This Bureau of Mines report reviews the various methods of removing the liquid from tailings slurries that contain very fine grained solids. Gravitational settlement, centrifugation, filtration, and thermal drying methods are discussed in detail. Chemical additives, electrokinetic dewatering, and the rotary trommel screen are also mentioned. Lists of dewatering equipment and suppliers are given in the appendixes to assist the planner who must choose the most efficient, economic, and practical method of dewatering very fine grained mill tailings.

Remote control roof bolting is approaching reality with the continued improvement of a number of components and subsystems being developed by The Bendix Corporation under sponsorship of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Department of Energy. The era of remote control research in roof bolting was initiated by the USBM in June of 1973 with the award of a contract to Bendix Corporation to design and build a roof bolt bender/inserter device. One year later in June of 1974, the Bureau awarded five parallel R&D contracts to develop a longer-than-seam-height flexible roof drill. The Bendix flexible drill design has been the most successful of the five, has been thoroughly tested in both laboratory and underground situations, and has been incorporated into a number of machine applications along with the roof bolt inserter. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the advantages of remote control bolting from both a safety and productivity standpoint. Applications of the flexible drill and roof bolt inserter on a number of government and industry supported programs are used to illustrate the advances being made toward the goal of remote control.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was twofold. The first phase of the work was to determine the technical and mechanical feasibility of defluorinating low-grade siliceous fluorspars on an intermediate scale by high-temperature pyrohydrolysis in a rotary kiln. The second phase was to react the liberated hydrogen fluoride (HF) offgas with alumina monohydrate to produce commercial-grade aluminum fluoride (85 percent AIF3). The two phases of the work were to be integrated into a single continuous process. Evaluation of the data shows that low-grade siliceous fluorspars can be successfully defluorinated, either in a solid or a molten state, in a gas-fired rotary kiln in the presence of water vapor at 1,250° to 1,350° C. The water produced by combustion of propane was sufficient to yield defluorinatians of 75 to 85 percent.

As part of ongoing research to define mechanisms of microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR), this work describes the activity of Bacillus l1chen1formis JF-2 (ATCC 39307) Mosurfactant against crude oils with varying compositions. Surfactant based MEOR improves oil recovery by lowering the oil/brine interfactal tension (IFT) therefore permitting oil to be displaced or solub1lized into the aqueous phase.? MEOR is an Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) process which allows for the introduction of chemical and miscible fluids, in the form of microbial metabolic end-products, through the injection of microorganisms into the reservoir or stimulation of indigenous reservoir microbial populations. These microorganisms represent a replenishable in situ source of acid, gas, biopolymer, solvent, or surfactant products which can be. supported and manipulated by the addition of simple and inexpensive nutrients to enhance the recovery of oil. Microbially mediated surfactant production represents one mechanism of MEOR. Bacillus licheniformis JF-2. has been used in a mode 1 MEOR system based on Berea sandstone cores (permeabilly .85 to 400 md) to examine surfactant based MEOR of medium to heavy crude oils (API gravity 38.1° to 17.5°). Enhanced oil recovery was achieved with all oils tested using either cell free culture supernatants or microbial suspensions as injectants with no detrimental effect to the oil. Spatial distribution of cells following mf?crobtal flooding was analyzed with scanning electron microscopy. Data indkate complete distribution of cells with a predominance of organisms located distal to the point of injection. There appears to be no sign:if1cant recovery trend with respect to oil composition.. The biosurfactant produced by Bacillus lichen1form1s JF-2 lowers the interfacial tension of all oils tested equally well.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDiscovery of these unusual fluorite deposits was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines late in 1951, shortly after the first locations were made. A brief investigation of the deposits by the Bureau revealed seven principal outcrops of fluorite in two areas. The smallest outcrop continuously exposes massive fluorite over an area 25 by 55 feet; the largest outcrop is a similar exposure 180 by 240 feet. The deposits, appear to be sharp-walled, low-angle, tabular ore bodies in granite and are at least 10 feet thick.The Bureau investigation of the deposits included bulldozer strip-trenching, drilling and blasting rock cuts, and channel sampling across three of the largest outcrops. This sampling indicated an average grade of 97.2 percent CaFp and 1.44 percent SiO2.Preliminary metallurgical tests on the ore indicate that it can be concentrated to acid-grade specifications by simple gravity methods. One laboratory test recovered 78.4 percent of the fluorite in a product containing 98.7 percent CaF2, 0.25 percent SiO2, and 0.10 percent Fe2O3."

