ETHIOPIA, the first country to be liberated from Axis domination, has recovered remarkably from the ravages of occupation and war. Mineral production has contributed significantly towards this recovery, as it has provided a means of obtaining foreign exchange and has given employment to hundreds of workmen whose maintenance otherwise would have presented a problem. Although primarily an agricultural country, never with a large mineral production, Ethiopia has within its borders a variety of minerals, both precious metals and nonmetallics. Some of these are important to the country as a national asset and others contribute greatly to local economy and can be expected to do so even to a greater extent in the future1 (Fig I). PHYSIOGRAPHY AND GEOLOGY The Empire of Ethiopia is essentially a mountainous and volcanic country, in northeast Africa, situated principally between latitude 4° and I5°N and longitude 34° and 44°E. It is bounded on the north by Eritrea, on the northeast by French Somaliland, on the southeast by Italian Somaliland, on the south by Kenya Colony, and on the west by Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. These European possessions thus completely surround the country. Its access to the Red Sea is through Eritrea; to the Gulf of Aden, through French or British Somaliland; and, to the Indian Ocean, via Italian Somaliland. These routes range in length from 40 to 250 miles. Ethiopia has an area of approximately 350,000 square miles, with a width from north to south of 625 miles, and a maximum length from east to west, along latitude 8°N, of about 875 miles. Physiographically the country is characterized by two very extensive sub-tabular plateaus: the Ethiopian Plateau to the northwest and the Somaliland Plateau to the southeast, separated by a long tectonic graben-the Rift Valley of the Galla Lakes and Danakil. The Ethiopian Plateau, deeply cut and notched by the drainage, slopes in a general northwest direction toward the Sudanese Plains and the valley of the Nile; the Somaliland Plateau slopes to the southeast, toward the Indian Ocean. The valley of the Galla Lakes and its extension to the northeast-the Awash River Valley, separates the plateaus, from Lake Rudolph to Danakil. This depression which constitutes a continuation or ramification of the Great Rift Valley of Central Africa joins in turn the trough of the Gulf of Aden and the Danakil-Eritrean Rift, continuations of the Red Sea and the Jordan Valley. The general basement of Ethiopia is made up of very old rocks, usually considered as Archaen.2 These rocks are represented by the metamorphic crystallines, such as gneisses, different kinds of schists, included lenses of crystalline limestone, and massive intrusives such as granites, diorites, and syenites, all cut by

The development of an expanded cement product represents a major advance in the technology of roof control systems. Such a product is gaining recognition as a valuable tool in today's cost- conscious coal mines. The National Coal Board's Bretby Research Lab, in conjunction with Polement Ltd., developed the first lightweight cement for use in the mines of the United Kingdom. The product, Aqualight, is a low-density (about 12.5 PCF) cement with a typical compressive strength of about 19 p.s.i. The final product increases in volume by approximately 15 times its dry powder volume. Aqualight gels in about 2 minutes, becomes self-supporting in 15 minutes, and fully cur& in 24 hours. When subjected to a load, the "cells" within its bubble structure collapse so that the product gains in density and compressive strength while retaining its integrity. Traditional methods to contain and support roof fall cavities through cribbing and blocking are both dangerous and labor-intensive. Aqualight represents a significant advantage over such traditional methods. It is non-toxic, non-cmbustible, and very easy to install. Aqualight can be pumped to the worksite from re- mote locations (as much as 600 feet), thereby reducing danger to men and equipment. Addition- ally, the strength of the cured product can be varied by adjusting the expansion ratio and resulting density. A compressive strength of 150 p.s.i. can be obtained in this manner. Although primarily designed to fill cavities resulting from roof falls. Aqualight has found a wide range of applications in mining industries around the world. In addition to cavity- filling, Aqualight has been used for ventilation stoppings, fire stoppings and emergency fire control, backfilling between arches and the roof and ribs, and backfilling of old workings. Since its recent introduction into the United States. Aqualight has been used by MICON SER- VICES, INC. to fill several roof fall cavities along headgate entries. In all cases, the cavities were contained and the longwall moved through without problems. Roof Pall cavities along main haulage entries and at shaft/slope bottoms have been successfully filled. MICON has also installed Aqualight as backfill material around arches. A current major project is the installation of trial ventilation seals using Aqualight as an alternative to traditional block and mortar construction. Pending MSHA approval, MICON anticipates the use of Aqualight in the construction of both ventilation seals and stoppings. In addition to new construction, Aqualight can be employed to repair stoppings damaged by roof convergence and floor heave. In labor savings alone, this is very attractive for remote stopping repair. Among the many other uses of Aqualight is the backfilling of old auger holes, which will support the highwall and allow access to coal re- serves which are presently sterilized.

