Os métodos convencionais e os mais recentes de proteção contra a corrosão (revestimentos metálicos aplicados por eletrodeposição, deposição química (electroless), deposição química em fase vapor, deposição física de vapor e aplicação de tintas) empregados paras as ligas de aço-carbono também são empregados para as ligas à base de TR-Fe-B. Essa proteção torna-se necessária, uma vez que essas ligas possuem microestrutura muito mais complexa que as dos aços-carbono e apresentam em sua composição metais de terras raras os quais são intrinsicamente susceptíveis à corrosão. Os revestimentos utilizados são, no geral, constituídos de metais mais nobres do que as ligas, sendo por isso de extrema importância que sejam mantidos íntegros durante o manuseio individual dos ímãs e durante a sua montagem, ou, o posicionamento nos diversos dispositivos em que eles são empregados atualmente. O rompimento do revestimento implicará a diminuição da vida útil dos dispositivos.

The Ranger Project Area covers 78.6sq km and is approximately six km east-west by 14km north-south (Fig. 1). The area is known to con- tain two uranium orebodies, Ranger No. 1 and No. 3, two uranium occurrences, Anomalies 4 and 5 and three significant radon anomalies, Ranger 18, 19 and 48. The Ranger No. 1 and No. 3 Orebodies con- tain approximately 120 000 tonnes of U308 in highly chloritised metasediments of the Lower Proterozoic Cahill Formation. The orebodies occur as suboutcrop and exhibit significant radiometric anomalies. These occur within approximately 400m vertically of the projected unconformity with the sandstone of the Middle Proterozoic Kombolgie Formation. Oxidised and reduced uranium minerals occur in quartz-rich schists containing variable muscovite, chlorite and sericite and in the chloritic matrix of chert breccia. Secondary uranium minerals namely saleeite, metatorbernite and gummite associated with earthy iron oxides occur from the surface to 50m depth in No. 1 Orebody and up to 80m depth in No. 3 Orebody. Below the oxidised zone, uranium occurs as pitchblende finely disseminated throughout sequences of quartz muscovite chlorite schist up to 150m thick and as open space fillings in zones of structural deformation. The uranium-bearing schists directly overlie up to 300m of dolomite and magnesite containing minor interbedded schist units and are themselves overlain by approximately 2 000m of more micaceous schists of the upper part of the Cahill Formation. Regional metamorphism has occurred to at least amphibolite facies and has been followed by retrograde metamorphism to a greenschist facies equivalent. The metasediments are intruded by granitic pegmatites and dolerites. Uranium is associated strongly with chlorite of which there are at least five textural varieties. Not all of the various generations of chlorite have associated uranium. Graphitic schist horizons occur which are often less than one metre thick and discontinuous. These are best developed at the base of the quartz chlorite schist sequence where uranium grades up to 1 000ppm U may extend for several hundred metres beyond the main ore zone. Modern mine ventilation systems have grown rapidly in recent years both in tern of its complexities as well as its value for human health and safety. Although computer models are now available to help the design and operation of mine ventilation systems, considerable differences often exist between the computer based predictions and practical results. Research conducted to compare computer result with practical measurements made in ventilation circuits simulated in a physical model seems to confirm such differences. It is concluded that although a mine ventilation computer model is a very powerful tool, it can be utilized to its full potential only after more reliable input data are developed.

The United States has not begun commercial operations to tap its largest poten-tial sources of oil supply - oil shale and coal. The reason is that domestic petrol-eum has been plentiful in the past and liquid products probably could be produced from it at the lowest cost. In view of the ever-increasing need for petroleum in the United States, the critical international situation threatening foreign supplies, the growing demands for steel, and the heavy costs to industry of constantly discovering and developing new oil fields, it is believed that the prompt development of a synthetic fuel industry based on oil shale and coal is not only requisite to safeguard our oil supply but is an economically sound course for the foreseeable future. To neglect its development is to close our eyes and minds to our own resources at a time when they are needed critically. It also is apparent now that neither the Government nor industry would be taking any considerable economic risk in starting the initial plants, especially as measured against their potential value in meeting critical oil and chemical demands and in building a new industry in the West.

