Comparatively little has been published relating practical experience with the control of the solid content of washery water systems that must be "closed." A "closed" system is one that for some reason may not be cleaned by the emission Of any effluent Of high ''lid 'content to be rep1aced by 'lean water in Order to hold the solid content of the waste water within reasonable bounds for efficient washing. It is the Purpose of this Paper to describe practical experience with such a water system and to present data that it is hoped may be of some use to those who are faced with a similar problem. The washery clarification system described comprises three thickeners and three filters, and although it is admitted that each of the fields of water settling and thickening and filtration offers a wide scope for investigation, the authors are not attempting to present the answers to these problems but to set down the results of some experience along these lines, making no claims as to the ultimate solution of the problems in hand. The subject of water clarification has vast ramifications; for example, the science of flocculation as applied to water settlillg and filtering opens up fields of wide possibilities of which as yet little is known. A comparatively recent entry into the field of water treatment, which may offer possibilities of practical application, is the use of "wetting" agents such as "Aerosol." General Arrangement of Water System So that the reader may obtain a comprehensive picture of the factors concerned in the control of a closed water system, it is necessary to give a brief description of the washing plant that is serviced by the water system to be described in the following pages. As we are not primarily concerned with the washing plant in detail, only a brief description of the flow of coal as it relates to the water system will be given here. For a more detailed account of this type of washer, the reader is referred to earlier papers,1,2 The washer, which handles o to 4-in, raw coal (750 tons per hour) is an American Rheolaveur plant of two complements; the coarse coal or sealed discharge plant and the fine coal or free discharge plant. The sealed discharge plant (Fig. I) consists of twin 48.in. primary launders, each having two washing boxes, supplemented by one 32-in. rewash launder, which also has two washing boxes. "Push" water for washing and conveying coal in these launders is supplied from a constant-head tank under pressure head of 10½ ft. at the point of introduction at the feed end of the launder. This tank also supplies water for upward or vertical currents used in the Rheolaveur or washing boxes. Each box discharges into a sealed boot elevator (Fig. I).

THE absorption of oxygen by molten metals is a quick and convincing method to determine the metallurgical characteristics of various types of furnaces.1 The investigation was restricted to the use of coreless induction furnaces. A major variable in induction furnace practice is the frequency and its influence was studied by comparing melts made in a 5000-cycle and a 60-cycle induction furnace respectively.2 The authors are not aware that such a comparative study has been made before and therefore present this paper in the belief that the results will be of general interest. ANALYTICAL METHODS FOR DETERMINATION OF OXYGEN IN NICKEL An analytical procedure for determining NiO by a quick and simple, laboratory method has been worked out in collaboration with Dr. Herty, of the Pittsburgh Station of the Bureau of Mines. It was found that Dr. Herty's aluminum method as used for the. determination of FeO in iron and steel was very suitable for use with nickel if instead of hydrochloric acid a 10 per cent solution of nitric acid is used for bringing the metal into solution. Essentially this method involves deoxidizing the nickel-oxygen alloy with aluminum (2Al + 3NiO = Al203 + 3Ni) and determining the resulting Al203 by a residue analysis. The original oxygen content can then be calculated from the amount of Al-20,. The method as suggested by Dr. Herty3 is referred to in the present paper as method B. A slight modification of method Bled to the application of method A, a description of which is given below according to F. W. Beiter?:3

