The method of feeding blast-furnaces to be described below is simply the application of well-known principles, and an attempt to carry that application to its logical conclusion. It does not involve radical changes in equipment, nor does it require unusual skill on the part of the furnaceman. In fact, much of its value lies in its very simplicity. Before giving details of the method it will be well to consider briefly the conditions under which it was used at the Nickelton plant of the British America Nickel Corporation, in the Sudbury district, before that plant closed down. The Sudbury nickel ore consists chiefly of pentlandite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite in a gangue of norite or greenstone. The proportions of sulphide and gangue vary widely in different mines, the former constituting about 45 per cent of the total in the British America sorted ore. The gangue is fairly uniform in analysis, carrying about 55 per cent Si02, 18 per cent A120 3, 13 per cent FeO and smaller quantities of CaO, MgO, Na20 and K20. The ore has been frequently described as refractory, a word which seems suitable when one considers the many unsuccessful attempts to smelt it pyritically, as well as the high percentage of coke normally used at all the plants in the district.

EXTRACTION techniques are of particular importance in determining size, shape an: crystal structure of particles smaller than l000Å in steels and other alloys. However, artifacts that can arise during the preparation of extraction replicas may lead to erroneous conclusions. The purpose of this note is to illustrate some of these artifacts and the misinformation that can result from their presence. An alloy of iron with 0.8 pct Cu was investigated in the following conditions: 1) Solution treated 3 days at 925°C in dry hydrogen and quenched in water. Aged in steps to precipitate copper, as follows: heated to 700°C, held 1 day; then furnace cooled to 50O°C, held 3 days; then furnace cooled to room temperature. 2) Solution treated 3 days at 925OC in dry hydrogen and furnace cooled to room temperature. 3) Solution treated 3 days at 925OC or 17 hr at 1100°C in dry hydrogen to dissolve all copper, then quenched in water. In this work, strontium doped lanthanum ferrite (LSF) and their composite cathodes were fabricated by screen printing on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes. Their electrochemical properties were evaluated by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and steady-state polarization methods. All the cathodes were screened by comparing their total polarization resistances before and after activation processes at different temperatures. The improved LSF composite cathodes were also screen-printed on YSZ/NiO half cells to fabricate solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which have reached the output power densities of 170 mW/cm2 at 650 °C, 230 mW/cm2 at 700 °C, 304 mW/cm2 at 750 °C and 388 mW/cm2 at 800 °C.

Tertiary laterite is extensively developed in the Darling Range area, but there is doubt that. the high relief areas along the Darling Scarp have been peneplaned. Three distinct laterite types are distinguished which are termed transported, introduced and residual laterites to avoid ambiguity. Transported laterites are recemented (primarily) lateritic materials and introduced laterites are chemical deposits of bog iron type. Residual laterites are formed in situ from the host material which can be either decomposed bedrock or detrital' clay, and the two varieties formed from these sources are termed residual A and residual B laterites. The genetic requirements for residual laterite formation are (1) host material, (2) porosity and permeability, (3) rainfall, (4) temperature, (5) relief and drainage, (6) vege- tation and (7) time. Previous theories on the origin of laterite appear to be inadequate and incompatible with field observations. Field investigations and drilling in the Darling Range area disclosed lenticular section and thickest laterite development on slopes and thin or oc- casionally no laterite development on crests. Lateritisation is considered a surface feature and the end product of the chemical weathering cycle. Annual metal consumption per capita has increased several orders of magnitude worldwide since the turn of the 19th century, yet grades of terrestrial ores are decreasing as reserves dwindle. Consequently, deep sea metal deposits are gradually transitioning from identified resources to economically viable reserves. Deposits in the Red Sea deeps along the axial trough result from tectonic and local hydrothermal processes. Continental rifting and ocean floor spreading produce fresh oceanic crust; concurrently, seafloor evaporites flow into the spreading zone and form isolated deeps. The deeps are often filled with hot stratified brines maintained by locally discharged fluids during hydrothermal circulation. Metalliferous sediments precipitate from the brines within the deeps. The ongoing multipronged study at KAUST involves: (1) acoustic characterization of the metalliferous accumulations using advanced signal processing techniques that capture the physics of granular materials; (2) comprehensive mineralogical and textural characterization of sampled sediments using SEM, EDS, XRD, XRF, and ICP-OES; (3) multiphysics instruments deployed to measure undisturbed sediment properties in-situ; (4) development of a distributed seafloor observatory for monitoring field operations; (5) innovative concentration and separation technologies; and (6) new strategies for proper tailings disposal purposely conceived for the unique field conditions in the Red Sea deeps.

