The thickness of the coal seam is one of the more important items influencing the productivity and general overall efficiency of operation 1 of a coal mine. The average thickness of coal seams mined in the United States decreased 2 inches between 1950 and 1955 to an average of 62 inches, which also is 3 inches less than the 65 inches in 1945. The decrease in thickness is due partly to the increased production from strip mines with thinner seams and partly to the increased percentage of total production at underground mines in certain States having thinner seams. The thickness of seams at auger mines was measured for the first time in 1955 and was 53 inches. Though bituminous coal and lignite is mined today from seams of exceedingly variable thickness -less than 2 feet to ore than 50 feet -a large majority of the production, 65 percent in 1955, came from seams 3 to 6 feet thick. This is not surprising since the coal seam of moderate thickness presents the least mining difficulties.

This is an introductory paper on a new method of prospecting for mineral deposits which has been developed by Scintrex Limited. The method, which we call Luminex, for luminescent mineral exploration, is based on time- resolved mineral luminescence created by an ultraviolet light source. It has the ability to detect and resolve a group of key minerals which are either ore minerals themselves, or more often, are accessory or pathfinder minerals for certain types of economic ore deposits. Fortunately, these minerals are commonly found at the earth's surface, even in areas of considerable weathering. The method extends the range of mineral deposits which are remotely detectable from the air to include those such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, gold and bedded lead-zinc deposits and, is therefore, a natural supplement to our three classical methods of airborne geophysics.

STRUCTURAL steels containing chromium have become widely used in the last 20 years. In the earlier part of this period the major applications were in chromium-molybdenum aircraft tubing and similar special high-strength steels. During the past 10 years there has been a notable expansion in the use of chromium-bearing steel for structural purposes when welding was utilized for fabrication. The chromium-bearing steels introduced by Saklatwalla1 (chromium-copper), Kinzel2 (chromium-manganese-silicon), and Schultz3 (chromium-copper) are being extensively used at the present time.

The environmental, social and governance (ESG) obligations of mining companies promote the consideration of water and land resources as well as the post-mining employment opportunities following the cessation of mining operations. This work aims to outline the potential for a mining operation to use their brackish mine water resources to support microalgae production, generating high-quality organic carbon sources to support their mine rehabilitation and closure outcomes. Microalgae production is an established commercial process for high-value products including vitamins, cosmetics and food supplements. On mine sites, microalgae production offers several major environmental and social opportunities: (i) carbon capture, (ii) metalliferous water treatment, (iii) acid mine drainage prevention, (iv) beneficial reuse of brackish mine water, (v) accelerated soil formation and (vi) post-mining employment (Levett et al, 2023).

The boron review did not arrive in time for publication in the June issue. The United States was the world's largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1992. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled 1Mt (1.1 million st) in 1992, yielding 521 kt (574,000 st) of B203 for a total estimated value of $333 million. That was about 20% less than 1991 revised production figures, and less in value by $107 million. The United States continues to provide essentially all of its own boron supply while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid to foreign markets. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1992 was about 900 people, the same as in 1991. In 1988, 1250 people worked in the boron industry. The Bureau estimated that total world production of boron in 1992 was about 3 Mt (3.3 million st), or about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st)of B2O3. World production in 1992 was about equal to revised 1991 levels. The electric arc furnace process is a common method to produce high TiO2 slag from ilmenite. The pre-reduction process was proposed in recent years in order to reduce electricity consumption. In order to enhance the pre-reduction degree, high energy ball milling was proposed to improve the specific surface area of the ilmenite prior to reduction. In this study, the carbothermic reduction behavior of milled ilmenite concentrate was investigated. It was found that the ball milling method can result in a higher reduction rate and improved metallization of iron. The metallization of iron increased with increasing the time of ball milling. The metallization of iron with milling reached 89.49% when the time of ball milling was 70 min., while the FeO content decreased with 70 min. of milling from 11.84% to 4.76%.

The flotation performance of kaolinite in laboratory micro-flotation was investigated with 3- (dodecyloxy) propan-1-amine (ON12) as the collector. Compared with dode cylamine (DDA), which is commonly used as the bauxite reverse flotation collector, ON12 shows stronger collecting ability for kaolinite than using the same amounts of DDA, when experimental pH value reaches more than 6. With the addition of ON12, the isoelectric point of kaolinite shifts to 6.1 from 3.6, which suggests a strong adsorption between kaolinite and ON12. Infrared spectra analysis indicates that the type of ON12 adsorbed on the kaolinite surface is mainly of electrostatic adsorption. Molecular dynamics simulation further indicate that electrostatic adsorption of ON12 cation on kaolinite (001) surface based on electrostatic interaction between NH4+ and O atoms. ON12 will be suitable for bauxite reverse flotation with the efficiency depressors of the diaspora.

