Salt, or halite, has had a long and most varied history. While we know the Chinese were producing salt as early as 3000 B.C., the first written reference to salt appears in the book of Job recorded about 2250 B.C., which reads: "Can nothing which is unsavory be eaten without salt?" We do not know when man first used or realized that he needed salt. Perhaps one of our early Eolithic ancestors noted a piece of salt shining along the shore of a salt lake or a bay. He may have been attracted by its shining luster and tasted it. He found that it had a tart, zesty, distinctive flavor and perhaps chewing a large piece, became ill. However, by experimentation he soon learned that taken in the proper proportions salt was a very pleasant additive to his food. He may have noticed, too, that it increased his feeling of well-being. Thus, when the curtain of recorded history rises, we find man using salt for his health's sake, seasoning his food with it, feeding it to his animals, and using it in many superstitious and religious ceremonies. These uses, however, are a far cry from the uses for salt today. The first attempts of white man to make salt in continental United States were reported in the year 1614, while the first commercial production was in 1790. Practically all of this salt was for human consumption, preserving food, and curing hides. Prior to the coming of the "white man" Indians are known to have made salt from such salt springs as those that existed at Avery Island, La., Charleston, W.Va., Saltville, Va., and Onondaga, N.Y. In 1862 the first rock salt was mined in the U.S. from the Avery Island salt dome. Almost immediately thereafter, rock salt was mined at Saltville, Va., and then at Retsof, N.Y., in 1885. Of the more than 40 million tons produced annually in the United States, about 68% or 27 million tons are consumed by the chemical industry in the production of chlorine, caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, sodium metal, and some 30 other basic chemicals. These basic chemicals, in turn, are used in the preparation of approximately 14,000 chemicals which range from soap and detergents, to such chlorinated hydrocarbons as DDT, BHC, carbon tetrachloride, etc.

The treatment of iron-hydroxide-containing water from ground water and surface water is achieved by a combination of the process steps of flocculation and subsequent mechanical dewatering. The aim is to create solid pellet structures by extending the structure forming flocculation process with a build-up pelletizing process which can be transferred directly into a drying unit. A Taylor-Couette-reactor (diameter of the inner cylinder – 40 mm, gap width – 5 mm) was used for these experimental studies. To produce the necessary flow profile the inner cylinder was rotated at a speed of 230 rpm. The iron hydroxide-containing suspension (dry matter content: 2 mass %) was added simultaneously with the addition of a cationic high-molecular flocculant in various flocculant dosages and residence times of 5 to 15 min. The pellets were examined for parameters such as geometric dimensions, dry substance content and dewatering behaviour. As the results show, there is a direct relationship between the residence time and the geometric dimensions of the pellets. After a residence time of 5 min, round pellets with an average diameter of 6 mm were formed. With an increase in the residence time up to 15 min, a compaction of the pellets could be observed, which resulted in an increase in the dry substance content of 8.0 to 11.2 mass % on average. After completion of the pelletizing process, the pellets were mechanically dewatered by filtration. By applying this innovative wet pelletizing of iron-hydroxide containing suspensions in a Taylor-Couette-reactor, it is possible to carry out the process of flocculation combined with the pellet formation with simultaneous pellet compaction in a single process step. The resulting pellet structures are distinguished from conventional floc structures by an improved water discharge capacity. After classification the pellets can be marked directly as easy-to-handle bulk material, suitable as feedstock in percolation columns for the purification of contaminated fluid streams

En ese sentido, se muestra la implementación de las redes de estaciones meteorológicas y limingráficas, los sistemas de SCADA para el control de la distribución de agua, así como la integración de la información dentro de un sistema de información geográfica y como parte de las herramientas se describe la integración de modelos matemáticos al sistema de gestión. Por ello, los actuales cuestionamientos a la minería relacionados con el manejo del agua, requieren que las empresas del sector minero realicen una adecuada gestión de los recursos hídricos mediante la implementación de tecnologías de punta.