"Cadmium sulfide thin films were prepared on glass substrates by the spray pyrolysis technique at a substrate temperature of 490°C. Some of the films were etched by HC1 in distilled water, others were heat treated in nitrogen atmosphere, and another set of films was first etched by HC1 and then annealed. Room temperature impedance spectroscopy measurements on the films were performed using coplanar geometry in the dark and in room light in the frequency range 20 Hz to 1 MHz. The experimental data were represented by complex plane diagrams and showed one well-defined semicircle in the high frequency region. Hence the equivalent circuit that models the CdS: In thin films was found to be a single RC circuit, which indicates the bulk conduction through the grains. The influence of treatments on the electrical properties was investigated.IntroductionCadmium sulfide (CdS) is a brilliant II—VI semiconductor material with a direct band gap of 2.42 eV at room temperature. It has many outstanding physical and chemical properties, which have promising applications in multiple technical fields including photochemical catalysis, gas sensor, detectors for laser and infrared, solar cells, nonlinear optical materials, various luminescence devices, optoelectronic devices and so on [1]. There are different methods to prepare undoped and doped CdS films, such as rf sputtering [2] chemical bath deposition (CBD) [3], pulsed laser deposition (PLD) [4], and spray pyrolysis (SP) [5-11]. Of these methods, spray pyrolysis represents the less expensive option, and can produce large area high-quality low cost thin films [12]."

"The study of mechanical characteristics of rock discontinuities under different shear deformation velocities is an important premise of rock slope dynamic response analysis. According to disposing and calculating the experimental results of previous research about peak shear strength of rock discontinuities under different shear deformation velocity of constant normal loading, the law of influence of shear velocity on the total friction angle is studied. Based on the research results, it can be found that the total friction angle of rock joint specimens varies in the form of negative logarithm with the variation of shear deformation velocity. It’s also indicated that the total friction angle of rock joints decreases with the increase of shear deformation velocity for rock joints of relative strong homogeneity and isotropy. However, the total friction angle of rock joints increases with the increase of shear deformation velocity for rock joints of relative strong heterogeneity and anisotropy and the latter amplitude of increase is less than the former amplitude of decrease. The physical property and microscopic geometry of rock joints play an important effect on the increase or decrease tendency and amplitude variation of total friction angle with the increase of shear deformation velocity.INTRODUCTIONThe rock slope dynamic response is largely restricted by rock discontinuities. Hence the study of dynamic characteristics of rock discontinuities, especially the dynamic shear characteristics is an important premise of rock slope dynamic response analysis (Qi et al., 2007). Seismic load is both dynamic load and cyclic load (Liu et al., 2011). Under the dynamic and cyclic shearing actions of seismic load, the rock slope which is stable under the condition of static load may slide along the rock discontinuities whose shear strength reduce and then the earthquake landslides occur. The strength degradation and deformation mechanism of rock discontinuities under the dynamic and cyclic shearing actions is one of the key problems to be solved in the work of earthquake prevention and control of engineering slope. Based on the above understanding, predecessors conduct some researches which focus on the shear behavior mechanical characteristics of rock joints under cyclic shearing actions (Plesha, 1987; Hutson & Dowding, 1990; Jing et al., 1992, 1993; Huang et al., 1993; Qiu et al., 1993; Homand et al., 2001; Lee et al., 2001; Jafari et al., 2003; Liu et al., 2011, 2013). However, there are a few researches about the mechanical characteristics of rock joints under different shear deformation velocities because of the restriction of shear apparatus. Crawford and Curran (1981) conducted a series of one-way cyclic direct shear tests on four kinds of natural rock joints under different shear deformation velocities varying from 0 to 200 mm/s. The tests showed that at low normal stresses the peak shear strength of soft rock joints exhibited an increase up to a certain velocity, after which it remained essentially constant. For rock joints of intermediate hardness, the peak shear strength was essentially independent of shear deformation velocity; whereas for hard rock joints, the peak shear strength of which showed a significant variation with the shear deformation velocity. Jafari et al. (2003) carried out a series of conventional triaxial tests on artificial rock joints of regular saw-tooth shape with axial loading rate from 0.05 mm/s to 0.4 mm/s."

