The low-volatile, or smokeless, coal field of southern West Virginia is in Fayette, Raleigh, Wyoming, Mercer, Summers and McDowell counties, in the extreme southern portion of the state, and extends into the adjacent counties of Tazewell and Buchanan in Virginia. McDowell County is the largest producer, with Fayette and Raleigh counties next. The total area of the field (Fig. 1) is approximately 1600 square miles, or 1,024,000 acres. The percentage of volatile matter in the various seams ranges from 15 to 26 per cent, The upper limit of true low-volatile coal is usually considered to be 23 per cent volatile matter; above this point, the coal usually is classed as medium volatile. This limit will be used in this paper. Geological Position of Seams The smokeless seams are among the oldest coal seams in the country, as the Pocahontas group of rocks is the lowest member of the coal-bearing series and rests on top of the Mauch Chunk red shale, in or below which no coal seams of any importance occur. The Pocahontas group, or Lower Pottsville measures, has a thickness of 750 ft. in southern McDowell County, which decreases to about 350 ft. at Prince, on the New River, in Fayette County, 50 miles to the northeast. In this group, at various points, 12 coal beds have been found, of which 4 have been found in workable thickness and are now being mined. The New River group, or Middle Pottsville measures, is just above the Pocahontas group and varies in thickness from 1300 ft. in southern McDowell County to about 700 ft. along New River. At various places, 16 beds of smokeless coal have been identified in this group, of which 5 have been found in workable thickness and are now being mined. A general columnar section of these strata is shown on Fig. 2. The workable seams in these strata, arranged in geological sequence, are as shown on page 77.

Grinding circuits employed in mineral processing operations are designed to produce feed materials for beneficiation steps such as flotation and magnetic separation, which are sufficiently fine to achieve good liberation of valuable minerals from gangue without over- grinding. In many respects, grinding is the most important unit operation in a mineral processing plant. If adequate liberation is not achieved during grinding, subsequent separation steps will yield low metallurgical recoveries and/or product grades. Grinding energy requirements and operating costs typically exceed 50% of the total expenditures of the entire plant. Because grinding is an inherently energy intensive process and grinding circuit capital and operating costs are high, it is essential that such circuits be run as efficiently as possible. In- creased efficiency in grinding usually translates to a decrease in the energy required to produce a metric ton (short ton) of product size material. It is generally accepted in the mineral industry that efficient grinding circuit performance can not be achieved without the use of some form of automatic control. This is true because all circuits are subject to random disturbances which, if left unchecked, will upset circuit performance and rob a plant of productivity. Such disturbances arise from a variety of sources including natural variations in ore characteristics (particularly hardness changes), uncontrolled water additions, feed-rate upsets, changes in crusher performance, and mechanical upsets such as blockages in pumps and classifiers. Many of these disturbances occur with a frequency which is too high for an operator to detect and react to efficiently. Disturbances which occur on a time scale of several minutes up to several hours can be effectively dealt with using automatic control.

Using 5-p Ni powder and 0.018 ,u A1203, oxide dispersion strengthened nickel alloys were prepared by mechanical mixing of powders, followed by compaction, sintering and extrusion. Processing variables such as cooling of the powder during mixing, electrostatic discharging, mixing time, amount of oxide, and so forth, were studied to determine the effects on room-temperature tensile and high-temperature creep-rupture properties and on the reproducibility of alloys. MECHANICAL mixing of metal and metal oxide powders provides one of the simplest and most inexpensive methods for preparing dispersion strengthened metal-metal oxide alloys;" however, because of large differences in specific gravity, powder particle diameters and other variables, difficulties have been encountered in reproducing alloys and alloy properties. Using 5-p Ni powder and 0.018 p A1203, the following variables were investigated: a) Blending techniques b) Blending time c) Volume fraction of oxide for the selected pow- ders d) Sintering of compacts before extrusion Cooling of Powders During Blending— Cremens and Grant had indicated that dry ball milling of the powder mixture gave superior results over other procedures. When ultra-fine metal and oxide powders became available and comminution was unnecessary or offered little gain, the use of dry mixing in a Waring Blendor gave optimum results.' In the current study, observations of the powder mixtures indicated that considerable heat was generated due to the high speed of the Waring Blendor (15,000 rpm). This heating appeared to produce some degree of clustering and pelletizing. To minimize such agglomeration, a Pyrex cooling coil was installed in the mixing vessel. A double coil, water cooled, proved to be quite satisfactory, providing a fair degree of cooling along with good erosion resistance. Discharge of Electrostatic Charge—Electron-microscopy showed that agglomeration was minimized by the cooling procedure but was not entirely eliminated. It appeared that some of the ag- glomeration had to be explained on the basis of an electrostatic attraction due to the high-speed blending operation. These charges had the effect of promoting the growth of alumina clusters. At the end of the blending procedure such clusters had an effective size which was as much as 50 times that of the individual powder particles and were very tightly bunched. Several methods were utilized to try to discharge the electrostatic forces to minimize the clustering. One successful method, utilized in alloy 17, involved continuous exposure during blending to a radium source of 50 millicuries at a distance of 1.5 ft from the container. A number of other methods were noted to work equally well. Fig. 1 shows the more open oxide structure which results from such a treatment, permitting the matrix metal to penetrate into the cluster more effectively. The combination of powder cooling and discharging led to noticeably improved structures. Procedures are presented for determining the hourly production rate, mechanical and physical availability, utilization, use of availability, and global performance factors for the bucket wheel excavator (BWE) itself, as well as for the system composed for the BWE, conveyors, and stacker. An example demonstrates the flow of calculations. Using available data from mines that use BWE technology, the ranges of values of the BWE performance factors are presented in tabular form. They can be used as a guide during mine planning as well as to evaluate existing systems.

