (2) rugged and reliable process sensors; (3) the availability of well-defined control strategies; (4) the willingness of plant management to provide the continuous support necessary to acquire and/or train appropriate personnel in the operation and maintenance of advanced control systems. Discussion of these problems and of the instrumentation required for the successful application of computers in minerals processing plants follows. In order to enhance this discussion the remainder of this subsection is broken up into individual mineral processing categories.

Blasting practices based on sound engineering principles are well established but the successful application of these practices requires accurate information about the overburden geology and close supervision of the drilling and blasting operations. Good design alone is not sufficient to insure good results, but the process may be difficult to control unless steps are taken to measure the variables and to provide management and the operators with the information they need to establish and maintain control. Satisfactory blasting can be defined as loosening and fragmenting the rock so that it can be handled by the excavating equipment, while at the same time, governmental regulations on air blast and ground vibrations are not violated. Optimum practices achieve these objectives at the lowest combined cost of the drilling and loading operations and the blasting materials. Total system optimization, that is, taking into consideration the effect of fragmentation on the cost of operating and maintaining excavating equipment as well as drilling and blasting costs, probably is not a reasonable goal at the present time.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 266 natural gas samples from 20 States and 2 foreign countries. None of the analyses have been previously published in annual reports. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

"IntroductionMUCH PROSPECTING, exploration, and development work was done for uranium in Canada in 1952, chiefly in northern Saskatchewan and in the Great Bear Lake region of the northwest Territories. The outstanding feature of the year was the great amount of work done in preparing for production at the Ace mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining, Limited, in the Goldfields region . of Saskatchewan. Many private companies and prospectors were also active in this region. Most of the other parts of Canada where uranium has been found received less attention than during the last few years, partly because so much interest was taken in the Goldfields region.In presenting this short summary of the year's activities now, the writer is handicapped because the season is not yet over; some discoveries have probably not yet been announced, and there has not yet been time to digest the numerous reports that have been sent in by companies and prospectors. In any case it would be impossible to give details for most of the discoveries and properties, because that would require a long report, and because that information is classed as confidential until released by the discoverers and companies concerned. It is only possible, therefore, to give a few generalizations, a brief out-line of the activities in northern Saskatchewan, even briefer ,accounts of the work in other parts of the country, and a few details that property owners have informed the writer he may publish or that have already been published by the owners."

THE Tennessee Copper Company's operations are in the Ducktown Basin, in the extreme southeast corner of Tennessee. The ore is of the heavy sulphide type, the predominating sulphides being pyrite, pyr-rhotite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. The gangue is a micaceous schist, with varying amounts of free quartz. The mining operation develops two classes of ore, each of which is concentrated by the flotation process in separate mills. Table 1 shows a typical analysis of the ore treated in each mill. This was gradually increased to 600 tons by 1926, to 900 tons in 1928, and to 1350 tons in 1938. Fig. 1 shows the crushing and grinding flowsheet in 1928, when the capacity was 900 tons; Fig. 2, the crushing and grinding flowsheet that was developed by 1938, for the treatment of 1350 tons per day. A comparison of these flowsheets reveals that this increase in tonnage, with a subsequent improved operation, was accom-plished with identically the same major equipment. Improving a concentrator's capacity, metallurgical results, and costs as time goes by is a commonplace practice, and is accomplished in various ways, depending upon the local conditions. The reason for presenting the data of how this was accomplished in the mills of the Tennessee Copper Co. is that a fast-running rod mill plays such an interesting role

This paper studies the grinding behaviour of vanadium-titanium magnetite concentrate in a ball mill. The grinding kinetics, surface morphology, lattice distortion, wettability and moisture capacity were analysed. Grinding kinetics equation was established based on population balances model with the size distribution data from a laser diffraction technique. The SEM photos of the ground concentrate showed that the surface gets rough with increasing grind time. Agglomeration of fine particles was enhanced when the grinding time reached 30 minutes. X-ray diffraction results showed that a loss in crystalline occurred with increasing the grinding time. The peaks of the X-ray diffraction patterns are significantly broadened with increasing grinding time. Wettability, characterised by contact angle between the material and water, improved due to the fact that the surface roughness increased with increasing grinding time. Moisture capacity of concentrate ascends abruptly in the first three minutes and then changed slowly with increasing grinding time. The water transfer coefficient in the particles increased rapidly in the first six minutes and then decreased quickly until grinding time reached 12 minutes.CITATION:Zhang, R, Lv, X, Bai, C, Xu, J and Zhang, S, 2013. The potential of the coal reserves in the western United States for meeting future energy needs has been recognized for quite some time. However, two of the major constraints which have tended to limit the development of these reserves which can only be deep-mined are the great thicknesses of the coal seams encountered and their high pitch. Although new mining methods may need to be developed to recover these reserves, at least in the short- term the industry has to incorporate presently available equipment which were not originally designed for thick-seam mining. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the various equipment that are in use today and their possible application to thick-seam mining. The paper also addresses the various ground control and safety considerations that are unique to thick-seam extraction.