Instantaneous resistance change during martensitic transformation in Fe-30 at. pct Ni alloy has been studied using a low-noise electronic system. The smallest signals recorded in this investigation were of the order of 10 pv. These small signals did not show the initial increase reported by earlier investigators to support a double shear mechanism.&apos; A variety of pulse shapes and sizes was observed during "burst" transformations, and these signals were neither a linear function of the size of martensite plates nor of the volume fraction transformed. Even the smallest signals, presumably from single plates, showed complications resulting from elastic and/or plastic deformation, shock wave propagation, and so forth, which are inherent in the growth process of a martensite plate. The time of formation and interface velocity determined froni this experiment agree very well with the pioneering work of Bunshalz and Mehl.&apos; AN Fe-30 at. pct Ni (c0.005 pct C) alloy was used to study the time of formation of martensite plates. Martensitic transformations, unlike the nucleation and growth processes, are usually characterized by an extremely fast reaction rate. During the transformation, the crystal structure changes and this change is propagated through a finite volume of the parent crystal lattice within a very short time interval. The interface between the two phases probably consists of moving dislocations, and the time of formation of the plate depends on how fast this dislocation interface can move. Knapp and Dehlin~er or Cottrell and Bilby mechanisms, or similar dislocation models, can be used to calculate the time of formation of a martensite plate of a given size. In the past, conventional photographic technique475 as well as electrical resistivity techniques"~-" have been used to measure the time of formation of a martensite plate. The specific resistance of the martensitic phase in Fe-30 at. pct Ni alloy is lower than that of the austenite phase. Therefore if a current is passed through a small austenite sample in series with a large external resistance, then one would observe a voltage change across the sample as martensite is formed. Such dc measurements are shown in Fig. 1. The initial large voltage drop in Fig. 1, at the M, temperature, is due to a "burst" transformation where a large number of plates are formed in a cataclysmic manner within a very short interval of time. Even during the later stages of transformation as shown in Fig. 1, one can observe discontinuous voltage changes due to small bursts. In order to resolve the time scale of such discontinuous stages, the voltage signals are amplified and fed into a highspeed oscilloscope. In this investigation a low-noise amplifier was used for the first stage of amplification. The signal to noise ratio was further improved by the design of a pulse transformer. This transformer was capable of amplifying the signal by a factor of six. Voltage signals were studied over a wide time scale ranging from 2 sec to 0.1 psec. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Specimen Preparation. Specimens were cut from induction-melted Fe-30 at. pct Ni (<0.005C) alloy and cold-rolled to 0.2 by 1 mm cross section and an average length of 5 cm. During mechanical shaping, the specimens were strain-annealed at 950°C for 24 hr in vacuum. Finally the finished samples were vacuum-annealed at 1000°C for 6 hr and water-quenched to room temperature. The average grain diameter was 0.02 cm. B) Cooling System. The M, temperature of the alloy was -55°C. Fig. 2 shows the arrangement which was used to cool the specimen at a slow rate. The specimens were mounted inside a i -in.-diam hole in the 2-in.-long section of the copper specimen holder. This cavity was filled with silica gel. THEORY HYDRAULIC classification as explained by Rittinger and others was largely restricted to conditions wherein the free-falling velocities of the particles were conceived as governing the separations effected (see chapter 9). Cone-shaped vessels or vessels of other shapes that allow the use of different velocities of current at different points in the flow are used to modify this limitation.

Helium has probably aroused more varied scientific curiosity than any other single element. Discovered by spectroscopic examination of the sun during an eclipse in 1868, helium is now known to exist not only in the sun and other stars but on earth occluded in minerals, accumulated with natural gases in pockets in the earth&apos;s crust, and in the atmosphere surrounding the earth. Astronomers study its presence in the various stars of the universe for clues to their origin and history. Geochemists and geologists study its occurrences in rocks, minerals, and meteorites to determine the age of the earth and the manner of its formation. Pathologists study its effect on living tissues in search for the ideal combination with oxygen for artificial breathing mixtures in medicine, diving operations, and space vehicles. Chemists study its physical properties and use it to trace the sequence of events in reactions in which it does not participate. Geneticists and bacteriologists use it for special studies. Physicists study its behavior when liquefied and the behavior of materials cooled to nearly absolute zero by its use. Nuclear physicists learn more about the universe through study of the nuclear reactions that produce it. Through study of helium and greater knowledge of its origin and properties, science continues to unlock some of nature&apos;s more closely guarded secrets. Unknown on earth before 1895, and not discovered as a minor constituent of natural gas until 1905, helium with its simple atomic structure--a nucleus with two electrons orbiting in a closed shell--is a unique element. It is next to the lightest gas, only hydrogen is lighter. It occupies position number 2 in the Periodic Table of the Elements and heads the list of so-called "rare" or ?noble? gases. Most of the naturally occurring helium has an atomic mass of 4.003874 (oxygen = 16). A trace (1.7 x 10-5 mol percent) is the light isotope helium-3 whose atomic mass is 3.0169800 Unstable isotopes of mass numbers 5 and 6 have been authenticated. Isotopes of mass numbers 7 and 8 have been reported, but their existence is less well established. All the heavier isotopes are radioactive and are the product of nuclear reactions.

"In recent years with increasing concerns about energy consumption in hydrometallurgical processing, there is an ongoing attempt to use Catalytic Titanium Anodes (CTAs) for copper electrowinning. For this work, anodes with IrO2 - Ta2O5 coatings were prepared in the laboratory with the same total coating loading but varying the number of layers by changing the speed of withdrawal in dip coating. A second set of CTAs were fabricated on niobium, Ti Grade 1, Ti Grade 7 and Ti Grade 36 metal substrates. All the anodes prepared in the laboratory were characterized using standard electrochemical techniques and subjected to accelerated life testing. It was found that the coating would not adhere to the niobium substrate, the grade of titanium had a minimal to no effect on the life of the anode, and it is observed that as the coating speed slows, there is an increase in the electrochemically active surface area of the coating which seems to directly contribute to an increase in the Tafel slope of the anodes. There was inconclusive evidence on the effect of coating speed on anode lifetime.INTRODUCTIONLarge scale hydrometallurgical extraction of copper has become widely practiced over the last 40+ years. The hydrometallurgical route entails leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning. With the increasing desire to process refractory sulphides like enargite and chalcopyrite through the hydrometallurgical route, use of hydro-processing of copper is expected to remain high.In conventional electrowinning, copper is deposited on the cathode and an inert anode is used for oxygen evolution. Presently, the most common anode material is rolled lead-calcium-tin and the cathode is 316L stainless steel (Robinson et al., 2013). This lead alloy is fairly inexpensive and is robust, providing lifetimes typically of 4+ years. The main drawbacks of lead alloys are their relatively high oxygen evolution overpotential, the need for cobalt in the electrolyte to reduce their corrosion, the contamination of cathode product by lead, and the generation of harzardous by-products (Hiskey, 1999)."

