Compressed air distribution networks are essential for powering equipment in many mines even though some mines are replacing them with electrical power for hydraulic drills. Compressed air can be costly especially if the system is poorly designed and maintained. This paper outlines a technique for proper compressed air system design that will help mine managers reduce compressed air power costs; an important topic in today's highly competitive international minerals market. Compressed air system design is complex. It requires specifying: 1) air quantity and pressure in all branches of a large network, 2) proper location and types of valves and fittings, 3) the network solution that determines compressor requirements, 4) optimal hose and pipe, diameters, 5) receiver and compressor accessories, and 6) required capital and operating costs.

Gas outbursts occur as sudden eruptions of gas and minerals from the face of a mine heading as the heading approaches potentially burst prone (or anomalous) zones of rock. Such outbursts have resulted in considerable damage to equipment, and in some cases lives have been lost. Characterizing these anomalous zones and detecting their presence is therefore vital to safe mining. Certain significant characteristics associated with the outburst-prone zones are: (1) the presence of fluid inclusions, (2) unstable stress conditions, (3) characteristic geologic structures, (4) certain physical properties of the rock, and (5) microseismic activity. Geophysical and engineering methods for detecting these characteristics are discussed and are considered with respect to their past success and future potential for predicting gas outbursts.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small-scale continuous tests of kyanite ore from Georgia to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial-grade kyanite concentrates by flotation. The research indicated that combinations of sulfuric acid and petroleum sulfonate may be used effectively for flotation of kyanite from quartzite-kyanite ore. Over 87 percent of the kyanite was recovered in a concentrate analyzing 55.8 percent A1203 and 5.3 percent acid-soluble Fe203. Subsequent treatment of the flotation concentrate by high-intensity wet magnetic separation reduced the acid-soluble Fe203 to 0.8 percent and increased the alumina content to 57.6 percent, with a recovery of 82.7 percent of the total alumina in the ore.

A variety of approaches have been used in the recent literature for the estimation of pre-mining (or natural background) metal concentrations in areas affected by mining. The following is a list of some of these approaches: (1) historical and anecdotal data, (2) remote analogues (other similarly mineralized areas), (3) proximal analogues (nearby mineralized areas), (4) sediment sampling (streambeds, lakes, estuaries, floodplain deposits, and soil profiles), (5) stable isotopes (hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and carbon), (6) geochemical modeling (forward, equilibrium-based), (7) geochemical modeling (forward, kinetic- and transport-based, and inverse), (8) statistical analyses, (9) mass balance on oxygen flux, (10) mass balance with age determination of weathered material. Examples of each approach are described, and the strengths and limitations of each approach are discussed.

Concentrate flow rates were measured for the flotation of -100-mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer-controlled 0.076 x 3.5-m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height, airflow and solid feed rates. The specific projected surface areas of the feed, concentrate and tailing streams were determined from the measured particle size distributions. The results obtained show that the concen¬trate flow rate was independent of recovery zone height but was dependent on the hydrostatic pressure setting (measure of froth depth), gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of bubble surface area flux and the specific particle projected surface area.

Geoenvironmental models are compilations of geologic, geochemical, and hydrologic information that describe both the pre- and post-mining environmental signatures of mineral deposits. The environmental behavior of seafloor massive sulfide deposits varies according to deposit type. This study has divided massive sulfide deposits into six categories: (1) Noranda-type, (2) Kuroko-type, (3) Cyprus- type, (4) Bathurst-type, (5) Besshi-type, and (6) sedimentary-exhalative deposits. In addition to Fe and Al, the heavy metals most commonly associated with drainage from these deposits are Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and As. Metal ratios of mine drainage and natural background waters tend to reflect the primary character of the ores. Variations in pyrite and pyrrhotite contents are reflected in lower pH values associated with pyrite-rich deposit types.

