Although hydrocarbons accounted for more than 60% of Bahrain's income and more than 80% of export earnings, this island nation sustained one of the more diversified economies in the Gulf Region. The availability of low-cost natural gas for electric power has fostered the development of a significant aluminum refining and manufacturing industry with emphasis on vertical integration. The Bahraini iron pelletization plant, closed since 1986 due to financial problems, was scheduled to reopen by early 1989. Commodity Review Metals.-Aluminum.-Aluminium Bah-rain Bsc (Alba) attained record high production levels in 1988 taking advantage of favorable aluminum prices, which averaged over $2,000 per ton as compared with less than $1,500 per ton in 1987. Net aluminum production was nearly 13,000 tons over design capacity. Fewer standard ingots (52,081 tons as compared with 79,685 in 1987) were produced as Alba concentrated on higher value added products such as rolling ingots (42,324 tons as compared with 32,125 tons) and extrusion billets (60,934 tons as compared with 46,618 tons).

The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple compared to the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve the understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instances, more of an art than a science. In order to minimize the risk factors in the construction and operation of large scale slurry systems, studies are frequently conducted in pilot scale test loops such as the one at the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute. The pilot scale projects are designed to provide the basic engineering data necessary to design slurry transport pipeline systems. Usually three slurry solid concentrations are pumped at various line velocities and optimum slurry densities and velocities are determined. Critical velocities, friction head losses, power requirements, and so forth, are also determined from measurements and calculations. Wear tests are also strongly recommended and anticipated pipe wear rates in inches per million tons of solids reported.

In January 1999, a redesign of the Kennecott Flash Converting furnace settler was initiated to enhance furnace integrity and extend furnace life. This furnace uses Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting technology to produce copper directly from copper matte. A detailed assessment was made of all technology available around the world before making a decision on the design features to be incorporated in the new design. The new design includes the following: redesign of all sidewall cooling elements to include the latest cooling element technology; redesign of the furnace hearth to include a stadium hearth at the reaction shaft end of the furnace; redesign of the furnace hearth to include a stepped hearth design adjacent to the furnace sidewalls; addition of flat settler roof cooling elements .around the reaction shaft; replacement of reaction shaft transition elements with an improved design and improvements to the furnace cooling element monitoring systems. The Flash Converting furnace was shut down on a planned basis in July 2001 to implement these improvements after 29 months of operation, converting more than 1,000,000 tonnes of matte. During the 30 day shut down, the improvements were successfully completed, with furnace start up in August 2001

The water resource is key to survival of the mankind and this resource is now becoming critical in many parts of globe including India. As per an assessment of Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) of India, a huge shortfall of about 58 billion m3 of water is anticipated by the year 2050. In order to counter this shortfall, there is thrust from Government of India to adopt water conservation measures. National Environment Policy, 2006 of Government of India also stresses upon the need to take up water conservation measures for water security of the country. The coal mines in India provide an excellent opportunity to take up water conservations measures therein. The mine water is not acidic unlike western countries and it conforms to the prescribed regulatory standards. This nature?s gift is utilized in Coal India Limited by allowing mine voids to get filled with mine water. The net recharge potential of the opencast mining area is found to be about 5% in comparison to 2% in non-mining area offering good prospects for ground water recharge. The seasonal rainwater is also diverted into mine voids left at the end of mining operations which act as huge reservoirs/ pit lakes for storage of the water. They also serve as surface water bodies for recharging of water table in the surrounding areas. The area and space left from where coal has been extracted completely in underground mines and will not be entered by any man or machinery after the extraction, called goaf, are also potential source of water conservation. These additional water resources created are being utilized for meeting the industrial, domestic, irrigation and other requirements of the projects and local communities eliminating the need to tap other fresh water resources including ground water. Presently, 75% of the water demand of the coal mining project is being met from the water stored in the mine pits. In future, CIL is likely to create about 3.3 billion m3 of water resource, on an average, in its opencast mines alone. In the mine closure plan of opencast mines, the last cut is proposed to be developed into water body for recharge of ground water and creating additional water resources. A clean potential source of potable water is thus developed after mine closure. This will ensure water security of the country.