The equilibrium relationship of hafnium and tantalum was studied to facilitate alloy and property investigations . The data obtained are presented graphically as the equilibrium diagram . Alloys were prepared from high - purity components by nonconsumabletungsten- electrode arc melting . Data for the equilibrium diagram were obtained by optical pyrometry , metallography , X- ray diffraction of heat treated specimens , X- ray diffraction using a high- temperature camera , and differential thermal analysis . During the investigations , a casting apparatus was constructed , and the existing melting - point apparatus was improved . The bcc allotrope of hafnium forms a continuous series of solid solutions , called beta , with tantalum which exhibit a minimum melting point at 20 wt pct tantalum and 2,110 ° C. At 24 wt pct tantalum and 1,050 ° C , hafnium- rich beta decomposes in a monotectoid reaction to yield alpha and tantalum- rich beta . The monotectoid isotherm extends from 5.5 to 60 wt pct tantalum . The twophase region , in which hafnium- rich and tantalum- rich beta solid solutions are immiscible , rises to a maximum temperature of 1,265 ° C at 38 wt pct tantalum . The solubility of hafnium in tantalum decreases from 40 wt pct at the monotectoid temperature to 20 wt pct at 750 ° C.

Evidence has accumulated indicating that cultural change toward safer workplace behaviors is beginning to occur systematically in the coal industry. Through a range of programmatic mining company successes, enforcement and litigative actions, economic responses to competition and integrated efforts by federal and state agencies, a broader participation of safety and training professionals is being achieved to address prioritized workplace problems at mines. Small steps in workplace-related improvements have been realized already, but the trends in industry safety statistics, coupled with focused programmatic initiatives, indicate that more definitive and systematic steps are occurring to improve safe behavior in the workplace routinely.

"Imaging techniques are applied to multi-crystalline silicon wafers and solar cells throughout the production process. Photoluminescence imaging, both band-to-band and defect-band, is used to characterize defects and wafer quality at all process steps. These steps include bricks sawn from ingots, wafer sawing, cleaning and texturing, emitter diffusion, edge isolation and glass removal, anti-reflective coating/passivation, and metallization of finished cells. Bricks, wafers, and cells can be imaged at a rate commensurate with in-line measurement, giving spatial information to characterize quality and defect content. Photoluminescence images on silicon bricks can be correlated to lifetime measured by photoconductive decay and could be used for high-resolution characterization of material before wafers are cut. The defect areas in as-cut wafers are compared to imaging results from electroluminescence and lock-in thermography, and cell parameters of near-neighbor finished cells, showing correlations to efficiency, open-circuit voltage, and short-circuit current.IntroductionImaging techniques can rapidly characterize material quality and defect density. Photoluminescence (PL) imaging can be applied to silicon from the brick level to all wafer process steps [1-8]. At the brick level, material thickness allows for measurement and correlation to lifetime where surface recombination effects are minimized [6, 7]. At the as-cut wafer level where thin unpassivated wafers prevent accurate lifetime assessment due to surfaces, defects can still be categorized and quantified to predict finished cell performance [3-5]. Defect regions can be identified by recombination-limited band-to-band PL or by defect-band emission [9-12]."

There is a growing interest in recycling/recovery of rare earth elements from permanent magnets. A number of processing techniques are currently being developed but are highly sensitive to the oxidation state of the material. The oxidation microstructure of NdFeB magnets is studied at high temperatures (773-1173 K) to understand oxide formation mechanisms and support the development of viable recycling strategies.

