A notable amount of fossil resin exists in many of the bituminous coal beds of Utah, The upper part of these show a marked concentration of resin, which occurs primarily in the fracture seams. In general, these seams are less than 1/8 in. thick, but it is not uncommon to find coal with areas as thick as 3/8 in. The resin is of the hard kauri variety, with coloration varying from deep blood red to lemon yellow and almost colorless. There is also an almost black variety, which is not readily soluble in the same solvents as the lighter colored resins. These resins are valuable for many industrial purposes. When refined, they are suitable for uses similar to those for which lac resins are usually employed. They are particularly desirable for preparing dielectric varnishes. They are also desirable in preparing printing inks, waterproofing agents, special synthetic rubbers and rubber cements, They are especially suitable as an admixture in synthetic rubbers and cements, as they supply the essential tackiness the synthetics lack. The following chemical trade characteristics' have been found by Inter-Chemical Co. research chemists in the refined resins: Specific gravity (melted)....... Completely soluble in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Insoluble in alcohols, ethyl acetate and other commonly used alcohols and esters. Compatible with natural and synthetic rubbers, chlorinated and cyclized rubbers, waxes, vegetable oils, mineral oils, rosin, ester gum, phenolic and modified phenolic resins and other natural and synthetic resins of like solvent solubility."* The recovery and refining of these fossil resins has been the subject of much research work and has intrigued many investigators. Broadly speaking, the problem involves separation of the resin from the coal into a very high-grade concentrate, and subsequent treatment of this concentrate to produce an acceptable refined resin for its various usages. The Rogan-Mallery tin property is in the foothills on the south slope of the Tehachapi Mountains, Kern County, Calif. It was first visited by the senior author in August 1942, and exploration by means of trenching and diamond drilling began in May 1944 and was concluded in August of the same year. Cassiterite, associated with iron-rich gossan, occurs in a limestone roof pendant at places near or at its contact with the underlying granitic rocks. The cassiterite grain sizes range from 20 mesh to 150 mesh. Surface and diamond-drill samples showed tin ranging from traces up to 122.6 pounds per ton. Exploration by the Bureau of Mines included 2,100 cubic yards of trenching and the drilling of 11 diamond drill holes totaling 1,000 feet. Dana Hogan, president of the Rogan Petroleum Co. of Los Angeles, Calif.) brought these projects to the attention of the Bureau of Mines in July 1942, and the following month a Bureau engineer made a preliminary examination in company with Hillard Mallery, of 408 Ruby Street, Redondo Beach, Calif., the man who discovered them.

"Noise from impact pile driving can harm fish, marine mammals and other sensitive wildlife over large areas. Marine pile driving is highly regulated, and regulators require sound levels to be below certain thresholds to avoid harassment and injury to sensitive marine life. In many locations, timing restrictions, use of noise attenuation technologies and extensive monitoring for impacts to wildlife are also required. As a result, permitting can be laborious and time consuming, and project implementation and scheduling can be complicated. Underwater noise levels are measured with an underwater microphone (hydrophone), which converts noise pressure to voltage and is calibrated to express the noise pressure in Pascals (Pa). The pressure is often expressed using a logarithmic scale, in decibels (dB). Several specific metrics can be used to describe underwater noise. Three common metrics are the instantaneous peak sound pressure level (dBpeak), the root mean square pressure level (dBRMS) and the sound exposure level (dBSEL) referred to as the peak, RMS and SEL levels, respectively.During impact pile driving, the peak pressure represents the instantaneous maximum pressure, either overpressure or underpressure, observed during each pile strike. The RMS level is the square root of the mean of the square of the pressure during the duration of the impulse; it is the average pressure level of the pile strike from beginning to end. The cumulative SEL (SELcum) is calculated by summing the cumulative pressure squared and integrating over time of duration of the pile strike. SEL is used as an indication of the cumulative energy of a pile driving event, which may consist of one or many pile strikes.Regulatory agencies use these metrics to help characterize the noise pressure levels that can affect sensitive species. Some of the most frequently encountered biological thresholds in the Northwestern United States that are used by regulators to describe potential impacts to sensitive species are summarized in the following table. Agencies have defined thresholds for different types of injury, either hearing or bodily harm, and for temporary injury or disturbance."