"A 2nd generation roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) design was tested by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at a Midwestern underground coal mine. During the study, the roof bolter never operated downwind of the continuous miner. Using a combination of personal Data Rams (pDR) and gravimetric samplers, the dust control efficiency of the roof bolter CAC was ascertained. Performance evaluation was determined using three methods: (1) comparing roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC to roof bolter concentrations outside the CAC, (2) comparing roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC to the concentrations at the rear of the bolter, and finally, (3) using the gravimetric data directly underneath the CAC to correct roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC and comparing them to the concentrations at the rear of the bolter. Method 1 dust control efficiencies ranged from -53.9% to 60.4%. Method 2 efficiencies ranged from -150.5% to 52.2%, and Method 3 efficiencies ranged from 40.7% to 91%. Reasons for negative and low dust control efficiencies are provided in this paper and include: incorrect sampling locations, large distance between CAC and operator, and contamination of intake air from line curtain. Low dust concentrations encountered during the testing made it difficult to discern whether differences in concentrations were due to the CAC or due to variances inherent in experimental dust measurement. However, the analyses, especially the Method 3 analysis, show that the CAC can be an effective dust control device. INTRODUCTION Canopy air curtains (CAC) have been shown to be an effective respirable coal mine dust control for roof bolters in a laboratory setting with dust control efficiencies ranging from 14% up to 75% [Goodman and Organiscak 2001, Listak and Beck 2012, Reed et al. 2017]. Unfortunately, there is limited information on their effectiveness for controlling respirable coal mine dust in the field. On continuous miners, CAC dust control efficiencies ranged from 23% to 69% [Krisko 1975]. Two underground tests of the CAC on roof bolters demonstrated dust control efficiencies of 35% and 53% [Listak and Beck 2012] before problems occurred with operation of the CAC. Since the implementation of the new respirable coal mine dust limit from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 (Code of Federal Regulations, 30 CFR 70.100, 2015), roof bolter CACs are becoming more commonplace in underground coal mines as a dust control tool to prevent roof bolter operator overexposure to respirable coal mine dust. J.H. Fletcher & Co. has been instrumental in delivering an effective design which incorporates the filter, blower, and canopy plenum seamlessly into the design of the roof bolter, resulting in a successful operational roof bolter CAC."

"A brief history of previous mining activity on Coal Mountain, near Corbin, British Columbia, is followed by a description of the steps leading up to the resumption of mining in /974 by Byron Creek Collieries. New developments, including a preparation plant, a rail spur and a totally enclosed facility, as well as operating techniques, are also discussed. IntroductionThe Corbin Mine of Byron Creek Collieries Limited is located in southeastern British Columbia, approximately 110 air miles southwest of Calgary (Fig. I), 15 miles south of Highway 3 via a newly constructed provincial road (Fig. 2). Development of the area began on July 30, 1905, when D.C. Corbin, a prominent businessman from the northwestern U.S., and his associate E.J . Robert s, first visited the site of Coal Mountain on horseback. Coal was in great demand by railways and other industrial users, so the Corbin Coal and Coke Co. , after acquiring 15,000 acres of land in the area , began to develop a mine.F.J. Roberts was responsible for the construction of the 14-mile rail spur, the Eastern British Columbia Railway, which joined the mine to the CPR main line at the McGillivray Loop. Rail access to the mine and its developing community, Corbin, B.C., was completed in September 1908, the same year that the first underground mine began production.The Corbin Coal and Coke Co. operated six mines on Coal Mountain (Fig. 3), and production from 1908 to 1930 inclusive totalled 2,337,800 tons. This production was allocated to the mines as shown in Table 1. No.3, 4 and 6 mines were operated intermittently from 1931 to 1935."

In this paper I will attempt to present an up to date review of the type of exploration' that has previously been carried out in Alaska, discuss some of the more significant past producers and recent discoveries, and suggest some approaches to future exploration. Hopefully this information may be of some use to those parties tempting to evaluate Alaska's non ferrous, non placer, metal potential or contemplating initiation of exploration in the state. II. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS Past production of non ferrous metals from lode deposits in Alaska has been meager considering the size of the state. Since there have been no major lode mines operative in Alaska since World War II, and since logistical conditions vary throughout the state, it is not possible to generalize with respect to mining costs in Alaska as compared to those in other areas. There seems to be little question, however, that a major deposit situated in a reasonably favorable location' could be profitably operating at present. Host of the known metal prospects in Alaska were discovered by early gold prospectors prior to World War I. From World War I through World War II exploration consisted chiefly of surface prospecting by prospectors on a diminished scale, as compared to the early gold rush days, drilling of some prospects by the U.S.B.M,, and occasional mine or prospect evaluations by mining companies. From the end of World War II to the present time, there has been a generally steady increase in exploration by mining companies consisting chiefly of prospect and district evaluations, large scale aerial reconnaissance programs in search of color anomalies, and regional drainage geochemical surveys. The post World War II increase in mining company exploration has not been matched by an increase in conventional surface prospecting.

