This report describes the potential for utilization of satellite observations for remote sensing of mine waste disposal areas. Four study sites consisting of metal and nonmetal mining areas in different climatic and physiographic regions of contigous United States were used in this investigation. The mine waste disposal sites consisted of mining of phosphates in Florida, copper in Arizona, silver in Idaho, and coal in West Virginia. Landsat satellite multispectral scanner observations were used together with aerial photographs, ground surveys, U.S. Geological Survey maps, and other ancillary information. Landsat digital data were categorized using automated supervised classification algorithms and an image analysis system. Detailed description of automated classification techniques employed and the accuracy attained is provided together with the results of manual interpretations. The inventory of areas distrubed for phosphate mining and a change detection investigation for-Polk County Florida were also undertaken during this study.

In wedge-shaped bicrystals of zone-refined aluminum it is observed that (111) pure tilt boundaries migrate under the driving force of their own inter-facial free energy. The boundary velocity is a power function of the driving force. The driving force exponent decreases with decreasing angle of misorien-tation. For example, at 64O°C, the exponent decreased from 4.0 for a 40 deg to 3.2 for a 16 deg tilt boundary. An evaluation of the driving force acting on the boundaries during their motion indicates that for low driv-forces, up to about 2 x l03 ergs per cu cm, the velocity is relatively independent of misorientation, whereas at higher driving forces a 40 deg tilt boundary exhibits the highest velocity. The measured activation energy for boundary migration approaches that for bulk self-diffusion at low driving forces, decreasing from 33 to 27 kcal per mole as the driving force is increased from 1 x l0 to 5 x l03 ergs per cu cm. These results are compared with current theories of grain-boundary migration. In previous experimental studies of grain boundary migration the driving force has been limited to a difference in stored energy across the boundary. This stored energy has been introduced into the crystal either by prior deformation1-3 or by grown-in lineage structure. A part of the energy stored in the deformed crystal is released by recovery either prior to or concurrently with grain boundary migration, thus introducing an uncertainty as to the magnitude of the driving force responsible for grain boundary migration. The grown-in lineage structure, though thermally stable during annealing, neither provides conditions under which different levels of energy may be stored in the imperfect crystal nor provides a control of orientation difference across the migrating boundary of a growing grain. Furthermore, because of variation in the lineage structure, it is difficult to determine accurately the energy stored in the imperfect crystal. Several investigations of grain boundary migration during normal grain growth have also suffered from difficulties in estimating the driving force because of uncertainties in the principal radii of curvature.~ In the present investigation the velocity of pure tilt boundaries in zone-refined aluminum bicrystals of selected orientation (40, 30, and 16 deg around the [Ill] tilt axis) has been measured in the absence of a dislocation density difference across the moving boundary, thus eliminating the previous experimental difficulties. The driving force for boundary migration is derived from a gradient of the total interfacial free energy of the migrating boundary in wedge-shaped bicrystals. A similar method was attempted by Bron and Machlin in a study of grain boundary migration in silver. However, they found that one of the crystals was deformed and consequently the motion of the boundary was partly due to a difference of stored energy across the boundary. The observed behavior of boundary velocities as affected by the driving force is examined in the light of the predictions of the current theories of grain boundary migration.7"10 The effect of boundary misorientation on velocity is compared with the theory of " which is based on a dislocation core model for high-angle boundaries. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Seed-oriented bicrystals of zone-refined aluminum, 2.5 cm wide, 0.5 cm thick, and 12 cm long, containing tilt boundaries with a common (111) axis, were grown from the melt in the direction of this axis. Spectro-graphic analysis, reported earlier,'' indicated the purity of the crystals to be 99.999+pct. Three such bicrystals containing 16, 30, and 40 deg tilt boundaries were used. Wedge-shaped specimens were prepared from these bicrystals by spark cutting followed by electrolytic polishing. The angle of the wedge was usually 40 deg and the specimens were usually 0.25 cm thick. The intercrystalline boundary was located within 0.2 to 0.5 cm from the tip of the wedge. Fig. 1 shows a section of an oriented bicrystal containing an outline of a wedge-shaped specimen. The crystallographic directions shown in Fig. 1 represent the orientation of one of the crystals (the larger section of the bicrys-tal); the orientation of the other crystal differs only by rotation around the common [lil] axis. The Giroux Consolidated Mines Co. is equipping a five-compartment shaft at Kimberly, Nev., which will serve the Alpha mine. The depth of this shaft, January, 1910, is 963 ft., and of this depth 948 ft. was opened by raising; 15 ft. of sinking was done so that the bearers, collar-set, and three shaftrsets might be installed and concreted, and with this done it mas possible to erect the necessary surface-equipment for resuming shaft-timbering