Many gold producing states are requiring rinsing of spent heaps to render the leached ore compatible with the environment and are placing reatrictiona on effluent pH, cyanide, and metals concentrations. Parameters which may affect efficient rinsing of heaps have been investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in laboratory column studies. Rinse profiles for cyanide, metals, and pH as a function of the volume of water passed through the spent ore are presented. Fresh water rinsing of spent ore in columns showed that rinsing of cyanide was not affected by the rinse solution application rate. Interrupted rinsing with a rest period between applications reduced the volume of water required to meet effluent cyanide concentrations. Chemical oxidation of the effluent with recycle of the rinse solutions reduced effluent cyanide concentrations and the volume of waste solution generated. Water rinsing was not successful in reducing the alkalinity of the cement agglomerated ore. A dilute acid solution had to be applied after cyanide removal to reduce effluent pH levels to specified limits.

Estes clusters prejudicam o fluxo da carga e a permeabilidade do leito. A fim de limitar o tamanho destes aglomerados o forno MIDREX dispõe de três conjuntos de quebradores localizados em diferentes posições do forno após a redução da carga. A interação entre clusters e esses quebradores, entretanto, pode também prejudicar o fluxo da carga e aumentar a geração de finos. O trabalho utilizou o método dos elementos discretos (DEM) para avaliar as energias e forças resultantes da interação entre os clusters formados e os quebradores. A descrição dos clusters foi realizada usando o bonded-particle model, disponível no EDEM. Simulações mostraram que a presença de clusters altera as forças e velocidades no entorno dos quebradores que tenderiam a aumentar a geração de finos no reator.

This paper describes the circuit simulations based on SPICE of the SDI Electronic Detonator System at the system level. SDI is launching the Electronic Detonator System with a robust serial protocol exhibiting great ease in field usability and deployment. Programmable delay time with increment of 1 ms up to 10s is possible. Bus length of up to 2 km containing 1600 detonators can be utilized. This system was analyzed using SPICE simulations and an Excel-based firing model spreadsheet. The effects of wire diameter, resistivity, detonator leakage characteristics, blasting array topology (lumped, linearly distributed or branched) were simulated using the firing model. Such spreadsheet is instrumental in determining the blasting topology of any given detonator number and bus wire diameter or resistivity. Initial simulation results were interactively coupled back into making the serial protocol more robust during typical mining conditions.

A WIDE variety of metalliferous deposits in Peru shows a close and consistent relationship to intrusive and extrusive igneous rdcks. This relationship furnishes a clue to the comp(osition of ore-bearing fluids and to the timing in separation of these fluids from differentiation magma Conclusions presented here are based on ten years' study of a large number of metalliferous deposits in Peru. The Buick Concentrator represents state-of- the-art technology in automated digital process control operation utilizing a centralized computer. The process control strategies implemented at Buick are no longer new to the industry but the successful application of these developments is still rather unique in North America. Productivity improvements, determined to be a direct result of the process control developments, are the primary topics of this paper. Emphasis is placed on metallurgical benefits including both lead and zinc recoveries, lead concentrate grade and reductions realized in reagent consumptions, operating costs and personnel. The productivity improvement discussion is preceded by a concentrator description and a brief history of the process control development at Buick. Current control strategies and future applications are presented afterward.

"Most new mining projects require an initial assessment of the locations and volumes of potential acid forming (PAF) waste that is likely to be moved and dumped in surface waste stockpiles. This requires sampling of the waste rock zones and submitting the samples for a series of tests. Key to the outcome of the waste characterisation process is obtaining sufficient samples that are representative of the various rock types both in number and spatial distribution.Various regulatory bodies throughout Australia and the rest of the world are currently struggling with how to define minimum amounts of sampling to achieve realistic estimates without imposing excessive costs and time constraints on a project.This paper addresses two aspects of the process: what constitutes a æsufficientÆ number of samples how to use those samples in determining volumes of likely PAF material.Geostatistical methods of characterising orebodies with large numbers of samples are routinely used in the mining industry by geologists and geostatisticians to estimate and classify Mineral Resources. In theory exactly the same methods can be used to estimate PAF waste locations and volumes.In practice the number and spatial distribution of dedicated PAF waste samples at feasibility stage is typically so small that it is almost impossible to estimate the spatial distribution of PAF material with any degree of confidence at all. Consequently, the common approach is to characterise a few samples from a lithological unit and then assume that they represent the unit as a whole. The history of surface mining is essentially that of mining coal, copper, and iron ores and the non- metallic minerals, i.e. clays, gypsum, phosphate rock, sand, gravel and stone. The accompanying table comparing world production with that of the U. S. indicates that two thirds of the 8.8 billion tons of ores mined throughout the world come from surface operation. Assuming that the stripping ratio for surface mining in the U. S. applies equally to world production, then over 21 billion tons of waste, or a total of nearly 27 billion short tons of material are mined annually in the world by surface methods. Several factors are significant indicators of economic and technologic trends in surface mining. Among these are increasing production, a shift in emphasis from underground to surface mining, a decline in the grade and quality of some crude materials and, with few exceptions, an increase in the productivity of labor.