Recent studies conducted at Virginia Tech have shown that ultrafine coal particles can be selectively coagulated and separated from mineral matter without the use of traditional agglomerants or flocculating agents. This technique utilizes hydrophobic interaction forces to induce coagulation of coal particles, while particles of mineral matter are dispersed using pH control. After selective coagulation, the coal coagula can be recovered by a sedimentation technique. In the present work, factors such as pH, particle size, and solids concentration have been examined. A wide range of coal samples have been successfully upgraded using this technique.

A possible process for extracting tellurium and antimony from a residue generated in alkaline sulfide leaching of telluriumbearing alkaline skimming slag was proposed. The central composite design was employed to define the optimal leaching conditions for tellurium and antimony extractions from the residue sample. Using a 23 factorial matrix, the best performance for tellurium and antimony extractions (96.36% and 99.64%) were obtained at 175 g L−1 Na2S concentration for 80 °C during 60 min. The notable degree for influencing tellurium and antimony extractions was leaching temperature, Na2S concentration, and leaching time. The analysis of variance results indicated that the regression model was significant and suitable to be used for the optimization of independent variables within the range. The model was validated under optimal operating conditions based on the experimental design results. Antimony and tellurium in the leach liquor were separated and recovered by H2O2 oxidation followed by Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. 98.93% of antimony was precipitated selectively during H2O2 oxidation, while 95.06% of tellurium was precipitated during Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. NaSb(OH)6 and elemental tellurium was obtained as the product.

Selenium (Se) based materials find wide applications in rectifiers, solar cells, photographic exposure meters, data storage devices, xerography and anticancer agents. They are also used in the glass industry to eliminate bubbles and remove undesirable tints produced by iron. In addition, Se is highly reactive towards a wealth of chemicals that can be potentially exploited to convert Se into other functional materials such as CdSe, ZnSe, Ag2Se. Here, we report a review of structural investigations of Se based materials in glassy and nanostructured forms. Glasses having varying amounts of Se and Tellurium (Te) were doped with group IV and V elements such as antimony and tin. Structural changes accompanying the composition variation were characterized with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy. At the same time Se-Te nanoalloys were synthesized in aqueous micellar phase using Na2SeO3/Na2TeO3 as the Se/Te source. Morphology change from nanoparticles to nanoribbons was investigated using Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM/TEM) techniques. Structural investigations were also done for well defined morphologies of Se based nano-biomaterials obtained in the presence of water soluble protein bovine serum albumin (BSA).

Before the outbreak of the war in 1914, the only electric-furnace smelting plant operating on a commercial basis west of the Mississippi River was an electric pig-iron plant in California; rare metal ores were not smelted, concentrates of molybdenum, tungsten, uranium, and vanadium ores being shipped east for reduction. Practically no- chrome ore was being mined, and only comparatively small amounts of manganese ore. Today there are two electric smelting plants in California, one in Washington, one in Iowa, and four in Colorado; two plants are under construction in California, and one in Montana. Ores of manganese, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten are now smelted in the West, and although uranium and vanadium concentrates are still shipped to the East, they will probably be treated in western plants in a short time. PT. Krakatau-POSCO coke making plant, located in Cilegon, Indonesia, is the results of the know-how and experience of Paul Wurth (PW) in coke making field. The plant has a capacity of 1,321,000 t/y of gross coke achieved by two coke oven batteries with 42 top charging Paul Wurth “Jumbo” ovens each. PW “Jumbo” oven with a useful volume of 78,92 m3 allows decreasing drastically the number of pushing/charging operation per day with a consequent reduction of the diffuse emissions. Gas treatment plant with a capacity of 88000 Nm3/h has been designed in collaboration with DMT GmbH & Co. KG, adopting the latest technologies with specific design know-how. PT. POSCO-Krakatau plant has been successfully commissioned and started-up in October 2013. The present paper will highlight the main technology features applied in PT. Krakatau-POSCO project for both coke oven and gas treatment plants.

