As part of the Ship Canal Water Quality Project, 2.7-mile Combined Sewer Overflow tunnel is excavated with a 21.5-foot diameter EPB Tunnel Boring Machine. Due to the difficult geological and hydrogeological conditions, the tunnel is excavated maintaining a ground support pressure between 1 and 3 bar imposing significant challenges to the projects. The first part of the paper describes the general characteristics of the project while the second part focuses on the challenges and technical details of the pressurized breakthrough that took place in a deep shaft excavated in urban environment as part of the project.

The origin of the salt domes of the Gulf coastal plain has been investigated by many of the most able geologists, but the problem cannot be said to have been satisfactorily solved. Since 1860, numerous theories have been presented, only to be discarded, at least in part, as more complete infomation revealed their fundamental weakness. Real progress toward solution dates from 1902, when Hill1 advanced the theory of secondary deposition of the domal materials from saturated solutions of hot saline waters ascending from great depths under hydrostatic head along structural lines of weakness. Shortly thereafter, Harris,² using Hill's hypothesis as a basis, explained the doming and pronounced uplift associated with these salt cores as the result of forces exerted by growing salt crystals. This was a marked advance over the ideas of Coste3 and Hager,4 since no evidence of igneous intrusives, as they assumed to explain the uplifts, had been found associated with the domes. Harris5 developed his theory until it offered such apparently plausible explanations of so many details of dome phenomena that his hypothesis and conclusions received widespread acceptance, despite some serious objections, and today his theory, somewhat modified, is considered by many able investigators to be the best explanation of the origin of these domes. The immense production of oil per acre, the recognition of the high lubricating quality of the oil, the development and recognition of the efficiency and advantages of oil-burning vessels, with the subsequent exceptional demand for fuel oil, and the resultant advance in the price of coastal crude, have been responsible for a prospecting and develop- 1 Robert T. "Direct digital manufacturing offers promise as a technique for fabricating complex hydrogen purification membrane support structures. Free form fabrication methods can produce parts with complex structures, and sintering parameters can be controlled to adjust the density, pore structure, pore pathways and strength in catalytic substrate constructs. Efforts are underway to define the influence of selected process variables on the chemical and mechanical properties.IntroductionThe Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processes (CAMP), in collaboration with the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department at Montana Tech and the Chemistry Department at the University of Montana, is engaged in the development of new methods and materials for hydrogen purification membrane production. Because hydrogen readily passes through palladium, a structurally sound palladium-based membrane is capable of separating relatively pure hydrogen from other gases. In order for this technology to succeed, a suitable substrate material must be identified.High purity hydrogen is produced by various means. A common method involves a two-stage process for separating hydrogen from a hydrocarbon gas stream: 1) hydrogen-rich syngas is produced by the catalytic reaction of natural gas or another light hydrocarbon gas with steam, and 2) hydrogen is separated from the other syngas components by pressure swing adsorption (PSA) (US. Energy Information Agency, 2011). In PSA, gases enter a column that is packed with a material that absorbs gases as the chamber is filled and pressurized. As the pressure is slowly relieved, the absorbent material releases hydrogen at a higher pressure than the impurity gases. PSA processes produce 99.99% pure hydrogen at a high recovery rate. These systems typically demand a high capital investment due to the high pressure and multiple stages (columns) needed to attain high hydrogen production rates.Research geared toward reducing hydrogen production cost is focused on the development of improved catalysts and adsorbent materials as well as more effective single-stage separation processes. An interesting method combines hydrogen reduction catalysis and filtration. Nascent hydrogen is separated from other gases as it selectively permeates the filter. Catalyst filters may be made of gold, silver, platinum, palladium or precious metal alloys (Davis, 2009)."

The history of the many difficulties encountered by early investigators, the laboratory achievements of Lebeau3, Fichter4 and Oesterheld5, and the eventual development of methods for commercial production are well covered in the literature, particularly in the authoritative published work of Siemens and Halske6 reviewing their comprehensive investigation of the element. Accordingly it has seemed desirable to restrict this paper to the properties and uses of beryllium and its alloys.

