There are two general types of oil flotation processes, froth and bulk-oil. In froth flotation, the coal concentrates are removed in the form of a froth or foam composed of air, liquid, and solids. Mechanical or pneumatic agitation of a coal slurry with suitable frothing agent causes a selective action of the bubbles to the coal particles which are carried to the upper portion of the pulp in the flotation cell; the refuse is wetted by the water and does not rise with the froth, but goes out as tailings. The other type of flotation process, bulk-oil, consists of thoroughly mixing the slurry or pulp with 30 to 50 pct of its weight of oil. The coal agglomerates with the oil and drops to the bottom of the cell while the refuse is wetted by the water and is carried away in suspension. The concentrate granules may be screened and drained to 12 to 15 pct moisture. The minus 200 or 300-mesh is very effectively treated by this process. The Trent process is a bulk-oil type which has been used for coal cleaning on a commercial basis, but its use has been discontinued in this country. Froth flotation of bituminous coal should be subdivided into two distinct fields: (I) separation of a dry coal product such as recovered from an aspiration system; (2) separation of a minus 48-mesh slurry such as produced from a thickener in a wet cleaning plant. The capacities, performance, and general operating characteristics are very different in these two fields. The recirculated slurry in a washery becomes oxidized and is much harder to treat than a dry dust. It is difficult to clean a slurry containing an appreciable percentage of plus 48-mesh without also floating some high-ash clays minus 200-niesh in size. On the other hand, while working with an aspirated dust, good results have been obtained in floating coal as coarse as 3/16-in. Because of the relatively low capacity of flotation machines as compared with conventional fine-coal cleaners .and because of the greater quantity of reagents required to float coarse coal, there is usually no point in considering flotation on bituminous coal for anything coarser than approximately 48-mesh. In some coal-cleaning plants, good separations are being made down to 80 or even 100-mesh by a less expensive system of coal cleaning than flotation. The Pittsburgh Coal Co. carried out extensive tests on laboratory batch machines and on small units of both pneumatic and mechanical agitation types from 1930 to 1935 and have operated six, eight, and then twelve mill-size mechanical subaeration cells from 1932 to 1944 This paper will deal with some of the operating phases and results of coal-flotation practices as derived from this experience, and more specifically with the flotation practice at the Champion No. I preparation plant. The experience gained from the research and initial experimental work contributed greatly to the successful operation of the mill-sized flotation units at Champion.

Hydraulic cutting tests made on samples of Pennsylvania anthracite (3,700 psi and 260 gpm) were promising enough for the Bureau to establish a full scale experiment in an anthracite mine. Water pressure and quantity for mining anthracite were arbitrarily established at 5,000 psi and 300 gpm (1,000 hp). For full-volume flow, hydraulic pressure is controlled by orifice size with the displacement pump. The hydraulic jumbo was designed for maneuvering on pitches from 0° to 20° in any direction and for a coalbed ranging in thickness from 10 feet 6 inches to 15 feet. All motions of the jumbo are by oil hydraulics. Jet flow is controlled (start-stop) at the face, through an interlocked pushbutton system. One button is in the operator's cab; one, at the pump station; and one (a safety shutoff), near the mining face. To December 1962, 7,400 tons of bed material had been mined at an average rate of 0.800 ton per minute, with an average power requirement of 14.125 kilowatt-hours per ton. In January 1963, the objective was changed from an engineering-development basis to a research basis--to determine, ultimately, the most efficient level of operating characteristics for maximum response, as measured by mining-out rate. This research phase of the project is not yet complete, but conclusions, and the method of arriving at them, will be made the subject of another Bureau publication. It should be noted that as of December 1963 nearly 13,000 tons of bed material had been mined, at rates as high as 1. 3 tons per minute for a complete face advance.

