Although a general relationship exists between the two criteria used to measure sharpness of separation -error area and probable error -they sometimes give quite different appraisals of a particular washing operation. Error area takes into account how the entire raw coal was treated, whereas probable error reflects only how the material of intermediate density was separated, ignoring completely the recovery of clean coal and the rejection of heavy impurity. Error area is thus more reliable for general use. In heavy-medium cleaning, sharpness of separation decreases with increase in separating density, but ordinarily the change is not great enough to affect the yield and ash content of washed coal measurably. Therefore, distribution curves for heavy-medium units can be transposed from one separating density to another, at least in the range of separating densities ordinarily used in the United States.

A simplified method for evaluating specific surface of porous media is described. The theory takes as its point of departure a previous statistical method. Due to its simplicity, it is considered that the proposed method has certain advantages over methods currently used. By making some simplifications, the procedure for estimating specific surface is reduced to superposing, on an enlarged reproduction of a section of the sample to be analyzed, an evenly spaced grid and counting the number of intersections of the grid lines with the perimeter of pores. An indirect test of the theory is presented and the advantages of the method are discussed. INTRODUCTION The specific surface of a porous medium, defined as the surface area of the pores per unit bulk volume, is an important parameter with regard to flow of fluids through porous materials. In particular, it has long been recognized that specific surface is closely related to permeability. Since the internal surface of any porous material is extremely complex, the measurement of specific surface can only be accomplished by indirect means. It is considered that the best method' in current use for determining specific surface is the statistical method of Chalkley, Cornfield and Parka who originally applied it for estimating volume-surface ratios of morphologic components, such as cells or nuclei. This method will be outlined later. A method which has been used extensively in determining specific surface is based on the adsorption of a vapor by the internal surface of porous media. However, this method does not yield the surface pertinent to fluid flow, since it includes the tiny molecular interstices which do not influence the permeability of the porous material.' This method has been employed by Brooks and Purcell measure internal surface area of sedimentary rocks. The Kozeny equation, which relates the specific surface to the permeability of a porous medium, has found wide use in determination of specific surface. However, the KOzeny equation is not strictly correct. Large discrepancies have been found between theory and experiments.' Consequently. the specific surface estimated by this method is subject to serious uncertainties. Finally, there are other methods for specific surface measurements which are based upon a variety of physical and chemical properties: the heat conduction by a gas, ionic adsorption phenomena and direct chemical reactions of the surface with other substances. This paper describes a simplified statistical method for determining specific surface of porous materials. It is considered that, due to its simplicity, it has certain advantages over the methods presently used. For its validity, it is required that the porous structure of the material under study be of a spatially random nature. This is not a serious limitation since the naturally occurring porous media have this characteristic. THEORY The method proposed in this paper takes as its point of departure the interesting result obtained by Chalkley et al The method shows that if a line of length r is dropped repeatedly at random over a section of a porous medium, and counts are made of the number of times the two end points fall within pore areas (denoted by h for "hits") and the number of times the line intersects the perimeter of pores (denoted by c for "cuts"), then in a very large number of throws where S is the internal surface of the sample (surface of pores) and V, the volume of the pores (Fig. 1). With the coming of the month of 'October the various sections are beginning active work for the winter. The Colorado, Washington, Montana, and New York Sections are all doing good work in raising funds for the hospital bed at Rheims which is to be a memorial to the members of the A. I. M. E. who gave their lives in the great war. We hope that all the other sections will begin to work with this object in view and will make even a better record than they did with the Belgian Relief Fund. It was with much regret that the President, Mrs. James F. Kemp, and the Secretary, Mrs. Sidney J. Jennings, were obliged to forego the pleasure of attending the Chicago meeting in September. They were, however, ably represented by Mrs. Arthur S. Dwight who gave an informal talk after which was formed the Illinois Section, which has our best wishes for all success-" Over the top and the best of luck!"

The primary objective of this final phase of Contract No. H0133004 was to provide a description of all experimental assemblies and procedures used throughout this project in such a detail as to permit duplication of the tests in any other laboratory. A further objective was to summarize and evaluate all results generated throughout the duration of this program and to tabulate all the materials and data in such a manner as to allow this report to be used as a reference index for specific compositions or groups of compositions regarding potential hazards arising from their use .in underground coal mining operations. The report also contains an updated survey of the literature on thermal oxidative degradation of compositions investigated under this contract.