Stockpiled and currently produced zinc plant residues containing zinc ferrite are to be treated at a rate of 350 tonne per day in a plant that is being constructed at the Risdon works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited (E.Z.). Start-up of the plant is scheduled for December, 1970. The residue is to be treated by a hydrometallurgical process that was developed by E.Z. in Australia, by Det Norske Zinkkompani in Norway, and by Compagnie Royale Asturienne des Mines (Asturiana de Zinc) in Spain. The process, as it is to be used at Risdon, is simple, consisting essentially of two stages : 1. A leaching stage at atmospheric pressure in which the zinc ferrite contained in zinc plant residue is dissolved in spent electrolyte, fortified with make up sulphuric acid, at a temperature in the range 70 to 95ºC. Undissolved solids containing lead and precious metals are separated for sale to a lead smelter. 2. An iron precipitation stage at atmospheric pressure in which ferric iron is precipitated from a slightly acidic solution at 90 to 95ºC as ammonium jarosite, a crystalline double sulphate which is relatively coarse, and is easily filtered and washed free of zinc-bearing solution. Calcine is used to neutralise the acid that is liberated during precipitation of the iron. Also included in the Risdon plant are a separate stage for oxidation of ferrous iron by injection of air, and a pre-neutralisation stage, using recycled oxidation stage pulp, to neutralise excess acidity from the leaching stage before the jarosite precipitation stage. The residue treatment plant consists of conventional equipment such as covered agitated vessels, thickeners and filters. Operation will be continuous and product solution will join the main zinc plant circuit for further purifications and electrolysis. Marketable zinc production will be increased by 70 tonne per operating day by the treatment of residue.

"A computational model to investigate solid/liquid phase change transitions for binary alloy under directional solidification is presented. Conservation equations are developed by using an homogeneous formulation. A second order accuracy method of time and space based on finite volume approximation has been evaluated by comparing results to spectral solution for time-dependent solutal convection developping in a melted alloy. For extended model to solid/liquid interface effects time amplification of solutal perturbation injected near the interface is described before considering solutal convection is melt.IntroductionThe enthalpy method gives a front fixing approach for energy equation without introducing coordinate transformation. The interfare position is recovered a posteriori [1]. A number of authors have extended this approach so as to include the convection phenomena within the two phase 'mushy region' [2, 3, 4, 5, 6].We have developed a time-dependent enthalpy-porosity formulation for directional solidification [4, 6, 8]. The interaction between solid and liquid phases is modelised by a Darcien type force in the phase change area. The behaviour of the melt is similar with the flow of an incompressible fluid in a porous medium. This force is proportional to the relative phase velocity. It corresponds to a damping force depending on the anisotropic permeability of the 'mushy zone'. The permeability depends on the liquid fraction and on the size of·solidification microstructures. An informative discussion of a new slant on the general approach of continuum mechanics needed to analyze the formation of mushy zone is given in [12]. The method is extended to the presence of species diffusion: the solutal Stefan condition which expresses the solute incorporation or rejection across the interface is accounted implicitly in a species equation valid in all the domain [14, 15]."