It is now recognized that several important types of reactions in metallic systems proceed by the formation of nuclei and the growth of these nuclei. The process of freezing is a simple example of this, as Tammann pointed out years ago.1 Tammann held that the rate of freezing is determined by a rate of nucleation, expressed as the number of nuclei formed per unit volume of unfrozen liquid per second, and a rate of growth of these nuclei, expressed as the linear rate of radial growth in units of length per second. For isothermal freezing the conception is simple; for ordinary freezing, extending over a range of temperature, it is not as simple, for the values of the two constants must change with change in temperature. There is ample evidence that the postulated mechanism is correct even though a quantitative derivation of the rate of isothermal or of ordinary freezing in terms of the two constants has been lacking. In recent years other reactions have been found to proceed in a similar fashion. It has been well established, particularly by Bain12-8 that the formation of pearlite from the eutectoid decomposition of the solid solution austenite proceeds in such a way, and Polanyi and Schmid, Tammann and Crone, Karnop and Sachs, and others9-11 have shown that the process of recrystallization proceeds in a similar way. Isothermal reaction rates have been determined for eutectoid decomposition by a number of investigators. Bain's2-8 work on the formation of pearlite from austenite is especially valuable in this respect—the type of isothermal reaction curve obtained, as illustrated in Fig. 13, showed an initial slow rate, accelerating to an intermediate maximum rate which then decelerated to the completion of the reaction; similar curves have been obtained by Wever and his collaborators.12 Other eutectoid decompositions show similar behavior: for example, the decomposition of the beta eutectoid in the copper-aluminum system, studied by Smith

In the 2018 financial year SKM achieved an annual ore production of 4.5 Mt (4.42 million LT) and mined metal production of 247 kt (243,099 LT).

DeLamar, the largest silver mine in the United States outside the Coeur d’Alene District in Idaho, came into production in April 1977. It is a joint venture of Earth Resources Company and Canadian Superior Oil Co., with Earth Resources being the operator. The property is a consolidation of several old operations dating back to the 1800s; the better known of these are the DeLamar and Sommer-camp mines. DeLamar is situated in southwestern Idaho near the Oregon border in the Owyhee Mountains, 88 km (55 miles) southwest of Boise, Idaho. Heavy snowfalls and very low temperatures are common in the wintertime. Planned production was 77,500 kg (2.5, million oz) of silver and 5 13 kg (16,500 oz) of gold per year. Expected life at a milling rate of 1,540 mtpd (1,700 stpd) was 20 years, with an ore grade of 144 g Ag and 1.58 g Au per mt (4.2 oz Ag and 0.046 oz Au per st). Present production is at the rate of 1,900 mtpd (2,100 .stpd). The total cost to bring the mine into production was reported to be approximately $22 million, and the mill was reported to have cost about $10,000 per daily ton of design capacity. At DeLamar, naurnanite (Ag2Se) is the principal silver .mineral occurring with acanthite (Ag2S) disseminated through quartz veins and a silicified rhyolitic ash-flow tuff of Miocene age. The mineralization is relatively iron and manganese free and is readily amenable to cyanidation giving recoveries of 85% silver and 92% gold, which occurs free. When the plant was started, considerable difficulties were encountered in handling the wet sticky ore because of the high clay content. Following primary crushing, the ore is stockpiled. Due to the sticky nature of the ore, the vibrating feeders initially installed under the stockpile were replaced by a reclaim hopper and an apron feeder which was fed 24 hours a day by a front-end loader. The minus 200 mm (8 in.) ore is fed to a 5.5 m by 2.75 m (18 ft by 9 ft) autogenous mill followed by a 2.75 m by 4.57 m (9 ft by 15 ft) ball mill and cyclones. The mills are equipped with 750 kw and 520 kw (1,000 hp and 700 hp) motors. Both mills discharge to the same cyclone feed sump and a portion of the cyclone underflow is returned to the autogenous mill. Biooxidation, a biohydrometallurgical process, utilizes a mixed microbial consortium to mediate the dissolution of refractory gold-bearing ores to enhance gold recovery during cyanidation. Recognition of water as a critical resource has prompted improved water management strategies within mining and minerals processing. Bioremediated wastewater from the cyanidation tailings provides a potential water source to supplement the water required for the biooxidation circuit, reducing freshwater extraction. Gold biomining operations have typically been reluctant to recycle this wastewater due to the potential inhibitory effects of cyanide and thiocyanate (SCN-) on the microbial population. Historical process upsets suggest that the microorganisms are sensitive to SCN- concentrations as low as 1 mg/L. However, effective bioremediation processes resulting in effluents with low or negligible SCN- concentrations may allow gold biomining plants the opportunity to recycle available water. Microbial activity as well as alteration in community structure were monitored as a function of increasing SCN- concentration over the range of 0 mg/L to 5 mg/L to investigate the response of the biooxidation community to potential SCN- spikes resulting from upsets in the remediation process. Appropriate microbial growth and ferrous iron oxidation activity with a nominal shift in community structure were observed at SCN- concentrations up to 1 mg/L. Thiocyanate concentrations above 1 mg/L resulted in the complete inhibition of ferrous iron oxidation activity. This was attributed to Leptospirillum ferriphilum’s sensitivity to SCN-. Exposure to a SCN- concentration of 5 mg/L resulted in a lower cell concentration and a significant increase in growth lag time, and the absence of L. ferriphilum from the microbial population. At. caldus and Ap. cupricumulans were still present at 5 mg/L SCN-, although Ap. cupricumulans was unable to oxidise ferrous iron at this SCN- concentration. It was concluded that recycling bioremediated cyanidation tailings wastewater within the biooxidation circuit is feasible; however, to retain process performance, SCN- concentrations should not exceed 1 mg/L. In situ solution mining of uranium has environ- mental advantages over conventional mining. The leaching of uranium, however, alters the groundwater quality in the aquifer where the mining occurs. Currently, regulations require that the groundwater be restored to approximately its original condition. This paper, a summary of a study funded by the Bureau of Mines, reviews the state of the art in restoring groundwater quality after in situ uranium leaching. Current restoration practices discussed include disposal of liquid wastes in deep disposal wells and evaporation ponds, producing from all wells during restoration, and recirculating water purified in surface plants. Methods for predicting the effectiveness and cost of current techniques are presented. Possible alternative techniques are also described. Two restoration operations are discussed.

