Coal spontaneous combustion is one of the disasters occurring in underground coal mines. As a typical case, the spontaneous combustion of broken coal left in the longwall gobs often happen which could greatly interrupt the normal mining production. Such concealed thermal event is featured as rapid development and difficulty in locating “hot” spots. If such spontaneous combustion fails to be timely prevented and controlled, a large amount of toxic gases (mainly CO) and smoke could flow and diffuse in the underground working sections, which could present safety hazards for coal miners. In this paper, based on an coal spontaneous combustion event happened in a Chinese gassy mine, the fire ratios derived from the gas composition data obtained through the tube bundle mine atmospheric monitoring system are used in determining the fire status. A comprehensive and collaborative fire extinguishing effort including inert gas injection, underground pressure balance, and sealing enhancement are made to control the fire progress. Simultaneously, the effects of such works to control the spontaneous combustion event have also been quantified using the fire ratios to justify again. Finally, the danger of coal spontaneous combustion in gob is eliminated, and the longwall panel is successfully re-opened for normal production.

Summary Records of the past show that the first mineral production in what is now the Province of Manitoba consisted of salt, obtained about the year 1800 by the evaporation of brine. Also at an early time in our history, the Ordovician limestone at St. Andrews Locks, East Selkirk, and other localities was quarried for use as building scone in the construction of forts and fur trading posts. Both salt and building stone are still produced in Manitoba, although not from the original sources. In addition, there is now a substantial production of a variety of other industrial minerals and their products such as lime, crushed stone, gypsum, peat moss, and bentonite. The annual dollar value of production of the industrial mineral industry in Manitoba is today greater than at any time in our past and is derived from a greater variety of products. At the present time, exclusive of the various gravel pits operated by the Provincial Department of Public Works, twenty companies operating thirty-four separate pits, quarries, or mines are producing industrial mineral raw materials in Manitoba. This paper attempts to outline the development of the industry from its start about 1800 to the present, giving general information on the various materials produced. Some suggestions regarding the possibilities of establishing new industries based on other raw materials are given at the end of the paper.

THIS chapter and the one following deal with the heat quantities involved in open-hearth steelmaking, including the thermal efficiency of the furnace as a generator of high-temperature heat, the heat storage in the steel and slag produced and in the furnace walls, and the heats of the various chemical reactions involved in combustion, in the formation of slag, and the refining of steel. The fundamental laws to be considered are the simplification of the first two ' laws of thermodynamics as applied to problems involving sensible and potential (or latent) heat only 1. Heat input equals heat outflow plus storage. 2. Heat may be transferred only from a hotter body to a colder one. The first of these laws relates to the various heat quantities or the "heat balance" of the process. No one has as yet made an open-hearth heat balance that came out almost exactly balanced, and we assume that the cause lies in the difficulties of accurate temperature and flow-rate measurements at the high temperatures involved and the inherent complexities of flow distribution, air leakage, etc., present in any real, open-hearth furnace system. Some idea of the magnitude of the heat quantities involved can be obtained- by a brief, crude outline of the heat balance of a 90-ton heat of steel. We will assume a 60 to 70 per cent hot-metal charge in a fairly fast working and only moderately efficient furnace, burning fuel oil, with a fuel consumption of around 4 million B.t.u. per net ton. of ingots produced. The time from start of charge to tap is 9 hr. During this period, the oil burned represents 360 million B.t.u., and the sensible heat in the preheated air at the port ends is 117 million B.t.u. so that the total heat input at the ports is 477 million B.t.u. Heat stored in the steel and slag at the end of the heat, plus the various amounts absorbed by certain bath reactions, amounts to a total of 195 million B.t.u., but 120 million of this is supplied by the heat in the hot metal and by various heat--evolving reactions in the bath, so that only 75 million B.t.u. need be supplied to the bath by the flame.