The Privateer is the major mine of the Zeballos mining camp; with a total production from May 1937 through the first half of 1946 of $5; 610; 423 from 139; 254 tons of ore. This includes a small production from the connected Prident mine. The entire operation was closed from October 1943 to November 1945.

The purification of iron ores by means of hand magnets dates back more than 100 years. The first record in the United States Patent Office of a machine for the magnetic separation of ores shows that on Feb. 20, 1849, U.S. Patent 6121 was issued to Ransom Cook for improvement in electromagnetic ore separators. The patent covered the use of a revolving cylinder, or drum, with poles of electromagnets in its periphery for the purpose of separating magnetic oxide of iron from substances with which it might be associated, by causing the electrornagnets when revolving as component parts of the cylinder to be successively charged to take up the ore and discharged to part with it. Since this patent was issued the science and technique of magnetism have advanced more than most other fields of endeavor. The development of electrical machinery has required and obtained better and better magnetic materials, and the science of applied magnetism is as completely and satisfactorily developed as any branch of physics. Nevertheless, the patent of Ransom Cook, issued in 1849, comes close to covering everything that is now being applied in magnetic separation. The cynic may conclude that this proves the uselessness of modern science and may point in confirmation to flotation, which has grown in a few years, practically without benefit of science, to be the most versatile and useful of concentration methods. On more careful study, however, it appears that an accurate determination of the magnetic properties of minerals and their amenability to control by mechanical and heat treatments has not heretofore been made. The first essential, therefore, in the design of improved magnetic separators has been missing. In spite of this hiatus in scientific data inventors have been busy, and patents are on file covering mineral separations by means of nearly all known magneto-mechanical effects. WORK in recent years1-' has indicated a complexity of the processes of deformation of metal crystals not previously appreciated and not fully accounted for by any hypothesis so far advanced. Furthermore, the nature and mechanism of formation of nuclei of recrystallization have not been determined precisely. The deformation of single crystals of zinc has been studied frequently, but the purity of the zinc and the perfection of the specimens sometimes have been given little consideration. Methods have been developed recently that readily yield zinc single-crystal specimens of high quality.5 In the present work, such specimens were deformed in various ways under various conditions, and deformed specimens were annealed to obtain information regarding recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth. The paper attempts to correlate and evaluate previous data, as well as to present new data, in order to determine areas in which more detailed work might be done most profitably. Tests at temperatures from the freezing point (419.46°C) to room temperature revealed glide only on basal planes in a close-packed direction (100)*, as reported by Mark, Polanyi, and Schmid6 and others. Markings probably similar to those observed by Kolesnikov7 and Boas and Schmid8 were noted in specimens stretched at elevated temperatures, but it seemed clear that these were not caused by prismatic or pyramidal slip (see second paragraph of section on Phenomena Involving Bending of the Basal Plane). Twinning Twinning on the octahedral plane of a face-centered cubic metal has been pictured as a process of simple homogeneous shearing along that plane in a [112] direction. It was recognized by Mathewson and Phillipsv and others""" that the (102) twinning of zinc required a somewhat more complex mechanism and might be considered as a homogeneous shearing of (102) planes in a [211] direction plus slight adjustments of atoms to positions of greater stability or lower energy, or as a single movement of each of the atoms in the same sense into the final positions. Gough and Cox" modified Mathewson's mechanism to obtain a more stable lattice configuration, but it is not clear that they succeeded, and their mechanism requires movement of some of the atoms in a sense opposite to that of the overall twinning movement. They also suggested that twinning may occur as a result of previous basal slip. This conclusion was based on the observation that twinning caused by alternating torsion was clearest and most profuse at positions for maximum basal slip rather than for maximum stress on (102) planes in the close-packed direction (not the twinning direction), and no mechanism was described. It might be wondered whether resolution of stresses on the twinning plane in the twinning direction would have afforded a simpler explanation. If twinning is essentially a simple homogeneous shearing along the twinning plane, it would seem that twins should grow by a smooth, continuous mechanism, and, indeed, that a simple reversal of stresses should reverse the shearing and de-twin the crystal. Cylindrical tablets 1/8 to 1/4 in. thick were cleaved from singlle-crystal specimens and were squeezed, perpendicular to a second-order prism plane, to give a tensile stress perpendicular to a first-order prism plane. A "click" was heard and a thin, needle-like twin appeared on the basal cleavage face. If squeezing was continued smoothly, the twin, viewed at magnifications up to X500, grew smoothly and quietly (fig. 1). X-ray examination verified that the twinning was of the (102) type. Rotating the compression axis 90" to reverse the stress then caused a smooth, continuous shrinkage and ultimate disappearance of the twin (fig. 2). The squeezing also caused a rumpling of the basal