THE RECENT and continuing activity in the Boundary district, British Columbia, makes the publication of this paper timely. The following description and discussions are based on two years' experience in the district as Field Manager and Geologist for Attwood Copper Mines, Limited. The Attwood project was organized by Dr. D. F. Kidd to re-examine the Boundary mining camp. Thanks are due to Dr. Kidd, both for his intelligent guidance during the project and for his permission to publish this paper. Much of the data and many of the interpretations presented are credited to the work of, and to discussion with, Dr. W. H. White, Consultant Geologist, who worked for two field seasons on the project. I WILL begin this presentation by citing the annual per capita use of copper in Canada. This is best calculated by taking refinery domestic sales, plus imports of the products of foreign fabricating mills (very little refinery copper is imported), and deducting the exports of Canadian mills. No attempt has been made to estimate the copper content of imports or exports of machinery, motors, etc., but the trade balance here is probably against Canada. In any event, we find that, though varying somewhat since the war, the estimated yearly per capita figure has reached a high of 18 pounds. This is practically on a par with the United States. The rest of the world uses an average of about 2 pounds per capita, yearly, though this includes some countries, such as Sweden, Germany and England, which consume much better than average quantities. It looks, therefore, as if the Canadian copper industry has not (as has been generally charged) been asleep after all.

A joint federal-provincial approach in gathering basic information from industry on mine production, concentrator operations and ore reserves, initiated during 1978, is a major step toward the goal of achieving better government-industry communication through a common data base. Information from questionnaires sent out by provincial governments is shared with the federal government; correct interpretation is ensured by mine visits conducted jointly by provincial and federal representatives. Initial focus is on nonferrous metal mines. The federal Department of Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) is responsible for a national analysis that is aimed at the early detection of worrisome developments-and their reasons-in the flow from resources to reserves and from reserves to supply of these metals. The heart of the national analysis is the annual construction of a "monitoring curve", showing each metal's aggregated mine production as it would decrease over time if no new reserves and production capacity were to be added from the year of analysis. For a given metal, a comparison of monitoring curves from year to year can reveal early signs of supply stagnation. In anyone year, a monitoring curve in conjunction with foreseen needs for Canadian mine output will show the production gap that would have to be filled from reserves and production capacity yet to be developed. The production gaps for copper, nickel, zinc and lead, the four leading base metals mined in Canada, are shown for the 20-year period ahead, in the context of production achieved during the past 20 years. It is shown that reserve levels commensurate with likely future production levels would require that average annual reserve additions during 1978-98 exceed the average annual additions during the preceding 20 years. Reserve levels of all four metals have declined in recent years. A review of significant discoveries in the last five years suggests that this fall in reserves is not the result of a lack of exploration successes, but of stagnation in development for various economic reasons.

