It is now 35 years since the organization of the first sulfide smelting conference in 1983. Since then, the smelting base metals industry has experienced several changes driven by the necessity to improve economic, operational and environmental performances and resource efficiency and meet the increasing market demand for metals. In this continuously challenging environment, it is relevant to recognize which are the main challenges that the industry will face in the coming years and critically address our preparedness to respond to them. This analysis have to consider not only the effort required from the fundamental research and technology aspects but also how these pillars interact with the drivers behind the base metals industry. This paper discusses some relevant aspects required to continue developing the base metal industry focusing on copper. Aspects such as the need to supporting the generation of fundamental metallurgical knowledge, acquisition and proper use of data with advanced analytics methods, technological innovation to develop sustainable process flowsheet are discussed with emphasis on efforts conducted by Aurubis.

"Nickel powder can be produced by the reduction of a nickel ammine complex solution by hydrogen at high temperature and pressure. To minimize the deposition of fine nickel on the surface of the reactor and other equipment, seed crystals are added to the initial solution to promote nucleation of the nickel powder. Such seed crystals catalyze the precipitation of the nickel particles on the surface of the seed and enhance grain growth. In this study, nickel nuclei were precipitated by the addition of a polymer to the nickel ammine complex solution, resulting in the production of nickel powder. Thus, we herein propose a model that explains the effect of the polymer in the precipitation of nickel nuclei.INTRODUCTIONNickel powder is commonly produced via a hydrometallurgical process from the hydrogen reduction of a solution containing a nickel ammine complex at high temperatures and pressures, and this process was commercialized in the 1950s by Sherritt Gordon (Sherritt International, Canada, Benson & Colvin,1973; The Staff, Research and Development Division, Sherritt Gordon Mines, Ltd., 1958).In the above transformation, upon the injection of hydrogen gas into the solution, nickel is reduced as outlined in Equation(1), ultimately resulting in the production of nickel powder.Ni(NH3)nSO4+ H2?Ni+ (NH4)2SO4+ (n-2)NH3(n:2–6)(1)In this process, seed crystals are added to the reactor to suppress the precipitation of fine nickel (scaling) and to enhance nickel reduction (Benson & Colvin, 1973; Mackiw, Lin & Kunda, 1957). More specifically, iron sulfate and a small amount of dispersant polymer are added, which leads to the formation of nuclei. Upon subsequent hydrogen reduction, the reduced nickel can then be deposited on the nuclei, allowing nickel particle growth to take place. However, this results in iron contamination in the final nickel product, and so the use of pure nickel as a seed crystal is desirable to produce high quality nickel powders."

It is argued, that plate convergence, i.e. subduction, at other than right angles under a continental margin may lead to compensa-tional transcurrent faulting in the sialic environment. In this pro-cess the introduction of ultrabasic slivers, derived from the down-going oceanic crusial plate, along this fault may occur. This regi-me, both compressive overall and tensional along the transcurrent fault, will contain numerous indications for ongoing igneous and tectonic processes (such as volcanism, hot springs and frequent earthquakes).Examples for this scenario are California, the hinge between the Alpine- and Appennine orogens and the island of Sumatra.Igneous manifestations of subduction will be present both as inter-mediate intrusions and/or andesitic piles. The intermediate volca-nics may be intensely altered (chloritic, propylitic, argillic). Silice-ous breccias and banded chalcedonic sinters may be commonly found. This entire scenario is indicative for epithermal gold mine-ralisation.

The prevention of coal-mine explosions has been one of the chief purposes of the Bureau of Mines. In facti the first Federal appropriation relating to mining methods, in 1908, authorized the investigation of the causes of mine explosions and the possible methods of preventing them. When that investigation started the mining industry had not determined the real causes of a succession of terrible coal-mine explosions in various countries, culminating in the great disasters at CoulTièl'es, France, and Monongah, W. Va. Coal dust as an agent of widespread explosions had been under suspicion, and watering to allay the dust was recommended by some mining engineers but the watering of coal-mine dust was adopted in comparatively few mines of the United States and Great Britain, and had not been introduced widely in any country except Germany. Rock dusting, another method of preventing explosions of coal dust, was early tested with success by the Bureau of Mines in its fist gallery at Pittsburgh and, beginnig in 1911, at the experimental mine, Bruceton, Pa. Several of the fist publications i of the bureau suggested that rock dust be used in gaseous or dusty bituminous mines, and in 1915 Technical Paper 842 strongly recommended it. Since that time additional tests in the experimental mine have fully confied this :ft judgment.

