IN these days of the spectacular in research and technological accomplishment, it is easy and natural to overlook some of the applications to everyday life of recent developments of a more pedestrian kind, or to fail to realize that sometimes two or three of the latter may be combined to serve a novel purpose in fields other than those in which they grew. The present remarks are to point out three such developments which might be combined to apply to an everyday function of the A.I.M.E. as an organization. By its Constitution, the A.I.M.E. is organized "to promote the arts and sciences connected with . . . minerals and metals, and the welfare of those employed in these industries . . .; to hold meetings for social intercourse and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate . . . among its members the information thus obtained . . .; and to . . . maintain . . . a library." By these words of Article I the profession of mining and metallurgy is recognized to involve many arts and sciences, of which the art and science of exchanging information is a leading one. As to methods of preparing or securing papers, the Constitution is silent.

WHEN Mr. Bain asked me to lunch with you he requested that I say a few words as to how the Institute could be helpful to the bituminous coal industry. I feel like saying, "Thank you, what have you?" I do not want to trace in detail the story that is old already to many of you. On the other hand it does take some little stage-setting to illustrate what is the matter in the bituminous coal industry, a trouble that must some day be cured. There has been something over a century of bituminous coal production as a real business in this country. True, Joliet and Marquette discovered coal in Illinois in 1673, according to published accounts of their travels, and shortly thereafter Father Hennepin also found Illinois coal in 1689. Coal was mined near Richmond in 1750, and Richmond shipped coal to New York and Philadelphia in 1789. But it was not until 1838 that the production of bituminous coal in this country totaled a yearly output equal to the minimum for one class A mine today, for that was the first year that production exceeded 200,000 tons.

Lead concentrates from Kuroko (black ore) mines, which contain 4-7% Cu, 55% Pb, 3-777, Zn, and 0.5-0.9% As, are pretreated by a hydrometallurgical process before electric furnace smelting with other lead resources from Kuroko. The hydrometallurgical pretreatment involves sulfuric acid leaching in the first stage and ferric leaching in the second stage. This paper describes the short history of lead recovery from Kuroko and the performance of laboratory tests and pilot plant and commercial operations.

William Metcalf, Pittsburg, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*): I am greatly pleased that some one has at last reached what I have long regarded as the only rational explanation yet given of the reasons why steel hardens. Mr. Field claims originality; and doubtless he is entitled to it, but not to priority, mhich must be granted to Prof. John W. Langley.' The difference between them is that Langley says " Tension, probably molecular," and Field says " Tension, probably atomic "; in either case the vital thing after solution is tension. Mr. Field's argument carries with it the idea of increase of density with hardness; if he mill study the facts farther he will observe that the case is just the reverse; that is, the greater the hardness the less the specific gravity; it was just this fact that led Langley to his conclusion, in mhich I have always concurred. Field agrees with Langley that the first requisite for perfect hardening is complete solution of the carbon, not combination; and all of the facts agree with this conclusion. The fact that increase of hardness causes reduction of density was first brought to my notice some 40 years ago, when Major William Wade was testing Jones & Laughlin's cold-rolled iron, and I mas his assistant. We found the well-known increase of tenacity, compressive strength, torsional resistance, and hardness. Specific-gravity tests showed that the cold-rolled iron was less dense than the hot-rolled bars. Major Wade was so surprised at this result that he gave me a lot of samples to weigh, saying that he was not satisfied with