on the completion of the raise. The arrangement of the shaft-timbering is shown in Fig. 1. At the 1,000-ft. level of the Alpha, and 750 f't. SW. from the Alpha shaft, a 14- by 18-ft. station was cut, and a 25-h-p. airhoist was installed. From here the raising commenced on July 5, 1909. The raise was cut approximately 13 by 21 ft. in area, and supported by timbering with square sets, illustrated in Fig. 2, which shows the division into four compartments. The end compartments, which were used as chutes, had the center girts heavier than in the others on account of the wear from falling rock. The chute-lining was braced by inserting 8- by 8-in. stiffeners parallel to and half way between successive caps. Similarly, the lagging on the wall sides of the cage-way and the compartment for pipes and ladder was stiffened with 4- by 6-in. timbers. In the pipe-and-ladder compartment the chute-stiffeners were reinforced with 8-by 8-in. struts, and as the cage-way was partitioned off by braced lining, there was practically no chance of rock entering the ladder-way in case a chute burst into the cage-way. Over the two center compartments the last two sets were always bulkheaded with 8- by 12-in. timbers, shown in Fig. 3, and from the lower bulkhead the cage sheave-wheel was suspended. Dr C. M. van Staden (Fellow): Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much for this opportunity to contribute to the paper by Dr Stander, and Messrs Henzen and Funke. First of all, my congratulations to Dr Stander on being re-elected President of the International Association of Water Pollution Research. We in South Africa are proud that this honour was again bestowed on our leading scientist in the field of water research. Furthermore, my congratulations to the authors of this paper. The growth of the pollution problem caused by acidic water discharged from abandoned collieries, is known to most of us. However, I am not aware of any case where an abandoned gold mine is directly discharging polluted underground water. I think it is also a debatable point as to what the quality of underground water being discharged from abandoned gold mines would be in the long run. Any reduction works on a gold mine which practises only fairly good housekeeping, should not cause any water pollution by cyanide. First of all, any cyanide solution before gold precipitation would be too valuable to lose. Secondly, the precipitated solution, which contains the cyanide, is used to pump slime to slimes dams. Any cyanide pollution that may occur at the slimes dam, must come from the top and, fortunately, the days when pen stock water was discharged directly from the top of dams into public streams, have gone. Run-off and seepage is usually acidic, thus decomposing the cyanide. The code of practice by the Chamber of Mines is quite clear on the point as to how the tops of dams should be secured, to prevent any process water or storm-water polluting public streams. The general standards are given on page three of the paper. To my knowledge, under certain circumstances a degree of relaxation can be given regarding the faecal coli count; namely a permissible count of 1 000 per 100 ml. I feel very strongly that research aimed at inhibiting the activity of acid-producing bacteria should be encouraged. Success in this field would be of great benefit to the mining industry. I am very thankful that the authors have mentioned vegetation of dumps as a method to combat water pollution, with the full awareness that the key objective in vegetating dumps is to prevent air pollution. The following account of oil-shale operations in Australia is based upon infor- mation obtained by the authors while visiting Australia from September 15 to October 7, 1947, supplemented by published data, and augmented by analyses of samples of oil shale and its products at the Oil-shale Research and Development Laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Laramie, Wyo. The primary objective of the authors' trip to Australia was to obtain, first hand, information regarding the equipment and methods used by National Oil Proprie- tary, Ltd., at Glen Davis, New South Wales, in mining oil shale, extracting oil from it, and refining the shale oil. This company was operating the only oil-shale plant that had been active in Australia since 1945. The plant comprised an oil-shale mine, 104 modified Pumpherston (Fell) retorts in 2 batteries, a hele refinery, and a 3-inch gusoline pipeline to the railroad loniing terminal t Sun Junction, 30 miles away. The occurrences of manganese In Alabama were reported to be widely scattered over the northeastern section of the State, and these were examined before a development project was started.2/ The most promising and available showings were chosen for further investigation, which include 1 deposit in Goshen Valley, 6 in the Rock Run area, and 2 in the northern section of Calhoun County. The work was performed by the Bureau of Mines from July 29, 1949, to February 17, 1950. The work consisted of power auger drilling 69 holes 3-1/2 inches in diameter and totaling 2,548.4 linear feet. The accuracy of samples from auger drill holes in this type of deposit was determined by sinking two shafts a total depth of 68.17 feet, from which channel samples were cut. Sixteen rotary core holes totaling 1,048.7 linear feet were drilled with a 3-inch, double-tube core barrel. Twenty-two diamond core holes were drilled with a 2-1/8-inch, double-tube core barrel and NX diamond bit. In addition to the above drilling 220.8 cubic yards of soil and rock was excavated by hand from 403.9 linear feet of trenches and 69.7 feet of test pita. A total of 206 samples were taken and analyzed for manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, and insoluble.