The deep sea hydrothermal deposits are one of the most prospecting resources, and various works to develop these mines are now underway. There are also various methods for the pre-site survey of the mines: acoustic survey, electro-magnetic survey, and others. However, as a precise method at the final survey, drilling/coring is indispensable to confirm the three-dimensional distribution and to grasp the dignity of the ores for the final decision of industrialization. This drilling/coring at the final survey is done at many points with distance of 15~25m between each point for on-land deposits. This means that 1km by 1km square area requires (1,000m/25m)2 ~ (1,000m/15m)2 = 1,600 ~ 4,500 holes. The drilling/coring depths will be around 30m or more for the hydrothermal deposits. This depth seems very shallow, but because the stratum is very brittle and is very difficult to core, the average core recovery ratio is around 50%, and 0% core recovery happens very often. Thus, the indispensable work of coring for grasping the dignity of ores is a very difficult work although the coring depth is shallow, and also the required number of holes is enormous. Conventional drilling/coring method on the ocean is to use drillship. However, the cost is very huge. Recently a new technique has come out which is to use remotely controlled drilling machine on seafloor. This machine seems to have a very good performance. However, it is reported that the available inclination of the seafloor where the machine sits on must be less than 15 degrees. The sea floor inclinations of active hydrothermal vents area are usually very steep and slopes of 45 degrees or more are prevailing and it seems very hard to carry out drilling/coring for the machine at these steep slopes, although it is impossible to mine the ore at these areas because the temperature is too high to work there. The inclination of the sea floor at the dead or paused hydrothermal vents area where ore recovery is possible may be not so steep, and the machine may work well. However, the required number of holes is still a very heavy burden. In order to solve these problems, the author proposes a new concept of drilling/coring system operated from a conventional research ship. This concept is still a desk plan, but the author wants to realize this system at any means.

The stability of surface slopes undergoing subsidence due to longwall mining was investigated to examine the effect the subsidence had on the stability of the slopes. Stability analyses were performed on all slopes along both longitudinal and transeverse sections of the longwall panel before and after subsidence. Both finite- and infinite-slope analyses were performed with both drained and undrained cases. The results indicated that the changes in the stability of slopes due to subsidence were insignificant for the cases analyzed. Although significant lateral ground movements were recorded, these were not attributed to slope failure. Explanations for these movements are presented in the paper.

"CuInS2 thin films solar cells have drawn much attention for their low-cost, stability and high conversion efficiency. The electrodeposition of Cu-In precursor films, as the first step in making CuinS2 solar cells electrochemically in the air-and water-stable ionic liquid based on choline chloride/urea eutectic mixture has been investigated at constant potential. Compared with aqueous electrolytes, the large electrochemical window as well as the high thermal stability of this ionic liquid allow the direct electrodeposition of Cu-In precursor films. Then the precursor films were sulfuretted in a tube furnace at different sulfurization temperatures to optimize the films properties. The films obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).IntroductionCuInS2 is one of the most prospective absorber materials for low cost thin film solar cells, with a high conversion efficiency that exceeds 32% in terms of theory and nearly 13% in laboratory level [1-2]. In addition to its long-term stability, CuinS2 has a band gap energy Eg ranging from 1.3 to 1.55 eV and an optimal optical absorption coefficient reaching 105cm-1 [3-4]. CuinS2 thin films have been prepared by several methods such as spray pyrolysis [5-6], r.f.sputtering [7], vacuum evaporation [8-9] and electrodeposition. Comparing with vacuum methods, electrodeposition has lots of advantages such as less energy consumption, preparation big area thin film, stable system and enabling cheaper films.The electrodeposition of most technologically important metals has been shown to be possible from a wide range of ionic liquids. These ionic liquids are currently applied in a wide variety area. It is reported that the cell efficiency of chalcopyrite absorber layer (CIS, CISeS, and CIGS) via an electrodeposition route in laboratory condition has reached 11.3% [10]. Copper and indium alloy film is regarded as important precursor for the production of compound semiconductors with sulfur. The electrodeposition of the alloy film from room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) has not been widely investigated. Only few alloy films, such as ZnTe, CdTe, GaAs and AlSb have been electrodeposited."