The Republic district, Washington, is of new interest because of the discovery of new gold-silver ore within a unique structural pattern. The camp was revived in 1937 fol1owing installation of a plant to treat low-grade disseminated ore at Knob Hill and further stimulation followed discovery of "cross vein" breccia ores in 1939. Previous writers 1-2 ascribed the quartz veins to a latite porphyry stock, but are in disagreement as to its precise location and extent. This study leads to the conclusion that the ores have a more profound parentage linked to a broad system of thrust faults and folds, the mechanical origin of which is related to a southward trending (Sanpoil) syncline connecting with the Lewis and Clark zone of shift described by Billingsley and Locke3 in 1939. The Republic anticliue and a cross anticline recumbent against Cretaceous granodiorite. and involving some 4000 ft of Eocene andesite flows and early Miocene lake beds, localize the ores, mainly along the east flank, in a series of openings simulating drag folds and steeper than the folded flows. These broad structural features no doubt reach deeply into the basement rocks, where at appropriate crossings and junctions it is suggested that heat effects gave rise to ore-making materials, including, in this instance, intrusive breccias that later were mineralized, and comprising the broader bodies of new ores. The breccia ore is seen crosscutting the earlier narrow quartz veins with a welding of the two at junction areas by a second surge of ore minerals. The ore mined and developed since 1937 equals district production from 1896 to 1937 The ores are typified by cherty quartz, adularia and some barite, with fine pyrite and marcasite, polybasite, pyrargyrite, tetrahedrite and gold. Selenium is present, possibly with gold, as a normal selenide. The disseminated ores, as well as the vein and breccia ores, are localized principally in one 500-ft flow (Knob Hill andesite), which has been traced around the crest of the low northward-plunging Republic anticline. The gold-silver ratio in the earlier narrow veins is about I to 4 and in the disseminated and breccia ores, I to 7. The latter higher silver ratio is deemed to reflect the character of the second surge of mineralization. Sills and dikes of the Columbia River (Miocene) basalt cut the folded structure and ore, thus placing the mineralization in the middle Miocene. Application of shallow, seismic reflection to problems associated with mineral exploration, mine planning, abandoned-mine detection and environmental evaluation has been successful in many geologic settings. The increased dynamic range of recording equipment and the decreased cost of processing hardware and software have made shallow, seismic reflection a cost-effective means of imaging geologic targets significant to mining operations. Seismic data possess sufficient resolution in many areas to detect faulting with displacement of less than 3 m (10 ft) in coal seams as thin as 2 m (6.5 ft) at depths of 200 m (655 ft). Subsurface voids associated with abandoned mines at depths of less than 20 m (65 ft) can he detected and mapped. Seismic reflection has been successful mapping disturbed subsurface associated with dissolution mining of salt. Complex geologic features associated with deposition of various hydrothermal minerals have been mapped with high-resolution seismic reflection at depths from 80 m (260 ft) to more than 300 m (985 ft). Faults in sulfur-hearing cap rock over salt domes have been accurately located, allowing improved efficiency of the dissolution mining process. Shallow, high-resolution seismic reflection has the potential to enhance the economics and safety of mine operations.

Late in 1942, the increasing demand for zinc, coupled with the growing shortage of miners and the knowledge that some abandoned mines would have to be reopened for prospecting and development, led to considerable thought as to the possibilities of further mechanization in order to conserve man power. The ore bodies, locally termed "sheet ground," are an important ore bed in some mines and are in the lower part of Boone formation of the Mississippian Series. Some mines contain interbedded layers of nearly pure galena and sphalerite in horizontal sheets ranging in thickness from a thin seam to several inches and is persistent over large areas. This type of ore body offered the best opportunity for study and experiments. The use of Jumbo drill carriers was advanced but some doubt was expressed as to the adaptability of Jumbos as then in use to mine headings as compared to post and arm mounting (Fig I). Another consideration was the introduction of truck haulage when several mines were trackless. A drill frame, built to carry 2 4-in. drifters, was mounted on a truck chassis. This design proved a failure as it was not rigid and the resiliency of the tires and springs allowed too much play. Long screw jacks were then used to hold the truck firmly in place, but placing the jacks and securing the truck required more effort and time than setting up post drills, so the truck carrier was abandoned. The use of a bull dozer underground had been under consideration for some time to be used in "brunoing" the broken dirt from behind pillars and other inaccessable places so the slusher drags could load without double dragging the dirt. A dozer with hydraulic blade lift was purchased and R. I. Tuthill, Superintendent of Section 30 Mines, suggested that a long drill arm be substituted for the blade, and the drills mounted on the cross member. The hydraulic lift would permit drilling holes at any required spacing. The "cat" was very mobile and answered the problem of a trackless mine. The initial tests showed that the "cat" would make a good carrier, but the hydraulic controls were not