The rules laid down by Peter von Rittinger in his classic Lehrbuch der Aufbereitungskunde (Berlin, 1867, p. 513) concerning the designing of dressing-works still possess authority for such works and their operation. Nevertheless, some modifications and additions suggested by practice may be of value at the present time. Rittinger says: "I. Choose the apparatus and machines which can be, under the existing con-' ditions, easily constructed and kept in running order!' This rule contemplates the construction of apparatus (mostly of wood) on the spot, with the command of good sbops and especially of good workmen in wood. But in many cases, particularly for the sake of a prompt supply, the construction of apparatus is now left to special manufactories, which pay more attention in the choice of materials to durability and strength than to easy manipulation and erection. "A low-grade nickel-bearing ore was pre-concentrated on a SB40 laboratory model Falcon Concentrator. Three size fractions, -212+125, -125+75 and -75 µm were tested with the intent to upgrade the nickel content by reducing their content of fine silica, which becomes amorphous during leaching. Separation of silica from nickel-bearing magnesium silicate minerals; hornblende, clinochlore and talc, was more efficient in the finer particle sizes, -125+75 and -75 µm, and at high G-forces. For these two size fractions, nickel was upgraded from 0.06 to 0.07%, with a reduction in silica content from 52.12 to 50.71%. Leaching of feed samples prior to pre-concentration resulted in the formation of amorphous silica, indicative of the presence of fine silica in the samples. Leaching of nickel from the -125+75 µm fraction increased with increasing G-force and feed pulp percent solids, while that of -75 µm was not influenced. The optimum nickel recovery was 15.68% to the Falcon underflow, using the feed size fraction of -75 µm, 30 G and a feed pulp solids content of 10% solids, after 120 minutes of treatment.INTRODUCTION A low-grade South African nickel-bearing ore with about 0.06% Ni was previously studied for atmospheric pressure acid leaching using sulphuric acid. The study was motivated by the continuing search for methods to treat of low-grade ores, which appear to be an increasingly important source of valuable metals as a result of a declining production from rich sulphide ores. Nickel is a base metal that is used as an alloy in steelmaking and chemical industries because of its resistance to corrosion (Haudet et al., 2015). Nickel laterite ores with grades lower than 1.50% Ni are considered to be complex ores, accounting for 70% of the global nickel reserves (MacCarthy et al., 2016). Their complex nature may be attributed to the indefinite mineralogy of these ores, in which nickel may occur in more than one mineral host. In some cases, nickel may be finely disseminated in the ore. The grade of such an ore and complex mineralogy do not justify the application of pyrometallurgical methods for extraction of nickel (Zhu et al., 2012). This suggests that there is a need for less expensive alternative methods of extraction. This study investigates the application of centrifugal gravity concentration, using the Falcon concentrator, followed by leaching to determine the effect of pre-concentration of the ore prior to extraction by atmospheric pressure leaching with sulphuric acid."

B. S. Crocker (Screened Ore Used for Fine Grinding at Lake Shore Mines, P. 499) was born in Toronto, Ont. and attended Saint Andrews College and University of Toronto. He received a B.A. and M.A. degree. He was graduated with honors and received a fellowship in metallurgy. Mr. Crocker did post-graduate research at University of Toronto from 1933 to 1934. He was employed by Beattie Gold Mines in 1933. He did research in milling at Lake Shore Mines from 1934 to 1936 and from 1936 to 1940 was head of experiment laboratory. At the present time he is mill superintendent with Lake Shore Mines at Kirkland Lake, Ont., Canada. Grinding, cyanidation, flotation and roasting are of special interest to him. He is a member of AIME. Mr. Crocker has presented several papers before C.I.M.M. and also holds membership in this society as well as Professional Engineers of Ontario. Skiing, yacht racing and photography are his favorite hobbies.

IF the tendency toward extending the scope of the workmen's compensation system to include life, health, accident, old age, and unemployment insurance for workers is not promptly altered, I believe there will be a complete breakdown of that system. This is not because of any objections, there may he to requiring industries to provide these additional forms of protection in whole or in part to their employees. It is rather because our workmen's compensation laws, their scale of benefits, and the administrative procedure under them are not adapted or suited to such situations. If the compensation principle is limited to its own proper sphere and is not enlarged so as to include all the ills that the flesh is heir to, it is practical, "workable, and beneficent. If it invades foreign realms, it is bound to grow into a veritable Frankenstein' which will harm principally those it 'is supposed to aid, and, at the same time, will promote waste, fraud, and Industrial demoralization. Compensation risks will become almost uninsurable; the cost to business will be intolerable; and the development of sound relief measures which will give to labor the protection now sought by the uneconomic device of enlarging the compensation law territory will be retarded.