Prior to 1912, coal research for Republic Steel, Corporation was limited to a periodic box test conducted in a commercial coke oven. Then in 1912, a Koppers movable-wall test oven was -built to research wall pressures for selected blends and to conduct other varied research work. In the 1950's economic pressures caused a reassessment of position resulting in the establishment of a Coal and Coal Chemical research group in 1956. In 1958 this group, along with other groups of research endeavor were incorporated into the new Republic Steel Corporation Research Center at Independence¬ Ohio. Currently this section is divided into four groups. 1) Coal Preparation, 2) Coal-Chemicals, 3) Coal Characterization, and 4) Coal Carbonization. The objective of each group is described, and a brief listing of the work done under the first three groups is indicated. A more detailed description of the studies by the Coal Carbonization group of the coking characteristics of Republic Steel Corporation's coals as blended among themselves or in conjunction with selected purchased coals follows. The wall pressure, contraction, and stability index criteria are specified, and the method of assessing these criteria as a function of blend composition is indicated.

Experimental data demonstrate that physical properties of porous rocks change under pressure. In this paper an assumption is made and proved that under pressure the changes of physical properties such as porosity, density, permeability, resistivity and velocity of elastic waves are controlled to a large extent by the pore compressibility of rocks. It is also shown that the pore compressibility of rocks can be determined, within the range of pressures from 0 to 20,000 psi, by knowing the maximum pore compressibility and the magnitude of the pressure. Mathematical equations were developed which permit one to define changes in physical properties of porous rocks under pressure. These equations were verified by experimental data obtained from the study of sandstones. INTRODUCTION In studying the behavior of porous rocks under pressure in the field of petroleum technology, the most interesting aspect is the observation of those properties which characterize the rocks as possible reservoirs — for example, porosity, permeability, resistivity, density and the velocity of elastic waves. The literature dealing with this problem mainly contains data concerning the study of only one or at most two of these parameters, but not of the group as a whole. An attempt is made in this paper to find general equations involving each of these parameters, which will permit the study of the behavior of rocks under pressure. All experimental data used here were obtained from the investigation of consolidated sandstones. EXPERIMENTAL In addition to the use of published experimental data, an experiment was carried out which studied the main physical properties of sandstones under pressure. Two homogeneous quartz sandstones were chosen for this purpose: (1) the Torpedo sandstone from Kansas, and (2) the Medina sandstone from Ohio. The porosity of the Torpedo sandstone was 20.2 per cent, and that of the Medina 8.7 per cent. Permeabilities were 45 md and less than 1 md, respectively. Each sandstone contained about 5 per cent clay minerals, consisting mostly of kaolinite and chlorite, which were distributed quite evenly throughout the samples. One cylindrical sample 2 in. in diameter and 5 in. in length was cut from each sandstone and then saturated in a vacuum with a 3N solution of NaC1. This high concentration was used in order to obtain true formation factors and to decrease the swelling of the clay minerals. The methods of mounting the samples and measuring the changes in porosity and resistivity were practically the same as those described by Fatt and Mann.1,2 Changes of resistivity under pressure were studied for sandstones with 100 per cent water saturation, and for sandstones with the irreducible water saturation. The irreducible saturation was obtained by enclosing the saturated rock samples in relatively fine silicate powder so as to remove the water by capillary action. This procedure is described by Orkin and Kuchinski.3 Changes of permeability with pressure were determined at room temperature using nitrogen as the flowing medium. In studying the effects of pressure, one series of measurements was made using an internal pore pressure Pi equal to the atmospheric pressure, while the overburden pressure Pe ranged from 0 to 20,000 psi. A second series of measurements was used over the same range of overburden pressure, but with an internal pore pressure of 1,800 psi. When the results were compared on the basis of net overburden pressure (Pe — 0.85 Pi ), there was practically no difference for these two sandstones. Most high, purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz-generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found which is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies - Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco, Inc. - mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, Illinois. Both companies mine from various locations within a ten mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Company mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, Arkansas.