A rapid infrared forming technique has been developed to fabricate titanium matrix composites. This technique applies infrared heating to infiltrate titanium alloys into carbon and silicon carbide prepregs. The entire process typically takes 1-2 minutes in an inert atmosphere. The advantages of this technique are that the process is fast, simple, does not require a vacuum or a high external pressure. The process is very economical both in energy conservation and operation costs. This technique has been used to produce void free composites with limited, well controlled fiber-matrix reactions and mechanical properties comparable to currently available titanium matrix composites.

Diffiusion of magnesium into the surface of LiF crystals to controlled depths and subsequent heat treatments provided a wide range of surface zone harahesses and structure, The bend strength of the LiF crystals was increased by as much as an or-dev of magnitude. Ductility was achieved when dislocation generation occurred in the diffusion zone or when dislocations penetrated to the surface from the intevior. A critical surface hardness of 130 to 140 kg per sq mm was found helozu which generation could take place in the diffusion zone and ahoue which the zone was impenetrable, This hardness was obtainable by several methods, among them the aging of quenched MgF2 -LiF solutions to produce MgF, precipitation. Maximum hardness was ohtained in quenched specimens with no visihle evidence of MgF,. Diffusion-zone formation followed a parabolic rate law and an activation energy of 20.9 kcal per mole was obtained for the process. RECENTLY, the properties of ionic crystals as related to surface condition have been receiving much attention, specifically the transitions between ductile and brittle behavior. Originally Joffe 1 showed that NaCl crystals could be made ductile by immersion in water and related this to the elimination of surface microcracks. Aerts and DeKeyser 2 and Gorur 3' have subsequently shown that ionic crystals are inherently ductile and are embrittled through contact with air. Machlin and Murray4 hypothesized that a layer of NaCIO3 produced by contact of ozone with NaCl induced embrittlement by acting as a barrier to outward dislocation flow. westwood,' Rosenberg and Cadoff,9 and Bilello and cadoff' have reported surface strengthening of LiF crystals by coating with a magnesium compound and then heat treating for adherence. The major effect of the coat was to inhibit dislocation-slip lines from reaching the specimen surface. westwoods showed microcrack formation and fracture to be caused by slip-band interactions at the surface. The material presented in this paper is an extension of the work reported earlier by Bilello, Rosenberg, and cadoff'6,7 and illustrates the wide range of surface properties and bulk behavior obtainable by use of heat-treated magnesium-diffused surface regions in LiF crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The LiF single crystals were obtained from the Harshaw Chemical Co. Some batch to batch variation was observed; therefore all specimens for a given test series were cleaved from the same crystal. The typical dimension used was 1 by 0.1 by 0.40 in. Surface damage resulting from cleavage was removed by chemically polishing in a 2 pct NH4OH solution. Each group of specimens was given a vacuum anneal at 700°C for 4 hr to provide a base standard for measuring comparative effects of various surface treatments. To produce the reacted surface zone, the annealed specimens were immersed in a boiling suspension of MgF, in doubly distilled HzO, agitated slbwly for 30 sec, removed, and dried at room temperature. Uniform coatings of MgF, were deposited with a thickness of approximately 5 mils. It should be noted that this technique can be modified for use with crystals which are soluble in water by using boiling absolute alcohol as the dissolving medium. This was found effective for the coating of NaCl with MgF2. The diffused surface zone was obtained by annealing the coated samples at elevated temperatures in a vacuum of lob4 mm Hg. Penetration depth was controlled by varying the annealing time from 1/2 to 28 hr. After heat treatment, the samples were tested for bend strength and hardness. Load was applied by four-point bending in a hard-beam testing jig. Four-point rather than three-point bending was used to provide a wide area of constant stress and to minimize the effect of localized inhomogenities in the specimen. The deflection rate was 8 x min-' and the distance between knife edges was 1/4 in. Load-time curves were obtained from a chart recorder coupled to the machine and converted to resolved shear stress on the shear plane vs deflection, as plotted in the figures. The unstressed portions of the sample outside of the two outer knife edges were used for the microhardness studies. THE PROPERTY of the Lamaque Mining Company, Limited, ?is located in the Town of Bourlamaque, seventy miles east of Noranda, in Bourlamaque township, Abitrbi county, north western Quebec. Gold production commenced at Lamaque in April, 1935, with an initial mill capacity of 250 tons per day. The capacity was doubled in November of the same year, and in December, 1937, it further increased to 1,200 tons per day. During the war years the mill operated at a reduced tonnage, but in 1951 milling units were added along with complementary crushing and shop facilities to bring the capacity to 1,500 tons per day. Finally, in 1953, the capacity was raised to 2,000 tons per day, which rate is being maintained at the present time. The total production at Lamaque from April 2nd, 1935, to December 31st, 1956, has been 9,168,901 tons of ore from which 2,208,168 ounces of gold was recovered. The total value of this production , excluding E.G. M.À.*, was $77,869,653.

This circular presents a summary of the domestic chromium industry, and discusses the salient features of the world situation , reflecting the literature of the subject . The United States Bureau of Mines has in its files additional detailed information on many subjects briefly discussed in this paper and desires to assist the industries and the public by giving further data in response to individual inquiries . It will welcome comment and criticism and any contributions that would assist in making future editions of this circular more accurate . Unlike most common metals , chromium is rarely marketed as a pure metal . The chromium industry deals mainly with chromite , the principal ore of chromium , and with ferrochromium , the basic alloy in which chromium enters the metallurgical industry.