Within flotation technology the general trend is towards very large cells. Scale-up is usually done by postulating geometrical similarity, which implies keeping the aspect ratio constant when increasing cell volume. Consequently, the design of flotation circuits typically involves several cells of identical geometry within a bank. Using a few standard sizes in a flotation plant simplifies design, manufacturing and maintenance of the cells, but does not necessarily guarantee optimal performance and selectivity of the flotation process. Geometry parameters for a given cell volume that influence flotation cell performance include cell height, which causes changes in the hydrostatic pressure and suspension hydrodynamics, and also influences the travel distance of particle-bubble agglomerates as well as the homogeneity of the mixing. Also the thickness of the froth layer depends on the aspect ratio of the cell. The objective of this work is to gain a better understanding of material distribution and properties within a flotation cell and, based on this information, elucidate how alterations of the cell geometry can influence separation efficiency. For this purpose systematic measurements and analyses of the spatial distribution of the different phases within a 160 m3 flotation cell have been carried out with a particular focus on an industrial, low-grade copper ore beneficiation process. The concepts for sampling at different vertical and lateral positions of the flotation cell are introduced. The results from the experimental work give an understanding of internal material distribution within flotation cells. Based on the measured phase distribution and concentrations as well as particle properties at various positions within the cell, the implications for an optimized scaling and design of individual flotation cells within a flotation circuit are discussed.

Environmental improvement efforts are focusing with increasing intensity on pollutants resulting from combustion. The high cost of removing these pollutants at the power station is well documented. Physical coal cleaning has always been and should remain the most economic method of reducing sulfur oxide emission from coal combustion. It is critical in the selection of preparation plant circuitry to consider capital and operating costs, as well as the level of sulfur reduction. This paper describes the technical criteria which must be used for efficient process selection and summarizes the cleaning systems available or in development.

The oxidation of sphalerite particles of 60 to 100 mesh size was studied in a fluidized bed of low 02 concentration at 900¦C. Par- tial pressure of 02 in the fluidizing 02-N2 gas mixture was chosen between 0.0009 and 0.02 atm. In the region of p02 between 0.008 and 0.02 atm, the oxidation rate was lowered with the decrease of p02, and the unreacted-core model was applied. At lower pbelow 0.008 atm, the reaction rate was enhanced as compared with the calcu- lated values from the unreacted-core model. From microscopic examination, it was found that ZnS was evaporated at the particle surface and the dissociated Zn vapor was oxidized in the gas phase. Initial reaction rate and the distance between the surface of inner sphaler- ite core and the oxide shell were studied based on the model of enhanced oxidation.

"In September 2009, Newmont began the commissioning of a 3 stage crushing and milling circuit at its Boddington Gold Operation in Western Australia. The Boddington ore has been recognized as one of the hardest and most abrasive ores treated to date and this played a pivotal role in the selection of crushing and HPGR technology for this operation as opposed to the more conventional SABC circuit.This paper will examine the scale up from laboratory to pilot plant and full scale operation of the crushing circuit. There have been many challenges to overcome in the first 18 months of operation; however, the HPGRs have in general met design expectations and performance is expected to improve further with ongoing design changes"

