Long distance, overland conveyors require significant capital outlay of which up to 70% may be contributed to the cost of belting. Significant savings may be achieved by identifying possible risk areas and applying modern technology methods to reduce or eliminate risk. Recently, Sasol Coal commissioned an overland belt conveyor system comprising three belt conveyors of 7 km, 5 km and 4.5 km in length. These were designed and constructed taking the above into consideration. Contained in the paper are the belt conveyor system requirements, designing assumptions and methods applied in the designing process as well as ways and means to eliminate or at least reduce risks.

Super Cells are an innovative, open-shaped bi-directional static load testing device used to promote concrete flow during placement while utilizing greater cross-sectional area of the pile to achieve large applied axial loads at relatively low hydraulic pressures (≤ 250 bar). This paper describes the results of multi-level load testing performed on a sacrificial drilled shaft that was 3.8 m (12.7 ft) in diameter and 110.6 m (363 ft) in length for the Jiaxing-Shaoxing River Crossing Bridge that spans Hangzhou Bay in Shaoxing, China. The test shaft was instrumented with embedded strain gauges and telltale rods along with displacement transducers at the top of the pile to measure the load-induced displacements along the length of the shaft. Load testing was performed twice using a Super Cell placed near the tip of the shaft, prior and subsequent to tip post-grouting, and then again using a Super Cell placed higher in the shaft. The axial resistance for the tested conventional drilled shaft was more than 5 times greater than the estimated axial resistance. In addition, the axial resistance after tip post-grouting (347,100 kN (39,033 ton)) was about 5.3% greater than the ungrouted axial resistance (329,600 kN (37,050 ton)). INTRODUCTION During the past few decades, the magnitude of axial, lateral, and flexural loading has considerably increased due to updated design codes, larger superstructures, and the manner in which extreme event loading (e.g. seismic and scour) is incorporated into design. The diameter and depths to which bored piles or drilled shafts are constructed have increased considerably during the last three decades due to the advancements in equipment technology and capabilities. In addition, monoshaft foundations have become increasingly used, as one large drilled shaft is able to replace a group of smaller diameter piles connected by a cap. Correspondingly, adequate strata, for both side and end resistance, must be discovered/determined as well as achievable to be able to construct the required foundations to support the greater design demands. As design demands have increased, the need to ensure integrity, quality, and performance of a constructed drilled shaft has become ever more crucial. Load tests are essential to validate design assumptions of side and end resistances, to assess the behavior and load transfer characteristics of the constructed drilled shafts, and to evaluate construction methods. Load tests utilizing a bi-directional static load testing (BDSLT) device can achieve considerably large applied axial loads and can be performed more economically, in less time, and in a much safer manner than conventional top-down static load testing methods.

Recycling of electronic wastes is an important subject both from an environmental point of view and also the recovery of valuable materials. In this research, PC board scraps were leached to recover Cu, Ag, Au and Pd. Due to the high cost of the shredding process and to avoid secondary pollution from odors and dusts, board scraps were cut into 5X5 cm2 pieces. To determine the most effective leachant, aqua regia, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, ammonium persulfate and potassium persulfate were tested. The effect of the leaching parameters, the leachant concentration, temperature, leaching time and liquid to solid ratio were studied and optimized using response surface methodology.

The syngenetic, metamorphic water, and source bed concept theories of ore deposition proposed by Anton Gray, C, Lo Knight and others, to explain ores in sedimentary rocks, are challenged on the basis of a survey of the literature and personal observation, A hydrothermal origin for the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt deposits is indicated by the presence of post-Roan age igneous rocks and post-gabbro mineralization, the wide distribution of ore in the various Lower Roan lithologic types, and the zoning of the copper-iron sulphlde minerals and minor elements The proposal by Gray and Knight that igneous rocks are not favorable as guides to nonferrous metal deposits, and Gray's hypothesis that the redistribution of connate waters and their dissolved metals by metamorphic processes was responsible for the emplacement of ores, are rejected as contrary to field evidence, The absence of exposed potential igneous source rocks is shown to be an invalid argument for the proponents of any syngenetic hypothesis, The common association of ore deposits with calc-alkaline intrusive rocks and their derivatives is, however, demonstrated to be convincing evidence that an exploration program based upon a magmatic theory of origin, would have found most of the important known non-ferrous metal deposits of the world, It is urged that prospecting be continued on the sound basis of accumulated knowledge of the lithologic and structural facts surrounding known ore deposits.