positive enough to keep the drills in alignment while drilling. The next step was to build a small hoist. This hoist was attached to the power take-off on the "cat" and by means of sheaves and a double line of 3/8-in. hoist cable, a positive control for raising and lowering the boom was obtained. To avoid serious injuries to the drillers should the cable break, a safety chain was fastened to the drill boom and hooked into a slot in the back of the "cat" frame. A different power unit was obtained for the "cat," as a state law prohibited the use of internal combustion engines in mines. A custom machine shop had just placed on the market a small hoist powered by a Model A Ford engine that had been very ingeniously converted to a slide valve engine using compressed air. AN increased demand for information in regard to the effect of gaseous elements in steel has accompanied the recognition of the importance of grain size. Attempts to correlate grain-size characteristics with gas con-tent, particularly oxygen in solution or in the form of included metallic oxides, have not been universally successful. Certain definite effects of dissolved gases are recognized; specifically, the role of hydrogen in causing internal cracks or "flakes" and that of nitrogen in preventing excessive grain growth of ferritic chromium steels. When irregular behavior or properties are found in a well-known steel and no definite cause for the abnormality may be assigned on the basis of chemical and metallographic tests, dissolved gases are frequently blamed as the culprits. The solubilities of hydrogen1 and nitrogen2 in pure liquid iron are known but of the ternary systems, iron-alloying element-gas, only the Fe-Si-N3 and Fe-Cr-N systems have received attention and here the study was confined to liquid alloys. Krivobok4 published a curve show-ing the solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-Cr alloys but gave no informa-tion on the experimental procedure employed. The considerable experimental work reported on the Cr-N binary alloys has been reviewed by Hansen.5 It is generally agreed that the nitride CrN is a stable phase although the existence of nitrides within limited temperature ranges of stability, viz., Cr3N2 and Cr2N, has been disputed, Adcock6 and others7 have reported a eutectic between Cr and CrN at 1580°C., although the supporting evidence is not complete.

"Coal seams in Tashan Mine of Datong Coal Group in China average 49.2 ft (15m) thick and have been mined by the top coal caving longwall mining method of large mining height. Mining height was 12.5 ft (3.8m) and the top coal caving height was 36.7 ft (11.2m). The gateroad pillar between panels was 124.6 ft (38m). During retreat mining, serious bumps occurred in the gateroads on both sides of the pillar affecting safety production. Therefore, pillarless mining was experimented.Using numerical modeling and comparative study of cases of similar mining condition, it was decided to employ a 19.7 ft (6m) wide pillar, rather than the previous 124.6 ft (38m) wide pillar. Support system for the gateroads was designed and implemented. During gateroad development, pillar failure conditions and entry deformation were monitored. Hydraulic fracturing method was employed to cut off the K3 sandstone along the entry rib so as to reduce the abutment pressure induced during retreat mining. Support reinforcement method combining grouting and advanced reinforcement methods was proposed to insure stable gateroad ahead of mining. Methane drainage and nitrogen injection were implemented to eliminate hazards associated with mine fire and spontaneous combustion.Since the development of gateroad has just completed, and retreat mining has not begun, the effectiveness of the proposed methods is unknown at this point. However, monitoring will continue until after mining. RECENT jig practice has shown such marked departures from the pronouncements of the textbooks, particularly as to particle size recovered and size range of feed, as to make it desirable to reexamine the mechanism of jig action. This paper presents the results of such a study. The general conclusions of the paper are: I. A jig bed is a bi-functioned as well as bi-parted body. The upper layer comprises a plastic stream moving slowly in a substantially horizontal direction from feed lip to tail board. It serves to rough out tailing and light middling and to pick up heavy middling and lift it out of the jig box. The lower layer acts as the ultimate separating means by absorbing concentrate and rejecting heavy middling. 2. The separating function of the lower layer is performed in three definitely different ways, depending upon the relative sizes of the grains presented to it and those composing it. EXPERIMENTAL The experimental work consisted of close and long-continued visual observations of operating beds in a plunger jig, eccentric driven, and in determinations of the settling rates of various metal spheres through a quartz bed under various conditions of operation. Falling velocities were measured by an ingenious method devised by A. C. Dorenfeld, a student in the Mining Department at Columbia. Spheres of different metallic alloys, Y8-in. diameter, were cast with a short piece of fine copper wire frozen in to serve for suspension. A short piece of black cotton thread was looped to the top of the wire to serve as an indicator. The set-up for a test is shown in Fig. I. The thread should be boiled, if necessary, to make it freely water absorbent. The piece of clean plate glass D is supported rigidly at the proper height in a vertical position. The white scale E is similarly supported behind the glass. At the beginning of a test, D is filmed with water by holding it (best with clean rubber finger cots) under running tap water. It is then clamped in