Calcium ferrite slags are often associated with Professor Yazawa due to his pioneering work on the thermodynamics of this type of melts. Over the past years CSIRO has invested some effort in studying physico-chemical properties of such melts to fill in some gaps in our knowledge and explore opportunities for application of the understanding developed. These investigations cover thermodynamics, transport properties of calcium ferrite based slags, as well as the kinetics of reactions of such slags with refractories. The present paper provides an overview of some of these studies and highlights some of the interesting behavior of such melts. The oxidation state of copper and arsenic in calcium ferrite based slags are predominantly Cu+ and As3+, respectively, at oxygen potentials below 10.1 atm. The concentration ofCu2+ in such slags becomes significant at oxygen potentials of greater than 10'1 atm at 1300 ?C. The activities of CuOo.s and AsOl.S in calcium ferrite slags show strong deviations from the Raoultian Law, while that of CoO is very close to ideal behaviour with respect to pure solid CoO. Addition of Si02 to calcium ferrite slags can have significant effects on the activities of FeO and Fe2O3 and hence the stability of magnetite phase. Transfer of oxygen in calcium ferrite slags is fast with diffusivity of 2xlO?3 cm2/s at 1350 °C and activation energy of 16 kcal/mol Presence of solid phases, such as magnetite, has pronounced effect on the viscosity of calcium ferrite slags. The observed dependence on solid loading and shear rate indicates deviation from Newtonian behaviour. The interfacial tension between copper mattes and calcium ferrite slags is strongly dependent on the matte grade, with the determined values being much lower than the corresponding ones for interfacial tension between similar mattes and iron silicate slags. MgO, Cr2O3 and MgCr2O4 have low solubility in calcium ferrite slags and their solubility increases with increasing copper oxide content of the slag at 1300 °c. The oxidation state of the slag has strong effects on phase transformation, dissolution rate and disintegration of refractories in calcium ferrite slags. Other key factors with major impact on slag-refractory interactions include viscosity and surface tension of slags as well as the contact angle between slag and refractory material.

"A two-dimensional CAFD model was developed for simulating the solute diffusion-controlled dentritic growth in the low Peclet number regime. Mass conservation and local equilibrium at the solid/liquid interface were solved to determine the growth velocity of interface with consideration of constitutional and curvature undercooling. The modified decentered square growth proposed by Wang et al was adopted to capture the first eight neighboring cells. The comparison between the classic Lipton-Glicksman-Kurz (LGK) analytical model for steady state tip variables and the simulated values showed that the present model was capable of quantitatively determining the dendritic growth, and the simulation tests demonstrated that the effects of the mesh anisotropy in growth kinetics and crystallographic orientation were eliminated. The numerical simulations were performed to the dendritic growth ofFe-0.6%C binary alloy in undercooled melt, and the results showed that the present model could predict the dendrite morphology with artificial growth orientation in acceptable level.IntroductionDuring the solidification of metals and alloys, the dendrite grows from the substance or the undercooling melt and solute redistributes between the dendrite and the interdendritic liquid. The solidification microstructure is close related to the phase and solute evenness and has a close linkage with the properties of final production.In the past few decades, various kinds of deterministic and stochastic models have been developed to predict the evolution of microstructures in solidification, with the fast development of computer power. Among these methods, Phase Field (PF) model [1, 2] has been known as one of the most adequate deterministic models for directly simulating the dendritic growth. However, there is a vital drawback that the PF method requires considerable computation time and is limited to simulate very small domains with a few dendrites [3]. On the other hand, stochastic models, such as Monte Carlo (MC) method [4, 5] and Cellular Automaton (CA) method [6-8], have been usually applied to predict the solidification microstructure evolution. Comparing with the MC method, the dendritic growth kinetics is explicitly integrated in the CA model, while the MC model doesn't. Therefore, the CA method is more reasonable to predict the dendritic growth during the solidification of melt."