The isothermal formation of martensite at subzero temperatures has been studied in an austenitic stainless steel. The amount of martensite formed isothermally in a given time was found to follow a C-curve behavior with decreasing temperature. Since isothermal rnartensitic transformation occurs at temperatures above the true M. temperature of the olloy, the observed M. temperature is dependent on the cooling rate. It is believed that a general martensite theory must include the basic concepts of the strain embryo theory, and also the important role of thermal fluctuations. UNTIL recently the isothermal component of the martensitic transformation had been considered as a trivial effect in theoretical considerations of this type of transformation. One of the postulates used in defining a martensitic transformation was that the reaction was temperature dependent but not time dependent. Cohen and his associates1'2 were the first to report the isothermal formation of mar-tensite. They obsel-ved the time dependency of the martensite reaction at room temperature in plain carbon steels and certain tool steels. They found that a small amount of additional transformation occurred after the specimen reached the quenching temperature and that the rate of this isothermal transformation decreased rapidly with time. These authors considered this phenomenon to be a "tailing-off" of the main athermal reaction. Kurdjumov and MaksimovaL 5 studied the isothermal formation of martensite at subatmospheric temperatures in steels containing 0.6 pct C-6 pct Mn, 1.6 pct C, and in an iron-base alloy containing 23 pct Ni and 3.4 pct Mn. In each case it was found that both the initial rate and the total amount of isothermal transformation exhibited sharp maxima with decreasing temperature. They stated that it was possible to completely suppress the martensitic transformation in the 0.6 pct C-6 pct Mn steel by drastic quenching in liquid nitrogen. They interpreted their results in terms of a thermally activated process. The maximum in the rate of nucleation vs. temperature curve was assumed to be a result of the temperature dependence of the rate of growth of the martensite plates. It has been demonstrated," however, that martensite plates can form with great rapidity even at temperatures approaching absolute zero. In addition," attempts to confirm the reported suppression of the martensitic transformation by rapid cooling of a 0.6 pct C-6 pct Mn steel have proved unsuccessful. On this basis, and on other theoretical grounds, the validity of some of Kurd-jumov's results and conclusions is open to serious question. Cohen, Machlin, and Paranjpe' have proposed a theory of martensite formation based on the nucleation of strain embryos and a growth mechanism involving cooperative atomic displacements. According to this theory thermal fluctuations can make a strain embryo supercritical and thereby produce martensite isothermally. Das Gupta and Lement' have investigated the isothermal formation of martensite in a 17 pct Cr-0.7 pct C steel at temperatures below the ambient. They found that partial suppression of the martensitic reaction occurred on quenching into liquid nitrogen. That part of the reaction which can be suppressed is taken to correspond to the isothermal rather than the athermal part of the rnartensitic transformation. The initial rate of isothermal transformation for this steel was found to go through a maximum with decreasing temperature. This is in conformity with the findings of Kurdjumov and Maksimova for the steels used in their investigation. Das Gupta and Lement conclude that isothermal martensite formation occurs by the nucleation of new plates and is always preceded by some athermal transformation. The following paper is intended to be suggestive only, and to open the way for discussion and further observation. Its preparation was requested only two days before the time limit set for the submission of the papers comprising this symposium. Thus no time existed for detailed studies, so it is largely a memorandum of such facts as have come incidentally to the notice of the writer in the study of coal in the field. The field study of sulfur in coal has received very little special attention or description from coal student's. The presence of sulfur concretions is noted in hundreds of descriptions, and certain benches of a coal bed may be described as "sulfury" or the presence and position of sulfur bands may be noted in coal sections in connection with sampling. It may be accepted that some sulfur is present in all coal. The amount varies greatly in different regions, in different beds, and in the same bed in different areas. The anthracite of Rhode Island comes the nearest of any coal known to the writer of being free from sulfur, several analyses of that coal showing less than 0.1 per cent. Subbitumi-nous coals in Colorado in a few places have close to 0.2 per cent. of sulfur on the dry-coal basis and in other states subbituminous coals approach this lower limit. Bituminous coals seldom run under 0.4 per cent. of sulfur on the dry basis, though in a few places dry bituminous coals in Colorado and Washington have between 0.3 and 0.4 per cent. The better known bituminous coals have almost everywhere over 0.4 per cent. The best of the Pocahontas and New River coals run close to 0.4 per cent., but there is very little commercial coal in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, or the other states, that runs under 0.5 per cent. on the dry basis. From these minimum figures, the amount will range up to 5 or 6 per cent. or higher if visible sulfur is not excluded. It must be remembered that the usual analysis of a coal bed is not intended to give the total proportion of sulfur in the bed but the amount in the coal after the removal of the more obvious and larger sulfur masses. Professor Parr has already pointed out that, chemically, sulfur occurs in several forms: as pyrite, organic sulfur, sulfates, and possibly as un-combined sulfur. Sulfur in the form of sulfates is commonly the obvious result of the weathering of pyrite and may be found in the coal within .