"Considering the traumatic events of Canadian mining taxation of the 1970s, one wonders at the sanity of anybody who tries to predict what the 1980s might hold for the tax structure of the mining industry. Yet, the author agreed to tackle this task when called upon to do so at the annual meeting of the Quebec Metal Mining Association in June. The text of this ""daring"" speech follows.IntroductionI have been asked to play the part of the oracle at Delphi, and to predict what the 1980s might hold for the Canadian mining industry in terms of taxation. To appreciate the challenge of this difficult assignment, try to imagine someone in my position back in 1972 attempting to forecast the balance of the 1970s. I daresay that ten years ago nobody could possibly have conceived of the devastating and casualty-ridden rollercoaster ride that mining taxation actually took in the 70s. Nevertheless, I shall examine the entrails and try to shed some light on what might happen during the balance of this decade as far as mineral taxation is concerned.If one were to retreat deep into history, one would find that taxation generally served one purpose-namely, to raise revenues for the government. More recently, an important second function has emerged: taxation is increasingly being used as a fiscal tool-a tool intended to mould and shape future events in order to accomplish certain economic, social and political objectives. It is these two main forces-the need (or desire) for revenues and the perceived convenience of using taxation as a fiscal tool-which will continue to shape the tax structure of the future.In our assessment of where taxation of the mining industry may be headed, we should be able to learn something by looking at where we have been."

"As a mining engineer with over 50 years' experience in underground operations and mine planning, I appreciate the enormous amount of work that went into the paper; and despite an imbalance between geology-geostatistics and the profit-earning actions of mining and treating (possibly because of sponsorship only by the Geological Society), I agree with probably 85% of the detail. But the paper fails to build on its own sound foundations and, like many predecessors, drifts instead into idealism. Even the starting quotation from the US SEC Form S-18 is little more than a platitude. An American consultant (l) has observed: ""an evaluation that accepts ore reserves as guaranteed because their definition meets SEC criteria is an invitation to disaster"".Idealism enshrines at least two myths that have bedevilled definition over the last several decades. The first is that the only purpose of 'ore reserves' is to promise successful new mines, and that 'ore reserves' must necessarily follow feasibility studies.In practice, the identification of what is likely to be mined if a mine is started must often be done on broad economics long before the feasibility study, and there may be only little later flexibility. The second myth is that there can be a perfect deposit with a simple exploration-appraisal-development sequence (the paper's Figure 2) against which all inferiors can be matched. If the field of definition be regarded as a pyramid, the quest for perfection and the imposition of rigid promises upon the terms 'ore' and 'reserves' drive definitions so near the apex (or the bottom right corner of Figure I, if preferred) that little is left to define. The process is reminiscent of the legendary super-medicine, the one so powerful that the patient had to be in perfect health to take it!"