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), with the assistance of cooperating underground mining operations and state agencies, has conducted research exploring devices and technologies that could be used to assist miners navigating through smoke and dust resulting from a fire or explosion. Recent events in mines confirm that smoke and dust can enter and contaminate mine escapeways, creating an atmosphere with severely reduced visibility. This reduced visibility results in substantially increased escape times, possible disorientation or confusion, and increased stress levels, and may prevent evacuation altogether. Tools or devices that assist miners in navigating through smoke-filled areas void of lifelines could make the difference in successful escape from the mine. This paper presents the results of OMSHR research to identify and evaluate tools and devices that could provide meaningful information to evacuating miners in areas with limited visibility and without the benefit of a lifeline.

The reaction between manganese dioxide and molybdenite in a water- sulfuric acid medium was studied at atmospheric pressure and from 25° to 103°C. Both solids are dissolved to give, as final products in solution, Mo(VI), S(VI), and Mn(II). Stoichiornetric relationshifis are most simply represented by the equation MoSz + YMnO2 + 15H+ - HMoO-4 + 2HSO-4 + 9Mn++ + 6H20 The rate of this reaction was found to be dependent on temperature, manganese sulfate concentration, acid concentration, and, in a complex way, the surface areas of both manganese dioxide and molybdenite. Both the total amount of manganese dioxide and tnolybdenite and the ratio of manganese dioxide to molybdenite played a part in determining the over-all rate of the reaction. The effect of acid concentration on the rate was also dependent on the ratio of manganese dioxide to molybdenite. SEVERAL reports in the literature describe reactions using manganese dioxide in water-sulfuric acid media as an oxidizing agent. Nearly all previous work describes interactions between an ion and manganese dioxide, such as the oxidation of ferrous to ferric iron,&apos; or the interaction between a molecule in solution and manganese dioxide, such as the oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde.2 Only a few references describe the use of solid manganese dioxide to oxidize another solid in sulfuric acid. One report3 states, "Manganese dioxide in dilute sulfuric acid solutions had no beneficial effect (in leaching copper from chalcopyrite), but in more concentrated acid solutions the rate of solution was about the same as that for permanganate." In 1902 a German patent4 described a process which used manganese dioxide in strong (50°Be&apos;) sulfuric acid for oxidizing chromite ores to soluble iron and chromium salts. The process consisted of mixing the sulfuric acid with the finely ground ore and manganese dioxide. The pulp was then heated to about 120°C and an electric current passed through it. The manganese dioxide apparently dissolved in the strong, hot acid solution, oxidized the iron and chromium and itself was reduced to manganese 11! then was oxidized at the anode back to manganese dioxide, and the cycle repeated. An extensive study5 of the kinetics of the oxidation of pyrite with manganese dioxide indicated that in dilute sulfuric acid solutions (about 0.1 N) and at elevated pressures the dissolution of the pyrite was brought about by air oxidation of the iron to ferrous sulfate, followed by manganese dioxide oxidation of the ferrous sulfate to ferric sulfate. The mechanism proposed by the authors involved the oxidation of the iron at the surface of the manganese dioxide. Also! the oxidation of sulfide sulfur to sulfate was credited to the oxygen in the air, not to the manganese dioxide. "Current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) risk models and asbestos fiber counting techniques for monitoring airborne exposures treat all fibers as being equivalent and ignore the effect of dimension on toxicity. While this may have been appropriate when modern analytical methods were not available, the measurement world is now fully capable of making the appropriate distinctions. The importance of width as a determinant of carcinogenicity has been recognized for nearly 30 years within the published literature. Stanton,1 in a landmark study of a suite of fibrous materials, found that durable mineral fibers with widths less than 0.25 mm and lengths longer than 8 mm were causally associated with the induction of tumors. Pott,2 in a later study, postulated a fiber toxicity model that agreed reasonably well with the Stanton findings, but extended the concept to include varying toxicity as a function of length and width. Wylie et al.3 reanalyzed samples used by Davis et al.4 and found that tumor generation was strongly and inversely correlated with fiber width. Crump5 testified increasing fiber length was correlated with disease occurrence. Lippman6 reviewed a number of studies and suggested that mesothelioma was closely associated with long, thin fibers. Berman et al.7 published a risk model, which found that disease was correlated almost exclusively with fibers longer than 40 mm and width less than 0.25 mm. Recently, Loomis et al.8 reanalyzed textile mill samples and found that aspect ratios greater than 40:1 were highly correlated with disease. Incorporation of width into risk models has been limited by the availability of data from operating asbestos plants and, in particular, the observation of an asbestos plant for which there is no observable mesothelioma. There have been only limited studies published on the dimensions of asbestos fibers, with a few serving as the primary references in other literature.9_13 A rare opportunity to collect detailed concentration and dimensional data of airborne crocidolite from an operating asbestos-cement plant using modern analytical procedures arose, providing a chance to supplement the existing literature on airborne fiber dimensions. The asbestos-cement plant is located in the eastern end of Cochabamba, Bolivia along Highway 4. Cochabamba is a relatively large city located in the Andes Mountains, approximately 250 km southeast of the capital La Paz. The city sits in a valley that runs east-west with mountains to the north and south. The crocidolite used in the products made at this facility is mined in central Bolivia, approximately 75 km northwest of Santa Cruz. The crocidolite is a fibrous magnesioriebeckite 14 (blue asbestos). Crocidolite fibers from Bolivia were the subject of prior reports suggesting the fibers are generally longer and thicker than crocidolite from Australia or South Africa.9 At the cement plant, the run-of-mine crocidolite was first pulverized using a hammer mill and then sieved on vibratory sieves to produce fibers of limited size ranges for use in the cement. The sieved crocidolite is mixed with other components, including recycled cement product, to produce a slurry that is vacuum filtered into sheet form. The sheets are then manually molded into a corrugated shape, air dried, and sawed (using circular saws) to accepted dimensions. The sawed sheets are cured in soaking pits for 28 days before being shipped to the consumer. Prior to shipping, the sheets are finished by a light hand sanding followed (at customer request) by applying one or more coats of paint. A detailed description of the cement plant and the industrial hygiene results can be found in Van Orden et al.15"