This report summarizes a U.S. Bureau of Mines study on the application of geotechnology to identify and minimize ground control hazards in talc mining operations in northwest Georgia. The major ground control hazard is pillar sloughing attributed to the steeply dipping orientation of a pronounced foliation in the talc ore body. The sloughing problem, which gradually reduces the effective support area of a pillar through attrition, can be minimized by appropriate artificial support, as determined by a rock classification system, and by a more uniform pillar design. A boundary element model confirmed the advantages of using a uniform pillar design to avoid excessive loads on portions of irregular pillars. Instrumentation to measure roof convergence and pillar loading was installed at selected locations in an active talc mine but failed to detect any significant changes, suggesting that the gneiss hanging wall constitutes a strong roof that probably can support large spans between pillars and permit high extraction ratios. This interpretation also is supported by a rock classification of the hanging wall gneiss.

Recent subsidence legislation indicates that mining engineers would be welt advised to be able to predict and control surface damage caused by mine subsidence. To date, such an ability is practically nonexistent. Model analysis is suggested as one of the alternative paths available which might yield fruitful results. Similitude requirements developed for a self-loaded body in static or quasi-static equilibrium indicate that complete similitude without centrifuging is an impracticability. However, a pilot experimental study which used a simplifying assumption to correctly model mine subsidence has produced results in qualitative agreement with field observations. The purpose of this paper is to present a discussion of the various approaches that can be taken in the study of mine subsidence phenomena. Particular attention is focused upon the rational selection and use of laboratory models. Broadly interpreted, mine subsidence is the deformation of the rock mass enclosing a mine. Depending upon a number of factors, the movement of the subsiding rock mass may disrupt gas and water lines or other buried utilities, damage surface structures such as buildings and bridges, dislocate streams, roads, and rail lines, aggravate acid mine drainage and fire problems, and generally mar the landscape. It is clearly a problem that no mine manager can safely ignore. It is also a problem that will grow with the general population increase. In the following discussion, a summary review of past and present approaches to subsidence studies is given. The possibilities of duplicating subsidence phenomena in laboratory models are examined, and an analysis of a particular type of model is presented. Some preliminary results obtained from a model of the particular type analyzed are then discussed. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK Historically, subsidence investigations have been empirical studies in the field and laboratory or theoretical analyses of mathematically idealized media. Empirical and theoretical work in the United States has generally lagged behind investigations abroad. In the United States, field studies are mostly pre-World War 11. These are summarized in the Mining Engineer's Handbook. ' Field studies in Europe are more recent and more extensive. Those made in Great Britain are summarized in the Subsidence Engineers Handbook2 and represent observations made at 157 different collieries. Such studies by themselves are of limited usefulness as are all empirical studies. One can never be certain that conditions at one mine will be similar enough to those at another to warrant the drawing of like conclusions. European subsidence formulas rely heavily upon the "angle of draw" and "critical area" concepts. The angle of draw is defined as the angle between a vertical line through the face, and another line extending from the face to the surface at the point where movement is zero. The critical area is defined in relation to the least extraction necessary to produce maximum subsidence. Fig. 1 illustrates the angle of draw and critical area concepts. First and second "limits of influence" are also shown. The angle of draw and associated critical area concept are obviously not well defined, being dependent upon the accuracy of the surface survey. In Great Britain, the angle of draw has increased through the years from about 26 to 35°. In the United States, zero and negative angles of draw have been reported. In the authors' opinion, these purely geometrical concepts represent an oversimplification of subsidence phenomena and their use, in the United States at least, should be discouraged. Empirical observations of laboratory models containing layers of earth, sand, clay, and plaster were made by Fayol (cited by Peele) as early as 1885. An outgrowth of his work was the "dome theory," a verbal description of what is assumed to occur in subsiding rock masses. The dome theory has since fallen into disrepute. Theoretical analyses worthy of the name treat a subsiding rock mass as a deformable body. In these analyses, the actual rock mass is replaced by an idealized material that deforms according to a simple stress-strain relationship. The stress equations of equilibrium expressing the Newtonian laws of mechanical action and the geometry of strain furnish additional equations that must be satisfied. A loading criterion-generally understood, and in some cases stated explicitly-completes the theory.