The isothermal dendritic precipitation of y in p CuZnSn is compared with the isothermal formation of Widmanstatten a plates in p CuZn. Although both precipitates are evidently bounded by semicoherent interfaces, the dendritic shape of y evolves through smooth "sinuoidal" shape perturbations, while a-p interfaces tend to be strictly planar, or rnicroscopically faceted. An estimate of the average inter-facial free energy of cube-oriented y in p through the Mullins-Sekerka analysis indicates that it is low (of the order of 50 ergs per sq cm). Interface mication is apparently controlled by volunle dij'usion, and the observed anisotropy in growth probably results from anisotropy of inter facial free energy. Studies of the grain boundary precipitation of y in p indicate that the precipitate can grow in both $ grains, but becomes unstable with respect to the grain with which it shares a mobile semicoherent interface. Facets observed at the tips of Kurdjumov-Sacks-oriented Wid-manstatten a plates correspond to variants of an irrational hahit, near (231)0. Comparison with Hu and Smith's determination of relative interfacial free energies of a-(3 boundaries suggests that this system possesses an extremely deep o cup, which results in an ej'ective low-o zone. The possible effects of such a cup on the stability of a-p interfaces are discussed, a needles, grown during rapid continuous cooling, possess microscopically smooth interfaces, and are characterized by a high degree of' damage in the region of the boundaries. These boundaries, induced to move on tempering at 200"C, become faceted as equilibrium is approached, which seems to indicate that boundary structure and mobility in this system are dependent on the local degvee of departure from equilibrium MULLINS and sekerkal have elucidated the phase boundary stabilizing effect of surface tension. a factor not taken into account in previous treatments of morphological development. Their analysis applies to the isothermal growth of a pure spherical precipitate (planar in the limit of infinite radius) in a slightly supersaturated solution, under conditions of inter-facial local equilibrium and isotropy of interfacial free energy. More recently, several other factors which might tend to stabilize planar interfaces have received attention. These are: i) interface diffusion;4"8 and ii) slow interfacial reaction. cahn7 included a slight anisotropy in interfacial free energy, and showed that it has no stabilizing effect, but forces shape perturbations to reflect the anisotropy. shewmon4 noted that dendritic morphologies are rarely observed in solid-solid systems, and, in particular, postulated that slow interfacial reaction occurs at all boundaries between proeutectoid ferrite and austenite, except those which propagate parallel to {11 l)y planes (for Kurdjumov-Sachs [K-S] related phases). Previously, Aaronson~ had proposed interfacial reaction at the broad faces of Widmanstatten plates, and expected that the lateral motion of high-mobility incoherent ledge edges would produce planar precipitates bounded by law-mobility semi-coherent interfaces. The problem of interfacial reaction during the dif-fusional formation of precipitates has often been ignored, although it is apparent that a small component of chemical reaction must exist at any moving interface." Further, all solutions of the diffusion equations for boundary conditions corresponding to isothermal growth predict infinite growth rate at time zero, so that elements of interfacial reaction would be most easily detected at early times. However, reported deviations from diffusion control are comparatively rare," and the local-equilibrium diffusion-control model appears adequate for the description of many isothermal growth systems.'2"9 Cahn14 has treated the problem of migration of an interface which is able to reach positional energy minima, and concluded that such an interface, if subjected to a high local ther-modynamic "driving force", may migrate normal to itself without the benefit of ledges. The aim of this work was to study the use of slags to desulfurization of cast iron. It was proposed to use alumina instead fluorspar. In addition, marble waste was used instead lime. Simulations applying Thermo-Calc software were performed in order to obtain the theoretical phases thermodynamic data. Then, a comparison between theoretical data and experimental tests were performed. The cast iron was melting in induction furnace at 1550°C. Slags composed mainly for CaO and Al2O3 were used to cast iron desulphurization. It was observed that increasing liquid phase, the desulphurization reaction was favored. Besides, it was found that cast iron desulfurization occurs by top slag mechanism.