O conhecimento das características microestruturais de materiais utilizados como constituintes mássicos de cerâmica vermelha é de grande importância para a compreensão das propriedades das peças queimadas. Assim, este estudo tem por objetivo caracterizar microestruturalmente a escória granulada de aciaria proveniente de uma siderúrgica do estado do Pará visando a sua incorporação em argilas para produção de peças de cerâmica vermelha. O resíduo passou pela etapa de beneficiamento e, depois, foi realizada a difração de raios-X (DRX) e fluorescência de raios-X (FRX). Além disso, realizou-se também a análise morfológica por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os resultados mostraram que hematita, magnetita e wustita são as fases predominantes associadas aos óxidos de ferro. A análise química por FRX mostrou que o resíduo apresenta baixos teores de sílica (SiO2) e alumina (Al2O3), associados a elevados teores de óxidos de ferro e óxido de magnésio. Dessa forma, a caracterização da escória granulada de aciaria mostrou que esse resíduo apresenta-se como um potencial constituinte mássico cerâmico podendo contribuir para a formação de fase liquida durante o que acarretaria em melhoria das propriedades tecnológicas como absorção de água e resistência mecânica.

Deformation (a) and twin (a&apos;) stacking-fault densities in cold - wor ked filings of fcc silver alloys containing 2, 4, and 6 wt pct Sb have been estimated from Debye-Scherrer peak shifts and asymmetries, respectively. Evidence has been obtained for a possible strain-induced transformation in a two-phase alloy containing 9.0 zut pct Sb. Using Fourier analysis of X-ray line profiles, the effective particle sizes and root mean square strains have been determined for the three fcc alloys in the cold-worked condition. The values of the compound fault probability 0.5a + a&apos;) evaluated from peak shifts and asymmetries are in reasonable apeement with those derived from peak broadening. COLD work of fcc metals may produce both deformation and twin (also called growth) stacking faults, which can be detected and quantitatively estimated by X-ray diffraction techniques.&apos; In addition to peak broadening, deformation faults produce a shift in peak positions and twin faults an asymmetry of the Debye-Scherrer reflections. Besides stacking faults, a reduction in the size of coherently diffracting domains and distortion within these also broaden the powder reflections of deformed fcc metals and alloys. Fourier analysis&apos; of peak shapes provides quantitative infor- mation about the effective domain sizes, lattice strains, and also the compound fault probability (1.5a + a&apos;), where a and a&apos; represent deformation-and growth-fault density, respectively. The Paterson method2 for determination of a from peak shifts, the warren3 or wagner4 method for evaluation of a&apos; from peak asymmetries, and the Fourier analysis for quantitative estimates of all the contributory causes of peak broadening have, in the course of the last decade, been extensively applied to obtain data for a number of deformed fcc metals and alloys. One of the useful results of earlier measurements of a in several solid solutions is a correlation between a and the solute valence as well as electron concentration per atom (p) in alloy systems based on a particular solvent. The work of Smallman and westmacott5 on Cu-Zn, Cu-A1, and Cu-Sn, of Foley, Cahn, and ~aynor&apos; on Cu-Si and Cu-Ge, and of Rama Rao and Anantharaman7 on Cu-Si and Cu-Sb has revealed a common trend in the increase of a with p and also a with valency of the solute. Cahn and Davies&apos; and Ad-ler and wagnerg have observed similar trends for silver alloys containing cadmium, indium, and tin. Data on a for silver alloys with a pentavalent solute element are not, however, available. It is primarily to fill this need that the present investigation on Ag-Sb alloys was undertaken. Utilizing the Patersonand Warren methods, values of a and a&apos;, respectively, have been determined in three silver alloys containing 2, 4, and 6 wt pct Sb. By Fourier analysis of the broadening of Debye-Scherrer peaks, effective particle sizes, lattice strains, and the compound fault probability (1.5a +a&apos;) have also been evaluated.

