The technologies of lead, zinc and tin extraction have made varying degrees of progress over the past twenty years. Producers of all metals have faced increasing demands for reduction of pollution and environmental degradation, and the level of public concern is rising rather than abating. New processing techniques must therefore be not only economically feasible, but politically acceptable, even when the demands of "conservationists" and ?environmentalists? are unreasonable. A new generation of processing techniques has come into being, which do not rely on an expensive sintering stage, nor use metallurgical coke, which is difficult to make without serious pollution. They utilise intense reactors, conveying materials from one stage to the next preferably within an enclosed space, obviating fume emissions, and avoiding heat losses as far as possible. The acceptability of the new techniques? is increased if lowgrade or complex materials can be treated, along with a variety of returns and wastes. In addition, a good selling and servicing organisation seems to be as important as good process technology in determining the spread of the new processes. In the field of pyrometallurgical refining the need is for more general application of several recently developed techniques rather than a search for alternatives to the existing process technologies. However, there is a need for fundamental work investigating the phenomenon of oxygen anode overvoltage in the electrolytic zinc process, in order to make progress in the further reduction of energy consumption. There is also scope for further development and application of vacuum distillation to up-grade thermally produced zinc. "The beneficiation of poor manganese ores containing phosphate gangue is very difficult by conventional processes, because of the similarities in the physico-chemical properties of the constituent minerals. The shaking table gravity concentration process and concentrated strong acid selective intensified leaching process were used for dephosphorisation of Yunnan manganese ore. The leaching process was effective. The effects of intensified leaching time, solid-liquid ratio and particle size were investigated. The relevant leaching factors were optimized as -0.125+0.088 mm particle size with 68% nitric acid for 24 h when using a solid-liquid ratio of 1:1 at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Under these conditions, the P/Mn ratio was reduced from 0.0107 to 0.0056, and the grade of manganese was increased from 12.32% to 42.76%. The dissolution of manganese during leaching was negligible.IntroductionManganese and its compounds are widely used in the iron and steel industry as deoxidation and desulfurization agents and as alloying additives [1-2]. Because of the increase in demand, low grade refractory manganese ores are becoming a new source. Many Chinese manganese ores are high in phosphorus, which cannot be used directly for metallurgical purposes. This occurs because phosphorus enters into the metal phase during smelting and its presence sharply deteriorates the mechanical properties of the metal [3-4].Kanungo and Sant [3] investigated the dephosphorization of phosphorus-rich manganese ores by selective leaching with dilute hydrochloric acid. They observed that leaching with dilute hydrochloric acid (0.1-0.6M) could reduce the phosphorus contents to the specified limit of 0.12%. Ye [5] investigated dephosphorization of high-phosphorus manganese ore of the Huayuan type. Using high intensity magnetic separation, roasting and leaching with acid for dephosphorization, as used in the industry, a 40.15% manganese concentrate with a P/Mn ratio of 0.0037 was obtained. Yimin [6] investigated magnetic separation followed by inverse flotation of high-phosphorus manganese ore, and found that the P/Mn ratio could be reduced from 0.046 to 0.002."

In this paper we describe the synthesis of a new homologous series of linear Polyglycol-based frothers that consist of Ethylene Oxide (EO) and hydroxyl as hydrophilic groups and Propylene Oxide (PO) and alkyl chains as hydrophobic groups. The synthesized frothers were of two types: Alkyl-Ethoxy-Propoxylate (abbrev. CnEOlPOm) and Alkyl-Propoxy-Ethoxylate (CnPOmEOl) giving: (a) different number of groups and chain length, and (b) different locations of the groups. The identities were confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. The characterization of the products was carried out in a bubble column. At steady state, bubble size, gas holdup and water overflow rate were measured as a function of frother concentration. The results indicate that increasing number of PO groups led to significant decrease in bubble size, and increase in gas holdup and water overflow rate. Increasing the alkyl chain length, gave similar but less pronounced trends. There was no impact of increasing the number of EO groups on bubble size but there was an in increase in gas holdup and water overflow rate. Changing the location of the PO and EO group had a significant effect on all three parameters.