1. Healthy and active Local Section organizations are vital factors in promoting the vigor and growth of the Institute. 2. Activity on the part of Local. Sections should be recognized and stim¬ulated by appropriation of funds from the Institute's treasury; and these appropriations should be as large as is consistent with the relative needs for other activities. 3. As between different Sections, the amount of such appropriations should be based primarily on the extent of activities as reflected in the number and character, of meetings held and the attendance of the members at such meetings. 4. In making a request for funds for any year, the officers of a Local Section should submit a report on the printed form approved by the Directors at their meeting on November 19, 1937. 5. A . standing Committee on Local Section Appropriations, consisting of one past chairman of a Local Section, one member of the Institute's Executive Committee, and one member of the Finance Committee, shall be appointed by the President and shall pass upon requests for appropriations and authorize payments within bounds of the budget. The committee will be guided by the principles herein outlined, always having in mind the vital importance of healthy, active sections to the welfare of the Institute as a whole.

SEARCH for a consistent theory to explain the relationship between energy input and size reduction in a comminution process has accumulated, over the years, an enormous amount of plant and laboratory data. Although some correlation of these data has been possible for purposes of engineering design and for the advancement of research in fracture, there is still great need of a means of predicting behaviour of a solid when it is reduced in size by mechanical forces. The best known hypotheses proposed to describe the energy-size reduction relationships in crushing and grinding stem from a common origin. The present article analyzes problems of comminution in the light of the precepts of this origin. Its object is to reconcile points of difference between these well known hypotheses and to present relationships more widely applicable to comminution studies. Theoretical Considerations: Most existing relationships between energy and size reduction of a brittle solid stem from a single, simple, empirical proposition.&apos; Although this proposition can be demonstrated by observation and experiment, no theoretical derivation is yet possible. Mathematically, the proposition may be stated as follows: dE = -Cdx/xn [1] where dE = infinitesimal energy change, C = a constant, dx = infinitesimal size change, x = object size, and n = a constant. Eq. 1 states that the energy required to make a small change in the size of an object is proportional to the size change and inversely proportional to the object size to some power n. No stipulations are placed on the exponent n in either magnitude or sign. In 1867 Rittinger2 postulated that the energy required for size reduction of a solid would be proportional to the new surface area created during the size reduction. As far as can be determined there is as yet no physical basis for Rittinger&apos;s hypothesis. Rittinger&apos;s hypothesis can be stated mathematically as follows: E, = K(oa-a-0 . [2] Er = energy input per unit volume, K = a constant, <ti = initial specific surface, and o2 = final specific surface. In the size reduction of particles of size x, to particles of another smaller size, x2, Eq. 2 becomes the well known relation: ET = K&apos; {l/x2-l/xx) [3] where K&apos; is a constant. Eq. 3 may be arrived at from the proposition given in Eq. 1 by integrating and by assigning a value of 2 to the exponent n. J dE = J - C dx/x2 E = Kt (1x - 1x) where K&apos; = C. In 1885 Kick3 proposed the theory that equivalent amounts of energy should result in equivalent geometrical changes in the sizes of the pieces of a solid. For example, if one unit of energy reduced a number of equal-sized particles to particles of one half the size, then the same amount of energy applied to the particles resulting from the first test should result again in a size reduction of one half or a final size one quarter the original size. Application of Kick&apos;s and Rittinger&apos;s laws to comminution has met with varied success. Gross and Zimmerley4 and Piret5 have shown that Rittinger&apos;s equation applies under certain conditions of experimentation. Walker and Shaw6 express the belief that in metal turning and shaping and in grinding of both metals and minerals the production of very fine particles (less than lP) follows Kick&apos;s hypothesis, whereas Rittinger&apos;s concept is valid for the size reduction of coarse particles. For the practical case of crushing and grinding, however, neither of the above hypotheses has received general acceptance. Bond&apos; has lately proposed that since neither Kick&apos;s nor Rittinger&apos;s hypotheses seem correct for plant design work, an energy-size reduction relationship somewhere between the two would be more applicable. The Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A, a subsidiary of Phelps Dodge Mining Company, operates a copper mining facility located in southern Peru. This "mine-forleach" operation currently produces 90,000 mtpy of copper cathode from secondary sulfide ore utilizing crushing, leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning processes. The leach solution handling and application rates have undergone constant development over the years. This paper discusses the improvements in leach application designed to: 1) satisfy the needs of the "lixiviant request rate", which requires the use of application rates as low as 3.5 L/h/m2 and as high as 15 Llhlm2 with variable rest periods according to the leach kinetics, and 2) alleviate the poor solution distribution on the surface of the leach heaps inherent to drip emitters. Low application rates result in poor surface solution distribution and the formation of upside down cones of dry, non-leached material in the top meter of stacked ore, with heavy jarosite and iron salt precipitation; moreover, ferric iron is lost as insoluble precipitates. On the other hand, high unit flows associated with poor agglomerate quality can lead to uneven solution flow patterns within the heap leading to solution short-circuits, fines migration, and ponding with adverse effects on acid consumption and recovery.