Many investigations have been made concerning the nature of plastic deformation and recrystallization of metals either in the form of polycrystalline materials or in the form of single crystals. However, similar work on strip materials composed of large grains as thick as the strip and having a high degree of preferred crystal oricntation has not been carried out extensively. Such materials are ideal not only for studying changes in single crystals under conditions where neighboring grains exert their influences but also for obtaining the complete change in orientation of a grain or group of grains during the course of plastic deformation and subsequent recrystallization. It is well known that first-order twins in the form of Neumann bands may be produced during the plastic deformation of ferrite crystals, particularly silicon ferrite crystals.l--3 Furthermore, it is believed that high-stress regions exist in the vicinity of these bands4. and it has been said that these banded regions would be active in recrystallization processes.5 Evidence to that effect in silicon ferrite had already been presented with photomicrographs showing recrystallization among Neumann bands during the early stages of recrystallizati~n.5,6 Similar evidence has been published for nonferrous metals5 Merging of fine parallel deformation bands during annealing to form twin bands of ordinary appearance in alpha brass has been offered not only as evidence of an active role being played by mechanical twins but also as evidence that such twins cxisted prior to recrystalli~ation.5 Proof that such new structures are actually first-order twins, or even twins at all, must be considered inadequate except for those cases where X-ray or optical data have been obtained to confirm the necessary oricntation relationship.7,8 A. B. Greninger has obtained excellent iliustrations of annealing twins in alpha iron.9 Since his material was previously deformed by sharp hammering, a process that generally induces Neumann bands, the existence of twins following annealing might suggest that they grew from mechanical twins. In connection with transformation twins in alpha iron, Greninger reported that grains containing three twin orientations occurred rarely and none occurred with three sets of well-developed bands.9 The work at the Pittsfield Works Laboratory on silicon ferrite in the form of large-grained strip steel deformed a small amount and annealed to partially recrystallize the grains indicates that the deformation and recrystallization processes that lead to annealing twins involvc more complex processes than the formation of Neumann bands and the growth of such bands. Some groups of annealing twins are obtained which contain not only three well-developed twin structures, but also contain more than one order of twins. It is also shown, in one case, that an interrelated group of twins did not arise within one single parent grain and, furthermore, orientations of grains in the group

It is well known that first-order twins in the form of Neumann bands may be produced during the plastic deformation of ferrite crystals, particularly silicon ferrite crystals.l--3 Furthermore, it is believed that high-stress regions exist in the vicinity of these bands4. and it has been said that these banded regions would be active in recrystallization processes.5 Evidence to that effect in silicon ferrite had already been presented with photomicrographs showing recrystallization among Neumann bands during the early stages of recrystallizati~n.5,6 Similar evidence has been published for nonferrous metals5 Merging of fine parallel deformation bands during annealing to form twin bands of ordinary appearance in alpha brass has been offered not only as evidence of an active role being played by mechanical twins but also as evidence that such twins cxisted prior to recrystalli~ation.5 Proof that such new structures are actually first-order twins, or even twins at all, must be considered inadequate except for those cases where X-ray or optical data have been obtained to confirm the necessary oricntation relationship.7,8 A. B. Greninger has obtained excellent iliustrations of annealing twins in alpha iron.9 Since his material was previously deformed by sharp hammering, a process that generally induces Neumann bands, the existence of twins following annealing might suggest that they grew from mechanical twins. In connection with transformation twins in alpha iron, Greninger reported that grains containing three twin orientations occurred rarely and none occurred with three sets of well-developed bands.9 The work at the Pittsfield Works Laboratory on silicon ferrite in the form of large-grained strip steel deformed a small amount and annealed to partially recrystallize the grains indicates that the deformation and recrystallization processes that lead to annealing twins involvc more complex processes than the formation of Neumann bands and the growth of such bands. Some groups of annealing twins are obtained which contain not only three well-developed twin structures, but also contain more than one order of twins. It is also shown, in one case, that an interrelated group of twins did not arise within one single parent grain and, furthermore, orientations of grains in the group