approximate position and C, already wet, is laid across it and drawn straight and vertical with the upper end at or near the top of D, and the ball A slightly above the top of the expanded bed. The water film holds the string to the glass. For a test the string is released, its upper end position noted just after the top of the ball becomes submerged, when the corresponding time is read, and thereafter simultaneous readings of position and time are taken as desired. Results of the visual studies of the bed are given at the pertinent places in the following discussion. Results of the settling tests are summarized in Figs. 2 and 3. DEFINITIONS The name bed as used herein refers to the entire mixture of solids and water filling the jig box. A layer is a stratum of a bed composed of particles of substantially the same specific gravities. A granular product is long-range when it approximates a crushed or ground product limited as to upper size only; a shorlrange product is one closely sized. In 2001, the Springvale Coal Mine determined a requirement for a 360 m deep vertical airway to ventilate ongoing underground longwall mining operations. The project, referred to as the Springvale No 3 Ventilation Shaft, was completed in 2003 - 2004 by blind boring a 4.25 m diameter hole from the surface to the coal seam at 360 m depth. The shaft was completed with a 3.5 m inside diameter lining made from a continuous watertight steel and concrete composite pipe. Presented from both the clientÆs and the contractorÆs perspective, the following paper describes the process of constructing a blind bored ventilation shaft for this application. Beginning with the clientÆs definition of the requirements and specifications for the shaft, the paper describes the steps followed by Springvale Coal prior to awarding the contract. Springv aleÆs process involved a thorough site investigation including procurement of geotechnical data for prospective contractors and the management of issues relating to safety, quality and the environment. The clientÆs view is followed by a description of the planning and works performed by their nominated shaft drilling contractor, Ardent Underground Pty Ltd.The contractorÆs description of the works includes the details of the blind shaft drilling and lining construction process used for this application. The design of the shaft lining installed at Springvale Coal was the first of its type to be used in Australia. The successful installation of a watertight composite shaft lining and the safety of the method, which did not require any personnel to enter the shaft or the mine, were among the positive outcomes from the project.

IT is a somewhat curious circumstance that the newest of the Institute's several awards should be conferred in the oldest of our several professional fields—for there is little question that geology and mining have antedated metallurgy and petroleum. Perhaps so did geophysics. After all, one geophysical instrument, the magnetic compass, has been successfully employed for many centuries. Young in years the Jackling Award may be, but in distinction—whether in terms of the title it bears or in terms of the first three medalists (Reno Sales, E. D. Gardner, and the late Father MaceIwane)—the Jackling Award is already one of the ranking awards of the Institute. The name of the 1957 medalist will bring added luster to an already illustrious roll. J. L. Gillson was born and brought up in Evan-ston, Ill., in an area characterized by singularly flat and uninspiring topography, and devoid of ore deposits and even of bedrock—a most unlikely environment from which to expect a future Jackling medalist to emerge! On graduating from high school he enrolled as a chemistry major at Northwestern University. At the end of his frkshman year his scholastic prowess had won him a prize of two chemistry books. But these went unread, for about this time he came under the spell of U. S. Grant, that distinguished and enthusiastic geologist who for many years was head of Northwestern's geology department. From thence forward Joe was a dedicated geologist. After a Navy interlude in World War I, he went to MIT for graduate work, substituted for the late Professor Palache for one year at Harvard in mineralogy, received his doctorate at MIT and stayed on as a meniber of the MIT faculty, where the geology department was headed by that great dean of all economic geologists, Waldemar Lindgren. In 1926 Joe spent a summer looking into barite deposits for the du Pont Co., and since 1928 he has been du Pont's chief geologist. Do men who lead such active lives in our exploration organizations generally have permission to publish their observations? Do they generally find time to publish, even if they have permission? Alas, no. But in Joe Gillson's case, yes. His bibliography runs to well over two score papers, including one of the very first papers in this country on the applications of petrography to problems of Portland cement. He has written on such topics as the origin of talc and the genesis of ilmenite, fluorspar, and alkaline rocks. Each year for a number of years his annual reviews of industrial minerals in the Mining Congress Journal have been eagerly awaited. - Do men who do so much to advance their science have anything left to give to the advancement of their profession? In Joe Gillson's case, yes. He has been a vice president of the Mineralogical Society of America and has been active in the councils of the Society of Economic Geology, particularly in their research programs. This year he is president of the American Geological Institute, currently perhaps the most challenging post to which a geologist may be elected. His contributions to AIME scarcely need documentation, so I shall mention only three—his chairmanship of the Committee on