Moon, chief, Mining Branch, reports upon ore such technique.The Wright borehole-surveying instrument developed at the Homestake mine, Lead, S. Dak., has been described in several publications. 3/ For the benefit of those to whom the publications are not available, the instrument is described here. However, this article will be concerned mainly with the technique developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for using the instrument.In the use of the Wright borehole-surveying instrument, it was found advantageous to develop a standard practice of operation covering type of film, preparation and care of film, loading film in instrument, placing instrument in container, exposure time, unloading film from instrument, development of film, and determination of dip and strike from film impressions."

"Duluth & Iron Range Railroad. The Duluth & Iron Range Railroad was built from Two Harbors to the Vermilion range at Tower, a distance of 67.6 miles, in 1884, and extended to Ely, twenty-one miles east of Tower, in 1888. It was built into Duluth in 1886, and branches were extended from its main line to the Mesabi mines in 1892 and 1893. The original grades on this road are very steep, going north, and in the thirteen miles from Two Harbors to Highland there is a rise of 1,150 feet. A new line between these points has been built with an increase of three miles in distance and with maximum grades of 1 per cent. Duluth, Missabe & Northern Railway. The Duluth, Mis¬sabe & Northern Railway was constructed from Stony Brook to Mountain Iron, a distance of 48.62 miles, in 1892. The Biwabik branch from Iron Junction to Biwabik, a distance of 15.54 miles, was constructed in 1892. The Superior branch from Wolf to Hibbing, a distance of 16.06 miles, was co11structed in 1893. The Alborn branch from Coleraine Junction to Coleraine, a distance of 53 miles, was constructed in 1906. The total main line mileage is 242 miles, of which 82 miles from Duluth to Hibbing is double tracked"

For the purpose of obtaining some first-hand data in regard to the shooting down of coal in bituminous mines, it was the writer's good fortune to be employed as a shot-firer for almost one year. In all, 6020 shots were fired by him during this period. All of the work was done in what is known as the South Main section of the No. 2 Mine of the Ellsworth Collieries Co., Ellsworth, Pa., a subsidiary of the Lackawanna Steel Go. Position of Shot-firing in the Cycle of Operations The established practice of the Ellsworth Collieries Co. calls first for the undercutting of the coal by electric chain machines across the face of the entry or room. This is followed by replacing any posts removed by the machine-runners, or the setting of new posts or timber, as may be required. After this has been done the machine cuttings are loaded into cars. Then the coal is spragged, and a shot hole drilled to the depth of the undercut. Next in order, the shot-firer loads the hole and fires the charge. The working place is then cleaned up, timbered if necessary, the sides and face squared up, and loose material taken down. The face is again ready to be undercut. Materials Used Permissible explosives were used exclusively in blasting coal. These were Carbonite No. 2, a nitroglyccrine explosive; and three different makes of ammonium nitrate explosives, Tunnelite, Red H, and Mine-ite 5-D. The last-named was used during the greater part of the period. It is interesting to note that even at the beginning of this work, the gases resulting from the explosions of the charges caused no especial distress on. the shot-firer's part and this continued to be the case except on the occasions when a change was made from one class of explosive to another.