In underground mining and tunneling, machine design is predominantly dictated by mine conditions and individual customer desires. In partnership with Australian companies WDS Limited and Cram Fluid Power, the engineering department of J.H. Fletcher & Company was tasked to design and manufacture roof bolting modules to be mounted off both sides of a roadheader, providing in-cycle bolting. The objective was to produce a boom and bolt module that would allow an operator to bolt from a remote location, eliminating the need for miner to work in unsupported ground. The bolt module needed to operate in front of the cutting boom, but retract to a parked position out of the way during the cutting cycle. Due to Australian electrical approval requirements, it was desirable to design the module with minimal use of electrical controls. The need for multiple, complex, drill steel and bolt handling steps led to the need for a custom hydraulics package to automate several of the movements. The result of the design is dual drill and bolt modules mounted to a multistage boom with over 24 feet (7.31 m) of extension. Each unit rotates and tilts to meet the bolt pattern requirements in conjunction with the stow and load requirements. The bolt module builds on previous designs incorporating a modular assembly with each sub-component designed to be replaceable and adjustable independently from other machine components. Each major component is painted a different color to help the operator make the connection visually from the module to the operator?s control valves. Hydraulic package valves were designed to automatically control several of the sub-components during the drill cycle, reducing the number of steps a drill operator would, otherwise, have to do manually. This design removes the operator from working in unsupported roof and away from other inherent hazards, putting them at a safe distance on the operator?s platform. The cutting and bolting equipment has been combined into one machine, which is advantageous in single entry drifts because there is no need to place change equipment. The hydraulic package valves eliminate the need for any electronics, thus avoiding any electrical regulations with respect to the controls. The addition of these modules to the roadheading machine increases miner safety and streamlines production while meeting the ground control support requirements.

Narrow vein underground stope design engineers in Australia have expressed significant interest in the requirements and methodology for developing site-specific stability charts. This is largely due to a concern that existing stope stability charts inadequately take into account factors influencing narrow vein stope stability, such as the effect of backfill abutments and the effect of in stope pillars. This paper presents conclusions from a comprehensive statistical examination of case history requirements for a site specific stability chart and critiques literature arguments for site-specific charts. A new statistical analysis technique and a large comprehensive stability database enabled the authors to quantify case history requirements and any site-specific effects the model exhibits. The analyses indicated that a reliable stable-failure boundary requires at least 150 case histories, of which a minimum of 10 percent should be unstable stope surfaces. Marginal site-specific effects were observed for the operating conditions captured within the database. The authors conclude that the apparent site-specific effects noted in previous literature are attributable to operating conditions inadequately represented in the database. Such operating conditions could induce erroneous stability predictions at any site, and are therefore not truly site-specific. Following from these conclusions, a strategy for taking into account operating conditions particularly relevant to narrow vein mining has been proposed. In particular, the development of a chart that accounts for the effect of backfill abutments on stope stability. Backfill abutment effects are particularly relevant to mechanised narrow vein mining methods such as modified Avoca. Collaboration from at least five sites is required to obtain access to relevant data and underground drives for geotechnical mapping. Preliminary estimations indicate that approximately three months fieldwork is required to meet case history requirements. CMS data in conjunction with 3-dimensional design software will be used to calculate equivalent linear overbreak/slough (ELOS). In contrast to stable, failure, major failure and caving categorical variables, ELOS is an objective and continuous stability variable and is therefore, more conducive to mathematical modelling.

The Morobe Goldfield in Papua New Guinea has produced in excess of 120 tonnes of gold from predominantly alluvial sources. Hardrock gold has been mined historically at Wau (23t) and Edie Creek (40 and geological resources have been established at Hidden Valley (780, Kerimenge (360 and Hamata (30t). Numerous prospects have also been identified within the goldfield. Primary gold mineralisation is related to intrusion of dacitic to andesitic Edie Porphyry (2.4 to 3.8 Ma), often with associated diatremes, which have intruded along major regional structures. A full spectrum of deposit styles from proximal (mesothermal) to distal (epithermal) to the porphyry source is recognised. The transition between the proximal and distal styles is recognised both between deposits and within an individual deposit. The deposit styles should be termed porphyry related gold mineralisation rather than given the generic epithermal and mesothermal labels.