As in organic nature certain animal and vegetable forms have undergone modifications, and thus, as it were, fitted themselves to live in a new environment, so it has been found possible in certain instances to form new metallic combinations which are practically immune to the natural conditions that exist on the earth at the present time. A few of the metals, such as gold, silver, and the metals of the platinum group, are found native, but the commoner heavy metals are nearly always found in the form of oxides or sulphides. For a number of years I have made experiments with a view to finding certain metallic combinations or alloys which would not only resist oxidation and other harmful influences, but would also possess valuable physical properties, which would render them fit for special service. The first decisive step made in this direction was the discovery of an alloy of nickel and chromium in 1898. The properties of this alloy have already been described in a previous paper.' Immediately following the discovery of the nickel-chromium alloy, I produced an alloy of cobalt and chromium, which has likewise been described in the reference given, but the range of proportion between the cobalt and chromium is so great, and the combination is modified to such a marked degree by the introduction of other substances, that I have felt justified in reading another paper on this subject, describing more fully my researches in this particular direction. Mine stope is typically backfilled with cemented paste backfill, which provides a regional underground stability and also a reduction of aboveground tailings accumulation. During backfilling, a phenomenon known as arching occurs and affects the stress distribution of the cemented paste backfill. The change in temperature due to uncontrolled heat transfer from the surrounding rock mass and/or generation from hydration process complicates the stress distribution development of cemented paste backfill. This paper presents results of the investigation on the effects of hydration to cemented paste backfill behaviour when backfilled into a narrow wall model using uncemented paste backfill as controlled sample. The parameters considered include backfill type (cemented paste backfill vs uncemented paste backfill), curing temperature (30°C–60°C), and stress evolution during pouring, consolidation, and curing stages. Results show that uncemented paste backfill re-establishes arching effects more readily, with lower peak stresses and greater stress relaxation than cemented paste backfill, of which its behaviour is significantly influenced by hydration under elevated temperatures. The main outcome of this work is that hydration critically controls the stress-temperature response of cemented paste backfill, and the balance between hydration-driven strength gain and stress relaxation can be leveraged to optimise backfill mix design for safer and more efficient stope filling.

W. E. Horst—In regard to the flotation rate being described as "first orcler" for flotation of quartz particles below 65 p in size (or any size studied in this work) in this paper, it appears that the authors' conception of rate equations is not in agreement with cited references. A first order rate equation has as one of its forms the following: a In.=a/a-x=kt where a = initial concentration, a—x = concentration at time t, t = time, and k = constant. The constant, k, has the dimension of reciprocal time which is similar to the specific flotation rate, Q. described by Eq. 2 in the authors' article, as has been previously discussed by Schumann (Ref. 1 of original article). The plotted data presented in Fig. 4 of the article utilizes the specific flotation rate, Q (min.'); however, there is not adequate data given to indicate the order of the rate equation which describes the flotation behavior of the quartz system studied. Results from the experimental work indicate that the relationship between rate of flotation (grams per minute) and cell concentration (provided the percent solids in the flotation cell is less than 5.2 pct and the particle size is less than 65 p) is described by an equation of the first order (R, = k c+", n being equal to 1 in this size range) and the use of the first order rate equation does not apply. Similarly the relationship for other particle size ranges studied is expressed by equations of the second or third order depending on the magnitude of n. T. M. Morris—The authors are to be commended for the experiments which they performed. As they state in their discussion the concentration of collector ion In solution did change with change in concentration of solids in the flotation cell. Since for a given slze of particle, flotation rate increases with concentration of collector until a maximum is reached, the effect of concentration of particles in their experiments was to vary the concentration of collector ions. A collector concentration which insures maximum supporting angle for all particles eliminates the unequal effect of collector concentration on various sized particles and the effect of size of particles and concentration of particles upon flotation rate could be more clearly assessed. I believe that if the authors had increased the concentration of collector to an amount sufficient to attain a maximum supporting angle for all particles they would find that the specific flotation rate of particles coarser than 65 p would be constant with change in the concentration of solids in the flotation cell, and that a first order rate would apply to the + 65 as well as to the —65 p sizes. It might also be discovered when this change in collector concentration was made that the maximum specific rate constant would be shifted toward a coarser fraction than when starvation quantities of collector are used since this practice favors the fine particles and penalizes the coarse particles. P. L. de Bruyn and H. J. Modi (authors' reply)—The authors wish to thank Professor Morris for his kind remarks and for mentioning the influence of equilibrium collector concentration on flotation rate. With a collector concentration sufficient to insure maximum supporting angle for all particles, a first order rate equation may indeed be found to be generally applicable irrespective of size. Such a concentration would, however, lead to 100 pct recovery of the fine particles and consequently defeat the essential objective of the investigation to derive the maximum information on flotation kinetics. To establish absolutely the validity of any single rate equation for a given size range, the ideal method would be to work with a feed consisting solely of particles of that size range. Use of such a closely sized feed would also eliminate the possibility of the interfering effect of different sizes upon one another. The authors do not believe that increasing the collector concentration would shift the maximum specific flotation rate (Q) towards a coarser fraction. Experimentation showed Q to be independent of solids concentration for all particles up to 65 µ in size, whereas the maximum value of Q was obtained in the range 37 to 10 p. Professor Morris contends that the addition of starvation quantities of collector favors fine particles at the expense of coarse particles, but the reason for this is not entirely clear to the authors. The comments by Mr. W. E. Horst are concerned only with the concept of the term "first order rate equation." According to the usage of this term in chemical kinetics, time is an important variable, as is shown in the equation quoted by Mr. Horst. All the experimental results reported by the authors were obtained under steady state continuous operations when the rate of flotation is independent of time. To be consistent with the common usage of the "first order rate equation," it would be more satisfactory to state that under certain conditions the experimental results show that the relation between flotation rate and pulp density is an equation of the first order.

