The objective of this U.S. Bureau of Mines hydrologic-subsidence investigation was to evaluate the effects of longwall mining on the local ground water regime through field monitoring and numerical modeling. Field data were obtained from multiple-position borehole extensometers (MPBX's) that were used to measure subsurface displacements. Survey monuments were installed to measure mining-induced surface deformations. Numerous drawdown and recovery tests were performed to characterize hydrologic properties of the overburden strata. Coreholes were drilled above the study area to determine lithologic and strength characteristics of the overburden strata using the rock samples collected. Electronic recorders were installed on all monitoring wells to continuously monitor ground water levels in coordination with mining of the longwall panels. A combined finite element model of the deformation of overlying strata, and it's influence on ground water flow was used to define the change in local and regional water budgets. The predicted effects of the postmining ground water system determined by the model correlated well with field data collected from the fieldsite. Without an infiltration rate added to the model, a static decrease of 3.0 m (10 ft) in water level would occur due to mining of both longwall panels and if an infiltration rate was inputted in the model, no predicted long-term effects would occur to the ground water system.

It has been generally concede by those who have learned to value the life and limbs of their employees, that safety is essential to efficiency and no company that has a high accident rate can be considered an efficient organization. Accidents have a destructive effect on the morale of any body of workers and cause disorganization and delays.The increasing danger to life and limb involved in the drilling for and the production of oil and gas, has become so great that it is clearly evident that everything possible must be done to keep it within the narrowest possible limits.There is a tendency toward carelessness, especially by men who are employed in hazardous occupations. This is brought about by the familiarity of the risk under which they are working and in no industry is this more forcibly exemplified than in the oil fields. Men have performed the same or similar duties for many years and have worked around similar hazards and unprotected machinery until many have can entire disregard for the dangers surrounding then. Very often familiarity with a hazard occasions a contempt for that hazard which only too often results disastrously."

THE papers by G. F. Loughlin and I. A. Ettlinger discussed the distribution of formations and ore-bodies in two of the main mining districts of the Southwest. The convergence of the deeper orebodies at Cripple Creek points to their common hypogene ori-gin, as do the occurrences of the copper ores of, central Arizona. E. L. Bruce described the areas in southwestern On-tario around Red Lake and Woman Lake, another prom-ising gold district. Of special interest was a series of lantern slides showing the use of power-driven boats and of hydroplanes as means of transportation. Within a few years, no doubt; such devices will revolutionize the mining industry and reconnaissance mapping in these relatively inaccessible areas. Much interest was evinced in the paper by J. W. Finch on "Sedimentary Metalliferous Deposits of the Red Beds." It was written as a caution to people at-tempting to mine these deposits. The discussion of the chemical equations presented in the paper brought out the fact that a large amount of study of such ores is necessary before we shall be able to write equations to explain their formation. Especially pertinent were the discussions by David White as to the relation of decay-ing plant tissue to metalliferous deposits and the color of sediments; also the point brought out by T. S. Lover-ing that chemical compounds produced by bacteria may greatly affect the deposition and reorganization of sedi-mentary metalliferous deposits.

The highest R"" values are associated with mosaic textures and outline a therrnal anomaly at the south-center of the studied area. Among the identified clay minerals, illite and chlorite are terrigenous, whereas smectite, kaolinite and corrensite are authigenous and, like the alteration of the OM, are due to the new chemical equilibria resulting from the precipitation of the sulfides."

The Sigma-Lamaque Complex is considered a lode-gold deposit characterized by narrow vein structures, which have been mined historically by underground methods. In addition to the narrow vertical structures, mining also took place on horizontal veins, ?North Dipper? veins and dykes mineralized with sub-horizontal veins and stringers. Over the 60 + years of production, mining took place to a depth of 1.8 km. The upper portion of the deposit was considered all but exhausted, when viewed from an underground mining perspective. The year 1998 is considered a turning point for the Complex when a small open pit was mined at Sigma. The resource evaluation methods used underground were applied to surface mining, which allowed small pits to be mined. The resource evaluation method considered only the narrow vertical structures and was not well adapted to open pit mining. As a consequence, resources were consistently under evaluated. It became clear that a new geological approach was necessary to more accurately define resources (i.e., what was being mined). In order to integrate all characteristics (geometry, mechanics and chronology) of this complex lode-gold deposit, a new geological model was proposed. Due to this new approach, dating to February 2000 and updated in December 2000, the reserves evaluated in the first 180 meters now stand at 15 million tonnes @ 2.61 g/t Au (1,265,350 oz). Those reserves cover an east-west corridor extending 1,500 m by 750 m.