"A systematic study of the structure-mechanical properties relationship is reported for nanolayered composites of MoSh-SiC, Mo-MoSh, Mo-MoShNx, MoSi2-MoSi2Nx, and Mo-MoShMoSi2Nx (x=3-4) synthesised by sputtering techniques. These composites have been studied by nano-indentation and cross-sectional TEM as a function of annealing temperature. As-deposited layers are amorphous except for Mo. With increasing annealing temperature, first MoSh and then SiC crystallize, while the hardness progressively increases until the layers start to spheroidize and grain growth sets in at 900ºC. For the case of Mo-MoSi2, the layers react and the composite deteriorates rapidly. However, MoSi2Nx remains amorphous up to 1000ºC, suggesting that it could act as a diffusion barrier between Mo and MoSi2. In fact the Mo. MoSi2Nx, MoSi2-MoSi2Nx and Mo-MoSi2-MoSi2Nx nanolayers are found to remain stable up to such temperatures. IntroductionMolybdenum dislicide, MoSh, is a potential matrix material for high temperature structural composites due to its high melting point and good oxidation resistance at elevated temperature [1]. The two major drawbacks for structural applications are inadequate high temperature strength and poor low temperature ductility. Silicon Carbide (SiC) being hard and thermally compatible with most ceramics and intermetallic compounds, has been found to be suitable for second phase reinforcement in various structural applications and, in particular, the addition of SiC whiskers improves the high temperature yield strength of MoSi2 [2]. While most of the research in MoSb-SiC composites has been on the particulate form of SiC, laminated composites may offer unique properties. It has been shown that synthetic multilayers with alternating layers of metal and/or compounds may exhibit interesting mechanical properties [3]. Enhancement in mechanical properties by decreasing the wavelength of multilayer spacing has been studied extensively. In general, two types of strengthening have been proposed: (1) Hall-Petch strengthening [4,5], where the strength increase is inversely proportional to the square root of the layer thickness; (2) Koehler modulus strengthening [6], which increases with modulus difference and decreasing layer thickness. In the present study, we have performed a systematic study of the relationship between strength and structure in a number of different nanolayered systems based on MoSh. Layer thicknesses have been varied and their nanostructures have been varied by heat treatment. Previous work on MoSi2-SiC is summarized [7]. In an attempt to improve fracture toughness, MoSh-Mo nanolayered materials have been prepared but are found to react and deteriorate. Previous work has shown that nitrided MoSi2 (MoSi2Nx with x=3-4) is highly stable [8] and so nanolayered composites of MoSi2-MoSi2Nx and Mo-MoSi2-MoSi2Nx have been prepared to assess the' stability and mechanical properties of these composites. In recent years the hue and cry of American industry concerning the pressure of foreign competition on the domestic marketplace has become all too familiar to most of us, as we are all well aware, the steel industry has not been exempted from this pressure, reduced production levels, work force cutbacks, and in some extreme cases, plant closings and company liquidations have resulted, new regulations governing imports and quotas have been enacted, foreign trade agreements reached, and more strict regulation enforcement practices undertaken, despite these, and other measures, the impact of aggressive foreign competition has not lessened, the concensus of numerous management consultants is that in order to successfully cope with these problems we must draw on all available technology to provide the tools which will enable us to enhance our management effectiveness, one area requiring particularly close attention in any mining operation is that of managing critical resources - namely time, energy and equipment in a fast and efficient manner, In mining, with critical resources deployed over a large geographical area, any degree of success involved with resource management is dependent upon knowing the current status of all work related activities, if we, as mine operators, are to be more successful in this area, additional tools are a necessity and modern technology has provided a multitude of new options from which to choose.

SOLUBLE silver salts are effective activators for flotation of sphalerite with potassium ethyl xanthate as collector.' Since sphalerite takes up large quantities of silver ions rapidly," investigation of this system appeared fruitful for studying the mechanism of sphalerite activation and deactivation. Experimental data presented here comprise studies of the mechanism and rates of activation and deactivation of sphalerite with silver and cyanide ions. A 20-lb sample of sphalerite from Ottawa County, Oklahoma, was handpicked, crushed, screened, hydrosized to produce a 65/100-mesh fraction, and purified by electrostatic separation. The sphalerite was then leached with benzene and absolute ethyl alcohol to remove possible organic contaminants and with 0.1 M NaCN to remove any copper that might have been picked up during screening. The benzene had been specially purified by grinding with fine sphalerite for 12 hr to remove trace impurities that might have had a specific affinity for sphalerite. Finally, the mineral was washed, dried in flowing nitrogen, and stored in large ground-glass stoppered weighing bottles under a small nitrogen pressure.

For the purpose of this paper a junction box is defined as " a fused switch, inclosed in an explosion-proof compartment, provided with a ready means of connecting or disconnecting a trailing cable without exterior arcing." Junction boxes are intended for use 'at the end of trailing cables and are usually placed outby the last open break through in a coal mine. Where it is not safe to supply current through nips or a trolley, junction boxes suitably spaced along an entry permit tramming and movement of machines with safety, although not with any considerable speed. Junction boxes serve a threefold purpose: (1) They prevent dangerous arcing at the outby end of trailing cables; (2) they afford a safe, practical means of fusing or otherwise protecting the trailing cable; and (3) they provide an efficient means of transmitting power from the power circuit to the trailing cable. The first purpose is the most important from a safety standpoint. Dangerous arcing-that is, arcing capable of igniting gas-frequently takes place where trailing cab1c.s are attached to the power circuit. At either 250 or 500 volts only a very small arc is required to ignite mine gas. The usual method of connecting the trailing cable to the power circuit by cable nips or trolley taps does not make a good electrical connection; hence arcing may be expected at any time. Furthermore, junction boxes eliminate the personal hazard attendant upon the use of trolley taps by removing the possibility of accidental contact with trolley hooks or wire and the liability to injury due to manipulation of the device. In the general scheme of mine ventilation it is assumed that gas will not accumulate where junction boxes are placed, an assumption based on the normal operation of the ventilating system. In many