During the past 20 years, the seismic refraction method has been used for depth to bedrock investigations. Its usefulness, however, has been recognized mainly in engineering applications, for instance in connection with the construction of power stations and in dam site investigations etc. Although some knowledge of the depth to bedrock can be of advantage in many other fields, the use of the conventional 12 or 24 channel seismic refraction equipment has been very limited, especially in ore prospecting and mining operations. The reasons for this are mainly the rather complicated operation of the instruments and the high costs. A conventional seismic equipment requires a crew of six men, a highly trained operator and an interpreter. Furthermore, the use of explosives can under certain conditions be undesirable (naighbourhood of houses, damage to agricultural areas etc.). Since 1957 a new one-channel seismograph, 'constructed by Geophysical Specialties Company, Minneapolis, Minnesota, has been in use and this instrument simplifies operations and reduces their costs considerably.

Data from full scale marked ball tests are used to demonstrate the effects of abrasion, corrosion, and impact on overall wear rate. The predominate wear mechanism need be identified before the optimum alloy can be chosen for the grinding media. Use of high chromium grinding media often results in increased mill efficiency due to shape retention. Thus, a benefit from energy savings can result as well as a reduction in wear rate. Converting from steel to east high chromium grinding media requires close association and cooperation between producer and consumer in order to properly conduct these studies.

Up to one half of neodymium and praseodymium production, key ingredients in permanent magnets, is produced illegally. About 60% of cobalt production, critical in lithium-ion batteries and other applications, comes from central African states, and much of it is produced illegally. Tantalum, important in modern electronics, is also primarily sourced from central Africa and, again, much of it illegally. Illegal mineral production, as exemplified here, is often used to fund armed conflict. Furthermore, it is typically conducted with scant regard for human rights and environmental protection. It also leads to depressed prices which in turn limits the possibility of legitimate producers entering the market. Systems of traceability and provenance, along with cooperative supply chain participants can limit the production of illegitimate material and thereby improve conditions in the countries of origin and reduce downward pressure on prices.

This report summarizes Bureau of Mines contract research on the disposal of retorted oil shale. A data base has been developed describing the physical-chemical properties, geotechnical engineering properties, and natural cementation characteristics of spent shale. Results of field compaction tests and seepage pond tests are presented, along with results of a partially saturated finite element seepage model used to predict infiltration and seepage rates. Preliminary engineering analyses are presented for underground disposal systems, which include material transport methods, and for a surface disposal system, which includes stability analyses.

"IntroductionTHE DIE CASTING industry .as we know it today is the direct result of the invention and development of die casting machines during the nineteenth century and of reliable alloys in the twentieth. The early machines were designed to cast low melting point metals such as lead .and tin, and their alloys.It was inevitable that, as these die castings were put into service, the demand should arise for stronger materials. Zinc alloys, often containing lead, tin, copper, and aluminum as major constituents, were relatively easy to cast and stronger than the lead and tin alloys. However, it became apparent after a number of years that these zinc alloys tended to become brittle, distort, and corrode, particularly if kept in warm, humid atmospheres. Thus, considerable quantities of zinc-base .alloys were in use before the trouble was realized and effective measures could .be taken to determine the cause of the instability.The deleterious effect of certain metallic impurities on the properties of zinc •die casting .alloys has now been known for about thirty years. Brauer .and Peirce, and, later, other research workers of the New Jersey Zinc Company such as Anderson and Werley, discovered the pronouned effect of lead, cadmium, and tin on the stability of zinc-alloys."

No mercado de arames galvanizados destinados a indústria é exigida a uniformidade da camada de zinco sobre o arame. Neste trabalho, foram estudados os efeitos da velocidade de galvanização na uniformidade e espessura da camada de Zinco total, bem como a morfologia das fases de Zn e Ferro-Zinco sobre o substrato metálico. Verificou-se também o efeito do aquecimento após o processo de galvanização, observando o crescimento da camada intermetálica. Finalmente, serão mostradas as principais características de processo obtidas para garantir o atendimento aos ensaios de qualificação, em um estudo de caso de arames galvanizados produzidos em unidade industrial da Gerdau.