PHYSIOGRAPHICALLY, Mexico provinces, which are, in a manner, distinct economic areas. These may be denominated, (1) the Gulf coastal plain; (2) the Cordilleran plateau; (3) the Sonoran, and (4) the Tehuantepecan province. Fig. 1 shows the approximate boundaries of these provinces. The first is the continuation of the coastal plain of Texas and the Gulf region in general, which, except for prospective oil and lignite, has little of interest for the mining engineer.

Design of the Bajo de la Alumbrera project started in June 1995. Concentrate production began early in the third quarter of 1997. The project is situated in northwestern Argentina. Alumbrera is being developed by Minera Alumbrera, which is owned by MIM Holdings of Australia (50%), North Limited of Australia (25%) and Rio Algom of Canada (25%). Alumbrera is Argentina's first modern copper mine. This article outlines the key process- and plant-layout features that were incorporated in the Alumbrera concentrator design. It explains the background of flowsheet and equipment selection for the plant. A feature of the flowsheet is that it incorporates gravity-gold circuits in both the primary and the regrind circuits for recovery of gold to dore as well as in the copper concentrate product.

Mine waste characterization and risk assessment currently focesses on water quality and largely ignores boththe charteristics of the wastes themselves and how wastes interact with the environment. Characterization of the parameters that control contamination of pore waters and their migration can quantitatively assess risk and remediation strategies in terms of cost effectiveness and risk reduction. Since mine waste characteristics are spatial, geostatistical methods should be used for characterization and assessment. A number of geostatistical methods are reviewed in terms of their application to mine waste sampling, modeling and risk assessment and management.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines conducted a multi-faceted geomechanics research project at a bump-prone longwall coal mine in eastern Kentucky. This mine presented a unique opportunity to study coal mine bumps in that the problem appeared to be confined to areas beneath a sandstone channel of limited areal extent. The Bureau's research plan sought to exploit the uniqueness of the site by monitoring strata behavior and longwall support reactions as the longwall face approached and passed beneath a sandstone channel. The study incorporated static pillar stress and strata deformation measurements, shield support leg pressure measurements, and microseismic monitoring as well as geologic mapping and the collection of observational data. Data collection was underway when a major coal bump occurred on the longwall face at the mine. Pillar behavior (load and deformation), shield loading, and microseismic activity were monitored prior to, during, and after the bump. Observations in the tailgate indicated that these pillars were failing prior to and after the face bump. Shield load data which were evaluated in an effort to identify trends which could be used to forecast coal bumps appear to provide a measure of the effectiveness of destressing operations conducted on the face (e.g. shot firing). Analyses of microseismic data revealed anomalous values associated with microseismic "energy" prior to the face bump. In addition, microseismic source location data and underground observations provided some insight as to the sequence of pillar and face bumps.

"GeneralThe Malartic Gold Fields mill is presently treating ore from four different companies. The ore is delivered by truck, by the shipper, and dumped into the Malartic Gold Fields ore bin. This ore varies in size from 'Run of mine' to minus 8 11, All ore is crushed to pass a 3/ 8 11 x 4 11 cross slotted screen.Weighing and SamplingAfter crushing the ore passes over an adequate-weigher (250 T .P.H. capacity) on its way to the fine ore bins. This weigher has a remote counter at the sampling point.A 36” Vezin sampler cuts 15% from the ore stream as it enters the mill bins. This portion is elevated, by means of a short belt conveyor, to feed the No. 2 Vezin sampler. (This elevation is necessary to give headroom for the following machines). The ore on the conveyor is levelled to give a uniform stream to the second sample cutter. The second, third and fourth cutters are 2411 •The No. 2 Vezin sampler cuts 19% from its feed and this portion falls directly into a 1611 x 1011 Denver rolls crusher. This crusher reduces the ore to -1/ 8 11 , approximately. The discharge from the rolls crusher falls on a revolving circular plate with scraper, which gives a uniform stream to the No. 3 Vezin sampler.The No. 3 Vezin cuts 10% from its feed. This portion falls on another revolving plate to give a uniform stream to feed No. 4 Vezin."

Heavy minerals recovered from recently discovered deposits in the Murray Basin are proving to be somewhat more difficult to process into saleable ilmenite products than ilmenites from existing operations. This is due to the nature of the gangue minerals present, the impurities in the valuable minerals and the size distribution of the mineral assemblages. Ilmenite product quality, in particular, can be adversely affected by any of these factors. Over the past two years the authors have been involved in assessing the potential to manufacture ilmenite products from a variety of mineral sand deposits in the Murray Basin. The steps undertaken to define the potential products and develop suitable flowsheets have evolved in parallel to the exploration efforts, in cooperation with companies undertaking exploration in the Murray Basin. A combination of an understanding of detailed mineralogy, application of magnetic fractionation and modification of magnetic susceptibility of the ilmenites has in all cases, been successful in improving ilmenite product quality. The targeting of particular ilmenites to specific downstream processes for TiO2 pigment manufacture is the most challenging aspect of this development.