The Gualcamayo Mine is located in the Andes Mountains north of San Juan, Argentina (Fig. 1). A property of Yamana Gold Inc., it declared commercial production in July 2009 and has a total mineral reserve and resource base of approximately 88 t (3.1 million oz) of gold. Crushing operations for the openpit mine are located in a 13,500-m3 (477,000-cu ft) underground cavern with a ceiling height of 22 m (72 ft). More than 3,600 m (11,800 ft) of tunnels are used to access the cavern and convey the ore. The project as described in this paper relates to the design and construction of the main cavern, conveyor system exit tunnel, the mechanical system access tunnels and two 4.2-m- (13.7-ft-) diameter shafts (Ore Pass #1 and Ore Pass #2) (Fig. 2). Preliminary engineering for the project was performed by Hatch Chile. Rizzo Associates Argentina, S.A., a division of Paul C. Rizzo Associates, Inc. (Rizzo), was contracted to provide geomechanical and geotechnical support for the construction of the access tunnel system and geomechanical design and construction supervision for the cavern and shafts.

Precious metals have been sought by man through time. The search has been the cause of many historic events as well as the founding of the famous Mexican, Minion centers of Durango, Guanajuato, Zacatecas and others. Bacis, a silver - cold deposit in the State of Durango was one of the lesser known centers established during Spanish colonial times. During the past year, metal prices have suffered a substantial decline, resulting in the closure of many mines. Through astute exploration, development and exploitation of the mine, the effect of the low prices has been offset and the mine is surviving these hard times.

The announcement of a minable reserve of 13.6 Mt (16 million tons) averaging 0.9 g/t (0.027 oz per ton) Au and 2.4 g/t (0.71 oz per ton) Ag for the open pit-heap leach reserve at Red Mountain No. 3 in Ouray County, Colorado, by Cornucopia Resources in November 1985 brings another open pit-heap leach precious metal ore body to the production stage. With about 8.2 Mt (9 million tons) of waste and metallurgical studies showing acceptable recovery rates, low reagent consumption, and good final percentage recovery, Red Mountain is a discovery that will add to the precious metal inventory of the US. Frank Baumgaruler of Denver, CO, recognized the precious metal potential in Red Mountain No. 3 and acquired all of the old claims. James Matlock conducted a field reconnaissance over Red Mountain No. 3 independently of the Baumgartner activities and recognized epithermal alteration and mineralization in the Tertiary volcanics. He recommended acquisition of the ground and was able to obtain rights and drill six core holes for Amoco in 1982. Amoco drilled a further nine core holes in 1983, but then dropped the property. Cyrano Resources examined the data and through its consulting geologist, V.F. Hollister, acquired the rights dropped by Amoco. In 1984 Cyrano began further drilling of the ore zone demonstrated by Amoco but they were then acquired by Cornucopia Resources. Cornucopia completed development of the property and commenced the permitting process in 1986. The property was recognized as a disseminated gold deposit by both Baumgartner and Matlock, and both deserve credit for properly evaluating mineralized outcrop in the Tertiary volcanics. However, Cornucopia recognized the profit potential in the heap leach exploitation of the ores and de- serves credit for completion of premine feasibility studies. The discovery is clearly a geological one, but the premine engineering studies were essential to the conversion of the prospect to a commercial mining enterprise. The deposit lies on the circular bounding fault of the Silverton caldera. Two reprints follow that help understand the geologic setting of the ore controls.

This report contains Bureau of Mines analyses of 291 samples of crude petroleum from the Gulf Coast Area of Louisiana and Texas. Included are 65 analyses from 51 Louisiana fields and 226 analyses from 216 Texas fields. Analyses from the Texas fields include 90 from 58 Upper Gulf Coast fields, 47 from 28 Middle Gulf Coast fields, and 89 from 40 Lower Gulf Coast fields. The analyses represent fields that produced 1,000 barrels or more per day during at least one of the years 19.57 through 1961, with the exception of 23 analyses from the Texas fields. The fields considered are listed by state and geographical groupings, with field names arranged alphabetically within each grouping. The tabulation also includes information concerning the geological sources of the samples. General characteristics of the crude oils and analytical and computed data determined from the analyses are summarized. Crude oil production data are given for the fields for 1960 and 1961 and are cumulative through 1961.