"Modern microprocessor systems make it possible to use several variables to anticipate changes in the process and to react with responses before upsets can be magnified by the process or by control action.Through tighter control, ""insurance"" can be eliminated from process set points without affecting product quality. In actual operation with a traveling grate furnace this control philosophy has produced savings of up to 20% in fuel consumption and 8% in fan power usage while producing a more consistent quality product.IntroductionA straight grate indurator, or pelletizing machine, consists of a continuo us moving train of pallets on which a feed stream of unfired, ""green"" pellets is deposited on a hearth layer o f fired pellets. This bed moves through several zones in the furnace where it is dried, preheated, fired and cooled by streams of gases which are pulled or blown through the bed by a series o f large process fan s. Control systems for straight grate plants are designed to maintain gas flow through the machine to ensure that sufficient time and heat are available to raise the temperature of the entire green bed to 1300°C where hematite bonding take s place.For the pas t two year s a new approach to control systems using microprocessor-based instrumentation has been designed and tested in an existing plant with a straight grate indurating furnace processing magnetite ore. The purpose of the test was to determine the most efficient operating setpoints for all levels of production above fifty per cent of design capacity. Through a combination of feed forward control, variable setpoints and additional loops, significant savings have been realized. Thus far the project has taught us much about control systems design and operation, energy utilization, and the process itself."

To evaluate geochemical aspects of sheared zones, 35 samples of granitoid rocks from an area of shearing >5 km2at Derehamzeh, Iran were studied geochemically. Relatively unaltered samples within the shear-zone area average 38 ppm Cu, 1.45 ppm Mo, 4.6 ppb Au, 0.21 ppm Ag, <1ppm Re, 46 ppm Zn, 28.5 ppm Pb, and 0.34% S. Bleached, hydrothermally-altered samples areanomalous in Cu (>896 ppm), Au(>59.5 ppb), Ag(>24.4 ppm), Re(>1.28 ppm), Zn (>164 ppm), Pb(>218 ppm), and S(>0.9%). Some samples from bleached sheared zones that are highly anomalous in Cu (5000 ppm), Mo(23 ppm), Ag(74 ppm), and Au(200 ppb) are characterized by a typical sericitic alteration assemblage consisting of sericite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and granular quartz. The main anomalous zone extends over about 0.4 km2in the southern part of the area. The strong Cu-Mo-Au-Ag association in the sericitic shear zones suggests a possible relationship to porphyry cop-per mineralization, similar to that found in northern Chile. Further studies on drill-core samples in the southern sericitized shear zones are required to determine if more extensive porphyry-type sul?de mineralization is present.

"The use of scandium in industrial applications is expected to rise in the coming years, in large part due to the expected adoption of new, clean energy technologies such as solid oxide fuel cells or Sccontaining high strength aluminium alloys. Given that the supply of Sc is currently dominated by only a few countries (Russia and China) other sources for scandium extraction need to be investigated. This paper looks at different options for the recovery of scandium from waste solutions generated during the production of TiO2 pigments via the chloride process route. In particular, a direct solvent extraction (SX) approach and possible options for concentrating scandium before the SX step were investigated. It was found that the presence of Ti during solvent extraction causes severe formation of stable emulsions, which can complicate the successful application. This was particularly a problem after multiple contacts of the organic phase with fresh aqueous phase. On the other hand it was noticed that the presence of certain elements in the solution, e.g., iron, could possibly be utilized to concentrate scandium in a solid precipitate.INTRODUCTIONMany newly developed high-tech products depend on the use of chemical elements that are only produced in very small quantities. This can result in high and fluctuating prices, as can be seen from Figure 1, which may cause substitution with inferior alternatives, if possible at all (Reck & Rotter, 2012; US Dept. of Defense, 2013; Whittaker, 2011). One example is scandium (Sc) a member of the extended rare earth element family. There are only a few scandium ore deposits, but most Sc is produced from the processing of by-products of other metallurgical processes (Melcher & Wilken, 2013). Increasing demand for scandium metal and oxide (Sc2O3, scandia) is coming from its increased use in applications such as ceramic lasers (Li, Ikegami, & Mori, 2005; Rainer et al., 1982), high strength aluminium alloys (Lathabai & Lloyd, 2002) as well as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) (Thijssen, 2011). Especially, the spread of climate friendly SOFC’s, which are a commercial product today (Bloom Energy, 2014), is expected to be a main driver for future Sc2O3 demand. However, the rate of market penetration of this green technology depends on the availability of high purity Sc2O3 (>99.999%), since it specifically contributes to longer life-time and better safety of the SOFC’s (Bloom Energy, 2014; Irvine, Politova, & Kruth, 2005)."