"Based on the principle of carbon balance, a model was built to calculate C02 emissions of each process and correspondingly the total course of production in iron and steel making. The data from a typical integrated steelworks in China was applied in the model. The results show that the BF and coking process account for the most emissions. Generally, C02 emissions in integrated steelworks depend on three factors, resources utilization efficiency, energy utilization efficiency and energy consumption structure, which were considered in an equation in this paper. Especially, General Emission Factor (GEF) was proposed to assess the relationship between C02 emissions and energy consumption. The results show that, higher GEF will result in more C02 emissions with the same energy consumption and in iron and steel making, the optimization of energy structure and development of eco-industrial park both have significant benefit on the carbon reduction.IntroductionThe Global Warming resulting from the increase of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs), especially C02, in the atmosphere has become the main reason of global climate change, and the carbon reduction is one of the most important ways for the sustainable development [1]. The iron and steel making is a manufacturing industry based on iron-coal high temperature chemical process, in which plenty of C02 is emitted. According to the data from IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) in 2001, iron and steel making emitted about 650 million tons ofC02 every year, which is the fourth largest industry of the fossil energy consumption [2]. According to the data from EEA (European Enviromnent Agency) in 2006, iron and steel making is the largest source ofC02 emissions, which accounted for about 18% of the total C02 emissions in European manufacturing industry [3].It is estimated that the application of various well developed energy-saving technology, such as Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ), Top Pressure Recovery Turbine (TRT) and Coal Moisture Control (CMC), can make the C02 emissions reduced by 0.5%-3% in iron and steel making, and the further C02 emissions reduction can be achieved if more new energy saving technology is applied, such as sintering plant heat recovery, electricity generation with steam generated from converter and the various by-products gas and the hydrogen making process from COG[4,5]. In addition, the application of membrane separation technology is well expected in iron and steel making [6]. For example, the application of C02 Capture and Storage (CCS) in blast furnace combined with the Pure Oxygen Top Gas Recycled BF (TGRBF) technology can reduce the C02 ennss10ns greatly by about 50%-60% [4].That is, as a kind of C02 end-treatment technology, CCS applied with other technology of C02 recovery would be more meaningful. Actually, reduction of the C02 emissions by changing the structure of energy consumption and raw materials with new process of iron and steel making, such as direct reduction process or smelting reduction process [4,7,8], is the trend of ferrous metallurgical engineering, which is regarded as a kind of source-treatment technology. In this sense, source-treatment technology is more pivotal for the solution of carbon reduction in the future than the current popular energy saving technology. Hence, it is necessary to build the C02 emissions model based on the iron and steel making process and evaluate the relationship between the energy saving and C02 emission reduction."

The current quantity of rejects from coal beneficiation in Australia represents 20 to 25% of raw black coal production. Approximately 80% of the rejects are derived from coarse processing for particles in the 200mm to 0.5mm size range. The safe and enviornmentally acceptable storage of coarse coal rejects is of interest to coal mining companies. Additional public benefit would be derived from the utilisation of a waste product as a source of fill material for civil and mining engineering applications. BHP Engineering has taken a leading role in the design for storage and utilisation of coarse rejects from two mines associated with the Broken Hill Proprietary Conipany Ltd. The tailings dam at Stockton Borehole Colliery (N.S.W.) is to be raised and a study by BHP Engineering has shown that coarse rejects are suitable for the formation of the supporting embankment surrounding a compacted clay core. Transportation and storage of coarse rejects at the Thiess Dampier Mitsui Riverside Mine (Moranbah, Qld) is achieved by a conveyor leading directly from the coal preparation plant to a discharge stacker on the crest of the rejects stockpile. Production of coarse rejects was higher than anticipated for the initial dump design. BHP Engineering has completed a review of dump design with emphasis on safe operating conditions for the conveyors and stacker system. Data on the geotechnical properties of coarse rejects from Australian coal mines are presented. Coarse coal rejects are a material which should not be considered as waste, but as a potentially valuable resource for many future applications. Appropriate engineering design for the storage and utilisation of coarse rejects would result in an improved environment and economic benefits for the Community.