An AFMAG survey was flown in 1968 over the Upper Nelson River area, Manitoba. The flight direction was northwest-southeast and flight spacing was 2 miles. In the Cross Lake Subprovince, AFMAG showed that an isolated peridotite outcrop was part of a dike that extended over 80 miles. Diabase dikes are not always marked by an anomaly, but isolated cross-overs, when used in conjunction with geological and magnetic data, permit their extrapolation. Anomalies coincide with areas of sulphide mineralization. In the Flin Fion Subprovince, known and unknown northeast-trending faults are detected. The Berry Creek fault was extended south through Tramping lake, then under the Paleozoic cover. Conductors were detected at, or near, the axes of major synclines within Amisk and Snow Group sediments. Granitic terranes have low conductivity and, because they are characterized by smooth AFMAG profiles, they can be delimited. AF.MAG is being recognized as a geophysical method that can aid geological mapping and interpretation. Its most important contribution to the geologist will be in regions where out-crops are sparse.

Chromate conversion coating is a process for making a complex layer at the surface of zinc galvanized steel which makes the metal more resistant to corrosion, especially at marine atmosphere, and increases the adhesiveness of color. In this work the influences of various compositions on commercial zinc galvanized steel sheet to the color of chromate conversion coating has been investigated at normal temperature and the factors that affect the control and optimization of the process have been determined. A bath composition of 20 g/liter Cr203 and 10 g/liter NaOH and a dipping time of 50 seconds at room temperature (25-30°C) make a desirable color of chromate coating. A slow agitation at a constant pH of I (with additions of NaOH or H2SO4) assures a constant bath condition and develops the color. This kind of coating has more corrosion resistance and this bath condition and composition are also more economical.

"Rock fall related accidents continue to occur in coal mines, although artificial support mechanisms have been used extensively [1]. Roof stability is primarily determined in many underground mines by a limited number of methods that often resort to subjective criteria. It is argued in this paper that stability conditions of mine roof strata, as a key factor in coal mines, must be determined by a survey which proactively investigates fundamental aspects.Failure of rock around the opening happens as a result of both high rock stress conditions and the presence of structural discontinuities. The properties of such discontinuities affect the engineering behavior of rock masses causing wedges or blocks to fall from the roof or slide out of the walls [2]. A practical rule based approach to assess the risk of a roof fall is proposed in the paper. The method is based on the analysis of structural data and the geometry and stability of wedges in underground coal mines. In this regard, an accident causing a huge collapse in a coal mine leading to four fatalities is illustrated by way of a case study. A comprehensive investigation of the hanging wall has been gathered through a systematic collection of evidence. The investigation results are then analyzed, and an interpretation of the evidence gathered is provided.For this purpose, horizontal and vertical profiles are prepared by geophysical methods to define the falling zone and its boundaries. The collapse is then modeled by the use of sophisticated computer programs in order to identify the causes of the accident and hence recommend corrective actions to prevent or minimize reoccurrence probability of similar accidents. The corrective measures are placed into a rule-based framework for the benefit of the mine operators.INTRODUCTIONRoof rock failure has generally been the most dangerous hazard for underground coal mining in the world. Failure of rock around shallow coal mine openings often results from loosening of blocks of rock on the weakened planes under the influence of gravity. This condition is not typically seen in large deep coal mines. There are a number of differences between large mechanized mines and small mines related to ground control [3]."

The Bureau of Mines investigated modified sulfur concretes as one part of a program for utilizing sulfur in construction materials. The use of modified sulfur was studied as a means of preventing the stressing action in the concretes caused by the allotropic transformation of sulfur on solidification. Unmodified sulfur concretes have been prepared that have compression, flexural, and tensile strengths equivalent or better than Portland concretes. However, most of these concretes have been vulnerable to deterioration by weathering, temperature fluctuations, and freeze-thaw cycling. The sulfur was modified by reaction with dicyclopentadiene or dipentene before use as an aggregate binder. Sulfur concretes and modified sulfur concretes were pre-pared from acidic and basic type aggregates. Physical properties of the optimum mixtures were determined and compared with each other and with Portland cement concretes. The best results were obtained by reacting sulfur with 5 pct dicyclopentadiene to prepare modified sulfur concretes. Field testing of the concretes are in progress. Present results show that modified sulfur concretes are superior to unmodified sulfur concretes and equal or better than Portland concretes in compressive, flexural, and tensile strengths. Long-term aging characteristics of both modified and unmodified sulfur concretes are being determined.