UNLESS present in considerable proportion, metals of the precious-metal group-other than gold and silver-are not readily detected by the methods of fire assaying usually applied to ores and metallurgical products. Platinum, when present in small quantity, will ordinarily be reported as silver unless special methods of parting are used. Other elements occurring in the gold itself are all fluxed and slagged in the assay operation and if analyses are made on bullions the melting and slagging operations to which the bullion has been subjected may eliminate most of the associated elements. On the other hand, the analysis of precipi-tate from the cyanide treatment of gold ores may reveal the presence of many unexpected elements, such as tungsten and molybdenum. It is uncertain, however, whether many of the elements present in the pre-cipitate are derived from the ore gangue or from the gold itself. No very general survey of the distribution of metallic elements in gold seems to have been made. Rose and Newman,1 in connection with the composition of native gold, say in part as follows: Gold is occasionally found alloyed with copper and sometimes also with iron, bis-muth, lead, mercury, tin, antimony, palladium or rhodium. Rhodium gold from Mexico was found to be of the specific gravity 15.5 to 16.8 and contained 34 to 43 per cent of rhodium. The native alloy of palladium, gold, and silver from Porpez con-tains 85.98 per cent of gold, 9.85 per cent palladium and 4.17 per cent silver. Mal-donite, from Victoria, contains gold 64.5 per cent, bismuth 35.5 per cent (Louis). Dana&apos; says that native gold is usually alloyed with silver in varying amounts, and that sometimes it also contains traces of copper and iron. Rare varieties contain palladium, rhodium and bismuth. Other authors, for instance Zeigler3 and Clark,4 give similar information. Most refer-ences on the subject agree that ordinary native golds contain, in common, the elements silver, copper and iron. After completion of the work of which this paper is a record, the conclusion is reached that all ordinary native gold probably does contain these elements and, although in certain cases other elements may be found to be present, that it is difficult to

"In this study, design and investigation of biogas digester consisting of methane tank with built-in solar collector to utilize solar energy for the heating of the slurry prepared from the dung and heat exchanger is designed, developed and tested. The digester was laboratory type and consists of cylindrical metallic tank of size of 0.5 m in diameter; 1 m in height and 200 liters in volume. The surface of the digester from outside was covered by thermo insulated material a glass wool, except of south side (in northern hemisphere). This side played the role of built-in collector and was blackened to increase absorption of solar irradiation and covered under 45o by glass. In the blackened side of the digester on the different heights it was installed metallic pipes for the inlet and outlet of the air, connected with heat exchanger installed inside of the digester. The heat exchanger was fixed in the level above of the inlet pipe. The horizontal plane reflector concentrates solar beams to blackened side of the digester. In the winter period, it was found that the retention time of this digester is shorter on 15% and produced biogas volume is larger on 20% with respect of ordinary biogas digester. This digester is used for the demonstrative purposes and as a teaching aid presently and base on the results it may be used for the construction of large volume digesters for use in the farms, especially located in the remote and mountain areas where the climate in the winter period is cold. Introduction At present many experts around the world have focused their efforts to energy crises because energy is one of the most important factors for the development of the society. It is known that consuming energy is proportional to quality or standard of life. There is a close relationship between energy consumption and the Gross National Product (GNP). It is obvious that for further development of the country additional sources of energy is required, which are cheap, safe and environmentally compatible with respect to the action on possible wastes. Utilization of renewable energy is one route to help in solving the above mentioned problems. In particular, biogas as a source of renewable energy is produced by biotechnology and used wide on residential scale [1]. The biogas was produced for the very first time in 1814 by Deivy from organic wastes. In 1900 production of biogas was started in Bombay (India) [2, 3]. Biogas consists of 55-70% methane (CH4) and around of 27-44% carbon dioxide (CO2) and less than 1% H2 and H2S. At present biogas is used widely in some countries for lighting, machines, and vehicles, generators, cooking and heating. Biogas generation is suitable for small to large scale operation and at present is realized in a number of developed and developing countries as USA, Hungary, China, India etc. Since 1990s biogas projects construction in China has developed steadily by the end of 1998, there were altogether 6.88 million household biogas digesters [4]. In Russia biogas digesters are used for processing of hard dung into biogas [5]. Over the last few years the very first biogas digesters were constructed in Tajikistan as well [6,7] and it was found that the digesters can work with sufficiently high efficiency in mountain areas as well ."