Several significant past and present producers of high grade and bulk tonnage gold ore from southeastern California and southwestern Arizona can be empirically and genetically linked to regional peraluminous magmatism which occurred during the late Cretaceous and early Tertiary. Geological relationships and geochemical characteristics from the Fortuna Mine area will be described and compared to those of the Tumco Mines area. Each of these historical gold producers is viewed as a morphologic end member in otherwise genetically linked metallogeny. Cold-quartz veins at Fortuna can be directly linked to peraluminous pegmatites both physically and mineralogically. Silica-magnetite±spidote±garnet rock which occurs as relatively barren, discontinuous, foliation- parallel horizons at Fortuna, but as high grade gold ore at Tumco, is interpreted as replacement of calcareous units during the same episode of peraluminous magnatism responsible for the gold vein mineralization. Whole rock and trace element data from pagmatites and aplites of the Fortuna and Tumco areas, together with data from the Gunnery Range batholith of southwestern Arizona, indicate that the magma series (after Keith, 1984) responsible for the gold metallogeny is peraluminous calcic, and is quite rich in sodium.

Most modern mines can profit from improvements in information handling. Recording systems in many cases were designed to satisfy certain necessary legal requirements, but not specifically to provide management information. As a consequence, the top managements of these properties work with cost data and production information that is dated, lacking in detail and clouded with supposition. It is the intent of this paper to describe an information system for a mine-plant complex in terms of the type of data, application areas and the existing equipment technology that may be applied to improve this situation. The economics of information processing and data handling will not be discussed in detail. This paper is based on the premise that information is something of value and that information processing like a manufacturing operation works for and is subject to management control. Information, the product, must be of quality, and the cost must be favorable in terms of its use.

THE direct injection of cement grout into water-bearing fissures as a means of checking or stopping the flow of water into shafts and tunnels has been experimented with for a decade or longer and seems to have been first attempted in Europe. The earliest application of which the writer has found a record was at a shaft sunk by the Mining Society of Lens; this is described by C. Dinoire in the Transactions of the Institution of Mining Engineers.1. It is only lately, however, that the process has been entirely successful. This success has been accomplished on the Catskill Aqueduct, now under construction by the city of New York. This aqueduct includes a number of deep pressure tunnels, reached by shafts for both waterway and construction purposes. In portions of these shafts and tunnels considerable underground water was met. The contract for the first of these deep pressure tunnels was let to the T. A. Gillespie Co.; this section is known as the Rondout Siphon. It leads under the Rondout valley at a depth of from 400 to 800 ft. and is about 5 miles long. The engineers expected that considerable water would be encountered, but fortunately this was not the case except at one shaft, known as No. 4, which penetrated the rock at a junction between limestone and conglomerate. Water-bearing fissures were encountered almost immediately. At a depth of about 200 ft. a flow of 1,500 gal. per minute was struck. The shaft then contained as many pumps as could be used, and it seemed impossible to sink it further. After vain efforts had been made to proceed, John P. Hogan, a division engineer of the Board of Water Supply, suggested that cementation of the fissures be tried. The process was attempted for the first time in this country. Since the shaft was partly full of water it was necessary to drill grout holes with a diamond drill. Platforms were placed on the timbers at the water level, the diamond drill was installed and six 90-ft. holes were drilled in the bottom of the shaft. Several car loads of cement were pumped through these holes into the fissures, the drill casings being used for grout pipes. Micron-sized gold disseminated in lower Cambrian siltstone has been found at the Sterling mine near Beatty, NV. A shoestring-shaped body has been developed by central and fringe drifts and is being mined via a modified retreat room and pillar system. The siliceous ore crushed to 5.08 cm (2 in ) is stacked to 4.6 m (15 ft) over a layered sand, gravel, and impervious PVC base. Gold is leached using a 0.1% cyanide solution and deposited on activated coconut shell carbon. Stripping of the carbon by hot solutions of 1% NaOH and 20% Ethanol yields overall recovery of about 75% of the fire assay head.