ROOM- and elevated-temperature compression tests were made on the binary 3/2 electron compounds AuZn, CuAu, AgZn, AgMg, AuCd, and NiA1. These compounds possess either the B2 CsC1-type ordered structure or the A2 bee disordered structure represented commonly as ß and ß on equilibrium phase diagrams. In testing at room temperature, cylindrical specimens 0.508 cm by 0.330 cm diam were seated directly on an instron compression load cell (CF 0 to 10,000 lb). At elevated temperatures, testing included a special apparatus with a furnace heat source and a protective atmosphere.' The specimens were strained at a rate of 1 pet per min. The compounds were prepared from 99.99 pet or better high-purity elements. Vacuum and/or argon cover gas was used throughout the mixing, melting, and specimen drawing processes. Spiral concentrators are widely applied to beneficiate commodities such as Cr2O3, mineral sands, and ferrochrome. The application of spirals for heavy minerals has been limited to a feed top size of 1 mm. At particle sizes larger than this, friction retards heavy particles and the particles' primary velocity approaches zero, resulting in a solids build-up, therefore inhibiting further separation. Recently, a new Multotec SC25 spiral model was introduced to the industry, which aids in beneficiating particles of up to 3 mm, with successes having been demonstrated in ferrochrome slag and titanium-bearing minerals. This spiral also has potential in electronic waste applications. This paper examines the applicability of the SC25 spiral in coarse Cr2O3 recovery. This stems from the fact that junior chrome miners tend to discard particles larger than 1 mm as they neither have milling nor dense media circuits. Also, alluvial chrome miners discard +1 mm even though this size fraction contains recoverable and liberated Cr2O3. The SC25 spiral has shown better Cr2O3 separation efficiencies than the SC21 model and with higher SiO2 rejection at saleable grades, thus providing an additional revenue stream specifically for the coarser (+820 μm) size fractions. An interesting new flotation technique which reportedly improves mineral recovery over an extended particle size range-from 3 mm to 5 microns and below-has been developed by the Institute of Physical Chemistry, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Designated the "static" flotation technique, it is suited for upgrading tin, molybdenum, tungsten, uranium, gold, copper, lead, zinc, and other metallic ores. Recoverable nonmetallics include feldspar, sulfur, and phosphorite. Characteristic of the static flotation process are: •longer contact period (up to 1000 times longer between particles and bubbles, •low collision velocity and inertial forces between the contact and aeration in a thin pulp layer, • aeration without the harmful hydrodynamic repulsion upon particles below 5 microns (the pulp layer is only a few millimeters thick and rising bubbles collide with the particles either directly or in the thin foam films formed), •option to conduct the process with or without froth by film flotation at equilibrium contact angles, and • the use of inexpensive frothers and/or unstable froth with separate regulations of froth stability by hydrodynamic, ultrasonic, or electrostatic means.

Originally built in 1856, the existing bridge carries 5 railroad tracks servicing MNRR and AMTRAK and spanned over Atlantic Street in Stamford, CT providing two (2) lanes of traffic beneath the bridge.  Replacement of the bridge was driven by several factors including age, traffic improvements to widen the narrow underpass to service 5 lanes of traffic and increase headroom beneath the bridge to reduce restrictions on larger vehicular traffic.  The proposed pile supported bridge abutments were designed to be constructed while keeping all 5 railroad tracks in service, creating a need for individual jumpspan girder systems beneath each track.  A temporary excavation support system (SOE) design was included in the Contract  and consisted of drilled H-piles soldier piles and bracing with bolted connections.  GTR re-designed the SOE system to accommodate low headroom restrictions and constructability issues associated with track outages and site logistics.  Several key factors were to be considered for the SOE system: (1) headroom restrictions beneath catenary systems, (2) train axial, lateral, braking and traction forces, (3) headroom during pile cap construction, (4) integrating the SOE system to accept the “jump span” bridge components, and (5) Phased construction considerations.  To address these factors, GTR designed an SOE employing drilled micropile load bearing soldier piles with internal bracing to tunnel beneath the active railroad traffic.  This SOE scheme was successfully installed in low headroom conditions beneath existing  catenary lines in five (5) phases and included an innovative pre-fabricated bearing connection “top hat” to accept the jump span bridge.  Each phase of work was successfully installed and completed to support each active railroad track in five - 9-day outages. To achieve the required excavation support, a detailed phasing plan was required to support each adjacent track as subsequent jump span bridges were installed.  Although tedious excavation and bracing installation process was required, supporting the railroads required a robust system to ensure the safety of the workers and rail traffic alike.  After the SOE and jump span bridges were installed, the abutment foundations were constructed beneath the jump span bridges and between the SOE’s. Careful analysis and planning allowed for the creation of an accurate and precise system to support the axial and lateral train pressures while performing the required construction under the rail traffic.  This paper presents a unique case study of the “tunneling” beneath active railroad tracks utilizing a temporary support of excavation system to construct proposed pile supported abutments.