The underground mining evolution for block cave mines in Chile and worldwide has made important strides in the last decades. Nonetheless, reserves determination in the initial stages of these types of projects—mainly for long-term planning—is not studied in as much detail as it should be, especially regarding the impact on the final value of the enterprise. Today, the first estimation of the size of a block cave mine, typically expressed in tons, tends to determine very large footprints and ore bodies. The resulting large-scale mine is obtained by applying the marginal cut-off grade (COG) to determine reserves. Yet, in many cases, it is possible to obtain an equal or higher benefit, extracting fewer reserves in less time, with a smaller active area, which significantly reduces the project’s uncertainty. To explore scenarios obtained by applying a higher marginal COG in the initial phases of the project, the Hill of Value methodology is used to estimate the net present value (NPV) in relation to the production rate and the COG. However, the application of this methodology considers certain simplifications that generate results which are not completely satisfactory in specific cases. This paper suggests an improvement of this method to obtain more reliable results regarding determination of a COG profile that will optimize the NPVof a block-cave project. The methodology was developed and applied in a massive polymetallic deposit with zinc, lead, and silver mineralization, corresponding to a real block caving project. The methodology provides NPV results that differ by approximately 15% in comparison to the real mine plan, while also being considerably simpler and faster to calculate. In summary, the proposed methodology provides a reasonable and fast procedure to estimate higher than marginal COG that increases the NPV of block cave mine projects.

ON the 19th December, 1833, a patent was granted to F. W. Geisenheimer, for smelting iron ore with anthracite. In his claim he says: "Sixthly, though I cannot, and do not, claim am exclusive right of the use of heated air, for any kind of fuel, nevertheless I believe to have a right to claim the use of heated air, applied upon, and in connection with, the said principle and manner discovered by me, to smelt iron ore in blast-furnaces with anthracite coal, by applying a blast of air in such quantity, velocity, and density, or under such pressure, as the compactness, or density, and the continuity of the anthracite requires, as above amply and fully described and illustrated." Dr. Geisenheimer made experiments in smelting iron ore with anthracite at the Valley Furnace, near Pottsville, but he failed to carry out to good practical results the principles enunciated in his patent. In the Journal of the Franklin Institute for February, 1838, a communication was published that was made by Mr. George Crane, of the Yniscedwyn Iron Works, South Wales, to the British Association, in September, 1837. On the smelting of iron with anthracite coal, Mr. Crane states therein, that he began the use of an¬thracite with hot-blast on the 7th February, 1837, in a cupola blast-furnace, 41 feet high, and 10' feet across the boshes ; product, 34 to 36 tons a week. Mr. Crane goes on to say, "It may not be uninteresting to be informed in what matter the idea first occurred to me of applying a heated blast to anthracite coal. The U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a project which addressed objectives concerning irrigation of native plants and inoculation of native plants with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi. The specific irrigation objectives were 1) to demonstrate the performance capabilities of solid-set irrigation for reclaimed mineland conditions, and 2) to demonstrate and evaluate three irrigation concepts under two separate water supply conditions. The VAM inoculations were to assess irrigation benefits in establishing VAM relationships for transplanted native species. Following the seasonal demonstration (May to September 1983) at 3 separate mine sites, conclusions were made that apply to the 6 state Western mining industry. The demonstration sites were located in Montana, Wyoming, and New Mexico. Positive conclusions were reached for 1) the use of soil moisture sampling with or without irrigation, and 2) the selection of solid-set sprinklers as the irrigation method. The conclusions about the irrigation concepts and strategy were mixed, due to the short-term (1 season) nature of the project. No conclusions could be reached for the VAM inoculations because the study time was too short.