This paper, describing the mining method at the Black Butte quicksilver mine, is one of a series of papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various districts of the United States. It is presented to show the mining practice and costs in the successful treatment of low-grade quicksilver deposits. The operation discussed is an excellent example of w1-pat can be done in working a limited tonnage of low-grade ore under sound management. The Black Butte mine is situated at Black Butte, Lane County, in the southern part of the State of Oregon, 17-1/2 miles from Cottage Grove -- a station on the Siskiyou branch of the Southern Pacific Co. The Black Butte mining district lies in the foothills of the Calapooia Mountain Range, which connects with the Cascade Range on the east and with the Coast Range on the west. The elevation at '.lie reduction plant is 1,000 feet above sea level. The apex of Black Butte Mountain, or which the mine is situated, has an elevation of 2,700 feet. The district possesses exceptional natural facilities infrequently met with elsewhere for the mining and reduction of cinnabar ores. "With the acceptance of an application and a signed contract for prospecting deep-sea sulfides (2012) between the Russian Federation and the ISA, at present it is particularly important to assess the quality of oceanic sulfide minerals and to reliably estimate their resources.Some procedures of geochemical classification (chemical analyses, mineral composition of SMS) and calculations (density of ore, density of the mineral part of the ore, porosity and moisture contents) were used for estimation of mineral resources potential.The key characteristics for estimating the predicted resources of hydrothermal ore fields are the metal contents and the density of wet and dry sulfide ores. However, in the future it is impossible to provide an estimate of the predicted resources without taking into account the following important factors:- the quantitative ratio of main sulfide minerals;- proportion of non-metallic components (opal, quartz, talc);- the replacement of primary minerals by copper sulfides;- texture-structural features of sulfide ores.The offered mineral classification of the SMS is based on the prevalence of minerals in the ores and partly on their composition. The main ore-forming minerals of SMS are pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Sulfide mineralization is accompanied by the presence of nonmetallic minerals, where quartz and opal prevail, and where we also meet aragonite, talcochlorite and anhydrite."

The lesser developed countries (LDC's) may be classified into two categories: 1) oil producers, and 2) non-oil producers. The non-oil producing LDC's, as a class, are at present in very difficult financial straits. (1) Since the quadrupling of world market crude oil prices in 1972, an ever greater share of the LDC's export earnings have gone to pay for oil imports, in-stead of national reinvestment. The LDC's inter-national debts--much of it to pay for oil--have soared to record levels, with consequent limits for future credits. (1) Again, this inhibits future national investments, and there does not seem to be an end to the future increase of Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) prices. Indeed, some of the economic difficulties in some metal markets--particularly the imbalance of production vs. markets for copper, can be traced indirectly to the OPEC cartels' heavy-handed impact on copper producing LDC's which must produce copper at any price to meet their oil bills. (2) Among the major oil importing LDC's are the Philippines and South Korea. 50th nations have substantial cement industries. The South Korean industry is geared for major export markets in the Far East. Both nations have ambitious plans for economic growth in order to accommodate burgeoning populations with ever increasing expectations for high standards of living. These plans had some success, more or less, until the high OPEC oil cartel charges had to be borne. Now, in common with all oil-deficit areas, the Philippines and South Korea are seeking lower cost sources of energy. Both countries have coal deposits. In the case of the Philippines, the reserves are in scattered, relatively small deposits. Most of the coal deposits are faulted, folded and, in general present formidable production problems for limited reserves. Nonetheless production has been on the order of about 70,000 to 150,000 tons per year in the last 30 years. Prior productions (1920-1941) varied between 9,000 Co 150,000 tons per year. (13)