Teck Cominco Metals Ltd. operates an integrated zinc-lead complex at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. The year 2007 marks ten years of operation of KIVCETTM flash smelting technology for the treatment of zinc plant residues and lead concentrates. Since start-up in 1997, the furnace throughput has been increased to exceed its design rate and other metallurgical performance targets while continuing to meet its environmental objectives. This was achieved through resolution of key mechanical issues, improved understanding to stabilize the reaction shaft operation and control furnace accretions, significantly reduced boiler corrosion by molten chloride salts through the extensive application of weld overlay, a suite of projects to improve furnace integrity, and some debottlenecking of the surrounding unit operations in the lead smelter. The combination of increased feed rate and improved on-line time allowed the KIVCETTM furnace to set a new quarterly feed throughput record of 129,300 tonnes in the first quarter of 2008.

"The Skanska/Kiewit/ECCO III team (SKE) in association with HNTB was awarded the design-build contract for Phase I of the Kosciuszko Bridge Replacement Project. As lead designer for the SKE team, HNTB was responsible for the design of the Brooklyn Connector which includes construction of approximately 2000 feet of new staged earth-filled embankments utilizing prefabricated modular retaining walls (T-Walls®). The proposed embankments will be constructed adjacent to and beneath the existing Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE) viaduct while the existing viaduct remains in service. Critical aspects of the settlement assessment relating to the soils supporting the existing BQE will be addressed, as their behavior drives the deformation of the viaduct. Furthermore, a construction monitoring program was used to enable the designer to assess settlement predictions and allow SKE to mitigate potential impacts to the existing BQE during construction. Additionally, the methodology for installation of the embankments in a limited access area underneath an active viaduct supported on settlement sensitive shallow foundations will be presented.INTRODUCTIONSkanska-Kiewit-ECCO III Joint Venture, in association with HNTB was contracted by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to design and construct the Phase 1 replacement of the Kosciuszko Bridge Design-Build Project. "This paper investigates the effect of driving a group of 52 open-ended Prestressed High Strength Concrete (PHC) piles on an existing highway embankment based on field measurements of excess pore pressure and lateral soil displacement. Excess pore pressure due to pile driving increased with depth and decreased with increasing distance from the pile, influencing a distance of 43 pile diameters. For pile groups, the rate of dissipation of excess pore pressure decreased with increasing depth and averaged 79% in 20 days, during which maximum ultimate bearing capacity was not yet attained. Lateral soil displacement continued to increase for a period of time after the end of pile driving and this could have resulted in significant inclination of piles if pile installation was too quick and pile spacing was too small. Lateral soil displacement due to pile group decreased with decreasing distance to the existing embankment as a result of high soil density produced by the embankment loading. The results also indicate that the effect of pile group installation on the existing embankment is negligible.INTRODUCTIONPile driving can cause excessive lateral displacement of soil and heaving of the ground surface, which may adversely affect nearby structures. In addition, lateral deformation and excess pore water pressure resulting from pile driving can exert lateral pressures and vertical forces on the piles, and impact negatively on the project and its surroundings. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the influence of pile driving on the nearby structures as well as the project itself when expansion works are carried out.Recent years have seen some development in the application of field tests for studying soil disturbance due to piles, and these tests usually involves pore water pressure and lateral soil displacement monitoring during pile driving. Results of field experiments performed by Reese and Seed (1957) in San Francisco Bay Mud with instrumented piles showed that pile installation generated large pore water pressures at the pile surface, with only slight increase at a distance of 15 pile diameters away. The measurements indicated that the increase in pore water pressures can exceed the initial total overburden pressure. Holtz and Lowitz (1965) reported a decrease in undrained shear strength immediately after pile installation, which was largely recovered after full pore pressure dissipation for field measurements within 1.5–2 pile diameters from the pile surface. Hwang et al. (2001) presented results of large scale pile driving tests where maximum excess pore water pressure generated decreased rapidly with increasing distance from pile. The excess pore water pressure became negligible at 15 pile diameters from the pile. Their results also showed that lateral displacement of the ground decreased with increasing distance from the pile. Pestana et al. (2002) carried out full-scale closed ended pile tests in the Young Bay Mud deposit. Higher excess pore pressures were observed for points closer to the pile, which decreased with increasing distance from the pile wall. Exponential decay of excess pore pressure with time was also noted. An 80% dissipation of excess pore pressure was achieved for soils more than one pile diameter away from the pile wall between 50 to 80 days. Lateral deformation generally decreased with increasing distance from pile wall, whilst varying erratically with depth. Bozozuk et al. (1978) reported on soil disturbance due to driving of 116 concrete piles in sensitive marine clays in a construction project. Maximum pore water pressures after pile driving within the group, and 6m (20 pile diameters) from the group were over 35-40% of the total overburden pressures, and the influence of pile driving on pore water pressure at 20m away from the group was very small. My qualification to speak on the globalization of the the mining industry comes from having worked in the industry in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Australasia in positions ranging from exploration geologist to chief executive. For about a third of my career I have lived and worked in the Southern Hemisphere. And for much of the rest of my career I have been involved in or responsible for activities in the Southern Hemisphere. This has given me the opportunity to experience globalization from the sharp end, as it were. This means speaking English with an Australian accent, Spanish with a Chilean accent, French with a West African accent and Dutch with an English accent. My topic is globalization, especially of the mining industry from a Southern Hemisphere perspective and specifically the experience and history of Gencor in that context. First, I will say a little about what globalization means to the southern part of the world: How and why the South differs from the North and how the challenge of globalization affects a south-based company differently than a northern one. I will also detail how Gencor has made significant progress in globalizing through the acquisition of mining assets from Shell. As Fig. 1 shows, I have divided up the world into northern and southern components, rather than hemispheres. The southern world comprises mainly countries that have emerged from the status of economic - if not political - colonies of nations such as England, Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands and, surprisingly, Italy and Germany. I have not considered the Indochinese and Arabian peninsulas in my southern world. The emergence of the. former is still in its early stages while the latter is clearly a part of the northern economic system. Large parts of Africa and South America are geometrically in the Northern Hemisphere but economically in the southern world. The reverse is the case for the IndoPersian peninsula. With the distinguished exception of Australia and South Africa, most of these countries nationalized their mining industries and mineral patrimony after attaining political independence. A major element of the globalization of the mining industry is related to the privatization of the mining industry in these countries and to the opening up of their min¬eral patrimony to non-national exploitation. The Southern Hemisphere is the watery part of the world. It is almost three quarters ocean as against a slight preponderance of land in the north. Economically, ocean areas have only a fraction of the productivity of land, except in a few oil-rich areas like the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea. The consequence is that even on an economically level playing field we would expect the south to generate only about one third of the world's economic product.