The Monument Valley and White Canyon districts are in northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah. Exploration and mining for uranium has been conducted in these districts since the late 1940's. In July 1965, ore reserves plus ore production at 174 properties were approximately 3.3 million tons of ore containing about 19 million pounds U3O8, of which about 10 per cent remained in reserves. The two largest mines, Monument No. 2 and Happy Jack, together account for about 45 per cent of the sum of production and reserves. Approximately half the deposits in these districts contain less than 1000 tons of ore. Nearly 5000 feet of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic sedimentary rocks, mainly continental in origin, are exposed in these districts. All the important uranium deposits are in the Shinarump, the basal member of the Chinle Formation of Triassic age. The Shinarump lies on a widespread unconformity. It is composed of fluvial sediments, generally less than 100 feet thick, that were deposited by streams flowing from a source to the south. Most of the deposits are in an arcuate belt, convex to the west. This belt, 3 to 12 miles wide, extends from Monument Valley northward nearly 130 miles. It is along the western flank of the ancient Monument Valley-Monticello upland, an area that was slightly uplifted at the beginning and again at the end of deposition of the Shinarump. Erosion and subsequent reworking of the Shinarump sediments in the vicinity of this upland are postulated to have made possible the transportation, in solution, of the uranium contained in these sediments. The soluble uranium probably was carried by migrating ground water into sites favorable for precipitation in Shinarump beds bordering the upland. Thus, the original very small amounts of dispersed uranium in the early Shinarump sediments were accreted in the favorable belt where the accumulations of carbonaceous plant remains and their decay products provided a persistent reducing environment.

By fine-grinding you increase the surface, and by adding some agent like sawdust or small pieces of wood, or cotton stalks, the charge is made porous., However, the fineness of the ore and of the coal makes the charge, a very poor conductor of heat, and therefore it has to be briquetted. 0. A shortage of anthracite for home heating indicates the necessity of using other fuels for this purpose; low-volatile bituminous, or "soft" coal is the most feasible supplementary fuel, either burned alone or when mixed with anthracite. Comparison of Bituminous Coal and Anthracite Whereas anthracite is clean, burns without smoke, and requires little attention, bituminous coal is dusty, tends to burn with a smoky flame, and forms coke in the fire pot that must be broken up to maintain a continuous high output of heat. When properly fired, however, bituminous coal responds more quickly than anthracite to changes in damper settings and consequently can supply more heat in a short time. It is generally less expensive and usually contains less ash than anthracite.

Classifications of Ni-Cu deposits are based on petrology, geochemistry and the geotectonic setting of host igneous bodies (Naldrett and Cabri, 1976; Besson et al, 1979; Nadrett, 1989). The four major classes in Naldrett's (1989) division rest on the geotectonic setting of the igneous complexes and the classes are further subdivided on the basis of the petrology and geochemistry of the intrusion. A more common subdivision of mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks is based on the environment of rock-forming processes, endogenic or exogenic, intrusive or extrusive, and this subdivision has been applied, in practice, to the classification of sulphide Ni-Cu deposits, too. The extrusive deposits, Class I in Naldrett's (1989) classification, are directly related to volcanic processes whereas all the others refer to the intrusive environment. This paper looks at the differences between the extrusive and intrusive groups of Ni-Cu deposits and presents generic, genetic and structural features of the intrusive group.

(written discussion*).There is one feature of the fire-refining of electrolytic copper which I believe should be mentioned when the relation of oxygen content to the "pitch" or "set" of refined copper is under discussion; that is, the segregation of impurities. Variation of "pitch" or "set" is frequently noted in castings of different shapes, cast at the same time from the same furnace, though the oxygen content remains identical. For instance, it is possible to cast two wire-bars in the same shaped molds from the same ladleful of copper, the one 2 in. thick showing a good level set, the other, 4 in. thick, being overpoled. Also, when two bars are cast of the same weight and at the same time from the same furnace, one bar in a copper mold at the proper temperature, the other in a mold that has been allowed to get overheated, the bar in the hot mold will show

Because of the high economic value associated with small improvements in the operating performance of mineral processing plants, innovations in instrumentation, stabilization and expert control systems have been an ever-present part of the landscape in plants throughout the world since the I 960s. Expert control systems are computer programs that continuously monitor plant conditions; contain "expert knowledge" concerning the process, equipment and operational knowledge; and make timely recommendations for new process set points or even directly change the process set points to achieve desired management goals. Early rudimentary expert control systems first appeared in the early 1970s. They have grown from small, experimental but ambitious projects in which single unit operations were controlled to plant-wide systems that include technologies used in the U.S. space shuttle program. Experiences and results of applying these systems throughout the world will be explained discussed and analyzed. Typical results will be outlined and the use of expert control in the future will be projected.

"IntroductionA STUDY of the trace elements in the ash •of coals from nine seams in the Sydney coalfield, Nova Scotia, was undertaken at the suggestion of Dr. W. A. Bell, Geological Survey of Canada, as a part of a larger study of these and other Nova Scotia coals being made by the Geological Survey and the Nova Scotia Department of Mines under the direction of Dr. P. A. Hacquebard.The main purpose of this investigation has been to •determine if a knowledge of the trace element distribution might be of assistance in the recognition of individual seams, the distinction of which is not always easy or positive in folded and faulted strata by ordinary stratigraphic and structural means.The study has been so conducted as to afford information on the variation of trace elements in individual petrographic intervals or divisions in each of the seams examined, intervals determined by Dr. Hacquebard on the basis of their banded ingredients, vitrain, clarain, durain, fusain, etc, as observed under the microscope in polished sections. The results, as well, indicate the trace element composition of the coals of the area as a whole, and quantitative data for fifteen elements are given, along with concentrations of thirteen other elements, stated in terms of intensity ratios. Data on distribution of germanium, though considered here along with other elements, are dealt with elsewhere*."