The fundamentals of vertical-lift performance are examined with the aid of computer-calculated flowing gradient charts. Flowing and gas-lift well performance characteristics are determined from available well test data. The effect of tubing size, gas-liquid ratio and wellhead pressure is discussed for both flowing and gas-lift wells. The effect of gas-injection pressure, formation gas, bottom-hole pressure and valve spacing is also discussed for gas lift wells. From these studies conclusions may be reached for improving or prolonging natural flow, obtaining optimum lift efficiency when natural flow ceases and improving existing gas-lift systems. The techniques perfected satisfy the requirement that the time involved to conduct an evaluation be practical for operating personnel. INTRODUCTION Flowing pressure gradients furnish the key to successful evaluation of vertical-lift performance in producing wells. Command of multiphase flow gradients in some readily usable form is a necessity before operating personnel can competently include vertical-lift performance evaluation of both flowing and artificial-lift wells in their over-all consideration of production efficiency. A readily usable form cannot be overemphasized since most of the decisions which confront the production engineer with a problem well must be made quickly. In moving a barrel of oil from the reservoir to the stock tank, the major portion of energy generally is expended in the vertical-lift phase. This may or may not be of concern during the flowing life of a well, depending upon the production requirements. It becomes of some concern when the flow performance of the well becomes erratic, and a conscious effort must be made to maintain natural flow. It is at this time that the first steps may be taken to modify existing conditions to relieve unnecessary limitations to proper flow. When natural flow ceases and some form of artificial lift must be installed, the amount of energy expended in lifting liquids becomes quite obvious. It is at this time, if no other, that lifting efficiency becomes important because that part which must be supplied from an outside source is now related directly as a cost per barrel of oil produced. Ten years ago, the majority of gas-lift wells were produced with gas-well gas. Today, the majority are produced by closed rotative gas-lift systems. This permits a direct evaluation of well performance in terms of horsepower requirements and has resulted in mixed conclusions as to the success of gas lift based upon the relative efficiency of a particular system. An increased awareness of the need to resolve vertical-lift performance on a readily usable, scientific basis was inevitable. An indication of the need for better applied science in this field is the often-asked question of whether or not gas-lift can efficiently deplete a given well or reservoir. This question cannot possibly be answered without first evaluating reservoir, surface and vertical-lift performance both as encountered today and as anticipated throughout the life of the well or wells. The technique presented in this paper was originally developed to upgrade gas-lift installation design from an applied art to an applied science. It has since been successfully used not only for this purpose, but also for the whole field of vertical-lift performance in its broadest sense. Lift efficiency should be considered important while the well is still flowing, as well as after natural flow ceases. Correct interpretation and proper modification of the vertical-lift performance of a producing well can provide dramatic improvement in production performance and/or efficiency. STATEMENT OF THEORY AND DEFINITIONS Fig. 1 illustrates the three divisions of production which will be used in this paper. The terms are a modified version of those presented in the very fine paper by Gilbert.' The fields of reservoir and surface performance both have been greatly improved over the years. A study of those writings which may be found indicates that the field of vertical-lift performance has not progressed as well. There are two possible reasons for this lack of progress. 1. It has not been recognized as a scientific field in itself by the oil companies, as has reservoir engineering. 2. The equipment companies have confined their efforts to mechanical design research rather than the more basic study of vertical-lift performance of producing wells. Both organizations must have an economic stimulus for doing research in this field, and most of the results obtained in past work has been so erratic as to arouse little enthusiasm. The basic purpose of interpreting vertical-lift performance is to predict operating conditions below the surface of the ground from available data. A graphical technique by which the operating points for a two-fan ventilation system can be represented as the intersection of the modified fan curves is described. In constructing the diagram, the air quantities associated with the fans are considered to be independent variables and used as the axes of a rectangular coordinate system. The diagram may include, in addition to the modified fan curves, contour lines for resistances, pressures, and air powers. Procedures for drawing the diagram are discussed and illustrated with an example of the ventilation system.

A significant portion of the contribution that we make as a professional society is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2012 Transactions is the third Transactions to take advantage of new publication technologies. It is available solely as an online subscription. The new format better suits the way this material is used and, ultimately, better enables the transfer and dissemination of knowledge. The 2012 Transactions contains some of the most interesting research from the past year, including a paper on the uranium boom in Namibia, work on improving the safety of coal pillar extraction, ways to improve the optimization and efficiency of various mine activities and the newest research from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The 2012 Transactions consists of a total of 67 technical papers (550 pages, including index), including all 18 papers published in 2012 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 64) and all 31 papers published in 2012 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 29). Additionally, this volume contains 18 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All 67 technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2012 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.