Effect of four polyols, namely ethylene glycol (EGL), glycerol (GCL), propanediol (PDL), butanediol (BDL) and three organic acids, namely oxalic acid (OA), malonic acid (MA) and succinic acid (SA) on the current efficiency (CE) and the cell voltage during zinc electrowinning was studied. Galvanostatic polarization was conducted in a supporting electrolyte (SE) containing 180 g dm-³ H2SO4, 60 g dm-³ Zn2+ and 8 g dm-³ Mn2+ at 38°C with magnetic stirring. The imposed current density was 50 mA cm-². The anodes were made of a Pb-Ag alloy and the cathodes were made of an aluminum alloy. The results showed that all the polyols tested in this study decreased the current efficiency and the cell voltage, but the decrease of the cell voltage was not important. Oxalic and succinic acids decreased the current efficiency to a less extent than the polyols, but did not decrease the cell voltage much. The only compound that increased the current efficiency was malonic acid, and its capacity of decreasing the cell voltage was the highest within the seven tested organic compounds.

THE quantitative study of grain shape in three dimensions has been a difficult one from the practical standpoint. Experiments on grain shape have usually been based on indirect observations of two-dimensional metallographic samples or on grains separated by intergranular corrosion or fracture. The latter method was used in particular by Deschl in 1919 in observing the shapes of ß-brass grains which had been separated with mercury. The similarity in detail of shape and packing that exists between bubbles in a soap froth and metal grains was noted by Desch who remarks that: "Surface tension has an. important share in determining the form of the crystal grains in a solidifying metal and such grains have a tendency to assume the shape of foam cells." More recently the relation between grain shape and grain growth has been studied by Harker and Parker.' The importance of surface tension forces in determining microstructure has been discussed by Smith," and an analysis of the topologi-cal rules that apply to such structures has been made by the same author.' Biologists have made valuable contributions to the general problem of shape and form in an assembly of space-filling cells subject to surface tension forces. Particular mention must be made of the extensive researches of Lewis5,8 on botanical and anatomical tissues, and Matzke and Nestler,7,8 who have made painstaking studies of bubble shapes in different kinds of foam. The present paper introduces a new method of studying individual grains in particular alloys—a method which may well find use in other metallurgical researches, and which seems also to be applicable in biological problems. Metal Grains in Three Dimensions The individual grains in a piece of metal or the bubbles in a soap froth must satisfy two conditions —they must be in juxtaposition so as to fill space and their interfaces must conform to the laws of surface tension. If a further restriction is imposed, namely, that only one type of polyhedron be used, then the sole possibility is an assembly of "minimal" tetrakaidecahedra," each polyhedron having eight doubly-curved hexagonal faces and six plane quadrilateral faces, the angles between adjacent faces being 120". Such cells could be stacked on a body-centered cubic lattice and would be quite stable. For many years it was believed that soap bubbles actually possessed the shape of this ideal body, and the hypothesis was the starting point for several investigations on the shapes of soap bubbles, biological cells, and metal grains. These investigations have shown, what might have been obvious in the beginning, that if the condition of symmetry is relaxed the tetrakaidecahedron is almost never found. If we retain only the rule that all contacts should be in local surface tension equilibrium and that the assembly should fill space, metal grains may then take a nearly infinite variety of shapes and no single one may be regarded as an archetype. These two conditions, which are fully discussed in one of the previously mentioned papers,' lead us to think of a typical grain in an annealed metal as having the following characteristics: 1—A grain may have any number of faces, but usually between nine and eighteen. The faces (each of which is, of course, shared by two grains in the assembly) may have any number of edges, but usually between four and six. Deep-sea mining of polymetallic nodules are expected to produce serious impact on benthic ecosystem due to removal of nodules, sediments and associated fauna by means of collector, and subsequently, by the resettlement of sediment plume which may affect seabed biota outside mining tracks through blanketing, smothering and feeding interruption. The scale and magnitude of the exact impact of commercial operations is not known at present, but its assessment strongly required acquisition of the adequate environmental baseline information. During the past two decades, IOM carried out a total of 20 research cruises in the eastern part of Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) with purpose to obtain essential data and information on polymetallic nodules and to prepare for future development their deposits. Whilst evaluating the nodule coverage at particular station from both seafloor photographs and box-core recoveries it was ascertain that the ground-truth data plotted against the photo data indicated substantial differences between two methods. Understanding of this phenomenon has not only the methodology meaning related to the efficiency of the using photoprofiling techniques during exploration of nodules, but also it could be of environmental importance because the similarity between natural sediment blanketing occurrence in studied area and expected re-deposition and blanketing of sediments which will be disturbed during mining operations.