Waste rock piles (WRP) are made of heterogeneous, coarse grained waste rock, with inclined layers due to segregation along the slopes and haul traffic compacted layers, creating highly contrasted hydrogeological conditions. The internal structure of the pile has a major impact on water and oxygen movement and pore water pressure distribution. In the presence of reactive minerals, this influences the production of acid mine drainage (AMD) or contaminated neutral drainage (CND) with metal leaching from the WRP. Water flow and distribution may also affect slope stability, particularly following major infiltration events (rain/snow melts).The prediction and interpretation of water distribution in WRP is a challenging problem. Numerous numerical investigations of short and long term forecasts have been conducted, and many of these were found of limited reliability. The shortcomings of existing approaches are typically due to difficulties in representing preferential flow processes in macropores. Such phenomena are in fact often neglected in the assessment of water flow in WRP because these are unattainable with the classical porous media approach typically used in this field. This paper focuses on the use of modeling techniques originally designed for massive fractured rock media to simulate flow in WRP. Waste rock properties used in this study are retrieved from large scale laboratory permeability and water retention tests and from in situ infiltration tests. The effect of WRP configurations on water flow into potentially reactive zones is examined with the numerical 3D fully-integrated surface/subsurface, variably saturated flow model HydroGeoSphere. Material properties retrieved from the laboratory tests are represented by means of stochastic facies distribution generated within a probability framework. Modelled soil water contents and hydraulic head distributions, as well as fluxes within a simple waste rock pile, with compacted layers, are compared with results retrieved from simulations based on the classical equivalent porous medium approach. Results indicate significantly increased flow towards the looser waste rock zone by considering heterogeneous material distribution, causing weak or absent capillary barriers and preferential flow paths. Practical implications for the design of waste rock piles are also discussed.

A guide to the development and use of an APL computer program for the analysis of load-flow problems is presented. The program is designed to provide an interactive method of load-flow study to improve underground coal mine electrical system design and safety. The theoretical basis for load-flow analysis is discussed, along with per-unit calculations which facilitate computation. Specific input/output, execution and network modification procedures are presented for using the APL program. In addition, typical results are given for examples taken from power system analysis literature.

Influence of frothers (a-terpineol and n-octanol) concentration on kinetics of a three phase contact (TPC) formation by a bubble colliding with a hydrophobic surface (Teflon) of different roughness was studied using a high-speed camera (1040 frames per second). It was found that the Teflon surface roughness and the frother concentration strongly affected time of the TPC formation (tTPC) and time of drainage (tD) of the liquid film separating the colliding bubble from the solid surfaces. With increasing Teflon surface roughness, from ca 1 to 80 µm, the time of the TPC formation was shortened by over the order of magnitude, from ca 100 to a few milliseconds only. At low a-terpineol and n-octanol concentrations, thetTPC values were shorter than in distilled water due to lowering the bubble velocity in the frother presence and diminished bouncing of the colliding bubble. However, at high frothers concentrations the tTPC values were prolonged, despite that the bubble velocity was similar. The prolongation of the tTPC at high frother concentrations indicates that air (micro- and/or nano-bubbles) was present at the Teflon surfaces of different roughness. The mechanism of the tTPCprolongation at high frother dosage is described.