The ?-to-? transformation has been studied in zirconium alloys containing 22 to 70 wt pct U. In this range of compositions the ? phase can be retained by quenching. Transformation to ? occurs by a nucleation-and-growth process. The diffusion of atoms to preferred lattice sites to yield a partially ordered structure apparently controls the rate of reaction. Alpha uranium and a zirconium precipitate from the supersaturated E phase initially formed in alloys outside the equilibrium E phase composition limits. ZIRCONIUM-Uranium alloys have long been of interest for reactor-fuel applications because of the low thermal-neutron cross section of zirconium. Considerable information is available on the various properties and behavior of these alloys1 although there had been a number of areas where information was incomplete. As part of a program to provide more detailed knowledge in these areas, the presently reported investigation was undertaken. The constitutional diagram of the zirconium-uranium system is shown in Fig. 1.' The system is distinguished by a region of complete solid solubility between the body-centered cubic ß-zirconium and ? uranium phases and the existence of an intermediate phase in the vicinity of 50 wt pct U. This intermediate phase, designated as E, is reported3 to have a primitive hexagonal structure with a = 5.03 and c = 3.08A. The structure is partially ordered with zirconium atoms at the 0, 0, 0 position and zirconium and uranium atoms located randomly at the 1/3, 2/3, 1/2, and 2/3, 1/3, 1/2 positions. While the E phase may be nominally designated as of UZr2 stoichio-metry, the random distribution of uranium and zirconium atoms permit a considerable range in composition. Of interest in the research performed were alloys in the range from 20 wt pct (10 at. pct) to 70 wt pct (47 at. pct) U. In this range of compositions the body-centered-cubic ? phase can be retained either completely or partially on quenching. The nature and kinetics of transformation of the ? phase were the subject of study. Proceeding concurrently with the presently reported work was an investigation by Kearns4 which has since been reported. Kearns studied alloys containing 50 to 60 wt pct U prepared from sponge zirconium. While the work reported here is for alloys prepared from crystal-bar zirconium and the techniques of study are to some extent dissimilar to those employed by Kearns, general agreement so far as results and interpretation can be reported. Experimental Techniques—Alloys were prepared and the transformation of the ? phase studied during interrupted-quench and quench-and-temper isothermal heat treatments by means of hardness measurements and X-ray diffraction and metallographic techniques. The isothermal transformation of the ? phase on quenching and tempering was investigated further employing dynamic-modulus measurements. Electrical resistivity and limited Hall coefficient measurements were also obtained as part of the study. Alloy Preparation and Heat Treatment— Alloys containing 15, 20, 22, 30, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, and 70 wt pct U were prepared from as-reduced uranium and crystal-bar zirconium. The alloys were double arc melted by consumable-electrode are-melting techniques. The final ingots were forged and rolled at temperatures between 790" and 840oC to 1/4-in. rod and 1/8-in. sheet. [ ] Even though we have a small audience, I am sure there are some here who are interested in sponge iron. It is a large subject, with a lot of economic interest, and one that will continue to grow in importance as the years go by and as the conditions that urge action in that direction increase. The authors have chosen to deal in this paper with one particular narrow phase of a long program of work by the Bureau of Mines. Before asking for any general discussion, I would myself like to ask Mr. Buehl if he would tell us just a little bit about the mechanism of discharge and the form in which the material was discharged; that is, when dolomite is added, what happens to the dolomite? R. C. Buehl (author's reply)-You are interested in the equipment that was used? H. W. GRAHAM-No, just the product. R. C. Buehl-The product was in granular form, of a shape very similar to that of the ore used. Using minus 10-mesh ore, the product is essentially minus 10-mesh, mixed with the coal and dolomite. It is then passed through a belt type of magnetic separator, which picks up the magnetic iron and allows the dolomite and coal to fall off. If the coal is sufficiently valuable, it can be separated from the dolomite and, provided the coal has a sufficiently low ash content, it can be reused. For instance, if a low-ash reducing agent like petroleum coke is used, it can be reused until all the carbon is consumed. H. W. Graham-That clears the point for me. There was an extensive mining and industrial exploitation of Russia, about 20 years ago, by Belgian, French and British capitalists; but the results were discouraging. It is said that the Belgian and French public together lost approximately $400,000,000, chiefly in the coal and iron industry of southern Russia. This loss is largely accounted for by the fact that most of the companies were formed, as usual in " boom" times, to sell stock; and that thorough investigations were not made. I11 1906, renewed interest was taken in Russian mines, especially in those of gold and copper, and a considerable literature is growing on this subject; but as yet I have seen no account of one of the large Russian mining estates. The following notes on such property, where the conditions are so different from those in the mining regions of the United States, should be of interest: This inadequate and probably somewhat inaccurate account is made up, partly from my own notes made on the ground, in the summers of 1904 and 1905, and partly from a volume on the geology and resources of the estate issued several years ago, containing surface- and mine-maps, and from a pamphlet published in 1904, giving a general account of the condition and prospects of the property. This pamphlet includes a report made in 1899 by Arthur L. Pearse, a member of this Institute. Both these books are in Russian, and were prepared by the Bogoslovsk Mining Co., which owns and operates the property. Articles in many other languages have appeared dealing with various matters connected with the estate; but I know of no other general account of it. In numerous books and articles on the Urals and Siberia, however, localities are described in which somewhat similar conditions prevail. Recent papers by

Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen: The subject, "Shake It for Results," may or may not suggest just what is to be shaken, or just what results are to be obtained. I can assure you that if you are thinking about anything outside the realm of pure mining application you have come to the wrong meeting, and if this be the case, you have come to hear a subject discussed that I am not prepared to undertake-at the moment, at least. At the very beginning of time, results were definitely obtained by shaking. If you will recall, Eve shook a certain tree of forbidden fruit-need I recount to you the results that were, and are still, being credited to that bit of engineering? To get closer to the subject at hand, it is the intent of this paper to touch generally on the shaking, principally the vibratory shaking, of materials on a piece, or pieces, of perforated metal or screen cloth. Through the evolution of such a motion we find that great strides have been made toward a highly efficient "operation which is an essential factor in the mining world of today. The object of the shaking motion is to more efficiently separate one size material from another, according to the openings in the screening medium over which it is passed. Sizing is an important operation in every ore dressing, coal prepara¬tion or other mineral-preparing plant for reducing the product to a form more concentrated or more convenient for utilization than that in which it was mined. In coal preparation, market requirements, convenience, custom, and efficiency in combustion necessitate grading mined coal by sizes. All ore-dressing or coal preparation plants therefore must have what is called screening, sizing, or grading apparatus.

"IntroductionInhalation of crystalline silica is often associated with the development of pulmonary disease (Ziskind et al., 1976). Recently, it has been proposed that freshly sheared silica .may have surface properties that make it more reactive with lung tissue than aged silica, and that this unique reactivity ·of freshly crushed silica enhances its pathogenicity. A recent study in our laboratory strongly supports this theory (Vallyathan, et al., 1988a; 1988b). We found that grinding of silica cleaves bonds in a silica tetrahedral lattice generating reactive free radicals sites on the surface of the silica particles. The presence of surface radicals on freshly ground silica was monitored by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The ESR signal generated from fresh silica in air is characteristic of Si-0 and Si radicals. Evidence, i.e., the ESR signal after the addition of a spin trap (DMPO) and its sensitivity to ethanol, indicates that these silicon-based surface radicals can react with water to form hydroxyl radicals (OH). Results also indicate that these surface radicals make fresh silica more cytotoxic than aged silica; i.e., fresh silica causes more membrane damage as evidenced by hemolysis and lipid peroxidation. Therefore, the presence of reactive sites on the surface of freshly cleaved silica may play a significant role in its pathogenicity.If surface· free radicals are related to cytotoxicity, then screening dusts for the existence of such radicals may predict their relative pathogenicity. Since an ESR spectrometer is not available to many laboratories, the objective of this study was to develop a quick and simple technique to monitor the existence of reactive surface sites on dust. The technique chosen was the measurement of chemiluminescence using a liquid scintillation counter; i.e., an instrument which·would be accessible to most investigators."

It is general practice to evaluate the strength properties of a particular metal from its stress-strain (s1 — el) curve obtained by means of a conventional tension test. Such a stress-strain curve, Fig I, illustrates two important properties of a metal, its ability to strain harden, and its ability to withstand a certain limiting stress, the "fracture stress," (s), and a certain limiting strain, the "ductility" (es), before it fails by separation. These two fracturing characteristics are the coordinates of the point of fracture in Fig I. In the case of a metal which necks in a tension test, both the fracture stress and the ductility (measured in a tension test) are dependent upon (I) the shape of the neck and (2) average values of the stresses and strains over the cross-section at the moment of fracture. However, for the pur. pose of this investigation, these average quantities, rather than the actual values, may be considered for reasons of simplicity. It appears that the conclusiom also hold true if the analysis were carried out for actual values of fracture stress and ductility at the locos of failure. In this paper, the effects of straining (at room temperature) by various methods on the above metal characteristics, which were determined by subsequent tension tests will be discussed. According to Our present knowledge, any such prestrainitlg results in a stress-strain curve (in subsequent testing by tension), Fig 2, the general shape, or flow characteristics, of which can be derived from the original stress-strain curve of the unstrained metal minus a certain portion exhausted by the initial straining. This phenomenon is called strain hardening, and may be measured by the magnitude of the cut-off, or the "effective strain,'' from which the new curve must start in order to coincide in its plastic branch with the original stress-strain curve.