To overcome the difficulty of accurately judging the load state of a wet ball mill during the grinding process, a method of mill load identification based on the singular value entropy of the modified ensemble empirical mode decomposition (MEEMD) and a probabilistic neural network (PNN) classifier is proposed. First, the MEEMD algorithm is used to decompose the vibration signals recorded under different load states to obtain the intrinsic mode components, and a correlation coefficient threshold is used to select the sensitive mode components that characterize the state of the original signal. Second, singular value decomposition is used to obtain the singular value entropy. Finally, the load state of the wet ball mill is judged based on the magnitude of the singular value entropy. A characteristic mill load vector is constructed from the singular value entropies of the cylinder vibration signals recorded under different load conditions and is used as the input to a PNN, which then outputs the predicted ball mill load state; in this way, a load state identification model is established. Grinding experiments are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, showing that the method can accurately identify the load state of a wet ball mill. ()

Recent developments in mechanizing longwall it mining in Europe have aroused considerable interest among American coal-mine operators because this method provides an opportunity to improve safety, production, efficiency, and recovery. The success of longwall mining in Europe has depended to a large degree on development of effective roof-control systems. One of the major contributing factors in designing these systems is development off improved supports, which combine high load-bearing capacities with controlled yield characteristics, to use in the face areas. Other factors that relate to successful longwall mining involve knowledge of the structural properties of the strata above end below the coal bed being mined, movements of these strata induced by mining, and effects of the strata movements on the strata itself, as well as on the support system used. Extensive studies of the above factors relating to long-wall mining have been made in coal-mining countries abroad, and corresponding studies (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)3/ of room-and-pillar operations have been made in this country. Although descriptions and results of experiments of mechanized longwall operations in the United States have been published (6, 7, 8), this is the first instrumented study of roof behavior on a longwall operation. In view of the possible widespread application of this method of mining to American coal mines, where underground mining conditions are different from those found in European mines, an investigation was conducted at a mechanized longwall operation inn the Lancashire No. 15 mine, Barnes & Tucker Co., Cambric County, Bakerton, Pa., to study the factors that affect roof control. This report describes this investigation and discusses the results. The Institute was founded in 1894 as the Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa. In 1904 it was reconstituted as the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa and in 1956 it became the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The objects of the Institute are to advance the science and practice of mining and metallurgy, to afford opportunities for the interchange and recording of knowledge of mining and metallurgy and to ensure high standards of professional conduct and competence. Membership benefits include monthly issues of the Journal of the Institute, monthly General Meetings at which papers are read, symposia, excursions to mining and industrial concerns and the use of club facilities at Kelvin House. Technical journals received on an exchange basis are available to members at the Johannesburg Public Library. The current membership of the Institute is over 1,600. Membership applications are accepted from suitably qualified persons and the requirements for entrance to the various grades of membership are summarised below. Fellows shall not be less than 30 years of age, shall be university graduates in pure or applied science or shall produce evidence to the satisfaction of the Council that they have successfully completed a co-ordinated course of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution deemed by the Council to be of equivalent status. Members shall have been employed in senior technical positions in important mining or metallurgical undertakings for at least five years or they shall have practised as mining or metallurgical consultants for at least five years. They may remain Students until they have obtained the necessary qualifications for transfer to a higher grade of membership, but not after the end of the Institute's financial year in which they attain the age of 28 (twenty-eight) years. They shall then transfer to a higher grade to retain membership of the Institute. The Council may relax the provisions of this clause in such cases as it considers appropriate. 6784. Barnes, V. L., and Romberg, Frederick. Gravity and Magnetic Observations on Iron Mountain Magnetite Deposit, Llano County, Tex. Geophysics, Menasha, Wis., vol. 8, No. 1, 1943, pp. 32-45. An outcrop of magnetite in the Central Mineral region of Texas is explored experimentally with a dip needle and a gravity meter. Two anomalies are observed, one due to the outcropping body and one probably due to a previously unknown body close to the outcrop. The possible attitudes of the bodies are discussed, and their masses and probable dimensions are computed from the gravitational observations. - Author's abstract.