The exhaustion of oil and gas in the United States is proceeding at a rapid pace. This is especially true in fields where the light oils that furnish the most fuel for internal-combustion engines arc found, leading to a late estimate by Arnold that the petroleum resources are 36 per cent. exhausted.l The further remark by Dr. David T. Day at the New York meeting of the Institute, in February, 1916, that the operators of the country are now scarcely able to supply the ever-increasing demand for gasoline, leads the writer to believe that a determined effort will soon be made to secure deeper producing horizons in those regions that now furnish high-grade oil, and in which pump stations and pipe lines offer convenient means for the economical handling of new production. A study of Arnold's table shows further that the States that produce paraffin oil exclusively are 45 per cent. exhausted, this figure being much higher than the average of paraffin and asphalt States altogether. The most extensive of all the paraffin-oil-producing areas is the Appalachian Field, extending with the Appalachian Geo-Syncline from western New York southwestward through western Pennsylvania, western West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee, where oil of high gravity is always secured. Of these States, Pennsylvania and West Virginia rank highest in the quality of their product. In West Virginia, the oil sands dip to a lower level than in any other locality in the Appalachian Geo-Syneline, the Pittsburgh Coal of the Pennsylvanian being only 50 ft. above sea level along the Nineveh Syneline at Wileyville, Wetzel County.² The very significant fact that the sands of the Mississippian and Upper Devonian Measures furnished the richest oil pools of the State along this

South Australian coals are all low in rank and generally poor in quality, with difficult combustion characteristics. This circumstance makes the selection of a fuel source for future power generation difficult, requiring careful study and detailed analysis of the various alternatives. Combustion characteristics can have a significant effect on plant design and costs, and need early attention in any exploration and evaluation programme. The physical location of the deposits, often remote from established infrastructure and centres of population, is also a major factor in the ultimate cost of power at the poirl use.

THE property of Howey Gold Mines, Limited, is situated at Red Lake, Ontario, one hundred and seventy-five miles east of Winnipeg and eighty miles north of the Canadian National railway. The mine has been a continuous producer since April, 1930, and, at present writing, a total of 3,042,690 tons has been hoisted, giving a production of $6,422,858.55, for a grade of $2.32 per ton. From 1,064,477 tons mined during the past two years, however, the yield has been only $1,389,607.03, or $1.41 per ton (gold at $20.67). Present output is at the rate of about 1,470 tons. per day. THE ORE-BODY AND WALL-ROCK: The Howey ore-body is part of a quartz porphyry dyke, which has. intruded an area of greenstone. The dyke strikes north 65° east, and its dip varies from 85° to the south at the surface to practically vertical below the. 1,000-foot horizon. Both along the strike and on the dip, the width of the dyke varies from 25 to 200 feet, the widest portion occurring below the 1,000-foot level. To the east of the ore-body, the dyke increases in width and finally splits into tongues of porphyry enclosed in greenstone, diorite, and congloJ11erate. To the west, it passes into the adjoining property, its width at the boundary being 100 feet. The rock in the ore-body is hard to drill, but, because of numerous horizontal slip-planes, it breaks well when blasted. This characteristic makes it possible to break large breasts or benches with a relatively small number of holes. The ore broken in this manner is consequently quite coarse, a large part of it requiring secondary breaking.

(ESI) process, now being commercialized by MetWool, Inc., to recycle hazardous wastes using an extractive metallurgical process which is followed by vitrification of non-reducible metal oxides. In this process, volatile and reducible metals are reclaimed as their respective oxides and elements.