A medição online de umidade de finos de minério de ferro sempre foi uma informação muito desejada nas plantas de pelotização de minério de ferro. Controlar a umidade do pellet feed produzido pela unidade de filtragem além de possibilitar maximizar a produção deste setor da planta garante uma maior estabilidade no processo de pelotamento e de endurecimento. Para conseguir entregar esta medição à sala de controle, iniciamos um projeto utilizando a metodologia Design For Six Sigma para desenvolver uma forma de medição desta grandeza. Inicialmente foi feita uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o assunto. Posteriormente, foram realizadas visitas técnicas que eliminaram algumas possíveis tecnologias de medição. Finalmente, foram avaliadas as tecnologias de Absorção de RF e medição por um braço robótico para serem avaliadas. O primeiro teste industrial foi realizado com um medidor de absorção de RF que não apresentou bons resultados. A faixa de interesse de medição é muito estreita (9% a 11% de umidade). Esse fato exige uma boa precisão do equipamento para que a medida tomada do processo seja útil e sua incerteza não ocupe toda a faixa. Como nenhuma das tecnologias de medição online existentes no mercado se mostrou precisa suficiente para a aplicação, a alternativa foi utilizar um braço robótico para coletar, secar e medir a umidade através do método tradicional feito por um robô. Esta última alternativa se mostrou robusta e adequada ao controle de processo da unidade de filtragem, produzindo resultados confiáveis e precisos.

"A sulfide ore containing 2.19 g/t Au and 13.13 g/t Ag was studied for the deportment and extractive metallurgy of pay metals. The ore is composed mainly of non-sulfide minerals with approximately 10% pyrite and minor amounts of marcasite, chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, and arsenopyrite. The deportment study using a comprehensive approach showed that gold and silver minerals in the ore are mainly native gold (Au), electrum (Ag, Au), petzite (Ag3AuTe2), hessite (Ag2Te) and volynskite (AgBiTe2) with minor amounts of acanthite (Ag2S) and argyrodite (Ag8GeS6). At current grinding fineness (P70@150µm), the majority of liberated native gold and electrum particles are larger than 20µm with 85% >40µm, some of them are even larger than 150µm, indicating that extended leach time may be required to dissolve these coarse gold grains to completion and gravity concentration needs to be considered. Petzite is relatively fine with all liberated particles being less than 80µm in size. Gold distribution and leach testwork results showed that liberated gold accounts for 50% of the head assay, exposed gold associated with sulfide and non-sulfide minerals accounts for 30% and 11% of the head assay, respectively. Gold locked in sulfide and non-sulfide accounts for 4.8% and 4.1%, respectively. Thus, it is recommended that cyanide leaching be considered for extracting gold in this ore. This paper presents the detailed results of the gold and silver deportment study and extractive metallurgy testwork, and discusses the impact on process selection and flowsheet development.INTRODUCTION Gold and silver have been found in various geological environments and ore types. In terms of the gold deportment and extractability, gold ores can be classified into two categories and 12 types. Their extractive metallurgy is largely driven by mineralogical factors such as particle size, association with other minerals, coatings and rimmings, presence of cyanicides, oxygen consumers and preg-robbers, presence of refractory gold minerals and locking of submicroscopic gold in sulfide and sulfarsenide mineral structures (Zhou et al., 2004; Marsden & House, 2006; Zhou, 2013a, 2013b). Compared to gold, silver mineralogy is more complex and metal extraction is more challenging due to its presence in over 200 Ag-bearing minerals (a silver-rich ore body would typically contain 5 to 10 different silver minerals) (Gasparrini, 1984), presence of refractory silver minerals (such as pyrargyrite, prustite and stephanite) and submicroscopic silver in sulphide minerals (such as galena and copper minerals) (Chryssoulis et al., 1985; Di Prisco et al., 2002). The presence of these issues often causes problems in Ag-bearing ore processing. Therefore, knowing the deportment of gold and silver in the ores and metallurgical products is important for flowsheet development and process optimization."