IN earlier work the effect of manganese on the general behavior of nitrogen in iron was the subject of a careful examination by Fast.&apos; Part of the investigation was made, in collaboration with one of the present authors (L.J.D.), by using the internal friction method. This technique, which has been described elsewhere,&apos; showed some significant changes in the properties of Fe-N alloys by the addition of a small amount of manganese namely: 1—Under standard conditions the maximum of the nitrogen peak in pure iron appears around 20 °C and the half width is about 27 °C. By addition of 0.5 atomic pct Mn a general broadening of the internal friction peak occurs. The half width is increased by about 9°C. Moreover, a shift of the maximum of about 5°C toward a higher temperature takes place, Fig. 2. 2—The precipitation of nitrogen from the supersaturated solution, measured, e.g., at 200 °C, was inhibited by the addition of the amount of manganese given in effect 1. The broadening of the nitrogen peak was confirmed in more recent work3 on samples which were prepared from Westinghouse Puron iron. The effect of manganese on the rate of precipitation, however, was much less striking than in the earlier work&apos; based on Philips high purity iron. Theory To explain the first change in properties just referred to, effect 1, the following two assumptions were made:&apos; First, every manganese atom in sub-stitutional solid solution creates around it six interstices located between an iron and a manganese atom, as is evident from Fig. 1. These interstices, conveniently called Fe-Mn interstices, have for nitrogen a free energy level which is AG* lower than the normal Fe-Fe interstices between two iron atoms. For such low concentrations of manganese as 0.5 atomic pct, the possibility that two manganese atoms will be nearest neighbors can be disregarded. Second, it is assumed that in addition to the normal relaxation time TFe at least one new relaxation time, Mn, Fe, enters in the phenomena which is associated with the elementary diffusion jumps between a Fe-Mn interstice and an adjacent Fe-Fe interstice. Fig. 1 gives schematically the free energy for a nitrogen atom as a function of its position along the line ABC. A tentative analysis of the nitrogen peak in a 0.5 pct Fe-Mn alloy based on these assumptions has been made in Fig. 2. The dotted curve with a maximum at 22°C is caused by jumps between Fe-Fe interstices, the dotted curve with maximum at 32°C by jumps between an Fe-Mn and an Fe-Fe interstice. The two effects added together give the dash-dot internal friction curve for the alloy. In the following these two components will be referred to as the normal peak at 22°C and the abnormal one. Culver, Colorado School of Mines I appreciated Professor Starfield&apos;s presentation, because his approach to blasting research reflects my feelings that a lot of practical work can be done toward making short-term advances that can be used by the blasting industry. We should not forget this in our attempt to obtain solutions to such idealized problems as a mathematical theory of cratering. The blasting industry would like very much to have the efficiency of the basic blasting processes improved from the range of 20 percent up into the range of 50 percent. And many of these problems should be approached and attacked in the laboratories. Blasting research at the Colorado School of Mines for the past two or three years has been aimed at improving the pre-splitting process, because we feel it will become increasingly important to the construction industry. We have attempted to develop a unified theory of how pre-splitting works; and the more we investigate, the more variables we find. We may never obtain an entirely satisfactory theory of pre-splitting, but we have developed a tentative explanation. One of our first conclusions was that we are making very poor use of the explosive in current pre-splitting practice. But to appreciate this we must first consider how pre-splitting works. A series of parallel boreholes are loaded with low density charges which are detonated simultaneously. (Delayed detonation has been tried, but most people agree that simultaneous detonation is best, and this is what we found.) Stress waves traveling out from each borehole interact with the stress waves from the two adjacent boreholes influencing the direction of the fractures that occur and propagate from each borehole. It has been suggested in private communication with Mr. Wilbur Duvall of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, that the fracture between the adjacent boreholes is a result of the net particle velocities above and below the pre-split plane which tend to set up a net tension along the pre-split plane. Regardless of what the exact mechanism is that causes the fracture to propagate from one borehole to the next, we know that it, in general, relies upon an interaction of the stress waves. However, if there is a large compressive stress normal to the pre-split place, it can practically eliminate any possibility of obtaining the desired pre-split by preventing the desired fractures from getting started. Aside from obtaining a fracture along the pre-split plane, the other major aim of pre-splitting is to minimize the fracturing that occurs around the borehole. We do this by drilling a large hole and putting a small charge in the middle of it. This results in a badly decoupled charge which is very inefficient; most of the energy is used in compressing the air in the borehole. Out of discussions about how pre-splitting works, we decided that perhaps there was some other explosive geometry which would make more efficient use of the explosive, and result in optimizing the pre-splitting process. Starting in the laboratory with small plexiglas blocks, we found that a fully-coupled explosive charge of 5 grains/in. of PETN gave random fractures extending about I in. from the borehole. A 1/4 in. plexiglas plug fit into a 1/4 in. hole in a similar block with the same fully coupled charge gave random fractures extending out only about 1/2 in. due to the energy absorbed in fracturing the plug. If the plug was split longitudinally but otherwise using the same geometry, it was possible to drive a fracture about 2 in. in either direction from the borehole, with an even smaller amount of fracturing around the borehole.