A review of recent work being conducted at the university of British Columbia on the modeling of the microstructural evolution during the hot rolling of steel is presented. A mathematical model of heat transfer was developed to describe the thermal field in a slab during rough and finish rolling. The model for rough rolling, discussed in this review, also simulates the growth of oxide scale on the slab surface. Zirconium tungstate (ZrW2O8) is a unique material with a negative coefficient of thermal expansion. In order to fully utilize this material as a filler, a surface treatment needs to be developed to better improve the wetting and dispersion capabilities of the filler. This paper describes an initial study to characterize the filler as well as investigate fatty acid and silane surface treatments for eventual compounding with thermosetting matrices. It was found that ZrW20, has a point-of- zero charge between pH 2.7-3.0, and that both fatty acid and organofunctional silane treatments appear to be viable surface treatments for this unique filler.

Este trabalho investigou a possibilidade de gerar informações, para subsidiar a Samarco no aproveitamento futuro de materiais considerados estéreis pelo elevado teor de PPC e P. Foram feitos testes de caracterização tecnológica, simulando em bancada os processos de beneficiamento da Samarco Mineração. Observou-se que as amostras estudadas requererem maior consumo energético na moagem primária, implicando em uma menor produtividade. Essas apresentam índices inferiores de recuperação na deslamagem e flotação convencional. Entretanto apresentaram boa cinética de flotação e o grau de liberação do quartzo maior que 90% para todas as frações granulométricas. As amostras também apresentaram baixa produtividade na moagem secundária e granulometria grosseira para o atendimento da meta de Blaine praticada atualmente. Não foi possível a obtenção da especificação final de sílica no concentrado após a remoagem. Os testes de sedimentação não indicaram problemas. Foram realizados também ensaios em escala de bancada para separação magnética utilizando Minimag (WHIMS) que provaram que os materiais estudados apresentam comportamento paramagnético.

(written discussion?).-Regarding the statement of Mr. Ordoñez, on page 1007, concerning the synclinal curving of sedimentary beds caused by the extrusion of volcanic necks, that "this phenomenon might occur, but it is not fully proved in our fields," I beg to reply that the funnel and anticlinal-ring structure is actually associated with igneous intrusions in the Mexican oil fields, as we were able to ascertain by plotting an underground contour map and making a structural model of the oil-bearing beds of the Ebano field. (written discussion?).-The paper under discussion is not only of interest in connection with its subject but it is a contribution of considerable importance to our knowledge of the possible effect of igneous rocks upon the accumulation of petroleum in the Mexican fields.

Acid-producing mine tailings are present at many active and inactive mine sites and pose an environmental liability due to the potential for acid rock drainage. Acid rock drainage originating from a tailings pile, a waste rock pile, or exposed sulfide-rich rock, can cause discoloration and turbidity in receiving waters, and the loading of ions mobilized by the acid can cause a decrease in aquatic flora and fauna, and reduction in the quality of groundwater. The primary cause of acid generation is the oxidation of sulfide minerals, predominantly pyrite and pyrrhotite. Considerable mine tailings are being stored on surface in vast tailings impoundment areas across Canada. In the tailings within this study, from the Sudbury, Ontario area, the sulfide mineral of primary concern with respect to acid generation is pyrrhotite. Different tailings types show varying and progressive degrees of oxidation correlating to their specific sulfur contents. The degree of oxidation is determined by the relative extent to which the sulfides have reacted as well as the depth of oxidation within the tailings. Natural Resources Canada, CanmetMINING is dedicated to research supporting the Green Mining Initiative, a program reducing business risks by demonstrating practices that reduce environmental impacts. In cooperation with the Canada Mining Innovation Council (CMIC), applied research aims to reduce land disturbance, waste volumes, and releases to the environment. By reutilizing tailings from vast impoundment areas as a component in backfill, the potential environmental impact would be lessened considerably, due to the reduced tonnage stored on surface long-term. From an operating perspective, there is a need for supplemental feed for backfill from time to time. The reclamation of old tailings for use in backfill is also driven by the fact that old tailings ponds may not be structurally stable, and it may be more cost effective to remove the tailings than to upgrade the impoundment structure. However it is imperative that these old tailings be fully characterized to determine their suitability for use underground, in order to ensure the long-term integrity of the resulting backfill matrix. A study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of tailings reclamation from old impoundment areas as a significant component in backfill. The materials were first physically and chemically characterized, followed by preparation of samples to determine optimal mix proportions for strength development for both paste and hydraulic fill compliance. It was found that the amount of oxidized tailings included in the backfill material had a profound effect on both the segregation and settling properties of the backfill matrix, as well as the mechanical properties of the samples. The strategies for decision-making, based on the criteria for material characterization, mining plan, and cost effectiveness are discussed.