"In the 1990s metal prices were trending in a long-term decline and the usual cost-cutting exercises were adopted. Cuts to research and development made innovation difficult and the outlook was grim. But necessity is a strong motivator, and these conditions spurred the Mine to Mill movement that optimised across organisational ‘silos’ and utilised new technology tools, innovative software and increased computing power. Many applications of Mine to Mill exploited the fact that comminution is usually the site processing bottleneck and blasting is more efficient at breaking rock than grinding. This approach sought to: understand and characterise rock breakage from mining to the milldevelop models and simulators for blast design, fragmentation, crusher and mill circuitsdevelop tools to measure in real time the particle size distribution of rocks on run-of-mine (ROM) muck piles, at the primary crusher truck dump pocket and on conveyorsensure effective communication across the silos between geologists, blast design engineers, mining engineers and metallurgists.These methods and the technology tools available in the 1990s were widely adopted at numerous sites around the world with significant benefits. Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill throughput increases of 10–20 per cent were common. This was the advance the industry desperately needed. It was low capital cost; it was obvious. It was here to stay.Except, in too many cases, it didn’t. In the minerals price boom of the 2000s Mine to Mill was no longer necessary to ‘survive’, even though it was still good business. Some operations, including some of the early success stories, slipped back to old habits of optimising within organisation silos instead of across them. Fortunately, other operators still embraced Mine to Mill and developed new techniques. Mine to Mill was still successful, but not as widely adopted as we had expected it to be. Now the boom has ended and operations are again under cost pressure. Since these are the same circumstances that created Mine to Mill, it seems time to achieve the wider adoption. Since the 1990s many new or advanced technology tools are now available for Mine to Mill projects: blasthole sensors, new explosives formulations, new blasting techniques and modelling, ore tracking devices, improved image analysis to determine size, texture and colour of coarse ore, grade sensors, whole-stream simulation tools, and even more powerful computing hardware and data analysis software. If we could achieve so much in the 1990s, how much more can we achieve today when we have the same imperative, the same potential and a larger number of high technology tools?Citation:Cameron, P, Drinkwater, D and Pease, J, 2016. THE conventional method of making water gas involves individual plants for the separate carbonization of coal to coke and the subsequent gasification of coke with steam. The process demands lump coke, preferably made from the best quality of coking coals. The ash in the coke should have a high melting point and the gasification process suffers a loss of efficiency when cokes with low ash-melting points are used. In Britain, these coals are generally the most expensive and they are readily available only in certain localities. The coals not suitable for making lump coke, or yielding only poor quality coke, are much more widely available and are generally cheaper. DEVELOPMENT OF ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES In Germany, processes have been developed and operated commercially for the production of water gas from very low-rank coals such as brown coal and lignites, but much less effort has been spent on processes to use coals of intermediate rank, which are widely available in Britain. The brown-coal processes use coal in the form of either dust or briquettes. The most successful of the dust-gasification methods is the Winkler process, which made a substantial contribution to German oil production during the war. It uses coal in the size range 0 to 8 mm and the fuel bed is blown with a mixture of oxygen and steam at a rate high enough to give it a characteristic boiling motion or, in present-day phraseology, at a rate more than sufficient to fluidize it (Fig. 1). Air cannot be used to provide the heat required for gasification, for vari¬ous reasons. In the first place, to make the process continuous by mixing air and steam would involve the production of a lean gas containing much nitrogen. If a separate blow were used, a large amount of potential heat would be lost because the blow gas in such a process would contain a very high percentage of carbon monoxide. Oxygen is necessary therefore and oxygen remains relatively expensive for use in gasification. In the Winkler generator, formation of clinker caused by local overheating does not occur, because of the mobility and high heat transfer of a fluidized bed. These properties of fluidized dusts have been used most successfully.

"Abstract -Borate minerals, such as colemanite, ulexite and borax, have been reported in Tertiary continental basins of West Anatolia, Turkey, and Samos Island, Greece.Tuffaceous rocks interbedded with the borates are rich in authigenic silicate minerals such as zeolites, potassium feldspar and opal-CT, all of which have a genetic association with the borates. Chemical analyses of the tuffaceous rocks show variation in major elements due to the varying percentage of carbonaceous, detrital, and volcanic derived material.The volcanic activity in the vicinity of each particular lacustrine basin created ion-rich fluids from which a series of borates were precipitated under arid climate. Additionally, the saline-alkaline character of these fluids was responsible for the diagenesis of the silicic glass of the tuffaceous rocks, altering them to silicates and silica polymorphs."