Gas occurs in coalbeds in an adsorbed and a free gas state. Adsorbed gas is stored in the micropore structure and its transport is governed by Fick's law. The free gas occurs in the fracture system and flows according to Darcy's law. These two modes of mass transport are interdependent. Production decline curves of coal-gas wells are of the constant percentage decline type and, thus, show no indications of flow characteristics peculiar to coal-gas reservoirs. The effectiveness of surface boreholes as a degasification scheme depends upon both good fracture permeability and a high fracture density. The final tables of this chapter, tables 25-50, extend and expand the statistical series on production that was started in the 1963 edition of the Area Reports: International Volume of the Minerals Yearbook and that was subsequently updated and expanded in the 1965 and 1967-90 editions. Continuing the practice started in 1989, a column has been included in each of these tables providing a 5-year average for 1987-91, inclusive. This should provide a clearer picture more rapidly of the role of each major producer over the 5-year period. The listing order of major producers, however, continued to be, as in past years, in descending order of rank in the year of review, 1991. This group of tables now includes each of the crude minerals that ranked from? 1st to 19th in 1983 terms of value of their output (as well as four others of lesser rank). These 23 crude mineral commodities accounted for 93 % of the estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1983. In addition, world output of five key downstream products-aluminum, steel, cement, nitrogen in ammonia, and refined oil-is included because of their significance as products.

Strip mine reclamation Fs the process of restoring the land affected by the mining process to its most productive use. This can be timber production, pasture, crop land, wildlife and/or recreational use. The mining companies must determine, through the advice of their technicians, what the most advantageous use of the land will be. If the Company does not own the surface, the owner or owners must be contacted to determine their desires as to how the land should be reclaimed. Many times, in making the plans to restore an area with vegetative cover, the watershed and the quality of the water in the area is overlooked. The water itself must be an integral part of the reclamation plan. Many lakes and/or pits can be created with proper planning. In areas in the Midwest, where lakes are a scarcity, these strip mine lakes can become storage reservoirs for large amounts of water, They can help control runoff and low flow augmentation. The strip mining operation will affect the watershed regardless of whether a reclamation plan in made or not. It is up to the reclamation technician to see that the plan benefits the watershed instead of affecting it adversely. This can be done during the operation by intercepting the water before Pt enters the active pit. Diversion ditches above the highwall will handle the runoff water from the watershed. Water that does gain entry into the pit should be removed as quickly as possible. If the rules and regulations adopted by the Ohio River Valley Sanitation Commission in Resolution 5-60 are followed, water encountered during the operation can be handled with little or no adverse effect to the receiving watershed.

The DOZ underground mine at PT Freeport Indonesia is a copper and gold mine in Indonesia with current ore production of 42 000 tpd. Because of the mine expansion into the West DOZ more ventilation raises are needed to create a safe and healthy work place. All ventilation raises that connect the extraction levels to the underlying gallery exhaust drifts at DOZ are now developed using drop raise techniques. This paper describes the improvements undertaken to increase blasting efficiency, to decrease cost and reduce safety risks. This was achieved by using deck loading and presplitting, changing of stemming materials and prevention of excessive raise collar cratering (blow up).

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) IT is nearly three years since the metallurgy of the Homestake ore was discussed with considerable thoroughness, in a paper' read before the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy. Certain changes have been made in this period which are perhaps of sufficient interest to justify a brief description, and it is chiefly with such details and miscellanies that this paper will deal. In the circumstances, a certain amount of repetition is inevitable, but matter treated of in the former paper will be referred to here only when it is necessary for the sake of coherency. For full descriptions of equipment and technique, the former paper should be consulted. The mineralized slates and schists which constitute the ore vary considerably in composition, but the unoxidized ore, perhaps constituting the major part of the reserves, contains either chlorite or hornblende (cummingtonite), with quartz, carbonates of lime, magnesia and iron, and arsenopyrite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. Ferrous minerals predominate, and this fact has been an important factor in determining the metallurgical treatment. With one or two exceptions the minerals noted are of relatively high specific gravity, and the ore as a whole is exceptionally heavy, many determinations giving an average specific gravity of 3.00. This high specific gravity presents one decided advantage, when the' cost of treatment is compared with operations elsewhere, in that the ton, almost universally the basic unit, represents a volume probably less by 10 per cent. than that of many gold ores. On the other hand, this high gravity renders more difficult the discharge of pulp from mortars, its distribution on amalgam tables, and its transportation in launders.