The free-milling ore characteristics of the Fort Knox gold deposit are ideal for studying gold and silver behaviors in various processing circuits without serious interference of sulfide minerals and other refractory factors. A galvanic effect leads to faster silver dissolution than gold dissolution and, as a result, the Au/Ag solution concentration ratio increases through the leach circuit. In the CIP circuit, Au adsorption is more effective than Ag adsorption. The Au/Ag solution concentration ratio decreases from 10.0 to 1.0 as the slurry advances from CIP tank #1 to CIP tank #5, while Au/Ag ratio in the carbon increases from 3.2 to 15.3, as the carbon advances from CIP tank #5 to CIP tank #1. Silver is stripped more effectively than gold from the loaded carbon. The Au/Ag ratio in solution reaches 2.0 in the first 75,700 L of strip solution that pass through the loaded carbon; as the stripping process continues, the Au/Ag ratio in the strip solution increases. In the electrowinning circuit, the Au/Ag ratio in the spent electrowinning solution is significantly lower than that in the electrowinning feed, indicating that Au is more rapidly deposited onto the cathode than Ag.

By Sims Some two years ago we began investigating low coke button bituminous coal for use at our Bound Brook, New Jersey plant as a replacement for anthracite. Since August, 1957 the plant has been operating continously on this coal with the exception of a new 200,000#/hr, cyclone boiler. This study was motivated not from our desire to conduct combustion research, but for the sole purpose of reducing our steam costs, The indications were that the economics were greatly in favor of the use of the bituminous coal. The attempts to reduce the costs have developed some knowledge that has enabled this program to succeed reasonably well as will be discussed later by Mr. Ludden. The production of steam size anthracite is dependent upon either the reclamation of old culm banks or the breakage in the production of the domestic sizes. The anthracite industry has not as yet been able to cut, its mining costs to the point where the production of steam sizes has become a profitable business. This has resulted in two basic problems: (1) A constantly rising price in an attempt to have those sizes carry their share of the cost and, (2) Periodic shortages of supply when the demand is good but the market price prohibits the mining of anthracite to produce those sizes only, These conditions have made the long range forecast appear as though the price would go even higher and/or the supply at times be critically short.