Democratization of the Institute, a committee whose work and recommendations brought a new and hopeful leaven to AIME at a time when this was sorely needed; his chairmanship, a few years ago, of the Industrial Minerals Division; and his current place on the Board of Directors as Vice President of the Institute. Such' a catalogue of contributions and achievement, even as condensed as I have had to make it, certainly merits the Jackling Award. Yet, implicit although not often expressed in the conferring of most awards is the hope that besides recognizing a distinguished career, it will provide stimulus for further effort. In the present instance, such an expectation is already well on the way to fulfillment. Only recently Joe Gillson has undertaken the editorship of a new and greatly revised edition of the Institute's Seeley Mudd volume, Industrial Minerals and Rocks. And so, Mr. Chairman, it is with pleasure and enthusiasm that I present Dr. J. L. Gillson for the 1957 Jackling Award.

THE object of this paper is to present a brief summary of the dust control system in use on the 3,825-foot level at the jaw crusher station, Lake Shore mine. During the years 1936 and 1937, dust survey reports were presented to the management showing that high dust concentrations were being created during operating periods. At that time, however, this crusher was running only an hour or so each shift, and it was felt that no large capital expenditure for dust control equipment could be justified. In order to afford some protection to the operators, a number of respirators then on the market were .tested and the 'Comfo' respirator was adopted for use by the crusher-men. In 1938 this crusher began to handle a large share of the total mine tonnage and the hours of operation were increased. Further dust sampling showed increased dustiness with the longer operating time. It was also realized that the operators suffered considerable inconvenience if they wore their respirators throughout the shift. If the respirators were not worn, then dangerous amounts of dust were being inhaled. The fact that the crusher station was situated on the 3,825-foot level limited the means that could be employed to eliminate the dust hazard. At that rime there was not available the 5,000 c.f.m. of fresh air which would be required to sweep out or dilute0 the dust, and there was also no way of disposing of the contaminated air without passing it on for other men to breathe. Thus it became apparent that a self-contained dust disposal system would have to be installed.

For the past several years, inflation has placed increasing pressure on our economic system. The total effect of inflation is complex when combined with other factors which affect the economics of equipment. A mathematical model is described herein which can be programmed on a computer to determine the effect of inflation on economic life and profits after taxes. The computer output results in graphic plots which clearly show the relation of various percentages of inflation to life and profits. Inflation has become a common topic of conversation in the recent past. What is it and how can it be measured? What effect does increased inflation have on equipment policy? Research now in progress at the Construction Institute at Stanford University is beginning to unravel some of the mystery of inflation. As a start, let us answer the first question by defining the word inflation. The dictionary says that inflation is "an increase in the volume of money and credit relative to available goods resulting in a substantial and continuing rise in the general price level. It appears, in fact, that we are in an inflationary spiral which is "a continuous rise in prices that is sustained by the tendency of wage increases and cost increases to act on each other." 3 Inflation behaves just like compound interest. It takes more dollars of future years to buy an equal amount of a given commodity, be it a material or a service. Let us assume an annual inflation rate of 5 percent. "A promising long-term solution to uranium tailings reclamation has been the establishment of vegetation directly on the waste material. The soil profiles of areas vegetated for 0, 3, 8 and 10years are characterized as to the extent of soil development . The characteristics are compared with the visually interpreted soil profile. Organic matter content is presently the best analytical judge of soil development. Vegetation procedures have produced a build-up of organic matter in the top 10cm of tailings where natural microbial populations flourish. The CN ratio is high and the profile depth shallow, suggesting the need for additional fertilizer applications.IntroductionThe reduction of surface erosion and improved aesthetics of uranium tailings has been accomplished by the establishment of a vegetative cover. In 1971 research concentrated on developing methods of plant establishment at minimal cost and soil amendments on uranium tailings in Elliot Lake , Ontario. One process of stabilization used on a large scale was direct seeding of grasses and legumes into the tailings which had received only limestone and fertilizer treatments. Fertilizer additions were made for varying lengths of time in subsequent years to maintain the established cover.Maintenance-free vegetation would be possible once a soil profile developed with sufficient nutrient recycle and plant regeneration capabilities(1). Tailings vegetated in 1971, 1973 and 1978 that had received either 3 or 5 years of maintenance fertilizers were examined for soil development profiles. The extent of soil development and the relative effect of time and fertilizer would provide direction on reaching the goal of a self-sustaining cover.This paper is an abridgment of Division Report MRP /MRL 81-126 of the same title(2)."