The results of this study indicate that sudden increases in aging temperature lead to reversion phenmena in carbon in the a, iron system. These phenomena are thought to be associated with the dissolution of carbide precipitates. Reversion is studied with respect to three variables: 1) Specimen grain size, 2) the initial amount of carbon in solution, and 3) difference between initial and final aging temperature. It is found that of these variables the initial carbon concentration has the greatest effect on reversion. THE solid solution of carbon in n iron has been the subject of numerous investigations throughout the past few years. This paper describes the design, the first three years of operation and optimization of a large, single stage SAG mill at Minera Yanacocha’s Gold Mill facility located in northern Peru. The Gold Mill was commissioned in March 2008 with a 32’ x 32’ EGL, 16.5MW single stage SAG mill, to process 5 million tonnes per annum high grade oxide Au/Ag ore. Operational control, feed size distribution, grinding media, mill liner, grate and pulp lifter optimisation have allowed the mill to operate 15-30% above design throughput rates, but with a product P80 coarser than design. As part of the optimization, full grinding circuit surveys were conducted. Historical operating data and survey data were analyzed and used to evaluate possible circuit changes and determine alternative operating strategies. A number of changes were implemented which allowed the SAG mill to operate similarly to a large ball mill and achieve finer mill product that was closer to design. This paper summarizes life to date data analysis and improvements made by Minera Yanacocha as well as the grinding circuit optimisation study conducted by Metso Process Technology and Innovation.

A three-way research program, facilitated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines Generic Institute funding, conducted by Hecla Mining Co., Spokane Research Center of the Bureau and the University of Idaho, shows that a cooperative effort to solve difficult mining problems should be considered. A five-year plan to change an overhead cut-and-fill mining system to a longwall undercut-and-fill involves more than twenty people from three organizations. The investigations will eventually include, ground stress, stress analysis, fill selection placement and compaction, ground and fill support, underhand mining and materials handling, access, ventilation, equipment selection and synthesis and operations and cost simulation.

The number of installations of propeller mine fans completed during the years of 1936 and 1937 is evidence of the increasing popularity of the propeller fan with the American mining industry. During the period from 1931 to 1936, there were several different low-pressure, low-efficiency propeller fans available, which filled a definite need in replacing inefficient centrifugal fans operated at comparatively low pressure by means of purchased power. Since 1936, however, the trend toward the propeller fan has greatly increased, as propeller fans are now available practically without pressure limitations and capable of efficiencies high enough to warrant replacement of efficient centrifugal fans in many instances. Few manufacturers of propeller mine fans base their fan-operating characteristics upon similar test methods, primarily because of inadequate facilities for testing in the factory and the need of a test code incorporating a calibrated duct or nozzle that makes possible the testing of large propeller fans quickly, accurately and without prohibitive expense and space requirements. As a result, fan manufacturers have resorted to various methods for testing large propeller fans in the factory, and different yardsticks have produced uncomparable and often inaccurate performance data. It is the purpose of this paper to describe and discuss in detail the test procedure of the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co., which has been proved both accurate and practical. Fig. 1 shows a plan, a side elevation and two end elevations of the test duct with a propeller fan of the exhaust type in place. Testing propeller fans exhausting permits greater accuracy than testing these fans blowing, because in the former uniform flow conditions are more easily established at Pitot tube stations where fan pressure and air-volume measurements are desired. Any residual rotation remaining in the air discharged from a propeller fan blowing into a test duct must be removed before an attempt is made to obtain accurate pressure and volume readings. Although various devices for straightening the air may be placed between the blowing fan and the volume-measuring station without resulting complications, uniform flow so obtained at the pressure-measuring station necessitates corrective calculations to compensate for duct resistance