Improving economic conditions are reflected in the statistical picture of the petroleum and natural gas industry for 1933. Prices were better, demand was greater and the volume of production increased. The increase in the production of gas has been due mainly to the utilization of outlets to the new prolific gas fields of Potter and Tioga counties; of oil, to the growing demand for Pennsylvania grade lubricants. It should be emphasized that nowhere is volume of production more subject to control due to the extensive use of secondary methods of recovery and regional peculiarities than in Pennsylvania. A summary of developments in production for Pennsylvania in 1933 of necessity is brief. The data listed in Table 1 are all too few in number and not all that is desirable from the standpoint of accuracy. No state agency for the collection of data exists, no reports are compulsory. Nevertheless, because of the hearty cooperation of many individuals and public spirited corporations, it is believed that the data are as reliable as are obtainable at the present time. Furthermore, records of the past too often are lost, were never in existence or are fragmentary, to say the least. Illustrative of the condition is the fact that no thorough study of the oil and gas-producing regions has ever been made. The publications of the Pennsylvania Topographic and Geologic Survey upon the subject are noteworthy and valuable, especially the most recent one.' The Survey has been handicapped in the work by lack of time, personnel and funds in addition to the difficulties mentioned previously. It is obvious, therefore, that Table 1 cannot be completed for Pennsylvania. The data simply are not in existence. Officially there are 328 oil and gas pools or fields known by name and 58 distinct sands or horizons, one or more of which are productive of oil and gas in the various pools, but reliable data for only three general regions could be assembled.

In mid-Tertiary time a wet silici-alkalic magma penetrated the Precambrian rocks of what is now the Tenmile Range of Central Colorado and formed the Climax Stock. The stock is a composite one and was intruded in four separate irruptions, each giving rise to a major hydrothermal event. The first three of these produced large stockwork ore bodies that cap and flank the tops of their respective source intrusives; the fourth, and last, yielded almost no commercial mineralization. The ore bodies and their related zones of alteration are circular to ring-shaped in plan and arcuate in section. The different phases of the stock are so positioned with respect to each other that many of the circular and arcuate zones of mineralization and alteration overlap or are juxtaposed. Evidence of a time separation between the different ore bodies is found in certain dikes that were intruded between periods of mineralization and are well mineralized in one ore body but are barren in another. If it is assumed that the parent magma at Climax contained 10 per cent "water," that the "water" contained 0.1 grams per liter of molybdenum, and that the processes of extraction were 100 per cent efficient, then approximately 10 cubic miles of magma would be required for the formation of each ore body. The volume requirements, taken in conjunction with the cross-sectional areas of the different phases of the stock to explored depths, suggest to the authors that each magma chamber was columnar, extended to a depth of thousands of feet, and was connected with a much larger master reservoir. The repetition of similar intrusive, structural, and hydrothermal events, indicates periodic tapping of this reservoir. A regular chemical evolution of the parent magma is suggested by the systematic change in metal ratios and differences in the sites of deposition, relative to the source intrusive, in each of the four separate igneous hydrothermal stages. The preparation of ground was due to changes in magmatic and/ or hydrothermal pressures within the igneous-hydrothermal columns; small, repeated, up and down movements of the rock enclosing the tops of the columns formed the stockwork fractures into which the mineralizers penetrated. The forceful emplacement of each successive phase of the Climax Stock resulted in a slight doming and rotation to the westward of the earlier-formed geologic features. Postore normal displacement along the Mosquito fault is estimated at about 9000 feet. Part of one ore body was cut by the fault and lies at depth below the Paleozoic sedimentary strata on the hanging wall. On the footwall side of the fault, subaerial erosion and glaciation removed a large part of one ore body and uncovered the top of a second.

Samuel Hopkins, an 18th century inventor from Philadelphia, has been little noted nor long remembered by History, but it was he who on July 31, 1790, obtained what no other man can ever achieve -the first patent issued by the Government of the United States. Signed by President George Washington, the patent guaranteed to Hopkins the protection of the American Government for his "improvement, not known or used before, . . . in the making of Potash . . . by a new Apparatus and Process." The patent itself is no longer important, but it serves as a milestone in the development of an industry that is now rapidly moving to fulfill its role as a mineral to feed the world. Potash ranks as one of the oldest products of Man, having been used as a condiment by the habitants of Gaul a thousand years before Athens achieved its Golden Age of culture. By Hopkins' time, the uses of potash had changed considerably, going primarily into glass-making, tanning, soap, and explosives, yet the same sources and techniques of manufacturing potash used during the earlier 2000 years-that is, leaching of plant ashes in iron pots with water, followed by water evaporation and crystallization of the potassium salts-were still being used.