A comprehensive field study has been carried out to measure the background air quality status and identify the air pollution sources from opencast mines around a heritage site in India. Air quality modeling has been carried out to envisage dust concentration due to the existing and closed mines in the region. The predicted total PM10 and PM2.5 levels at the selected receptor locations ranged from 86.39 to 194.89 and from 34.82 to 99.55 µg/m³, respectively.

Titanium forms several compounds with oxygen and also is able to dissolve interstitially about 33 atomic percent of oxygen. Starting with titanium dioxide, reduction becomes increasingly difficult as oxygen is removed; and the final step, be reduction of the titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions, is by far the most difficult. The possibility of reducing titanium oxide, or of purifying titanium containing oxygen, by treatment with certain more volatile metals has been a subject of considerable interest. Theoretical appraisal of the limitations of this possibility, however, has been hampered by lack of adequate information on the thermodynamic properties of the titanium-oxygen solutions. The purpose of the present work was to remedy this difficulty by expanding the thermodynamic knowledge regarding these solutions. The experimental work involved three types of calorimetry and furnished the following information: (1) Heats of formation of 11 titanium-oxygen solutions, in the range of 0 to 10 wt.-percent oxygen, were determined at 298.15° K. As a byproduct, an improved value of the heat of formation of rutile was obtained, which, in turn, led to improved values of the heats of formation of the lower titanium-oxygen compounds. (2) Low-temperature heat-capacity data and entropies at 298.15°K in were determined for 2 representative titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions. (3) High-temperature heat-content data were obtained for 2 titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions to about 1,600° K.

"THIS PAPER will trace the work done in bringing the Munro underground ""A"" •Orebody into production to replace the open pit, which was scheduled to be completed early in 1959. Included will be an outline of the exploration work and early planning, and of the final decisions on mining methods. Some of the more detailed work will be described and reasons will be given for the decisions made regarding development work, mine ventilation, ground support, and equipment. Brief mention will be made of open pit operations, as these have had some influence on underground development. Also, some of the main geological features of the ore occurrence will be de-scri0bed, as these had to be taken into consideration when making decisions on ore development and mining methods.LOCATION AND HISTORYhe Munro mine of Canadian Johns-Manville is in Ontario, approximately 50 miles east of Timmins and 40 miles west of the Que-bec-Ontari-0 boundary. The producing orebody is in the southwestern part of Munro township. Property controlled by the Company extends nortl1westerly about 2¥2 miles into Beatty township, on which two other interesting asbestos-bearing zones have been partially expl-0red. Active exploration work on the property was started in March, 194.9, and continued until the summer of 1950."

In this paper, the authors present a typical mine profitability model. The method of generating system moments is used to examine the sensitivity of the profitability function to changes in the dependent variables, and to express the expected risk associated with undertaking the project in a predicted economic and technical environment. Profitability of a mining venture is a function of many variables ore grade, capital and operating costs, milling efficiency, ore reserve tonnage and annual tonnage, equity - loan structure, tax regime, etc. Estimates of the expected value and the variance of the profitability function are obtained by calculating the partial derivatives of the function with respect to the dependent variables, using the Taylor series expansion method to the second order. Sensitivity analysis is carried out by examining the effects of each variable on the profitability function, which is determined by the magnitude of the product of its partial derivative and variance. An appropriate probability density function, based on the expected value and the variance of the profitability function, is assumed to estimate the expected risk associated with the project. This expected risk is a measure of the area under the profitability density function below the appropriate, selected discount rate or the cut-off net present value (NPV). The results are compared with those obtained by using the Monte Carlo simulation technique, and they show that either of the two methods could be used to evaluate the probability of project failure or success with no significant difference.

A pesar de los importantes recursos que contiene el yacimiento, las bajas recuperaciones (alrededor del 40 %) obtenidas en pruebas metalúrgicas hacían inviable el proyecto El Toro, motivo por el cual se formó un equipo multidisciplinario con la misión de maximizar la recuperación. El equipo logró caracterizar detalladamente litologías, alteraciones, mineralización y contaminantes, así como definir las unidades geometalúrgicas (UGM), que permitieron la realización de más de 6 000 pruebas, gracias a las que se logró identificar las variables significativas que favorecen la recuperación, así como conocer las características físicas del mineral. El resultado de este trabajo de investigación incrementó significativamente la recuperación (se superaron valores del 70%) y permitió que el proyecto pase a su fase operativa con un horizonte de 8 años.

Neste estudo, foi analisado um segmento de perfil em “U” que rompeu em serviço. O perfil compunha uma estrutura metálica em treliça que sustentava uma bandeja de construção civil. Foram realizadas análises de fratura, análises de caracterização do material e estudo de rigidez do perfil. O perfil rompeu por sobrecarga estática porque foi instalado do lado inverso. Isto desfavoreceu a rigidez da estrutura.