A QUARTER century ago this country was producing an extraordinary quantity of iron and steel, with a decisive influence on the outcome of the first World War. Today this country is again demonstrating its industrial capacity with telling results. If this lapse of time has confirmed the opinion that man learns little from experience with respect to human relationships, at least we can derive some consolation from the knowledge that in the same period we have made huge strides industrially, and particularly in the steel industry. The differences represented by 25 years are striking, and have resulted from a multitude of changes that have contributed to the present-day high state of our pig iron and steel manufacture.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines applied its mine fire diagnostic method to an abandoned anthracite mine fire site in Carbondale, Lackawanna County, P A. The technique to locate fires in abandoned coal mines and coal refuse piles includes the determination of hydrocarbon concentrations in mine gases, the imposition of an underground gas flow direction, and use of a surface mapping method, to define heated and cold zones in underground coal strata. The heated zones at Carbondale were characterized by elevated methane concentrations. The results of 25 communication tests were analyzed to define 2 large (approximately 100 by 250 ft) and 5 small, isolated heated zones. An approximate correlation existed between the location of the heated zones and areas of anomalous snow melt. The correlation between the results of the diagnostic? test and subsurface temperatures was not significant.

The testing of a new method for measuring pellet-bed temperatures in the traveling-grate or shaft furnace is presented in this paper. This method, using silver-palladium alloy wires as indicators, overcomes disadvantages existing in the methods based on the use of thermocouples which are costly and time-consuming. The authors have developed and tested a new method for measuring pellet-bed temperatures in the traveling-grate or shaft turnace through the use of silver-palladium alloy wires as indicators. This method overcomes the disadvantages of existing methods, which, based on the use of thermocouples, are generally costly and time-consuming. For example, in the case of the traveling-grate furnace, the installation of an instrumented pellet, together with its attached thermocouples, requires stopping the furnace, with resulting loss of production time. As for temperature measurement in the shaft furnace by the existing method, the movement of the shuttle-car feeder seriously interferes with both the actual insertion and the resulting distribution of continuously fed thermocouples. The authors have overcome these difficulties by using, as temperature indicators, a range of silver-palladium alloy wires that can be easily recovered, after firing at any desired location in a pellet furnace. Silver-palladium wires having specific melting points from 2000°F to 2500°F are enclosed in ceramic capsules. Each capsule is placed in a ni-chrome wire basket filled with a sample of green pellets, the baskets being the means for recovering the capsule after firing. After the encapsulated wires have been exposed to the firing cycle, the alloy wires are examined to determine the maximum temperatures attained by the pellet sample. This method gives accurate, rapid determinations of maximum temperatures attained during pellet induration in either the traveling-grate or shaft furnace The new method has the following advantages over existing methods: 1) it is less expensive; 2) no furnace downtime is required; 3) the testing units can, be made in quantity in advance; 4) measurements can be made in rapid succession at all desired locations; 5) measurements of maximum firing temperatures are more accurate; 6) on the basis of points 4 and 5, the new method gives a more reliable picture of the correlation of pellet quality, petrographic textures and maximum temperatures, thus providing a more effective quality-control tool. A disadvantage of the method is, of course, that the measurements are not continuous and only maximum temperatures are determined. TEST PROGRAM Preparation of Materials: CALIBRATION OF ALLOYS - In the following discussion the term "bead point" (see Fig. 1) refers to the temperature at which each alloy begins to melt and form a bead. Fig. 2 gives the bead point curve for silver-palladium alloys. "There are numerous factors that affect open stope stability and often result in falls of ground. These falls of ground can be attributed to factors such as beam failure due to a larger than normal roof area (hydraulic radius too large), adverse ground conditions, seismicity, the stress-strain environment, absence of support, and poor drill-and-blast practices. The effect of time on the stability of open stopes is sometimes underestimated and is relatively unknown, especially on Target Mine. Actual data was collected from open stopes at Target and analysed to show the effect of time on open stope stability. The benefits of this analysis will include improved understanding of time-dependent failure, which can assist in reducing dilution and the risk of sterilization of future mining blocks. IntroductionTarget Mine is situated adjacent to the town of Allanridge, some 20 km from Welkom in South Africa’s Free State Province, and is the most northerly mine in the Welkom Goldfields area (Figure 1). The mine consists of a single surface shaft system with a sub-shaft (Target 1C shaft) and a decline. Ownership was attained by Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited in May 2004 (Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited, 2010). Before discussing the selection of open stopes for the back-analyses, a brief explanation of open stoping as practiced at Target Mine will be given. The orebody is some 180 m in thickness and 270 m wide and comprises multiple reefs overlying one another. The 180 m thick reef package is termed the Eldorado Reefs, as shown in Figure 2. The Eldorado Reefs suboutcrop against the Dreyerskuil Reefs, as shown in Figure 3. The dip of the reef varies from as low as 10° in the west to 75° in the east.Compared with most Australian and Canadian open stoping mining operations, Target Mine is unique. In most Australian and Canadian mining operations the hangingwall and footwall of the open stopes comprise waste rock, and the orebody dips relatively steeply. Due to the depth of Target Mine, some 2300 m to 2500 m below surface, a destress slot (Figure 4) is mined to create an artificial, shallow mining environment whereby the field stress is managed and kept at values of around 60 MPa. The destress slot comprises a narrow tabular stope with an average width of 1.5 m, and is mined on the Dreyerskuil Reefs.At Target Mine the hangingwall, sidewalls, and footwall of the open stopes all comprise reef of different grades, except for the EA1, where the EB footwall is waste rock. If a stope, for example, is mined alongside an existing old stope, the western sidewall of this stope will consist of backfill. The general mining direction of open stopes is from the lowest position of the reef on the west, progressing up towards the east as shown in Figure 5."