The solubility of graphite in CaO-S2O2-Al,O3 slags was measured by equilibrating slag samples with graphite crucibles and CO gas. Carbon contents as high as 2 ut pct were obtained in CaO-saturated, CaO-A1,O3 slags, and 1.3 wt pct in slags of the composition CaO.Si0,. Although the observed conditions for Sic formation were in agreement with those predicted from thermodynamic data, CaC, was found to form at a lower temperature than predicted frotn thermodynamic data. From measurements of the equilibrium carbon content as a function of CO Partial pressure, it was found that carbide ions dissolve in CaO-A12O3 melts with a valence of minus two. The carbon content increased with CaO concentration in Ca0-Al,O3 melts and increased with SiO, content along the CaO'AlO3-CaOSi0 join in the ternary system. When solid CaC2 was added to CaO-A12O3 and CaO-SiO2-A12O3 slags, it was found that one of the oxides in the slag was reduced by the carbide (Al2O3 in the forrner and SiOz in the latter). In electric furnace steelmaking, a double-slag practice is frequently used to meet alloy specifications. Initially a flush slag, which is oxidizing in nature, is used to remove phosphorus and carbon from the steel bath. Later in the refining period, the flush slag is replaced by a highly reducing carbidic slag. When calcium carbide is formed in or added to a finishing slag, the slag is effective as a desulfurizing agent and also permits alloying elements such as chromium, vanadium, and tungsten to be added to the slag in the form of oxides. The oxides are readily reduced by calcium carbide, thereby minimizing the use of expensive ferroalloys. More work has been done on the thermodynamics of silicon carbide in slags than on calcium carbide. Baird and alor' and Kay and alor' determined the free energy of formation of Sic by measuring the partial pressure of CO in equilibrium with solid silica, silicon carbide, and graphite. Using a similar technique, they determined SiOz activities in CaO-SiOz and Ca0-Si0,-A1203 slags. Rein and chipman3 also determined the free energy of formation of Sic using slag-metal equilibrium measurements. A literature survey has uncovered only one experimental study of the behavior of CaC, in slag systems. Shanahan and cooke4 report the results of some preliminary experiments on the solubility and stability of CaC, in a CaO-A1,03 and a Ca0-Si0-A1,03 slag at a temperature of about 1500". The carbon solubility as CaC, in a slag containing 50 pct CaO and 50 pct A1203 was reported to be 0.6 pct. They also review earlier work on the binary CaO-CaC, system. A eutectic exists in this system, but various investigators disagree on the eutectic temperature and composition. eal has given an explanation for carbide furnace erruptions in terms of the thermodynamic properties of CaC,; his analysis is not based on experimental data, but on compiled data for the free energies of formation of CaC, and CO.' , These data for steel-making temperatures are all extrapolated from the results of low-temperature measurements. In the experiments described in this paper, slag samples were equilibrated with graphite crucibles and with mixtures of CO and argon or with CO gas at 1 atm total pressure for measurement of the carbon solubility. Most of the work was done on Ca0-A1203 binary slags, although in some experiments CaO-SiO, and Ca0-Si0,-A1,03 slags were used. EXPERIMENTAL Slag samples of the desired composition for the solubility measurements were obtained by blending pre-fused master slags. The master slags were prepared by fusing mixtures of reagent-grade CaC03 with either A1,03 or Si0, in a graphite crucible. In June 1929 the Bureau of Mines issued a 13-page Information Circular entitled "Mineral wool." This was one of the first publications to present to the public some technical aspects of the mineral-wool industry. Since that time several articles have appeared on the subject in the technical press as well as publications by State organizations. Inquiries for information on mineral wool have continued to be received by the Bureau of Mines in large numbers, and in 1935 it was decided, with the cooperation of the is industry, to make a field survey of the plants then producing and to collect therefrom technical data to be compiled in a paper for public distribution. As a first step, a brief questionnaire was mailed to the known producers asking if they would cooperate for publication. Favorable replies were received from of percent of the manufacturers, and the field work was started. As the study progressed and tie number of plants visited grew, it became more and more apparent that the industry had made rapid strides in technical operation and control of their product, as well as in increasing production during the mast decade.