At the Cleveland meeting of the Institute, October, 1912, I had occasion to call attention to the general though erroneous impression that the principal mining activities of the United States lie west of the 100th meridian of longitude. Few, I believe, realize that the States east of the Mississippi river, which comprise only 28.8 per cent. of the total area of the United States, exclusive of Alaska, contribute about two-thirds of the total mineral production, computing by values. In 1910 the percentage of the production credited to the Eastern States was 67; in 1911 it was 65. When I have, with becoming modesty, ventured to speak of these comparisons, I have usually been met with the rejoinder, " But you include coal." I surely do, for whereas coal (m petroleum, as natural gas, as limestone) is not in the strictly technical definition of the word, a " mineral," it is legally mineral, is certainly a mineral substance, and contributes by far the largest tonnage and approximately one-third of the total value of all mineral products. The production of coal-mines in 1911 weighed approximately 500,000,000 tons. In 1912 it exceeded that record by nearly, if not quite, 50,000,000 tons. According to H. D. McCaskey, of the U. S. Geological Survey, the total weight of all the metallic ores mined in the United States in 1911 was 105,000,000 tons (a little more than one-fifth that of coal). In 1910 Mr. Lindgren estimated the total weight of all metallic ores at 120,000,000 tons. The products of the quarries, clay-pits, oil-wells, phosphate-mines, and other non-metallic products, taken all together, did not in 1911 weigh in excess of 300,000,000 tons, so that the output of coal exceeds by 25 per cent. the combined tonnage of all other mineral products. Copper refineries are constantly looking for methods to upgrade their plants to reduce refining costs and to improve the purity of their electrolytic cathodes at the same time that the purity of the anodes they refine is being lowered by the rehabilitation of reverberatory furnace smelters to one of the direct smelting processes. The comments given below are based on the answers to the questionnaire returned bf the 36 copper refineries that represent 66% of the western world s refining capacity. Eleven refineries employ some form of uniform weight anade casting, e.g., Outokumpu, Contilanode, Mitsubishi, Lurgi, or Hazelett. This type of anode casting presents the best possibility for improving cathode purity. The cathode press of Phelps Dadge can improve current efficiencies and cathode quality. The press is used on first-run cathodes, after 48-60 hours, on half-cells at a time without interruption of the cell current. One refinery interrupts current for sever.al hours to allow the anode slime to settle before the, cathode pressing. The cathode press is now used at eight refineries. Apart from periodic reverse current (PRC), it is not expected that current densities will be increased. Thirty refineries, using direct current, average 231 amps/M, with a low of 178 and a high of 350. Five refineries use PRC at an average of 338 amps/M, with a low of 290 and a high of 380. Current efficiencies are good at an average of 94%, with a low of 88% and a high of 99% for the 34 refineries that reported. It must be remembered that the cycle efficiency with PRC is about 93%., so that the effective current efficiency with PRC would be only .94 X .93 or 87% However, PRC should be considered seriously for refinery expansions because it can save about 25% on capital costs.

The partial reduction of zinc ferrite to zinc oxide and iron (II, III) oxide can enhance the leaching rate of zinc. Zinc ferrite has often been found as a major component of zinc residues and electric arc furnace dust. The Waelz process is an existing process for zinc ferrite processing, which requires a temperature of more than about 1200 °C to produce Waelz oxide containing ZnO. Since zinc residues have been deemed as a potential way for the extraction of zinc and other critical metals, it is important to analyze the reaction kinetics in the temperature range of interest. This manuscript discusses the chemical kinetics of zinc ferrite reduction by hydrogen gas. Several researchers studied the reduction of zinc ferrite with CO; however, unlike CO, the use of H2 gas as a reductant allows partial reduction of zinc ferrite even at low-temperature range (400–600 °C). Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) experiments were performed in the temperature range of 300–700 °C with 10% and 30% H2, and the data obtained was analyzed using the isoconversional method of kinetic analyses. The standard models used for isoconversional kinetic analysis were chosen from literature and experimental data were fitted to determine the controlling mechanism and calculation of kinetic parameters of reduction of zinc ferrite. The rate of reaction was found to be increasing with an increase in temperature and partial pressure of H2 gas. The reaction could be divided into three stages, where reaction interface contraction was found to be the controlling mechanism at the initial stage of reaction. As the reaction proceeds, product layer thickness increases, and thus, diffusion was found to be the controlling mechanism. Roasting products obtained from TGA experiments were also characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to verify critical morphological details.