"With regard to control environment pollution in the roasting pretreatment of sulfur & arsenic-bearing gold concentrate, roasting of double-layered pellet was proposed. In the paper, the characteristics of double-layered pellet roasting were studied. Removal and solidification rates of sulfur and arsenic were investigated as primary factors. The result indicated that the removal and solidification rates of arsenic reached up to 95.91 % and 98.95% while the sulfur was 97.19% and 97.90% respectively on the premise of adopting slaked lime as solidified agent at temperature of 6000, the package proportion of 2.14 and roasting time of 3h. However, pyrite and arsenopyrite were transformed to hematite and magnetite and product of solidification mainly consisted of calcium sulfate, calcium arsenate and calcium sulfite within optimum roasting parameters.IntroductionUtilization of refractory gold resources has been gradually concentrated on with the depletion of the gold resources which are easy to deal with in the world [1]. Sulfur and arsenic-bearing gold ore is a typical refractory gold one, in which ultrafme gold is encapsulated in the structure of metal sulfide minerals [2,3], so it gives poor recovery through direct cyanide leaching. These refractory ores need pretreatment before the process of cyanide leaching to undermine lattice structure of pyrite and arsenopyrite containing gold [4] so that the gold could touch with cyanide solution [5]. Among various methods of pretreatment, conventional roasting method is most effective, but this process generates gases such as S02 and As203 harmful to environment. Therefore solidification roasting was proposed to solve this problem occurring in the conventional roasting at the end of last century."

"The Marmara Ironworks was not the earliest ironworks in Ontario, but it was distinguished from other early works in a number of ways. It was established on an ambitious scale as a self-sufficient and, for the time, sophisticated community. In effect it was an iron plantation on the scale and scope of those at Hopewell, Pennsylvania and Saugus, Massachusetts(1). It was, besides, the only one of the few early ironworks in Upper Canada which operated almost to the end of the nineteenth century, albeit in fits and starts, and which used magnetic ores rather than bog iron ores (limonite). Furthermore it is the only works which has produced archaeological interest over a number of years. The ironworks is on the east bank of the Crowe River near Highway 7, on Lots 7 and 8, Concession 4, Marmara Township, Hastings County, Ontario. It is the property of the Village of Marmara, and the extant remains encompass about 2. 5 acres of the original 2000 or so which made up the original grant. The mineral riches of the Canadian Shield had been known since the days of the Jesuit missionary-explorers. A consortium headed by Alexander Henry and the Duke of Gloucester planned to exploit the copper near Sault Ste. Marie during the last part of the eighteenth century, but nothing came of the venture(2). This attempt may have grown out of Lord Dorchester's suggestion that private enterprise be encouraged in order that the iron ore which ""abounds"" in Canada might be exploited(3). John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada was also anxious to see iron working develop. Simcoe was eager to encourage many enterprises, among which ""the development of iron mines""(4) - Governor Gore had been approached by John Mason for help with his ironworks in Norfolk County (5). Three Americans had applied for permission and support to erect an ironworks on the Gananoque River at the falls to become known as Furnace Falls. They were granted 1000 acres of land in fee simple to encourage their endeavor(6). Sir Peregrine Maitland, only a few months after taking up his duties as Lieutenant Governor in 1818, intended to visit the ""bed of iron ore on the Crow River"" (7) - Maitland was to provide a good deal of support, both moral and substantive, to Charles Hayes when he came to Canada in 1820."