R. HATCH, Garfield, Utah.-The object of the meeting, I believe, is to determine the proper chemical composition to insure long wear of a ball in a mill, This might also apply to rods. I feel that there is only one way of determining accurately the wearing qualities of balls in mills, and that is by actually wearing out 400 or 500 tons of different kinds of balls. Two things add to the wearing qualities of a ball: (1) the tenacity, with which the particular particles of iron or steel are cemented together; (2) the individual hardness of each particle. My experience is that a ball that has a Brinell of 550 to 650 will give comparatively long life. There is considerable difference of opinion as to the best steel and iron alloys necessary to produce a satisfactory grinding ball. Some favor chrome, some manganese and some nickel. Personally, I believe cast iron alloyed with chrome makes the best ball for small sizes; for large sizes (3 1/2 in. and up) steel alloyed with manganese is best. L. 0. HOWARD, Pullman, Wash.-How would this method apply to lining? A. KissocK, New York, N. Y.-I do not subscribe to that exactly. As I am connected with the Climax Molybdenum Co. you would hardly expect me to. We have been much interested in trying to work out this grinding-ball problem and have spent a great deal of thought and effort on it. As we are associated with the American Metal Co. and have a number of properties of our own, we are in position to try our ideas on ourselves first. We have tried different compositions, but have not done anything very remarkable with them yet, except that we have been able to say that the combination of chrome and molybdenum has given the best wearing ball. Mr. Hatch feels that iron is the best medium for grinding, but since toughness as well as hardness is a factor in wearability we feel that a well made steel is better for this purpose. Another difficulty with cast, or chilled, iron is lack of uniformity from day to day or from heat to heat and the impossibility of producing balls free from blow or shrinkage holes which materially affect their life. If cast iron is made hard it becomes brittle and lacks stretch or toughness. This prevents its use in the larger sizes, as breakage is a serious handicap to efficiency. We have tried hard and brittle balls and softer but very tough balls and have proved that maximum hardness, with sufficient toughness to prevent breakage, is the most important factor in resistance of a steel to abrasion. It is well known that chromium is one of the best hardening agencies for either iron or steel, and molybdenum is recognized as an element capable of introducing toughness. In other words, the proper combination of chromium and molybdenum permits unusual hardness with still sufficient toughness to stand up under severest impact. It is yet too early to give any actual mill results of this new combination and though we are proving our ideas at our own properties we have to depend on others to help us make the data more general and more worth while and would like to get some tests

"Exposure to airborne dust in coal mines has caused respiratory disease in coal miners. The causal agent in these diseases remains unknown, although the minerals found in and around the coal seam have been implicated. Toxicological studies designed to establish the effect of different mineral combinations and concentrations are lacking because the mineral content of coal mine dust has not been defined. This paper reports the initial results of a study done to characterize the mineral content of the coal mine dust found in a mine in the Upper Freepott seam in Northern West Virginia. Coal mine dust samples were collected using 4- stage cassette impactors at nine locations in the mine. The samples were analyzed by an x-ray microdiffraction film technique supplemented by energy dispersive scanning electron microscopy. Primary size modes of about 17 to 20 micrometers from the samples collected at the haulageway and the returnside of the continuous miner were found. From the returnside of the roof bolter samples, a primary size mode of 12to15 micrometers was measured. The minerals found in high percentages were illite, kaolinite, quartz, and calcite. The distribution of minerals in inter· and intra- location samples showed wide variations. Trends in these variations are presented. Stobbe, T. J.; Plummer, R. W.; Kim, H.; Jones. W.: Characterization of coal mine dust. Appl. Ind. Hyg. 2:95· 100; 1986. IntroductionDisease-associated dusts in coal mine environments continue to afflict miners in today's modern mines. The relationship between exposure to coal mine dust and the development of various respiratory diseases has been well recognized; however, the reasons for variation in occurrence of these diseases among miners in different geographic areas,(1) rank of coal seams,(2-3) and jobs (4) remain uncertain. Several papers have reported on the causal agent in the development of these diseases. Davis (5) found that the percentage of the non-coal minerals present in the lungs of deceased miners increased as the level oi pneumoconiosis became more severe. Reisner (6) reported that cell damage caused by coal mine dust increases with the mineral and quartz content of the dust and with the geo· logical age and rank of the coals. Two studies, investigating the in vitro effects of mineral dusts. reported by Seemayer and Manojlovic (7) also obtained positive correlation between cytotoxicity and the mineral content of coal mine dust. Gormly (8) postulated that destruction of macrophages by certain mineral dusts is the first step in the development of pneumoconiosis. In 1980, Adamis and Timar (9) reported that quartz. sandstone, slate. respirable colliery dust. bentonite, illite, and some kaolins had cytotoxic effects on rat peritoneal macrophages""in vitro."" Walton,(10) however, reported that the presence of high clay, illite, and kaolin mineral exposures reversed the hazards associated with increasing quartz exposures. This finding was supported by Le Bouffant and coworkers.(11) They reported that illite present in coal mine dust strongly inhibited the pathogenic effects of quartz while kaolin had a weaker inhibitory effect."