THE Balatoc mine, one of the Haussermann group,[t] is on the Island of Luzon, the largest of the Philippine group, about 260 km. north of Manila, and 12 km. from the city of Baguio. The Baguio district is the most important gold-mining area of the Philippines, with 14 producing mines in 1939, milling 2,3;8,894 tons of ore, yielding [P]40,881,048, approximately 55 per cent of the total Philippine production of [P]74,131,216. PRODUCTION HISTORY The Balatoc mine began production in January 1929 with a 150-ton cyanide mill. Increases in mill capacity have taken place as follows: March, 1932, to 350 tons June, 1933, to 470 tons December, 1933, to 515 tons July, 1934, to 700 tons December, 1934, to 1000 tons May, 1935, to 1200 tons October, 1938, to 1300 tons April, 1939, to 2000 tons January, 1941, to 2150 tons Production during the period of expansion has steadily increased in total value in spite of the fact that grade of ore milled has dropped-from $31.06 in 1929 to $5.78 in 1940. Annual reports give production as shown in Table 1, the average values being based on gold at the old price of $20.67 per ounce. [ ] GEOLOGY The ore occurs in quartz-calcite veins that vary in width from narrow stringers to mineralized zones 40 to 50 ft. wide. Wall rocks consist largely of diorites, with some andesite, and a fragmental breccia called locally the "Balatoc plug." Texture of the ore varies widely in the different veins-from a soft, highly altered, gouge material filled with quartz fragments through a soft, unaltered quartz-calcite to a hard, massive quartz ore. Three major vein systems have been extensively developed, and smaller amounts of work have been done on several others. These veins strike east-west to N. 60°, dipping south from 50° to 90°, and are essentially tension breaks between a series of faults or shears striking N. 30°E. to N. 50°E. and dipping southeast from 50°to 90°. (written discussion.*).-I fully agree with Mr. Daly's observation that there is such a coincidence between petroleum deposits and geosynclines as to suggest them to be "closely allied phenomena." However, I accept no "identity of cause." To me the explanation is a simple one. Geosynclinal deposition is the first phase in the formation of a mountain, chain, and petroliferous deposits are indeed closely allied to zones of, mountain folding. In fact, petroleum is a typical occurrence in those beds, which represent the flysch facies, to use the Swiss expression. "Composites consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol), starch and sugarcane bagasse ashes, using glycerol as plasticizer agent, were prepared by solution casting method. Composites prepared were subjected to electron-beam radiation treatments, at radiation dose of 50 and 80 kGy using a Dynamitron electron beam accelerator, at room temperature in the presence of air. The composite samples obtained were evaluated for their water absorption, mechanical and morphological properties.1. IntroductionThe potential of biodegradable polymers and more specifically of biocomposites obtained from agro-resources have long been well established [1-3]. Starch, derivate from variety of botanical sources (cereals, legumes, and tubers) is widely available raw material and one of the most studied and promising agro-resources for the production of biodegradable polymers as matrices for biocomposite applications. However, starch itself is very brittle, hydrophilic and its mechanical properties are very poor for many applications [3 - 5]. The blending of starch with conventional polymers is a promising approach to improve its drawbacks. Recently, many efforts have been made to blend starch with biodegradable synthetic polymers [5, 6]. Polyvinyl alcohol (PYA) is a particularly well-suited synthetic polymer for the formulation of blends with natural polymers, as it is highly polar and can also be manipulated in water solutions, and depending upon its grade, in functional organic solvents as well [3, 7]. PY A has been reported to be an option to blend with starch. Most of the starch/PY A composites have been prepared by casting. However, it is well known that starch/PY A composites has poor in water resistance and mechanical properties after absorbing water [3,8]. Attempts to improve the mechanical properties and to decrease the water absorption property of the starch/PY A composites are made by adding the cross-linkers and plasticizers. Park et al. prepared starch/PY A/citric acid films by the casting method. They also studied the effect of (spell out) citric acid on the mechanical properties and water resistance of composites [9]. Zhai et al. prepared the starch/PY A hydrogels using electron-beam radiation [10]. Different kinds of lignocellulosic fibers have been investigated in blends for formulation of biocomposites."