AS THE LOCAL electric generating plants increased in size and capacity and costs of producing electricity came down, it became apparent that it was no longer good economy to operate individual boiler plants at the Company's various collieries to power steam hoists and compressors. Great economies could be made by burning the Coal at central power plants and using electric power at the collieries. During the period after the end of the war, a steady and continuing programme of replacing first the smaller steam-driven units, and later the steam-driven compressors, was undertaken, and finally the larger hoists, those at No. 12 Colliery in New Waterford and No. 20 Colliery in Glace Bay, were the last units operated by steam.

"Most FeNi furnaces used to rely on post-combustion and off-gas cooling inside the furnace to eliminate the produced CO gas, and control the off gas temperature. As furnace load, capacity, and thus gas volumes increased over the years, this led to increased instabilities that can cause problems in controlling the operation. Some of the large capacity furnaces nowadays work with partial or full combustion outside the furnace, more similar to the steel industry. Forced combustion with or without enriched air and other additions can support in controlling post-combustion, stabilizing and even reducing off gas amounts, and affecting composition. This paper presents some of the possibilities and advantages of having a specially designed post-combustion system for the FeNi laterite industry, but that could also be applied to other processes as well.Large Scale Furnaces In the FeNi industry, the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) process is still going strong in spite of continuous hope that hydrometallurgical processes will one day make the RKEF plant obsolete. Within the pyrometallurgical plants there is a continuous trend for larger scale furnaces. The development for a number of furnaces that were started before 1985 and increased capacity by “natural growth” is given in Figure 1. Natural growth refers to the development of the plants that after having mastered a certain level of operation, were ready for a higher load that could be installed either with a new furnace on the same site, or during a revamp. The advantages of natural growth are numerous, for example: •,Deep knowledge of the ore and its’ behavior, no need for testing, and little risk of surprises. •,Mining, laboratory, equipment, etc. is all proven technology for the conditions on site. •,Starting a furnace with increased capacity is a re-start, not a green-field commissioning. •,Typically, when increasing the production capacity of an existing plant, not the entire plant is commissioned for the first time, but only a part. In the FeNi laterite industry for example, the kilns may already have had the capacity to provide enough material."

"IntroductionTHE OPINION is held by many persons outside the mining industry, and by some within it, that mine •operators customarily find it advantageous to mine •only the richer parts of orebodies and to leave behind, perhaps permanently, leaner material which could be mined only at a lesser profit. This opinion and the inference which might be drawn from it that 'gutting' of mineral resources is a common feruture• of the mining industry are prejudicial to the intertsts of the industry and deserve careful scrutiny. Oddly enough, a theory of mine economics which gives much support for the opinion was advanced first by members of the mining profession itself, has been repeated •several times in mining literature, and to my knowledge has never been adequately refoted.According to the theory, selective mining of the rich ore first on a large scale will yield substantial gains and these gains do not merely reflect the desire of 'money minded investors' for a quick return but derive from the logical application of compound interest rates and the concept of ;present value. W. O. Hotchkiss and R. D. Parks (1) illustrate the reasoning with a hypothetical example in which an orebody of 4,000,000 tons may be mined either in its entirety in forty years at $1.00 per ton profit or selectively with the recovery of only the richest half in twenty years at $1.50 per ton profit. They show that, with Hoskold rates of 4 and 8 per cent, the present value of profits from mining only the richer 2,000,000 tons exceeds the present value of profits :from mining the whole orebody by about 20 per cent."