MOST mining engineers and geologists realize the value of photographs in their professional work. Members of each group use photographs to illustrate their reports, and articles and photographs, when available, will often save many words of written text in explaining some point or in proving some pet theory. No one hesitates to take aboveground pictures but many rarely take their cameras underground. However, underground photography, too, is really simple. I do not believe that anything new is offered here and the procedures given are merely a compilation of various methods I have tried and used, with some success, over the past six or seven years. The article will deal with photographs to be taken in metal mines, but only in those where no gas hazard exists, with resultant danger of explosions and fire. Some mining company geologists consider the camera a necessary part of their equipment and carry one on their daily trips to the various parts of the mine under their observation. I know of one company whose files of geologic sketches of heading, backs. and veins are supplemented by actual photographs so that a nice geologic picture

The Cameco Key Lake mill began processing U-bearing waste rock from the McArthur River mine in 2000. This ore often contains elevated levels of calcium (>4% by mass), resulting in less than favourable conditions in parts of the Key Lake mill, yet still contains U3O8 at a concentration of about 0.3%. To recover the U3O8 and reject as much calcium as possible, modifications were made to the grinding circuit in late 2007 to include a gravity concentrator. The concentrator allows this mineralized waste to be processed separate from the regular blend material, rejecting calcium and concentrating U3O8, thus improving the operating conditions in areas such as SX. This will be presented in greater detail along with results and further work.

The old plan was to increase every part of a rail much in the same proportion. But each part should be in proportion to what it ha.; to do. The head should be deep in proportion to tile amount. of traffic and the lowness of the rate of interest on its cost. The body need only he strong enough to carry the head after it is well worn down, and that deperlds on the weight of the machinery, and in the case of steel has little to do with the volume of traffic, except SO far as that affects weight of machinery. Ad on most railroad systems, the same niacliinery is used on main lines with heavy traffic, and bra11ct:es with light, I suggested in 1874 that each systern adopt the same body of rail for both, and make the head deeper on the main lines, shallower on the branches. This plan was adopted on the Pennsylvania Railroad. Bandberg seems to recognize this in his patterns of 1878. E. W. HUNT, TRoy, N. Y.: Again Dr. Dudley preaents to our cousideration a series of most carefully conductetl experiments, and ~llile I fully appreciate the labor and thought this work has cost him, I must still hesitate to accept his deductiono. This paper dilliirs from the previous one in that it denls esclrieively with the wearing qualitiei. of steel rails. Dr. Dudley gives his reason for this change in the following statement: " With the improvement in maintenance of way which has characterized the Pennsylvania Railroad during the last five or six yearn, the remova1 of rails from the track from the first two of these causes (i. e., broken and crushel), has, if I am right, quite notably diminished. This certainly is true with regard to broken rails. And if, as time advances, the number of crushed rails shall diminish, both because of the continued improvement in maintenance of way before referred to, and because, owing to improved and better methods at the steel works, there are fewer crushed rails caused by physical defects in the steel, the question of the wearing capacity of steel rails obviously becomes the allimportant one." Certainly the condition of the roadhd has much to do with mils brealring, crushing, and wearing. If the Pennsylvania and other railroads have done and are doing their part, Dr. Dudley oourteously admits that the steel works have performed part of theirs. But as far as I am informed, the formulas which they have used have been and are still quite wide of the one he continues to recommend. The rails which are not breaking or crushing to so great an extent as formerly, contain higher percentages of both carbon and manganese.