"Degradation of lead anodes has always been a major concern among the electrowinning industries. In this study, the effect of agitation of the zinc electrowinning solution on the integrity of lead anodes was investigated. Galvanostatic experiments were performed at 37±0.5°C using 0,600 and l000rpm magnetic stirring rates for 24 hours. The Pb02 layer formed on the anode surface was reduced to PbS04 (discharged). The discharge information was used to calculate the amount of Pb02 present on the surface. Weight loss measurements along with the discharge calculations revealed that the degradation rate of the lead anode increased as the solution was stirred more vigorously. Furthermore, the amount of remaining Pb02 on the surfaces was decreased as a function of solution velocity. Therefore, it may be concluded that, degradation rate oflead anodes is controlled by detachment of the corrosion products from the surface rather than by electrochemical reactions. IntroductionElectrowinning is one of the extraction stages of zinc, in which pure zinc is deposited from acidic solution after froth flotation, roasting and leaching processes. The anode electrode materials play important roles in the electrowinning process. Their electrocatalytical capacities determine the oxygen evolution overpotential, and consequently the cell potential and energy efficiency of the zinc electrodeposition [l]. Purity of the zinc deposited on the cathode is affected by the solubility and corrosion resistance of the anode materials. Using insoluble materials as anode in the electrowinning leads to the higher purity of the deposited metal on the cathode[2]. Lead (Pb) and its alloys have been used as the anode in the zinc electrowinning because of its special properties such as relatively low cost, low melting point, insolubility in solutions containing sulphuric acid and high conductivity in both states of metallic and oxidized [3, 4]. In zinc electrowinnig, zinc reduction occurs on the cathode (reaction 1) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) (reaction 2) is the main anodic reaction [5, 6]."

The Bureau of Mines investigated separating HF from HF-SiF4-H2O mixtures by passing the mixed gases through a sodium fluoride slurry in an airlift scrubber and forming a mixed precipitate of NaHF2 and Na2SiF6. The oven-dried precipitate was thermally dissociated in two stages. The first stage was carried out at 400° C and dissociated NaHF2 to NaF and HF. Condensation and analysis of the evolved HF proved it to be 97 to 99 weight-percent HF containing 0.79 to 0.99 weight-percent H2O and 10 to 93 ppm silicon. The second stage was carried out at 700° C and dissociated Na2SiF6 to NaF (for recycle) and SiF4. The quantity of HF recovered from gaseous HF-H2O-air mixtures decreased with increasing relative H2O concentrations. Air was beneficial when scrubbing extremely dilute wet HF gases. At HF partial pressures of 0.24 and 0.013 mm Hg in the scrubber entrance gases, HF partial pressures of 6.2 x 10-4 and 9 x 10-6 mm Hg were obtained, respectively, in the scrubber exit gases. Scrubber efficiencies were 99.7 and 99.3 percent.

The introduction reviews the tunnelling carried out in Singapore since the early 1980s. Between 1983 and 1990, Phases 1 and 2 of the mass rapid transit system were constructed. These included some 20 km of bored and cut and cover tunnels together with 18 underground stations. Some particular points of interest in this massive project are briefly commented upon. Reference is also made to other underground or underwater schemes undertaken during this period such as the proposed large caverns project and the submerged tunnel to Pulau Seraya. A description of the subsurface works, now under construction in Singapore, follows. This includes an all underground North-East railway line 20 km long with 16 stations. At a budget of US$ 3 billion, this is a major civil engineering undertaking. Another project is the extension of the railway to Changi Airport which involves 3.5 km of twin tube tunnelling together with a major underground station which is fully integrated into the airport terminals. An on-going program of further major railway extensions over the next 10 to 15 years is in place and an outline is given of some of the most important underground sectors. Other proposed projects such as the underground roads system and the deep level sewers are briefly described. Together they demonstrate the very significant volume of underground construction scheduled for the next century in Singapore.