Since it has been demonstrated that silica caused phagocytic cells to activate lipoxygenase metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids we thought selective inhibition of this metabolic pathway might be helpful in treatment of silicosis. It is known that lipoxygenase metabolism plays a role in the pathogenesis of a variety of inflammatory and hypersensitivity conditions. Further, it is believed that the alveolar phagocytic cells which engulf silica begin the inflammatory cycle which produces the metabolic products, cytokines and growth factors which causes fibrosis in the lung. There have been indications that drugs which inhibit lipoxygenase can inhibit fibrosis from other causes. Previously, we developed a method which detects the activity of lipoxygenase metabolism by measuring free radical oxidation via light production or chemiluminescence (CL). We decided to apply this method to phagocytic cells that would be found in the lung in the presence of silica with and without newly developed inhibitors of the lipoxygenase reaction. We used drugs which inhibit lipoxygenase directly including AA861 (TAKEDA), A63162 (Abbott), and an inhibitor that scavenges free radicals produced from the lipoxygenase reaction, nordihydroguairetic acid. In addition we used an indirect inhibitor, tetrandrine. We found drug inhibition of silica activated CL from alveolar macrophages, neutrophils and human leukemia (HL-60) cells differentiated with DMSO. Nordihydroguairetic acid 2x10-5M produced almost complete inhibition in all three cell types. In human leukemia cells (HL-60) A63162 and tetrandrine were equally inhibitory at 42% while in human neutrophils A63162 and tetrandrine were less active 22 and 10% respectively. In macrophages A63162 and AA861 were less than 50% inhibitory to cellular CL at 2xl0-5M. Direct assay of tetrandrine (2x10-5M) with sodium arachidonate and soybean lipoxygenase reveals no inhibition. All antilipoxygenase drugs regardless of mechanism were inhibitory to cellular chemiluminescence from all three types of phagocytic cells. These drugs alone or in mixtures could prove useful in treatment of silicosis.

The usual concurrence in time and space of intrusive igneous activity, favorable structural disturbance and mineralization, which is so manifest in the mineralized district necessarily indicates a close interrelationship between these events. Evaluation of available evidence leads to the recognition that an appreciable time interval exists between the emplacement of the igneous intrusive and the formation of associated ore deposits. During this interval known portions of the intrusive are completely solidified, highly differentiated magma facies are injected as dikes, and important faulting occurs, which may fracture and shatter the solidified intrusive body. The highly differentiated dike types could only have originated in some deep portion of an underlying plutonic body that had reached an advanced stage of magmatic differentiation. Appearing after these dikes, the mineralizing solutions may likewise be presumed to have originated at great depth. Certainly no source for these solutions can be found in near-by portions of the intrusive igneous body. The association of igneous intrusives and clustering ore deposits must be recognized as resulting from structural control. The emplacemerit and the subsequent solidification and cooling of the intrusive set in operation forces that are responsible for the favorable structural disturbances that control the mineralized district. The emplacement of the body of fluid magma weakens the crustal rocks to the extent that failure due to strains originally present in the rock body may occur. Faulting of any type and of any magnitude may be the result. Subsequently, owing to the change of state from fluid magma to crystalline granitic rock, volume decreases approximating 10 Per cent may Occur, with resultant shrinkage and collapse within the rock body. Following solidification, thermal contraction, induced by cooling of the rock body, causes a further volume reduction of 6 per cent. This thermal contraction, extending over a lengthy period of time, results in a succession of minor fault movements. These small fault movements, occurring progressively throughout the period of mineralization, are responsible for maintaining the permeability of the rock body, without which access of the mineralizing solutions and the formation of the ore deposits of the mineralized district would be impossible. Introduction A proper understanding of the causes that have localized our mineralized districts should be of considerable value to geologist and engineer alike. under current conditions the known ore reserves of productive mining camps are being rapidly depleted. Although ore of the future will be derived in part from deposits now known and from Ore bodies that are still to be discovered within the limits of productive mining districts, in part at least it must come from mineralized districts whose existence or importance yet remain to be recognized. The mining geologist is thus faced with two problems of paramount importance: (I) the location of new ore bodies within known mineralized areas and (2) the location of new mineralized districts within whose confines, previously unknown, valuable Ore deposits may occur.