This paper presents a Cloud-based system framework for providing a web-based building information model (BIM) service. Cloud computing technologies were used to develop a BIM data center, which can handle the big data of massive BIMs using multiple servers in a distributed manner. In addition, the system allows multiple users to access the BIM data center online to submit and review BIMs concurrently. In this study, the advanced technologies/tools of web development and Cloud computing were applied and incorporated to develop a prototype system, named CloudBIM. On the client side, this study applied WebGL and HTML5 in the web-based interface development to achieve the 3D display of BIMs and the dynamic interaction with viewers through browsers. Users can access the services of CloudBIM by using PCs, laptops and tablets anytime anywhere to view the 3D model via browsers, which support WebGL. On the server side, this study used Apache Hadoop, an open-sourced distributed file system based on Google?s technologies, to establish a BIM data center. The Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) can utilize multiple servers to provide mass storage spaces in a distributed manner. Based on the use of Apache HBase, which provides Bigtable-like structured storage for HDFS, this study proposes database schema for storing the information from massive BIMs in two bigtables, named Object table and Property table respectively. In addition, Hadoop MapReduce, a Hadoop component for the parallel processing of large data sets, is utilized for model data acquisition by parsing the IFC files of uploaded models in parallel.

"This work presents the preparation and characterization of a nanocomposite based on Poly(butylene terephthalate) PBT and Brazilian smectitic clay (bentonite chocolate clay). Before being incorporated as clay nanoparticles in PBT resin, the clay was organically modified by the addition of a quaternary salt and sodium carbonate. PBT/Clay nanocomposite (96.3:3.70 wt %) was obtained by using a twin-screw extruder machine. After extrusion process, the nanocomposite was characterized by tensile, flexural and impact tests, SEM, Vicat, HDT, DSC, TGA and XRD tests. The results showed that the properties of the nanocomposite obtained were superior to those of neat PBT. Concerning the temperature of thermal distortion (HDT) an expressive gain of around 45 % was presented to PBT/Clay nanocomposite compared to PBT evidencing the interaction of nanofiller with the polymeric matrix.IntroductionPolymer-clay nanocomposites, also called as polymer layered silicates nanocomposites have attracted much attention from both industry and academia over the past decade because they frequently exhibit unexpected properties. In contrast to the traditional fillers, nanofillers, in particular, nanoclay, is found to be effective. The addition of a small amount (< 5 wt.%) can show significant improvement in mechanical, thermal and barrier properties, flammability resistance, and electrical/electronic properties of the final polymer nanocomposite without requiring special processing techniques. Also, as with other nano-size particles, the overall crystallization rate and the glass transition temperature are also affected. It is generally believed that the improvement of properties of nanoclay composites is directly related to the complete exfoliation of silicate layers in the polymer matrix. However, a processing technique that produces complete exfoliation is still a technical challenge [1,2]."

The integrity of shale gas wells in longwall chain pillars under the influence of longwall mining is a safety concern for both coal and gas operators. Previous modeling studies of gas wells in longwall pillars have shown that a FLAC3D model can predict longwall-induced stresses and deformations in gas well casings with reasonable accuracy. The predicted casing deformations can be verified by multi-finger caliper survey. This study concerns the influence of longwall mining on eight shale gas wells in a shale gas well pad located in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels under 1,030 feet of cover. FLAC3D modeling was performed to predict longwall-induced deformations in gas well casings based on site-specific mining and geological conditions. Small deformations less than 0.5 in were predicted in the intermediate casing above 600 ft depth, and very small casing deformations less than 0.15 in were predicted below 600 ft due to high abutment pressure and high frictional resistance along the weak bedding interfaces. After the first panel was mined, a 56-arm caliper survey was performed on one of the wells to measure the longwall-induced casing deformations in the intermediate casing. The predicted casing deformations were then compared with the measured deformations, which indicated that the prediction was generally in good agreement with the measurement in terms of deformation locations and magnitudes. Findings from this study provide valuable information not only for stability assessment of shale gas wells in longwall chain pillars but also for developing engineering guidelines to preserve casing integrity through adequate pillar and casing design.