"The Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits reviews the successive evaluation steps in the domains of geology, engineering, and economics. The Guide analyzes, in a systemic perspective, the sequence of exploration, development, and evaluation work required to bring a mineral deposit to production. The aim is to identify the metal/mineralization losses and ore dilution that each work step contributes to the evaluation and mining process. The procedure allows one to maximize the income and profits of a mining operation, and to reduce the risks of financial losses tied to investment decisions in the mining sector. For greater efficiency, the criteria of reserve estimation and classification should be integrated with the evaluation steps and methods. At earlier stages of deposit development, when quantitative knowledge is available mainly on the geological axis, the term ""delimited mineral deposit"" should be used. The term ""reserve"" should be used only in an operating mine or in a mining project, when information in the geological, engineering, and economic domains is adequate to ensure technical and financial feasibility. ""Reserves"" are by definition ""mining reserves"". Each category of proven/probable reserves and measured/indicated deposits should be subdivided into two classes to express better the many steps of mineral valuation. The category of ""possible reserves"" shall be replaced by that of ""inferred mineralization"". This system, derived from the Australasian Code, can easily be integrated into current practices of the exploration and mining industry within a short timeframe. The proposal to develop the use of the margins of error of the estimates at a confidence level of90% should be viewed in a longer timeframe. Establishing the precision of the mineral inventories and distinguishing between categories and classes by means of the margin of error will require more work and a longer break-in period.SOMMAIRELe ""Guide d’évaluation des gisements d'or"" analyse, dans une approche systémique, les travaux d'évaluation et de mise en valeur des gisements minéraux dans l'axe de la géologie, dans l'axée l'ingénierie et dans I ‘axe de l'économique. Aux stades antérieurs du développement minéral, lorsque les connaissances quantitatives ne s'étendent qu’à l'axe géologique, le terme ""gisement délimite"" sera utilisé. Le terme ""réserve"" ne sera utilisé que dans une mine en exploitation au dans un projet minier, lorsque l'information dans les axes de la géologie, de l'ingénierie et de l'économique sera appropriée pour en garantir la faisabilité technique et économique. Chaque catégories des réserves, prouvée et probable sera subdivisée en deux classes pour mieux qualifier les niveaux d'évaluation du projet. La catégorie actuelle des réserves possibles sera remplacée par celle des ""minéralisations inférées"". Plusieurs essais démontrent que le système propose, qui s'inspire du Code australasien, peut facilement et rapidement s'intégrer dans les pratiques de l'industrie. II pourrait également contribuer à une standardisation des méthodes et des nomenclatures à l'échelle internationale. La proposition d'utiliser les marges d'erreur des estimes au niveau de confiance de90%pour caractériser les estimations se situe dans une plus longue perspective. Cette application demandera des développement méthodologiques additionnels ainsi qu'une période de rodage."

Macintosh use in mine-planning applications lags DOS machines since many users have made significant investments in hardware and training for other environments. Macintosh use is becoming more pronounced in many other industries, and com soft-ware is of at least the quality of that available for DOS machines and many workstations. This paper describes attributes of the Macintosh computer family as related to many mine-planning problems and solutions including software, memory considerations, workstations, DOS compatibility, and networking.

"Part 1. REDUCTION AND USE OF OXIDANTSSUMMARYA study has been made of the volumetric determination of molybdenum by reduction in the Jones reductor, receiving the reduced solution in a mixture of ferric alum and phosphoric acid, and titrating with standard oxidizing agents. In addition to potassium permanganate, which has long been utilized for this titration, potassium dichromate and ceric sulphate have been found to be applicable. The latter oxidants have been found to be especially useful in the form of dilute solutions for the determination of small amounts of molybdenum. The tests revealed that certain internal indicators give excellent results in these titrations.Reason for These ExperimentsThe following study was initiated with the hope of providing the mining and metallurgical industries with an accurate and rapid technical method for the determination of molybdenum in such low-grade materials as ores, rocks, tailings, steels, and alloys containing less than 0.3 percent molybdenum. Although the experimental work was designed with this purpose in mind, many of the results are applicable to material containing a higher percentage of molybdenum.While the Bureau of Mines had an experiment station in Colorado, considerable analytical work was done on what were then (up to about 1923) classed as rare metals. One of these was molybdenum; and in Bulletin 212, Bonardi's (1) 3/ 60-page chapter covered all methods for the analysis of molybdenum."

En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe el uso de la evaluación multicriterial optimizada (Modelo IMCA) para cuantificar las alternativas: externalidad positiva y negativa. El modelo IMCA es una metodología inclusiva, participativa, vinculante, medible, confiable y comprensible que jerarquiza alternativas y escoger el mejor escenario evaluado en un contexto holístico, de forma que este modelo aporta a la mejora de decisiones adecuadas y sostenibles y evita conflictos sociales.