Ion-exchange fibres (IEF) were prepared by the ir­radiation grafting of styrene onto polypropylene, which was then subsequently functionalized. Strong- and weak-base exchangers were prepared and evaluated Tor their ability to extract gold cyanide selectively. The IEF prepared had loading capacities similar to those of the corresponding resins and they had good selectivities for gold cyanide when contacted with a mixed metal-cyanide solution. The expected advantage of IEF over granular exchangers, that of faster kinetics, was illustrated. The strong-base Iibre in particular seemed to be very effective for the extraction of gold cyanide from dilute solutions such as return-dam waters.

This year the metal mining industry is in for some difficult decisions as the nation struggles to control inflationary pressures resulting from higher production costs and a money-squeeze policy. Re- clouding these problems will be campaign oratory as Congress seeks reelection. Charges will be hurled back and forth between a Republican White House and a Democratic Congress. Inflation and Vietnam will be the big one. Hut pollution i. coming on strong. President Nixon has formed a new Council on Environmental Quality although he already had named a similar unit within his Cabinet six months ago. Both are charged with bringing 1.0 bear all of the Federal Government's talents on the focal points of antipollution measures The biggest task will be to find out how many different "units" are currently mixed up in these efforts.

The electromagnetic retransmission system is a new, automated method of locating trapped mine workers. This technique overcomes many 1 imitations inherent in electromagnetic direction finding by reducing the effects of the conducting ground to an acceptable maximum, by finding position accurately in the presence of antenna tilt, and by eliminating the need for the receiver to be located directly above the subsurface transmitter. Three transportable three-axis magnetic-dipole transmitters on the surface create a system of electronic grids in which the phases of the downlink Signals convey position information. The subsurface retransmitter modulates the uplink carrier of the existing beacon transmitter with the received downlink signal; the coal-pillar loop antenna is used for both receiving and transmitting. The uplink receiver uses a three-axis antenna and extensive digital signal processing. A small computer integrates data, estimates position, and controls system operation through VHF-FM communications. Both coal-mine and deep-mine operation are possible by selecting appropriate transmitting power and signal frequencies. This report shows such systems to be both feasible and practical.

To prevent injury to miners caused by violent whipping of mining machine trailing cables. Approach: The hydraulic cable controls are adjusted to reduce whip by visual reference of the cable sag to the height of the cable guide. How It Works: The cable sag is adjusted by visually estimating its height above the ground, at a specific reference distance behind the machine. This reference distance is measured horizontally back from the point where the cable leaves the cable guide. The Reference distance is 2H where H equals the height of the cable guide above the floor. See Figure 1. Cable sag should be less during rewinding than during unwinding. During cable unwinding, the cable height (at the refer¬ence distance) should equal 1/31-1. During rewinding, the cable height should equal ½ H. Field tests were made on several manufacturers' equipment after adjusting cable sag as above. Cable whip was greatly reduced for all, and whip was almost eliminated on a shuttle car equipped with a Joy Manufacturing Company 500108-104 cable reef and the newer (nonporous) shuttle valve. The following directions are for adjusting cable sag on a shuttle car equipped with a Joy Manufacturing Company 500108-104 Cable Reel equipped with the newer shuttle valve. Cable sag can be adjusted on machines equipped with other cable reels and valves by referring to the manufacturer's manual and making the appropriate cable valve adjustments.