This study investigated the operating parameters that affect the kinetic dissolution of copper and cobalt from sulfidic ores. The sulfuric acid concentration, temperature, sodium chloride concentration, particle size range, and leaching time were selected to deduce the kinetic mechanism of the leaching reaction. Other parameters, such as a stirring speed of 250 rpm and the percentage solid 10% w/v, remained constant. The results reveal that an increase in acid concentration enhances the leaching rate of copper and cobalt. Copper and cobalt dissolution was positively affected by the addition of sodium chloride. The highest leaching rates of copper and cobalt were 24.71% and 15.65%, respectively. The chemical control and diffusion control by shrinking core models are well fitted as the kinetic models representing the dissolution of the minerals. The respective activation energies for copper and cobalt dissolution of 10.92 and 31.023 kJ mol− 1 for the chemical control and 18.83 and 37.28 kJ mol− 1 for diffusion reaction control were established from temperature-based experiments.

"IntroductionThe data contained in this paper were collected during the course of an investigation which covered 15 representative coal mines in 6 coal-mining States. The purpose of the investigation was to determine by atmospheric sampling how much dust was raised into the air during the various operations of coal mining, such as undercutting with machines, loading coal by hand, and transporting it from the working face to the surface. The data thus obtained were considered from two angles - namely, the possible physiological effect of inhalation and the explosion hazard of the dust. No attempt will be mode to discuss the former factor in this paper.CONDITIONS OF MININGThe mines in which this investigation was conducted were considered representative, and it is believed that the results obtained will suffice for the average dustiness encountered in most coal mines. .All of the coal mined was bituminous, from beds 30 to 120 inches thick. Only the ordinary room-and-pillar system of mining was employed. Daily production ranged from approximately 700 to 1500 tons and the men employed from 150 to 450. Coal was undercut by short-wall mining machines in all mines, with the exception of one in which pick mining was employed. Loading at the face was done by miners; none of the mines used mechanical loaders. Electric drills, both for brushing roof and for shooting coal, were commonly used although some roof work was done with jack-hammers and a. little of both with augers. Coal was hauled by motor, mule, or rope power in end-gate cars with capacities ranging from 1600 to 3600 pounds. With few exceptions, coal was won at the face by dry methods - that is to say, no water was employed fox wetting down the dust either during undercutting, loading, or transportation."

"The formation of splash in pyrometallurgical operations that involve the injection of gases into a liquid has been the subject of a number of studies over the last few decades. Given the complexity of the phenomena, there have been some advances in understanding the microscale formation of splash but the ability to accurately predict the amount and character of the splash formed is still in its infancy. First, the macroscale mechanisms for splash formation is very varied. Second, the timescales for splash formation are very small, usually less than 100 milliseconds, making experiments elucidating the formation of splash difficult and costly. Work at the GKW CRC has shown that the microscale mechanism of splash formation is primarily is due to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Substantial progress has been made in understanding the behaviour of large bubbles in effecting splash formation and a simple model has been developed to estimate the behaviour of splash formed from a top submerged lance. Direct numerical computation of splash formation using the GKMAC codes developed at the Centre has been successful in simulating the impact of liquid drops onto a liquid bath.IntroductionInjection of gases into melts is used in the metallurgical industry to promote mixing to ensure acceptable heat and mass transfer rates, conveying solids for alloying, provide efficient contact for gas-melt reactions, and as a reactant. High gas injection rates bring about the formation of splash and slop. Extensive splash formation leads to loss of valuable product, creation of safety hazards, formation of accretion on refractory lining and exhaust ducts, and increased load on dust removal equipment. Many operators and researchers have claimed that splash formation is the limiting factor in many gas injected processes. The problems listed above lead to loss of production and increased maintenance, adding to the cost of processing base metals. Over the last five years, the GKW CRC has been studying the formation of splash from a number of sources. They include the impingment of drops on liquids[ l·2.31, slopping of bath liquidI4.51, breakup of gas bubbles at the liquid-gas interfacel61, shearing of liquids by gases[7·81, and impact of packets of fluids on solidsl81. Theoretically, the extreme deformation of fluid shape and the influence of surface tension makes the simulation of flow resulting from only a drop impacting on a liquid surface a very challenging computational fluid dynamics problem. Recently, we have been successful in simulating the formation of the Rayleigh jet resulting from a drop impact showing the effect of drop Froude number on the shape of the Rayleigh jet."