The DEAREX knowledge acquisition and engineering system is a teaching and exploration tool designed to facilitate the under- standing and development of expert systems by explorationists without the aid of a knowledge engineer and without recourse to expert system languages. To fulfill its objective, the DEAREX system considers the selection of exploration methods in desert areas. The system consists of three parts: 1. A tutorial which introduces the basic and selected advanced concepts of expert systems, 2. A sample program illustrating how an expert system works and can be used, and, most importantly, 3. A knowledge acqusition and engineering program which enables users to develop their own expert systems. The tutorial provides a brief and concise introduction to expert systems, a 10 rule exploration example which defines, explains and illustrates the basic concepts and design of expert systems, and a glossary of expert system terms including cross references. The sample program is a larger, self contained example of an expert system with some commentary illustrating addition- al expert system concepts and the role of the knowledge engineer in particularizing rules and ascertaining the knowledge base. Restricting itself to the selection of exploration methods in desert areas, the knowledge acquisition and engineering program questions the user and converts the answers into an expert system. Questions pertain to geology, infrastructure, availability of instrumentation, personnel, etc. Additional information may also included. In conclusion, some salient points concerning knowledge engineering toolkits, shells and knowledge acquisition capabilities such as contained in DEAREX are discussed.

High quality quartz crystals weighing more than 50 grams are required in several important industrial applications.30,31 Primarily, they are the basic raw material for precision, electronic, frequency control components; this includes oscillators and filters in both radio and telephone services. Quartz crystals are also necessary for optical lenses and prisms in special applications requiring high ultraviolet light-transmission as in spectrographs. Quartz wedges are regular components for petrographic microscopes. The application of crystalline quartz as a transducer* in ultrasonic devices has increased in recent years despite strong competition from barium titanate and magnetostrictive [f] devices. Some quartz is fabricated into delay lines for radar. Man has valued quartz for fabrication of art objects since the dawn of history. The art forms were and are painstakingly carved and polished to form intricate figurines, bowls, statuettes, and the well-known crystal balls. The largest known ball, made of perfect quartz from Burma, is now in the National Museum in Washington. It is 12 7/8 in. in diameter and weighs 106 lb 12 oz. Clear, pure quartz chips and small crystals not meeting the electronic-grade dimensional requirements are known by the Brazilian term lasca. They are used to produce fused quartz having wide application in laboratory equipment, as special glasses, for torsion suspension in scientific instruments, and as a source material for growing large artificial quartz crystals 18,35 Electronic applications far exceed all other uses in importance so any discussion of high-quality quartz crystals must be concerned almost exclusively with those functions. Historical Background Because of their ubiquitous character and natural beauty, quartz crystals have long been of interest and known to man. They have been found among early Egyptian and Chinese art forms and the Sumerians are believed to have fashioned seals, beads, and other jewelry from quartz crystals, perhaps 5,000 years ago. Also, American Indians made arrow heads and fashioned some simple objects of different kinds. The origin of the name quartz, although of Greek derivation, is uncertain. The Greeks appropriately applied their word for frozen water or ice, krustallos, to quartz. The present-day, large-scale practical applications of quartz crystals began in 1880-1881 when Pierre and Jacques Curie reported discovery of the "piezoelectric" effect. They found this effect first in Rochelle salt, a common product of grape-wine refineries, while studying crystal symmetry. Piezoelectricity is that property found in certain crystals, including quartz, whereby electrical charges of equal and opposite sign appear on opposite parts of the crystals when they are stressed. If equal and opposite forces are applied to two opposing prism edges of a single untwinned quartz crystal a positive electrical charge will appear on one edge and a negative charge on the other. The amount of the charges will be directly proportional to the force applied. This property seems to be intimately related to pyroelectricity

The Upper Triassic Leigh Creek Coal Measures which include a number of seams of sub-bituminous black coal are preserved in four small intramontane basins. The largest is Telford Basin, 1,000 m in thickness. The coals, of variable thickness and quality, are mined by open cast mining methods and utilised for generation of electricity at Port Augusta. The combined proven and indicated reserves are about 100 million tonnes.