Gentlemen of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.—As you well know an application is about to be made to Congress, by the American Society of Civil Engineers, for the appointment of a cornmission composed of persons skilled in the production and use of iron, steel, and other structural materials, whose duty it shall be to test the strength, elasticity, and other quatities of such materials ; not simply the substances used as such, but the members of large structures composed of such materials, of the forms and sizes in which they are actually used. As I understand, the papers that will be read here to-night will have for their object to show the necessity for such tests, and therefore the necessity for the commission asked for. As the representative of the Society of Civil Engineers, I have to thank you, gentlemen of the Mining Engineers, for the great zeal with which yon have taken up this subject, and seconded the efforts of the Civil Engineers; or, perhaps I ought rather to say, initiated the efforts to get a suitable commission appointed to obtain most vitally important information which it is admitted on all hands we do not now possess. In drawing up the memorial to Congress, in connection with some of the ablest and best informed of our Society, and in all the discossions on the subject, I have been struck with the emphasis with which the confession is made, that so little is known of the strength of the larger-sized members constantly used in building structures of the magnitude which the present requirements of the country now demand. I presume the remarks made to-night will bring this out very prominently. This is no disgrace, for with the means here-

This section contains a summary of our investigation of the soil conditions (type, porosity, moisture content, etc.) at the two sites (Lanse and Kato, Pennsylvania) selected for field testing of latex as a soil sealant. Other natural conditions such as rainfall, frostline, depth of the water table, etc., were also measured and recorded for possible later use in assessing the effect of the latex seal on the total environment. The numbered sites referred to throughout this report are shown on the maps of the Lanse and Kato sites (Figures 1 and 2). KA, RB and KC are positions at the Kato site - all other numbered positions refer to the Lanse site. Two other terms used throughout the report which should be explained are “horizon” and "profile". These are synonymous terms for soil layer, A horizon (or A profile) referring to topsoil and B horizon (or B profile) referring to subsoil. The properties that control the flow of water through the soil are of special interest because these will also govern the passage of a sealant into and through the soil. Normally the particle size distribution is a good measure of soil permeability, which is directly proportional to sand content and inversely proportional to silt and/or clay content. Tables I1 and I11 show the percentages of gravel or stones, sand, silt and clay of Lanse and Kato soil samples. According to the United States Department of Agriculture classification, the gravel is ,ignored and the residue separated into sand, silt, and clay fractions. Figures 4 and 5 indicate by means of the USDk soil texture triangle that the variability of composition of Lanse soil ranges from sandy loam in the creekbed to clay loam. The variation is even greater among soil samples from Kato. Porosity of soil, also known as percent voids, is another indication of how readily water will travel through soils. Soil density usually increases and porosity decreases with depth, and as expected, the porosity of the top soil at Kato, a forest, is exceptionally porous and open (see Table IV) The pore diameter and length of soil capillaries is extremely variable, and its distribution in the field is impossible to determine. In addition to the capillaries, soil also contains many macro cracks, crevices, and passages around stones and roots. All these affect the flow rate of water through soil. Poiseuille's law states that the rate of flow of a liquid through a narrow tube is proportional to the 4th power of the radius of the tube. Pore size normally decreases with depth and in soil containing appreciable amounts of silt and clay this is especially true. Thus, deeper soils should be less permeable and such was the case at Lanse and Kato.

Just an hour drive down MD 301 from National Harbor, construction to replace the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial/Senator Thomas ‘Mac’ Middleton Bridge (HNB) began in spring of 2020. The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) contracted with Skanska-Corman-McLean (SCM) to deliver a new US 301 bridge spanning 1.9 miles from Maryland to Virginia over the Potomac River aiming to improve capacity, safety, and access of the roadway. The project area presented a geotechnical design challenge due to the installation of new bridge foundations in the problematic soils of the Atlantic Coastal Plain alluvial deposits. With the existing bridge remaining in service during construction, and the site’s logistical constraints placing new pile driving operations near existing abutments and piers, a complex instrumentation and monitoring plan was developed to ensure public safety throughout the project. This paper discusses the geological conditions of the project area, the collaborative approach of various design team members to develop an appropriate monitoring plan utilizing various instrumentation, an understanding of baseline conditional movements of the existing bridge, and impact response of adjacent construction activity to help deliver effective new bridge foundations while protecting the old ones.