In recent years the Federal Bureau of Mines tested and approved four new types of self-contained breathing apparatus and a facepiece designed for use with the McCaa 2-hour self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus. The Bureau also developed and perfected a battery-powered lifeline telephone for use in mine rescue and recovery operations. Some of this equipment is described in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7413.4/ This publication is a revision of information Circular 7413 and presents pertinent information on more recently developed mine rescue equipment. The breathing apparatus described herein are 1/2- and 3/4-hour sell-contained types of much simpler design than the conventional 2-hour self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus ordinarily used by mine rescue crews; however, it is just as important to select rescue crews carefully and to train them properly in the use, care, and limitations of the newer types of apparatus as well as the older, established types, if the newer types are to be used safely. The Bureau of Mines recommends that 1/2- and 3/4-hour self-contained breathing apparatus be used only as auxiliary equipment in mine rescue and recovery work and that the capabilities and limitations of the apparatus should be well understood by those who wear the equipment.

THE study of diamond drill results at the Lake Athabaska property of Athona Mines, Limited, and the co-ordination of information secured, has demanded extensive application of methods for interpreting true conditions, both structurally and from the point of view of ore outlook. This work was in charge of a capable engineer, who, as the result of exhaustive study of the drill cores, has been able to issue maps and plans exceeding the expectations of the majority of engineers and geologists who visited the field during the past summer (1935); that is, having in view the fact that staking of the property had been completed but a few months beforehand and that geological conditions were practically unknown up to the time drilling began in April. The following pages present an outline of the work of the assay and engineering offices in co-ordinating and interpreting the results of the drilling. The writer desires to acknowledge the suggestions offered by A.P. Beavan, geologist and engineer at Athona Mines, whom he assisted during the drilling campaign, and also the co-operation of the drilling contractor's employees. The geological map, mine plans, and forms accompanying the paper are from the Company's engineering office files.

The development of welded pipe has paralleled the general industrial development and, in particular, that of the petroleum industry. The petroleum industry's need for high-grade, economical pipeline material to make many 'of its projects feasible has been a significant factor in the development of light-wall, high-grade welded pipe. The modern welding processes, such as high-frequency, electric resistance, flash, submerged arc, etc., have some basically different characteristics. The modern high-frequency weld mill is a complex of specialized equipment that is integrated into a production unit. Each component in the unit performs a specific function in the production process. Quality control must be built into the process on an operating basis and, to maintain the quality required for pipeline standards, must be more than a policing operation. The further development of the welded pipe industry will be determined by changing and increasing demands. The technical and economic views and requirements that will influence the development have to be resolved.

The geochemical interpretation of results of statistical analysis of published multi-element stream sediment data from southwest and northern New Brunswick is presented. Element concentrations in southwest New Brunswick are low and comparable to element concentrations in background areas in northern New Brunswick. Deposits of copper and nickel are indicated in southwest New Brunswick. Anomalous element concentrations occur in several areas in northern New Brunswick and the elements most commonly associated with these anomalies are Cu, Pb, Zn, As and Ag; and also Mo, Wand Sb. Bedrock geology greatly influences element concentrations and may cause false anomalies. Manganese has a pronounced effect on the dispersion patterns of Co and also Zn, Mo, Pb, As, Ba and Ni. Nickel and Cr are strongly sympathetically related and this association is independent of bedrock type.