The literature on shotcrete is reviewed with the object of identifying aspects that have not been addressed specifically in terms of its structural performance and manufacture as applied to underground mines. The programme and results of a series of full-scale tests on mesh- and fibre-reinforced shotcrete panels are presented, from which it is concluded that fibre-reinforced shotcrete is competent, especialy at large deformations, and is equivalent in structural performance to mesh-reinforced shotcrete for a fibre content of 3 per cent by mass: furthermore, that the support design systems developed for mesh-reinforced shotcrete are directly applicable to fibre-reinforced shotcrete. The Q-NATM system for the design of temporary tunnel support is presented briefly as one such system. It provides for the integrity of the excavation to be considered in terms of its competence and displacement determinateness, and represents the first systematic procedure for the design of temporary tunnel support. Finally, the support designed on the basis of the Q-NATM system for the main and cross-cut tunnels on the production level in the proposed BA5 block cave at Premier Mine is presented as a practical example of the design of fibre-reinforced shotcrete as part of an overall support system.

Discussion of the paper of THEODORE P. HOLT, presented at the Salt Lake meeting August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 91, July, 1914, pp. 1699 to 1708. F. S. SCHMIDT, Salt Lake City, Utah.-Any furnace that can make a chloridizing roast to yield an extraction of 92 to 93 per cent. and do this at a cost of less than 24c. per ton in a 10-ton unit opens great possibilities for the treatment of certain classes of ores. This cost does not include the salt and will be reduced to about 16 1/2c. per ton in the 35-ton furnace which are now being designed. On a trial run the roaster treated 9.6 ton: of Ontario stope fillings crushed to pass a ¼ -in. opening. The ore is well adapted to chlorination with the exception of insufficient sulphur and occasional days of high lime, but is not adapted to any other process The following is an analysis of the crude ore: Ag, 9.52; Au, 0.029 oz. Pb, 0.71; Cu, 0.11; SiO, 79.4; Zn, 0.57; S, 1.00; Fe, 7.9; Mn, 0.89 CaO, 1.20 per cent. The composition of the mix was: Per Cent. This study deals with the development of some new theory concerning the bias which will result from the employment of the t-estimator if in fact the underlying distribution of ore values is not lognormal. It is found that the t-estimator is robust as long as the logarithmic variance is small and the shape factors of the transformed distribution are not unduly large. The choice of the threshold parameter [t] for the t-estimator is important, and some hints are given how to estimate it if the sample size is small, as en- countered in borehole valuation problems.

To convert rubbish into useful materials, the essential measure is to carry out sorted collection of rubbish. The preconditions of implementing sorted collection are presented in the paper. 1 Characteristics of rubbish composition and amounts of recyclable contents are basic condition to implement sorted collection. 2 The existing available technologies of recycling, economic benefit from recycling, and disposal scheme of residual rubbish are restrained condition for sorted collection. 3 Public understanding and support to sorted collection are the key to success. 4 The government policies to be favorable for sorted collection is the pledge of success. 5 The establishment of a steady solid waste recycling market is also a guarantee to implement sorted collection continuously. 6 To establish management system of rubbish recycling as soon as possible. Further, the methods and procedure of sorted collection are discussed in detail and beneficial comments and theoretical basis to promote sorted collection of rubbish in urban area are presented; it will contribute reference value to municipal solid waste management.