"After more than 85 years of service, a critical link between New York and New Jersey, the Goethals Bridge over the Arthur Kill waterway, is being replaced with two new parallel bridges. Each bridge includes 1,650 feet long signature steel composite cable-stayed bridge, a 2,789 feet long New York approach and a 1,889 feet long New Jersey approach. The superstructure of each approach is supported on a series of two-column concrete piers and each column is supported on a single large diameter drilled shaft varying from 4.5 to 9 feet in diameter and anchored 45 feet below ground into the underlying rock.A performance-based methodology was followed for the strength and extreme event limit states design of the drilled shaft foundations. The design for seismic loads has been performed using the AASHTO Guide Specifications for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design. For all strength and service loads, the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications were used. Since the longitudinal and confinement requirements in the two specifications vary, the minimum longitudinal reinforcement was based on the more stringent requirements of the two codes. A design example is presented to illustrate the methodology in bridge deep foundation design using nonlinear time-history global analysis results with soil-pile interaction represented by sets of horizontal and vertical nonlinear soil springs along the drilled shaft, based on the soil and rock properties from the boreholes test results. In this paper the design methodology implements strain limits related to earthquake intensities and damage levels to calculate the capacity using XTRACT analysis, which aids designers to adopt applicable provisions that meet specific design requirements.INTRODUCTIONAfter more than 85 years of service, a critical link between New York and New Jersey, the Goethals Bridge over the Arthur Kill waterway, is being replaced with two new parallel bridges designed to carry vehicular traffic and a future mass transit corridor. The superstructure of each approach is supported on a series of two-column concrete piers that vary in height from 121.3 feet near the cable-stayed bridges to 11.8 feet near the abutments. Each column is supported on a single large diameter drilled shaft varying from 4.5 to 9 feet in diameter and anchored 45 feet below ground into the underlying rock."

The rapid increase in the mmber of automobiles during the last 25 years has resulted in the insistent and growing demand for better roads of more permanent construction. Some form of State license for the operation of automobiles has been in effect almost from the time of the first "self-propelled" vehicle, and some part of the revenue derived from the sale of these licenses has been applied to the maintenance and construction of roads. However, to obtain funds with which to build their present highway systems, the individual States have resorted to the taxation of gasoline. The first State to adopt a gasoline tax was Oregon, the law becoming effective February 25, 1919. By 1928, all of the States except two had levied taxes on gasoline at rates varying from 2 to 5 cents per gallon. New York and Massachusetts passed gasoline tax laws which became effective in 1929. Regulations governing the quality and the methods of handling gasoline and other petroleum products sold in the States have also been adopted by 29 States; many of these laws antedate the adoption of a gasoline tax. The variations in motor fuel speci- fications and methods of test have been pronounced in the several States. The Bureau of Mines, in making certain technical studies of the rasolines marketed throughout the United States, the results of which are reported in its semiannual motor gasoline surveys and other reports, has had occasion to obtain and compile all of the present (April 1, 1931) tax and pection laws of the several States which relate to motor fuel and other petroleum products. DURING the summer of 1949, the United Nations Scientific Conference on the Conservation and Utilization of Resources met at Lake Success. As summed up by one writer, the purpose was: "That everyone will try to learn how to feed more people from an acre of land." That objective is a stimulus to the phosphate rock industry as well as other industries. Phosphate rock was mined first in the Canadian province of Quebec where it was found as an apatite in pockets. In 1863, mining began near the Rideau Canal, first in open trenches and quarries until shafts were sunk. These operations were difficult since hard rock had to be drilled and blasted. Steam was the source of power. The phosphate rock was hand-selected and recovery ranged from 6 to 10 pct, averaging 70 pct to 85 pct bpl (bone phosphate of lime). Costs, f.O.b. Montreal, were $14 a ton, and selling prices averaged $17 a ton. In 1885, about 29,-000 tons were sold on this basis, but by 1892 the output fell to 8000 tons at an average price of $15 a ton at Montreal. South Carolina Deposits Phosphate rock was first discovered in South Carolina in 1837, but a mining company was not formed until 1867. It was immediately successful, and the industry continued to develop and ship an increased tonnage of land and river rock, shipments increasing from approximately 20,000 tons in 1868 to 537,000 tons in 1890, when the shipments began to decrease. In 1892 only 350,000 tons were shipped. In this field there were two types of deposits: land rock and river rock. More land rock tonnage was mined until about 1887 when river rock production began to equal it. The land rock was mined adjacent to and in the river marshes by pick, shovel, and wheelbarrow. Each worker dug daily a space 6 ft wide, 15 ft long and 6 ft deep, which was overburden, and then loaded about 3 cu yd of phosphate rock into wheelbarrows. His helper would wheel the barrows to small steam railroads up to 250 ft distant. Water was kept from the pits by steam pumps connected to railway cars. The phosphate rock was loaded into railroad cars, hauled and dumped into a log washer to which water was added, and run over trommel screens to eliminate the clay and loose sand. Steam shovels for loading were introduced about 1891. River rock was mined by floating dipper dredges and at low tide was loaded into barges by laborers using oyster tongs, the large lumps being hand-loaded. Barges and bateaus were unloaded by wheelbarrows which were wheeled to the same type of land rock washers. The washer product was piled with stacked pine cordwood in alternate layers and fired for drying. Usually this was done under sheds along the river bank. The dried rock then was transferred to ships, usually three or four-masted schooners. Cost of production of both land and river rock, including $1 a ton royalty paid to the state for state-owned property, was approximately $4.25 a ton averaging 60 pct bpl. The selling price was approximately $7 a ton f.O.b. In 1886 the courts handed down a decision permitting anyone to mine, and many additional companies were organized immediately. As a result, the selling price was lowered to a profit margin of 50Ø or less per ton. The South Carolina mines were eventually shut down when a more profitable source of phosphate rock was discovered in Florida. Florida Deposits Phosphate rock was discovered in Florida in 1882, and in 1883 a small quarry was opened near Hawthorne. In 1886 phosphate rock of good grade was discovered on Peace River, and the Arcadia Phosphate Co. was formed. In 1888 the company began shipments amounting to 3000 tons that year. During the latter part of 1888, hard-rock phosphate was discovered near Dunnellon. Exploration extended rapidly, and deposits of hard-rock phosphate were mined over a wide area so that shortly after 1900