Last year in the US alone, about 425 Mt (468 million st) of minerals and coal were beneficiated by froth flotation. This number indicates that from 1983 there was a 10% increase in tonnage of min¬erals and coal beneficiated by the indus¬try. A significant improvement was seen in the tonnage processed by the nonferrous minerals and coal industries. BP Minerals America installed 85 m; (3000 cu ft) flotation cells at the Bing¬ham Canyon mine and concentrator. The new flotation circuit has fewer than 100 cells compared to 2000 flotation cells used in the old plant (Mining Engi¬neering, November 1988). Column flotation use on a commer¬cial scale continues to expand as seen from the interest expressed at the Col¬umn Flotation Symposium (Column Flotation '88). The Magma Copper Co., San Manuel Division replaced all con¬ventional cells with 1.8 x 12 m (6 x 40 ft) column flotation cells for copper con¬centrate cleaning. Also, 1220 mm and 760 mm-diam (48 in. and 30 in.-diam) column cells are operating at the plant in the molybdenum circuit. A commercial Diester Flotaire col¬umn cell for fine coal recovery was installed at the United Coal Wellmore No. 20 plant. The 36.8 m3 (1300 cu ft) cell recovers 13.6 to 18 t/h (15 to 20 stph) of -590 gm (-28 mesh) coal. A similar unit has been installed at Tanoma Mining Co. in Pennsylvania. Various modifications of the column cells are being designed around the world. Jameson (Mining and Metal¬lurgy, 1988) described a new concept whereby the feed and air stream mixture is discharged into a cylindrical column of about 1.2 m (4 ft) height. Recovery and grade of nonferrous minerals have been reported to be better than that in a four-stage conventional flotation clean¬ing circuit. Flotation reagents American Cyanamid and Dow Chemical continued development of a new generation of sulfide collectors. A general feeling is development of new sulfide collectors has not kept up with flotation technology. Additionally, joint efforts between industry and chemical suppliers will likely be necessary to realize the economic benefits of the new technologies, since new chemistries respond differently compared to the conventional collectors. Flocculant development in recent years has been evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Rothenborg reported on development of a new flocculant family (a hydroxymated polyacrylamide desig¬nated S-6703) that has shown consider¬able promise in red mud clarification. Plant testing showed that this new floc¬culant could replace starch and poly¬acrylate and provide significantly higher overflow clarity. Barol Kami (Siirak) and Cleveland¬Cliffs (Hancock) reported development of an amphoteric apatite collector (ATRAC 873) that was used in Tilden's silica flotation process to increase apatite rejection. The collector was engineered for the particular flotation conditions in the complex Tilden process. Significant plant testing with ATRAC 873 showed that this reagent gave significantly in¬creased apatite rejection without any effect on silica flotation effectiveness or selectivity. Electrostatic separation Electrostatic separation is now em¬ployed in the precious metals mining industry to recover gold and silver grills from crushed slag. The installation at Paradise Peak has prompted other op¬erators to consider this application. In another development, attractive potentials for treating very fine minerals (-45 µm or -325 mesh) are being devel¬oped by Advanced Energy Dynamics and by the Department of Energy. Demonstration tests using triboelectric charging/electrostatic separation have been successful on a variety of minerals as well as coal. Magnetic separation Developments in magnetic separa¬tion have transpired on a production scale. Superconducting, high gradient magnetic separation has gained accep¬tance with the successful startup of a second unit treating kaolin at J.M. Huber Corp. This liquid-helium-cooled mag¬net generates 2.0 tesla in a 3-m-diam (120-in.-diam) bore with no power con¬sumption. Wet, high-intensity magnetic separation has been applied to sulfide mineral separations both domestically and abroad. These continuous type of separators are effective in removing residual chalcopyrite and sphalerite from other base metal sulfide concentrates. Separators using high energy rare earth permanent magnets are continu¬ally increasing. Now offered as both drum and roll type, these units are be¬coming a staple in the processing of industrial minerals. Tests using rare earth magnets strategically placed on a spiral concentrator have demonstrated the enhanced recovery of heavy miner¬als such as ilmenite. Classification Although no major technology break¬throughs in classification appear immi¬nent, there is an increasing need for more efficient and cost-effective meth¬ods to make size separations. This paper describes an experimental method for the monitoring of diesel-generated exhaust gas pollutants in a dead-ended drift for the purpose of assessing the effect of control approaches. Experiments were conducted to determine the relative merits of these ventilation configurations: no auxiliary ventilation, induction ventilation at the entrance to the drift, and ventilation of the dead-ended drift with positive displacement tubing. The drift used in this experimental work was approximately 105 ft. (32.0 mf long and slightly downsloping, with an average height and width of 8 ft. (2.4 m) and 28 ft. (8.5 m1 , respectively. The data were gathered for assessing these ventilation methods and for gathering data to support a computer model of the dispersion and mixing processes. For this drift, it was found that ventilation with positive displacement tubing provided the best removal of diesel-generated pollutants. Induction ventilation appeared to be the least effective of the three methods examined. A comparison was also made between personal monitoring and area monitoring. Results of this analysis showed that in regions of high concentration gradients, it was not possible to get good agreement between point sampling and personal monitoring. In well-mixed areas, good agreement between the two methods of monitoring was obtained.