This paper describes the inseparable relation between product design, liberation, and metallurgical recovery in the optimisation of the recycling of passenger vehicles. This is illustrated by the use of an optimisation model that uses among others a material combination matrix based on metallurgical process data, which depicts the consequences of the quality of intermediate recycling products on the metallurgical material recovery and final alloy metal quality. Various simulations will illustrate the effect of changes in product design and hence liberation on the recycling of end-of-life vehicles. Although this paper focuses on cars, the discussion is equally valid for any end-of-life product. Calibration of the model will be discussed with reference to experiments carried out in order to study the optimal recovery of aluminium applications used in passenger vehicles.

Low-temperature heat capacity determinations of the minerals goethite and pyrophyllite were made in the temperature range from 510 to 298° K. The entropies at 298.15° K were evaluated as 14.43 ±0.15 cal/deg mole for goethite and 56.6 ±0.5 cal/deg mole for pyrophyllite. The entropies of formation from the constituent oxides are -4.4 ±0.2 cal/deg mole for goethite and -12.3 ±0.6 cal/deg mole for pyrophyllite. The standard free energy of formation of goethite from its oxides is ?G°298.15 = 0.16 ±0.20 kcal/mole.

THE CHAIRMAN (B. B. GOTTSBERGER, Miami, Ariz.).-I think this experience of the Burro Mountain Copper Co. with oil engines as described by Mr. Legrand comes at a very opportune time. The fuel almost universally used in the mine power plants of the Southwest is oil. Additional economy in its use for power production is much to be desired. In the case of the Miami Copper Co., we have lately found it necessary to enlarge our power plant and, based on the experience of the Burro Mountain Copper Co., we have decided to install oil engines similar to those in their plant. I think it would be very interesting to have some discussion on this subject. Mr. Langton, did you tell me you had prepared some remarks?

Noise control is an important consideration in the design and operation of coal preparation plants. It is essential to understand and control noise sources to provide a safe environment for operating personnel. The average noise exposure levels in a typical coal preparation plant generally range between 95 and 100 db. An operator should not be exposed to noise levels of this magnitude for more than 4 and 2 hr, respectively, according to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations. The major noise sources in a coal preparation plant include noise from impacting the inside surfaces of steel chutes, vibrating screens, coal crushers, pumps, motors, fans, and blowers. The magnitude of noise varies considerably from one situation to another. NOISE EXPOSURE IN COAL PREPARATION PLANTS Noise regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health administration (OSHA) are accepted by MSHA relative to caal preparation plants. Fig. 14-43 shows a graph of the time of noise exposure in hours per day to which a worker can be exposed for each A-weighted sound level. According to this graph, a worker is permitted to spend 8 hr in a 90-db noise environment, but that time must be halved when the A-weighted sound level increases 5 db. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the length of time he is permitted to spend in that environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: where C is the actual duration of exposure at a given steady state noise level and T is the noise exposure limit for the level present during the time C According to MSHA regulations, the dosage, D, should not exceed one (1) for any worker for a full day of work. As an example of typical plant noise levels, vibratory screens and crushers emanate noise levels in excess of 90 db at a distance of 3 ft (0.9 m) with no material flow. The Building Products Company is Phoenix based and owned by Mission Clay products of California. Building Products is the only manufacturer of vitrified clay pipe in Arizona. The marketing area includes Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and California. Building Products, promoted by Arizona Public Service, was formed in 1970. Raw-materials prospecting was undertaken for 2 years, after which a $5-million plant was built. Initially, a satisfactory vitrified product could not be made with the raw materials then in hand. Subsequent prospecting and testing led to an acceptable raw-materials mix. Testing to upgrade the final product is a continuing process. The basic raw-materials supply must be adequate, secure, and capable of sustaining close tolerances in the final product. These needs are met by mining four geologic materials at three different localities: (1) refractory aluminous shales (two horizons-one pit) Colorado Plateau Province (Mogollon Rim); (2) less refractory aluminous materials from late Cenozoic lacustrine materials near Dewey in the Transition Zone (TZ); and (3) Precam¬brian "slate" from near New River along the southern edge of the TZ. Other additives include grog (ground-up, broken pipe) and barium carbonate that ties up what gypsum there is. Calcium magnesium carbonates are deleterious components that are minimized by careful selection of the mined products. The raw materials are blended and mixed, ground to 12 mesh, mixed in a pug mill, depleted of air, extruded into pipe ranging from 6 inches to 42 inches in diameter, transported to a hot-air drying room, fork-lifted to an appropriate kiln, and fired at a 1900-2000° F range. The "Rim" kaolinitic shales, being the most refractory ingredient, stabilize the pipe during the firing process. They are very plastic, and therefore facilitate extrusion. The Dewey clay fuses at a low temperature and forms an impervious glasslike binder. It also is plastic. The "slate" forms platy particles that tend to orient themselves during laminar flow. This provides strength for both the green and dried product. It doesn't absorb water, which helps the drying process. Grog remains stable during firing, and therefore helps to control shrinkage. The development of appropriate raw materials and proper mixtures has been done empirically.