Bulk cargoes, including iron ore fines, must be shipped according to the rules agreed by the member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). One critical safety measure is the transportable moisture limit (T?ML) required for Group A cargoes (cargoes that may liquefy). A number of shipping incidents involving iron ore fines from India, where liquefaction of the cargo was suspected to be the cause, have brought the issue of iron ore fines T?ML into the spotlight. Extensive research has been undertaken by the major iron ore producers from Australia and Brazil to support the IMO in developing regulations for the shipment of iron ore fines. To this end, iron ore companies sponsored the AMIRA P1097 project to establish a modified T?ML test approach specific to iron ore fines. The project was undertaken by TUNRA Bulk Solids, CSIRO’s Centre for Bulk Solids and Particulate Technology and the University of Auckland, with project leadership provided by Creative Process Innovation. Extraction of silica from the taconites of the Wisconsin Gogebic range by high temperature digestion in caustic solutions has been described.1,2 The ores consist essentially of hematite, goethite, and microcrystalline quartz, detailed descriptions of which appear in the literature.1,3 It is the purpose of this communication to describe some results obtained from a laboratory investigation of an alternative method, that of sintering the ore with sodium carbonate followed by water extraction of the sodium silicate produced. This is analogous to the Deville-Péchiney4,5 soda ash sinter process for the production of alumina from bauxites in which soluble sodium aluminates are formed. Raw mixes of the desired composition were prepared from 10.0 g minus 200 mesh samples of taconite and sintered in nickel crucibles in a muffle furnace controlled to within ±10°F of the operating temperatures. The resulting sinters were pulverized and then leached in distilled water with continuous agitation for 30 minutes at 95°C. The suspensions were vacuum filtered and the residues dried, ignited and weighed. Iron assays on the ignited samples were made by the standard dichromate procedure after dissolution in hydrochloric acid. "The third phase of the Bagram Drainage System project at Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan included construction of a shallow, 540-m long, 1.8-m inside diameter drainage tunnel. The tunnel penetrated mostly stiff to hard clayey and silty soils. The contractor’s Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) to use pipe-jacking with a microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) instead of the specified two-pass Earth Pressure Balance method was evaluated and supported using hand calculations. Contractor support was provided throughout the project by providing design reviews and instrumentation monitoring during construction. This paper compares the value-engineering proposal to the specified method and describes the construction conditions encountered. INTRODUCTION As part of a larger improvement project at the Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan, a shallow, 540-m long, 1.8-m inside diameter drainage tunnel was constructed to provide additional capacity for Coyote Creek to pass below several critical structures, including taxiways and the main runway, for mitigation of recurring flooding (see Figures 1 and 2). Overburden over the tunnel crown ranged from about 3 m to 5.5 m. An existing cast-in-place twin barrel concrete culvert runs approximately parallel to the new tunnel and is within about 8 m at its closest point. The contractor’s Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) to the specified two-pass Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) method (steel ribs and lagging or steel liner plate with a carrier pipe later grouted in-place) called for installation of the required drainage pipe by pipe-jacking (one-pass installation) using a slurry microtunnel boring machine (MTBM). The critical nature of the operations at the air base resulted in significant construction coordination challenges and a greater than usual need to avoid excessive settlements. Substantial restrictions were placed on drilling of investigative borings and installing instrumentation near runways and taxiways due to drill mast height. The prime contractor was SERKA TAAHHUT INSAAT A. S. (SERKA), the microtunneling subcontractor was Ludwig Pfeiffer Microtunnel GmbH & Co.KG (Pfeiffer), the jacking pipe designer was Gollwitzer Pipe and Shaft Technology GmbH (Gollwitzer), and the contractor’s tunnel engineer was Lachel & Associates, Inc. (Lachel). Lachel provided contractor support throughout the project including preparation of a VECP/Design Summary (including interpretation of existing and new geotechnical information), design reviews for jacking pipe, estimating settlement of an existing drainage structure above the new tunnel, and instrumentation planning, monitoring, and analysis during construction."