The number of petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline during 1954, and according to the Bureau of Mines annual survey there were 326 refineries with a total daily throughput capacity of 8,420,630 barrels, as of January 1, 1955. The increase in capacity for the year was 413,733 barrels daily, while the number of refineries declined 11. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1954 from 23,759 barrels daily to 25,830. Breaking down the crude-oil capacity increase, by refining districts; 32 percent was installed at refin¬eries located in the Texas Gulf Coast district, 25 percent in the East Coast district, and 13 percent in both the Louisiana Gulf Coast and the California districts. The Appalachian No. 1, Texas Inland, and New Mexico refining districts reported declines in capacity during the year. Additional crude-oil capacity under construction, January 1, 1955, totaled 146,800 barrels daily. Included in this total are 4 new refineries, 1 each in California, Minnesota, New Mexico, and Washington. In addition to the' new facilities, equipment producing 1.49,550 barrels daily is being replaced.

THE pole figure interpretation in a recent paper' on the torsion texture of copper was questioned in discussion,2 nd a simpler alternative interpretation was proposed. In the hope of reaching a positive decision in favor of one or the other, further studies were undertaken with 70-30 brass and Armco iron. This additional work has not answered all the questions about torsion textures, but the new pole figures do offer support for the original interpretation and show that the texture is more complicated than the alternative suggests. From the previous paper,' the appropriate method of describing the texture in a twisted bar is known to be a pole figure plotted on a plane tangent to the surface of the bar. The axes of the pole figure are chosen to coincide with directions in the tangent plane which are parallel and at right angles to the bar axis (the longitudinal direction, L.D., and the transverse direction, T.D.), for these directions define symmetry axes of the texture. Therefore any ideal orientation that might be selected to represent the texture gives the crystallographic plane parallel to the tangent plane and the crystallographic direction parallel to the axis of the torsion specimen. A unique texture was assumed in the original interpretation, and the four ideal orientations, (112) [111], (111) [112], (110) [001], and (112) [131], were used in its description. Of the four orientations, the first three provide possible slip directions along the direction labeled T.D. in the pole figure, which is one of maximum shear stress in a specimen being twisted. The alternative, however, simply considered the texture to be made up of two components, one a [Ill] alignment along the specimen axis with a random orientation about the axis as in the wire texture, and the other a superimposed orientation (110) [0011. Experimental evidence for this simpler interpretation was derived from two observations: 1—twisting did not alter the orientation of a single-crystal torsion specimen of a brass in which an octahedral plane was perpendicular (and a [Ill] direction parallel) to the axis, and 2—deformation bands with approximately the (110) [001] orientation were seen to develop in the crystal during the test. The new pole figures were obtained with a brass and an iron torsion specimen of 3/4 and 1 in. gage length diameter, respectively. After annealing, polishing, and twisting, seven rods, about 0.030 in. in diameter and with different orientations, were prepared from material near the surface of each specimen; these were required for the method of constructing pole figures by using a Geiger counter as developed by Norton.5 Since the shear strain gradient in plastic torsion is linear, it was readily computed that the material supplying the brass rods had been subjected to a shear strain of about 3.2, and that supplying the iron rods had received a shear strain of about 2. All details concerning specimen design, testing procedure, rod preparation, and use of the Norton technique can be found in ref. 1. Only this procedure was followed in working out the (111) and (100) pole figures for brass, Figs. 1 and 2. However, X-ray photograms were also involved in the construction of the (110) pole figure for Armco iron, Fig. 3. The photograms were made according to the conventional transmission diffraction technique using a small sheet taken parallel to the specimen surface and etched to a thickness of about 0.0025 in. They were especially important in locating the boundaries