The amounts of oxygen in liquid iron-titanium alloys up to 50 pct Ti were measured and the oxide phases in equilibrium with these alloys were determined by using TiO² crucibles. A minimum of about 0.003 pct 0 occurs at less than 1 pct Ti. The various liquid and solid oxide phases can be arranged on a ternary isotherm. THREE characteristics of titanium contribute to the interesting aspects of its reaction with oxygen in liquid iron: 1—It forms a number of stable oxides. 2—All oxides have large negative free energies of formation. 3—The pure metal exhibits high solubility for oxygen. In addition, the use of titanium as a stabilizing and strengthening element in alloys suggests a need for investigation of its reactions in amounts greater than those normally required for deoxidation. These higher compositions are also of interest because they occur during the addition of ferroalloys and produce deoxidation products before dilution is achieved. Titanium Deoxidation in the Literature While the use of titanium as an alloying element and deoxidizer has been common for several decades, the first detailed study of its deoxidizing characteristics was carried out by Wentrup and Hieber' in 1939. These authors determined the extent of deoxidation possible with titanium and identified, by microscopic examination, the products formed. They found that titanium in excess of 0.2 pct did not reduce the oxygen content of iron below 0.004 pct at 1600°C. They identified the spinel FeO-TiO² at low titanium concentrations and Ti2O³ in melts containing more than 0.2 pct Ti. A portion of the area surveyed by Wentrup and Hieber has been investigated recently by Evans and Sloman² using X-ray diffraction for inclusion identification. They concurred in general with the findings of Wentrup and Hieber, but reported the existence of Ti³O5 as a deoxidation product in the range near 0.1 pct Ti. Comstock, Urban, and Cohen³ discussed the deoxidation of iron with titanium, correlating the data of Wentrup and Hieber with free-energy data for the titanium oxides. Scatter at high titanium values was considered attributable either to the formation of an oxide exhibiting high solubility in liquid iron or to the entrainment of solid oxide particles leading to high apparent solubility. Chipman' has calculated the deoxidation curves for titanium based on free-energy data for titanium oxides. These calculations (Fig. 1) and those of Comstock, Urban, and Cohen involve assumptions as to the activity coefficients of oxygen and titanium in liquid iron, since such data have not been determined. Investigation of the deoxidizing characteristics of chromium" and vanadium0 have shown that these elements decrease the activity coefficient of oxygen in liquid iron, leading to a tendency toward relatively high oxygen values and experimental scatter in highly alloyed melts. Experimental This investigation involved two major objectives: 1—determination of the composition of the oxide phases in equilibrium with liquid Fe-Ti alloys, and 2—establishing the pattern of oxygen solubility in liquid Fe-Ti alloys at titanium concentrations in excess of that required for attainment of minimum oxygen content. Research has shown that an ergonomics process that identifies risk factors, devises solutions to reduce musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), and evaluates the effectiveness of the solutions can lower worker exposure to risk factors and MSDs and improve productivity. A review of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury/illness database indicated that 46% of illnesses in 2004 were associated with repetitive trauma and 35% of nonfatal lost days involved material handling during 2001? 2004. Even though these statistics show that MSDs significantly contribute to occupational illnesses and injuries in the U.S. mining industry, few mining companies have implemented an ergonomics process. Despite the many unique challenges in the mining environment, three mining companies partnered with the MSD Prevention Team at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory to demonstrate that an ergonomics process could be systematically implemented and effectively integrated with existing safety and health programs. Because these three mining companies were very different in organization, culture, and size, the ergonomics processes had to be modified to meet the needs of each company. A description of how these three companies applied ergonomics and the tools and training used to implement their processes is given. Prior to discussing the case studies, general information on the elements of an ergonomics process is provided.

One might ask why someone like myself, involved in the determination of taxes, should be speaking at a "cost engineering" session of a national engineering society. While it is true that taxes, especially income taxes, whether they be federal, state, or local, are not usually thought of as a "cost" of doing business, it is equally true that these tax costs do reduce the distributable profits just as much, as the cost of power, supplies, or labor. Therefore, the consideration given to taxes is often as important as that given to other costs. Hopefully yea will recognize that, within certain limits, taxes can be controlled to an economic advantage. That question may then lead to another question: What does the amount of taxes have to do with me? I'm an engineer or manager; not an accountant or a lawyer. If I may take a few minutes of your time, I might be able to present in a brief discussion some interesting facts that will provide the answers to those questions. My discussion will be directed mainly to Federal taxes. However, much of it will be applicable to state and local taxes, also.