The Rönnskär smelter has wide experience in the field of recycling of non-ferrous metals. Today, smelting and refining from primary and secondary raw materials are integrated in a complex flow sheet. Boliden operates a lead flash smelter, a lead refinery, a copper smelter and refinery, a sulphuric acid and sulphur dioxide plant, a slag fuming plant and precious metal plant at its Rönnskär smelter in the North of Sweden. The Business Area Smelter Operations also incorporates Boliden Bergsöe, Sweden's lead-acid battery recycler, and Norzink, Norway, where recycled zinc accounts for more than 20% of it's production. Raw materials for the Rönnskär smelter include concentrates, ashes, slags, metallic scrap, electronic scrap and electric arc furnace (EAF) steel-making dust. This paper briefly describes current operations and illustrates current measures to improve productivity. Limits to recycling as experienced by a non-ferrous smelter are, illustrated. The deportment of critical elements contained in raw materials is also discussed.

In order to provide a clear picture of the development of the sink-and-float process of concentration as applied to the iron ores of Minnesota, a few pertinent facts should be brought out concerning the ores and the products of concentration. Iron ore is primarily a cheap commodity handled in immense quantities. The price of iron ore at present, based on a natural iron content of 51.5 per cent, varies from $2.55 to $2.70 per gross ton f.0.b. cars at the mine or washing plant in Minnesota. Last year 92,000,000 gross tons were shipped from the Lake Superior district (Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin) to the furnaces. Concentrated iron ores have no greater value per unit of iron content than ores that can be mined and shipped direct from the shafts or open pits. For years only the higher grades of concentrating ores could be treated and sold in competition with the immense reserves of direct shipping ore available. These higher-grade "straight wash" ores required only the simplest treatment; namely, the washing out of fine sand from coarse ore particles. As the exhaustion of the " straight wash " ore is reached, rock is found replacing part of this sand, and the ore no longer responds to the former sizing treatment. Substantial tonnages of this marginal (jig ore) remained to be treated. Because of the limitations placed on concentrates by the furnaces—namely, low price of product and minimum amount of fines—iron-ore concentration oil has been and must continue to be a one-pass process. Only an increase in price or a change in structure of concentrates allowed by the ore consumer will encourage departure from this practice. Faced with the necessity of handling large tonnages, with the limitations mentioned, iron-ore research men have found their search for new and more efficient methods of treatment seriously handicapped and removed from the field of fine crushing. Sink-and-float treatment appeared to offer the best field in coarse concentration and has been proved by several plants to be well adapted to our problem. The use of ferrosilicon as a medium solid was decided upon. In our present practice, the ferrosilicon metal, carrying about 83 per cent iron, 15 per cent silicon and 2 per cent carbon and nonmagnetics, is crushed to pass 65 mesh and used without further sizing. When mixed with water the specific gravity of the medium may be controlled to within 0.02 per cent above or below the required gravity. The Minah silver-lead mine in the Wickes district, Jefferson County, Mont., produced substantial quantities of silver-lead ores in the 1890's. The mine has been abandoned since the "silver panic" of the early 1900's. As a part of the Bureau of Mines: program to develop new sources of lead to overcome the growing shortages of that metal, a development project was started at the Minh mine in April 1946 and continued until June 1947, during which 5,600 feet of angledozer trenching and. 1,093 feet of core drilling were completed on the main vein and nearby parallel veins: As a result of this work, interest in the property was stimulated and private operators are now engaged in reopening the mine. This report discusses the past history, geologic setting, and the recent and early operations of the mine.