In the normal operation of a brass-rolling mill, sheet and strip has, for the most part, been finished in comparatively thin gauges, involving a substantial amount of cold-work and a considerable number of anneals. This condition has been disturbed by the preponderance of cartridge brass, which is not rolled to thin gauges, and particularly by brass for artillery cartridge cases, on which the mill may finish its work at a thickness between 0.400 and 0.900 in. Obviously, the amount of rolling and the number of anneals to which such a product can be subjected are small compared with strip that is carried to a thickness of a few hundredths of an inch. As a result, critical examination into the internal condition of metal has been made on an extensive scale at a stage of manufacture that would not, in normal times, have been chosen for complete inspection. Under these conditions, a type of defect has been recognized that is not seen at thinner gauges. It might be more accurate to call it the appearance of a defect, since it refers to an apparently laminated, discontinuous structure, which, in fact, does not exist as such, and disappears after suitable treatment. For this reason it has been called a phantom lamination, which the authors consider an appropriate term. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the phenomenon and the conditions of its occurrence and, at least tentatively, to discuss its nature and cause. Great numbers of phantoms may be found in 2:r brass, either hot-rolled or cold-rolled. They are also found in 70-30 brass, sometimes when hot-rolled and generally when cold-rolled. It is not believed that phantoms are confined to these alloys but this paper is limited to them for the purpose of description. Hot-rolled 2:1 Brass For illustration, therefore, a typical cake of hot-rolled 2:I brass has been chosen. This was rolled to a slab 36 in. thick, from a casting 5 in. thick by 24 in. wide by 18 in. high, which was believed to have been sound. After hot-rolling and cooling, the slab was sheared and a portion of such a shear cut is shown in Fig. I. It would be difficult to convince anyone viewing this specimen that the metal was not unsound. The impression would be confirmed by the appearance of a tensile break, as shown in Fig. 2. This is an ordinary tensile-test piece from metal just described. Although there was nothing in its tensile strength or elongation that suggested unsoundness, it appeared run through with pipes and laminations. To question the reality of such a condition would imply questioning the obvious. But, considering the history of the metal, it would be difficult to believe that it could be so bad as it appeared. It seemed reasonable, though, that if the defects were what they appeared to be, they could be traced back from the sheared or broken face.

To those who have had the happy privilege of friendship with George W. Goetz, the announcement of his death has brought great sadness. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, February 17, 1855, and died January 15, 1897. In his boyhood days, when I first came to know him, his frank, trustful manner; his eyes brimming with truthfulness; his eagerness, never obtrusive, to gain knowledge from all whom he met; and his equal readiness to give without ostentation of his store, constituted a personality which at once commanded confidence and won friendship. I am told that as a scholar of five years he was conspicuous for brightness, a show-pupil, who was called on to recite when visitors were present at school. Yet this in no way spoiled him. His modesty was too strong a trait in his character to be overcome by any attention which might, be expected to arouse vanity. In his simple-heartedness he was pleased then, as he always was in his maturer years, to give of his knowledge for the gratification of his listeners, with never a thought of himself. So strong was this characteristic that in a brief autobiography, in the form of a letter to his wife and children, found among his papers, he excuses himself to them for recounting what he had accomplished in his life-work. As a preface to this autobiography (which, it seems, was prepared on the eve of a sudden journey to California, taken February, 1895, for his health) he says: " I am writing this rather hastily, and I

Correias transportadoras de alta temperatura são ativos críticos para a pelotização devido ao prejuízo que sua falha pode trazer para a produção. Nesse sentido, deve-se avaliar a vida útil da correia em uso, visando, principalmente, auxiliar sua manutenção, e nesse contexto o presente trabalho tem como proposta utilizar a caracterização dos componentes e o estudo da degradação térmica do material da cobertura de correias transportadoras de alta temperatura. As caracterizações foram realizadas de modo comparativo entre três tipos distintos de correias transportadoras de alta temperatura fornecidas para a VALE S.A. Os reforços das correias foram caracterizados por FT-IR para análise qualitativa do polímero. De maneira semelhante, as borrachas foram caracterizadas por meio da análise do produto de pirólise via FT-IR e a densidade de ligações cruzadas por meio da técnica de inchamento do polímero e aplicação da equação de Flory-Rhener, o que ajudou a justificar o comportamento das diferentes marcas de correia perante a degradação térmica, estudada em um trabalho anterior. A partir desses resultados e utilizando dados de variação das propriedades mecânicas do material em função do tempo e temperatura de processo, pôde-se avaliar a taxa de dano causado a cada correia e, aplicando-se dados reais de processo, avaliou-se o desempenho das correias em trabalho.