The goal of mine planning is to determine "the best" strategy to exploit an ore deposit during its workable life. Such strategy must be consistent with the objectives of the company and must be subject to the contraints imposed by economical, physical and geological conditions. Mine planning process may be broken down into three categories, according to the planning horizon: Long range, Short range and Operational. The shorter the scope of planning, the higher the level of details and the lower the degree of freedom associated to each plan. A long range plan defines the economic limit of mining at the mining life end of the deposit; it also can be used as an aid in the evaluation of the economical potential of a mineral deposit and as a guide for short range plans.

IINTRODUCTION Widespread activities in precious metal projects in the western U.S., Australia, Canada and other parts of the world have opened a flood-gate of consul- ting expertise to aid and accelerate the development process. Utilization of outside expertise has taken on many shapes and forms that have in some instances actually "decelerated" or "retarded" project progress. Small mines are especially vulnerable to apparent false-starts and misdirections, be- cause of their generally lower capital commitments, shorter lead times and limited mineral in-house expertise. Mine development for small mines requires fundamental approaches by knowledgeable consultants that are timely and cost-efficient and in line with accelerated development, if they are to be successful. The development process is obviously that process which brings a given deposit into production. Or, put another way, the process comprises all activities, decisions and commitments which take place from the moment an authorizing entity (usually a board of directors) com- mits to development and production (usually on the basis of a final feasibility study) until the first ton of ore is processed to a saleable product. The activities, decisions and commitments over a development period--such a period can range from as short as a year or less to as long as 5 years or more--are many, highly varied, and often interdependent. The development period is also particularly risky, not only because of the varied and interdependent decisions and commitments, but also because of capital demand amounts. Delays in the development process are thus particularly costly - sometimes so costly that small and often undercapitalized mining companies, failing to reach production and a cash flow within a planned period, face, if not bankruptcy, at least severe equity dilution or particularly onerous and restrictive covenants on additional loan financing. It therefor behooves especially small mining companies to examine ways to accelerate development. By doing so, the development process may actually meet planned scheduling. The development process generally comprises environmental impact studies completion, final engineering, permit- ting, financing, equipment and machinery procurement, contractor selection and construction -- such activities largely being overlapping. The paper addresses what the small mines operator or the small mining company can do with consulting firms to accelerate development. By "small mines" is meant open pit operations of 2000 tpd or less and underground operations of 500 tpd or less. By "consulting firms" is meant entities who do not possess an engineering and construction capability, such as Derry Michener Booth & Wahl, Pincock Allen & Holt, Behre Dolbear-Riverside, etc. The paper concentrates on gold projects. PRIORITY CONSIDERATIONS Of the items listed in the previous paragraph which comprise the development process, the two which most consistently appear to cause delays are permitting and financing. The former's delays can be due to political overtones and thus the delays may not be reasonably foreseeable. The latter's delays are most often due to inadequate preparation, and thus are avoidable. For the reason stated above, and considering that financing is fundamental to all of the activities which constitute the development process, the paper focuses on financing as the priority item which can most assist in accelerating or retarding the development process.

Reservoir properties including porosity and permeability distributions in longwall coal mine gobs have direct application to modeling the flow patterns and gas distributions in the gobs. Proper assessment of these distributions is required to assess gob gas hazards such as spontaneous combustion and explosive methane mixtures and to optimize gob gas venthole operation and nitrogen inertization. Determining the reservoir properties is difficult given that the gob is inaccessible and direct measurements cannot be easily taken. Several techniques had been used by previous researchers and will be discussed. This paper will present the methodology used to model the gob compaction by simulating the sequential extraction of coal. Two Western US coal mines were used for case studies. By determining volumetric strain, the porosity and permeability distributions in the gob can be calculated. The geo-mechanical model predicts an axisymmetric volumetric strain distribution with a steeper slope near the start-up room and a shallower slope near the active face.