"In the Dongri Buzurg Manganese Mine of M/s Manganese Ore (India) Ltd., high grade lumpy manganese ore required for iron and steel industries is produced through multi-stage crushing and screening. This has resulted in accumulation of 50,000 tonnes of low grade fines over the years. This production of such fines is still going on. The fines create environmental problems, like air and water pollution and siltation in adjoining fields. Besides containing lot of manganese values, they occupy large space which is very scare in mining area.The Indian Bureau of Mines under one of its statutory functions has suggested the company to explore the possibility of recovery of additional values under conservation and environmental aspects. Hence the company has sponsored a bulk sample for beneficiation studies in the Modern Mineral Processing Laboratory and Pilot Plant of Indian Bureau of Mines at Nagpur, India. The main manganese minerals present in these mine rejects have been identified as pyrolusite and psilomelane. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of evolving a suitable beneficiation flowsheet to obtain manganese concentrates assaying over 72% MnO2 to be used as raw material for the manufacture of dry cell batteries.The sample/material was subjected to characterisation studies in terms of chemical analysis, granulometry and mineralogical compositions. Based on these characterisation studies, the beneficiation process developed comprised of desliming, jigging and low intensity magnetic separation mainly to reject quartz, silicates and jacobsite. The manganese concentrate thus produced assayed 70.2% MnO2 with MnO2 recovery of 78% and weight per cent yield of 63.5. This natural concentrate could be mixed with the electrolytic manganese dioxide produced by the company and this blend can thus be used as a raw material for the manufacture of dry cell batteries by the end users. The paper deals with the details of test work carried out in evolving the process flowsheet."

SCOTT, London, England (communication to the Secretary*).-I am acquainted with the manganese-ore deposits of Russia, India and Brazil, and agree generally with the statements contained in the paper regarding those deposits. The information given by Mr. Harder regarding the Chilean deposits is very welcome. When examining the Caucasian deposits, I endeavored to determine the quantity of ore originally contained in the deposit, and by deduction, the amount remaining for extraction. These calculations were rendered possible by the great extent of the outcrop and the extensive work that had been carried on in the deposit. The physical phenomena which influence gas flow in the bosh and hearth of a blast furnace are discussed including the hold-up of slag as a mechanism which can result in a flooding condition. An equation is defined which describes the limitation to wind volume arising from the flooding condition. Implications of the various factors influencing bosh and hearth gas flow on furnace operation are discussed. Coke quality is shown to be the most important factor in the aerodynamics of these zones and coke requirements are defined for the Port Kembla No. 5 BF which has an inner volume of 2670 m3.