IT has been suggested by a number of investigators, I including Hume-Rothery and Raynor,' that certain intermediate phases in metal systems take on interstitial crystal structures because of an appropriate ratio of radii of the two atoms. If the size factor is an important parameter in determining whether or not an intermediate phase will have an interstitial structure, then it would appear reasonable that the relative sizes of interstitial atoms should have a direct relation to their solubilities in interstitial compounds. It was on such a basis that Petch,' in his discussion of the cementite structure, concluded that nitrogen is the only possible element which could replace carbon. Recent X-ray studies by Jacka indicate that the solid solubility of nitrogen in cementite is negligible. If this is the case, then on the basis of size factor it would not be expected that any element can replace carbon in FeaC, since according to Schwarzkopf and Kieffer4 the covalent atomic radii of nitrogen, carbon, and boron are 0.71, 0.76, and 0.87A, respectively. Nevertheless, Vogel and Tammann in 1922 indicated that a quasi-binary relation exists between the interstitial compounds FeaC and Fe2B and that the solid solubility of boron in FeaC at approximately 1150°C is 1.4 pct B by weight. Because of the apparent disagreement between theory and experiment, the solid solubility of boron in FeaC has been reinvestigated. In addition, the influence of boron on the saturation magnetic moment (per gram) and Curie temperature of cementite was determined. Experimental Procedure A series of Fe-B-C alloys which varied in boron content from 0 to 5.4 wt pct B were prepared by arc melting a 50-g ingot using carbonyl iron, Ache-son AUC graphite, and Cooper grade A boron for starting materials. The composition of these alloys is listed in Table I and shown graphically in Fig. 1. The samples represented by the solid circles were used for X-ray analysis and Curie temperature measurements; by the squares, samples used for quantitative metallography; and by the triangles, samples used for saturation magnetic moment measurements and Curie temperature measurements. After arc melting and subsequent quenching from 1000°C, so that all phases in the resulting microstructure were brittle, one half of the 50-g ingots were pulverized until a powder was obtained which was less than 100 mesh. These powders were then homogenized in evacuated Vycor capsules at 1000°C for 24 hr and water quenched. Although the homogenized powder had sintered somewhat, it was suitable for saturation magnetic moment and Curie temperature determinations, for which the 60 to 100-mesh fraction of the powder was used. For X-ray analysis the homogenized powder was crushed again until a 300-mesh powder was obtained. Rock mass discontinuity mapping plays a crucial role in developing a reliable Discrete Fracture Network (DFN), providing insights into the distribution of geometrical and mechanical properties of discontinuities. This enables an accurate assessment of geotechnical infrastructure and mining excavations. Data obtained through conventional mapping approaches are substantially limited by factors such as accessibility and subjectivity. Moreover, these conventional methods may pose inherent risks due to manual techniques, exposing practitioners to potential dangers. Recent digital developments in remote surveying techniques offer opportunities for safer and more reliable rock mass discontinuity surveys. These technologies allow extensive three-dimensional surveying and the production of high-resolution 3D surface models, applicable at any time. This paper presents a workflow for digital discontinuity mapping employing drone technology and photogrammetry. Additionally, the capabilities and challenges of applying artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in the rock mass discontinuity characterisation process are discussed.

The Paseo Bridge was located at the I-29/I-35/US-71 Missouri River Highway Crossing. It was built between 1952 and 1954 by Massman Construction Company. The 1,232 foot long, self-anchored suspension bridge was the longest of its type when built. On Jan. 22, 2003, a connector pin designed to allow the bridge to expand and contract during temperature cycles seized and caused a portion of the bridge deck to raise up and block traffic. This marked the beginning of the end for the old Paseo Bridge.