"GeneralA NOT INCONSIDERABLE proportion of the Canadian economy is dependent on the coal mining industry. This is particularly true of the eastern portion of Canada and especially so of the ( authors') province of Nova Scotia. Much has been said about the trying economic straits of the coal industry in Nova Scotia ( 1), faced, as it is, with difficult mining problems, with considerable distance from large markets, and with •competition from other (and usually foreign) fuels. It is of particular interest, at this time, therefore, to discuss one of the larger outlets for coal -that of the production of metallurgical coke.Scope of PaperWhile the title of this paper indicates that it deals with Metallurgical Coke in Canada, the authors beg leave to treat the Canadian industry very briefly and to deal specifically with coal, •coke, and smelting problems with which they are familiar, namely, the operation of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation in the Sydney, N.S., area. IN the third year of war, geophysical oil exploration broke all records to keep pace with the demand for increased reserves. Geophysical prospecting for strategic and other minerals also grew in scope. The trend of geophysical oil exploration throughout the war is indicated in Fig. 1. This figure resembles the one presented in the last annual review issue of M&M (February 1944, p. 62), corrected for data on-operations in the last months of 1943 and extended into 1944. The average number of geophysical oil prospecting crews in the field in 1944 was 451, whereas the total in 1943 was 340. An upward trend in the use of all geophysical methods is clearly evident throughout the year. Seismic operations were 67 per cent, gravimeter surveys 28 per cent, and other methods 5 per cent of the total. Seismic reflection and refraction crews increased 181/2 per cent over the 1943 average, gravimeter operations increased 73 per cent, and other methods gained 92 per cent. The increase in seismic and gravimeter operations, particularly the latter, is probably due to an increased production of equipment and the organization of new service companies. Miscellaneous methods gained largely through a revival of magnetometer work, and an increase in the use of torsion balances and electrical equipment. In comparison with the prewar average of 1941, it is noteworthy that seismic operations increased 58 per cent, gravimeter operations 88 per cent, and miscellaneous other methods gained as much as 283 per cent. Unfortunately the expansion in the number of geophysical crews does not indicate a proportionate increase in efficiency or in areal coverage, as will be brought out later.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of gamma radiation on materials and chemical reactions to obtain information that could be of value in modern metallurgical practices . Various combinations of metals and their ores and compounds were irradiated in attempts to effect reactions that might be applicable in the extraction and separation of metal values from minerals and The types of reactions studied included complexing of salts , decomposition of hydrated salts , metal chlorination reactions , leaching of ores and minerals , halogen exchange , and various reducing reactions . All irradiations were performed at the Materials Testing Reactor Gamma Facility of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission at Idaho Falls , Idaho . Spent fuel elements were utilized as the source of the gamma radiation . Some irradiation - induced changes , ranging from mere color change to participation in chemical reactions , were noted . The greatest value of these investigations , however , was the experience acquired , which should be valuable in future explorations of similar nature .

Foi estudado a influência do aporte térmico, de soldagem, sobre a resistência balística de um aço de alta dureza (HHA) temperado e revenido (HHA), utilizando o processo de soldagem a arco. O aço HHA, temperado e revenido, foi caracterizado por análise metalográfica, ensaios mecânicos e ensaios balísticos. Os resultados mostram que o aporte térmico da soldagem teve influência significativa nas propriedades mecânicas da Zona de Fusão (ZF) e da Zona Termicamante Afetada (ZTA), ocasionando mudanças na resistência balística. O melhor desempenho balístico do material soldado foi obtido para a soldagem de baixo aporte térmico.

This report describes a program to evaluate the feasibility of determining roof features which occur in United States coal mines from changes in bolting machine drilling parameters. The ultimate purpose of this effort is the development of an instrumented roof bolting machine which can detect hazardous roof conditions and/or indicate when the existing roof control plan is inadequate. A survey of hazardous conditions occurring in United States coal mines is included, along with the slang expressions for these conditions, and their relative degree of hazard. Specific machine parameters are identified for detecting the specific roof conditions. Measurement concepts are proposed using readily available instrumentation in most cases. Various systems are evaluated and tradeoffs presented. An implementation plan is proposed for developing a prototype system and using it in an operating coal mine.