Two of the aluminum-alloy systems previously studied-the alumi-num-titanium and the aluminum-chromium-exhibit a peritectic reaction at the extreme aluminum end of the diagram. Preliminary work indi-cated that the aluminum-zirconium and certain other aluminum systems were similar in this respect. The present paper, the twentieth of a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories, reports the results of a recent investigation of equilibrium relations in aluminum-zirconium alloys of high purity, which confirm the preliminary observations. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS There has been only one investigation of the aluminum end of the aluminum-zirconium system. Sykes1 prepared and studied alloys containing 0 to 70 per cent Zr. The lowering of the freezing point of aluminum by the addition of zirconium was found to be very little, if any (less than 2°C.). He placed the solid solubility of zirconium in aluminum at room temperature between 0.57 and 0.97 per cent. A few other investigators have attempted to determine the com-position of the intermetallic compounds occurring in this system. Hönigschmid2 obtained the compound ZrAl3 as a by-product during the preparation of ZrSi2. He made no attempt to prepare other aluminum-zir-conium compounds. Weiss and Newmann3 prepared an alloy by heating aluminum with a double fluoride of potassium and zirconium. When this alloy was treated consecutively with caustic soda and hydrochloric acid, there was a residue, which contained approximately 72 per cent Zr and 28 per cent Al (Zr3Al4). Marden and Rich4 prepared an alloy in the same way, treated it with caustic soda, and obtained a residue of silver-white crystals, which contained 70 per cent Zr and 30 per cent Al (Zr3Al4).

Recent jig practice has shown such marked departures from the pronouncements of the textbooks, particularly as to particle size recovered and size range of feed, as to make it desirable to reexamine the mechanism of jig action. This paper presents the results of such a study. The general conclusions of the Paper are: I. A jig bed is a bi-functioned as well as bi-parted body. The upper layer comprises a plastic stream moving slowly in a substantially horizontal direction from feed lip to tail board. It serves to rough out tailing and light middling and to pick up heavy middling and lift it out 01 the jig box. The lower layer acts as the ultimate separating means by absorbing concentrate and rejecting heavy middling. 2. The separating function of the lower layer is performed in three definitely diflerent ways, depending upon the relative sizes of the grains presented to it and those composing it. Experimental The experimental work consisted of close and long-continued visual observations of operating beds in a plunger jig, eccentric driven, and in determinations of the settling rates of various metal spheres through a quartz bed under various conditions of operation. Falling velocities were measured by an ingenious method devised by A. 6. Dorenfeld, a student in the Mining Department at Colum- bia. Spheres of different metallic alloys, 3/8-in. diameter, were cast with a short piece of fine copper wire frozen in to Serve for suspension-A short piece of black cotton thread was looped to the top of the wire to serve as an indicator. The set-up for a test is shown in Fig. I. The thread should be boiled, if necessary, to make it freely water absorbent. The piece of clean plate glass D is supported rigidly at the proper height in a vertical position. The white scale E is similarly supported behind the glass. At the beginning of a test, D is filmed with water by holding it (best with clean rubber finger cots) under running tap water. It is then clamped in approximate position and C, already wet, is laid across it and drawn straight and vertical with the upper end at or near the top of D, and the ball A slightly above the top of the expanded bed. The water film holds the string to the glass. For a test the string is released, its upper end position noted just after the top of the ball becomes submerged, when the corresponding time is read, and thereafter simultaneous readings of position and time are taken as desired. Results of the visual studies of the bed are given at the pertinent places in the following discussion. Results of the settling tests are summarized in Figs- 2 and 3. Definitions The name bed as used herein refers to the entire mixture of solids and water filling the jig box. A layer is a stratum of a bed composed of particles of substantially the same specific gravities. A granular product is long-range when it approximates a crushed or ground product limited as to upper size only; a short-rafzge product is one closely sized. The boron review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. The US was the world&apos;s second largest producer and the largest consumer of boron compounds during 1990. Boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the US totaled 1.13 Mt (1.2 million st), including 565 kt (662,800 st) of boric oxide (B2O3) in 1990, according to US Bureau of Mines estimates. Total value amounted to $404 million. This was slightly higher in production than 1989 but down in value, reflecting a softening in boron product prices. Total world production of boron mineral concentrate and chemical tonnage in 1990 was estimated at 3 Mt (3.3 million st), which corresponds to about 1.3 Mt (1.3 million st) of BO,. World production in 1990 was about the same as in 1989.