Calumet Div. of Calumet & Hecla Inc. is engaged primarily in mining, milling, and smelting the native copper ores of northern Michigan. The copper occurs in fragmental tops of lava flows and in certain interbedded felsitic conglomerates of Pre- Cambrian age. The most famous native copper ore- body in world history is the Calumet conglomerate, which outcrops between the villages of Calumet and Laurium for a distance of about 2 miles. The Osceola lode parallels the conglomerate lode and is mineralized for about 3 miles. Horizontal distance between the two is 750 ft. In 1932 the price of copper dropped to 54 per lb. Coupled with the high cost of obtaining copper from extreme depths, this low price made the venture un- profitable, and the mining unit was abandoned. After the shaft pillar copper was removed from several of the conglomerate shafts in a retreating operation, the mine was allowed to fill with water. In post-depression years, when the price of copper stabilized at about 12¢, Calumet Div. found it profitable to operate its remaining mines on other lodes, as well as its tailings reclamation plants.

To permit better cap lamp positioning for users of dust helmets. Approach The present design of the dust helmet prevents use of the miner's cap lamp when the front shield is raised, When the shield is raised I the cap lamp is directed at the mine roof or back, making the lamp useless in the event the miner needs to wear his self-rescuer. A flip bracket was designed by the Bureau of Mines to correct this situation. How It Works The safety hat is modified by the addition of lamp clips, a bracket and a hinge on the cap lamp and face shield. Two clips hold the lamp cord firmly to the helmet. When the safety hat shield is raised, compressive force from the lamp cord causes the cap lamp hinge to swing open about 90%, allowing the lamp

"I.-IntroductionAn attempt bas been made in this paper to provide a basis for appraisal of the future of the coal briquetting industry in Alberta by outlining the processes used for briquetting various ranks of coal, by specifying the requirements of a briquetted fuel, by indicating .the status of the industry in the United States, by giving developments in Western Canada, by assessing costs of processing, and by discussing briquetting researches in progress. Much of .the detail bas been omitted since this might mask, rather than reveal, the more important phases of the problem. Reference will be made when possible to published articles where many of the details can be obtained.It should be stated at the outset that, in the writer’s opinion, there are three possible developments in Alberta as regards briquetting: (a) an expansion of the briquetting of the fines of • non-coking and coking coals of semi-anthracite, and of low and medium volatile bituminous rank; (b) the processing of the fines of high-volatile C bituminous coals; and (c) the upgrading of the lower rank high-moisture sub-bituminous coals. Details of the chemical and physical properties of these coals can be obtained in publications of the Research Council of Alberta (1, 2), and of the Fuel Research Station, Bureau of Mines, Ottawa (3).Semi-anthracite and low and medium volatile bituminons coals occur in the mountain areas of Alberta, where, during the upthrust of the Rocky mountains, the coal beds served as the sliding surface. This resulted in the coals being; crushed and consequently they contain a h1gh percentage of fines. In some cases they are high in mineral matter and require to be cleaned before being processed. However, the cleaning of fine coal is both difficult and costly. Both the amount of fines present in the mine-run coal and the amount of mineral matter associated with the coal have increased through the introduction of mechanized mining and through the recovery of coal by stripping operations."