The year 1937 has been outstanding in the history of the Illinois oil industry. During the course of the year the state&apos;s daily production has been trebled, increasing from 12,000 bbl. per day at the beginning to 37,000 bbl. per day at the end, and the year&apos;s total, 7,426,000 bbl. is 66 per cent above the previous year&apos;s production of 4,475,000 bbl. The production in January was 368,000 bbl.; in December it was 1,085,000. Production from the old fields increased slightly. Most of the new production is from fields in the central part of the Illinois Basin, an area that for many years was considered unfavorable to the occurrence of oil and gas. The principal producing horizon of the new fields is the McClosky "sand," an oolitic limestone in the Ste. Genevieve formation of lower Mississippian age. Although development has not yet gone far enough to permit accurate estimates of oil reserves in the new fields, it is believed that they are of the order of 100,000,000 barrels. The following are the oil fields discovered in 1937 listed in order of amount of daily production at the end of the year; Noble (Richland County), Clay City, including Southeast Clay City (Clay and Wayne counties), Patoka (Marion County), New Centralia (Clinton County), Olney (Richland County), Cisne (Wayne County),.Beecher City (Fayette County), and Rinard (Wayne County). One gas field, the Russellville, in Lawrence County, was discovered in 1937. For locations of the new fields see Fig. 1. A generalized geologic column for Illinois, showing producing horizons in the new fields, is given in Fig. 2. The total productive area of the new fields at the end of 1937 was 1712 acres, in which 230 wells were producing. Thisrty-five dry holes were drilled within 1/4 mile of producing wells. At the end of the year there were 19 drilling wells, 28 rigs standing, 18 rigging up and 4 new locations in these fields. Concrete technology continues to advance rapidly and modern mixes with five components – cement, additions, aggregates, (chemical) admixtures and water – often have characteristics which differ significantly from the older three component mixes – cement, aggregates and water. Recent trends have favoured higher strength classes and lower water/cement ratios, resulting in greater dependence on admixtures to compensate for reduced workability and to meet the (often competing) demands for workability in the fresh state and setting time. The application of testing methods which reflect the true rheological properties of the concrete has not developed at the same rate as the mixes themselves and it is still not uncommon for the slump or flow table test to be used as the only acceptance test for fresh concrete.A joint review of problems in bored piles (drilled shafts) and diaphragm walls cast using tremie methods by both the European Federation of Foundation Contractors (EFFC) and the Deep Foundations Institute in the United States (DFI) identified a common issue. The review determined that many of the problems were caused by (or in part due to) the use of inadequate concrete mixes with inadequate workability, or insufficient stability or robustness of the mixes. It further identified the primary causes as inadequate concrete specifications and inadequate testing procedures. The consequences of these problems are often significant and it has been recognised that spending more time and money on getting the concrete right is the most cost effective approach.A joint Concrete Task Group was set up by EFFC and DFI in 2014 to look at this issue and this guide is the output from that Task Group. A research and development project, funded by the Sponsors of this guide, is being carried out by the Technical University of Munich in conjunction with the Missouri University of Science and Technology. This project includes desk studies, laboratory testing, and onsite testing at worksites in Europe and the US. The research work will be completed during 2016.

Two quantitative methods for Mineral Resource classification have been applied to a copper skarn deposit beneath a large open pit that is mining a world-class porphyry complex. A drill hole spacing study (DHSS) using the single block kriging method (SBK) and a conditional simulation method (CS) were applied to the skarn deposit and the results compared. Inputs to both processes included the proposed mining rate and stope designs to estimate the likelihood of achieving grade and metal production targets. Mineral Resource classification of the deposit considers the relative precision of tons, grade and metal predictions over quarterly and annual production periods. These relative precision estimates are calculated at 90 per cent confidence interval (CI). The SBK method represented the production period as a single large block. Kriging estimates were performed in the large block for various synthetic drill hole grids, and the estimation errors derived. The error was assumed to be normally distributed due to the large block size and quantity of samples, allowing CIs to be deduced. The CS method followed a conventional sequential Gaussian simulation workflow where grades were simulated with a 5 ft × 5 ft × 5 ft grid node spacing inside mineralisation domains. Each realisation was then averaged up to monthly production volumes represented by a combination of designed stopes, and the coefficient of variation (CV) for the averaged grade was calculated. CI on the relative precision of grade predictions were then deduced from the CVs. The two methods produced similar results; despite being calculated independently. CS results were used to report uncertainty in the proposed life-of-mine plan and highlight areas for additional drilling. SBK results were used as the basis for Mineral Resource classification as this method has been previously applied to the skarn deposit.

Copper mining operations have increased in Iran in the past decades due to price increases and potential for creating jobs in developing countries. Iran consists of many copper mines. The mining operations have a positive economic impact on the region, but may also be the cause of adverse environmental effects. Environmental aspects and the health impact of respirable particulates on the communities and agricultural production in the immediate vicinities have been under scrutiny by the regulatory agencies to ensure sustainable development. The impact of an open-pit mine on the air quality and extent of particulate pollutant dispersion in different directions and times is the focus of this paper. The results of the modeling have been validated through ambient air monitoring. Monitoring stations were installed in different areas within the mine unit operations and around it including background areas where PM10 values were 7 µg/m3. Outside the Complex, particulate concentrations were monitored in 9 different stations and up to 25 km distance. Modeling of point, area, and volume sources was conducted using a 9- year meteorological database. The results showed that particulate quantity decreases rapidly below local standard value of 150 µg/m3 at 2.5 km around the mine and the main pollution is due to the crusher and tailings dump areas. Model outputs were compared to the actual values measured by the air quality monitoring network including villages and crop fields. High overall correlation of about 76% was obtained for most of the locations but lower values were reported for more complex terrain in the region. Remedial actions recommended included road water spraying and better management practices to avoid overloading trucks.