Rand (Member) Recent studies have shown that the overall extraction of gold from Witwatersrand ores is increased as the proportion of gold reporting to the amalgamation circuit is increased. Testwork has therefore been carried out with a view to improving recovery by gravity concentration. In this paper, the history of gold recovery by gravity concentration is reviewed, and methods and machines at present in use are briefly described. The results of plant and laboratory tests are presented, and the limitation of existing concentrators is discussed. A pilot plant is being built for the testing of improvements to the existing concentrators and of several new devices, particularly the Reichert-cone concentrator.

IN the opencut iron mines of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota, the trend in mining is in the development of mining equipment and mining methods which will move surface overburden and ore-bearing materials with less labor and at a cheaper cost. This is a must for most of the independent operators. Their reserves of direct-shipping ore are extremely small and their operations are being conducted in small, or intermediate pits, with a high stripping ratio in the outer fringes, or shore lines of older pits. and in ore bodies passing from direct shipping to the washing and the intermediate, or retreat ore state. The trend is toward deeper stripping, longer and steeper hauls, and the necessity of moving a total of from three to five or six tons of overburden and ore material for each ton of shipping-grade ore produced. This naturally calls for greater production, with larger shovels, or draglines. cheaper drilling and blasting costs through the drilling of larger-diameter blastholes, and cheaper haulage through the use of trucks of larger capacity and more extensive use of belt-conveyor systems. This trend is notable both in stripping and mining.

"The reservoirs of Mississippian Mi-dale beds and Frobisher beds found in the Weyburn field lie at the north-western termination of a broad productive belt extending 120 miles along the northeastern rim of the Williston basin. These carbonates, and inter-bedded evaporites, originated during cycles of marine transgression and regression, and were deposited as rock types characteristic of shoal, lagoon, and basinward shelf environments. The Frobisher-Alida Beds, which form a secondary reservoir to the main Midale Beds of producing zone are composed of oolit1c, fragmental-bioclastic, vugular limestone capped by an impervious dolomitic mudstone. Production is controlled by localized structural features resulting from de-positional build-up. Excellent reservoir conditions are accompanied by an active water drive. The Frobisher Evaporite, consisting of massive primary anhydrite with dolomitic veinlets, forms the floor seal for the Midale beds oil accumulation. A significant facies transition into an oolitic, bioclastic, vugular limestone characterizes this unit. Beyond the depositional margin of the evaporitic facies, marked increases in porosity and permeability of the en-tire reservoir are noted. Carbonate units overlying the areal extent of the Frobisher Evaporite exhibit a greater degree of metasomatism, dolomitization, and more abundant secondary anhydrite.Porous carbonates comprising the producing zone of the Midale beds are divided into an oolitic, fragmental bioclastic, vugular limestone, and an overlying granular marly lime-stone unit, capped, by the Midale Evaporite. Oil is accumulated in a stratigraphic trap bounded above and be-low by primary anhydrite and truncated by the post-Mississippian erosional surface. Mississippian strata dip basinward from this erosional surface in a broad homocline exhibiting only minor irregularities. Rapid lateral and vertical porosity and permeability variations are common. Localized, separated, porous lenticles contain interstitial water in areas where the Midale beds are underlain by the Frobisher Evaporite. The major portion of the field, however, is capable of water-free production. Bottom and edge waters are found in certain portions of the field. Productive limits are tentatively defined around most of the present field perimeter. A large area along foe southern edge of the field remains open to future development. Probable ultimate remaining recoverable crude oil reserves, as of September 30th, 1958, were estimated by Mc-Daniel Consultants Ltd. to be in excess of 330 million barrels."

A rotating-cylinder electrode (RCE) was used to simulate the effect of flow velocity on pipe corrosion. A comparison is made between the electrochemical measurements obtained and those measured with a laboratory-scale flow loop. There is good general agreement if the speed of rotation of the RCE is adjusted to give the same value of mass transfer Coefficient as in the other system. Hence, it appears that the RCE is well suited to simulate actual flow conditions in pipes. The simultaneous effect of flow velocity and pH value on the corrosion rate of mild steel in a synthetic mine water was investigated. The i1nrease of corrosion rate was found to be more pronounced at lower pH values and, apart from a sharp increase below pH 4, the initial corrosion rate also increased at pH 7 and 6.
